SYDNEY FRINGE FESTIVAL 2024
KERRI GLASSCOCK
Festival Director and CEO
Our festival is unique in that it is created by our artists for our audiences, we simply provide the structure and support to make their vision happen. And what a vision it is this year!
For the first time we have shaped the program around four key precinct areas to make navigating the 400+ shows easier for you, and to ensure that there is ample fringe fun right across the city. We’ve added a second Festival Garden, increased the amount of Festival Hubs and found interesting spaces in interesting places for fantastic experiences. Over half of our program are premiere works and a huge percentage by emerging and early career artists. Sydney Fringe Festival is THE place to see new Australian work by new Australian voices.
It is the time of the year where our sector, our audiences and our city unite with an intention to celebrate our local creative industries, discover new venues and places, and take a chance on an unexpected delight. So grab a few friends, pick a couple of shows and be prepared to be swept up in an explosion of unexpected.
MAREE TAYLOR
Chair, Sydney Fringe
A very warm welcome to the 2024 Sydney Fringe Festival. We are absolutely delighted to be bringing Sydney our 15th festival this year. What started as a small community arts festival in the Inner West of Sydney has now grown into the largest independent arts festival in NSW and we couldn’t be prouder. The team have been working tirelessly with community and the sector over the past year to provide a supportive platform for over 400 local and visiting productions to present their work. We have no doubt that you will find something extraordinary to see, visit or take part in this September. And with many affordable and free events, we invite all Sydney audiences to join us for a unique fringe experience!
There is no shortage of choice. With over 2000 artists participating, two festival gardens, eleven festival hubs, kids and family programming, major events and plenty of hidden gems, there truly is something for everyone.
I’d like to thank our many partners for their continued support and wish everyone a wonderful Sydney Fringe Festival 2024.
HON JOHN GRAHAM
Special Minister of State, Minister for Roads, Minister for the Arts, Minister for Music and the Night-time Economy, and Minister for Jobs and Tourism NSW
Community and creativity are at the core of Sydney Fringe Festival. 15 years ago, a group of inner west venues got together and started the Fringe born of a need to promote the independent art sector of Sydney to new audiences. From that first year it has grown to Sydney’s largest independent arts festival. Now, each September, Sydney hosts hundreds of premieres of extraordinary, vibrant, diverse, unfiltered and exciting performances. Along the way, audiences go on adventures to known and unknown venues across Greater Sydney.
I encourage you to take up the Sydney Fringe Festival’s generous offer and dive into the program, and to experience all the fun, weird, profound, and playful performances on offer.
HON TONY BURKE
Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, Minister for the Arts, Leader of the House
Welcome to the 15th Sydney Fringe Festival - New South Wales’ largest independent arts festival.
This year’s festival will support the work of local artists to share their stories in new and innovative ways. Over half of its productions represent new Australian works and 80 percent of featured artists are based in New South Wales. This year’s festival is expected to generate a much needed twomillion dollars in revenue back to artists to ensure their important work can continue.
Ensuring that there’s a place for every story and a story for every place is crucial. This is why it’s the centrepiece of Revive- our National Cultural Policy. Australia has an incredible diversity of voices and experiences and our storytellers play a vital role in helping us to know ourselves, understand each other and see the world differently.
This storytelling element is at the core of what this festival does, and it enforces a creative and resilient spirit that all Australians can celebrate. It’s a festival that has its roots in supporting artists, who weren’t traditionally invited to the table, to put on their independent gigs. Whether you’re a fan of music, poetry, storytelling, or acrobatics, and everything else in between, this festival has something for you.
I hope you enjoy immersing yourself in the this remarkable event.
LORD MAYOR CLOVER MOORE AO
Lord Mayor City of Sydney
Welcome to the 15th Sydney Fringe Festival!
Culture is crucial to a creative, international city, and the City of Sydney is a proud supporter of the Sydney Fringe Festival, providing $285,000 in sponsorship this year. This festival is a launching pad for many first-time artists and provides colour and delight to our streets and theatres as performances activate new and surprising spaces. This year the Sydney Fringe will travel to 29 postcode areas, feature 400+ productions and more than 2000 artists!
I want to congratulate Kerri Glasscock and the team on yet another outstanding Festival program – Sydney Fringe is the biggest independent arts festival in NSW, and that takes a lot of talent, long days, nights, and hard work behind-the-scenes.
The Fringe plays an important role in Sydney's creative sector, and I hope you’re delighted, entertained, and challenged as you enjoy your Sydney Fringe experience!
RUTH CALLAGHAN
Acting General Manager, Inner West Council
We are proud to be a sponsor of the Sydney Fringe Festival and excited that the Sydney Fringe partners with Inner West Council to showcase our creative community. We are delighted to continue to host the Sydney Fringe offices within Marrickville Town Hall and see Fringe as an important player in our cultural sector.
Creativity and culture are at the heart of the Inner West, with four times the greater Sydney average of residents employed as creative artists, musicians, writers and performers. We encourage you to immerse yourselves in the 2024 program and all that the artists have to offer. We wish you all a successful and spectacular festival and look forward to many more in the years to come.
