he K-Plate control plate, presented by Kariba in an exclusive world preview at The Big 5 in Dubai, is not just a plate: it’s much more. It is the result of deep researches arising from a simple question: “how could we improve the comfort of people in their bathrooms?” The answer to this question is based on the concept of Smart Home Technology. Home automation, often called “Smart Home Technology”, is the use of technology to automate your home devices in order to allow you to control almost every aspect of your life at home through the Internet of Things. This trend, which began only a few years ago, has developed into one of the largest growing markets in the world. The Kariba K-Plate is completely made in Italy and features a highly customizable design in order to fit harmoniously into any bathroom, elevating its aesthetics; but its outstanding
14
feature is that it offers important and innovative possibilities. Thanks to the touchless technology it is possible to activate rinsing by touching slightly the specific sensors, making the plate easy to clean and its use much more hygienic. Downloading the Kariba application, it is also possible to modify the aesthetics of the product in real time, choosing the colours of the lights to fit better into the atmosphere of the bathroom. Future and possible applications are countless and it’s all possible thanks to the powerful computer enclosed in each plate: it constitutes the true technological core of K-Plate and it’s in constant development. The possible applications also include the possibility to rinse remotely and to program a hygienic rinse. In addition, K-Plate allows to reach the world of HealthCare and aids for disabled people, with the capability to monitor vital parameters, to record them and to send safety notifications to an emergency contact. Of course, the concern for the environment that distinguishes Kariba’s products remains firm, with a reduced water consumption that allows to save from 3 to 4.5 litres of water at each flush.

arden Spot is a Polish designer and manufacturer of Pixel Garden modular systems used to create living vertical gardens. The company’s overriding emphasis through its proposition is the protection of the natural and sustainable environment, which is why these Pixel Garden modules are made from 100 percent recycled materials. Among Garden Spot’s offering, customers can find products including Alu Line and Simple Line. The former is made of Pixel Garden modules with integrated irrigation systems framed into aluminium. Meanwhile, Simple Line comprises modules framed into those made of steel. The frames can be hanging, standing (equipped with legs) or mobile (equipped with legs and wheels).
www.thebig5.ae
A SENSE OF COMMUNITY This year Garden Spot has also introduced a new product in the form of waterfall fountains made of stainless steel and glass; complementing the existing Alu Line and Simple Line frames to create a perfect place for ultimate relaxation. The idea is compatible to the biophilia hypothesis of scientist Edward O. Wilson, which is defined as the need for a sense of community with other living organisms. Vertical gardens play a very important role in modern exterior and interior design. Green walls can be installed in exterior environments, for example, on building elevations. Covering the elevation with greenery helps to cool the building on sunny days. In interior design the green walls are even more important because they allow implementation of greenery even in smaller, tighter spaces where greenery cannot be grown in traditional, horizontal ways. Additionally, green walls located in interiors have a significant influence on human health and comfort.
Make sure you drop by to see Garden Spot for a bit of serenity at this year’s Urban Design and Landscape Expo.

A GLOBAL LEADER WRITING THE MIDDLE EASTERN SOLAR STORY Gulnara Abdullina, General Manager for JinkoSolar’s Africa and Middle East operations, analyses the region’s solar story so far
JINKO SOLAR HALL: ZA’ABEEL 5 STAND: Z5 A109 PLEASE BEGIN BY DESCRIBING JINKOSOLAR’S RISE TO PROMINENCE IN RECENT YEARS. Over the past 10 years in particular we have climbed to the top of the mountain, and in particular the past three years have seen us become the leading and most innovative solar module manufacturer in the world. We are a vertically integrated player listed on the New York Stock Exchange with an integrated annual capacity of 11.5 GW for silicon wafers, 8 GW for solar cells, and 12.6 GW for solar modules. We employ more than 13,000 people, and have shipped over 43GW of solar modules to customers in 108 countries around the globe. In 2018, Jinko Solar had 13 percent global market share, and 30 percent in the Middle East and Africa. We’ve held our number one crown for three consecutive years now, and are on track to repeat our success this year.
WHAT PRODUCTS ARE YOU SPECIFICALLY SHOWCASING AT THIS YEAR’S BIG 5? We will be showcasing products with specific value to clients who operate in harsh conditions. So, for the Middle East/GCC region in particular, our Cheetah Mono range of products, which harness the sun only from the front side, i.e. monofacial, will be particularly relevant. They have been deployed by most of our clients for more than a year now and will be on show alongside our equally fresh and popular Swan bifacial products, most notably featuring transparent backsheet instead of the glass. We’ve also recently launched the new Tiling Ribbon technology called Tiger module to eliminate the inter-cell gap and increase efficiency. Tiger will be commercially available early next year.
16
WHAT VALUE DO THESE PRODUCTS BRING TO THE MIDDLE EAST?
HOW WOULD YOU ANALYSE THE MIDDLE EAST’S SOLAR JOURNEY OVERALL?
Durability in harsh environments is very critical. As solar becomes mainstream in emerging markets, we have to bear in mind their specific climatic conditions such as elevated temperatures and high humidity. Ensuring we have a reliable product with durable materials is pivotal and we offer clients better performance and higher power density to this end. Instead of generating 335 watts per square metre, as is the case with traditional modules, you’re able to get more than 400 through our products that are a big breakthrough. Deploying these ultra-high efficiency products, our clients can maximize their plant power output by putting more powerful modules or reduce Balance of Systems: number of arrays, structures and cables. For the rooftops, it translates into lighter weight per sqm. Lower EPC cost and lower BOS cost consequently contribute to lower LCOE and higher IRR.
When it comes to the Middle East, the region is finally taking part and becoming a prominent member of the ‘GW club’ in solar. We’re happy to see that but the sky is the limit when you see how programmes are being rolled out and the potential that’s there. Diversifying the energy mix in the region will see it play a more prominent role in the overall solar map across the world; and Jinko will continue to be a prominent player in this development. Since Jinko entered into Middle East and North Africa ‘MENA’ region eight years ago, with more than 2.5 GW installed capacity as per end of 2018, JinkoSolar has worked its way up to keep its 25 percent market share in the region. We are the most localized technology provider in the region, and clients appreciate this proximity and our execution capability.

CENTRE STAGE AT THE SAUDI PAVILION The Saudi General Investment Authority introduces ‘Invest Saudi’, the country pavilion at this year’s Big 5 Solar
SAGIA STAND: Z4 A111 HALL: ZA’ABEEL 4 PLEASE FIRSTLY INTRODUCE ‘INVEST SAUDI’ The ‘Invest Saudi’ pavilion at this year’s Big 5 Solar is a multi-agency collaboration bringing together the primary government actors in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy sector. This effort is coordinated and facilitated by the Saudi General Investment Authority (SAGIA alongside industry partners. Together, we represent a complete investment ecosystem that will drive the massive upscaling of renewable energy capabilities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, particularly in solar power. We are therefore presenting a compelling investment proposition. Through the government agencies here with us today we cover an entire sector from power generation to investment licensing and from industrial parks and special economic zones to project financing. At The Big 5, we are targeting project developers, manufacturers, contractors and service providers who are active in the renewable energy industry.
HOW WOULD YOU ASSESS THE STATUS OF SAUDI ARABIA’S ENERGY INDUSTRY AT PRESENT? In Saudi Arabia, we are blessed with an abundant amount of untapped renewable energy resource in the form of wind and solar. We are also undertaking a massive economic transformation that not only calls for an energy transition away from liquid fuels in our power system but will also lead to the creation of thousands of jobs in the local economy. Earlier this year, the Kingdom announced its long-term energy mix target which will see 57.8.GW of renewable energy being installed by the year 2030. Some 40GW of this renewable energy will be from Solar PV. This represents a massive opportunity to scale up our manufacturing base, in-Kingdom, to
18
meet our domestic demand while also supporting the growing global demand for clean power technology. This is the value we hope to add to this important sector.
HOW WILL THIS SITUATION EVOLVE OVER THE COMING YEARS DO YOU THINK? The pipeline of solar projects in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is immense and fast moving. To meet our targets, we will develop no less than 3GW of new solar capacity a year for the next decade. A proportion of this capacity will be competitively tendered by REPDO while some will be met by strategic partners who commit to long term capex investment into our manufacturing capabilities. There are multiple avenues towards entering the renewable energy market in Saudi Arabia and we are excited to meet and exceed our targets.
HOW SIGNIFICANT IS THE BIG 5 AND THE BIG 5 SOLAR IN SPREADING WORD OF THE SAUDI ARABIAN SOLAR SECTOR? The Big 5 Solar is one of the biggest shows in the region that offers guaranteed traffic, of both visitors and fellow exhibitors, who are looking for potential business ventures within Saudi Arabia’s growing solar market. It is because of this that we have chosen to come to the event, where we will highlight exciting opportunities in renewable energy projects and in the wider renewable manufacturing industries. Invest Saudi is designed to provide support to a range of industries. The inclusion of Solar Energy within the initiative highlights not only the potential it holds, but also the willingness of the government to drive forward solar energy industries with a range of initiatives.
“WE ARE… UNDERTAKING A MASSIVE ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATION THAT NOT ONLY CALLS FOR AN ENERGY TRANSITION AWAY FROM LIQUID FUELS IN OUR POWER SYSTEM BUT WILL ALSO LEAD TO THE CREATION OF THOUSANDS OF JOBS IN THE LOCAL ECONOMY”

EMERGY CONSULTANCY’S MD TALKS ALL THINGS HVAC R AHEAD OF THE HVAC R PIONEERS’ SUMMIT Ahead of his presentation Azmi Aboul-Hoda explains why people should be the most important factor when considering indoor air quality; while highlighting a few trends visitors to HVAC R Expo should look out for just start proposing solutions. We should understand how each building operates, how it behaves, how people use this building, what they need, and what they don’t need. Understanding all of this and more will help us propose the correct solutions to improve indoor air quality.
WHAT DESIGN AND ENGINEERING TRENDS CAN VISITORS TO THE HVAC R EXPO LEARN ABOUT TO IMPROVE INDOOR AIR QUALITY? One example is using personalised ventilation. I am an advocate for this type of ventilation, because if you consider the amount of fresh air supplied to the building and the huge cost of cooling this fresh air, you find only one percent of that fresh air is actually being used. The other 99 percent is getting recirculated and is becoming return air. Why not deliver this fresh air directly to the people using it? So, instead of delivering 1,000 litres per second of fresh air to a huge space, and mixing it with return air, let’s deliver 100 litres per second, but make it more personalised by using outlets on or above workstations, right next to people. Speaker bio: Azmi S. Aboul-Hoda leads EMergy Consultancy, a privately held corporation specialized in the built environment field with focus on sustainability, energy saving solutions, audits and surveys, building performance, and indoor environmental quality. WHY IS INDOOR AIR QUALITY IMPORTANT TO BUILDING OWNERS, OCCUPIERS AND ANYONE HEADING TO THE HVAC R EXPO? For building owners, it will increase the value of their building. If we are talking about business owners, it will increase the productivity of people working in their business.
sense at all, from a commercial point of view, or from a health point of view. We have to find ways of reducing the energy costs without sacrificing productivity. The buildings we build are not for saving energy, they are for people. And, there are ways to increase the efficiency and reduce the energy cost, without sacrificing the indoor air quality.
HOW CAN THE IMPACT ON PEOPLE REACH THE TOP OF THE AGENDA FOR ATTENDEES AT THE HVAC R EXPO?
HOW CAN EXISTING BUILDING STOCKS DELIVER GOOD INDOOR AIR QUALITY?
The big picture is about the comfort of people and the productivity of people working in a building. If you look at it like that, you realise you really need to take care of the indoor air quality. You cannot sacrifice it, because you want to reduce energy costs. It doesn’t make
One of the most important things – and it is not simple – is, understanding and analysing the building’s behaviour. This is extremely important to really achieve indoor air comfort. Each building has its own characteristics, which we need to understand, before we

DECONSTRUCTING STONE Middle East Stone hosts P&T Architects and Engineers Director, Drue Newcomb, who looks ahead to his presentation, and the region’s affiliation with stone as a material IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT ARE THE MAJOR TRENDS IN THE STONE AND MARBLE INDUSTRY TODAY? With the current focus on sustainability, we will see more stones being sourced regionally to reduce the cost of transportation. Instead of being a constraint, this is a potential incentive to look at vernacular regional architecture and reinterpret it in a modern way.
HOW DO YOU EXPECT THE STONE AND MARBLE INDUSTRY TO EVOLVE IN THE FUTURE? In the Middle East, with what we believe is a renewed emphasis on regional stone use, we expect the limited availability of current stones to incentivize the production of new composite stone materials, improve veneer technologies, or even boost the use of non-traditional stone materials, which are sourced regionally.
WHAT ARE THE UPCOMING TRENDS IN TERMS OF STONE AND MARBLE DESIGN IN THIS REGION, CONSIDERING ITS HISTORY AND CULTURE? The region has a great historical trend of using stone and this is particularly noticeable in countries like Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and the UAE. Some cities have embraced the previous use of stone and reinterpreted it, as we can see in the prolific use of Redstone in Saudi Arabia. P&T is a company that likes to draw on vernacular architecture and reinterpret it through modern trends, emphasizing both the rich and historic cultural use of stone within the Arabian Peninsula.
WHY SHOULD INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS ATTEND AN EVENT LIKE MIDDLE EAST STONE? Middle East Stone is great because it focuses on just one material. P&T’s presentations aim is to give other industry professionals an understanding about how architects select and design with the material. We are going to present a case study from a completed project in the Middle East, showing the entire design process from the initial conception to its final completion. At the very least, we hope it will be entertaining!

THE BIM ROADMAP TO THE ESPAI BARÇA PROJECT William T. Mannarelli, Director of Real Estate at FC Barcelona outlines the benefits of 4D BIM in conjunction with FC Barcelona’s high-profile project and his participation at the RTA Innovation in BIM Summit 2019 HOW DO YOU OPTIMIZE BIM DURING PRECONSTRUCTION? The use of BIM methodology during preconstruction is probably one of the stronger tools to optimize the entire project design during the early stages of development. It means a significant increase in qualitative analysis compared with traditional preconstruction architectural sketches including loose conceptual floorplans and vague area take-offs. As such, BIM can be used in pre-construction to evaluate the conceptual design, the project´s budget and schedule, utilizing BIM 3D, 4D and 5D representation to optimize the design process. It is precisely at this early stage where BIM can facilitate good decision making based on good qualitative information to ensure the project’s success.
WHAT ROLE DOES 4D BIM MODELING PLAY IN THE ESPAI BARCA PROJECT? Espai Barça has embraced 4D BIM since its early stages, with the aim to coordinate on a holistic level the different subprojects to be executed at FC Barcelona’s Les Corts Campus. This requirement, not always easy to achieve in the Spanish construction industry, is aligned with our DNA to push the boundaries and in this particular case, brings us multiple benefits including the following: better project coordination, a proper tool for communication to different stakeholders, detailed project monitoring, conflict prevention before construction starts and safer worksites. Espai Barça has a group of three planning professionals leading the 4D BIM approach inhouse supported by three, inhouse 4D BIM specialists. In addition, Espai Barça has involved some external parties to generate an independent progress monitoring of our construction projects, all based on EB’s 4D BIM central file.
“4D BIM SCHEDULING IS MUCH MORE THAN JUST 4D VISUALIZATION” … PLEASE COMMENT ON THIS STATEMENT? Visualization of the construction processes as planned is probably the most known output for the 4D BIM Scheduling, however, there are a host of other interesting benefits including the ability to create “what-if” scenarios and improved sequences by maintaining a schedule
24
linked to the architectural geometry, generating monitoring graphs (i.e. expected m3 of concrete per day), allowing a detailed monitoring of the construction works utilizing visual comparisons of the actual status versus planned, and many more.
WHAT’S THE BENEFIT OF HAVING THE RTA INNOVATION IN BIM SUMMIT? FC Barcelona is heavily invested in innovation and we are committed to promote new scientific research projects, collaborate to create new products and services, and enhance future professionals in the industry through our digital platform, master programmes and conferences. Currently the Espai Barça Project is collaborating with the Barça Innovation Hub to develop new projects regarding BIM, 4D and sustainability. We understand that a big part of innovation is linked to being able to share the acquired knowledge, and participating in the RTA Innovation in BIM Summit gives the Club the perfect platform to share our developments with our colleagues of the industry, and also learn from their experience.

ARCHITECTURE OF ITS TIME AND PLACE Richard Murphy, winner of 22 RIBA Awards and author of Carlo Scarpa and Castelvecchio Revisited, looks ahead to his talk at the RIBA Day PLEASE INTRODUCE CARLO SCARPA AND CASTELVECCHIO REVISITED This is the title of a book published after 21 years of work by the practice. The title was chosen deliberately as these aspirations have guided our work throughout that time. In a city like Edinburgh, where the entire city centre is designated as a “world heritage site” and where both planners and citizens are extremely conservative and suspicious of contemporary architecture we have found ourselves continually needing to make the case for a contemporary contribution to the evolving history of the city. Fake history or hiding behind historic facades is unfortunately the easy solution in so many cases. William Morris, the founder of the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Buildings wrote that “after all, history is perpetual change” and we need to continually make the case that our grandchildren need historic buildings of today as well as of yesteryear.
WHAT IS THE OVERRIDING PHILOSOPHY AND HISTORY BEHIND THE WORK? The history of the 19th and 20th centuries has been the gradual erosion of the intimate connection between architecture and the place in which it is found. The exclusive use of local materials, the careful husbandry of energy resources and the beauty of the town and villages created by the aggregation of thousands of similar design decisions creates a natural beauty that we have today lost. First industrialisation in the 19th century and then globalisation in the 20th has made architecture very similar all over the world; often with the same architects building the same buildings! We prefer that all our buildings are “rooted” in their place based on a search for underlying patterns of the city or landscape in which they are found. The lecture takes six projects from our work to demonstrate these themes. RIBA CPD at The Big 5 Dubai: RIBA is the official architecture knowledge partner for The Big 5. You can hear more from Richard Murphy on “Architecture of its time and place” at the RIBA Talks on 26th November, 17:00 - 17:45.

EPC CONTRACTS IN THE GCC ENERGY SECTOR
The Big 5 Solar hosts Kennedy’s Khalil Mechantaf as one of the event’s speakers at the third edition of the show and he shares his views on GCC EPC contracts in advance of it HOW CAN EACH CONTRACT BE MANAGED AND HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DELIVERY OF ITS WORKS AND, ULTIMATELY, THE SUCCESS OF THE PROJECT? Proper communication, project management and contract understanding are key for the success of any project, not just EPC based projects. However, in current market conditions, one of the key reasons for projects’ failure is the shortfall in financial resources. It is, therefore, essential for both parties in a contract to ensure that the required resources are available before committing to any project.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR EVENTS SUCH AS THE BIG 5 TO OFFER FREE EDUCATION TO CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONALS? The Big 5 talks are extremely popular and usually generate an intellectual discussion over pressing issues affecting the construction market. They are freely accessible and should remain so for all construction professionals, given the benefit they bring in raising awareness and understanding on the fundamentals and latest developments in the industry.
TO WHAT EXTENT ARE THE MIDDLE EAST’S CONTRACTORS EQUIPPED TO CONSTRUCT NEW ENERGY PROJECTS? Despite fierce competition, Middle East contractors have shown the resilience and expertise required to run and operate largescale construction projects, not just energy projects. Commonly found in midstream and downstream energy, such as oil & gas, or even in power plants and water projects, Middle East contractors have demonstrated over the past decades their commitment to the region and more importantly, have adapted to difficult and changing market conditions. However, there are two pressing dynamics that may transform the energy apparatus in the Middle East. The first is the rising demand for renewable energy, itself a highly sophisticated industry with yet little understanding over its bankability and costs of operation and maintenance. The second is the China Belt and
30
Road Initiative and its impact on the UAE and region. To survive, Middle East contractors must consolidate their experience in key energy sectors and restructure their operations in the various stages of a project’s lifecycle so as to promote efficiency and effectiveness. ‘
WHAT IS A MODEL EPC CONTRACT?
An EPC contract is a single point responsibility contract requiring of the contractor a turnkey scope of work with guaranteed performance parameters and completion date. A model EPC contract minimises various contractors’ cross claims for delay and disruption, performance shortfall and damages for termination. It contains a defined scope of work, usually with warranties that contractor will do all works that are otherwise necessary, having regard to the agreed performance requirements.

CONTINUING A WINNING CHEMISTRY BETWEEN ITALY AND THE UAE Invernizzi International Sales Sa’s owner Alessandro Biasiotti discusses how the The Big 5 has become a major hub for Italian entrepreneurs like himself over the years
A
t this year’s Big 5 event in Dubai, no European country will be better represented than Italy. Populated by a fragmented industrial cluster, the Southern European nation has long been dedicated to export opportunities and, according to Invernizzi International Sales Sa’s owner Alessandro Biasiotti, there is a strong sense of pride to be an “Italian ambassador” for their own highquality products and services. “UAE has a proactive foreign policy and Italy has always been considered a friend to the country,” he says. “Italy has played an important role within oil & gas business in the Emirates over the years, as well as in food and fashion which have followed the same path. “And then, last but not least of course, design, interiors and construction has become a crucial industry, always placing Big 5 as a major meeting point for professionals. “I believe there is a winning chemistry running between Italy and GCC countries. It’s been so in the past, it will be the same in the future.” Invernizzi International Sales Sa started with Ms. Invernizzi in 1990 before Alessandro joined to promote international markets and international exhibition around the globe. “Our company is focused on opportunities,” he continues. “We chase emerging markets to be offered to the Italian professionals who are willing to take new challenges. “We’ve been positively restless over the past 30 years and our vision is to keep being restless and positive at the same time.” Biasiotti’s analysis of Big 5 Dubai is that is has become a major business platform for international entrepreneurs like himself who are willing to expand into GCC countries. His company has been visiting the event ever since 2001 and is now offering this special platform in the form of the Italy Pavilion to other Italian exhibitors. “Big 5 Dubai is an attractive hub for individual companies, Italian Chambers of Commerce, Italian Regions and national export institutions,” he explains. “Italian participation at The Big 5 is important. It’s even more important when Italian public bodies support individual companies. “This year, more than ever, we will see the participation of some regions who were not present in the past edition, and some others who take their opportunity for the first time this year.”

TURKEY ESTABLISHES ITSELF AS THE THIRD LARGEST COUNTRY PAVILION AT THE BIG 5 Cagatay Ersahin of Expotim International Fair Organizations explains why more than 200 Turkish construction players attend the prestigious Middle Eastern show each year
A
s the organiser of the Turkish country pavilion at this year’s Big 5, Expotim International Fair Organizations Inc will not only be showcasing products but facilitating the meeting and networking of local buyers and suppliers. As such, the pavilion stand is pivotal to putting forward domestic operators at one of the biggest and most distinguished shows. “What brings us to The Big 5 every year is the high business potential that the show creates for our exhibitors,” says Cagatay Ersahin, Deputy General Manager at Expotim. “With many high-valued construction projects and many more on the way, Dubai stands as the heart of the construction market of the Middle East. So, we believe participating in this show opens a very precious trade channel between Turkey and UAE for Turkish companies wanting to leverage The Big 5 brand.” Established in 2003, Expotim now stands as the leading company in the Turkish exhibition industry with its wide range of trade show portfolios in industries across construction, fashion, agrifood, automotive, energy, packaging and much more. For construction, The Big 5 is a natural choice considering how prevalent the region is in the sector. “For most countries aiming to break free of an oil-dependent economy, construction would be the first industry they go to most of the time,” Ersahin continues. “So, when looking at the region, and maybe throughout the world, we observe that the mega project trend is highly on the rise. “We believe that Turkey is one of the most advantageous participant countries here because of the geographical and cultural proximity to the region which is a great advantage considering the logistics and convenience of doing business.”
A PRESTIGIOUS EXHIBITION The Middle East is understandably a primary market for Turkish construction companies; many of whom will be in attendance at the national pavilion at the 40th instalment of The Big 5. “The expectations are great,” Ersahin continues. “We expect this year’s show to be the most successful one in terms of networking and generating business. Participating here, our exhibitors anticipate meeting key buyers in the construction industry from the region, as they do every year.
36
“WE EXPECT THIS YEAR’S SHOW TO BE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL ONE IN TERMS OF NETWORKING AND GENERATING BUSINESS” “This will be our ninth appearance and over the years we have been one of the top sponsors of the show; never bringing fewer than 200 Turkish exhibitors. Last year, covering 5,000 square metres of net exhibition area, we became the third largest national pavilion at the show.” This year, 220 prominent exhibitors will be in attendance, in recognition of The Big 5’s status as a formally listed “prestigious” exhibition by the Ministry of Trade in Turkey.
THE BIG 5 SHOW DAILIES DAY 2
“The Big 5 should be regarded as one of the top five construction events in the world,” Ersahin affirms and concludes. “Participating here means to be at the centre of the Gulf region’s construction industry, which has a market value of more than $7 trillion spanning 14,300 active projects. “Turkish companies choose participating at The Big 5 because it provides the best audience and best platform to showcase a product in the Middle East region.”

RETROFIT MARKET GROWTH EPITOMISES GREEN OPPORTUNITIES IN THE HVAC SECTOR
Griffin Consultants Director, Hassan Younes takes an environmentally-charged look ahead to the HVAC R Pioneers’ Summit and his talk on “Low chilled water DT in buildings, causes and solutions” WHAT BENEFITS OF THE KINDS OF IMPROVING HVAC TECHNOLOGY ON DISPLAY AT THE HVAC R EXPO CAN BE SEEN IN THE GCC? HVAC systems account for more than 60 percent of annual electricity consumption in Gulf countries and more than 70 percent of peak electrical power demand. Improving technologies are helping owners and developers reduce operating costs and environmental footprints, while cities and countries will see a wide reduction in electricity demand.
WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE ARE THE ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS TO IMPROVING HVAC’S ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT IN THE GULF?
WHY SHOULD BUILDING OWNERS AND DEVELOPERS VISITING THE HVAC R EXPO BE AWARE OF ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY HVAC SYSTEMS? I see three core reasons driving owners into adoption of environmentally friendly HVAC systems. Firstly, government or municipal regulations now often require them. Secondly there is an element of corporate social responsibility. You see this with large developers in particular, where they may have set guidelines, criteria and KPIs for their HVAC and MEP systems. The final driver is clients who are interested in a long-term investment. Clients who own and operate their buildings will look for reduced utility costs over the asset’s life. With utility tariffs on the rise in the GCC, more clients are looking to use more efficient HVAC equipment, which are typically more environmentally friendly than less efficient HVAC systems.
38
“A BIG STEP TOWARD IMPROVING THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF HVAC IN THE GULF WOULD BE TO RETROFIT THE EXISTING BUILDING STOCK WITH MORE EFFICIENT SYSTEMS” HOW HAS THE PACE OF TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE IMPACTED HVAC? The base technology behind HVAC is still basically the same as it was at its inception. We still use the vapour compression cycle to drive the cooling process. However, the efficiency and controls have advanced significantly in recent years. Integration with other systems, sensors and data analytics have all aided preventive and predictive maintenance and improved energy efficiency.
THE BIG 5 SHOW DAILIES DAY 2
A big step toward improving the environmental impact of HVAC in the Gulf would be to retrofit the existing building stock with more efficient systems. At a legislative level we would benefit from the widespread implementation of policies banning harmful refrigerants. At a regulatory level we should keep updating the minimum energy performance standards for air conditioners. Finally, increasing utility tariff rates in places where they remain low would drive owners to select more energy efficient equipment for their assets.
TO WHAT EXTENT CAN VISITORS TO THE HVAC R EXPO PRACTICALLY APPLY TECHNOLOGICAL IMPROVEMENTS TO EXISTING BUILDING STOCK? Where tariffs are high enough in the GCC, the retrofit market is seeing major growth. The potential for energy savings from technological improvements is great. The retrofit focus on changing old equipment, or adding technologies such advanced sensors and controls, can drive both energy consumption and demand lower. t this year’s Big 5, customers will be able to experience a demo of the awardwinning and fast-growing platform, ProTenders; a demo that signals heightened visibility and project intelligence for clients. Alongside this, the company will showcase its eTendering solution which is set up to help decision-makers find the right partners, and the right projects. As such ProTenders is the only platform that combines an eTendering solution with project intelligence and company profiles in a single platform; making it unique in how much it can help streamline a complex industry. When a company subscribes to our platform, they become part of the biggest community of companies in the GCC by maximising their presence in the market through the Company Visibility module where they can showcase their products and projects worked on. To complement this, businesses can then tap into the intelligence module to track and win the right projects by

going outbound and eventually be invited to bid directly through the eTendering solution of ProTenders – another module that allows bidding and all aspects of tendering online securely and efficiently. The platform offers value to different functions within the construction industry and hence sets us apart from other tools on the market. ProTenders is continuously innovating and is driven by solving challenges in the construction industry; one being the lengthy and inefficient procurement processes engulfing the industry. As a result, the next evolution we are codeveloping with our customers is a procurement solution that will simplify how contractors can research and procure construction products from suppliers and manufacturers for any kind of project, whether on-site or from their desk. With $35 billion worth of bids processed, ProTenders is bridging the gap to streamline procurement processes by addressing the need to find the right products for projects. ProTenders is uniquely positioned to solve this challenge because of the high numbers of contractors already using our platform, and indeed the manufacturers and suppliers who have products listed on the platform.
TRANSFORMING CONNECTIONS IN THE REGION Incepted in 2009, today ProTenders has more
than 18,000 member companies, tracks more than 30,000 projects, and has processed more than $35 billion worth of bids as evidence of its rise and its significance in a Gulf region that has similarly developed at speed. However, at the heart of innovation and constant new developments, data for these projects are limited, and this poses a challenge in terms of project updates and potential contract wins. At ProTenders, we aim to transform the way AEC companies connect, track and procure. By combining an advanced bidding engine and construction big data, the platform simplifies how thousands of developers, consultants, contractors, suppliers and manufacturers around the world source new partners, identify and track new project opportunities, and streamline their procurement processes securely and efficiently.

MEET THE EXHBITOR
CONTRIBUTING TO THE LIFEBLOOD OF THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR CEO, Eng. Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, looks ahead to one of the key weeks in Emirates Steel’s calendar - The Big 5 International Building & Construction Show Steel is the well-established lifeblood of the construction sector, and at Emirates Steel, we hope that exhibitors can recognize our vitality to the future of the construction sector as it continues to grow regionally.
HOW IMPORTANT IS THE BIG 5 AS PART OF YOUR ANNUAL CALENDAR?
METAL, STEEL AND ALUMINIUM EMIRATES STEEL HALL: SHEIKH SAEED 3 STAND: SS3 C51 PLEASE INTRODUCE YOUR WORLDCLASS ORGANISATION AND ITS EVOLUTION TO THIS POINT Emirates Steel was founded in 1998 as a simple re-roller of steel billets, following an increasing need for steel from the local and regional construction sector. Over the subsequent 20 years, we have grown to be one of the leading steel producers in the GCC and the wider Middle East. Our production capacity is 3.5 million tonnes and we are serving more than forty markets across the globe. As a world-class steel manufacturer, we maintain extensive quality control and assurance standards to ensure our products are of superior quality; maximizing value for customers, and returns to our shareholders.
40
“STEEL IS THE WELLESTABLISHED LIFEBLOOD OF THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR, AND AT EMIRATES STEEL, WE HOPE THAT EXHIBITORS CAN RECOGNIZE OUR VITALITY TO THE FUTURE OF THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR” WHAT PRODUCTS ARE YOU PARTICULARLY EXCITED ABOUT AT PRESENT, THAT WILL BE ON SHOW THIS WEEK? At this year’s Big Five conference, we shall be showcasing our extensive range of products designed for the construction sector with delegates, alongside discussing with exhibitors the current status of the regional industry. Over the previous 20 years, we have contributed to the development of iconic projects including the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi and the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, amongst many other noteworthy examples.
THE BIG 5 SHOW DAILIES DAY 2
We are based out of Abu Dhabi, and customers in the GCC and Middle East markets enabled our growth and continue to sustain us as our core customer base. We are proud to serve the regional construction market as a leading steel producer, as the sector continues to expand at a high pace. We hope to discuss these developments and further this year at the Big 5 conference. The regional construction sector is particularly unique, given that it is a central pillar in national diversification plans, leading to large government investment within projects that can enable growth of companies, of cities, and of sectors at a markedly fast pace, compared to other regions. Last year, we welcomed the opportunity to meet and speak with a wide range of regional delegates regarding their needs in the construction sector. We were able to discuss the evolution of their projects and how Emirates Steel can continue to provide high quality products and services to their construction projects moving forward.
AND WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU THIS YEAR? At the exhibition, we look forward to discussing with customers their current needs, and speak about upcoming opportunities for growth over the next few years. The current market is continuing to expand, with ever greater architectural and engineering requirements, and we at Emirates Steel wish to ensure that our products continue to meet those evolving needs. We see The Big 5 is as an important opportunity to share major updates regarding our products and services, as well as using it is an opportunity to develop further relations with new markets. We look forward to participating in this year’s Big 5 International Building & Construction Show.

MEET THE SPEAKER
LEADERS IN LANDSCAPE Senior Associate at Cracknell and one of UDLE’s Advisory Board members, Ian Rose looks ahead to his talk at the Urban Design & Landscape Summit HOW IS THE LANDSCAPE INDUSTRY EVOLVING IN DUBAI? I think the landscape industry in Dubai is very exciting, especially looking at the scale of the work and the pace of the work. It’s good to see how it has matured over the years: I’ve been here since 1998, so I’ve seen quite a lot of changes in terms of the interest in sustainability, connectivity, and the science behind the landscape industry. The focus is still on beauty, as it is very important that the landscapes we create are attractive, but now the industry is also focusing on the environment and the biodiversity, so I find it an exciting, challenging place to work.”
WHAT ARE THE MAJOR CHALLENGES FOR LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS IN DUBAI? The major challenges on projects are always the same: time and finishing - landscape tends to come at the end so we often get crushed or have to work in the wrong season. Also, budgets: showing clients, developers the value of landscape, what it can bring to their project and that it is not just something that looks beautiful, it is not an optional extra, but rather a fundamental part of the success of their project.
“THE INDUSTRY IS ALSO FOCUSING ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE BIODIVERSITY, SO I FIND IT AN EXCITING, CHALLENGING PLACE TO WORK”
HOW WOULD YOU LIKE THE REGIONAL INDUSTRY TO EVOLVE IN FUTURE?
HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE AT LAST YEAR’S URBAN DESIGN & LANDSCAPE EXPO?
I’d like it to look at the city holistically, look at connectivity, look at how we can mitigate climate on a large scale. I’d like it to bring pedestrian connectivity, cycle connectivity, and improved transit network. It’s exciting to see the work across all the Emirates. To bring that together into a more holistic standard for the UAE would be great.
It was a very good event. I am very excited about the upcoming edition, to see the speakers at the conference, the content, and also to see the exhibitors and discover what new materials there are. I’m looking to see more innovation in the materials being offered, so I think it will be a great event and I can’t wait for it.

The Gulf region is a big market for all global businesses, and the UAE, in particular, is the easiest business friendly environment of all to set up and service the whole region. The UAE is attractive for a number of reasons, including: having one of the most liberal trae regimes in the Gulf region; focusing on economic diversification in trade; having a well established financial infrastructure; providing for a window of free trade zones; having a tax-favourable environment for most industries; boasting a high number of expatriates; and exuding a safe, inclusive environment to all. GCC includes many important aspects for business owners such as the economy, regulatory framework, tax aspects, audit and accountancy, human resources and employment, trade and banking. That’s what makes business in GCC unique compared to other regions.

n its practical form, Thermoluxx is a Swiss thermal liquid insulation and fire protection nanotechnology coating looking to save energy in the market; but its complexity delves much further as an evolution from technology developed for space travel. Our scientists are responsible for the interplay of millions of tiny ceramic hollow spheres with a swellable binder that makes possible, for the first time, a coating substance that protects the underlying substance from heat, cold and moisture all year round in any room climate and any weather condition. In addition to their efficient insulating and moisture-regulating properties, Thermoluxx coatings also offer effective and reliable protection against corrosion and UV radiation. Thermoluxx coatings can also be used for extreme scenarios such as insulation against heat radiation from heating pipes or also

ASSENT LAUNCHES MODULAR BUILDINGS SOLUTION AT THE BIG 5 OFFSITE AND MODULAR CONSTRUCTION AL SHAFAR STEEL ENGINEERING LLC (ASSENT) STAND: Z6 E31 HALL: ZA’ABEEL 6 Al Shafar Steel Engineering LLC (ASSENT), one of the largest steel fabrication and erection companies in the GCC and part of ASGC Group, is launching its new pre-fabricated modular building during The Big 5. Modular building offers a fast, efficient, eco-friendly and affordable alternative to traditional building methods, ideally suited for rapid growth in the UAE and beyond. Made from light-gauge steel, pre-fabricated modular buildings are constructed offsite in a factory setting before being transported and assembled on-site. This is done under controlled plant conditions using the same materials, designed to the same codes and standards as conventionally built facilities. In this methodology, buildings are produced in “modules” that when put together on site reflect the identical design, intent and specifications of the most sophisticated site-built facilities without compromise. This methodology allows several activities to happen in
parallel, dramatically decreasing project delivery timelines with an average reduction of between 40-50 percent for large-scale projects. A modular building approach can also reduce project build budgets by as much as 30-40 percent. Amr Ali, ASSENT Managing Partner, says: “The scale of construction work in the UAE, and across the wider region, has brought about the need for faster, more flexible, and convenient solutions that enhance the building process. Prefabricated modular building fits the bill perfectly. We believe this is the most rational development of the construction sector, falling in line with the fast pace of life and the high standards of living

we all enjoy in the UAE. Modular solutions are flexible enough so that with smart planning, innovative designs, and powerful capabilities, all building types of any size can be accomplished.” Modular construction can be used for all types of buildings—single or multiple stories— such as residential, offices, educational, healthcare, warehouses, and bathroom and kitchen pods. Today ASSENT serves a wide array of projects in the UAE and abroad, including landmark developments such as Al Maktoum Stadium, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library, and the forthcoming Dubai Hills Mall.
