THE SHOESHINE WIN
Lew Burdette’s pitching was the main reason the Braves defeated the Yankees in the 1957 World Series. However, first baseman Nippy Jones’s wellshined shoes deserve some credit. The Braves trailed 5–4 in the 10th inning of Game 4. Jones led off for Milwaukee. He jumped back from a low inside pitch. It was called a ball. Jones argued that he had been hit on the foot. He proved San Francisco Giants his point by showing the umpire a shoe polish smudge on the ball. Jones 978-1-62832-850-9 Seattle Mariners was awarded first base. The Braves rallied to win the game. The shoe polish 978-1-62832-851-6 smudge was a turning point in the series.
