Sydney – June 2022 ab [intra]

School Matinee performances, Roslyn Packer Theatre, Sydney: • Tuesday 7 June 2022, 12pm (secondary) • Thursday 9 June 2022, 11am (primary) Since premiering in 2018, Rafael Bonachela’s ab [intra] has seen a sold-out European tour and two cancelled seasons due to COVID-19. In June 2022, Sydney Dance Company is presenting the long-awaited encore season. ab [intra], meaning ‘from within’ in Latin, is “an exploration of our primal instincts, our impulses and our visceral responses” (Rafael Bonachela). From tenderness to turmoil, ab [intra] is a journey through the intensity of human existence that will command your attention. The music fuses lush cello with ambient electronica and the exquisite dancers inhabit a visually arresting ethereal world. This is a ferociously physical and heartfelt piece which will stay with you long after you leave the theatre. The performance of ab [intra] and accompanying resource pack encourage students to dissect choreographic devices, performance quality, production elements and creative process. This can be used to enhance delivery of dance curriculum in appreciation and composition components, with the resource pack providing comprehensive behind-the-scenes insight and in-depth tasks to allow for continual analysis of the live performance experience. Workshops provide an opportunity for students to develop contemporary dance technique, learn Sydney Dance Company repertoire and explore choreographic and creative ideas through an industry-based lens. Workshops are delivered to complement curriculum outcomes for performance and composition elements.

National Tour 2022 Impermanence

A visceral and thrilling exploration of the juxtaposition of beauty and devastation, this full-length work is epic, driven performance that packs an emotional punch. Impermanence features a commissioned score full of emotional power from Grammy Award-winning composer Bryce Dessner, best known as a founder of American rock band The National and for his film scores for The Revenant and The Two Popes. Rafael Bonachela and Dessner were inspired by the tragedy of the Australian bush fires and the Notre-Dame fire in Paris to create this powerful, meaningful work. Experience the power of dance performed live, laden with meaning, fleeting and vulnerable and from devastation, find energy, urgency, radiance and hope. The performance of Impermanence and accompanying resource pack encourage students to dissect choreographic devices, performance quality, production elements and creative process. Together, they can be used to enhance delivery of dance curriculum in appreciation and composition components, with the resource pack providing comprehensive behind-thescenes insight and in-depth tasks to allow for continual analysis of the performance experience. Workshops provide an opportunity for students to develop contemporary dance technique, learn Sydney Dance Company repertoire and explore choreographic and creative ideas through an industry-based lens. Workshops are delivered to complement curriculum outcomes for performance and composition elements. Watch the film, Impermanence / Disintegration, a short dance film made in response to the creation and performance of Impermanence, exploring a dynamic, profoundly moving emotional response to the fleeting transience of life.

“arguably the single best piece created by and for an Australian dance company for many years” – Adelaide Advertiser

“Dance moves for the end of the world... Choreographer Rafael Bonachela sets his excellent dancers on a whirling, bounding trajectory…” – The Sydney Morning Herald

Sydney – November 2022 Resound

School Matinee performance, Roslyn Packer Theatre, Sydney: • Tuesday 3 November 2022, 12pm (secondary) Tracing an arc of emotions that moves from a dark turbulent interrogation of recent times through to a burgeoning buoyant optimism, Resound is a program of three unique dance works that will engage your heart and soul.

“thrilling, visceral... intensely theatrical” – Limelight on Ocho

Rafael Bonachela’s acclaimed work Ocho makes a welcome return to the stage as the first part of the evening. Featuring a driving score by Nick Wales, with the haunting vocals of Aboriginal artist Rrawun Maymuru and powerful set design by David Fleischer, Ocho won rave reviews from audiences and critics alike when it premiered in 2017. Set in a glass room, eight dancers search for salvation and connection, finding a salve for the troubles of the world. The second half of the program delivers two world premieres. Summer - Featuring the evocative score Cicadidae by Australian composer Kate Moore recorded by the Australian String Quartet, this new work by Rafael Bonachela captures the lightness of a world turning over a new leaf. The aural backdrop is the quintessential sound of summer and with costumes by the unmistakable masters of colour, Romance was Born, Summer will have your spirits soaring. A new work by Stephanie Lake is always a treat and Sydney Dance Company is thrilled to commission this important Australian dance artist to create a world premiere for the third piece in the Resound program. Lake’s new creation fuses movement, music and text, bringing blistering light to the stage and a fizzing glimpse of a haunted dreamscape. Poetic, fresh and forceful, this is intricate and dynamic dance that hits you in the solar plexus.

“I’ve really enjoyed Youth Ensemble over the last two years. It has been such a stimulating environment for me to develop my contemporary technique in, and I have loved cultivating friendships within a community of dancers like myself.” Youth Ensemble dancer, 2020 & 2021

“Thank you to Sydney Dance Company and the amazing line up of teachers in Youth Ensemble. My child has had such a wonderful experience. We love that Sydney Dance Company, though an amazing institution, is able to be so down to earth and humble in their approach to dancers and the younger generation coming through. Remarkable, truly valued and appreciated!” Youth Ensemble dancer parent, 2020-2021

Pre-Professional Year

Sydney Dance Company’s Pre-Professional Year provides a unique opportunity for aspiring professional dancers aged 18-24 to experience full-time training with Sydney Dance Company. Encompassing a wide spectrum of industry-based dance practices, the Pre-Professional Year dancers train as an ensemble and work with over 40 choreographers, teachers and company affiliates each year. The expansive and highly curated program offers a diverse range of practices and movement philosophies, forging a direct link to the global contemporary dance community. Dancers in the Pre-Professional Year work towards completing CUA60120 - Advanced Diploma of Professional Dance (Elite Performance) over two years, with the option to finish after one year with a CUA51520 - Diploma of Professional Dance (Elite Performance). These nationally recognised qualifications are delivered through an auspice arrangement with Australian Teachers of Dancing (RTO 31624).

“Approaching every day with a beginner’s mindset is a philosophy that has changed the way in which I learn and acquire knowledge. The exposure to various techniques, and the broad range of knowledge that I was able to experience have greatly impacted my perception of the way dance can comment on the world and how physical expression can carry such complex information.” Archie McLean, PPY20-21
