We dedicate this issue to the Sikh community. In this issue we feature various aspects of Sikhism starting from Vaisakhi , not many know that a sikh wedding is called Anand Karaj. Vaisakhi (also spelled Baisakhi) is a festival which celebrates the founding of the Sikh community known as the Khalsa. It is celebrated on April 14 each year.

Henna or Mehandi is applied on the hands and feet of the bride between lots of celebration and feasting. The aunts, cousins and friends of the bride also apply mehndi on their hands singing and dancing throughout the ceremony. Gharoli is observed in the morning of the wedding day, at the groom's home. During the occasion, the groom's sister-in-law, accompanied by other female relatives, go to a nearby well or Gurudwara to fill an earther pitcher (gharoli) with water, which is later used to bath and the groom
in buttermilk. Kaleeren are also tied to her wrist by the female relatives. Sehra is tied to the bride groom s head by his sisters while gar lands of currency notes adorn his neck. He mounts a decorated horse (ghodi) and leave for the wedding venue. This is followed by the wedding ceremony, which is called 'milni'. The groom's sisters tie a sehra (floral veil) to his fore head. They adorn his neck with a garland of currency notes. The groom's procession then heads towards the bride's house, where the “milni cere mony” is held. During the “milni ceremony”, the bride and the groom's families embrace and wish each other.

Baisakhi Festival today is celebrated as the Sikh New Year and the founding of the Khalsa Panth. History of Baisakhi traces its origin from the cele brations of 1699 organized by the Tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh. The Guru formed Khalsa - Brot herhood of Saint Soldiers to fight against tyranny and oppression.After the death of Guru Teg Baha dur, his son, Guru Gobind Singh became the next Guru of the Sikhs. Guru Gobind Singh wished to instill courage and strength to sacrifice among his fellow men. Sikh Historians mention that to fulfill his dream, Guru Gobind Singh called on the historic Baisakhi Day congregation of Sikhs at Keshgarh Sahib near Anandpur on March 30, 1699. Baisakhi Festival falls on the first day of Baisakhi month (April-May) according to Sikh Calendar. For this reason, Baisakhi is also popularly known as Vaisakhi. According to English calendar, the date of Baisakhi corresponds to April 13 every year and April 14 once in every 36 years. Auspicious date of Baisakhi is celebrated all over India under different names and different set of rituals and celebrations. Baisakhi date coincides with 'Rongali Bihu' in Assam, 'Naba Barsha' in Bengal, Puthandu in Tamil Nadu and 'Pooram Vishu’ in Kerala.During the day people of Sikh faith take out a Baisakhi procession under the leadership of Panj piaras. The procession moves through the major localities of the city amidst the rendition of devotional songs by the participating men, women and children. Mock duels, bhangra and gidda performances make the procession joyous and colourful.
For the large farming community of Punjab and Haryana, Baisakhi marks a New Year’s time as it is time to harvest rabi crop. On Baisakhi, farmers thank god for the bountiful crop and pray for good times ahead. People buy new clothes and make merry by singing, dancing and enjoying the best of festive food. Basically a farmers' festival, Baisakhi is a time to enjoy before beginning the hard work of harvesting and as such, its celebration requires no prayers or fasting. However, people do go to temples after taking a bath in the nearby river. The Sikhs offer prayers in gurudwaras to commemo rate the founding day of their religion. The Granth Sahib, which was designated the eternal guru of Sikhs by Guru Gobind Singh, is taken out in pro cession and kirtans are organized in gurudwaras. Baisakhi is a harvest festival and the tough agric ultural operation of harvesting is rendered into a lighter occupation by many community festivities such as the Bhangra dance by men, who pound the ground with vigorous steps to the accompaniment of traditional music. Women too, break into the revelry of dances, principally the Gidda dance, executed with fervor and rhythmic exactitude.
