Sylvia Fedrick, Singer, Talk Show Host and Founder of the Hat & Glove Breakfast.
Though Sylvia is most known as an entertainer who has many passions. Her passion for singing is replicated by her passion for helping others and embracing causes. 6
The Hat & Glove Inspiration Breakfast continues to grow as it enters into the 4th year. We are seeking teens that can embrace encouragement, mentorship, motivation, inspiration and preparation for the real world. Sylvia’s mission is to help develop teens into career minded adults. Application of skills is the best way to determine how well you’ve mastered a particular subject. This is an opportunity for young people to be in the presence of outstanding role models. It is also an opportunity for female teens to hone their verbal communication skills learned in a classroom by engaging in conversation with professionals.
Founder and visionary Sylvia Fedrick, inspired by life experiences, challenges and obstacles in 2009 began her journey. After an elevenyear hiatus from the entertainment industry Sylvia decided to pursue her music career.
6
By Sylvia being in her late 30’s at the time, she was well established in the mortgage industry, but not happy with her career. After going through a failed marriage that prevented her from being involved in activities or career choices that would allow growth, Sylvia realized that she had lost herself spiritually, emotionally and physically. After Sylvia’s divorce in 1998, she decided to follow her heart and pursue her music career once again. Sylvia dealt with oppositions from minimal finances, lack of support from friends and family, to industry professionals telling her that she was to old, not attractive enough and not vocally strong enough. Sylvia really believed that her chances in the music industry had been missed. She faced negativity on a regular basis, but continued to follow her heart and the inner woman that lived inside of her. Sylvia realized that in order to pursue your dreams, you must have faith, tenacity and belief in yourself to survive not just in the entertainment world, but in the world we live in as a whole. After networking with other likeminded individuals, she realized that the majority of people do not get to live “their” American Dreams due to exactly what she was experiencing. Sylvia had a revelation that if she could motivate, uplift and inspire individuals by using herself as a vessel, she could create a support system not just for adults, but for children & teenagers that needed the same formulas.

The Cost of Waiting Children that learn financial principles early in life tend to save more, invest smarter and make better financial decisions than children that learn about money after college, when they have a much slimmer margin of error. I frequently talk with adults that can barely articulate the difference between a stock and a bond or how the banking industry works. We are ill equipping our children for a society that has little mercy on the financially challenged and economically illiterate. Will Medicare and social security be there for our children? Maybe or maybe not. So, we need to help them plan as though they may not be options. We have no idea, really, what programs will be there, so we need to make sure our kids are equipped to deal with life as they find it. With all of the financial turmoil around us, the chances for children to obtain the American dream are becoming slimmer. We can fight back by equipping our kids with the skill sets to manage, appreciate and accumulate assets at the earliest age possible. When your child is born, open up a brokerage account, online discounts are fine and purchase small affordable amounts of shares.
Start off with what you are most familiar with . . .for instance, when my son was born I was very familiar with Proctor & Gamble, Beechnut, Gerber . . .get the picture? Enroll your children in economic and financial literacy courses. Start checking and savings accounts for them early to help them value fiscal responsibility and learn how to manage money. Start building credit for them as soon as possible. All these things will jump start your child’s financial strength.
Cathy Clark, Financial Advisor and Founder of Money University (312) 626-2602, www.moneyuniversity101.com
Choosing to let your child learn about finance later in life may cost them more than you can imagine.

Dr. Joseph West
ScD, Program Director – Block-by-Block North Lawndale Sinai Urban Health Institute (SUHI) Sinai Health System
As an epidemiologist and author, Diabetes has played a significant role in the personal and professional life of Dr. West. The institute through education and outreach is helping to arrest this insidious and for many, very avoidable disease, plaguing communities.
DIABETES AND OBESITY ARE SIGNIFICANT HEALTH PROBLEMS – As a graduate of the Harvard School of Public Health in the area of social epidemiology, it has been my life’s work to focus on interventions and policies that help improve the lives of everyone, but particularly medically underserved populations. Currently, I direct the Sinai Urban Health Institute’s Block by Block Community Diabetes Action Program. Diabetes is a global pandemic that affects more than 285 million people and accounts for 3.8 million deaths per year globally. In the US, the number of people with type 2 diabetes has risen to nearly 26 million (8.3% of the US population). In Illinois, approximately 600,000 persons 18 years of age and older have been diagnosed with diabetes. Nearly 95% of diagnosed diabetes cases are type 2, which is preventable. Despite recent advances in diabetes treatment, an estimated 40% or more of people with diabetes are not in optimal control of their disease and, therefore, are at an increased risk of experiencing diabetes complications. 24
Individuals with diabetes are at increased risk for heart disease, blindness, kidney failure and lower extremity amputations. Approximately 70,000 people each year have a lower-limb amputation resulting from diabetes. Diabetes and its complications occur among Americans of all ages, racial and ethnic groups. The burden of the disease, however, is heavier among the elderly and certain racial and ethnic populations, including African Americans, Hispanics/ Latinos, American Indians, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. The profound impact of diabetes on the public health and healthcare costs underscore the need to discover

My first play Suga’ Foot Blue a profound drama educating on the causes of diabetes My work as an epidemiologist currently focusing on diabetes and passions for theatre and literature motivated me to craft a play that hopefully will help those dealing with diabetes and individuals who are close to someone with the disease. My first play Suga’ Foot Blue a profound drama educating on the causes of diabetes and the consequences, loss of a limb, due to poor self-management. Dottie, the main character, is a former dancer suffering from Type 2 diabetes, and has been informed that she will lose her foot to the disease. The audience is absorbed in Dottie’s, and her family’s struggle with impending loss. It’s a love story that moves and enlightens. The second play is named Gandy Danced. This play looks at the impact of racism, family, working conditions and how they impacted the lives of the men that laid rails across America.

ven during Brandon’s various battles and challenges with his health due to complications from diabetes; he was still very dedicated at work and made it a fun place. Brandon loved God so much until inspired others to fall in love with God too. I think about how Brandon encouraged and inspired so many people with his faith. Brandon loved his Church, he was on the Praise & Worship team and would sing his heart out for the Lord.
In Loving Memory 2012 Honoree for Diabetes BRANDON KEITH JOHNSON September 8, 1972 – November 30, 2011 Brandon was a gifted Singer, Songwriter and Producer that lived life to the fullest. No matter how sad you were, or if things were going the way that you wanted, Brandon had the power to make you laugh and forget about all your troubles.

During the time I co-hosted the radio show “Inspirations With Tiajuana & Sylvia” on WYCA 102.3FM in 2010, Brandon was the production engineer for our show 12midnight1am. After the show would go off, I would stay a while to talk with Brandon & his wife Kim.
We would laugh and talk, next thing I know it was almost 4am in the morning, we’re still cracking jokes and laughing. I will never forget the night that Brandon offered to produced my new CD for me knowing that I was not in a position to compensate him. Brandon told me that he trusted God and wanted to produce my next project and worry about money later. Brandon bought new equipment, contacted his friends in the music industry and told them all about me and the vision he had for my new CD. Brandon was a loyal friend, always kept his word and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that everything was in place for me before he went home to be with the Lord. In Brandon’s physical absence, I want to honor him for being strong, tenacious and a soldier in the army of the Lord. Rest in Peace my friend, I will see you again………………
Minister Denise Denson We are flesh, with all of the hopes, dreams, ambitions and emotions associated with being born of this Earth.
Because we are flesh, we fall short, we fail sometimes and how we choose to deal with those failures is how we see ourselves and that will determine how we will choose to proceed in this life. So, before we proceed, let’s get an understanding of who we are, how we should proceed and why. Before we do anything, we must take the time to remember we are made from Love, being made from Love; therefore all of the aspects of love are how we should proceed. Because of Love Grace abounded toward us with unmerited favor, and we were given power and authority to stand against all this world can attempt to insult us with. We must use the faith, which includes the power of prayer, rooted in the confidence of Love a One that will never die. We are never hopeless nor forsaken because we have a Hope in Glory, so Let’s always
give thanksgiving because that thanksgiving keeps our eyes focused on the source of our strength and is the most powerful weapon that we have. Together with one purpose, Love has given power and authority to us and when we stand together in unity we will see more of the power of Love released, in our lives and the world. The Love that will never die is rooted in us through the prayer of faith and in our confidence in the love of the Word. Thanksgiving is the essence of power; it is acknowledging God for who he is. So in all our getting we must get understanding in order to keep our lives filled with the promises of God and being Filled, have the assurance, that any malady that befalls us will be swiftly met with the faith endowed to us, that the promises of the One that Loves us will restore us.

The Power of the Parenting Father Figure! Wow, as I sit back in front of this computer thinking about the “Power of a Parenting Father Figure” so many thoughts come up! I think about how the impact (both negative and positive) my life has taken by not having my biological father around but how grateful I am that I did have my mother’s boyfriend (Mr. Lee), my uncles, grandfather and male mentors around in my “manhood” development! I remember being a young boy and hearing both my mother and maternal grandmother telling me that because I was the eldest grandchild that I have a big responsibility to show my younger cousins what a strong, smart, focused and determined young male should look like and boy did I answered the call!

I went around all my life trying to be the best example of what a “good guy” looks like: I’ve was a top notch student in school (elementary to graduate school), I was God fearing, I respected my elders and women and more importantly, I showed my self respect! I’ve never been a “follower” for the most part and that’s one of the things that I had to struggle with (being my own person.) Walking your own path takes bravery and not many of us choose to do so.
I remember when I was only 17 years old and one of my best friends (Darnelle) at CVS High School asked me to be his unborn child’s God Dad....I remember at first being in shock that my 17 years old buddy was about to become a father and then thinking “what does a God dad have to do?? Anyway, I answered the call again. What happened thereafter shook my world up! In December of that year (1987), Darnelle’s girlfriend gave birth
to my 1st Godson (Brian) and then, 2 months later (February 1988), Darnelle was killed by a drunk Driver on King Drive, Chgo, IL! Now I would have to truly step up and be a true God dad at the ripe old age of 18!! Well, here I’m in 2012 and I now have 11 Godchildren in total. I guess for some crazy reason, my close friends saw something “Fatherly” about me. As well, I have my own on baby Anayah (age 9) who has made my life worth living as a dad. I didn’t really know what “gut wrenching love” was until Anayah was born (on 8/21/02)..but now I do. I ABSOLUTELY love being a Dad and Goddad, as well as a mentor to well over 50 young people in my 19 years as a Clinical Social Worker. I even have some mentees who are now in their 30’s (which makes me feel old as heck...lol!!)
My “kids” as I sentimentally call them, remind me that a “father” doesn’t have to be the man who impregnated the mother, but that he is the guy who just cares!! I remember how impactful my mom’s boyfriend (Mr. Lee) was in my youthful development and how I, to this day, treat women based on how I saw how he overall treated my mom (lovingly!) Our children (both boys and girls) need positive male influences around in order to have what I call a “balanced perspective!” My mother in her best efforts taught me to be a Phenomenal person but it was the positive male father figures who taught me what a “Phenomenal man” looks like! I have so much more to say in regards to my feeling about children have father figures around but now I have to go and help Anayah with completing her homework, laying out her clothes for school, wrapping her hair up and reading her a bedtime story!
Be well good people! Khalid By Khalid B. Scott, MSW, LCWS, QMHP

Our Youth, Our Responsibility By: Evangelist Michele Davis It is more important today than ever before to be a mentor. What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. Ecclesiastes 1:9. The only thing that is different is that the world is playing for greater keeps. The youth are living in the world as though they are invincible. Life is taken without any regard of the finality of the matter. From my point of view, our youth are acting as though they are playing a role in a movie or video game. We get only one shot at this life. We must teach our youth to value life. It is so precious.
Whatever happened to the days when a child displaying inappropriate behavior or speaking in an ill manner, whatever adult was present, they would correct them? Where is the respect? Have we turned a deaf ear upon our youth? All of the children belong to us all. We the adults must check ourselves. Parents, I plead with you to “Be Parents.” Know where your children are at all times. Know the company that they are keeping. Talk to your children. Plant God, values and morals into their hearts. Be more focused on
us. No man, woman or family is an island. Instead of getting involved, we often retreat behind closed and double locked doors trying to avoid our neighbors. We must be positive examples. We must show our youth that we genuinely care and love them. I have worked with youth for many years. I always refer to the youth I work with as my children. I even had someone ask me once, just how many children do you have? I began to laugh and responded that I gave birth to three children but all of the children I encounter are my children. As an educator, I even tell my students
Our focus is so intent on filling our lives with myriad things; we are forgetting that God gave us the gift of children. Many are too often left to their own devices because they are raising themselves. How is this true? Check out how many minutes/hours per day a youth is being supervised/ entertained by the television and captured by technology (i.e. cell phones, computers, etc.). Technology, without supervision, is taking the place of true human interaction. If we continue with this trend, we will continue the madness of allowing our youth to be desensitized. 38
being the parent and not their friend. Be grounded in the knowledge that You Control and Run Your House and Not the other way around. Parenting doesn’t always feel good. It’s a lot of prayer, persistence and repeating. You may not be your children’s favorite person, but trust me, they will thank you later and 9 out of 10 chances you won’t be sitting somewhere crying about what did you do wrong. It takes “A Village” to raise a child as the ancient African proverb teaches
that they are my children. I look at where they are and begin helping them to be the best that they can be. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a lot of work and many days I have to pray but in my heart they are worth it. It is my hope that more people would take out some time for our youth. Realize the crucial role you play in their futures. 1 Peter says “We are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God.”
