Commodore’s Report 2015 was a great year at Sandringham Yacht Club, and many of our members have achieved so much. The crews of Pacemaker, Samaran and Azzura taking out Australian Championships and Intrusion is a State Champion. We have Intrusion as a State Champion. Sandringham members representing Australia on the world stage include Eliza Solly, Krystal Weir, Oli Twedell, Jeremy O’Connell, Tess Lloyd, Jack Challands and Lachlan Hughes. We also have many members who have accepted leadership roles in the yachting world. SYC can be proud of the achievements of these members. Clubs have to steer a narrow course between the need for change and respecting and learning from the past. We are fortunate at SYC that our corporate memory and respect of history is kept alive, particularly by our Life Members, Past Commodores and long term members. So often, when General Committee is discussing change, we call on the expertise of these elder statesmen of the Club for advice. Their continued commitment to the Club is much appreciated and their advice is invariably sound. Change though, is necessary. There have been many changes around your Club over the last few years. Some have been superficial changes such as the Port Phillip Room make-over, the updating of our website and structural changes in the yard. There have also been cultural changes and a gradual rejuvenation around some of our activities. One of the cultural changes I applaud has been the gradual change to SYC being a Club of members. Members’ guests are welcome but we are a Club for members. Our day pass system means all users of SYC contribute to the running of the Club and this is an easy entry point into membership. The rejuvenation of our Club has to include, even centre around, our younger members. Women in Sailing Challenge (WISC) is an example of this. WISC has been a well-run activity for over 15 years but a generational change gave the competition an extra sparkle this year when a group of exceptional young women took the helm. One of the best things about SYC is the strong sense of community and family. Like all families there may be some tensions and disappointments at times, but also like families we rally together when there is need. Our family spirit was evident when Luke Matthews had a dreadful biking accident in 2015 and so many from SYC kicked in to support the Matthews family. Our family spirit is evident every time we walk into the Bar, attend a function or watch junior sailing. So many of our young staff have been junior sailors at the Club. After heading to university they often return to work part-time in our Club. They are the waiters at our functions, they are part of our coaching team and they are working behind the Bar. The Reinehr family is a great example. Luke is a star sailor, brother Michael has such a complete knowledge of our Club that he can work in most areas, Mark is one of our duty managers and Elle is part of our Bar staff. It would be hard to be in the Club and not have a Reinehr helping somewhere. It is too easy for a Club to focus on facilities. At SYC the most important things must be our activities and our members’ participation. At our recent Strategic Planning session much of our focus was on our future activities. Our core activity will always be boating, but as a committee we need to steer away from doing things because we have always done it that way. Rather, we need to look for activities that will most engage our members. We cannot avoid change just in case we make a mistake. To paraphrase Roosevelt – it is better to have tried and failed than to have never tried at all. The best way to judge how well our Club is going is to look at how well our members are engaged with their Club and our level of activity. It is great when I go to the Bar and it is full and vibrant. It is fantastic when I go to the marina and there are lots members using their boats. I love it when I try to book into an activity and have to be squeezed in. These are the indications that Sandringham Yacht Club is doing well. Enjoy your Club.

Sail Report Hello all sailors With the busy December/January period now behind, I will take this opportunity to congratulate all Sandringham Yacht Club yachts on their fantastic efforts and results in the Cock of the Bay, Tasmania races and Geelong Festival of Sails. The large turnout of SYC sailors to our Commodore’s Drinks on 30 January 2016 to celebrate the achievements of their fellow members is testament to why it is so great to be part of a Club such as SYC. I would also like to thank Commodore Kate Mitchell, Vice Commodore Rob Davis and our boating department team for their effort which made this a great event. Racing over the Christmas period was very successful for the Club.

Our new WISC subcommittee run by Megan Aulich and her team did a fantastic job to attract 18 entrants and re-energise the regatta which had been declining over the last few years. The day was a huge success with four very competitive races completed and a lot of fun had by all. Congratulations to all participants.

Cruising 1st Salt Whistle 2nd Carpe Diem 3rd The Secretary Fleet numbers remain very solid throughout the sailing calendar. The Mercedes-Benz Brighton Saturday Summer Series (55 participants), Wednesday Wonders (49 participants), Thursday Twilights (70 participants) and our Sunday Sailors (29 participants) remain popular and offer our members the best and most diversified sailing on Port Phillip. With only a few races to go in each of the series, the battle is well and truly on to decide which yachts take the coveted Summer Series silverware. For all results go to syc.com.au/on-water/ keelboat-racing/results/ It was great to see SYC yachts Simply Fun, Wicked and Bandit flying the SYC burgee at the recent Port Lincoln Race week. All yachts finished well in the series and had a great deal of fun in doing so. Also we have seen Rob Pitts and his SYC team on Double Black compete in the Farr 40 World Championships in Sydney finishing second in the one design division and Melges 32 PP1 (Damien Thomas and his young SYC team) competing currently in the Super 11 series on Sydney Harbour. Well Done. On 26 February 2016 the Mercedes-Benz Brighton Port Phillip Challenge was held and the event attracted some 20 boats and 220 participants. A great day on the water was had by all with many people introduced to sailing. The day was a huge success with the weather gods looking after us. Many thanks go to all the skippers who made their yachts available for this great event. Congratulations go to the winner on the day, Terra Firma. With the increase in participants in our Thursday Twilight event we have had an increase in incidents and near misses. I must remind all skippers to show a reasonable degree of care and tolerance for their fellow sailors as there are many differing designs racing together, some light and manoeuvrable and some not so. I encourage all skippers to have a good understanding of the Racing Rules of Sailing (Blue Book) as a number of near misses are a result of a lack of understanding of the fundamental racing rules. At SYC we have access to some world class jury personnel who are always willing to donate their time to discuss rules and rule interpretation with fellow SYC members. It has been pleasing to receive race feedback via the SYC website. All racing feedback received is presented at our Sail Committee meetings for discussion and review and this assists us in providing the best sailing format possible and provides valuable feedback to our boating department. Yours in sailing

Recreational Boating Report It has been so long since my last report in this publication on all the Recreational Boating activities within our Club that I hardly know where to begin.
W
here I last left off is probably a good place and that means the raft up picnic 2015 when it was thought that the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron wave attenuation pontoon would be a good destination. It was and so much so that we revisited RMYS again this January. We did not have the wandering minstrels this year but the 30 boats that took part enjoyed a wonderful sunny afternoon mingling and satisfying their hunger and unending thirsts. Following on from 2015 there has been a concerted effort to win back the SYC Cup Navigation Rally and I have to tell you we came very close but no cigar. David McCutcheon once again did us proud with a second place, but congratulations must once again go to Cameron Simpson and RVMYC for retaining the trophy for now. The 2015 off shore cruise-in-company was to Westernport. 10 boats headed for Flinders for the first night, then on to Hanns Inlet where we were welcomed by the personnel at HMAS Cerberus and invited to dinner in the Ward Room. The trip also involved a stay at Yaringa Harbour and Queenscliff Cruising Yacht Club. This year we are heading further afield to the Gippsland Lakes to join the celebrations for the 55th anniversary of the Metung Easter Regatta. Our 2015 Dockland cruise included a wonderful dinner cruise up the Yarra (watch your head on those bridges). As Sandringham Yacht Club was the first club to fully book out the 28 berths at Melbourne City Marina we took full advantage of the exclusive use of their new lounge facilities.
2016 Summer Raft-up RMYS
We will be doing the same again on 1 and 2 April 2016, with a BBQ dinner and some fine entertainment on the Saturday night. It is indicative of the broad experience of our Club membership when the majority of guest speakers throughout the year have been members. We have had Peter Lees ‘Exploring the Islands of Eastern Bass Strait’, Phil Spry-Bailey, who gave a wonderful presentation on the USS Sea Lion II, Peter Dransfield who spoke of his exploits as a world travelling sailor as well as his rich life in academia and Richard Buxton delivered a wonderful presentation on his adventures following in the footsteps of Shackleton. We certainly do have a diverse membership. Then last October Anthony ‘Moose’ Cook and two equally knowledgeable mates told a room full of hopefuls
how to find, hook and land those big snapper in readiness for the Annual Fishing Competition in the following weeks. The coveted Wayne Read Trophy was won on that day by eight year old Levi Dowell who bagged a very nice 4.65 kg snapper. Congratulations Levi.

At the ever popular Presentation Breakfast in July the Recreational Boating Person of the Year was awarded to the indomitable Tommy Raft, well deserved recognition for the generosity and enthusiasm he brings to our Club. Bloody Marys and gluhwein accompanying the delicious breakfast prepared by Kol and his team were enjoyed by all. Keith and his trusty old bus took 40 wine connoisseurs on the annual winery tour in August. The early starters were in good cheer as they rattled off to the Mornington Peninsula for a lunch and tasting at T’Gallant and then on to the Morning Star Estate winery for some more light refreshments. The 2015 Melbourne Cup long weekend saw 25 boats head to Geelong on the Saturday where a fully catered sit down meal for 70 was enjoyed by all participants including our Commodore, Kate Mitchell. On our way out of Geelong on Sunday morning Bill Stubbs was heard on the radio to remark “now there is something you don’t see every day” as a Collins Class Submarine headed towards the fleet in the Point Richards Channel. What an impressive sight. The long weekend was

capped off by an early return on Tuesday in time to join in the Cup festivities back at the Club. The annual Recreational Boating Christmas BBQ was once again held in the undercroft on a balmy Wednesday evening in December 2015. The 200 members attending enjoyed a relaxed and easy-going night which was topped off by the raffle and the usual fantastic array of prizes on offer. The atmosphere and Christmas cheer were greatly enhanced by the live tunes provided by crew members and friends of Magic and The Secretary.
2015 Recreational Boating Christmas Party
We have a host of events lined up for the coming 12 months so please make sure you check out the calendar, noticeboard, e-news and the Recreational Boating section of the website for entry forms and keep the dates free. Finally I would like to thank the Recreational Boating Committee and partners who volunteer their time and effort to make our program so successful and all the members who turn up and support our events.

Off The Beach Report
O
ff The Beach sailing continues to flourish at Sandringham Yacht Club with a diverse offering of on and off water events and there have been a number of new initiatives that complement existing programs. The 2015-16 season has been highly successful with strong participation in coaching programs and over 40 boats taking to the water most Sunday afternoons to provide a wonderful spectacle for those lunching or socialising in the Clubhouse or on the deck. The season commenced with a Pie Night in late September 2015. This provided a great opportunity to reunite with friends not seen over the winter months and to welcome new members and their families. Our guest speakers were Julian Sasson and Mischa Suda, who shared with us their experiences in representing SYC and Australia at the 2015 International Cadet World Championships on Lake Garda, Italy. Julian and Mischa showed us some wonderful images of this remarkable venue and shared what they learnt during the regatta. We also took the opportunity to congratulate them on achieving an outstanding eighth place at this event. Opening Day in September 2015 dawned sunny and windy but this did not deter the OTB sailors from decorating their boats in the hope of a Sail Past. The speech presented by 2015-16 OTB Junior Captain, Lachlan Coman, captured the essence of the wonderful community we have at SYC and so I have taken the liberty of including this speech below. Good morning Commodore, Flag Officers and Club Captains, special guests and members of the Sandringham Yacht Club community. It’s my pleasure to speak to you today as the 2015-16 Off The Beach Junior Club Captain and it’s an honour to represent all the junior Off The
Beach sailors who are here today and eagerly looking forward to the new season. Over the past eight years I have been a part of the Off The Beach community, beginning in C Fleet when I was seven sailing Optis, before moving into an International Cadet. Sailing with a previous OTB captain, Dylan Rohan, when I first began in Cadets, taught me a lot about the Off The Beach community which I have come to love today. It is full of people who are committed to making training, racing and Off The Beach life really enjoyable, with parent and other volunteers who help to make it all possible. Of course we have fellow sailors who are not only excellent sailors but great mates. At Sandringham we are fortunate to have many classes of Off The Beach boats actively participating in Club racing and training – from Optis to skiffs. And to all the members who aren’t a part of the Off The Beach life just yet, I hope you’ll pay us a visit sometime during the season. The vibe is really enjoyable and I’m sure you’ll love it. I have no doubt there is a class for all adult and kid sailors and sailors to be. Come and enjoy the traditions of the Off The Beach, from Christmas parties to campouts, to the tradition of throwing sailors off the pier on their birthdays. So today I encourage all Off The Beach sailors to go out into the season with an ambition to do their best, to sail fairly and to continue the great tradition of sportsmanship at Sandy Yacht Club. With all that I welcome you to a new season, which I’m sure will be as enjoyable as the last. Unfortunately the Ronstan Opening Day Challenge did not go ahead due to the blustery conditions, but we are always grateful for the wonderful support provided to OTB by Alistair Murray and Ronstan for this and many of our other events. The OTB sailing season began with a new initiative developed by the OTB committee, providing sailors and volunteers with a pre-season briefing session. On water volunteers had a refresher in general race management and safety procedures, while our sailors were introduced to the revised Sailing Instructions and an overview of the racing rules. Our signature event for the season, Sail Sandy, once again showcased the wonderful resources, facilities and race management we are so privileged to have here at SYC. A fleet of 213 boats hit the water on Saturday 17 October 2015 for a weekend of highly competitive sailing in a range of conditions that tested all sailors. Over ninety SYC members volunteered to assist in the running of this event, which truly brings together all facets of the Club. Special thanks to all volunteers and the Sail Sandy organising committee, chaired by

SYC 2015 Club Member of the Year, Dean Robson. This group works for over eight months in the lead up to Sail Sandy in order to make it the iconic event it has become. Just a month after the highly successful Sail Sandy we hosted the Kingston Sprints Series on 21 and 22 November. The Series is sponsored each year by Ian Mann and Kingston Trophies. This two-day event is short-course racing with a target time of around 20 minutes, enabling sailors with the opportunity to hone their starting technique in the lead up to the many national championships held over the Christmas and New Year period. 46 competitors fought it out over nine races, with Paul and Bronwyn Ridgway in their Tasar Ridgididge taking out the overall result and the Kingston Trophy.
Saturday 19 December 2015 saw two terrific events for OTB sailors to wrap up our preChristmas program. The Christmas Sprints Racing and Coaching program, held during the day, was another new initiative for 2015 that focused on developing starting and mark-rounding techniques. The OTB Christmas party was again a huge success, with a huge turnout and lots of fun for all. A highlight was the trivia quiz organised by Junior Club Captain, Lachlan Coman. December and January saw many of our sailors load boats, RHIBs, families and sailing bags to travel interstate for National Championships. Congratulations to all of our SYC sailors who competed and represented us with such sportsmanship and commitment. Special mention must go to the following sailors on their achievements:
49er FX National Championships 1st Eliza Solly 2nd Tess Lloyd
420 Australian Youth Championship 1st
Nicholas Sharman and James Grogan
420 National Championships 1st
Nicholas Sharman and James Grogan
International Cadet National Championships 1st Julian Sasson and Mischa Suda 1st on Handicap: Jeremy Shepard and Hannah Perryman. We also had a number of our younger sailors represent SYC at the Australian and Open International Optimist Dinghy Championships held at the George River 16 ft Sailing Club (NSW)
from 2 to 9 January 2016. The conditions were very trying and wet. Congratulations to Anna Cripsey who has been offered a place in the Australian Optimist Development Squad based on her performance in this regatta. Congratulations also to Clay Williams who received the Measurers Award.
looked forward to the opportunity to also have racing on this day hosted by our neighbours. Unfortunately the weather was not on our side, but there was certainly a great sense of community and camaraderie as we joined Hampton for their pre-race briefing, with lots of enthusiasm on both sides of the ‘fence’ to continue bringing our fleets together at least a couple of times each season.
The 8th World O’pen Bic Cup was held at Safety Beach from 27 December to 3 January with eight competitors from SYC competing in this event. Congratulations to the following sailors:
The OTB Live-In weekend is always a highlight of the social program for young and old alike and perfect weather conditions saw lots of fun activities, with the Stand Up Paddle Boards a particular hit. Junior Club Captain, Lachlan Coman and his family turned the OTB area into an underwater wonderland in keeping with the Under The Sea theme. A Junior Members’ Forum provided an opportunity for our young members to provide feedback and suggestions for future OTB programs.
Under 16 Division 3rd Jack Challands
Teams Event 1st Lachlan Hughes 3rd Jack Challands and Michael Parks. The second part of the OTB season began once again with a Pie Night held on Friday 29 January. We were privileged to welcome two very special guest speakers, Ella and Millie Disney, who spoke to a record crowd. The girls shared some wonderful photographs, stories and adventures from the epic sailing adventure they have shared with their parents Nick and Andrea on their 44 foot yacht Muneera over the past six years – certainly an inspiration to us all. Another new initiative for the 2015-16 season has seen OTB working more closely with Hampton Sailing Club to provide opportunities for our fleets to come together on specified dates in the sailing calendar. On Sunday 8 November 2015 SYC hosted racing for the two clubs with a large fleet in each division hitting the water. A number of our sailors joined in Hampton Sailing Club’s racing during January. Sunday 31 January was scheduled to be our first day of racing for the year and we
Our greatest area of growth this season is in the Optimist fleet, with over 30 Optimist sailors participating in the Junior Development Squad. It has been a delight to welcome so many new sailors and their families into our OTB community. A record 24 Optimists from SYC competed in the 2016 Lidgett Cup which is held annually at Davey’s Bay Yacht Club. We are currently preparing to host the 2016 Optimist State Championships at SYC over the Labour Day weekend in March and are very fortunate to have such a strong fleet and group of willing and enthusiastic parent supporters who will ensure this event is a great success both on and off the water. With the 55th Metung Easter Regatta, Winter Series and Presentation Night still to come, OTB will continue to be a hive of activity over the coming months. As the season draws to a close I will be passing on the Club Captain’s hat (yes, there is actually a hat) to a new Club Captain. It has been such a privilege to work with and lead the OTB community. I am particularly grateful to the members of the OTB committee and Junior Club Captains, Julian Sasson and Ashley Cavanagh (2014-15) and Lachlan Coman (2015-16), for their support and commitment to ensuring that OTB sailing at SYC continues to be the best it can be.

Wednesday Wonders Report Wednesday Wonders Summer 2015-16 Series The summer series completed 22 of the scheduled 25 races. The winners were: 1st Johnny B. Goode - John Chipp (Beneteau Oceanis 34), 2nd Cassandra of Melbourne - Bob Reeves (Mottle 33) and 3rd Foggy Dew - Joe O’Grady (Bavaria 32).
FACT CHECK for summer 2015-16:
Pippa and Bacardi
Wednesday Wonders provides an opportunity for all yachts entered to win a race whether they are old or new, 24 feet or 15.5 metres, cruising yachts, Sydney to Hobart yachts or sleek racing yachts. The smallest yachts Willarie and Pippa, both Triton 24s, start approximately 51 minutes before the last yacht Esprit, a Beneteau 47.7. In between, up to 56 other yachts that are registered for Wednesday Wonders races may have started. There are up to 26 Wednesday Wonders races every summer and winter. The handicapper must be diligent in his decisions. His success can be gauged by the number of times that, after two hours-plus of racing, a dozen or more different types of yachts cross the finish line within 10 minutes after the winner. This is now a frequent occurrence.

One of the most difficult Wednesday Wonders awards to win is the Misty Blue Trophy. The trophy is the tip of Misty Blue’s tiller sailed by Bruce Coram, and is presented to the yacht with the season’s best average starting time closest to their handicap time. Our sponsor, Michael Blair of Blair Shipwrights donates a free hull scrub to the Start of the Day winner for every race in the season. For the last two presentation nights, in addition to his weekly prizes, Blair Shipwrights has also donated a $1,000 voucher to a lucky skipper, towards work on their yacht. The recent Misty Blue Trophy winners are: 2014 Winter - Primo, Steve Copley with an average of 5 seconds, 2014-15 Summer - INSX, Rob Sill with an average of 3.67 seconds, 2015 Winter - INSX, Rob Sill. Two seasons in a row proves that Rob has a very accurate stop watch on board and 2015-16 Summer (a tie for the first time) – INSX, Rob Sill and Lebrok, Theo Korbel with an average time of 2.2727 seconds.
• Start of the day - multiple winners: INSX - 5, Johnny B. Goode - 3, Esprit - 2 • Yachts with more than four top ten finish positions: 10 times – Johnny B. Goode 9 times – Cassandra of Melbourne
The winter series completed 23 of the scheduled 26 races and had 34 different yachts gaining podium finishes. The winners were:

Special events The camaraderie amongst the 250 Wednesday Wonders sailors is further fostered with a few fun elements injected into some races, eg. the Classic Car Owners trophy and the Mark Windward designed race called The Pairs The Secretary Race. The Classic Car Yacht Race has a grand prix type start for keelboats. The race is conducted as a normal WW race with some variations. The race start time commences with a crew runner from the Ken King Centre. Red Bluff Homes generously funds the prize for the winner and for other awards such as the best dressed driver and the oldest car on display at the Club. The normal finishing places of the race are adjusted with allowances, eg. for bringing their classic car to the Club on the day, the oldest car, the best dressed driver. This year’s winner was The Secretary
David Judkins and his Fiat
(George Shaw - Austin Healey 1956), second was Esprit (Garry Anderson - Ferrari 1965). Third placed was Lebrok (Theo Korbel), whose score was helped by David Judkins bringing along his 1923 Fiat. David won the Oldest Car Award. Included in the prizes was a hand-held VHF radio donated by Offshore Marine. Christine Matheou was awarded the Emma Peel Award for the best dressed driver.
The Pairs Race or Choose your own Handicap Race It is one race where no-one can complain to the handicapper. It was an in-between season race to provide a chance to let skippers have some say in their handicaps. Yachts were randomly paired roughly matched, ie. lower with higher handicaps. The paired yachts could then adjust their total combined handicap. A fleet of 30 yachts joined in the race. The winners were Pizazz and Second Nature. Second were Pippa and Lebrok and third were Alibi and Vantage. Thanks to our Race Management team, some extra prizes were presented. We have a dedicated groupie in the Club. Every
Wednesday Joy Dundas arrives by taxi to watch the race. She knows all the yachts and checks them off on the handicap sheet as they pass. Joy also attends our presentation nights. Other enthusiasts (or are they the pappa-art-sea?) appear frequently in a large craft called Renaissance that seems to have lost its sails and closely observe the action on the course, often parking near one of the last buoys. A big thank you goes to Rowan Simpson, alias Wind Sniffer, for undertaking the task of handicapper. In the past this has usually been a two person task but Rowan has taken it on single-handed, with consultation from others. Handicapping is a difficult but critical part of pursuit keelboat racing. Every yacht in a race should have an equal chance of winning. Finding a handicap which allows that to happen is complex with a range of factors affecting a yacht’s performance - the type of yacht, wind strength, crew on board on the day, how clean their bottom is… etc. Some yachts have a large variation in their performance, finishing 15 places either side of their average position making it even more difficult to adjust their handicap. The weekly races are reviewed and reported on the SYC website by Windward Buoy, alias Graham Furness (analyst extraordinaire) and Mark Windward, alias Jeffrey Woolhouse, who closely monitor the performance of the yachts. They also offer a great deal of advice to the skippers with a bit of humour, which may sometimes even be helpful. The work of their editors, ie. wives, is also appreciated.

great deal of secrecy and hard work. WW sailors are never quite sure what has been dreamt up for the décor and prizes. Every presentation night is booked out in advance and greatly enjoyed by around 220-odd people (and some normal people). The 2015-16 Summer Series Presentation Night saw a record of 268 members and guests in attendance. Wednesday Wonders can claim many unique features and trophies. A list of some of the other awards are: Shebessa Shield - donated by J. Tower Choice Award 2014-15 – Brendan Kruger, Wavelength 2015-16 – Les Browne, Windspeed. Jaffa Trophy – donated by the family of Patrick Johnston-Bell and named after his yacht. The race is held on the closest day to St Patrick’s Day and in 2016 was won by My Way, Magdy Iskander.

The reports are enhanced by a number of WW’s own pappa-art-sea who contribute weekly to a photographic record of the races. Winter 2015 Presentation Night saw Andrew Lynch presented with the Pappa-art-sea Award in recognition for his fantastic action photos on the water.

Sunday Sailors Report

S
unday Sailors shares the distinction of being one of a series of pursuit keel boat races held in the morning. The yard and marina are usually a hive of activity on sail days not only with Sunday Sailors, but also with sailors from Off The Beach yachts and One Design yachts preparing for their morning sail. A stroll to the Ken King Centre about 08:00 will find sailors enjoying a pre-sail coffee and maybe a freshly made egg and bacon roll. On the odd occasion when conditions are still a bit fresh, a warm drink can be most welcome.
The 2014-15 Summers Series was still underway when the last Sunday Sailors report was written for the 2015 issue of Off The Wind. That series did not finish until 12 April 2015. Plenty of participants were able to enjoy the series with 31 yachts contesting the aggregate and an average of 18 yachts competing in each race. It consisted of 14 scheduled races, which were all completed, although six had to be shortened. Often in the mornings the breeze is gentler before building as the day progresses. Six different courses were sailed throughout the series with four having southerly starts and two northerly starts. Course 16 was the most frequently selected course being sailed on four occasions. None of the yachts completed all 14 races, but 11 did complete 11 or more races which contributed to their aggregate scores.

which completed 13 races. She led the aggregate from race four and was still there at the end of the series. Not that it was a runaway win because only four points separated her from the runner up, the Beneteau 367 Lebrok (Theo Korbel) which also completed 13 races. 3 May 2015 saw the start of the 11-race winter series. There are signs that Sunday Sailors can be habit-forming with 18 of the summer series fleet returning for the 2015 winter series. In addition, 11 yachts that had not sailed during the summer also entered the winter series making a total of 29 yachts contesting the aggregate. The variety of yachts competing was a feature of this series. As well as the David and Goliath contest between the 23 foot Sonata 7 Cadenza (Kenneth Foxworthy) and the 65 foot Independent Endeavour (Malcolm Mohr), there was the timeless appeal of the ketch Trim (Phil Atkins) contrasting with the sleek crisp lines of Scarlet Runner (Robert Panache IV Date). There was the light-weight sports yacht Phoenix (Alex Tseberg) competing against the cruising-in-comfort Salar 40 Panache IV (Egils E Stokans). In addition the Cavalier 37 Myuna III (Geoffrey Nixon) was getting in some early preparation for the 2015 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. The winter series went from May until 20 September 2015 with only one race abandoned and five shortened courses. An average of 20 yachts took place in each of the races but this average was dragged down when only seven
Myuna III
yachts contested race six. Maybe the rain, cool temperature and breeze proved a disincentive on that occasion. Nevertheless, the course length for the winter series averaged 7.36 nautical miles compared with the 7.7 for the previous summer. Only the Wright 10 Copyright (Stuart Morrison Jack) completed all the 10 races but nine yachts did complete eight or more races which all contributed to their aggregate scores. Trim
The breeze throughout the winter series proved to be stronger than that experienced in the previous summer. This helped yachts sail faster with the average speed of the fleet increasing from 3.57 to 3.97 knots. There were six different courses sailed in this 10-race series with only one having a southerly start. Course seven was the most frequently sailed course, being selected for four races. The breeze for this winter series blew predominantly from the north-west which was quite different to the previous summer series when it blew predominantly from the south-southeast.
Scarlet Runner
The winter series delivered eight different winners from the 10 races.

The 35 foot X Yacht Xpresso (Damian and Ari Abrahams) recorded two wins, in races one and four, as did Debonnaire which won races eight and 11. The 30 available podium finishes were shared between 18 different yachts. The Bavaria 32 Foggy Dew (Joe O’Grady and Frank Hilliard) and Xpresso topped that list with three podium finishes each. By the end of the winter series it was Debonnaire that found herself at the top of the aggregate for the second successive series. She had completed nine races and recorded a top ten place in all but one. As a result she had a very convincing win, finishing on 37 points, 12 points ahead of her nearest rival the Jeanneau 40 Winsome (Simon Hemingway). Winsome also completed nine races but had seven finishes in the top 10. She did not win a race but recorded two second places in races two and eight.

Once again 29 yachts entered the 2015-16 summer aggregate, including 23 yachts that had sailed in the previous series. The first of the 13 races commenced on 11 October 2015 with only a light breeze but very pleasant conditions. A fleet of 19 yachts contested that race around a shortened course and it produced a very rare sight – one yacht flying not one but two spinnakers. This resulted in a 9th place for Independent Endeavour.
more scheduled races to go before the series ends on 3 April 2016. The contest to finish at the top of the aggregate is becoming a close fought affair with the leader changing after almost every race. There have been six different winners of the eight races but with three wins from eight races Cassandra of Melbourne (Bob Reeves) is going to be hard to beat. She is on top of the aggregate after race 10.
The weather for the first race proved something of an omen for what was to follow. Three of the next four races were shortened, with strong breezes causing races six and seven to be abandoned. Nevertheless there has been an average of about 22 yachts in each race but the average rhumb line length of around 6.8 nautical miles reflects the high proportion of shortened courses. At the time of writing there are three
By the time this short article becomes available the 2016 winter series will already be underway. It is during the winter months that the benefits of hot coffee and an egg and a bacon roll are really appreciated. After using up plenty of energy on the water, the Sunday race ends in time to enjoy a meal in the Members’ Bar. Roast of the day is a good way to face what remains of the weekend.

n Friday 26 February 2016 SYC hosted the Mercedes-Benz Brighton Port Phillip Challenge (PPC). Previously known as ‘Corporate Day’, the PPC was held in ideal conditions on Port Phillip with 200 participants and crew in a fleet of 21 of SYC finest keelboats. The sailing waters of Port Phillip again demonstrated why they are widely recognised to be some of the best and fairest in the world with reliable and consistent winds ensuring the fleet had a nice sail round the fixed mark course in a pursuit format. This event was run for many years in the late 1990s and early 2000s and it was wonderful to see it back on the Club Calendar. All guests enjoyed a memorable ‘Sandy experience’ which included the sailing, a festive lunch with entertainment and awards with some excellent merchandise from Gant.
Our thanks to all of the generous members who donated their yachts for the day and also to all the crew who ensured we had a fun and safe day out on the water. Our thanks also to the Race Management team of Rowan Simpson, Peter Taylor, Eryl Harris, Christine Walsh and Christine Matheou and to our very humorous and entertaining MC Leon Wiegard.

Race Management Report
General Committee recognised the void and formed a Race Management and Rules subcommittee comprising a balance of members from Keelboat and Off The Beach. As Club Captain of Sail, Jason Close is currently Chairperson with Bruce Humphries, Steve Aulich, Graeme Watt, Craig Wiley, Rowan Simpson, Glenn Taylor and Rob Ware as committee members. The aim of the Race Management and Rules Committee is to ensure SYC has a pool of well-trained race management personnel available to deliver the Club racing calendar. In addition, the Committee will make recommendations to General Committee in respect of training, continual upskilling and suitably equipping the Race Management team to ensure SYC offers high-quality sailing. Finally and mostly importantly it is to ensure SYC members, committees and volunteers have a sound understanding of relevant sailing rules and interpretation of those rules.
Training is important to our Race Management team and we run training sessions to keep our volunteers informed and relevant which include power boat handling and first aid courses, all free of charge for our volunteers. The training programs cover on-water policies and procedures, inductions on SYC committee boats and RHIBs, usage of a GPS, laser rangefinder for mark laying, weather instruments, racing rules, start and finish procedures, controlling the course and using tables to determine reference points. We include on-water practice courses in groups which gives a good knowledge of how things need to be done under real racing conditions. Over the last year, once again our great volunteer Race Management team has delivered top class race management, not only to the Club sailing program but also many major events such as ISAF World Cup Sail Melbourne, the Centenary Regatta and many state and national championships in different classes. With the appointment of James Sly as Sailing Coordinator in the Boating Office, the Race Management team will be able to achieve its goal
of conducting more water finishes particularly when it is necessary to shorten courses due to lack of wind. Two more recent announcements were the appointment of Rob Ware as Chairman of the Yachting Victoria Race Official Committee and Ray Shaw as Chairman of the YV Risk Management and Safety Committee. As a Club, we are very fortunate to have such a dedicated team of volunteers who give up a considerable amount of their personal time to both Off The Beach and Keelboat. Without them our racing program would not exist, so on behalf of all our competitors, I would like to personally thank them for their tireless contribution.

J24 Report
O
ne swallow does not a summer make, unless the Nationals for your very own class were held at your very own Club.
The MONJON J24 National Championships held from 5 to 8 January 2016 saw every kind of weather imaginable from perfect conditions to glass-out, from glass-out to 27 knots gusting 30 knots with two to three metre swells. One race even had to be abandoned, but luckily that was the invitation race. The fleet was 19 boats strong and whilst that was not the largest number of J24s we have seen at a regatta at Sandringham Yacht Club, there was not a single dough-boy crew out there.
Suda. Pacemaker. There are two names you will have heard before. Dave Suda and Herschel Landes, co-owners of the all dominant Pacemaker and crew, took out the Australian title for the third time in five years. This is an incredible achievement in our class given the level of competition and the track record of the competitors. The final day saw what turned out to be the most exciting bid for places. Convict’s Revenge (NSW
– Steve Girdis) came up to 2nd place and Jet (SYC – Simon Grain) dropped from 2nd to 3rd. Jet was in a position to take the title on the last day but their now infamous ‘worst race’ had not happened, then it did and out came the handkerchiefs. Broken hearts all around on that boat. By the Lee (SYC – Brendan Lee) took out 4th and Bruschetta IV (SYC – Hugo Ottoway) came home in 5th position. Hyperactive (Mary McCauley and Robyn Coombs) came home 6th after yet another of their mercurial performances. Like watching a drunk man juggle... he can do it for a while but you just know he is going to drop the balls. All of them. As ever, the spirit of the regatta was all we have ever come to know and love about racing J24s. There was a brilliant sausage sizzle on the first day and that really had the sailors from three states mingling and reconnecting. Mid-week there was an Assa J-themed party during which our illustrious Vice President, John Neville was pummelled as the butt of the joke for days and days afterwards. He took it and some would say still is taking it now, as the men amongst men that he is. Presentation night was quite simply one of those nights.
Trophies and medals were presented by our much-loved Commodore, Kate Mitchell. The band was just brilliant, a seven-piece affair organised by Robyn Coombs and the atmosphere was fantastic, as was the raffle. All I will say is that John Neville should be doing stand-up for a living. We are of course indebted to our sponsor MONJON (Australia) Limited. The owner and Club member, John Moncrieff, once again reached into his pockets and supported our nationals and has again delivered another $5,000 toward our state titles in April 2016. This brings his total sponsorship to J24 Victoria to $24,000. His generosity has been vital to the successes of our regattas and again our gratitude cannot be underlined enough. Also, we must thank our SYC volunteers and SYC boating office team. Literally nothing would happen without them. Graeme Watt and his Race Management team give of their time... of which there is no greater gift. Thank you.

Thank you to the Race Officer, Steve Aulich, my dad. Many nights (and days) were spent going back and forth prepping the Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions for the event. You and your team did a fantastic job on the water and we are forever grateful to the volunteers who enable us to run these events and participate in this amazing sport. Thank you to the new WISC subcommittee which was formed in mid-2015. With little to no experience in organising regattas I think we managed to pull one out of the hat. Thank you to Sasha Phillips for your sponsorship and support at every hour, to Steph Strong for calling and emailing everyone, to Freya Vickery for providing a link between our committee and the numerous other SYC committees she sits on, to Claire Sundin for your motivation and enthusiasm and to Deb Parker for keeping us on track. We are looking forward to a bigger and better regatta next year. ps. We are hosting a second women’s event at SYC this year to be held on the Club’s Beneteau 7.5s in May. Commodore Kate Mitchell has invited the Commodores of five other clubs around the bay to put forward their best all-female team. Keep an eye out for what is sure to be a tightly-contested event.

he Women in Sailing Challenge (WISC) was held at Sandringham Yacht Club on a beautiful summer day in early February 2016. We had a fabulous turn out with 18 boats and over 100 female sailors.
Young Members Report Throughout the year the Young Members have enjoyed some great times together both socially and on the water. As per usual the Young Members of Sandringham Yacht Club were out in full force at last year’s AFL-themed Opening Day.
We gave new purpose to the term ‘tone deaf’ at our annual Karaoke night. The members also enjoyed a relaxed Christmas drink on the deck and have continued to enjoy the Club’s casual Thursday night sails. We were also pleased at the success of our Young Members Corporate Day, where we invited people to have a try on the Club Beneteaus. Our Young Members at SYC have achieved some outstanding results in their respective classes this year. We would like to say a massive congratulations to all of our Young Members who have done a brilliant job of representing our Club in various regattas throughout the year, whether that be Club racing, interclub racing, state championships, national championships or ocean racing. It was also great to see so many of our Young Members out on the water at the 2016 Festival of Sails, held in Geelong. We finished off the summer with a raft-up day and we took to the water with our best floaties to enjoy the sunshine. You may have spotted us behind the wave screen relaxing on our toucans and flamingos. After several ferry rides back to shore we finished the day at the OTB where we were joined by more Young Members for a BBQ. It has been fantastic to meet and welcome so many new Young Members to our Club this year and we look forward to getting to know them all better around the Club, on the water and at other Young Member events during the year ahead. Keep in the loop with Young Member events and updates by liking our Facebook page – Young Members at Sandringham Yacht Club.

Social Report Yet another year has come and gone and our planning for 2016 functions is well under way. I would like to thank the Social Group members who so generously give of their time, expertise and donations in the planning and presentation of all events.

he members are: Robyn Coombs, Peta Davis, Noreen Maher, Tommy Raft, Susan Tuma, Di Tyndall and Margaret Whitbread. Without them, we would not be able to present these events which are for the enjoyment of our Club members and their guests. Another full year of social activities began on 14 February 2015 when we celebrated an AntiValentine’s Day in the Members’ Bar with Jason Vorherr entertaining us. The Bar was decorated with artificial pink roses, poems, chocolates and there were wickedly-named cocktails for all those unromantic sailors to enjoy after Saturday racing. It was a fun afternoon and evening. Sunday 31 May 2015, we presented The 3 Tenors Tribute Lunch and Show. It was a sell-out and a brilliant way to spend a cold wintery Sunday afternoon. The entertainment was excellent, the Italian food was ‘molto bene’ and decorations looked sensational. Red and white checked tablecloths and big jars of spaghetti and red geraniums cast an Italian theme to the room. The spaghetti was later donated to the Family Life charity. This was a very popular function and there is nothing nicer than being serenaded by some talented Italian opera singers, eating beautiful Italian food and sipping a good Australian wine. The event was so popular that on Sunday 17 July, we will present ‘Pavarotti meets Elvis’, what a great combination. Mark the date in your calendar now and book early.
It was great to see the Winter Trivia back in 2015, having had a break for a few years. It is held in the Olympic Room just after key draw on the last Friday of June, July and August each year. Make up a table of friends or come alone and join in with others. Congratulations to the 2015 winners of the Jaffa Trophy, the ‘Intelligence sans Frontieres’ team, who won for a record third time. Thanks also to John Hutton at Boat Books for his continued sponsorship of prizes. The 2015 Sandringham Yacht Club Annual Ball, titled ‘Spring Fling’, was held on Saturday 5 September. This was the first major Club function in our newly decorated Port Phillip Room. The room looked fabulous on the night, with a spring theme, all pink and blossom. The new pendant lighting cast a lovely glow and the sheer curtains added an overall softness to the room. Alistair Murray, our MC for the night, did a wonderful job ‘filling Bill’s shoes’ to the point that he even wore a pair. The band, Jam the Funk, did a great job and the dance floor was full all night. Once again, our thanks go to member Morry Rubenstein from David East Jewellers for his donations towards our raffles. Morry’s ongoing generosity is gratefully received. We also gave away five x $200 cash prizes with a bottle of sparkling wine from Oakdene Winery and the lucky door prize was a dozen roses and fruit and vegetable boxes. The next ball will be held on Saturday 3 September 2016 with the theme Starry, Starry Night, so be ready to make up a table of 10 and book early. Melbourne Cup Day is always a brilliant day for members and friends in the Members’ Bar and 2015 did not disappoint. We had well over 300 people in the Bar and out on the northern podium enjoying the sunshine, food, sparkling wine and cocktails. Tommy Raft, our man-withthe-mike did a fabulous job with lots of sweeps and raffles, prizes for best hat and keeping the day rolling. Our sincere thanks to Noreen Maher from Worldwide Ticketing, major sponsor for the raffle, who generously donated two Emirates Stakes Day
tickets and also to Peta Davis and Oakdene Winery, for bottles of sparkling wine and Tommy Raft for the fruit boxes and flowers and prizes for the kids. Altogether a totally enjoyable day for all and it is getting bigger each year. 2016 started with our Pit Stop Car and Bike Show on Sunday 28 February. What a magnificent day at the Club with 50 plus amazing cars and more than 20 motor bikes lined up for our viewing and listening pleasure. How spectacular it was to stroll around between the beautiful classic and modern cars on show. The motor bikes, organised by SYC member John Armstrong, were obviously much loved by their owners. It is amazing that so many SYC members have such great cars tucked away in their garages and thanks to the owners for bringing them out and making the show such a success. A big crowd at lunch time enjoyed the Des Camm Jazz Band and the warm weather. Club members John Armstrong, Steve Harper, George Shaw and Kevin Wood also assisted Susan Tuma, the Pit Stop instigator, in the lead up and on the day. We plan to hold a similar event again in 2018, so keep polishing your beautiful automobiles and bikes. Finally, many thanks to Naomi in the office who does a huge amount to help our Group run these events which I hope all our members enjoy.

Our Junior sailors on stage with Commodore Kate and officials
Opening Day 2015 Another Opening Day, another trip around the marina in a RHIB and another barrage of water balloons. Saturday 3 October 2015 was a beautiful blue sky and a perfect temperature, flat waters but just so much wind. It is always a pity to call off the Sail Past but it was the right decision to do so.

ompeting with the AFL Grand Final was just too hard, so we accepted that ‘Boating is better with football’ and included the game in our day. The saying that you should never go on stage with children or animals is absolutely true. The star of our formalities was our new Off the Beach Captain, Lachlan Coman. What a great speech he gave. When you listen to such an accomplished young man you know that the future of our Club is in good hands. It was also great to see our high achieving young sailors on the stage. Oli Tweddell, Krystal Weir, Elisa Solly, Jeremy O’Connell, Jack Challands, Julian Sasson and Mischa Suda are Sandringham members to watch out for over the next few years and make us very proud as a Club. Our thanks go to Club members Rob and Rose Ungar, Paul and Helen Commins, George Shaw and Steve and Amanda Aulich for having our guests on their boats in the absence of our usual
VIP boat Mandalay. Many VIPs commented on how they felt part of the Club because they were on a member’s boat. Special guests were our friends from Hokko Yacht Club in Osaka who came from Japan to share our day. Preparations for the Melbourne to Osaka Yacht race in 2018 are under way and it is great to strengthen our ties with our sister city. Congratulations to the best dressed boats. Adrenalin always puts a great effort into dressing up and was the Keelboat winner. Michael Kostos had a whole team of footy umpires on his boat Mustango that kept members in line all night with excessive whistle-blowing and won the Recreational Boating best dressed boat. Sea Dragon won the OTB best dressed boat. A special mention to Magic which also looked fantastic.

SYC Club Person of the Year Club Person of the Year for 2015 was awarded to Dean Robson at the Annual Ball on Saturday 5 September and cheers filled the room when the announcement was made. The list of Dean’s involvement in the Club is long and includes: • Long term commitment to Off The Beach race management and is a National Race Officer • Huge supporter of the Metung Regatta • Involvement in Sail Sandy over many years and now heads the Sail Sandy Committee • Member of the OTB Committee for many years • Past OTB Captain • Served on General Committee. Added to the list is the invaluable technical support Dean has continuously given the Club with our computer systems. Dean is a humble and well deserved winner of this award.
Recreational Boating Club Person of the Year One of the highlights of 2015 was the ever popular Recreational Boating Presentation Breakfast in July. The 2015 award was given to the indomitable Tommy Raft. I think you will all agree he was a wonderful choice. Tommy is always there with a smile on his face and boxes full of beautiful fruit and vegetables in his arms. Tommy is such a generous contributor to our Club, it is welldeserved recognition for the generosity and enthusiasm he brings to the many events he involves himself in and they are many. Congratulations Tommy.
SYC Intermediate of the Year
Congratulations Dean.
SYC Stirrer of the Year The Stirrer of the Year award is presented each year at the Annual Ball to a member who cares about the wellbeing of our Club. The Stirrer is never a whinger nor negative, but a person who is vocal about wanting the best for Sandringham Yacht Club. Jeffrey Woolhouse well and truly fits the bill and was a chuffed recipient in September 2015. Jeffrey writes a weekly article about the Wednesday Wonders race as part of the Windward Buoy and Mark Windward team.
The recipient of the 2015 Lou Abrahams Trophy for the Intermediate of the Year was Nigel Fellowes-Freeman.
The commentary is widely read and answers to Jeffrey’s weekly quiz come from as far away as Ireland. Jeffrey has a quirky sense of humour which allows him to question some rulings in the series and suggest improvements without offending.
Nigel has been a member of Sandringham Yacht Club since 2013 and was introduced to sailing during his family’s annual camping trips to Cornwall in the United Kingdom. The love of water and sailing got the better of the family so they decided to purchase a Moody in order to sail during all seasons, including the famous Boxing Day family sail in two degrees.
His gentle, tongue-in-cheek style is an amusing read and part of the fabric of the Wednesday Wonders Series. Thank you Jeffrey, for being such a huge part of the success of Wednesday Wonders.

Nigel’s love of the ocean and sailing continued past his young years. He headed off to Minorca, Spain for seven months following university to instruct at a sailing school. How much time he spent on the water versus in the bar is still up for debate. He was informed recently that the local bar still has a shot named after him. On his return to UK Nigel continued to sail and took part in a number of Cowes Week regattas. He also volunteered his services to the London Sailing Project which provides opportunities to disadvantaged youth to learn about sailing, responsibility and teamwork. Upon landing in Melbourne in early 2011, Nigel was very lucky to meet an SYC member who invited him down to the Club and out on Bandit. After joining SYC he jumped into every opportunity to be a part of Club life. Nigel has done many ocean races and has been a key member of Bandit’s successful club aggregate team and has approached his role on the Young Members Committee with passion and dedication. Congratulations and thank you Nigel, for all your hard work and contribution to Club life.
Life Member Congratulations to Geoffrey Henderson (Hendo) who was awarded Life Membership at the Ordinary General Meeting in March 2016. Geoff joined Sandringham Yacht Club to sail in International Cadets. After a short time as crew, he quickly came to skipper his own boat Lulu and he stayed with the class until 17 years of age. Each of Geoff’s three children sailed Cadets. The girls took to social sailing but his son, Andrew, has made sailing his life, winning high accolades on the many Wild Oats and currently the America’s Cup team Oracle. Geoff has owned (often in partnership) and sailed several yachts. Sweeney Todd was a 30 foot custom built boat. She raced in the 1977 Sydney to Hobart as the smallest boat in the fleet and came 2nd in Division D. Three years later came Limpid Lizard, a Cole 26. Skippered by Geoff she had many successes including the Junior Offshore Championships, Association Cup wins and success in a Melbourne to Devonport race. Next came Rumbeat a Farr 1104. Again Geoff achieved many successes including Bass Strait crossings and a very memorable Melbourne to Hobart
Westcoaster Geoff has been acknowledged by all who sail with him as a keen yachtsman and excellent skipper. At all times he has promoted the joys of sailing and has been instrumental in the training of all who sail with him, many of whom are now Club members with their own boats. However, his record of sailing is just one aspect of Geoff’s time with SYC and for the countless hours devoted to sailing, he has also contributed considerable personal time and effort to his Club. Geoff was OTB Captain for four years and during his time that community thrived. He was instrumental in the upgrading of rescue boats through fundraising, Easter at Metung continued to grow in numbers and World Cadet Championships were held at SYC. With an eye to the future of junior sailors from SYC, Geoff was key to starting the Junior Overseas Fund now named the Junior Development Fund. From there Geoff continued to provide service to the Club through race management and serving on General Committee. He was heavily involved in the Melbourne to Osaka races as Safety Officer.
In 2003 Geoff became Commodore, a progression from Cadet sailor to the highest level of service to his Club. He is the first Club member to go from Cadets to Commodore. The role of Commodore was hectic at this time as SYC was planning and implementing a massive building program including FMP1, the Ken King Centre and the design for the new clubhouse. To date Geoff is actively involved in maintaining and updating the Club’s library. In consideration of all the years of loyalty and countless hours devoted to SYC and its members, it was proposed by members Mike Stahmer and Richard Jones that the SYC General Committee grant Life Membership to Geoffrey Henderson. Congratulations Hendo.
Reciprocal Club Program The Sandringham Yacht Club Reciprocal Club Program is going from strength to strength, really emerging as a major benefit to SYC members who travel Australia and the world. We have reciprocal arrangements in place with many prestigious yacht clubs around the world, enabling our members to visit and typically enjoy clubhouse access and a warm welcome from host clubs. Above the SYC clubhouse stairway there is a fabulous display of the clubs we have a formal relationship with and we are continually adding to the list. We request that all SYC members who enjoy reciprocal visits provide us with feedback from their visits and also of visits to SYC by visiting club members, which is just as important an aspect of the reciprocal program. A few recent stories: • In the 2015 American fall, Club member Jonathan Kerley took the opportunity to visit Annapolis, Maryland, USA, with SYC providing a reciprocal introduction. “The club is perched over Annapolis Harbour and was busy with club activities and a Porsche car display event. The local college football team, Navy, was playing East Carolina which had the whole

town buzzing with boaters, Navy personnel and students. Attached is a photo of ‘Ego Alley’ where boaters show off their pride and joy in the heart of Annapolis.” (Footnote. Sadly Annapolis Yacht Club was gutted by a fire in late 2015.) • SYC member Leigh Buesnel along with Julie, Hans and Stephanie, visited Hong Kong in January 2016 and visited reciprocal club, Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. In Leigh’s words “We were made welcome and given access to all areas. We had lunch in the Compass Room; a very nice smorgasbord of entrees and mains from a menu and another smorgasbord of desserts. Great food and good value. At the end of the year they will have a bigger marina at the main club and a resort-style precinct with accommodation, with the old parts of the club preserved.” Weifeng Lu and Demolar Lu

• Weifeng Lu and Demolar Lu from Shanghai Sailing Club on Dishui Lake, Shanghai, recently visited Melbourne for the ISAF World Sailing World Cup in St. Kilda. Whilst here they enjoyed a visit as guests at Sandringham Yacht Club, with which they were most impressed. The photo shows them in Sundance Marine’s chandlery at SYC. • Crunch Fitness in Mentone offered SYC members two months free gym membership as part of our reciprocal program. For information on any details of our reciprocal program or to arrange a letter of introduction to a reciprocal club, check in at the front desk of SYC or email: membership@syc.com.au so we can assist you in being welcomed in an exotic location. Visiting sailors are always welcome at SYC too.

Boating Academy Best in the business Sandringham Yacht Club’s own Riccardo Deghi capped off a fantastic season to take out the Instructor of the Year at the Yachting Victoria Awards in June 2015. On the back of this, Yachting Victoria nominated him for the prestigious Yachting Australia Award where he was also successful. His achievements were based on the overwhelming positive feedback that SYC received from course participants and parents which highlighted the impressive contribution he has made to sailing, particularly introducing and retaining children and youth in the sport. Riccardo first came to SYC as a student of the William Angliss Institute’s Diploma of Holiday
Parks and Recreation with a Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation (Water Recreation). Over the last few years the SYC Boating Academy has been extremely fortunate to have him as a part of their team of Sailing Instructors. He has worked tirelessly over the sailing season, completing almost 200 sailing lessons for 12 months during 2015 and 2016. He is a versatile instructor, teaching children as young as five in Little Tackers’ courses, through to adults in keelboat courses. Currently Rikki is back home in Italy working as team manager for four different youth sailing teams. “I would like to work for Sandringham Yacht Club as an instructor for some years to come. I love everything about my job - the fresh air, helping

An update on the SYC Marina T
he Sandringham Yacht Club floating marina turns 23 this year and nowadays it comprises 356 berths and the current ratio of yachts to power boats in the marina is hovering around our desired position of 70/30 respectively. I am often asked “can I get my boat into SYC?”. A current appropriate answer is “as long as the applicant is a Senior Member of the Club and they have a genuine willingness to participate in Club activities and depending on the type of vessel (given our current ratios) and its needs then, yes, at some point we should be able to accommodate your vessel”. When that may be is determined by our occupancy levels and the type of berth available at any given time. The SYC marina occupancy is dynamic and changes regularly. Whilst our occupancy is currently at 100%, opportunities surface for new tenants all the time. So if you are interested in a berth and/or you know someone who is and you believe that boat and person will be a good fit into an active Club, then we would be very pleased to hear from you or them ... show you around, talk about the various berths and explain how it all operates. At SYC we highly value member participation and all marina rental tenants are subject to our Member Participation Scheme. This scheme is far from onerous and is simply designed to promote a vibrant and lively Club. Unfortunately there still remain a number of inactive boats in the marina

and these are typically occupying ‘berths under licence’ ie. the member is licensing the berth for a set tenure. Over time however, all marina berths currently under licence revert back to Club control. When they do, the current thinking is that all these berths will form part of the berth rental pool and every tenant in the pool will be subject to our Member Participation Scheme. In August 2018, 120 marina berths revert from the ‘under licence arrangement’ and they will transition to the berth rental pool. This will be the single biggest reversion of licenced berths since the marina opened in 1993. We will be working with all of these tenants to ensure they have every opportunity to seamlessly transition to our rental pool and continue berthing their vessel at SYC. In a bid to ensure we retain our high occupancies, we will alert the marketplace to the potential berthing opportunities that may arise, should the incumbents not transition to the new arrangement. Rest assured they will be given every single opportunity to do so. Either way this will be a very important moment in time in the marina’s history. As it stands, of all the current floating marinas at clubs in Port Phillip, SYC offers the most affordable berthing. Furthermore, General Committee recently took the decision to apply CPI increases only to marina rentals, whereas previously it was a fixed 4% increase per year. We are strategically committed to active and vibrant Club racing fleets, recreational boating activities and generally
providing events and activities for like-minded boat owners and members to enjoy each other’s company. Maintenance is also big on our marina agenda moving forward. As the marina asset ages we need to spend more and to that end, we are finalising our current maintenance plans to ensure it remains in good condition for the next 15 years. Towards the back end of 2016 we will be conducting our next bi-annual survey to monitor the sea bed depths and we are currently in dialogue with Parks Victoria about dredging areas both internal and external to our lease. The condition of certain sections of the breakwater also form part of these discussions and the need for renourishment. In the past 12 months both Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron and Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron have had vessel fires on their respective marinas. I had the opportunity to attend the RMYS fire de-brief and I came away with one clear message – if there is a fire on your marina, you need to preserve life and immediately contact 000. Preserving assets is a very distant secondary concern as these items can be replaced. Having said that, we need to be well placed to respond appropriately. We have emergency response plans here at the Club and the following fire-fighting aids: 40 fire hose reels situated throughout the marina, a fire hydrant at the entrance to the marina and a portable ‘foam’ fire-fighting backpack in the buoy locker. We are also fortunate to have attentive members and staff onsite seven days per week and the duty management staff are well drilled in contacting 000 and bringing emergency service providers to the marina entrance. Let us hope the need does not eventuate. Stay alert and be safe.

Jacquie Hope – Solo circumnavigation of the globe
Jacquie Hope taking a break from boat works in Greece
J
acquie grew up in New Zealand. At 16 years of age she went sailing, alone, on a 16 foot yacht and came home after four days of vigorous sailing. She was surprised that her father and authorities were out looking for her. Ever since then she has had a dream to circumnavigate.
Along the way Jacquie has owned several sailing boats in the mid 20 to 30 foot length which she raced and cruised largely in Port Phillip waters. In 2005 she purchased a J40 with which she extended her boundaries, sailing the east coast of Australia, circumnavigating Tasmania and New Zealand and several times cruising to and from the Pacific Islands and surrounds. In 2008 she purchased a Bavaria 38 in the Caribbean, taking her through the Panama Canal, sailing to Galapagos Islands and back to the Queensland coast. Jacquie was based at Southport for six years on a 56 foot Elliot and until recently, had a Sydney 46 based in the Mediterranean, cruising for four months a year in the Adriatic around the Greek Islands and Turkey. So far Jacquie has put many thousands of sea miles under her keel. Some fortunate Sandringham Yacht Club members have crewed with her in some of those wonderful places, resulting in great memories to share.
Shanti ready to sail
years ago, Tania Aebi aged 18, successfully circumnavigated in a Contessa 26. Searching online, Jacquie was astounded to find a Sadler 32 for sale in the marina at SYC, her own Club. It was in a state of total neglect, but undeterred, she purchased the vessel. She has since worked her way through a 180 job list to prepare her vessel for her planned voyage. Jacquie has done many of the jobs herself, being very skilled and has also had help with various jobs from several of our members, for which she is very grateful. She engaged experts for other tasks when needed. To sail your yacht offshore it has to be registered as an Australian vessel. A name change seemed
appropriate, she became Shanti. This name means peace, rest, tranquillity, calmness or bliss. Shanti refers to a state of being mentally and spiritually at sea, with enough knowledge and understanding of oneself to be strong in the face of discord or stress. Her estimated time of departure is March 2016. The voyage will see Jacquie sail through Bass Strait, along the east coast of Australia to Darwin. From there she will sail to the east coast of Africa and around the Cape of Good Hope, then to St Helena and across the Atlantic to the Caribbean, through the Panama Canal and across the Pacific to Bundaberg, Australia. Why around alone? This quote from Mischief Among the Penguins says it all. ‘A person can wait a very long time, before finding a compatible crewmate, who has the time and the inclination, to travel the route one wishes to travel.‘
One year ago, Jacquie set about looking for a Sadler Yacht. Why a Sadler, an English boat? It is evolved from the Contessa 32 and has the ability to endure harsh weather and rough seas. A Contessa 32 was the only boat of its size to survive the very severe 1979 Fastnet Race. Some

Misty Blue – One of the Wednesday Wonders of small birds seeking to escape the 70 knot winds found their way inside and had to be shoed away to use the toilet. Barry describes the scene of looking out at the slopes of the island, when a whole slope seemed to be sliding towards them. He was a little concerned, but on closer inspection and in focus, they turn into a battalion of seals. With their regular trips to Tasmania they came to know a few of the locals, one of whom became the Harbour Master of Port Macquarie. After chatting one night about navigating, Bruce said he had never had any problems coming in through Hells Gates. The harbour master offered to check Misty’s charts that Bruce had been using for quite a while. On returning them to him he suggested that it might be time to update the charts as they were 80 years old.
Misty Blue was one of the early yachts in the Wednesday Wonders fleet. She is a Solar 40 Ketch. If you ask the owner Bruce Coram for a description of Misty Blue, he will quickly point out that it is only 39 feet 8 inches and less than 40 feet, just in case you quote the dimensions to anyone whose charges are based on length. Misty Blue was built in 1973 and purchased by Bruce in 1982. It was recommended to him by Stewart Howarth. Bruce had planned to buy an H28 but the offer he made was refused. Many of the Misty crew joined Bruce and the Club at about this time. They were Geoff Wright, Barry Read, Phil Hosken, Ron Allen, Graeme Miller, John Armstrong and Cliff McDonald. Stewart Howarth also joined the crew when cruising. A few years ago Bruce was claiming that they had the oldest crew in Wednesday Wonders as they had some 400 years of sailing experience on board. Apart from racing on Wednesdays Misty Blue made yearly trips including Sydney and Adelaide, but most frequently a favourite destination was across Bass Strait to Tasmania. Bruce introduced quite a few sailors to their first off shore trip. In the cabin of Misty there is a list of some 17 yachties who have ventured out through the heads with Bruce on Misty. Her destination was dictated by the weather that they encountered. Sometimes they only got to Deal Island. They did spend time at Maatsuyker Island, the southernmost island of the Australian continental shelf. At 43˚.39.5 south 145˚16.2 east that is about as far as you would want to go. Maatsuyker Island had the last manned lighthouse in Australia. Sheltering in Haulage Cove for the night they were invaded by the locals. Hundreds 34 |
Off the Wind | 2016 EDITION
Such long passages did require careful planning. The crew took some responsibility for this. On one occasion, before Bruce had arrived at the boat, the crew had about a 10 foot stack of cans of liquid refreshments. Hearing Bruce was on the way they hurriedly packed them into the quarter berth. Bruce was perplexed and could not work out why Misty Blue was leaning on quite an angle to port. Bruce asked “What are we going to do”? The crew replied it was no real problem – they would just drink their way out of it. Their planning was fairly accurate as the last of the 49 slabs was consumed after they entered the heads on completion of their journey. On their trips they were well supplied with fresh fish, which they caught along the way and often were given fish by the locals. The Misty Blue Trophy that is contested by Wednesday Wonders comes from the tiller of Misty Blue. It snapped under great strain during the inaugural fun race in 1986. It became the Dad’s Army Challenge Trophy and was awarded to the yacht that most consistently supported Wednesday Wonders. In 2009 it was discovered in a cupboard and was given a new life as the Misty Blue Trophy and is awarded each season to the WW skipper having the best average start time closest to their handicap.
Another trophy related to Misty Blue is the Noelle Corman Trophy. This is presented annually for the highest place getter with combined scores from Wednesday and Sunday races, winter and summer. It was donated by Bruce in memory of his wife. Noelle was a Sandringham Yacht Club volunteer for 25 years. Her time was mainly spent in the tower four days a week. On Mondays at lunchtime Bruce can now be seen at the Ken King Centre having a gourmet BBQ with some of his crew and a few other sailors of the same vintage. When I had just purchased Pippa, my first keel yacht, I was offered lots of advice from this group of gentlemen. Bruce and Misty Blue’s crew were very encouraging when I first started to race in Wednesday Wonders and still are. It was a very positive introduction to SYC. Bruce has just celebrated his 90th birthday and now Misty Blue is up for sale after 34 years. If the weather is pleasant you could still see Bruce going out for a little sail by himself like he did in late February 2016, “as it was such a lovely day”. So you have the opportunity be the next owner of Misty Blue and sail into the wide blue yonder. Or just join in Wednesday Wonders and keep adding to the Misty Blue tales and become part of a legend.

Tasmanian Cruise March 2015 March Bass Strait Cruise
T
he cruise of Tasmania in March 2015 was lead by Rob and Rose Ungar in their 72 ft Princess R&R. They were accompanied by eight other boats and for many of them it was their first taste of offshore cruising. What a great trip and even though it was not our usual March weather, over all it was not too bad. Just a few splashes of salt water over the boats and a couple of rocky nights, especially alongside the Lady Barron wharf. The statistics as recorded by R&R were 747 miles logged, 42 engine hours (25 generator hours), with a duration of 15 days from Queenscliff to Queenscliff at an average speed of 17.7 knots. Most of the boats gathered in the Queenscliff marina the night before departure and we all enjoyed meeting one another and attending to those last minute details before a dawn start the next morning. Nine power boats in convoy departed through Port Phillip heads and headed out into Bass Strait with a perfect forecast for the day’s run to Refuge Cove. It was not long into the trip when Imagination had gearbox issues and she returned to Queenscliff in company with Mustango. It was from this point on that we knew we were all in company with some very special people and it was shown what like-minded people who share a passion can and will do for each other. Now with just seven boats in the cruise we first headed for Port Welshpool to refuel, then it was back to Refuge Cove for the night. A glorious run for the whole day, we finished with 18:00 fellowship on the beach. Our first night in Refuge Cove was without incident until the forecasted weather changed, when R&R had a midnight visit from a nearby yacht. A kiss on her side to prove to all that they did get too close, even some ***** midnight words from her skipper were heard by a few across the bay. Our adventure to Deal and Flinders Islands was cut short due to the forecast strong westerlies that were due over Bass Strait for the next few days. So it was just a lunch time stop to at least see that Deal Island really does exist. A very prudent decision was made to head straight through to the sheltered waters of the Tamar River and the Tamar Yacht Club marina at Beauty Point. We timed our arrival at Low Head to coincide with the arrival of Mustango, who had accompanied Imagination back to Queenscliff on the first day. The crew of Mustango had not only stayed with Imagination while limping back to Queenscliff, but waited while investigations as to what her problems were, which at this time were unfixable. They then invited all Imagination’s crew to join them on board Mustango for the remainder of the cruise. Then, having never before crossed Bass

Strait in anything smaller than the Spirit of Tasmania or slower than a Boeing 737 they crossed Bass Strait from Queenscliff to Beauty Point in 12 hours. A full week was enjoyed exploring the Tamar Valley, river and surrounding country side. Everyone enjoyed their time here and watching the weather with reports coming in of 90 knots at the Promontory, 80 knots at Hogan Island and 51 knots at Flinders Island airport- this was indeed the better place to be, safely tucked up in the Tamar Yacht Club’s marina at Beauty Point. Lots of social interaction between the cruisers was had and getting to know complete strangers was part of this enjoyment. The organised trips and impromptu speaking from solo round-the-world sailor, Ken Gourlay and John Joyce’s presentation of their recent cruise to the Louisiades Archipelago, PNG, added to this longer than planned stop over. A special thank you to Stuart Jackson for his generous sponsorship of the wine tour and our farewell dinner. We started with nine boats, the return of Imagination left us with eight and then we had two boats, Pearl and Kisha, leave to go home via Stanley. That left us with six boats to head back to Flinders Island. Again the dreaded gremlin stepped in and issues with Jenisiph saw her having to return up river to Launceston for some outside assistance before she could return home, which she did via Stanley arriving the day after us. So then we were a group of five boats enjoying a very pleasant few days at Lady Barron on Flinders Island. Apart from the great island tour, the even better Lady Barron pub and Rob’s 6 o’clock swill that by now had become a habit, the piece de resistance was the early morning visit by the island trader from Bridport. On the first night she loaded and unloaded freight, departing at about 04:00, but not to be out done she returned the next night at midnight to load cattle and with the last cow aboard she departed at 06:00. By now we were all set for a much needed peaceful night’s sleep, but with a 20-25 knot westerly blowing we had a 1-2 metre sea running under the wharf which made it very interesting getting on and off the boats and even more interesting for sleeping. Oh, the joys of cruising.
Our Intrepid travellers enjoying the hospitality of The Tamar River Yacht Club, Beauty Point
The five remaining boats headed off to Deal Island. Then we lost Evening Star to a broken water pump shaft so she headed back across to Port Welshpool, arriving at 01:30. The story of her trip is best told by those two intrepid sailors in their words at a later date. She was accompanied back to Welshpool by Eagle III which also needed to refuel for the return to Melbourne. Again David, this was a much appreciated gesture for you to remain close at hand and to wait up for Evening Star to arrive safely into Port Welshpool, then to allow the crew of Evening Star, minus their wives who by now had settled into life aboard R&R, to return as guests aboard Eagle III to Melbourne. So then there were three boats to leave Deal Island at 04:00 on our final day’s run back to Queenscliff, although we met up with Eagle III at the Promontory for the last 100 mile run to our home port. We arrived into Queenscliff just before the forecast southerly change and in time for all the crews of Cristalee, Mustango and R&R to continue the 6 o’clock swill at the local pub. So with Pearl and Kisha home on the Friday, Cristalee, Mustango, R&R, Eagle III all back on Saturday and Jenisiph safely back on Sunday after a solo run across the strait, Evening Star laid up in Welshpool and Imagination still awaiting repairs in Queenscliff, we had completed the planned March Bass Strait cruise. There is a lot more that will come out of this trip in time, especially from all the crews and wives as they relive their own special moments. Since this trip, several of our cruise-in-company friends have got the taste for blue-water cruising and have upgraded their boats. Others just loved this experience. As a result, those who can arrange time off work will head east to Port Fairy via Apollo Bay, departing Queenscliff Thursday 17 March 2016, for a week or so.

Tilting at Windmills – A four summer journey In 2007, encouraged by John Alexander, I decided to ship Tilting at Windmills to Europe. We had done quite a bit here. New Zealand and back twice, spectating at the Americas Cup races, circumnavigating all three of the main islands of New Zealand; twice done a Hamilton Island Race Week week, the Brisbane to Gizo Race, a Port Lincoln Week and several Sydney and Melbourne to Hobarts. We had sailed all around Tasmania, explored the archipelagos of the Great Australian Bight and been to Lord Howe Island.
Cowes Week is capped every second year by the Fastnet Race, which we attempted until forced to retire due to mainsail problems and sea sickness.
The boat was surveyed prior to shipping. The hull had not moved in any way since its build by Norman R Wright & Sons in 1994. The Wrights had built a truly great boat, planked in Duracore which are blocks of end grain balsawood sheathed between veneers of hoop pine with cedar at the ‘strong’ points.
After the Fastnet Race we sailed up-Channel past Dover, along the Belgian and Dutch coasts to the German Bight, entered the Elbe River and made transit through the Kiel Canal to the Baltic Sea. Passing through the Kiel Canal is a delight, a soothing pastoral passage through fields and villages to the city of Kiel and the Baltic Sea.
During the summer of 2007 we sailed around the English Channel. Our first race was from Cowes to St Malo from which we returned through the Alderney Race, having stopped at St Helier in Jersey on the way. We sailed in Cowes Week and learned about the intricacies of Channel tides.
During the next three summers we cruised the Baltic Sea, Norway and Scotland. In the Baltic we raced with KSSS (Royal Swedish Yacht Club) in the Gotland Runt. We passaged through the myriad of islands which lie packed together, on the coasts of Sweden and Finland. We lay for three weeks in

a marina in St Petersburg and returned via Finland, Sweden and Denmark to Laboe, near Kiel. One highlight was our transit through the Gota Canal which crosses Sweden. It was strange to have the boat at an elevation above sea level of some 90m or so, the mast carving through trees. In 2009 we cruised the Norwegian coast. From the North Sea we first landed in Norway near Stavanger and worked our way to Bergen in glorious weather. Heading towards the northern coast the nights became shorter, to a point where there was no darkness at all. We crossed the Arctic Circle, an event celebrated with champagne, even though it was only 05:00. Tromsø, at 69° 39°N, was our terminal destination where crew change and catering occurred before turning for the south. This is the furthest Tilting at Windmills has been from the equator, more than balancing our highest southern hemisphere latitude of 46° 58°S, which is Stewart Island, the most southerly of New Zealand’s three main islands. One of our best sailing days was an exhilarating spinnaker run along the west coast of Senja, the island which encloses approaches to Tromsø. We passed fingers of fjords, each a keyhole in the land and each giving access to sunless villages tucked between mountains showing patches of snow. The Lofoten Islands are sensational being remote, arctic and dramatic with walls of mountains facing the sea, surrounding flatter lowlands in the interiors. The heavy tides found in the Lofotens are personified by the maelstrom, the whirlpool made famous by Jules Verne and Edgar Allan Poe. The summer of 2010 saw Tilting at Windmills cruise the Hebrides, the Orkneys and the Shetland Islands, off the coast of Scotland. We sailed, again from Kiel, across the North Sea to Inverness and came through the Caledonian Canal, which traverses Scotland, to the west coast near Fort William. This is close to the whisky producing island of Islay. Here one day we anchored off the distillery which produces Lagavulin malt whisky. The impression we made on the guide who showed us through the distillery was such that she left us unattended in the tasting room to sample the vintages and grades. With the quality of our seamanship somewhat impaired, we had to weigh anchor as the yacht started to ground at
low water and repair to Port Ellen, the home of Johnny Walker. We made our way towards The Minch, the fairway between Lewis and Harris Islands and the mainland. We sailed out to the islands of St Kilda, a small cluster some miles out in the Atlantic, where we anchored overnight in a low groundswell at Traffic off St Petersburg midsummer, the shortest night of the year. Cape Wrath defines the north-west corner of the United Kingdom in much the same way as Cape Grim defines the north-west corner of Tasmania. Rounding it, with its vicious tides, could have been worse than the ‘soft rounding’ that our log records. This is a turning point for boats heading to the Orkney Islands, Scapa Flow and places further north such as Fair Isle and the Shetlands. Encounters with stone circles and middens remind the visitor of the Norse influence which lingers here.
From Lerwick on Shetland Island, crossing to Norway, Tilting at Windmills made her way through an oilfield, the sunrise lighting the rigs as if they are indeed made of gold. We attended a meet of yachts from the Royal Cruising Club at Skudeneshaven near Stavanger in Norway. From there we made a fast efficient delivery to find ourselves back in Cowes, front door to leafy Isle of Wight, conscious that a circle had been completed during the four-summer adventure. Then we shipped the boat home.

A Leap of Faith
Jeremy on the world stage I think I say it to myself every year, but this summer felt like it was over before it began. December 2015 started with a successful World Cup regatta in Melbourne where I finished 3rd. I was then placed 6th at the Australian Laser Nationals in Belmont, Lake Macquarie, NSW and had a good idea of the things I needed to work on over the next few months before the start of the European summer sailing season. After a brief couple of weeks of rest and relaxation, I packed my bags and made my way to Middle Harbour in Sydney, to train at the National Training Centre with the rest of the Australian Laser Squad. A large focus of these camps is time on the water so we were straight into it, putting in some long hours on the water. One of the great things about our training group is the competitive nature of it. Everything is a challenge and a competition from the sailing itself, to who can get out on the water first or who can make the best lunch. It pushes you to be your best all the time and always keep looking for ways to get better. Some days after training I am left feeling like all I want to do is sleep on the couch. But there is always something to be done, whether it is organising accommodation for the next venue, planning logistics or going to the gym. At the conclusion of our month of training in Sydney we all parted ways and headed home. It is now March 2016 and the next adventure for me begins in a few days time when I am off to Palma de Mallorca, Spain, for my first European event of the year. I am feeling good about my sailing and looking forward to seeing what I can do against the best guys in the world. I will be sure to keep everyone updated as my season progresses.

I
n March of 2014 I decided to take the leap of faith and leave my consultancy job and discover if I could make a living from sailing around the world. What a ride it was. I have made many great life-long friends, had once-in-a-lifetime experiences and learnt more about myself in the past two years than I thought was possible. It all started by working as a skipper for The Yacht Week, the largest flotilla sailing company in the world, having completed both my RYA Yachtmaster Coastal and Skipper Academy to be able to work for them. The training alone was a thrill. I lived in a world that is defined as ‘nothing like the real world’ sailing around the most amazing areas of the world, making friends with new people every week and enjoying some partying with them all along the way. In 2015 the company asked me to take on a role looking after all the skippers around the world
and I sailed in the British Virgin Islands, lived in Croatia for six months and got to sail in Thailand exploring every day. In my role I was also responsible for teaching all of our new skippers, educating and training them on how to be a professional in an environment of party, music and sailing. It was an absolute dream and amazing to see them evolve into confident, competent and successful charter skippers, which was something words just cannot describe. I had truly worked out a way to make a living out of sailing while having fun and exploring the world. I would highly recommend a life of working in sailing overseas for anyone who has ever thought it might even be a possibility and I will cherish these memories for the rest of my life.

Our fabulous Finn sailor Dear fellow sailors,
the World Championships in Italy shortly after the team will be announced.
I am currently vying for Olympic selection to represent Australia in the Finn Class at the 2016 Rio Olympics. When I was a kid I always wanted to sail at the Olympic Games and decided from a young age that I would dedicate everything to achieving this goal. Now only a few months away from the Games, I have the most important events of my life to gain selection. It is a feeling that is hard to describe, putting in over 10 years of blood, sweat and tears to achieve this goal. It comes down to a few competitions as to whether I will be able to live out the dream I had when I was a kid sailing my Optimist.
However, I have used that time to help prepare myself for this challenge and am excited about the next couple of months. My training has been going well and I feel I am in a good place. My events will be taking place in Hyeres, France and
I would not be able to travel the world racing and training without the help from my support team and I am extremely fortunate to have such a great group of people supporting me along this journey. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all for their support. Sandringham Yacht Club and its members are a part of this team, so thanks to all of you who have supported me on this journey. I hope I can sail smart and fast and make you all proud by representing the Club and Australia at the Olympic Games. Cheers,
Oli Tweddell
The 4.7 Laser Program
Towing the 47 Squad
I
t has been a really exciting time for Laser sailing at Sandringham Yacht Club. Each Tuesday night over a six week period a group of keen young sailors have been training off the breakwater at SYC. The first program was a girls only program including three Cadet girls Tilly Davis, Jess Butters and Zoe Rae jumping into the Laser to improve
their skills for the upcoming Cadet National titles. New members Emma and Grace Hawkless along with Kate Dunwoody and Noa Abrahams completed the group. We worked on core skills as well as tactics and strategy on the water. During the 2015 winter season there was also a lecture series open to all O’pen Bic, Cadet and Laser 4.7 sailors. Our latest group of sailors is Ethan Hosking, Ben Walsh, Matt Ross, Sarah Gleeson and Maia Rose. They have all shown some impressive skills sailing in 25 plus knots in a blustery easterly inside the breakwall. The program is designed to upskill our young sailors so they can smoothly transition into the Olympic pathway class of the Laser. The ultimate goal is to provide a stepping stone into Yachting Victoria programs such as the Victorian Sailing Team and the Victoria Institute of Sport. During the latest Victorian Laser State titles the group posted some fantastic results. Maia Rose finished 1st Junior and 5th overall, Sarah Gleeson was placed 8th, Kate Dunwoody placed 10th,
Emma Hawkless placed 11th, Grace Hawkless placed 12th and Matthew Ross 20th. The next step for SYC is to build the Laser racing fleet on a Sunday afternoon. A group of current and past Optimist dads have been having some fierce battles on Sundays and also Friday evenings. Great job Andrew Crayshaw, Nathan Goss and Armando Distefano. A big thank you to PSA/H20 Sports Academy for providing charter boats, to Zhik for providing bibs, to Harken, to Victorian Laser Association and also to Tudor Insurance. Also a huge thank you to Sandringham Yacht Club and its staff for supporting the next generation of Laser sailors. “I have really enjoyed and loved Krystal’s coaching at SYC. Each session we focus on new and different things, and we have a blast out on the water. Krystal has really helped me refine my skills, and has helped me become a better sailor” said Kate Dunwoody. Twilight Entertainment
Field, See and Mason
W
hat a fabulous line up of quality musicians we had once again for our twilight season which runs from the beginning of October to the end of March.
Almost every week we had live entertainment after twilight racing either in the Members’ Bar or the Harbour View Restaurant. We had a variety of performers in the Bar which included soloist Andy Healy, front-man for the party band The Crawdaddys. In November we had the wellknown Pardoners who linked up with famous Lindsey Field who, when he is not supporting John Farnham, plays with Sam See and Glyn Mason to form the trio, Field, See and Mason. Who could forget their emotional rendition of Leonard Cohen`s Hallelujah? On 26 November 2015 there was a change of pace with some good old classic rock from our mates, the Andy Wilson Triad. On the last twilight for 2015 the party was on with The Crawdaddys. They sure got the jingle bells rocking for the Christmas party. Summer turned up the heat with our fabulous regular solo artist Peter Chapman, followed by
one of our favourite duos Fabian and Brock with their special guest Peter Newson. These guys brought the house down with more encores than the Bar could cope with. They were followed by Jason Vorherr and Gary Young who entertained us with their beautiful harmonies. Jason is also a member of Daryl Braithwaite’s band. Gary Eastwood, well, finally after years of chasing him, we pinned him down to perform at the Sandringham Yacht Club and he was well worth it, such a pro. It later turned into a bit of a jam session when Gary was joined by musos Andy Wilson and Steve Ely. Next was a duo from the well-known blues band, The Hornets made up of, guitarist Jeff Burstin whose 1970s band Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons an Aria Hall of Fame inductee, and singer/songwriter Craig Horne. St Patrick’s Day saw a touch of Irish as we enjoyed our well-loved soloist Tim Watson who previously was the lead singer from the band Taxi Ride. As our season drew to an end we schmoozed to
the very cool sounds of Sean Marchetti and Pez. The last race of the 2015-16 twilight season, known as the last blast, saw our grand finale with the famous and much-loved Wendy Stapleton trio, featuring Paul Norton and Gerry Hale. What an awesome night. When there was no entertainment in the Bar, we had the pleasure of chilling out to the soothing music from our very own Sandringham Yacht Club staff member, Nathan, in the Restaurant. I would like to say thank you to our wonderful musicians who did an amazing job and to all our members who support us every week. Well that is it for another season, folks. I hope you all enjoyed the acts we organised and please do not hesitate to approach Naomi in the office or myself if you have any suggestions for next year. Just to mention, these musicians play, rain, hail, wind or shine, so if sailing is cancelled on the night, still make your way down to the Club and enjoy. Until then, happy sailing.

he Victorian Combined Yacht Clubs Annual ‘Victory Cup’ has been played since 1947. History shows it was previously held by Royal Brighton Yacht Club, Royal Geelong Yacht Club, Royal Motor Yacht Club, Mornington Yacht Club and Sandringham Yacht Club. Over the years the Victory Cup has been played at various golf clubs and participants always enjoying a great social day of golf, meeting or catching up with members from other yachts clubs. 2015 proved no different despite a fairly glum day of weather. The Woodlands golf course still presented in fantastic condition despite the weather and members from Sandringham, Brighton, Mornington and Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron gathered to enjoy the course and facilities at Woodlands Golf Club. The popularity of the event continues with the opportunity to play on one of Melbourne’s best courses. It is also great to see the lady members getting involved in the day. Returned somewhat wet but still happy, players gathered for some warm food and cold drinks to hear the results as listed.

Key Draw – the end of an era June and November 2015 saw the end of an era for our key draw/chook raffle hosts, with John Stewart and John Armstrong respectively spinning the wheel one last time after 25 or so years of service and dedication. Speeches and presentations were held for both Johns at the time and were shown the appreciation of a job well done for so long. The raffle and key draw is now organised by Christine Jenkins and Julie Southwick with guest hosts on the microphone including Bill Stubbs, Charles Pukallus and Dean Robson. Over the years monies raised from the raffle have been used to support the Club and members with such items as binoculars in the Members’ Bar, an AED defibrillator and contributions to the weather information screen in the Members’ Bar.
For those not familiar with key draw, it is run every Friday night throughout the year with a break in December to mid-January. All current financial members’ names are put in a barrel and if you are present and your name is drawn you win that week’s jackpot. If the lucky member is not present, the jackpot prize pool increases weekly by $25
and is capped when it reaches $1000. Remember that you must be present in the Bar at the time of the draw. So hit the jackpot and come down to the Members’ Bar from 18:30 on Friday nights and ‘Be In It To Win It’. Just another benefit of being a member of Sandringham Yacht Club.
Cycling – SYC Social Rides Throughout the year, we meet at the Club at 08:00 on a Saturday and do a 30 to 40 km easy ride on the bike path or on the road for the more experienced riders. We have a barbecue breakfast and coffee back at the Ken King Centre from 09:30. It is open to all ages and abilities. Keep an eye out on the SYC website for planned dates and register your interest with me at amurray@ronstan.com.au. It is great fun and good for you. So get pedalling.

Japanese Feast This annual event in the Harbour View Restaurant just gets bigger and better every year. Since its inception in 2010, nearly 700 members and guests have enjoyed Kol’s famous Japanese Feast. 2015 saw a sell-out on both Friday 3 and Saturday 4 September, with 165 diners enjoying the Club’s Executive Chef, Kol Gemmell’s six-course degustation menu which incorporated unique Japanese dishes and a glass of Japanese Sakura cocktail on arrival. Kol is very passionate about his Japanese food having trained in Japan for a number of years and run two Japanese restaurants, so of course the patrons were not disappointed. The good news is that Kol has recently returned from a trip to Japan, so his menu will be filled with new creations and will not want to be missed. This ever popular event will again be held over two nights, Friday 1 and Saturday 2 July 2016. Be sure to mark these dates in your diary and book via Reception on 03 9599 0999. Bookings open on 19 May 2016.
SYC Seafood Cookoff The third annual SYC Seafood Cookoff was held in the Harbour View Restaurant on Friday 14 August 2015 and as per all special events Kol runs in the HVR, they just get bigger and better. For those unaware of how this event runs, Kol asks his team of chefs to come up with their own seafood dish and then prepare and cook it on the night. Patrons are unaware of which dish has been prepared and cooked by which chef and are asked to rate each course to determine who will be crowned King Prawn. Dishes featured in the 2015 event included crab and shiitake rotolo, scallops, hapuka, ocean trout, tempura soft shell crab and also oyster tempura on arrival and a dessert assiette of lemon curd paste, crushed honeycomb and vanilla panna cotta. It was Kevin Ko’s (Sous Chef, Port Phillip Room) lime-cured hapuka with coconut and
pomegranate, served on betel leaves that saw him proudly steal the crown from the 2014 winner, Kol Gemmell. So the big question now is who, if anyone, will steal the crown from Kevin in 2016? Be sure to find out for yourself and put Friday 12 August 2016 in your diary. Call reception on 03 9599 0999 to book from 29 June 2016.

SYC Events for Charity SYC’s primary charities are the Sandringham Hospital and Challenge – supporting kids with Cancer.
Sandringham Hospital SYC supports the Sandringham Hospital through three alternating events; the 24 Hour Charity Bike Ride, Oaks Day Ladies Luncheon and the Mad Paddle. The Hospital has recently announced plans to build a $2.5m Day Procedure Centre that will enhance the experience for patients having surgery. Since expanding its surgical program in 2014, Sandringham Hospital has seen a 50 per cent increase in same day procedures. The centre will cater for patients undergoing a range of procedures such as orthopaedic, general, ophthalmology and gynaecology surgery and will be built next to the existing operating theatres at Sandringham Hospital. The plans for the centre follow consultation with the community, conducted by the hospital in 2012, to identify how it could improve care for its growing and changing community. By giving to Sandringham Hospital’s Day Procedure Centre Capital Appeal you will be helping to care for current and future generations of our community. For more information about the Sandringham Hospital Appeal or to make a donation, visit: www.sandringhamhospitalappeal.org.au
24 Hour Charity Bike Ride Sandringham Yacht Club, although a yacht club, has quite a connection with cycling. The Club likes to support complementary activities such as cycling, which bring our members together and we have now held two SYC Social Rides from the Club. Many members ride bikes for fitness and fun and quite a few were in the 2015 24 Hour Charity Bike Ride for SYC’s chosen charity, Sandringham Hospital. On a great evening in September last year the group handed a cheque for $150,000 to Judy Reeves of Sandringham Hospital.

All dressed up for Oaks Day fun!
Oaks Day Luncheon Thursday 3 November 2015 saw the beverages flowing and the rain pouring. What better place to be than the second annual Sandringham Yacht Club Oaks Day Luncheon? The Port Phillip Room was filled with just over 200 ladies who enjoyed a fun day out with scrumptious food, a Pimm’s cocktail on arrival, beverages, auction items, spot prizes and gorgeous views, all whilst raising some money for our friends at Sandringham Hospital. Our MC, Mayor at the time, Felicity Frederico, kept formalities to a minimum to allow maximum catching up and chatter amongst the guests.
Kate Mitchell, Judy Reeves, Felicity Frederico
The ladies then continued the afternoon in the Harbour View Restaurant and danced away to Fabian, Broc and Pete who entertained until early evening. Collectively, all were extremely generous on the day and the luncheon raised more than $12,000 which went towards Day Procedure Centre at the Hospital. SYC Commodore Kate Mitchell and Councillor Felicity Frederico presented Sandringham Hospital’s Director of Nursing, Judy Greeves, with the cheque in December 2015. Judy also kindly presented Kate with a plaque of recognition of SYC’s generous support. Be sure to mark Thursday 3 October in your diaries for the 2016 event.

Heard in the Members’ Bar
A selection of some serious, some silly, some sensible and some salacious snippets ... be careful, you never know who is listening!
From an elderly gentleman and long-time member: “I do not like it when they cancel any race. It means that it is one less race I will be able to enjoy in my life time”.
“Never mind the yacht – we were all uninjured.” “We go right up to the tower at the start because we are colour blind and cannot read the numbers.”
“No sense in trying to squeeze up little yachts – we pass them so quickly anyway.” “I always wear orange so my yacht is easy to identify.”
“It is a good race if we pass the little red yacht – never mind about winning.” “I am not sure of the boat name selection for Doesn’t Matter…can you imagine: “Mayday, Mayday, Mayday – Doesn’t Matter, Doesn’t Matter, Doesn’t Matter.”
“He was too busy taking photos of dolphins to get the boat sailing well.”
“Ballet dancers don’t sing!” “If you had given Captain Cook an apple in his day he would have eaten it!”
“Have you noticed the older you get the better you were?” “Going downwind does not give any entertainment for the crew. I had to tell them to put away their cards. I am considering installing an alarm clock on the mast of our yacht.” A finance query from confused member directed to a General Committee member: “Is there enough room in the budget to record Harpo and to pay someone to decipher what he says?” From one immediate past official to another well-known identity: “I was looking at that new yacht that you are sailing on and I could only see two wheels. That is most unfortunate for you because where is yours?”
