A FANTASTICAL FAIRGROUND FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY. Welcome to a fairground like no other. Adults and children play together, twirling handles and spinning pedals to operate the whimsical fairground machines – including a hand-cranked Ferris wheel fitted out with toilet seats and a bicycle-powered carousel with a whirling crocodile and a rocket ship. DANCE

CYPHER AUSTRALIA

CHOREOGRAPHY BY NICK POWER Funky footwork, rocking rhythms, Cypher is a supple symphony of movement by four battle-hardened b*boys. A raw celebration of hip-hop culture, Cypher is your chance to share the space with ultra-skilful (not to mention ultra-competitive) dancers as they thrash it out, pushing the boundaries of movement in a dazzling blur of limbs and trainers. Australian hip-hop heavyweight and director Nick Power puts the crew through its motions while the booming beats of sound designer Jack Prest set a mean pace. If Cypher was any more in your face, it’d leave bruises.

STORYTELLING

FIRE BUCKET | AUSTRALIA

Uncle Wes Marne is a Bidgambul man. At the age of nine, the Government walked his family off tribal lands from the Stanthorpe Hills to Deadbird Mission, Ashford. The journey took three weeks. At 93, Uncle Wes is sharing his stories – of his grandfather’s dreaming, of bitterness and love, and of his life as an Elder living in Mt Druitt. Over the last year, his friend Alicia Talbot has been recording his stories as they visit Deadbird, retracing his extraordinary life and reconnecting the past with the present and future.

8

Now Uncle Wes invites you to gather with him and Alicia around the fire bucket to move backwards and forwards across time. No two nights will be the same. BACKYARDS IN CBD, REDFERN AND PARRAMATTA 8–10, 15–17, 22–24 January at 7.30pm General Admission $49

BY DAVID GREIG DIRECTED BY CLARE WATSON WITH CATHERINE McCLEMENTS AND SYDNEY COMMUNITY CHOIRS SET AND LIGHTING DESIGN BY GEOFF COBHAM The brilliant Catherine McClements is joined by local community choirs in an extraordinary fusion of theatre and music. Claire is a minister and the director of a choir that meets regularly in the local hall, made up of all sorts: the lonely, outsiders and the privileged. She has built a community, but in the aftermath of a

terrible act of violence, this community and the ideals that formed it are blown apart. Subtle and mesmerising, The Events reveals the incredibly human reactions to trauma, asking the question: how do we live together knowing it can all come apart in a moment? Are you ready for some seriously golden, breezy West Coast vibes? Enter, on a keytar-shaped sunbeam, Pasadena’s maverick funk hero, DaM-FunK, who earned his chops as a sought-after player for G-Funk hiphop artists in the 90s before deciding to go ‘full-funk’ and plough his own, extremely cool furrow. His joyous 2015 sophomore album, Invite the Light, features such free-thinking like minds as Ariel Pink, Q-Tip and Snoop Dogg.
