2020 SEASON 1
Season Highlights
Vladimir Ashkenazy Donald Runnicles Our Principal Guest Conductor is one of the most sought-after figures in the world of music. He returns for the second year of his artistic project Music of Inspiration, including performances of Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis and Mahler’s Fourth Symphony with a cast of great Australian soloists.
Simone Young After ground-breaking performances in the US this year, Simone Young returns to Australia to continue her Visions of Vienna project celebrating the composers who called this intellectual and cultural epicentre home. For 2020 she conducts symphonies by Beethoven and Brahms as well as a program of music from Johann Strauss Jr. and his circle.
2
The Sydney Symphony’s Conductor Laureate makes a welcome return for the Northern Lights Festival, featuring the music of Sibelius and Grieg. This vast, luminous music will find a perfect resonance in the Sydney Town Hall, where our association with Vladimir Ashkenazy began in 1969.
Marin Alsop A major force on the orchestral music scene, Marin Alsop continually demonstrates that, in her words, ‘music has the power to change lives’. That power is demonstrated in August when she leads A Global Ode to Joy – a new setting for Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. This ambitious project celebrates Beethoven’s central vision of a united humanity.
David Robertson A bold artistic visionary and a supreme communicator, David Robertson continues his association with us in 2020. His choices of Brahms’ mighty A German Requiem and an all-Mendelssohn program with Augustin Hadelich are highlights of the year.
Christian Tetzlaff After a four-year wait, Christian Tetzlaff returns to the Sydney Symphony. He brings his astonishing technique and exquisite interpretative powers to a performance of Bach’s complete Sonatas and Partitas and Brahms’ Violin Concerto, finishing the year with performances of genius.

In Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante, the viola’s soulful voice in dialogue with the brilliant violin is a masterclass in theatrical storytelling, a wordless operatic duet for contrasting characters, played by Sydney Symphony Principal Viola Tobias Breider and Associate Concertmaster Harry Bennetts. The stories continue with Debussy’s sensuous vision of mythical Greece and RimskyKorsakov’s Arabian Nights fantasy starring the beguiling Scheherazade.
The versatile Alexander Shelley brings his fine-tuned musicianship to orchestral favourites by Debussy and Rimsky-Korsakov to transport you to far-off lands. Debussy’s sensuous Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun is a daydream in the shimmering heat, while the seductive Scheherazade spins Arabian Nights tales of Sinbad, princes and festivals in an opulent orchestral fantasy. A tour-de-force program of two great chamber works by great Romantic composers. Souvenir de Florence is supremely lyrical and imbued with the passion and drama of Tchaikovsky’s best writing. Its accent is unmistakably Russian, with Tchaikovsky drawing on Russian folk melodies and rhythms, particularly in the rollicking finale. Grieg finished only one of his three string quartets, but the result is spectacular, a perfect marriage of drama and energy.
Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev are two of the greatest ballet composers, crafting some of the most memorable melodies ever composed. Their chamber music is just as deftly written and just as magical. The first of Tchaikovsky’s quartets is passionate and lyrical. Prokofiev wrote his Quintet for a roving dance troupe while he was living in Paris. A master of colour and character, Prokofiev uses an unusual combination of instruments to extraordinary effect.

The slow movement of Beethoven’s first Razumovsky quartet provides the musical inspiration for Brett Dean’s Testament, where Dean explores the psychological distress Beethoven expressed in his ‘Heiligenstadt Testament’ of 1802 as his hearing deteriorated. Almost ten years later Beethoven creates one of his greatest Symphonies, the Seventh. It’s a work of extraordinary energy and vitality; Wagner declared it ‘the apotheosis of the dance’. Its famous second movement is unrelentingly dramatic, and the other movements are propelled by endless exuberance. His refinement of sound and searching intelligence also equip him for the mercurial beauty of the fantastical flights of Schumann including the rarelyheard gem of Etude-Variations on a refrain from Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, as well as the bittersweet beauty of the Geistervariationen. Beethoven is here too, of course, at his most witty and relaxed, riffing on popular hits of his day. Brahms’ First String Sextet contains all his best features – gorgeous melodies permeate the work with an alluring expressiveness. The Complete Brandenburg Concertos Directed by Erin Helyard BACH Brandenburg Concertos Erin Helyard harpsichord-director Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No.2 is inscribed on the record carried by Voyager I and II space probes, making Bach an interstellar ambassador for human creativity. Each concerto is a unique window into Bach’s vast imagination: the pastoral dance of horns and oboes in No.1, the nine orbiting strings lines in No.3, and No.5 with its showy harpsichord solo is the first keyboard concerto. Finally, the masterful string writing of No.6 casts a dusky halo on ecstatic ripples of interlocking voices. Acclaimed Australian harpsichordist Erin Helyard guides the Orchestra through each of the six spectacular worlds of Bach’s instrumental magnum opus. MAHLER Symphony No.4 The Heavenly Life
Donald Runnicles conducts Mahler Music of Inspiration
MAHLER Symphony No.4
KERNIS Musica Celestis MAHLER Symphony No.4
Donald Runnicles conductor Jacqueline Porter soprano Mahler’s Fourth Symphony is an artistic turning point, his last work to draw upon his early songcycle, Des Knaben Wunderhorn. The Fourth is built around the song ‘The Heavenly Life’ which, sung by soprano, appears in the final movement, but pervades the entire work. It’s Mahler’s most compact symphony, a full half-hour shorter than the gargantuan Second and Third, and has an air of innocent nostalgia and homely cosiness. A brief dance with mortality in the second movement elicits some of Mahler’s most colourful music. The symphony ends not with a whimper, but a restful sigh and heavenly contentment. Wed 11 November 7pm Symphony Hour (Wed) or Create Your Own Pack R D
ROMANTIC DISCOVERY
Donald Runnicles conductor Jacqueline Porter soprano If Mahler had grown up in 1960s Pennsylvania instead of 1860s Bohemia, the result might have sounded a little like Aaron J. Kernis. His music is just as lushly romantic, searingly passionate and above all beautiful. His ‘Heavenly Music’ seems to transcend time and place and gets as close to the eternal as music takes us. Mahler’s Fourth Symphony is a much larger enterprise, but a perfect companion. The work is one of Mahler’s most uplifting, full of gorgeous melodies, radiant colour and a finale of perfect serenity. Help us Share Our Music There’s lots of change ahead in 2020. We have a new home in a new neighbourhood, and a new season with many new concerts.
A gift from you, of any amount, will ensure that live orchestral music will continue to bring joy to our community and bring us together. Please, consider making a gift when you complete your subscription.
Something that will never change is our shared love of the music we enjoy together.
To make your tax-deductible donation, complete step 4 of your 2020 booking form, call (02) 8215 4600 or visit sydneysymphony.com/donate
As we embark on this exciting stage of our journey, you can join us in sharing that love and passion. Let’s create a future together, where music inspires, delights, challenges and unites even more people. With your help, we will visit more regional centres than ever before, performing more school and mainstage concerts and delivering more workshops; we will continue to train teachers in primary schools across NSW to help them bring music into classrooms; we will nurture the next generation of talented orchestral musicians and we will make our music accessible to all, online and in the concert hall.
