This collection was inspired by the rural landscape of my hometown, Taichung, Taiwan. When I was a child, I enjoyed hearing bulbul birds singing and observe them foraging near my house every day. The Latin name of this plant is ‘Alocasia’ and it has a lovely common name which is called ‘Giant Elephant's Ear’ due to its shape. The Light-vented bulbul, also known as Chinese bulbul and White-vented bulbul, is a species of bird in the bulbul family with the Latin name ‘Pycnonotus’. The Bulbul birds like pecking the seeds pods of Elephant Ears as their food. I chose the retro colour theme to represent the nostalgia for my childhood. Besides, I drew the vector illustration and patterns in Adobe Illustrator and created the mockups in Adobe Photoshop.

Moodboard & Colour Palette

This collection was inspired by the interesting common names of plants. Some plants were named after the name of animals or the feature of animals due to their shape. I selected three popular plants for this ‘Hybrid Creatures’ collection and literally replaced the characters of three animals with the plants. The first idea is ‘Rabbit and Rabbit Ears Succulents’. The plant’s Latin name is ‘Kalanchoe Tomentosa’ a.k.a. ‘Panda Plant’ in English and this hybrid creature was inspired by its nickname in Mandarin ‘兔耳’ which means ‘Rabbit Ears’. The second one is ‘Stag and Staghorn Ferns’. It is obviously noticed that its English common name was from the leaves looking like deer antlers. The final concept is ‘Tiger and Tiger Ears Plants’. The plant’s Latin name is ‘Saxifraga Stolonifera’ a.k.a. ‘Strawberry Begonia’ or ‘Creeping Saxifrage’ in English, and its Chinese common name ‘虎 耳草’ which means ‘Tiger Ears Grass’. I continued using the retro colour theme to go on my series of animals with plants, but I adjusted the darkness of the background to suit more the mood of the autumn/winter trends. Besides, I drew the vector illustration and patterns in Adobe Illustrator and created the mockups in Adobe Photoshop.
