SYDNEY TRUESDALE

Sydney Truesdale

I am interested in public spaces that contribute to a healthy city and the Integration of nature into an urban environment. Many of our communities struggle with disconnect from nature and from each other. I believe Landscape Architecture can play a role in bringing people together and create meaningful spaces that foster a sense of identity and cultural memory.

“… Because the ecological idea of people connecting with nature is something that goes a lot deeper than just channelling storm water around. It also really has to do with experience, and how people can have extraordinary experiences in the city, extraordinary experiences with other people.” –James Corner

Mistletoe doesn’t just have to be for Christmas. At The Architecture For Humanity Pulp: Paper Art Party, my teammate and I designed and hung Paper Mistletoes miscellaneously from the factory’s structure, encouraging people to get to know each other better.

GREEN LINE SCULPTURE GARDEN

Sydney Truesdale

Attracting birds and people, fantastical sculptures emerge from the rolling garden along the hydro corridor. This section of the green line will not only provide a much-needed connection from Christie Street to Bathurst Street, but also a new public amenity in the form of an urban gallery. A direct path allows faster pedestrian and cycling traffic with a quick cut through the site, while a mysterious boardwalk showcases local artists creations and their wild inhabitants.

AQUA FARM

Cultivating floating crops responsibly on lentic ecosystems.

Examination into current regional and global issues regarding land and water scarcity have directed the proposal for AQUA-FARM. The proximity to many urban areas, including the GTA makes the location strategic to grow food, and pertinent given the ever-shrinking area of Class 1 Agricultural land.

Sydney Truesdale

James Dick Quarry has disrupted and changed what was once a vegetated landscape into a new industrial landscape. As gravel and sand are dug out from the earth a new resource emerges, water. AQUA-FARM is a proposal that hopes to take advantage of this new resource, by cultivating food on the water; industry that becomes part of the landscape it exists within.

1976 CLASS ONE AGRICULTURAL LAND

Shallow waters with aquatic plants clean the water that our crops are grown in and create habitat for the spawning fish. Islands, marshes, and shallow waters are salvaged from the unextracted land and roads that currently exists on site to create a wildlife corridor that connects existing protected natural corridors in the region to the island sanctuary. Bridging our site is a pedestrian path which provides an opportunity for visitors and locals to experience and enjoy the floating farms, the wildlife it is a part of, and to encourage people to celebrate with the natural world we are inescapably a part of. 2014 URBAN DEVELOPMENT

MIMICO CREEK

25

MIMICO CREEK Mimico Creek is one of the many watersheds around Toronto that are polluted by the surrounding urban fabric. As such, the perception of the creek is poor, and adjacent communities experience a disconnect from the green infrastructure in their own backyards. This project aims to implement a strategy to remediate the creek, to provide access to the adjacent communities, and to introduce a visual registration of the improvements. With some subtle interventions, the surrounding neighbourhoods will feel more connected to the creek as a whole, and thus feel more inclined to contribute to its improvement.

OPERATIONS

Sydney Truesdale

OPERATION 1 - REMEDIATE

Pre-treatment strips of gravel that double as a pathway provide initial filtration of polluted runoff. Patches of wetland planted throughout creek will clean water as it drains into and down the creek.

ACADEMIC

26

OPERATION 2 - PROVIDE ACCESS

Pathways extending into the communities and throughout the creek allow for year-round movement through the creek corridor.

OPERATION 3 - REGISTER CHANG-

Beacons located along creek test the water and display a colour to indicate the health of the water around it. Graphic components can be digitally changed so as to attract people to the creek throughout the year.

The Master Plan establishes a comprehensive framework that reinforces and celebrates the Site’s unique geographical position on Mississauga’s Central Waterfront. It envisages a vibrant, mixed-use community that emphasizes architectural excellence, connectivity, a high quality public realm, community gathering spaces, and a series of green parks and open spaces that collectively enhance the Mississauga Waterfront experience. This Master Plan is based on five structuring moves that translate the vision and principles of Inspiration Port Credit into a comprehensive planning framework for the Site: 1) deliver a continuous waterfront; 2) establish green corridors that connect the Waterfront to Lakeshore Road West; 3) introduce a new cranked street and block pattern that mimics the surrounding street pattern; 4) establish dual catalysts (a Campus and a neighbourhood Village Square) to incite movement into the Site; and 5) divide the Site into five distinct character precincts.

FOOD CART This design-build project helped to fund-raise for ‘The Stop’ community kitchen. From seed to meal we were inspired by the process of food: translating ideas of growth, cooking and eating, into our design.

Sydney Truesdale

Like a leaf growing from a branch, a shelf extends from the diagonal beam. This element is a delicate expression of our initial concept of growth and an appreciation of the life of food. We discovered cast away objects, which we transformed into the defining features of our cart. A canopy of recycled cans and a surface from an old picnic table welcomes you to stay and enjoy a meal.

DINNER SERVED The concept of our team’s design for our pavilion, was inspired by the visible fault line that runs perpendicularly through the our site and is visible in the Rideau river.

Sydney Truesdale

The contrast between smooth and rough textures in the river as a result of the fault line is reflected in our dining pavilion through the material choices in our two main walls. We wanted the walls to visibly split to emphasize the concept of fracturing.

The building concept for IQ3 is to create a beacon from the Gardiner, and a visual connection to downtown Toronto. The urban design concept for the project, is what I find really interesting; by visually extending the park space, views to the sky are maintained while hiding the Gardiner expressway.

BIOTECTURE I travelled to Taos, New Mexico for a 2 month workshop where I studied with architect Michael Reynolds as part of the Earthship Biotecture academy. Throughout the term, our class built much of the Earthship Village Ecology student building as well as two residences. These buildings capture rainwater, filter grey water through plant beds, are heated by design and using thermal mass and use photovoltaic panels to create electricity.
