Coney Island images (1970–2020) taken and assembled by a single noted street photographer

170 beautiful and visually strong black-and-white photographs by a well-known and respected photographer

Two short but insightful essays about Coney Island and interviews of two important people of Coney Island

Coney Island is an American icon celebrated worldwide, a fantasyland of the past with an evolving present and an irrepressible optimism about its future. It is a democratic entertainment destination where people of all walks of life and places are brought together. There isn’t anywhere else like it, and that is much of its appeal. Here 170 evocative black-and-white images taken by eminent photographer Harvey Stein from 1970 through 2020 simultaneously look back in time while giving a current view of the people and activities of this “poor man’s Riviera.” The images capture the wonder and intimacy of Coney Island. There is no photo book that has been published that documents a 50-year period of a famous location taken by one photographer. Being in Coney Island is like stepping into another society, rather than just experiencing a day’s entertainment.

About the Author Harvey Stein is a professional photographer, teacher, lecturer, author, and curator based in New York City. He currently teaches at the International Center of Photography and has taught in several undergraduate and graduate photography programs.

My Idea comes alongside you as a whimsical companion and prods you with questions that help flesh out your idea until it is finally finished and ready to go out into the world. A simple question without a simple answer

Lisa S. Roberts

There are many books explaining the world of art, but practically none that introduce readers to the tenets of good design. This book fills that gap.

This graphically delightful book is guaranteed to raise readers’ Design IQ by defining the seven characteristics of good design. Each chapter describes one characteristic, accompanied by five product examples illustrated in cut-paper art. Clues to Uptown New York’s Past

Frank Mastropolo

This timely book honors Uptown New York’s rich economic past, even as many of today’s long-established businesses are losing their leases

From Union Square to Harlem, the neighborhoods examined offer the most-telling clues to a long-gone way of life

Appealing to New Yorkers, historians, and urban archeologists, more than 100 photos and stories of faded business signs illuminate New York City’s past

Ghost signs hold the secrets of businesses and products that vanished decades ago. Clues to our jobs, schools, places of worship, cafés, and concert halls are hidden in their stories. New York City’s neighborhoods, from 14th Street to its northernmost point, contain scores of timeworn ads that have improbably survived for decades, and journalist and television producer Frank Mastropolo has captured their stories. Often, a storefront renovation yields the discovery of a sign that has been long obscured. Familiar brands like Studebaker and Horn & Hardart’s Automat live on in these faded ads. Other morepuzzling signs refer to streetcars, snake oil cure-alls, and the forgotten aspects of city life. All are part of more than 100 photos and stories that sketch Manhattan’s economic and social fabric over the past century.

About the Author Frank Mastropolo writes a series about New York City’s ghost signs for New York Magazine’s Bedford+Bowery blog. He is the author of Ghost Signs: Clues to Downtown New York’s Past and Fillmore East: The Venue That Changed Rock Music Forever.

Color, Fashion, Style, and the Midcentury Automobile

Jeff Stork and Tom Dolle

A beautifully illustrated study of the influence of women, fashion, and midcentury design on automobiles

For any readers with an interest in classic American cars, fashion, or midcentury modern design

Includes hundreds of full-color photos and seldom-seen postwar automotive marketing brochures, ads, and other materials

This highly visual book explores the seldom-told story of how glamour, fashion, design, and styling became the main focus of automotive marketing from the postwar 1940s through the 1970s. With the expansion of the American suburbs after WWII, women suddenly needed cars of their own. By adopting the fashion industry’s yearly model changes, as well as hiring many designers and stylists from the fashion industry, the automobile industry made a direct appeal to the rising sophistication and influence of women. By perfecting the fashion-centric concept of planned obsolescence, it became the dominant economic engine of American postwar prosperity. The dramatic photography, elegant fashion, and use of color and materials in midcentury automotive marketing created a groundswell of demand for new cars. Much of the marketing imagery of the period hasn’t been published since it first came out, and this book features some of the best.

About the Authors Jeff Stork is a classic car historian, writer, and researcher. He spent his career in the automobile industry, with over 20 years of marketing experience with the Big Three. He curates a large private automobile collection in Palm Springs, California.

Tom Dolle is an award-winning graphic designer with 30 years as a design studio owner in New York and 20 years as an adjunct professor in Pratt Institute’s Graduate Communication Design program. He is the creative director at Destination PSP, a product design company in Palm Springs, California.

Images of Bygone America

Heribert Niehues

A documentary-style reminder of the forgotten symbols of a mobile nation; from east to west, America as it is rarely seen

One-of-a kind images capture the gas stations, diners, motels, houses, and cars left behind by a shifting civilization that continues to this day

A rare, fascinating look at the powerful forces that have shaped small towns, and the rise and glory of legendary America

The United States has been shaped by mobility like no other nation on Earth. The automobile made possible almost limitless development, but there was a dark side: ghost towns and deserted regions emerged due to economic crises, cultural shifts, and catastrophic weather. Heribert Niehues’s award-winning photographs trace these lonely places, which elicit strange fascination mixed with melancholy for a bygone era. His Hopperesque images of gas stations, diners, motels, houses, and cars document the rise and former glory of a legendary America. Over the decades, only nature has changed their visage, and the old pioneering spirit is still tangible. Hauntingly beautiful, the photos portray the poetry of transience: from east to west, America as it is rarely seen.

Contemporary color photographs are an invitation to become absorbed in the details that make train stations worth a good look. For graffiti enthusiasts, historians, and anyone interested in the New York City scene from the ’80s on

While CAVS has changed, too, now painting only with permission, he’s still a vandal at heart.

Women as Subjects in Street Art around the World

Dr. Katja Fleischmann and Robert H. Mann

Photos, primary sources, and historical and cultural context examine women as the frequent subject of street art

For all interested in street art, art and cultural history, and the representation of women in art

Artists featured in the US, Mexico, Costa Rica, Peru, Chile, France, Italy, and South Africa

The first book to focus exclusively on women as subjects in street art, this study, part travelogue and part dialogue, examines these depictions of women artistically, politically, and culturally across continents. Interviews with artists peel back the layers between artist and image, revealing stories about their work, its context, and its environment. From artists in L.A. pushing back on Hollywood’s shiny perfection; to painters in Costa Rica examining the cultural links of women, myth, and nature; to women in South Africa decrying domestic violence, what links these works are their temporality and public ownership. Why do wall artists choose women as their frequent and favorite subjects? What does it say about our conceptions of gender and rebellion, protest, pride, place, and community? And how does the growing commercialization of street art affect their portrayal? Color photos and guided historical context provoke these questions and inspire further ones.

About the Authors Robert Mann is a journalist and writer whose investigative work has included producing an award-winning documentary on the failed war on drugs in the United States. Mr. Mann lived and worked in Barcelona, Spain, editing a monthly trilingual broadsheet as Spain emerged from decades of dictatorship under General Franco. He has a keen interest in global politics and poster wall art to communicate political messages.

Dr. Katja Fleischmann is an award-winning educator and researcher in design who has worked in Berlin, London, the United States, and Australia. She grew up in the German Democratic Republic, where street art was used as a propaganda tool. Her unique East/West design perspective brings a fresh set of eyes to the street art movement. Dr. Fleischmann is working as an associate professor for visual communication design in Australia.

Concert Memories from the Classic Years, 1964–1976

Edoardo Genzolini Editorial contributions by Jeremy Goodwin

Exclusive, never-before-published anecdotes on the Who from fans, friends, and insiders

Hundreds of never before published photos of the Who in concert from 1964 to 1976

Presents for the first time the only existing photos of bassist John Entwistle smashing his bass on stage

Most know that the legendary English rock band the Who performed concerts at ear-splitting volume, smashed their instruments, and became one of the world’s most influential groups. Their period from 1964 to 1976 saw the creation of such classic songs as “My Generation,” “Pinball Wizard,” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” as well as the Tommy, Who’s Next, and Quadrophenia albums. But how many know the stories of those fans affected by their music and live performances, or the angst and insecurities that drove bandleader Pete Townshend to new heights during this time? Who saw Pete Townshend handing his guitar from the stage to a grateful fan, and what happened next? Who has seen photos of bassist John Entwistle being anything but the “Quiet One”? Or what happened backstage at Woodstock and the Monterey Pop Festival? This book offers what Pete Townshend himself describes as an “intriguing and extremely insightful take on the Who and myself.” The reader will be thrown into untold stories, hundreds of previously unpublished photographs, and uncirculated recordings clarifying the misinformation, myths, and legends. It’s a labor of love from a fan for fans that gives voice to a collective consciousness that might otherwise fall silent over time.

About the Author Edoardo Genzolini is passionate about cinema and music with an archival attention to both fields. He discovered the Who by watching the classic film Woodstock. He is also a bassist and independent filmmaker.

B. B. King: From Indianola to Icon

A Personal Odyssey with the “King of the Blues”

Photos and text by Charles Sawyer

B. B. King’s journey from sharecropper to musical icon, one who brought the music of America—the blues—to the world

Never-before-seen images of King throughout his long life on stage, on the tour bus, with fans, and at home

King gave an estimated 18,000 concerts in 90 countries, including a legendary performance in Zaire in 1974, prior to the Muhammed Ali–George Foreman heavyweight title bout

This book documents a great American story, that of B. B. King, the “King of the Blues” and one of America’s most important popular musicians. With fascinating images and history—most published for the first time—it traces his migration from the Chitlin’ Circuit (the national network of Black theaters and roadhouses), to Club Ebony in his hometown of Indianola, Mississippi, and eventually to Carnegie Hall. What was it about Riley B. King that enabled him to become the worldwide “King of the Blues”? The author’s quest to answer that question is chronicled here and tells the story of the onceimpossible friendship between someone who grew up poor and Black in Mississippi and the white middle-class New Englander who fell in love with the blues and was determined to tell the story of his musical hero. King thrilled his audiences not only with his musical prowess, but with his capacity to establish intimacy, regardless of crowd size; he gave an estimated 18,000 concerts in 90 countries. B. B. King: From Indianola to Icon tells the story of King’s journey from sharecropper to musical icon, one who brought the music of America—the blues— to the world. It is a book for blues fans and others who want to know how and why this transformation occurred.

About the Author Charles Sawyer is a photographer, writer, and leader of the blues band 2120 South Michigan Avenue. He wrote The Arrival of B. B. King, the first full-length biography of the great bluesman. Now retired, he was a software professional for high-tech companies and taught both software and blues history courses at Harvard Extension School. He consulted for the B. B. King Museum during its development.

Life as a Sideshow Tattoo Artist, 3rd Edition

Alan Govenar

The colorful life and work of Stoney St. Clair, an American tattoo icon

For tattoo artists and enthusiasts, as well as anyone interested in circus and sideshow culture

Nearly 100 additional photos expand this updated edition, celebrating Stoney’s old-school style and independent spirit

In this updated edition, the extraordinary life of Stoney St. Clair— circus performer turned tattoo artist—comes to life in photos, tattoo flash, and his own words, edited by writer and filmmaker Alan Govenar. Born Leonard St. Clair in 1912 in West Virginia, Stoney discovered his passion for drawing at Johns Hopkins, where he was being treated for rheumatoid arthritis. Not deterred by his disability, he joined the circus at 15 as a sword swallower and then learned tattooing from other circus performers. From traveling with the circus to setting up tattoo shops in Tampa and Columbus, Stoney met, tattooed, and worked with some of the greatest. Vincent Canby, writing in the New York Times, described Stoney as “an ebullient little man with the gab of a circus tout (spoken in the accents of Appalachia) and a fund of bizarre stories about tattooing and unrelated matters.”

About the Author Alan Govenar is an award-winning writer, folklorist, photographer, and filmmaker. He is president of Documentary Arts, a nonprofit organization he founded to advance essential perspectives on historical issues and diverse cultures. Govenar is a Guggenheim Fellow and the author of over 30 books.
