NMSA Cup 4/21/2014

WHAT IS IT? The NMSA Cup is an academic competition among the seven accredited naturopathic programs in North America. Each school wishing to participate in the NMSA Cup at the annual NMSA Conference will select four students and an alternate as representatives. The winning team will take home the NMSA Cup trophy WHO RUNS THE NMSA CUP? The NMSA Cup committee has set up rules of game play and is responsible for soliciting questions for competition from the Foundations of Naturopathic Medicine Project (FNM), alumni of accredited naturopathic programs, faculty of accredited naturopathic programs and state licensing boards. Questions will be sent to an independent party who is qualified to review the questions for clarity and accuracy. The committee welcomes members from all accredited naturopathic programs. HOW DOES IT WORK? Each school wishing to participate must select a campus coordinator to act as the primary liaison between that school and the NMSA Cup committee. The details of the coordinator’s job are outlined below. The coordinator may undertake the responsibilities of the coach as well, but in general, the campus coordinator maintains an administrative perspective. The responsibilities of the Coordinator include:

Publicizing the NMSA Cup intramural competition at his/her school. Recruiting and training volunteer game officials for the intramural competition, including time keepers, score keepers, judges and moderators. Recruiting an ND Coach (if necessary). Coordinating all details of the intramural competition. THE COACH The coach should be a naturopathic physician, such as a faculty member or graduate of that school. The coach is responsible for working with the school coordinator to set up practice sessions once the final team has been selected. The coach will need to write questions for their team’s practice. GETTING STARTED Although each school may select its team of four players and an alternate if the school desires, members may be chosen in whichever way the school prefers. The committee will not dictate how teams are selected from within their respective schools, but recommends each school establishes a series of intramural competitions among students with the “winning” group of students representing that school at the NMSA Cup Competition held during the annual NMSA Conference. Intramural competitions are a wonderful way to build support for the competitors and to promote the NMSA Cup.
When selected early, the team has more time to practice and bond as a working unit. The committee suggests continuing competition on the intramural level to help the team hone its competitive edge and build community interest. Another suggestion is for the team to challenge a group of faculty to “exhibition games. The committee stresses that these are simply suggestions for participating schools to consider when selecting their NMSA Cup teams. The committee also recommends that each school purchase a set of game buzzers with which the team can practice. The buzzers used in the competition are Zeecraft Challenger I with showtime handgrip buzzers. More information for team members and coaches can be found at www.naturopathicstudent.org.
Rules of Competition
Requirements of Competition To compete, each school must provide the NMSA Cup National Coordinator(s) with the following information by June 15th: 1. The names, contact info including email address and phone number - of each team member, alternates, coach and School Coordinator. 2. T-shirt sizes of each team member (note, t-shirts will only be provided for four players, one alternate, and one coach). FORMAT/GAME OVERVIEW 1. The NMSA Cup is a doubleelimination question and answer game played between two teams of four players each. A team may play with no fewer than three players. A team of three may be completed to four players between halves. 2. Points are scored by correctly answering questions asked by the moderator.
NMSA CUP NATIONAL TOURNAMENT The NMSA Cup National Tournament will take place in conjunction with the annual NMSA Conference. The national tournament will be run according to the rules and regulations detailed below. The NMSA Cup committee will provide functioning lock out buzzer systems for use at the national competition. The 3 4/21/2014
sets of competition buzzers are kept in the NMSA Office, located at NCNM in Portland, OR.

3. There are two types of questions: toss-ups, worth 10 points each and bonuses, worth 10 points each. A team must correctly answer a toss-up in order to be given a chance at a bonus. 4. Each team member will be given a number 1-5 to be worn to each round of competition. This number identifies each individual player for All-Star points. The highest scoring player from each
team will be awarded an All-Star Award during the awards ceremony.
be declared the winner and advance to the next round.
GAME PROCEDURE 1. NMSA Cup matches consist of 20 questions broken into two halves of 10 questions each. A half is completed once 10 toss up questions and the associated bonus questions have been answered.
ANSWERING TOSS – UPS 1. On Toss-Ups, players must signal and be recognized before beginning their answer. Once a player has been recognized, s/he must immediately begin his/her answer.
2. Alternates may be switched into the game at the beginning of any round or at the beginning of the second half of any round. No player changes can be made once play has begun. 3. Each half is begun by the Moderator, reading the supplied script followed by the reading of the first toss up question. This script may be omitted after all teams have heard it at least one time. 4. During the competition, the score keeper assigned to each contest will keep score on the official score sheet supplied. The number (1-5) of the player who correctly answers the question will be logged into the score sheet under the appropriate question type (toss up or bonus question). At the end of each half, the Scorekeeper verifies the score with the Judge(s), announces it and it is declared official. The scorekeeper also will tally the all-star points for each player at the end of the round. 5. If the score is tied at the end of the game, the tie is broken by a suddendeath play-off of toss-up questions. 7 toss-up questions will be asked and the team who has the highest score after the seven toss up questions will

2. The first answer that is spoken is considered to be the final answer. Even if you misspeak, this is considered your final answer. 3. If the Moderator completes the reading of the question, then players are given approximately 3 seconds from the time the Moderator finishes reading to signal and must answer immediately once they are recognized. The Game Officials should allow for a natural pause, but no stalling (timing with a stop watch is not necessary). 4. A correct answer on a toss-up question scores 10 points. If the answer is incorrect, the question is turned over to the other team. The players on the second team must still signal and be recognized before answering. 5. Every time a player answers a tossup question correctly, their team, and their team only, gets the chance to answer a bonus question. 6. A player may interrupt the reading of a toss-up before the Moderator has completed it. Once the player has signaled, the moderator will stop reading the question. The moderator
recognizes the player and the player is given the opportunity to answer. 7. If the answer is correct, the team earns 10 points and a chance at the bonus question. The player’s number is noted on the score sheet to keep track of each individual’s total points throughout the competition. If the answer is incorrect, the question is finished for the other team. 8. On a toss-up, an answer given before a player is recognized is considered incorrect. If it is the first team to signal, the question is turned over to the other team. 9. If a player does not answer within 3 seconds a game official calls “time.” An answer given after time is called does not count. Where applicable, the question is turned over. 10. If a player confers with a teammate on a toss-up question, the answer is disqualified, even if it was correct. Obvious non-verbal cues are considered conferring.
1. A team earns the chance to answer a bonus question after a team member correctly answers a toss-up question. 2. On bonus questions, all team members should confer. If there are conflicting answers, the captain must speak for the team. The captain may designate (verbally or with a gesture) another player to answer. The moderator will take the first clear answer obviously directed toward him/her, so teams should be sure that they agree on their response before anyone gives an answer. Only one answer will be accepted. The first answer spoken is considered the final answer. 3. The team is given 8 seconds to confer on a bonus. The moderator should allow for a natural pause but no stalling. Once the moderator has prompted for an answer (“Captain, your answer please”), the captain or designee must begin the answer immediately.
11. If a toss-up question is answered incorrectly and turned over to the other team, the moderator reads the toss-up question again and only the competing team can buzz in to answer. The individual buzzing in first on the competing team must answer the toss-up question without help from teammates.
4. Bonus questions are worth 10 points when answered correctly.
12. Multiple choice type questions may or may not be preceded with the words “which of the following…”.
Question Challenging

5. Bonus questions answered incorrectly are NOT passed on to the other team.
1. Participants may challenge an answer by stating to the moderator, “I’d like to challenge that answer.” The judge(s) will give a final ruling.
2. It is to the discretion of the judges if a question should be thrown out. If a question is deemed vague or inappropriate, the judges at their discretion may throw out the question even if it has already been answered. 3. No points will be scored for the question and play will resume as if the question had not been asked.
to officially lose. If the team who has remained undefeated loses Round 12, a sudden death round will follow, consisting of 7 toss-up questions with no bonus questions. The team answering the most questions right is the champion, and takes home the NMSA Cup Trophy.

The additional 93 questions are held in reserve in the event they are required.
Responsibilities of Volunteers Judges. 1. Each round will have one judge who will make the final decision on any points of debate during the competition. This includes but is not limited to: a. Determining if the answer given by the team will be accepted as correct b. Determining if a person has buzzed in appropriately The Judge, at their discretion, may discuss any point of debate with the moderator and/or coaches. The Judge may use the internet to determine if an answer is correct; other appropriate sources may be used as well. It is requested that each judge bring his/her own laptop to the competition. However, the NMSA Cup Committee will provide a lap top if necessary. Please let the NMSA NMSA Cup National Coordinator know ahead of time so one can be procured. 2. The judge will also be responsible for notifying the moderator when a player has buzzed in before a question has been completely read. At that time, the moderator will stop reading the question. 3. Each judge must be at the competition that they are officiating 20 minutes prior to the start of play. Timekeepers 1. Once a player has been recognized after buzzing in to answer a toss-up question, the timekeeper begins timing. The player has 3 seconds to begin their answer. If the player has not begun to speak after 3 seconds, time is called and the question is turned over to the other team or lost. 2. After a bonus question has been read, the timekeeper shall begin timing. The team has 8 seconds to answer the question. If the team has not begun to speak after 8 seconds, time is called and the question is left unanswered. 3. The timekeeper shall time a 5 minute half-time break.
Scorekeeper
1. The scorekeeper uses the official score sheet and scores 10 points for every correct toss up question and 10 points for every correct bonus question. These points are tallied by noting the players all-star number in the appropriate space on the score card for the question they answered correctly.
2. When the moderator says “the answer is correct” the scorekeeper records the all-star number for the team answering the question correctly by writing the player number on the score card under toss-up or bonus depending on the type of question.
3. At half time and at the end of the competition the Scorekeeper will add up and verify the total score with the judge and announce it as official.
4. At the end of each round, the Scorekeeper will tally the scores of individual team members by their individual numbers. After the final competition, the team member scoring the highest points on each team will be awarded All-Star status.
