Patty Rodriguez and Ariana Stein • Illustrated by Citlali Reyes Chico Mendes, a Brazilian rubber tapper, trade union leader, and environmentalist, became the leading figure in fighting to preserve the Amazon rainforest. When he learned of the injustices his fellow rubber tappers endured, Chico joined the cause to fight for rural rights. He advocated against deforestation, going as far as to peacefully block bulldozers and stand up against chainsaws. The only fear he felt was knowing the rainforest was in danger and it was up to him to defend it.

This biography of Chico Mendes will inspire little ones who dream of saving the planet—one tree at a time!
