2020 Learning & Engagement Program for Schools

Music For Everyone We believe that music is to be shared, in the classroom, in the community, across the country. We have shared music with hundreds of thousands of students and will continue to share it with generations to come.

For 2020 we have crafted an exciting program that includes improvements and new opportunities. We are recommending concerts drawn from our major series where the repertoire serves the music education syllabus. Schools can now access more daytime performances, providing a greater range of experiences. We’ve also expanded the number of events available at discounted school and student prices, giving you more to choose from as you curate a series of concerts to match your teaching program. Many of our performances in 2020 will take place at the Sydney Town Hall while the Concert Hall undergoes refurbishment. The Town Hall is one of the world’s great acoustic venues, a space where you and your students can experience the Sydney Symphony as you’ve rarely heard us before. We hope you will share the new Sydney Symphony experience with your students this year. We’re here to assist you in making the most of our educational resources and we are grateful to the many teachers and students who have provided feedback and suggestions in shaping our 2020 program. – Musicians of the Sydney Symphony

We’re moving to the Town Hall

In 2020, the largest ever acoustic and access improvement program will commence at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall. As a consequence, we’re making the Sydney Town Hall our main venue for the next two years. As one of the world’s great acoustic venues the Town Hall provides a sound experience that is balanced, pure and rich – bringing students even closer to the music. The Town Hall’s central CBD location provides even more public transport options. The Town Hall is served by Town Hall Railway Station, Queen Victoria Building bus interchange, with bus services in all directions, as well as the new CBD and South East Light Rail.

WAGNER Die Meistersinger – Prelude STRAVINSKY The Rite of Spring*

RAVEL Piano Concerto in G* MENDELSSOHN The Hebrides DEBUSSY La mer

Pietari Inkinen conductor Wagner’s warm, expansive prelude introduces his only comedy. Stravinsky’s ballet caused a riot at its premiere, and it’s easy to hear why. After 100 years, its unprecedented musical violence is still shocking and completely electrifying. Calling for a gargantuan orchestra, The Rite is one of the great experiences of music. Key Elective Topics: Music 1900–1945 19th Century Music

Jun Märkl conductor Alexandra Dariescu piano From the very first bar, Mendelssohn puts us out on the rolling, grey-green ocean. Sunlight glints and sinks into the depths: gulls wheel overhead; lonely islands stand on the horizon. Debussy’s sea is different, a more sunlit, more glittering view of the wind and the smack of salt spray. Key Elective Topics: Music 1900–1945 19th Century Music Limited Availability

Vladimir Ashkenazy

Alexander Shelley

Scheherazade

Northern Lights Festival Program 1

Term 1, Week 7 7pm – 8pm Wed 11 & Thu 12 March

Term 2, Week 4 1.30pm – 3.10pm Thu 21 May

Sydney Town Hall

Alexander Shelley conductor Debussy’s little masterpiece is languid, ecstatic music of a summer afternoon lying in the grass. It’s also quietly revolutionary. Modern music began here. In Rimsky-Korsakov’s fabulous orchestral showpiece, the Tales of 1001 Nights are spun by our concertmaster, Andrew Haveron, who performs some of the most spectacular solos in the repertoire. Key Elective Topics: Music 1900 - 1945 19th Century Music

David Stern

DEBUSSY Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun* RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Scheherazade

Handel and Telemann Term 1, Week 10 7pm – 8pm Wed 1 & Thu 2 April City Recital Hall HANDEL Water Music – selections* TELEMANN Water Music – selections HANDEL Music for the Royal Fireworks David Stern conductor Handel’s ebullient suites were written for the outdoors: a royal boating party on the Thames, and a huge firework display for a grand celebration. His contemporary, Telemann, is less famous, but this isn’t very fair: if you don’t know the ‘other’ Water Music, you have an exciting discovery in store. Key Elective Topic: Baroque

10

Sydney Town Hall Vladimir Ashkenazy conductor GRIEG Peer Gynt Suite No.1* GRIEG Peer Gynt Suite No.2* SIBELIUS Symphony No.5 With the tranquillity of Morning, and the terrifying Mountain King, Grieg’s music has far outlasted the play for which it was written. Sibelius conceived the crowning theme of his heroic Fifth Symphony when he saw swans flying above the forests. Yet it emerges organically, as if it had always been in the music. Key Elective Topics: Music 1900 – 1945 19th Century Music Limited Availability

Simone Young

Simone Young Conducts Beethoven

Term 2, Week 5 1.30pm – 3.30pm Thu 28 May

Term 3, Week 2 1.30pm - 3.10pm Thu 30 July Benjamin Bayl

Northern Lights Festival Program 2

Sydney Town Hall SIBELIUS Karelia Suite SIBELIUS Violin Concerto* SIBELIUS Symphony No.1 Vladimir Ashkenazy conductor Akiko Suwanai violin Sibelius wrote excitedly to his wife that he had ‘a marvellous opening idea’. And he had: with the soloist’s quiet, intense entry over murmuring strings, the beginning is heart-stopping. The piece not only requires a supreme virtuoso like Akiko Suwanai, but is a tautly argued musical structure. Key Elective Topic: Music 1900 - 1945 Limited Availability

Rebel, Gabrieli, Vivaldi Term 2, Week 7 7pm – 8.10pm Wed 10 & Thu 11 June City Recital Hall MONTEVERDI L’Orfeo – Sinfonia VIVALDI Concerto for four violins* GABRIELI Canzona for Brass and Strings CORELLI Concerto Grosso No.4 REBEL Les élémens Benjamin Bayl conductor Benjamin Bayl, the first Australian organ scholar at King’s College Cambridge, returns to his hometown with music he has made his own. In a program spanning the high Baroque, Corelli’s buoyant concerto stands out. Its soloists will be members of the Orchestra, making this a real family affair.

Sydney Town Hall BEETHOVEN (arr. Dean) String Quartet Op.59, No.1 – Adagio DEAN Testament* BEETHOVEN Symphony No.7 Simone Young conductor Beethoven never heard his Seventh Symphony: when he composed it, he was deaf. Brett Dean’s Testament explores this tragedy from Beethoven’s perspective, with wisps of music flickering in and out as we try to grasp them. The Seventh itself, though, is joyous, life-affirming music, driven by the power of rhythm. Mozart & Beethoven

MOZART Adagio and Fugue in C minor BEETHOVEN Romances No.1 and No.2 MOZART Symphony No.40* Henning Kraggerud violindirector Beethoven’s charming Romances are some of his most carefree music, with Henning Kraggerud lovingly caressing gentle, fresh melodies. Mozart’s penultimate symphony is in G minor, his personal ‘tragic’ key. It’s one of his most introspective and troubled works, but the music is always shot through with wistful lightness and grace. Key Elective Topic: Classical

Brahms Symphony No.4 Term 3, Week 8 7pm – 8.10pm Wed 9 & Thu 10 September Sydney Town Hall BEETHOVEN Leonore Overture No.3 BRAHMS Symphony No.4* Simone Young conductor Brahms saw the symphony as the pinnacle of musical thought. His final symphony is a towering summation of his life’s work, and of his place in history. Brahms pays homage to the great composers in whose footsteps he followed, in burnished music of profound depth and autumnal richness. Key Elective Topics: 19th Century Music Classical

12

TCHAIKOVSKY The Tempest RAVEL Une barque sur l’océan DVOŘÁK Cello Concerto* Fabien Gabel conductor Daniel Müller-Schott cello Its big tunes and electric energy have secured it a place in the hearts of audiences and artists everywhere. In the moments of wistful sadness that interrupt the celebratory finales are hints that the concerto is a tribute to Dvořák’s youthful lost love. Key Elective Topics: 19th Century Music Music 1900 - 1945 Limited Availability

Donald Runnicles

Miguel Harth-Bedoya

Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.2

Mahler Symphony No.4 Term 4, Week 5 7pm – 8pm Wed 11 November

Term 4, Week 1 1.30pm – 3.30pm Thu 15 October

Sydney Town Hall

BARBER The School for Scandal – Overture RACHMANINOV Piano Concerto No.2* PROKOFIEV Cinderella – Suite Miguel Harth-Bedoya conductor Alexander Gavrylyuk piano The Ukrainian-Australian pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk is perfectly matched to Rachmaninov’s concerto, whose soloist must have fingers of steel and a romantic heart. A romantic heart too for Prokofiev, from whom the familiar fairytale drew some of his most imaginative and affecting music. Barber’s witty overture provides a perfect aperitif. Key Elective Topic: Music 1900 - 1945 Limited Availability

Ingrid Fliter

Sydney Town Hall

Mozart and Tchaikovsky Term 4, Week 4 1.30pm – 3.30pm Thu 5 November Sydney Town Hall ADÈS Three Studies from Couperin MOZART Piano Concerto No.23, K.488 TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No.6, Pathétique*

MAHLER Symphony No.4* Donald Runnicles conductor Jacqueline Porter soprano This wonderful piece is one of Mahler’s most unusual and fantastical. It includes barnyard noises, a devilish fiddle solo, and a reverie of unmatched calm. And it finishes with a curious, naive but heartbreakingly sincere song about a child’s view of Heaven, before gently floating off to sleep. Key Elective Topic: Music 1900 - 1945

Jaime Martín conductor Ingrid Fliter piano Fate and despair suffuse the Pathétique. But with its dark opening, a waltz in 5/4, and an exhilarating march immediately followed by the first slow finale in symphonic history, it’s also extremely original. It follows one of Mozart’s finest piano concertos, a miraculous blend of elegance and very human wisdom. Key Elective Topics: 19th Century Music Classical Limited Availability 13
