Meriton Festival Village 4
Smart global cities rely on creative thinkers to show new ways forward, and artists are at the centre of creative and cultural change. Artists are at the forefront of navigating diverse possibilities and creating new vocabularies with which to encounter a dynamic world. Sydney Festival prides itself on making change possible through interpreting disruption and prototyping responses. 2017 has seen many changes for Sydney Festival including a new Festival Director, updates to the Meriton Festival Village, announcing changes to The Domain offerings and bringing on a range of artists to act as change agents to the cultural landscape of our city. Inclusion and diversity were the backbone of the 2017 program which saw over 150 different activities across the greater Sydney area. These events united the city by inviting all its citizens to take part, exciting them with a range of world class arts and cultural offerings and igniting passionate discussion and debate. We expanded our free offerings through the city including the incredibly popular The Beach at the Cutaway, Barangaroo Reserve, introducing a free stage at the Meriton Festival Village, which pumped with 21 days of free live performance, and an expanded broad-ranging workshops and talks program that explored Aboriginal language, circus skills and the scents of Sydney.
The Indigenous program returned to Sydney Festival with a focus on telling stories of First Peoples. Circus City in Parramatta concentrated on circus skills and audiences that invited a broad range of participants. Sydney Festival continues to stretch throughout greater Sydney, building on relationships in Campbelltown, Parramatta and Blacktown as part of a Western Sydney strategy that will focus on accessing audiences and artists throughout the city. As time goes on there is only one irrefutable fact: change is inevitable. This being my first year at the helm, it has been wonderful to see that change rewarded and celebrated amongst the people of Sydney with fantastic ticket sales and attendances. The hardworking and talented Sydney Festival team and a huge array of artists helped make this Festival something special and distinctive. I am looking forward to consolidating new directions and introducing new changes going into 2018. Love,

TRANSFORMING SPACES You only had to see The Beach at the Cutaway, Barangaroo Reserve by Snarkitecture to witness the value of transforming spaces. This large installation is an incredible example of how Sydney Festival can capture the collective imagination of the city and the world. Transforming Hyde Park into the Meriton Festival Village was a huge success this year with the introduction of a free stage which pumped out 21 nights of free entertainment to hundreds of thousands of festivalgoers. We continued our presentation of Symphony Under the Stars and Opera in The Domain in addition to adding a new concert at The Crescent at Parramatta Parklands to the program. Circus City helped transform Prince Alfred Square with a big top and flying trapeze, which successfully focused this new offering and attracted audiences. This year Sydney Festival also presented shows in a car park, a church and under the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge. 2017 also saw the introduction of Thresholds which was a guerrilla activation of doorways which invited the city to walk through different locations each and every day.

Few things are more Australian than spending a day at the beach. So this summer Sydney Festival reimagined this experience with a giant monochromatic installation by New York artists Snarkitecture. 1.1 million balls formed a playful ocean. Vast mirrored walls extended the horizon and reflected crowds of families lounging under white umbrellas along the shoreline. Like the real beach, joyous laughter and excited shrieks from children created a raucous chorus that filled the vast interior of the Cutaway.

MULTIPLE VENUES Sydney Festival prides itself on delivering a range of indoor and outdoor activities throughout the wider Sydney area. In 2017 we were blessed with clear skies and temperate weather that encouraged more people to enjoy our city in summer. Working with our many and varied partners, this year you could find Sydney Festival in Blacktown, Parramatta, Campbelltown, and in venues including Sydney Opera House, Carriageworks, Seymour Centre, City Recital Hall, UTS, State Library of NSW, Art Gallery of NSW, Hyde Park, Barangaroo, Sydney Town Hall, National Art School, The Domain and UNSW Galleries. Partnerships are the key to growing and delivering greater diversity and a larger range of activities, and we greatly value the continued support of our venue partners, city councils, security and emergency services.

FREE & TICKETED EXPERIENCES Sydney Festival has always balanced free and ticketed programming to maximise the opportunity for residents and visitors to embrace our city in summer. This year we wanted to encourage the broadest possible audience, in the spirit of diversity and inclusion, from populist offerings like The Beach at the Cutaway, Barangaroo Reserve and Ladies in Black to specialist offerings such as Imagined Touch, Anthropologies Imaginaires, The Encounter and Scent of Sydney. The senses was a programming theme that promoted the idea of re-tuning the human body in a digital world. Free talks, language classes, circus workshops and exhibitions helped balance ticketed events. Free performances at Meriton Festival Village and elsewhere around Sydney helped establish Sydney Festival 2017 in the minds and hearts of people.

Briefs: The Second Coming
In addition to the specifically commissioned The Big Hair Show, which anchored the program, there were Orszaczky Budget Orchestra funk and soul nights and a celebration of David Bowie’s Let’s Dance. Weekends started with Roller Jam at the Archibald Fountain on Saturday afternoons, Soul of Sydney had everyone dancing at their Sunday sessions and Festival alumni Nick Power (Cypher, 2016) hosted Breaking Ground, a B*Girl & B*Boy battle.
Briefs: The Second Coming lead the Magic Mirrors Spiegeltent program with eye-popping boylesque, along with cabaret hits Retro Futurismus, Mother’s Ruin: A Cabaret About Gin and Covered. The live music program offered a thrilling and diverse showcase of musical cultures and genres from soaring vocalist Stanley Gawurra to hypnotic multi-instrumentalist Moses Sumney.

ENGAGING WITH GLOBAL ARTISTS The best of the world visits Sydney in January and this year was no exception. From musicians Ane Brun and Mdou Moctar through to Indonesian choreographer Eko Supriyanto, there was a wide range of international offerings to enjoy in 2017. Devotional and folk music from the Adriatic and Azerbaijan were showcased through the work of Dialogos, Kantaduri and Alim Qasimov Ensemble. Canada was also a focus country, honouring their 150th commemorations and opening the door to conversations on immigration, First Nations and artistic practice. We were proud to bring the work of Greek artist Dimitris Papaioannou (Still Life) to Australia for the first time, as well as the UK’s Gecko (Institute). Sydney Festival also continued relationships with Complicite (The Encounter), Cheek by Jowl and Pushkin Theatre (Measure for Measure), circus sensation Ockham’s Razor (Tipping Point) and the incomparable Nick Cave, who all returned with new works.

AUSTRALIAN STORIES In 2017 Sydney Festival had a strong focus on local stories and artists engaged in telling diverse stories in inclusive ways that built empathy and understanding. Prize Fighter, with its tale of a young refugee African boy soldier dealing with his history in Australia, Imagined Touch, featuring Deafblind artists Heather and Michelle, and Kaleidoscope, a circus show built around the talents of Ethan Hughes who lives with Aspergers Syndrome, are all examples of this diverse Australian storytelling. Scent of Sydney by Cat Jones also built connections between memory and the smells of Sydney.

Our increased presence in Western Sydney is a response to the growing populations and cultural demand. We worked with Campbelltown Arts Centre to help deliver Another Day in Paradise and Ich Nibber Dibber, both projects with clear connections to the area providing thought leadership around socially relevant topics. Urban Theatre Projects’ Home Country was performed in a Blacktown car park and told interlocking stories from three writers, plus Hakawati from National Theatre of Parramatta and Symphony Under the Stars in the Crescent joined Circus City as offerings in Parramatta.

Myuran Sukumaran – Another Day in Paradise
CIRCUS CITY The circus came to Parramatta in 2017 with the establishment of Circus City, a new Festival hub spanning Riverside Theatres and a temporary site in Prince Alfred Square (featuring a big top). The Circus City program included four productions, 22 free public workshops, 24 ticketed flying trapeze workshops, a broad program of circus films and talks, an exhibition of Australian circus artefacts and various curated events for circus professionals. The Circus Comes to Town!, a free event in Prince Alfred Square that launched the 10 day program, was attended by around 500 people who enjoyed music, circus workshops and a flying trapeze show. The headline show was Cirque Eloize’s iD, a high energy blend of circus and urban dance that came to us from Quebec, after playing to over one million people since its premiere. It was exclusive to Sydney Festival and played 13 performances at Riverside Theatres. The other productions were Tipping Point from UK-based Ockham’s Razor, the world premiere of Circa’s Humans (both of which played in the Spaghetti Circus Big Top in Prince Alfred Square) and Kaleidoscope from Company 2. Circus City reached 13,000 people in its inaugural year across free, ticketed and industry events.

NEW WORKS/NEW VOICES Sydney Festival supported numerous high profile commissions that were staged in 2017 including: Humans by Circa, the world premiere of Champions by Martin del Amo (with FORM Dance Projects), Biographica by Mary Finsterer and Tom Wright (created with Sydney Chamber Opera), Nude Live (a collaboration between Sydney Dance Company and the Art Gallery of NSW, in conjunction with the Nude exhibition from the Tate), You and Me and The Space Between by Terrapin Puppet Theatre (an MFI commission that has been touring the country) and Balabala by Ekosdance Company (presented as part of its world premiere season). Townsville’s Dancenorth presented their show Spectra, marking the first time the company has presented in Sydney in almost 30 years and Briefs Factory, with their new show Briefs: The Second Coming, were a welcome addition to our Speigeltent program.

Bayala was a centrepiece of the Festival, which also included Let’s Speak Sydney language classes, the installation Patyegarang’s Notebooks by Charles Madden and Lille Madden with Jonathan Jones and a morning ceremony song by Nardi Simpson and Jacinta Tobin sung by a choir on 26 January. Two works from Indigenous theatre company ILBIJERRI – Blood on the Dance Floor and Which Way Home – were crowd favourites as was the world premiere of The Season by Nathan Maynard. Senior artist Vernon Ah Kee’s largest ever solo exhibition Not an Animal or a Plant showed at the National Art School whilst other performing artists engaged with the Yellamundie National First Peoples Playwriting Festival. As a special highlight to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1967 referendum, 1967: Music in the Key of Yes was a sell-out success.

Accessibility for all audience members on all levels is vital to Sydney Festival, and in 2017 we sought to take our commitment to this further than ever before. Our original program brochure was produced in multiple formats including braille, audio CD and MP3, and our website offers a unique searchable ranking system to allow people with disability to easily determine which performances offer different forms of access. Visual content symbols were also used as a guide for people who are Deaf or hard of hearing, some circus workshops were designed specifically for people with disability and we collaborated with various artists with disability across theatre, circus, installations and talks. Accessible ticket pricing is also important to Sydney Festival, and a wide range of performances were available to audiences either free of charge or through discounted tickets.

Sydney Festival earns a significant portion of its revenue from the contribution of our partners across the private and public sector. Sydney Festival’s private and personal supporters play a vital role in the Festival, and their support is crucial to our ability to deliver the largest annual arts and culture festival in Australia. Our partners join us to fulfil a variety of objectives that vary from corporate social responsibility by giving back to the community they operate in, to engaging with our audience via tailored marketing campaigns and brand promotion, program alignments, on-site activations or B2B networking opportunities. Sydney Festival tailors each partnership to suit our partners’ business and marketing objectives.

GOVERNMENT AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS We would like to thank our two founding Partners, the State Government, through Arts NSW, and the City of Sydney, who continue to support Sydney Festival as the premier arts and culture festival in the country. The Festival has a strategic partnership with Destination NSW, the lead government agency for the New South Wales tourism and major events sector, to drive an interstate and international audience to Sydney during January. We further developed our partnership with Barangaroo Delivery Authority by presenting The Beach at the Cutaway, Barangaroo Reserve, which drew huge crowds with much media attention and was the highlight of our free program. The City of Parramatta Council continues to support the Festival in developing and presenting an arts and cultural program in Parramatta. This year we introduced Circus City, which we hope to expand over the next two years. UTS increased their commitment to the Festival as a Knowledge Partner. This involved Big Thinking Forums held onsite, digital promotion and programs as well as assisting with the Scent of Sydney and Bayala language program.

The Star Sydney celebrated four years as Principal Partner of Sydney Festival. The entertainment precinct was buzzing with Festival activity, including the Sky Terrace DJ Series, the artwork Glitterbox, the musical Ladies in Black at Sydney Lyric at The Star and inclusion of their fine dining restaurants in our Festival Feasts program, plus VIP hospitality at Symphony Under The Stars in The Domain. Meriton continued their support of one of our hub venues, Meriton Festival Village in Hyde Park that housed the Magic Mirrors Spiegeltent and the newly introduced free stage of programming presented by China Southern Airlines. Kirin and James Estate continued as our excusive beverage partners across beer, cider and wine. Special thanks to APN Outdoor, Adshel, ABC, Channel 9 and Foxtel Arts who play a vital role in relaying our program to Sydney and interstate audiences, and to all media partners across print, digital and broadcast platforms. FESTIVAL FEASTS Sydney Festival plays an important role in contributing to the economic prosperity of Sydney during January. We play an active role in the community and the ecosystem of business in Sydney by connecting our partners, developing business opportunities, introducing new audiences and driving sustainable growth. Now in its 17th year, the Festival Feasts restaurant program continues to be a successful initiative that directs new business to 27 partner restaurants across Sydney CBD, Eastern Sydney, Inner-West and Parramatta.

RECONCILIATION ACTION PLAN (RAP) Sydney Festival is now four years into its RAP journey. We remain committed to working towards improving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians by creating and fostering an organisational environment that cherishes respect, creates opportunity and builds cultural awareness. Over the past year, Sydney Festival has strengthened its governance and leadership teams with the appointment of two Aboriginal board members and the organisation’s first Aboriginal artist in the role of Festival Director. A partnership with Arts NSW helped fund a mid-career development role for an Aboriginal Programming Associate and the Festival continues to explore opportunities to improve access and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and arts workers. We look forward to developing our 2018 – 2020 RAP over the next 12 months and thank all the Elders, artists and advisors who have helped guide us on this journey.

Sydney Festival would not be possible without our army of dedicated and generous volunteers. Eventeamwork returned for a fifth year to manage the Festival’s volunteer program, which involved 156 volunteers working approximately 650 shifts from November through to the end of January. The program once again involved 16 team leaders supervising volunteers across various Festival venues including Carriageworks, Meriton Festival Village, the Cutaway at Barangaroo Reserve and Circus City (Parramatta). The team leader program provides a great opportunity for graduates or young professionals to build their leadership and organisational skills. Our enthusiastic volunteers embraced many roles on the ground and behind the scenes, from compiling materials for artists and staff to invigilating art installations and providing information and directions at venues.
ARTS INDUSTRY Sydney Festival is both a leader and a participant in a rich local and global cultural landscape. We foster connectivity and dialogue within the cultural sector and participate in networks and international conversations, both during the Festival and throughout the year. A key pillar of the Circus City program in 2017 was engagement with the Australian Circus community, so we appointed a Circus Advisory Group in May 2016 of seven professionals from across the country to consult on the range of industry events. In addition to providing a platform for discussion around key areas of interest to the sector in our Talking Circus series, we also offered a range of workshop opportunities: three paid workshops were attended by 32 professional artists from around Australia and four tailored workshops were offered for Sydney-based artists. Six Scent of Sydney forums were presented, exploring ideas generated by the work. The Festival partnered again with Critical Path to deliver three dance forums with practitioners speaking to current modes of practice. And for the second year, we partnered with UTS on delivery of two Big Thinking Forums, engaging artists and academics in dialogue around Indigenous culture and history. In 2017, the Sydney Festival Arts Industry Program continued, with 335 local artists and arts workers taking advantage of reduced price tickets and priority access to artist talks and other events.

INTERNS This year Sydney Festival hosted 14 internship placements across the company, offered to students attending NSW universities with placements dependent on each intern’s area of study. Placements offered experience as well as exposure to the administration and delivery of the Festival, and insight to strategic goals. Sydney Festival is the pre-eminent cultural event on the Sydney calendar. The Festival presents great art and unique experiences engaging Sydney-siders and visitors alike in a highly visible and accessible free program alongside a greatly valued ticketed program. The 2017 Sydney Festival was a resounding artistic and financial success. With Sydney turning on its finest summer weather, the Festival was celebrated by record number of attendances, with much of the program the ‘talk of’ Sydney over January. This success is only made possible through the support and partnerships of many and varied stakeholders. Thank you to our government partners the State Government supporting the Festival through Arts NSW, Destination NSW and the Barangaroo Delivery Authority, the City of Sydney and the City of Parramatta.
