THESIS PROJECT
THE GOAL OF THIS THESIS WAS TO PROVIDE A COMMUNAL SPACE THAT USES THE MEMORY OF A CITY IN AN EXPLORATION OF THE DICHOTOMY BETWEEN TIMELESSNESS & THE INHERENT OBSOLESCENCE OF ARCHITECTURE.
THE AIM WAS TO PRODUCE AN ARCHITECTURE OF ENDURANCE THAT GOES BEYOND NOVELTY, BY EMULATING BOTH INNOVATION AS WELL AS A FUNDAMENTAL EXPERIENCE OF SPACE THAT STANDS SELF-UNCONTRADICTED.
THE GOAL OF THIS THESIS WAS TO PROVIDE A COMMUNAL SPACE THAT USES THE MEMORY OF A CITY IN AN EXPLORATION OF THE DICHOTOMY BETWEEN TIMELESSNESS & THE INHERENT OBSOLESCENCE OF ARCHITECTURE.
THE AIM WAS TO PRODUCE AN ARCHITECTURE OF ENDURANCE THAT GOES BEYOND NOVELTY, BY EMULATING BOTH INNOVATION AS WELL AS A FUNDAMENTAL EXPERIENCE OF SPACE THAT STANDS SELFUNCONTRADICTED.
THE DESIGN PROCESS STARTED FROM THE IDENTIFICATION OF COMMON ARCHITECTONIC TRAITS, BOTH PHYSICAL & METAPHYSICAL, FOUND IN “TIMELESS ARCHITECTURE”.
CASE STUDIES & THEIR CONCLUSIONS LED TO THE SELECTION OF THE SITE OF INTERVENTION; THE ABANDONED REMAINS OF THE NAFDEC CINEMA, WHICH FULFILLED THE CRITERIA OF BEING TIMELESS ITSELF.
AN INTERVENTION THAT EMULATED THIS QUALITY WAS DESIGNED.

MURREE ROAD PRESENTS AN OVERARCHING SENSE OF DISJOINTED INDIVIDUALISM THROUGH THE EXISTING STREETSCAPE, WHERE EVERY FACADE FOLLOWS IT’S OWN GRID, IT’S OWN MATERIALITY AND IT’S OWN COMPOSTIONAL STYLE. GLIMMERS OF VERNACULAR MATERIALITY IS INCREASINGLY MASKED, IN THE EXISITNG CONDITION, BY GROWING SUPERFICIAL ORNAMENTATION.
THE PROJECT IS AN EXPLORATION OF INTRODUCING ADDITIVE ELEMENTS DERIVED FROM A COMMON PRE-EXISTING, SITE SPECIFIC, DESIGN LANGUAGE, USING TWO PROMINENT FACADES AS THE BOUNDS FOR THE INTERVENTION. URBAN DESIGN
THE INTERVENTION SEEKS TO BRING FORWARD THE BARE, NATURAL AESTHETIC OF VERNACULAR BUILDING MATERIALS, IN CONJUNCTION WITH A SITE DERIVED MODULE, TO HOMOGENIZE THE SITE VISUALLY AND EXPERIENTIALLY.
NO SUBTRACTIVE ELEMENT IS INTRODUCED IN THE SITE, RATHER ANY DISLOCATION OF FUCNTION HAS BEEN REINTERGRATED INTO THE SITE, THROUGH THE INTERVENTION.
THE MODULE IS DESIGNED TO AFFORD VARYING MODES OF INTERACTION TO THE USER.
THIS INTERACTABILITY HAS BEEN INTEGRATED INTO EACH MAJOR NODE ON SITE.

ARCHITECTURE DESIGN
THE PROJECT REQUIRED THE CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW MUSEUM OF HERITAGE IN THE CITY OF TAXILA, PAKISTAN. THE ALLOWED AREA OF INTERVENTION WAS EITHER THE SITE OF THE EXISTING MUSEUM AT A KEY NODE OF THE CITY OR A WORLD HERITAGE SITE, “BHIR MOUND”, THAT SAT ADJACENT TO THIS EXISTING MUSEUM. TO AVOID DAMAGE TO BHIR MOUND DUE TO POSSIBLE ARCHEOLOGICAL REMAINS, THE INTERVENTION WAS MADE TO THE SITE OF THE EXISTING MUSEUM, WHICH WAS MADE SURE TO BE PRESERVED AS PART OF THE DESIGN.
THE DESIGN INTENT WAS TO DERIVE EXPERIENCE FROM THE BUDDHIST IDEOLOGY OF KARMA. THE ARCHITECTURE IS TO REVEAL PATHS & PRESENT CHOICES TO THE USER & REWARD THEM WITH AN EQUAL EXPERIENCE. CHOICES ARE DIFFERENTIATED BY THE LENGTHS OF THEIR CIRCULATION PATHS; THE FURTHER YOU CHOOSE TO WALK, THE BETTER EXPERIENCE PRESENTED.
THE PLAN & GRIDS ARE DERIVED FROM THE COMBINATION OF RADIAL GEOMETRY FOUND IN EARLY BUDDHIST ARCHITECTURE OF TAXILA, LIKE THAT OF DHARMARAJIKA, AND LINEAR GEOMETRY OF BUDDHIST MONASTARIES BUILT LATER, AFTER SEVERAL OTHER CIVILIZATIONS AND THEIR ARCHITECTURE HAD BEEN LAYERED ONTO THEM.

SEEKING TO ELUMATE A SENSE PATRIOTIC TIMELESSNESS, A NEED AROSE TO ADDRESS THE INTERVENTION IN TERMS OF MAINTENANCE AND UNIFORMITY. THE EXISITING INTERIOR DID NOT HAVE A SENSE OF HOMOGENEITY. THE CARPET DEMANDED REGULAR CLEANING DUE TO USE.
INTERIOR DESIGN
MARBLE WAS ALSO CLADDED ONTO THE WALL, IN A PALETTE THAT SAT NEUTRALLY WITH THE REST OF THE SPACE.
THE SCOPE OF INTERVENTION REQUIRED RETAINING THE CENTRAL DESK; THE FINISHING WAS CHANGEABLE.
THE CEILING WAS DESIGNED TO UNIFY ALL PLANES THE SPACE WAS COMPOSED OF.
THE DESIGN ADDRESSED THESE ISSUES AS WELL AS OTHERS REGARDING SEATING, CONCEALING HVAC EQUIPEMENT NEAR WINDOWS ETC.

THE COMPETITION REQUIRED THE PLANNING OF A CULTURAL CENTER FOR THE CITY OF SEDHIOU, SENEGAL. IT AIMED TO RE-INVENT THE IDENITITY OF THE AREA AND TO REACH THE GOAL OF CREATING A LOCATION WHERE LOCAL CULTURES CAN HAVE THE CHANCE TO BE SHARED, PASSED ON AND ULTIMATELY PRESERVED.
AN ARCHITECTURAL STRUCTURE THAT STOOD AS WITNESS OF THE PEACEFUL RELATION OCCURRING AMONG LOCAL ETHNIC GROUPS AND PROMOTES, THE PRESERVATION OF LOCAL CUSTOMS WAS DESIRED.OUR TEAM OF TWO, SHOWCASED A SITE INTEGRATED DESIGN, WITH A STRUCTURE THAT RESONATES WITH THE ICONOGRAPHY OF THE COMMUNITY.
