A LO H A AT W O R K As a North Shore lifeguard with the HLA, Kamu Davis gives back to others every time he reports for duty. He also takes his aloha beyond the islands, both with the HLA and through his volunteering with Surfer’s Healing, surf camps for people with autism. He’s seen the restorative power of the ocean – and of aloha – firsthand. And he’s discovered that these experiences are as vital for him as they are for those he protects, serves, and saves. Chelsea Yamase knows her way from mauka (land) to makai (water), having toured the seas with her fisherman father and trekked the ridgelines with her mountaineering mother. Seeing the future from both rocky horizon and fragile reef has given her a deep appreciation for the natural heritage of the islands – and a drive to protect the ecosystems that sustain us. She puts her unique perspective to work as surfer, adventurer, spearfisher, victory gardener, and aloha ambassador.
