“I got the idea to create profocus templates from David Turner’s Ad 2 class originally, but forgot about this and re-learned this technique in Clay’s Light Control class. I got the idea of reimagining Andy Warhol’s Silver Factory after seeing it in Men and Black III and watching a documentary on him. I then just dragged my shutter to create the lines and played around with using the profocus. A lot of this just came from playing around with different lighting equipment and gels. It’s fun when I can build off of these techniques and see where I can take it.”

“As a photographer I think it’s essential to be completely in love with light and how it touches it’s surroundings. I try to focus on the quality of light just as much, if not more than the subject itself.”

“I love incorporating light into my photography, allowing it to be part of the photo. Light can be seen as its own form of art and the camera allows me to show that to the world.

Light is a necessary element in all types of photography. Without it, taking photos would not be possible. However, there is an artistic balance when it comes to utilizing light when creating photos. This zine features four College of Art and Design students from Rochester Institute of Technology who emphasize the use of light within their work as a major creative choice. Through the work of Sarah Lenker, Aiden Bourke, Sara Vertino, and Camille Watts. I hope to share with you the power that light has to bring a whole new meaning to photographs. Whether it be portraiture or composite work, purposeful use of light can truly bring work to life and create something that is only possible to see through the lens of a camera or in the mind of the artist.
