God’s away on business. Woyzeck loves Marie, but what can he offer her? A simple soldier on the fringes of society, he sacrifices his body and sanity to an arrogant doctor’s medical experiments. When a drum major catches Marie’s eye, it all becomes too much for Woyzeck. American musician Tom Waits, working with Kathleen Brennan and acclaimed theatre director Robert Wilson, has reinvented Georg Büchner’s raw and unforgiving Woyzeck as a 21st century musical. Two worlds are created: one of the poor German underclass speaking gutsy pre-Brechtian German; another of introspection through Waits’

English songs, giving new dimension to the characters. The illustrious Thalia Theater Hamburg is magnetic in this refined and refreshingly transparent adaptation by the young director Jette Steckel. Woyzeck is something between a fever dream and social drama, a lurid performance dealing with madness, obsession and murder. “A STUNNING IMAGE OF DARING WITHIN ORDER AND TURBULENCE WITHIN CALM” VILLAGE VOICE

A seminal piece in the evolution of contemporary dance, Fase was first staged by acclaimed choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker in 1982. Set to four pieces by American composer Steve Reich and danced by De Keersmaeker FASE

herself, it has cast its spell over generations of audiences. A profound interplay between minimalist music and movement, bodies and light, it artfully combines delicacy and chaos, simplicity and complexity. CLASSICAL MUSIC

At last, orchestra Anima Eterna Brugge – one of Europe’s leading specialists of historically informed performance – will allow Sydney the opportunity to hear Beethoven’s monumental symphonies the way they were meant to be heard. Australia’s first ever Beethoven symphonic marathon on period instruments will take place over four exquisite nights at the City Recital Hall, with Beethoven’s exuberant Ninth raising the roof of the Sydney Opera House as a grand finale. Sydney’s own Australian Brandenburg Choir will join them in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. From the elegant opening notes to the triumphant climax, Beethoven’s symphonies broke ground and changed the face of symphonic music forever. A long overdue honouring of a magnificent work of art, Anima Eterna Brugge Beethoven’s Symphonies has all the ingredients in place for a transcendent concert experience.

“ONE OF THE MOST COMPELLING AND INSIGHTFUL PERFORMANCES OF WINTERREISE I HAVE EVER HEARD” NEW YORK TIMES Following the late-night path of a despondent lover, Schubert’s song cycle Winterreise is a musical journey into the heart of darkness. Now, Schubert’s wanderer passes into a new dimension, meeting the stormy line-work and charcoal animation of South African artist William Kentridge. The rabbits came many grandparents ago. They built houses, made roads, had children. They cut down trees. A whole continent of rabbits… John Marsden and Shaun Tan’s haunting picture book is adapted in this Helpmann Award-winning opera for children and families. A deeply moving story of hope amidst colonisation, The Rabbits sparks imaginations of the young and old, inviting us all to question modern society and our role in its future. A video installation that enthralled attendees of the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale, The Column traces the epic journey of an immense length of marble, extracted from the ground and taken to sea. A true luminary in modern jazz, drummer and composer Antonio Sanchez performs his fervent score live alongside the Oscar-winning movie Birdman. The hot sauce in this already super-cool premise? Sanchez’s performance will be largely improvised, just as it was for the film. Birdman follows the progress of a washed-up actor (Michael Keaton) trying to re-establish his career and his sanity. The solo drum soundtrack by the fourtime Grammy Award-winning jazz musician is an essential part of its set-to-stun impact. This is a golden opportunity to see celebrated musician Sanchez in his element, and of course, it’s really the only way to capture the frenetic, buzzing energy of Birdman. At first glance, the association might seem surprising: songs from a place Morrissey himself bewails as “silent and grey” being sung by musicians from one of the world’s most famously vibrant countries. But actually, Moz’s ardent Mexican fanbase is a force to be reckoned with, and when you consider the drama, romance and poetry inherent in The Smiths’ outsider anthems, it makes perfect sense.

CELEBRATE NEW YORK CITY LUMINARY ARTHUR RUSSELL AT A RARE PERFORMANCE OF HIS PIONEERING 1975 MASTERWORK. Arthur Russell’s Instrumentals sound as gorgeously crisp, playful and unhurried as in their first performance over 40 years ago. Such is the genius of the late Arthur Russell, beloved Iowa-born musical polymath and downtown New York City icon whose life’s work has informed such dynamos as David Byrne, James Murphy and Sufjan Stevens. Inspired by the nature photography of his Buddhist teacher Yuko ARTHUR RUSSELL’S INSTRUMENTALS Nonomura, Instrumentals broke

new ground in minimalism by pairing concert hall aesthetics with pop; the reissued recorded version, First Thought, Best Thought, was heralded as a masterpiece by Pitchfork. Remarkably, this restaging of the original 1975 concert features the same core ensemble – including long-term collaborators Peter Gordon and Ernie Brooks, plus the composer Rhys Chatham. ST STEPHEN’S SUNDAY FOLK

QUIET MUSIC FOR CURIOUS EARS

MUSIC

Folk music, simply, is music of the people. It is deeply rooted in tradition, and at the same time is constantly growing. American folk has its roots in European ballads and African blues, and its influence has run wild, blossoming into every strand of modern music. In this spirit, we present three distinct branches of new folk music over the course of consecutive summer Sundays in the sublime architecture and rich acoustics of St Stephen’s Uniting Church. Mirel Wagner, a Finnish singer, trades in Appalachian murder ballads, preceded by Nadia Reid’s soaring torch balladry; Sir Richard Bishop and Daniel Bachman play twinkling American Primitive guitar instrumentals; and treasured American outsider folk veteran Michael Hurley appears with modern freak-folk torchbearer Meg Baird. These special performances close in time for you to catch the sun setting while walking to the Festival Village for evening entertainment. With her gorgeous, minimalist folk songs, Finnish singer-songwriter Mirel Wagner creates a world that’s darkly inviting. Drawing on the Appalachian murder ballad tradition and haunting early Delta blues, Wagner is a storyteller like no other, accompanying her rich, velvet voice with delicate acoustic fingerpicking. It’s little wonder she won the coveted 2015 Nordic Music Prize for her latest album, When the Cellar Children See the Light of Day. Fans of Michael Gira and Nick Cave will find much to love in Wagner’s spellbinding performances. Opening the show, New Zealand songwriter Nadia Reid has a voice of exquisite, pure beauty. AMERICAN PRIMITIVE

SIR RICHARD BISHOP & DANIEL BACHMAN USA

| AUSTRALIAN EXCLUSIVE

USA

Founded in the late 50s by John Fahey, the American Primitive guitar style uses traditional fingerpicking techniques to weave together folk, country, blues, raga, rock, ragtime, drone, bluegrass and psych into web-like instrumentals. Sir Richard Bishop’s music draws on traditional lineages from Moroccan and classical Indian, to flamenco and Appalachian. Bishop will perform on the 1890s parlour guitar, the warm tone of which radiates across his recent Drag City release, Tangier Sessions.

Photo: Uwe Faltermeier (left), Sarah Taft (right)

MICHAEL HURLEY & MEG BAIRD

Opening the show North Carolina whippersnapper Daniel Bachman draws on similar styles, even weaving in Civil War ballads. As NPR puts it, the newly revived American Primitive style is “evocative of a landscape that doesn’t know its boundaries”. 17 January at 6.30pm Doors at 6pm

Two truly authentic folk talents share a unique bill. Veteran folk hero Michael Hurley is one of American music’s true originals. Hurley got his start during the 60s Greenwich Village folk boom. An outsider right from the start, Hurley has always forged his own itinerant path. His songs are often funny, melancholic, and always touching, whether he’s playing a well-loved favourite or a number from his latest Mississippi Records release, Land of LoFi. A founding member of the band Espers, Meg Baird was a key part of the so-called freak-folk movement of the early naughts. Her work as a solo artist gives her beautiful voice and guitar playing breathing space, offering luminescent, feathery songs which truly dazzle live. 24 January at 6.30pm Doors at 6pm sydneyfestival.org.au/hurleybaird

CHRISTOPHER BRETT BAILEY

Photo: Jemima Yong

“REALLY SHOCKS OR TRANSFORMS YOU… ACHINGLY HIP AND FRIGHTENINGLY SAVAGE” THE GUARDIAN Christopher Brett Bailey’s stream of consciousness is more like a river rapids ride, with the everpresent danger of being thrown overboard. A motor-mouthed collage of spoken word and storytelling, This Is How We Die traverses tales of paranoia, young love and ultra-violence. With echoes of Lenny Bruce, William Burroughs, beat poetry and B-movies, This Is How We Die is a prime slice of surrealist

trash, an Americana death trip and a dizzying exorcism for a world convinced it’s dying. From Bailey’s desk comes a spiralling odyssey of pitch-black humour and nightmarish prose.

GOD DIES. MUSIC LIVES. AN INVENTORY OF NIETZSCHEAN PASSIONS.

O MENSCH

Restoring the voice to one of the mightiest minds in history, O Mensch! transforms 21 remarkable poems by Friedrich Nietzsche into a series of inspired musical declarations by French composer Pascal Dusapin. In this virtuoso piece for baritone and piano, audiences are plunged into the agonies and the ecstasies of this era-defining genius, as fierce ideology collides with high emotion.

An intimate production directed by Sarah Giles and lit by lighting installation artist Katie Sfetkidis, O Mensch! features the indomitable baritone Mitchell Riley, who appeared in Sydney Chamber Opera’s ...pas à pas - nulle part... for the 2014 Sydney Festival. Be sure to also see Sydney Chamber Opera in Dusapin’s Passion at City Recital Hall on 14 and 15 January, see p14.

Meow Meow’s Little Mermaid is a decidedly un-Disney cabaret – sexy spectacle drips into a bittersweet take on what constitutes a ‘Happy Ending’. Join post-postmodern diva Meow Meow as she raucously subverts Hans Christian Andersen’s mermaid tale of teen self-sacrifice, salvation and seduction.

A world of old sea shanties and hymns from the Titanic will give way to a glittering array of contemporary originals, as she sails to a land of altered hearts, minds and body parts. In part two of the ‘Little’ trilogy that began with Meow Meow’s Little Match Girl in 2011, the cat is back, and she’s not afraid to go into the water! This operatic and outrageous sea ride is a fairy tale gone rogue.

Suffice to say, The Weather Station live experience is nothing short of transformative.

NEW ZEALAND

ETHIOPIA/AUSTRALIA

Shivers are guaranteed when Martin Phillipps’ massively influential New Zealand indie-pop outfit The Chills take the stage to celebrate Silver Bullets – the band’s first album in nearly 20 years. As torchbearers for storied NZ label Flying Nun, The Chills epitomise the Dunedin Sound, a magical, lo-fi fusion of 60s psychedelia, punk and jangle-pop. Phillipps has been dubbed ‘the Brian Wilson of post-punk’ by Creation Records icon Alan McGee, a comparison which acknowledges both Phillipps’ musical gifts and the fact he’s wrestled with his share of demons over the years. As their reunion shows have proved, The Chills offer singularly intense, give-it-all live shows.

When Ethiopian legend Hailu Mergia joins forces with double bassist Mike Majkowski and drummer Tony Buck (The Necks), resistance to their mighty grooves is futile. While Mergia was a crucial part of Ethiopia’s trailblazing Walias Band in the 1970s, his move to the United States found him driving a taxi for the next two decades.

“THE CHILLS INVENTED THEIR OWN TRENDS TO REINVENT POP MUSIC” THE GUARDIAN

However, he cut one album in 1985, Hailu Mergia and His Classical Instrument, an extraordinary fusion of home-grown motifs with synth sounds reminiscent of Kraftwerk. Awesome Tapes from Africa got hold of the cassette in Ethiopia, reissued it in 2013, and Mergia’s star is back in the ascendant.

Born as a holiday project for members of The Triffids, Martha’s Vineyard and Chad’s Tree in 1989, The Blackeyed Susans have grown into a beloved Australian institution whose ever-rotating line-up has featured members of The Bad Seeds, The Cruel Sea and Dirty Three.

Experimental Norwegian singer-songwriter Jenny Hval fearlessly explores notions of gender, sexuality, feminism, vulnerability and danger in her songs, in a potent blend of delicate and dreamy, disturbing and dissonant.

This one-off performance celebrates the Susans’ rich career – over 25 years and counting – which has seen the band playing its dark, country-tinged songs on tour with such greats as Johnny Cash and Leonard Cohen. A string quartet join The Blackeyed Susans in honour of this special occasion.

OUTERNATIONAL! DEADLY DRAGON SOUNDSYSTEM FT. SCREECHY DAN & LORD ECHO

USA

JAMAICA/USA/NEW ZEALAND

It’s one thing to play flawless, crisp jazz-folk songs in the vein of late 60s era Tim Buckley and Van Morrison – but quite another to imbue them with the fire, spirit and youth that’s such a natural part of Ryley Walker’s performance. The rising Chicago troubadour’s latest album, Primrose Green, has a freewheeling ease that’s a result of Walker’s band comprising the city’s most brilliant jazz musicians – who also happen to be his best friends. His live shows take the sweet lustre of his records and transform them into mesmeric, groovy wig-outs. Bask in the heady, psychedelic glory.

Jamaican-born New York MC and singer Screechy Dan is legendary for uniting musical cousins reggae and hip-hop, and performing alongside the likes of Shaggy. He’s backed by selector Scratch Famous of the Deadly Dragon Soundsystem. Co-starring in this planetary meltdown is Lord Echo from New Zealand – a genre-hopping reggae-disco-Afrosoul dance master – and his soundsystem. Starting the party right, vinyl-slinger Raul Panui links tropical hotspots in a border-crossing frenzy of fun.

AUSTRALIA Given the history of The Apartments’ latest album, No Song, No Spell, No Madrigal – the group’s first in 18 years – it’s a miracle it exists at all. Having briefly joined The Go-Betweens in the late 70s, Peter Milton Walsh returned to The Apartments, releasing their beloved debut on Rough Trade in 1985, followed by a string of albums in the 90s. But tragedy struck and Walsh walked away from music following the death of his young son in 1999. Only in 2013 did he feel ready to record the songs he’d been writing in secret for over a decade. Don’t miss this special opportunity to see this unique Australian band live.

Blast off and rock out with The Cambodian Space Project in Cosmic Cambodia; a high-energy, sci-fi psych rock’n’roll take on a Phnom Penh karaoke bar.

Los Angeles duo Girlpool make a whole lotta noise with little more than guitar, bass and aching vocals. Bassist Harmony Tividad and guitarist Cleo Tucker combine for raw, bluesy punk sounds that require no percussion, thanks to their candid lyrics and pure guts. Drawing on influences from early Bright Eyes to 50s beat poetry, the band accentuate their bare bones instrumentation with brutally honest songs. The pair are leading a quiet rebellion without drums that champions vulnerability; they’re opening the pages of their diaries and inviting fans inside.

Singer Channthy Kak and musician Julien Poulson (featured in 2015 doco The Cambodian Space Project – Not Easy Rock ’n’ Roll), along with their uber cool band, sing back to life the lost divas and rock legends of Cambodia’s golden age of rock’n’roll, all but wiped out by the Khmer Rouge regime. Mashing tradition with rock, groove, soul and trippy visuals, they reimagine Khmer classics alongside originals. Get your dancing shoes on and get down with this astonishing revival.

CAMBODIA/AUSTRALIA

Are you ready for some seriously golden, breezy West Coast vibes? Enter, on a keytar-shaped sunbeam, Pasadena’s maverick funk hero, DaM-FunK, who earned his chops as a soughtafter player for G-Funk hip-hop artists in the 90s before deciding to go ‘full-funk’ and plough his own, extremely cool furrow. His joyous sophomore album, 2015’s Invite the Light, features such free-thinking like minds as Ariel Pink, Q-Tip and Snoop Dogg.

Matthew E. White’s luscious country soul sound is irresistible. On record, the Virginia songman matches his velvet croon to rock’n’roll, gospel and soul stylings to swoonsome effect. Live at the Lennox, White’s incredibly tight quartet will perform his songs with hip-shaking grooves and fiery sensuality. Ecstatic crowd singalongs are a big part of the experience.

RECONCILIATION ACTION PLAN (RAP)

SUSTAINABILITY

THE DOMAIN

We have a vision to be the most sustainable major performing arts festival in Australia.

Having successfully launched and implemented our first Reconciliation Action Plan back in 2013, we are pleased to have followed up with our second RAP in 2015. We set ourselves specific goals in 2013/14 and we are pleased to report the vast majority were achieved, but there is still so much more we can do. We’ve learnt a lot in the first 12 month period, and both our successes and mistakes informed our strategy for the next stage of our plan.

For some years we have been working towards making Sydney Festival a more sustainable event.

SUMMER SOUNDS, SYMPHONY & OPERA IN THE DOMAIN Patrons are reminded of the following guidelines: • no pegging into the ground or reserving of unattended areas • no highchairs or beach umbrellas • no plastic sheeting or ice on the grass as it kills the lawns • concerts in The Domain are Waste Wise Events, so please recycle using the waste system provided and help save our environment

The Sydney Festival Reconciliation Action Plan remains our organisation’s commitment to ensure that we keep moving forward on this vital issue for our nation. We are committed to working towards improving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians by creating and fostering an organisational environment that cherishes respect, creates opportunity and builds cultural awareness. We have set ourselves new measurable goals, at the same time as maintaining ongoing successful initiatives and we look forward to the successes of this plan as part of the ongoing journey for this organisation and our community. Find out more at sydneyfestival.org.au/RAP

We have made a commitment towards fully understanding our impact and identifying ways to minimise the negative and maximise the positive environmental, social and economic legacies of Sydney Festival. Meeting our vision With annual audiences in excess of 500,000, the impact of resource consumption waste creation, transportation and greenhouse gas emissions is considerable. In collaboration with our artists, venues, suppliers, staff, crew, volunteers and, importantly, with our audience we can meaningfully reduce our resource consumption and waste creation, so that together we meet our vision for a truly sustainable Sydney Festival. We will be enlisting your help to reduce our impact because we believe that together we can make a difference. The Sydney Festival brochure is printed on PEFC certified paper. The paper is certified under the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification scheme (PEFC) which assures consumers that the utilised forestry products can be traced from a certified, responsibly managed forest through all stages of processing and production by a chain of custody process.

SUMMER SOUNDS IN THE DOMAIN: THE FLAMING LIPS Patrons are advised of the following guidelines: • this is an all ages, standing event • licensed venue. No BYO food or drinks. Food and drinks available for purchase • limited capacity, arrive early to avoid disappointment. Gates open at 5pm • bags and IDs will be checked at all entries SYMPHONY IN THE DOMAIN • It’s our ruby anniversary! Prizes will be awarded for the best dressed ruby picnic and punter

Flanders Fields. A place to remember. The Battle of Passchendaele was the only battle that William, George and Theo Seabrook would ever fight. Twenty-four hours after the start of the battle, the three Australian brothers had all fallen. Flanders Fields has countless tales to tell. Come and discover them for yourself. facebook.com/flandersfields1418

THE CUTAWAY

A HUGE NEW SPACE FOR SYDNEY TO PLAY IN

To be offered a creative space of this scale is a rare gift. The spectacular proportions of the Cutaway require a monumental artwork. And to achieve this I invite every Sydneysider to come to the Cutaway and help me build this installation. Join me this January in Sydney’s newest, biggest and most exciting cultural space – and we’ll make something magnificent together. OLIVIER GROSSETÊTE
