POC´s ﬁfth season collection FOUR YEARS HAVE PASSED SINCE LAUNCHING POC AT ISPO. We got there with a strong

convinction that we had something to share and bring to the skiers out there. Time ﬂies, and even though it feels like we started just yesterday, a lot has happened. Beyond the great response we have had from consumers, where POC is now available in thirty countries around the world and grows rapidly, there have been a few milestones. When Julia Mancuso won her Olympic Gold Medal in Turin, back in 2006, we were probably the only Swedes celebrating. Since then we have been lucky to connect with a number of great athletes winning the X-Games, setting World Records, winning World Cups and World Championships. Guys like Jon Olsson, Tanner Hall, Hedda Berntsen and Flo Orley spoil us with their great achievements and are crucial in product development.

VPD is our latest body armor. It sets a new standard in back and body protection with

amazing perfect fit and ergonomics WHAT’S ALSO REWARDING IS THE attention we get for innovation and design. Thanks to great commitment and teamwork in our workshop, POC has been rewarded with more than fifteen international awards. The new body armor line called VPD (visco-elastic-polymer-dough), based on a new polymer formula that sets a new standard in back and body protection. The properties are amazing with perfect ﬁt and ergonomics. ON THE HELMET SIDE THERE IS THE NEW super ventilated Frontal helmet. The helmet

combines four different ventilation systems; an adjustable generous ventilation at the top, POC´s patented VDSAP (Ventilated Double Shell Anti Penetration) around the front and open chimney vents at the back as well as channels on the inside. To reduce weight, at the same time maximizing ventilation, the helmet is a hybrid between an in mold and a hard shell helmet. The helmet has been developed in close collaboration with Jon Olsson. THERE’S ALSO THE NEW GENERATION of goggles; the patent pended Cornea, based on the concept originally developed for our successful Lobes goggles. More than that there is a lot of new stuff. We’ve never been close to launching this many new products before.

POC Lab is the rapid evolution of skiing. The speeds are increasing, drops and jumps are higher and parks have jumps, banks and grinders that are available to most people. Downhill racing, Skier X or moguls are also disciplines where the limits are being tested. The whole scenario is actually a bit freightening. At this pace, we are likely to experience an increased number of serious accidents in the coming years. Therefore, it is important to underline that protection can’t guarantee your safety. What it can do, is reduce the risk of being injured. The most vital ingredient in avoiding injuries is you. Skill and good common sense are the assets that need to be prioritized. Current designs UP TO NOW, THERE HAVE BEEN TWO TYPES OF HELMETS ON THE MARKET. The traditional helmet with a hard shell and an inner core of softer

expanded polystyrene (EPS) has good penetration resistance and energy distribution properties. The disadvantage of the hard shell is that upon impact, the hard structure causes a sudden stop. The brain may continue to move in the direction of travel and the impact is not absorbed very well. The hard shell is also quite heavy which may cause the helmet to bounce off the ground on impact. These properties can lead to brain damage and whiplash injuries. THE SECOND TYPE OF HELMET IS THE ‘IN-MOLD’ TYPE, WHICH ORIGINATED IN THE FIELD OF CYCLING. These molded helmets have a thinner shell of hard plastic, and again with EPS inside. The advantages are that they reduce the acceleration of the brain upon impact and as they are collapsible, they bounce less during a fall. The disadvantages are that they break easily and have less resistance to penetration. In addition, with this technique it is not possible to manufacture a fully enclosed helmet that comes down over the ears and the back of the neck.

Next there is a sandwich construction of shockabsorbing EPS and patches of Supracor polyurethane honeycomb (in the Skull Comp helmet) that absorb and distribute energy progressively. STARTING FROM THE AMAZING properties of

our Skull Comp helmet, we have taken the technology further by incorporating its Aramid ballistic penetration barrier APB, into a series of in-mold helmets – Synapsis. THIS HAS ENABLED US to overcome the tradi-

tional problems of in-mold helmets breaking easily and not being able to withstand penetration. The Synapsis helmets are are designed to offer extreme light-weight, ventilation and comfort without compromising safety. Transferring those qualities and lessons learned into a fully ventilated system has led to a new revolutionary, patent pending; Ventilated-DoubleShell-Anti-Penetration: VDSAP. THIS CONCEPT WAS INITIALLY developed for

the Receptor + all season helmet. A helmet developed and certiﬁed in Europe and the US for skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, biking and water sports. VDSAP is built with double shells with ventilation, placed offset, for maximum penetration resistance and channels in between to evacuate heat, moisture, or water. The inner shell is an extremely thin in-mold shell, while the outer shell is a hard shell of ABS and PC. The properties are amazing and will from this season on be used for the helmets in the new BUG Series as well (all Receptor helmets).

Receptor Crown is an extremely durable helmet due to the EPP liner with multiimpact properties. This means that the helmet does not loose its protective properties after severe hits or with dents in the liner. The material simply returns to its initial shape, over and over. Instead of the common ear-pads, it has a padded and stretchy headband that is easily removed and washable. This solution also makes a cool silhouette.

Synapsis XP

The Synapsis helmet is developed to be ultra light, without sacriﬁcing protection or safety. It weighs a feathery 375 gr and is certiﬁed according the CE-1077 as well as ASTM standards. This has been achieved by using POC´s patent pending ballistic APB, Anti Penetration Barrier. In the injection process, the Aramid is placed between the thin vacuum molded outer shell and the EPS-liner. By succeeding with this complicated process, the helmet withstands penetration despite its low weight. So for those of you seeking an ultra-light ventilated helmet, not comprising safety, there is Synapsis. The optional visor is included.

Super Skull Comp

The Skull Super Comp is based on the Skull Concept but with a carbon ﬁber shell. The carbon shell in this case makes sense. Carbon shells have so far not been a very good solution in ski helmets since they become to stiff and thick which counteracts the performance wanted. Thanks to a new industrial method, it is now possible for us to use a carbon shell, partly using a ductile matrix, making the shell ﬂexy and very light.

THE CHALLENGE IS TO COME UP WITH A FLEXIBLE, comfortable protection that really does the work! Many back protectors

out there are lightweight, but less good when it comes to shock absorption and really protecting your spinal area. With the POC Back Protection System you can be sure to gain protection for the upper part of the spine, including vertebrae C1 – C7, as well as the lowest part including the caudal area. The uppermost part of the spine – the vertebrae C1 – C7, is the most important region to protect as damages here may result in serious irreparable injury or even death.

THE MATERIAL IS HIGHLY DAMPENING, using a modified Polyurethane foam that is soft, comfortable and adapts to create an individual fit for every user. However, when exposed to impact the material stiffens and has an extreme absorption of energy. Most of the protector systems available on the market have a relatively static impact absorption curve and are designed to just pass the specific CE-Norm test. However, this means that low energy impacts are transferred almost directly to the body. Our VPD back protector functions progressively and adapts itself to the force of the impact. TO FURTHER IMPROVE properties the back protector uses a dual density combination, with extra protection covering the spinal area. This way we maximize both the freedom of movement and the shock absorbing characteristic of the protection. Multi impact hard shell system

TO MAXIMIZE ENERGY ABSORPTION POC’S back armor with

hard panel shields has a layer of multi impact EPP. Unlike many other back protectors, EPP also with-stands multiimpact without losing the energy absorbing abilities. The hard shield protector also has a height adjustable waistband system for the best personal ﬁt.

A short sleeve jacket with shoulder-cups, breast plates and a back protector. One of few certiﬁed at Level 2 (“High performance”) of the motor cycle standard EN 1621-2. The new back-protector-concept is made of the new Visco-Elastic Polymer Dough (VPD) that gives a high level of protection as well as a unique capability to adapt its shape to your body. The Spine Ergo is a lightweight back protector, with shoulder straps and a height adjustable flexible waistband system for the best individual fit. The back plates are made of Polypropylene and have an inner shock-absorbing core made of multi impact EPP. Thanks to the Air Induction System that transports moisture and lets fresh air flow in, it has great ventilation. Spine Ergo is the alternative if you prefer to use a light weight hard shell protection with multiimpact shock absorbing properties.

Cervical A ‘must’ – according to us and to our medical experts. This extra shield, made from a sandwich construction of heat-molded foam, protects the top part of the spine from vertebrae C1 to C7. You can easily snap-ﬁt it to the Spine range products.

The patent pended Cornea is based on the POC innovation of attaching the lens on the outside of the frame, to enlarge the ﬁeld of view. POCito Finally, kid´s protection gear that is designed and developed just for them!

POCITO IS A SERIES OF PRODUCTS FOR KIDS between 4 and 10 years old, all developed to prevent accidents or to decrease the severity of injuries in an accident. CHILDREN THESE DAYS FACE A VULNERABLE situation, often skiing on crowded slopes

among over-excited adults running ﬁercely downhill, many of whom are more or less out-of-control but sadly unaware of it. Statistics show that one of the fastest-rising types of accidents on the slopes comes from kids being run into by adult skiers. If a child weighing perhaps 20% that of an adult is hit at high speed, they need an outstandingly good helmet, together with a back protector, to protect the most vital parts of their bodies.

POC is proud to present POCito, a range of products for kids that complies with our mission of reducing the consequences of skiing

accidents and possibly saving lives IN OTHER WORDS, CHILD SKIERS NEED EFFECTIVE, customized protection, and they

also need to be seen. Our ambition is clear, to make no compromises on kids’ protection, but to design products that are at least as good as the adult gear, while trying to understand the speciﬁc needs of children’s safety. But is there any chance of preventing these accidents?

Yes, in many cases we believe there is. Beyond issuing information to skiers in general, we have developed products to alert surrounding skiers to slow down or pay attention and have chosen the most effective colors and properties for these. AVALANCHES ARE ANOTHER RISK. These days ski patrollers are forced to dig out even

the smallest avalanches across ski runs because of the risk of a child being hidden beneath the snow. All of our kids’ helmets are therefore equipped with an avalanche reflector from Recco. All products also have visual reflectors to make children clearly visible in areas around skiing, for example in car parks or near traffic. WHILE WE WERE DEVELOPING THESE PRODUCTS, people told us that it is impossible to

market kids’ gear that provides the quality and protection that we are seeking. At POC, we believe it’s exactly the opposite. POCito Skull

POCito Skull helmet derives from our Skull racing helmets, but with modified properties. An adult racing helmet is designed to provide accident protection at very high speeds, far above the speeds that children can achieve. The children’s helmet therefore uses a softer lining, which provides much better shock absorption at lower speeds and force. The helmet also has adjustable sizing, which allows the child to grow with the helmet. At the back of the goggle clip there is a panel for writing down a parent’s contact information and emergency medical information. Mounted beneath the shell, there is a Recco® avalanche rescue reflector. For maximum visibility in daylight and twilight, the helmet is fluorescent orange and has reflective stickers.
