Commodore’s Welcome I would like to extend a warm welcome to the broader community to come to the Club and join in all Sandringham Yacht Club (SYC) has to offer. Membership subscription to SYC represents exceptional value and will open up a whole new world of sporting, recreational and social activities and add a further dimension to your life.
“ like-minded people who share a passion for the water, the outdoor life, exercise and good fellowship.” There is an extensive range of benefits that the Club provides: ›› Membership at SYC continues to grow and our current member base of 2700 provides the opportunity to support a wide and diverse range of activities – there truly is “something for everyone”. ›› SYC provides an extensive range of competitive “on-water” events with keelboat racing most days of the week. ›› For those not into competitive sailing our Recreational Boating community (including both yachts and powerboats) organises events ranging from a cruise in company to Bass Strait, to cruises to Docklands, to simple picnics, raft ups and more.

›› Our dinghy fleet is active with training and racing for both junior and senior fleets. ›› We make it easy and affordable for potential new members to try out sailing and our facilities via our Day Pass Membership scheme. ›› Enclosed you will read about our online crew scheme which assists crew looking for boats and boats looking for crew – a great service for those new to the Club. ›› There are a variety of social events throughout the year catering for all ages and interest groups.
›› The Club’s enclosed Discover Sailing pathways illustrates our entire onwater offer and demonstrates we are committed to providing excellence in training and development for all . ›› We believe in supporting our local community – from providing school students with on-water activities, to fund raisers for local charities and conference facilities for local businesses. ›› SYC also is proud to offer extensive food and beverage facilities and members receive discounts, priority bookings and exclusive promotions. ›› SYC is one of four yacht clubs in Australia to be invited to join the prestigious International Council of yacht clubs – this is a grouping of 35 of the top yacht clubs in the world representing some 25 countries. The practical benefit to our members is the reciprocal rights enjoyed when travelling overseas (and indeed, within Australia with our local reciprocal clubs) and access to “Worlds Best Practice” in all we do.
A short introduction such as this cannot do justice to all on offer at SYC. The key benefit is mixing with like-minded people who share a passion for the water, the outdoor life, exercise and good fellowship. We would love to welcome you to ‘Sandy’. Kate Mitchell, Commodore

SATURDAY RACING
WEDNESDAY WONDERS
INTENSITY
INTENSITY
In summer, the Club runs racing on most weekends between October and April. Events include an overall aggregate event, individual trophy races and inter-club racing.
After Saturdays, the largest racing fleets are seen on Wednesday afternoon with a race around fixed marks. The races are started from the Club start tower, which is located directly above the Members’ Bar.
The inter-club racing, sponsored by Club Marine, consists of 8 to 10 races over summer that are combined with other keelboat clubs located at the northern end of Port Phillip Bay.
Wednesday racing uses pursuit starts where start times vary according to a predetermined performance based handicap. The smaller boats start first and the aim is to get all boats finishing close together.
Races are scored on various handicap systems so it doesn’t matter what length or shape your boat is, everyone is on a level playing field.
SUNDAY RACING INTENSITY
THURSDAY TWILIGHTS INTENSITY
Thursday night twilight races are run during daylight savings and are primarily social races where members can take out friends and colleagues for a sail after work. Similar to Wednesday races, pursuit starts are used whereby start times vary according to a predetermined performance handicap. Starting at around 18:00 hrs the races are kept fairly short with a duration of approximately one hour.
Sunday morning races provide a great opportunity to race in a relaxed style, as winds are generally lighter in the morning and there are less boats racing than on Thursday nights or Saturday afternoons. Races are pursuit starts similar to Wednesdays and boats can race with or without spinnakers, while those boats with spinnakers are handicapped accordingly. For the more competitive sailor there is always One Design racing. With all the boats of the same design makes this style of racing extremely tight and exciting.

OFF THE BEACH SAILING Off The Beach (OTB) sailors and families are a very close knit group of people. The juniors that grow up (and their families) in the OTB develop lifelong friendships and it is these friendships that flow through to continue Club membership – it is a very special community. The Lou Abrahams Off The Beach Sailing Centre holds regular racing for its members and caters for a range of different abilities. The racing generally consists of multiple fleets and is run by volunteers. The combination of racing on weekends with junior and youth member coaching programs assist SYC members to achieve their goals.

RACING AND SOCIAL
TRAINING
Activities are conducted throughout the year and include: Sunday race series, Wednesday Twilight series (daylight saving period), external regattas and training programs, an annual pilgrimage to Metung at Easter, Opening Day Sail Past, Presentation Nights, Pie Nights and New Members evenings, camp out weekends at the Club and Christmas Parties.
Participation in sport is an important aspect of any youth’s life. We believe in the value of physical activity in the lives of youths because of its ability to teach physical skill and coordination, discipline, self-esteem, the team concept and healthy lifestyle with an emphasis on safety, fun and participation and most of all community.
Involvement and participation in Off The Beach sailing provides fun and an opportunity for all members of the family to become involved. Roles include: assisting in running the races, manning safety craft, helping in the canteen and assisting with social activities.
OTB programs include coaching for junior and youth classes, starting with the Green Fleet program for beginners.

RECREATIONAL BOATING Recreational boating is all about people enjoying on-water activities with their boats in a less competitive, more social, family environment. SYC Recreational Boating events are open to all kinds of boats, power or yacht, large or small. As well as the on-water activities, we also have some great land based activities throughout the year.

SOCIAL
CRUISE IN COMPANY
Activities organised by the Recreational Boating Committee are for all members and their sailing friends. The aim of these events is to encourage participation in events, to share interesting and educational boating information, as well as giving Club members more opportunities to meet other members and use the facilities of the Club.
Experience the adventure of our Cruise in Company events. Cruises are varied and include four major events scheduled annually with destinations to Geelong, Queenscliff, Docklands and various anchorages through Bass Strait. Relax and enjoy the experience whilst taking in the rich untouched scenic coastlines and the fresh sea air.
Events range from fishing competitions and Christmas parties to winery tours, presentation events or cruising around Port Phillip.

Experiencing Mother Nature’s pure ambiance and spectacular coastal scenery, these cruises are memorable and fantastic opportunities to share with your fellow members combined with the warm hospitality at our destinations.
RALLIES
GUEST SPEAKER NIGHTS
Rallies at SYC are a mix of navigation, log trials, cruising in company and solo exploration of feeling at one with the world. Spiced with social events ashore and rendezvous afloat, rallies at SYC are for everyone.
The Recreational Boating charter is focused on adding value to your membership. While it is recognised that the skipper carries the responsibility for the yacht, similarly each crew needs to ensure that they are adequately prepared and capable for each racing or cruising event.
Whether it’s a leisurely cruise from SYC to destination harbours, scenic cruises with information packs of points of interest and quiz questions or timed scenic routes, our rallies are about friendships made ashore and continued over the radio at sea. Rallies are diverse and include five annual events - it’s about testing your skills against your peers, arriving at the dock knowing you have achieved something fantastic.
Speakers deliver a variety of interesting, motivational and informative topics, from navigation and offshore operations, debriefs of cruises, fishing hints and tips from local fishing specialists, marine radio and emergency procedures, marine diesel engine maintenance, marine weather and forecasting resources, historical events and more.

At Sandringham Yacht Club we enjoy seeing people experience the excitement and endless opportunities that sailing has to offer. We have developed an online crew system that matches people with boats quickly and easily. If you would like the opportunity to sail with one of our members, it’s as simple as registering on our Online Crew Register. Don’t be concerned if you don’t know anyone or believe you haven’t got the right skills or knowledge to go sailing - that’s the great thing about our crew register – we will put you in touch with the boat owner and they will provide you with the opportunity to crew.
If you would like to work on your skills prior to making this leap of faith, then our very own Club Marine SYC Boating Academy has a wide range of courses for people of all ages and abilities – refer to the enclosed sailing pathways and Academy information. We also make it easy and affordable for potential new members to try out sailing through our Day Pass Membership scheme – read all about in the next few pages. Don’t forget – there may come a time in your life when you are not able to go sailing, but now is not that time – so what are you waiting for?

DAY PASS MEMBERSHIP Like all sporting clubs, there are fees associated with regular usage of that facility and enjoying the services it provides. At SYC we make it easy and affordable for potential new members to try out sailing and our facilities without having to immediately subscribe to annual membership. The Club provides a ‘Day Pass Membership’ at a minimal cost. This enables you to sail at the Club and to then use the clubhouse facilities post-race. The ‘Day Pass Membership’ allows you to do this up to 12 times before you need to subscribe to annual membership. What’s even better, any money you spend on the Day Pass Membership will reduce your nomination fee when you do switch over to annual membership. Day Pass Membership at SYC works like this; The first 6 day passes cost $15 per sail The following 6 day passes cost $35 per sail Once you have sailed 12 times, you then need to become an annual member. The $300 you have paid to date then equates to the ‘Crew’ membership nomination fee – so effectively when you upgrade to annual membership, you pay the subscription only and not the nomination fee.
THE BENEFITS OF DAY PASS MEMBERSHIP ›› You comply with SYC Club Policy ›› Yachting Australia Personal Accident Insurance for the day ›› YA number for the day (necessary for all who race) ›› Liquor licence compliance – the Day Pass card is accepted as the ‘sign in’ to the bar ›› Members’ prices in the bar ›› Facility access (showers etc.) It is mandatory that all who sail out of SYC have either a Day Pass Membership or are an annual member. Day Pass Memberships are available from the Boating Office on race day – it’s quick, easy and more affordable than participating in just about any other sport.

MEMBERSHIP FAQ WHY IS MEMBERSHIP IMPORTANT? Membership is the lifeblood of SYC. The Clubs fundamental purpose is to provide activities, facilities, social programs and training in accordance with the needs of members. To remain financially viable in the long run and to deliver these activities, it is essential (and Club policy) that all regular users of the Club subscribe to some form of membership.
HOW DO I BECOME A MEMBER? Simply fill in the membership application form (available online and from the Guest Relations Desk) and send it with the applicable nomination fee to the Club. If you cannot find a proposer or seconder please contact the Club so that we may assist. On receipt of your completed form, you will be invited to attend a new member evening after which your application will be presented to General Committee for approval. Shortly thereafter you will be notified of your acceptance to membership. Membership intakes are normally staged monthly depending on demand. If you would like to discuss your membership options or have any queries with regard to your application, please contact our Membership Officer, Karen Crowley or the CEO, Richard Hewett.
AS A MEMBER WHEN CAN I USE THE CLUBHOUSE? Members have full access to the clubhouse facilities 7 days per week. The opening hours do change from time to time and are published on the website.
WHAT IF I WISH TO TRIAL SYC BEFORE SUBSCRIBING TO MEMBERSHIP? Day Pass Membership is the best way to trial the Club. You can purchase up to 12 Day Passes from the Guest Relations desk or Boating Office Reception. If you enjoy your trial period then we would be delighted to discuss membership options with you. Any money spent on your Day Pass Membership will be offset against any nomination fee (max. $300) when you join. For more details please refer to the Day Pass section of this booklet.
WHAT INSURANCE COVER DO I RECEIVE AS A CLUB MEMBER? Membership of the Club automatically entitles you to be either a Silver or Youth Member with Yachting Australia. These memberships come with Personal Accident Insurance which covers personal accidents while boating or on yacht club premises (refer to Yachting Australia website for full policy details). If you purchase a Day Pass Membership, you will receive Personal Accident Insurance for that day. Please note we do not charge a fee for twilight racing but you have the option to purchase this insurance for $5 for that day.

SYC Membership
ARE THERE ANY IMPLICATIONS IF I USE SYC REGULARY BUT DO NOT JOIN UP?
HOW CAN I FIND OUT WHAT EVENTS ARE HAPPENING?
First and foremost visitors are very welcome to SYC. However, once a visitor becomes a regular visitor they need to become a financial member or otherwise there are serious consequences:
The Club communicates with its members through various media:
›› Firstly, visitors must be signed in by financial members. If a visitor is not signed in, or is signed in by an un-financial member, then this contravenes our liquor licence and exposes the Club and its staff to excessive fines, penalties and, in extreme cases, loss of licence.
›› Weekly eNews – you can opt in on our homepage or simply ask to subscribe ›› Quarterly In & Around – request for it to be emailed or pick up from Guest Relations ›› Notice boards in the Members’ Bar, marina entrance, OTB and upcoming events poster in the foyer
›› If a visitor exceeds six visits per year then they are not complying with the Club’s Constitution and By Laws (there are exceptions for spouses and certain family members).
›› Email alerts – please ensure you have requested correspondence by email
›› If a visitor sails regularly without membership status, then their skipper is in breach of the YA Racing Rules of Sailing. This may lead to the boat being disqualified from the race. Furthermore, if the visitor is not a Yachting Australia member (a benefit of Club membership) then they do not have Yachting Australia Personal Accident Insurance.
›› The visitor will also be enjoying utilising a facility that costs several $ million per annum to operate and the cost impact will be worn inequitably by those who do subscribe to membership.

HOW CAN I BECOME MORE INVOLVED? There are many ways for a member to become more involved with the Club ranging from race management to organising the Annual Ball. Additionally, the Club frequently requires specialist advice. If you would like to learn more, please contact our Membership Officer, Karen Crowley or the CEO, Richard Hewett who would be happy to help.
ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? Please contact our friendly Guest Relations staff who will either provide you with an answer or direct you to someone else who can!
