four rounds of golf on four breathtaking courses designed by four legends

Legends Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, Jack Nicklaus and Nick Faldo designed four championship golf courses in Central Florida. This is your chance to play all of them. They won 39 majors between them, took that knowledge and designed courses they would love to play…courses so beautiful you will never forget playing them back-to-back. And, LPGA® legend Annika Sorenstam was so impressed, she built the ANNIKA AcademyTM amongst the courses at Reunion® Resort.

‘A’ DESIGNED BY PHILIPPE STARCK

There is a great deal of rivalry in the super yacht world, with owners wanting to outdo each other with the length, design and gizmos of their new super toys. One of the latest to hit the headlines is the 120m (394ft) yacht simply called ‘A’. Owned by 36-year old Russian billionaire Andrei Melnichenko and designed by Philippe Starck, A’s unique shape is reminiscent of a submarine warship - she was built by the same German company that constructed Battleship Bismarck. She is bigger and more expensive than Pelorus, the pride of Russian billionaire, Roman Abramovich, who has since commissioned the even bigger Eclipse 154m (508ft). The aft of the boat supports a three story watch tower with tinted wrap around windows. Due to her knife-like design, A makes almost no splash at 24 knots. And that is fast… A's attributes include six guest suites with moving walls to create four larger suites, each with a stainless-steel whirlpool bath. The master bedroom, located at the top of the watchtower, contains an enormous bed that rotates on a turntable for a panoramic view from each window. A also contains two swimming pools, a helipad, a hovercraft, a garage, over 100 audio speakers, and more than a dozen plasma TV screens, many of which can be mistaken for mirrors. PELORUS

AMALFI, ITALY

BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS

One yacht that’s really turning heads is the 75m (246ft) Anastasia, from Oceanco – a masterpiece in design with an exotic yet contemporary feel. With jaw-dropping accommodation for up to 12 guests (king and queensized beds, private balconies and shower floors created from smoothed pebbles) and with a crew of 20, this massive yacht spreads over seven decks and houses a full gym, disco lounge, aquarium area and of course a high tech Jacuzzi. For those who enjoy the thrill of a sailing yacht, the Maltese Falcon, owned by Silicone Valley supremo, Tom Perkins, and built by Perini Navi, is the most grandiose of all. The 88m (288ft) clipper is the largest sailing yacht in the world and in a breeze her immense DynaRig powers her to record shattering speeds. Designed by the renowned Ken Frievokh, she has three computerized masts that are 20 stories tall, a huge gym, staterooms for 12 guests and space for 24 crew members. The decor, while luxurious, is different from that of most yachts, it is high-tech, metallic and full of surprising contemporary art. Even her tenders, those little motor boats that sail from shore to yacht, are like floating stretch limos. With plenty of water toys for the energetic, there are also lavish and plush public spaces for those who want a more sedate life. Having boarded your yacht, where do you go? It is no surprise that the South of France is the centre of attention in Europe’s summer charter season. St. Tropez, Juan le Pins, Antibes and Monaco all offer sophisticated living and serious night life. However, there are plenty of beautiful little bays along this coastline where you can escape the hustle and bustle. The Amalfi Coast, in Italy, is also a perfect cruising ground for a summer yacht holiday. It is a place of rare and incredible beauty and approaching it by sea

PORTOFINO, ITALY

is the only way to really appreciate it. Who can resist the magic of Portofino or the local colour of Portovenere? The North East coast offers stunning scenery too and where better to enjoy the ultimate romantic weekend than on your yacht moored off the lagoon in Venice? With so many islands to explore, the eastern Mediterranean is the quintessential yachting holiday. However, in addition to Greece and Turkey, Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast is becoming a popular destination with its spectacular, attractive and fascinating cruising grounds. Those heading off on their yacht in the winter months often make for the Caribbean which boasts some of the finest islands on the earth. The beaches are stunning and there is no end of topographic choice, from sandy atolls to mountainous rain forest islands. There are French, Dutch, Spanish, American and British Islands – practically every culture and language of the western world is represented. The world is literally your private playground and there are infinite opportunities for exploration in your yacht – cruise the East Coast of the United States floating from the metropolis to the miraculous, or set sail from Vancouver to Juneau, a cruise in the Pacific North West – few places on earth will make you feel quite so small. If getting completely away from it all is what you are after, the more distant Pacific atolls have no equal for beauty but the time involved getting there keeps them remote, and that is one of their great attractions. Whatever you want from a holiday on a super yacht, one thing is clear – you are floating in a world of unsurpassed luxury where you can be in the hub of a city or in the most remote part of the globe.

EXTREME

AUDIO

BY KEN KESSLER

MOST PEOPLE HAVE NO IDEA HOW GOOD MUSIC CAN SOUND IN THE HOME. BUT IF ONE PRE-REQUISITE IS MET BY THE CUSTOMER - AN OVERPOWERING PASSION FOR MUSIC – THERE IS ONLY ONE ROUTE TO MUSICAL NIRVANA, AND THAT IS THROUGH A SERIOUS HI-FI SYSTEM, WHICH MEANS BOLD LOUDSPEAKERS.

Why? Because only large speakers can move enough air to reproduce the bass notes that form the foundation of music. And only top quality loudspeakers can reproduce sound so realistically that you’d swear the performers were in the room. It started with the Italians in the early 1980s. After decades of a global obsession with cubist wooden speaker boxes, Sonus Faber introduced hand-finished loudspeakers with curved edges, using solid timber instead of veneers – staves of Italian walnut polished to violin-making standards. Sonus Faber’s vision has culminated in the glorious Stradivari, wide but not deep, almost a panel. Its woods are hand-polished and matched for visual symmetry, the grille a series of threads resembling violin strings. The sound? Angelic. Another Italian speaker with a new spin on boxes is Opera’s elegant Caruso, another example of how northern Italians use fine woods. The build quality and styling are reminiscent of vintage Riva or Chris-Craft speedboats, the imposing profile permitting the drive units to fire sound to the sides, creating a vast stage.

KEF’S ALL-ALUMINIUM MUON SPEAKER, WITH DESIGNER ROSS LOVEGROVE

HOW TO CHOOSE AMONG SUCH SONIC RICHES? FOR THE VACILLATING MUSIC LOVER, THE PROCEDURE IS SIMPLE: FIND A HI-FI EMPORIUM WITH A PROPER SHOW ROOM, MAKE AN APPOINTMENT FOR A PRIVATE DEMONSTRATION AND BRING ALONG A MUCH-LOVED LP, CD, OR EVEN AN IPOD. WHAT YOU NEED TO DO IS REPLICATE THE CONDITIONS IN WHICH YOU NORMALLY ENJOY THE MUSIC OF YOUR CHOICE. Across the channel, KEF of England hired world-famous designer Ross Lovegrove, whose work has shaped products from TAGHeuer to Apple computers, to fashion one of the most adventurous speakers yet. The curvaceous Muon is made from 6ft tall aluminium castings, limited in production to 100 pairs and resembling modern sculpture rather than mere audio equipment. Wilson Audio, one of the most accommodating of brands, realised that there was nothing to stop them finishing their speakers in any colour the client desired. And why not? With speakers standing nearly 2m tall and more akin to a 2000lb gorilla than the proverbial 600lb ape, they dominate the listening area.

Wilson installed a paint booth at the factory so advanced that it can be used to spray-paint an automobile. Which gave Wilson another idea: why not offer the customer the same paints as in the automotive palette? If you like, sir, your Wilson Alexandrias can be painted to match your Aston-Martin. And finally a good speaker system needs to do only one thing: if it transports you to the venue where the music was recorded, if it is so realistic and convincing that you’d swear you were hearing it live, then you’ve learned what extreme audio equipment can do.

Nick and Christian Candy have already captivated the design world with their breathtaking interiors, from luxury city living to super yachts. Now the brothers and their Knightsbridge-based team at Candy & Candy have propelled aircraft interior design into another dimension altogether. The company has designed interiors for a Global Express XRS and a Challenger 605 aircraft, two jets each with differing requirements, both reflecting the essentials for 21st century luxury travel. Nick explains: “Each plane differs in size and purpose, thus we wanted each to reflect a different style. The Challenger aircraft is a short-haul jet and has a softer mood and finish. The Global aircraft is a dynamic long-haul jet and has an edgier styling.” “The materials used in the execution of each design are true to Candy & Candy standards, incorporating fine and exclusive finishes. The leathers are pearlised, silks are cut into exciting patterns and carbon fibre has been used to detail fine macassar joinery. Almond gold and smoked nickel metals protect and accent throughout.” With safety paramount, creating a luxury environment without compromising Candy & Candy’s high standards proved an exacting task, requiring meticulous planning and sourcing of materials. “Crash testing and burn resistance are fundamental in the design of these aircraft and each item has to meet strict aviation standards and requirements,” says Nick. “Therefore, the finishes and any fixed items are sent for testing to ensure they pass. Weight is another consideration. Carbon fibre and honeycomb substratas are used wherever possible, marble and stone is veneered, not solid, and glassware is not crystal.” But, as expected, the designers have surpassed themselves. They have succeeded in producing an environment that breaks away from the classic jet interior, instead creating a space and ambiance that is an extension of the same luxury lifestyle enjoyed at home.

The Candy brothers are looking forward to taking delivery of their new Challenger 605 jet. With a business that is global, Nick and Christian decided that a private jet was by far the superior method to travel, allowing clients to be conveyed in style – and with speed – to anywhere in the world. And, of course, the brothers plan to use the aircraft for their own pleasure and leisure: the means to be able to jet off to international hotspots whenever the mood takes them without having to go through the usual commercial airport rigmarole is worth its weight in gold. The jet’s bespoke design, a concept that also serves as a showcase for potential purchasers, represents international travel in the 21st century, allowing individuals with ultra busy schedules to conduct their business in congenial and sophisticated surroundings while airborne. To this end, the fuselage is divided into two sections to give a flexible living room area that transforms into a boardroom plus a forward seating configuration, a kitchen and bathroom. In total, the jet comfortably seats up to 10 guests and sleeps four. Decorated in a palette of cool greys, slate blues and off-whites, matched with plush leather, grey cocobolo and angular walnut veneers, it is the pinnacle of chic. Artworks by well-known artists are incorporated into the panelling by leading fabric couturiers and deep pile carpeting is shaved into a sleek pattern. experience

Their most ambitious project to date is designing the interiors at One Hyde Park which, when completed in 2010, is expected to become one of the most, if not the most, prestigious addresses in the capital.

Candy & Candy’s concept design for the Global Express XRS aircraft and that of its new Challenger 605 aircraft, can be modified to incorporate specific unique features, allowing clients their own stamp of exclusivity. “These aircraft can, of course, be repeated as an exact copy for any further interested parties,” Nick says. “Alternatively, Candy & Candy would happily revise each design or produce an entirely new concept tailored to an individual’s needs or desires. The sky, in this case, is no limit!” Meanwhile, Candy & Candy have been busy cementing their already formidable reputation working alongside internationally prominent architectural practices in creating iconic residential developments in London. One of the latest projects to be completed, a boutique development of six apartments at Chesham Place in elegant Belgravia, has been in collaboration with Foster

& Partners. Each apartment’s interior has been totally designed by Candy & Candy and tailor-made to suit residents’ individual requirements. They contain the very latest innovations in technology, such as computerised wardrobe selectors, ‘intelligent’ 3D vanity mirrors, audio-visual curtaining and high-tech security systems. However, their most ambitious project to date is designing the interiors at One Hyde Park. The building, designed by the Richard Rogers Partnership, is an ultra-modern development consisting of four glass pavilions containing exclusive boutiques and 80 state-ofthe-art apartments rumoured to cost £25 million each. Interior design is firmly under wraps, but since previous Candy & Candy projects have featured elements such as time-delay mirrors, leather floors, iris recognition locks and adjustable-depth swimming pools, it is conceivable that similar innovations may be a must-have at One Hyde Park too.

Ultimate

Escapes BY SUSAN KIME

NO MATTER HOW CAPRICIOUS THE GLOBAL ECONOMY RIDE HAS BECOME, JIM TOUSIGNANT, 48, CEO AND FOUNDER OF ULTIMATE ESCAPES, CAN HANDLE IT. HE IS ONE OF THE FEW IMPASSIONED AND INTUITIVE, YET EXTREMELY LOGICAL, THINKERS WHOSE TRACK RECORD IN CREATING SOMETHING FROM NOTHING IS UNRIVALLED IN THE SHARED RESIDENCE INDUSTRY. Ultimate Escapes is now the second largest Destination Club in the world, with over 1300 members and 150 global properties in 50 global locations. It offers more destinations and membership plans than any other destination club. It also has flexible access to a collection of almost 200 four and five star luxury hotels in dozens of major cities in the US, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, South America and Central America. It has grown exponentially since it was founded only four years ago. But how it was originally conceived relates in a unique way to the determined nature and steady vision of its founder.

30

experience

“While I was the Managing Director of Business Developement at Morgan Stanley in 2001,” Jim recounts, “ I was quite familiar with the theory of shared asset solutions, and I’d heard of the application of this idea to high end homes in great locations and thought it was intriguing. I wondered how it might work on a larger scale, with family and friends taking great vacations, in million dollar homes, but…. I had banking business to attend to. Then, September 11th hit. And, like many survivors of the attack, that day changed my life.” If that kind of trauma does nothing else, it helps you reorder your life quickly. If Providence gives you another chance, you want to take advantage fully! After all, in Chinese, the word 'crisis' is composed of two characters: one represents danger and one represents opportunity.”

I WANTED TO DEDICATE MY LIFE TO HELPING OTHERS ENJOY LIFE. IT TOOK A FEW YEARS, BUT THAT WAS THE BEGINNING OF HOW I SWITCHED GEARS SO DRASTICALLY, AND FOUNDED ULTIMATE.

experience

31

Doing what’s right for the members is the major thrust of Jim’s leadership style and is the fuel that keeps Ultimate running ahead of the curve. Last year, he saw an exceptional opportunity to merge with Private Escapes, another club with a stellar reputation. Merging the two companies took almost a year, it was accomplished in 2008, bringing the membership levels and home access ratios to where they are now.

The growth of Ultimate from an idea in Jim’s head, to the second largest destination Club in the world, is one that uniquely reflects Jim’s foresight and empathy in times of industry crisis. When Tanner & Haley, the first and most well-known club in the industry, bankrupted in July of 2006, Ultimate, under Jim’s direction, bought the assets and offered the members, all 800 of them, a chance to join Ultimate. As he tells it, over 600 joined immediately, all feeling he had saved the day. “ I was perceived as the Knight In Shining Armour,” Jim said, “ but I really just wanted to do what was right. It was a win-win for us: we acquired great real estate assets and the Tanner & Haley members could join our club.”

Jim will say, the success of his club is defined by more than just its 18 membership levels (Ultimate has the most varied pricing ranging from $70,000 to $450,000) and access to homes. It is also defined by the varying services provided by Ultimate’s strategic partners, including Luggage Express, To Escape To, Flexjet, Bruce World of Travel, University College of London and American Express. Recently, Ultimate created a strategic partnership with FirstAgain, an online consumer lender that caters to individuals with excellent credit. In this new partnership, FirstAgain will provide their unsecured AnythingLoan to prospective members with excellent credit to cover the costs of club memberships and dues payments. Jim has admitted that 2008 has been one of the most exciting, yet challenging, years on record. “ The US economy,” he said recently, “ has already begun to negatively impact many businesses and families. But, as many of us are aware, there are also signs of hope and optimism that our country will begin to solve some difficult problems, and will also provide great opportunities as our economy begins to recover in 2009. As many of us know from history and our own experiences, the best personal and financial opportunities generally arise during the most difficult times. And it is usually in the most difficult times that we appreciate more than ever the importance of family and friends - the things in life that matter most. At Ultimate, we provide the environments – the homes, the experiences - that will provide the best memories, and those will in turn provide the greatest legacies families can bestow. The economy is temporal, but memories are forever.” www.ultimateescapes.com

A Global Express business jet effectively set a new flight-speed world record, on November 23, 2008, for circumnavigating the globe over both the North and South Poles in 52 hours and 32 minutes. The aircraft, owned by TAG Aeronautics and operated by TAG Aviation Europe, flew at average speeds of over 800 km/h and covered over 22,000 nautical miles. The previous record, held for over three decades, was set by Pan Am in a Boeing 747SP and took 54 hours and seven minutes to complete. The record was set by TAG TransPolar08, a Swiss-based, multi-national private endeavor established to tackle this goal.

CAPTAIN AZIZ OJJEH PILOTED THE FIRST AND LAST LEGS OF THE FLIGHT TO QUALIFY FOR THE FAI RECORD.

The team included five pilots, an in-flight coordinator, a flight engineer, and an official observer from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), which has registered the record attempt pending final ratification. The Global Express jet took-off from the TAG Farnborough Airport on Friday, November 21, 2008, at 10:05.54 am (GMT). After crossing the North Pole, it made successful stopovers at Whitehorse, Canada; Majuro, Marshall Islands; Christchurch, New Zealand; Punta Arenas, Chile; and Sal, Cape Verde, to finally return to Farnborough on Sunday, November 23, 2008. TAG Aviation Europe flight planning and ground operations teams in the UK and Geneva handled all the flight logistics.

“I’ve been waiting since 1984 for the right business aircraft to beat this record,” said Aziz Ojjeh, captain of the flight team and Vice President of TAG Group and its subsidiary TAG Aeronautics. The aircraft performed flawlessly during the flight and was supported every step of the way by Bombardier’s dedicated support staff, with field service representatives on the ground helping turn the aircraft around in less that 30 minutes at each stop. Bombardier’s Customer Response Center (CRC) was also on high alert throughout the flight, ready to step in at any moment. “We are proud to have played an integral part in the TransPolar08 team’s effort to break the record. Our experienced and committed team of professionals is always ready, this is a great example of aircraft reliability and proven worldwide support.” said James Hoblyn, president, Bombardier customer services and specialized and amphibious aircraft.

The TAG TransPolar08 team’s record setting attempt on the Global Express jet is one of a number of world record attempts by Bombardier customers and their aircraft. CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY SPOTLIGHT

FLEXJET HELPING OWNERS REDUCE THEIR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT. A Balanced Approach to Carbon Offsets

ClimateCare

Bombardier’s fractional ownership program is always looking at ways to introduce new and innovative offerings that respond to the needs of their owners. Knowing that their customers are concerned about the environment and in conjunction with Bombardier’s overall approach to corporate responsibility, Flexjet has introduced a carbon offset program that lets Flexjet aircraft owners compensate for their aircraft’s carbon impact. Owners now have a convenient way to balance the carbon emissions from their travels by offsetting them with emission reductions from projects around the globe. Flexjet, in partnership with JPMorgan ClimateCare, a world-leading carbon offset provider, now offers owners the option to offset their jet’s CO2 emissions each time they fly. Flexjet has calculated the average CO2 emissions for all of its Learjet and Challenger aircraft. For owners who opt to offset the emissions from each flight, Flexjet will add a per hour fee sufficient to fund activities that generate an equal reduction in emissions. These offset funds will be used to pay for projects in the United States and around the world that both reduce carbon emissions and distribute renewable, sustainable technology.

After extensive research, Flexjet concluded that ClimateCare offers the highest standards for choosing, measuring and reporting on its programs to balance carbon emissions. “We’re proud to offer the ClimateCare option to our aircraft owners,” says Flexjet President Michael McQuay. “We know many of our owners have been seeking ways to balance their impact and will embrace this program.” ClimateCare, a division of JPMorgan’s environmental markets group, funds projects that reduce greenhouse gases such as CO2. The organisation invests in a global portfolio of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects, which all adhere to key principles such as additionality and permanence. Additionality ensures that a project would not have gone forward without carbon offset funding, while permanence ensures that any reductions from a project have a lasting impact. Projects are closely monitored and independently verified under leading international standards to ensure that targets are achieved. Many of these projects also bring significant health and welfare benefits to the participating individuals and communities.

CERTAINLY, PRIVATE JETS MAKE A STATEMENT. OURS SAY, “I’VE GOT WORK TO DO.”

And, equally importantly, they do not say, “I’m a well-heeled jet-setter who spends money frivolously.” This is not a subtle distinction—it’s a profoundly different point of view. The truth is that for many individuals and corporations, a jet makes sound business sense. Of course, when compared against commercial first-class seats, the price is higher. But there are other costs to consider: inflexible schedules, time spent driving to major airports, getting through security, waiting to board and sitting on the tarmac. Now add these lost hours to the price of your airline ticket to get a true assessment of the cost difference. By contrast, Flexjet* creates the one thing you need more of: time. At Flexjet, we provide private jet fractional ownership, whole aircraft ownership and management, and jet card† solutions. So we politely request that you ignore the stereotypes, take a deep breath and objectively consider the impact this could have on your business and your lifestyle. experience

FLAMES OF PARIS – CREATED IN 1937, THIS BALLET EXISTS ONLY IN THE BOLSHOI REPERTOIRE.

Bolshoi is Russian for “Big” or “Grand” and with 240 dancers, the Bolshoi Ballet is the largest company in the world. The majority of its dancers are graduates of the Moscow Academy of Classic Ballet – one of the oldest and most prominent ballet schools in Russia. In 1956, Soviet authorities sent the Bolshoi Ballet to London. Since that first tour abroad, the world has been able to discover the company’s unique style, combining true virtuosity with incredible stage presence. Galina Ulanova, who performed Juliet and Giselle on this tour, became a symbol of Russian romanticism in ballet. The Bolshoi Ballet’s twentieth-century history roster is a veritable who’s who of dance, including Vladimir Vassiliev and Maya Plisetskaya, Ekaterina Maximova and Nikolay Fadeechev, Natalia Bessmertnova, Maris Liepa, Liudmila Semeniaka and Irek Mukhamedov.

For more than 30 years, Yury Grigorovitch was the powerful leader of the Bolshoi Ballet company. His legacy lives on as the Bolshoi maintains nine productions in its repertoire that were either staged or revised by Grigorovitch, including such masterpieces as “Spartacus” and “Legend of Love”. The fall of the Soviet Union resulted in a dramatic transition for the Bolshoi, and its cultural importance remained highly valued by the new Russian government. Through all its tours, the Bolshoi Ballet has managed to show the entire world that Russian people have a heart and soul and a natural taste for beauty. You need not speak the language or be a true connoisseur to admire and understand the art of the Bolshoi. For some unexplainable reason, even with all the daily changes in our lives, ballets created in the XIX century, such as “Bayadere” or “Swan Lake”, still capture our hearts. experience

SPARTACUS – ORIGINALLY STAGED BY YURY GRIGOROVITCH, LEADER OF THE BOLSHOI FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS.

48

experience

FOR MORE THAN 150 YEARS, THE BOLSHOI BALLET HAS PERFORMED ON THE SPLENDID BOLSHOI THEATRE STAGE,

BUILT IN 1856 BY ARCHITECT ALBERT KAVOS. The Bolshoi’s main goal is to preserve classical ballet. A rare example of repertory theatre, the company holds annual performances of “Giselle”, “The Nutcracker”, “Sleeping Beauty”, “Swan Lake”, “Don Quixote”, “Bayadere” and “Chopiniana”. But for General Director Anatoly Iksanov, it is very important to keep a fine balance between legacy and new creation. In the past, the company staged a number of unique titles including “Queen of Spades”, created for the Bolshoi by French choreographer Roland Petit on Tchaikovsky’s 6th symphony. The current artistic director, Aleksei Ratmansky, is responsible for the stage revival of Chostakovitch’s ballets “Bright stream” and “Bolt”, both forbidden in the 1930’s by Stalin. RussianAmerican dancer and choreographer Yuri Posokhov staged a new version of Prokofiev’s “Cinderella” for the Bolshoi, while more recently, Moldovian choreographer Radu Poklitaru, together with British director Declan Donnelan, produced a new version of “Romeo and Juliet”. Contemporary choreographers such as John Neumeier and Pier Lacotte have also worked with the company and the Bolshoi also acquired several Balanchine ballets. For more than 150 years, the Bolshoi Ballet has performed on the splendid Bolshoi Theatre stage. This historical stage has undergone major reconstruction, and the company now performs on the New Stage of the Bolshoi Theatre and rarely presents more than two premieres per year. In its current season, new works include two one-act ballets; “Russian Seasons” by Aleksei Ratmansky; and “Grand pas Paquita” reconstructed by the Bolshoi Ballet’s 2009 artistic director, Yuri Burlaka. In the spring, “Coppelia” will be staged according to the historical notations made by Sergei Vikharev. The Bolshoi company’s size and the variety of its repertoire are impressive, however the quality of its performances are what’s most important. When the company goes on tour, there are often 150-200 people including ballet dancers and fine musicians from the Bolshoi Orchestra. From more than 24 titles contained in the Bolshoi’s repertoire, only one ballet is performed with recorded sound: “In the Upper Room” by Twyla Tharp, which uses electronic music composed by Philip Glass. Almost all the Bolshoi sets and costumes are made by the theatre’s own workshops and in productions like “Corsaire” one can see more than 400 elaborate period costumes. While marvelling at the work of the Bolshoi craftsmen, the main attraction is definitely the dancers. Prima Ballerina Svetlana Zakharova, the lead in many classical ballets, can be seen quite often at La Scala or the New National Ballet in Tokyo. However, Nikolai Tsiskaridse – today’s most popular Russian dancer – can be seen only in the Bolshoi. Ballet lovers will make it a point to attend performances of young stars such as Ivan Vassiliev and Natalia Osipova. She is barely 20, he is just 19 – but New York City greeted the duo with a standing ovation. With 233 years of glorious history each Bolshoi Ballet performance is a unique experience that can never be repeated.

When most people think business jet, the words Learjet aircraft comes to mind. With a long history of innovation and design originating with its namesake, Bill Lear, the Learjet brand and Learjet aircraft are recognized worldwide as status symbols for speed, performance and agility. In 1963 the Learjet 23 aircraft revolutionized business jet travel, now the new Learjet 85 aircraft is poised to start the modern revolution of the 21st century jet. The Learjet 85 aircraft retains the key elements that give Learjet aircraft their distinctive ramp appeal: wrap-around windshield; T-tail; and delta fins, while introducing next generation performance, comfort and technology to the legendary business jet family. Committed to the environment, the aircraft’s all new Pratt & Whitney Canada engines will provide optimum performance and operating economics while maintaining low noise and emission levels. Featuring a high cruise speed of up to Mach 0.82** and a range of up to 3,000 nautical miles**, the Learjet 85 aircraft will fly coast to coast in North America and from London, England, will be able to reach parts of North America, Africa, the Middle East and Russia. The new jet’s all-composite design also means that Bombardier Aerospace engineers can develop a more aerodynamic aircraft shape and can maximize the fuselage cabin volume (665 ft3) to offer one of the largest cabins among all midsize aircraft currently in production.

THE AIRCRAFT FEATURES A FULL-SERVICE GALLEY, FULL LAVATORY, AND THREE STORAGE CLOSETS

Passengers will benefit from a stand-up cabin that is designed to maximize usable volume, storage and ergonomic comfort as well as offer superior productivity for up to eight. Key features include sculpted sidewalls with integrated stowage areas, large open space between seats to allow for more mobility and leg room, space for armrests on each side of the seats and additional handy storage area throughout the cabin. The seats were specially designed to offer optimum comfort and practicality. All seats fully recline to a horizontally flat position, allowing for up to four single beds in the eight seat cabin configuration. The integrated armrests retract into the seat backs, giving occupants the choice to occupy a wider sitting area, and the pedestals each have a stowage drawer that opens into the aisle for easy access. The minimal drop aisle, only three and half inches, maximizes headroom without creating a trench effect and the large windows increase the amount of natural light in the cabin and enhance passenger viewing capability. The aircraft also features a full-service galley, full lavatory, and three storage closets. With many aircraft, the interior designers are limited to the cabin and drop their pencils at the cockpit’s threshold. This is not the case with the Learjet 85 aircraft. The latest in technological advancements from Rockwell Collins – the new Pro Line Fusion avionics suite – is paired with superior design aesthetics to create a flight control environment whose layout and styling are such that there is a seamless flow throughout the aircraft’s interior. Designed with customer input throughout, the Learjet 85 aircraft has all the right stuff to make it the clear choice if you’re shopping for a midsize jet.

The Origins of

St Andrews

experience

When you fly to St Andrews you may not want to leave. For lovers of the royal and ancient game the home of golf is the world’s premier destination, combining an unmatched sense of history with all the modern traveller could hope for. A first highlight is the descent into Leuchars. Swooping down towards the Royal Air Force base on the northern shores of the Eden Estuary gives a glorious view of St Andrews Links, the most renowned golfing landscape in the world with the Old Course at its heart. Appropriately, the designer of the Old Course is said to be Mother Nature herself. Who else could have provided so many idiosyncrasies, so many changes of perspective, and so many memorable details? But it is the hand of man that has transformed a rugged wilderness into one of sport’s most famous arenas. Landmarks such as Swilcan Bridge and Hell Bunker, the great double greens and the tenderly cared for fairways with their exquisite turf all point to an expertise and devotion that has taken years to perfect. All other golf courses are descended from the Old Course, but none can ever truly be compared to it.

St Andrews first hosted The Open in 1873, and the tournament will return to the Old Course for the 28th time in 2010. For all its antiquity, the Old Course remains a true test of golf for today’s best players and has provided the backdrop for some of golf’s most memorable moments. Following the victory of the great Bobby Jones in 1927, the title has travelled the globe. The Claret Jug has left St Andrews to find a home in America, Australia, Africa and Europe. Jack Nicklaus said that winning in St Andrews was ‘my greatest dream come true.’ Tiger Woods, one of an elite band of five men to have won The Open twice at the Home of Golf, echoed this when he said: ‘To win at St Andrews is the ultimate.’ While remaining a key part of Scotland’s culture, the Old Course now has a place in the world’s heritage. Film stars, sports celebrities, presidents and prime ministers – many famous people from all walks of life have come to St Andrews eager and willing to go through the pleasurable ordeal of taking their place on the first tee, fulfilling a lifelong ambition and following in the footsteps of their golfing heroes.

Inspirational, completely original and hugely rewarding, the Old Course never plays the same way twice. Open all year round, it is the ultimate golfing addiction.

ST ANDREWS OLD COURSE & TOWN

The Old Course is not alone – it is one of a family of six: five 18 hole courses, three of which are well over 100 years old, and one 9 hole course. There are two luxurious and spacious clubhouses: the Links Clubhouse serving the Old, New and Jubilee Courses; and the Eden Clubhouse, by the Eden, Strathtyrum and Balgove Courses. St Andrews Links Golf Practice Centre and Golf Academy is a comprehensive facility which includes a 51-bay driving range and a short game area specially designed for links golf. The academy combines traditional coaching and state of the art technology to provide tuition for golfers of all levels of ability. There is also a custom fit studio, where playing equipment can be fine tuned to suit individual requirements. response to his inspirations is to make something entirely unique. This is a thoughtfully constructed challenge all the way round. From the artfully constructed tee complexes, which feature five tees for all levels of ability, the holes often appear intimidating but check the course guide and you will see that in fact the landing areas are wide and welcoming.

The greens are another matter.

Designed by leading Scottish course architect David McLay Kidd, The Castle Course sits on 220 acres of land, has more than one mile of waterfront and embraces the rugged Scottish shoreline to provide a unique and exciting test.

Among the earliest creations of the design team, the greens are worlds in themselves. Large and multi-layered, these are unforgettable challenges that might bring forth laughter and despair in equal measure. You may often find yourself having to aim away from the pins in order to let the green contours gather the ball in towards the hole.

Visitors will see glimpses of the familiar St Andrews Links courses here, but mediated through the vision of a modern master. There may also be suggestions of great golfing landscapes in other parts of Scotland, Ireland or the USA. Kidd is a global traveller whose

The circular clubhouse, set above the place where the ninth and eighteenth greens meet in a dramatic coupling, is a fitting place to relive your experiences on what is already one of the most talked about courses in the world.

NICE

THE STRETCH OF COAST IS FULL OF STUNNING VILLAS WITH SEA VIEWS, SOME WITH THEIR OWN BEACH ACCESS, OTHERS DOTTED DISCREETLY AMONG THE HILLS. Owning a property on the French Riviera is one of life’s ultimate luxuries. The relaxed lifestyle, the glamorous festivals and the vivid colours that inspired artists like Monet, Matisse and Renoir have made the Cote d’Azur one of Europe’s most upmarket and exclusive holiday destinations. The British have had a long association with the area, as wealthy Victorians used to spend their winter here, attracted by the mild climate, but it has since become a year-round destination. There is plenty to do whatever the season. You can explore the coast, cities, Medieval villages, or the mountains. You can combine an evening at the Casino in Monte Carlo with a few quiet days on the beach in Saint Tropez, visit the Monaco Grand Prix or the Cannes Film Festival or just relax with friends at your villa. The French Riviera is also a useful stopping-off point for those travelling to and from other parts of Europe, making it ideal for rental properties. Being able to arrive by private jet makes staying in the area even more idyllic. You don’t have to worry about check-in queues, security hold-ups or baggage delays. In many cases, you can sweep through the airport and be in your holiday villa within half an hour of touch-down – giving you more time to spend around the pool, dining on the terrace or just enjoying those spectacular views. Due to the number of VIP visitors it receives, it’s no surprise that the area is superbly-served with private jet-friendly airports: for example, there is the Nice Cote d’Azur airport just outside Nice and around 25 minutes drive from Cannes. Mandelieu private airport is just 15 minutes from Cannes, and the Aeroport International Saint Tropez - Aeroport de La Mole is 18km South West of Saint Tropez. John Taylor has a wealth of experience in selling and renting properties on the Cote d’Azur, having operated in the region since 1864. John Taylor was a Victorian who started working in Cannes as a gardener at the age of 20. He gradually built up a knowledge of the region and a relationship with the British aristocracy. The company now has several offices in France and also operates in Barcelona, Milan, Paris and Abu Dabi. Over the years the comnpany’s client list has read like a Who’s Who. They are far too discreet to give away current celebrity names on their books, but past clients have included King Edward VII, Gladstone, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Gregory Peck, Henry Fonda, Brigitte Bardot, Charles Aznavour, King Fahd of Saudi Arabia, Aristotle Onassis, Akram Ojjeh, Prince Aga Khan and Eddie Barclay! “We pride ourselves on our personal service,” says Sylvain Boichut, sales director. “We spend a lot of time getting to know our clients and finding out what they really want. We get a lot of repeat business as clients recommend us to friends or relations. On the propertymanagement and rental side, we sometimes deal with several generations of the same family. “Our clients tend to be very well-travelled people who have stayed in the most amazing places in the world so they are very discerning. They choose France for the gastronomy, museums and the way of life. They like to come here to relax and meet up with friends.” Whereas buyers used to be nearly all from the UK, the Internet and economic changes have helped open up the market to Russia and the Middle East so some properties are snapped up very quickly, warns Sylvain Boichut. “Recently a prospective purchaser made an appointment to view a property on the Monday but was pipped to the post by another buyer who came over at the weekend by private plane!” For more information, for sale, for rent and for property management:

“WE COULDN’T ESCAPE THE BRUTAL CONCLUSION THAT – IN OUR WORLD TODAY – SOME LIVES ARE SEEN AS WORTH SAVING AND OTHERS ARE NOT. WE SAID TO OURSELVES: THIS CAN’T BE TRUE. BUT IF IT IS TRUE, IT DESERVES TO BE THE PRIORITY OF OUR GIVING.”

B

ill and Melinda Gates’ belief that “every human life has an equal value” is the guiding principle of the Foundation they set up in 2000 to help people lead better lives throughout the world. Bill Gates, creator of Microsoft and until recently the richest man in the world, has been criticised for his ruthless domination of the global computer industry and his confrontational style of management. So the couple’s pledge to give away most of their $46 billion wealth took the world by surprise. However, Melinda points out that they had always planned to do this later in life, but learning about sickness and poverty in undeveloped countries was the catalyst that made them bring these plans forward. Inspired by Andrew Carnegie’s philosophy that “he who dies rich dies disgraced,” they created the Foundation to support initiatives, primarily in the areas of global health, development and education.

66

experience

One of the things that prompted the decision was an article Bill and Melinda read about the millions of children who were dying every year in the poorest countries from diseases that were long ago eliminated in wealthier countries. “One disease we had never even heard of – rotavirus – was killing literally half a million kids each year,” Bill recalls. “We thought: That’s got to be a typo. If a single disease was killing that many kids we would have heard about it, because it would have been front page news. But it wasn’t a typo. Bill was born in 1955 in Seattle, Washington, a middle child with two sisters. His father was a corporate lawyer and his mother was a teacher. At school he met fellow student Paul Allen, with whom he would eventually found Microsoft. By the age of 17, he had sold his first computer program, a timetabling system for his high school, for $4200. He went on to Harvard University but dropped out after two years to pursue his career in software development. He was always ambitious, telling his university teachers that he would be a millionaire by the age of 30. In fact he became a billionaire at the age of 31! In 1975 he and Allen founded Microsoft to market their version of BASIC called Microsoft BASIC. He met his wife Melinda French in 1987 at a Microsoft press event in Manhattan when she was working for the company. They were married on New Years Day in 1994 and have three children. Melinda, who grew up in Dallas, the daughter of an aerospace engineer, joined Microsoft as a manager in 1987 and developed products including Encarta, Expedia and Cinemania.

A driven and organised achiever, she plays an equal role in the Foundation, and says, “The Foundation is not about generosity, it’s about helping to change people’s lives.”

They have also worked with the International Centre for Research on Women and the International Food Policy and Research Institute to improve the lives of women agricultural workers in African countries.

Last year alone the Foundation gave $2,011,675 in grants to help health, development and education programmes. These included funding clinical trials of a vaccine for malaria called RTS-S, which research suggests can provide protection for up to four years. They also gave $405 million in TB grants. They have helped finance a vaccine for pneumonia that could reduce all African deaths by 15%, and have launched a financing scheme, UNITAID, to help poorer countries fund immunisation.

A significant sum has also been given to research insurance schemes that would benefit people in third world countries, where a sudden sickness or death, or a natural disaster, can otherwise plunge people into poverty. New research projects have also been put in place to analyse the economic progress in different African countries, looking at the impact of health on economic growth, banking systems and trade policies.

Other grants have gone to clinical trials for AIDS prevention, and although these have not yet proved successful, Bill Gates takes a sanguine view. “Scientific research and development is a high risk endeavour. Negative results are part of the process. When we discover what doesn’t work, we gain scientific knowledge that will eventually help us learn what does work.” They are currently funding more research and new drug trials.

As well as health and development issues, the Foundation aims to help improve education and communication through computers. Its global libraries programme helps countries install new computers connected to the Internet in their libraries, and trains librarians to help the users get the most out of the technology. The programme started with projects in Chile and Mexico and has now extended to several East European countries. In Latvia, libraries are piloting an e-signature scheme allowing government forms to be filled out online.

Aside from clinical trials, some of the money goes to provide better sanitation and health education in undeveloped countries. Last year the Foundation made a grant to the Water and Sanitation Program, which aims not only to supply public toilets in undeveloped countries, but also to educate people on the need to use them in order to prevent diseases.

The Foundation takes a scientific approach to the projects, continually assessing and re-assessing how the money is being spent and the impact it is making. The aim is not so much to hand out cash as to help people to help themselves. Bill and Melinda Gates have already changed the world using technology – now they aim to do so again, but this time through philanthropy. experience

But it’s more than just the amount of terrain that’s impressive; it’s the sheer variety that makes skiing in Whistler an experience that’s earned the resort a number one ranking 12 years running in Skiing Magazine. From steeps, chutes and treed runs to alpine bowls, moguls or perfectly groomed corduroy – you’ll find it, and lots of it, on the slopes of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains. Private guiding services or lessons are a great option because they not only help you to adapt to Whistler’s conditions and immense terrain, but also give you a local’s insight into secret sweet spots and those hidden caches of powder. Not that you’ll need much help finding powder. Whistler is also blessed with North America’s longest, and most powder-laden, ski season.

Still, you can’t rest on your laurels if you want to stay ahead of the competition. So this year the resort has set a couple more records with the opening of the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola that will link together the peaks of Whistler Blackcomb’s two mountains. The new PEAK 2 PEAK will lay claim to the longest unsupported lift span in the world at 3.024 kilometers /1.88 miles and the highest lift of its kind at 435 meters /1,427 feet. It’s an engineering marvel that’s meant to give visitors more and faster access to that award-winning alpine terrain. And hard as it is to believe, the ski hills are only the proverbial tip of the iceberg when it comes to offering adventure that goes beyond the ordinary. With literally hundreds of miles of pristine backcountry surrounding the Whistler area, local tour operators have come up with a slew of one-of-a-kind activities that range from flying over frigid whitewater on a zipline high in the forest’s canopy, to ice fishing, glacier hikes and excursions by snowshoe, cross country skis or snowmobile. Heli-skiing has also become one of the area’s most popular attractions, as many want to get away from the resort proper and be transported to what amounts to a private mountain of your own, completely untracked, for you and a group of select friends to explore.

THE RESORT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED WITH AN EYE TOWARD WINTER AND ASPIRATIONS FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES. THAT HISTORY WILL FINALLY COME FULL CIRCLE IN 2010 AS WHISTLER HOSTS EVENTS FOR THE OLYMPIC AND PARALYMPIC WINTER GAMES. AND ALTHOUGH IT ENDS A VERY LONG CHAPTER IN THE RESORT’S BOOK – WHISTLER’S TALE IS OBVIOUSLY FAR FROM OVER. IN FACT, AFTER THE EYES OF THE WORLD BEHOLD THE FULL EXTENT OF WHISTLER’S WINTER PLAYGROUND AND THE ADVENTURE IT OFFERS, THE RESORT’S STORY MAY JUST BE BEGINNING. The same sense of striving to experience something out of the ordinary extends well beyond Whistler’s myriad of adventure activities. To cater to the discerning tastes of its international clientele, Whistler has had to set the bar high when it comes to accommodation. You’ll find plenty of stunning and well-appointed private chalets, executive homes and VIP hotel residences offering impeccable service and a full range of amenities. The Four Seasons Resort Whistler, Canada’s only 5-diamond resort, offers beyond luxurious private residences with stunning mountain views, gourmet kitchens and ensuite bathrooms for every bedroom. The near-legendary Fairmont Chateau Whistler also offers elegant Fairmont Gold residence suites that feature a private check-in and check-out, private lounge and richly appointed rooms complete with fireplaces, twice daily housekeeping and gorgeous views. Both also offer private concierge services that will take care of everything from lift tickets to private lessons, top-of-the-line rental equipment, private tour guides and even boot fitting and boot warming. They’ll even take away your gear at the end of the day so you can enjoy Whistler’s après scene unfettered by skis and poles. In-resort companies like VIP Mountain Holidays also offer deluxe and personalized private concierge

programs that include custom-designed itineraries, private airport transfers, 24/7 personal guide, lift tickets, dinner reservations, personal grocery shopping/delivery services, and everything you could imagine to create the perfect getaway. Of course, you’ll want to make sure you take an opportunity to dine at one of Whistler’s award-winning restaurants while you’re there. Canada’s top-ranked chef, Melissa Craig, can be found whipping up award-winning cuisine at the Bearfoot Bistro. Craig’s three and five-course tasting menu blends local West Coast and international ingredients for sumptuous fare like confit Fraser Valley duck leg and her gold medal-winning king crab trio dish. Another culinary cornerstone in the resort is Araxi. Ranked best restaurant in Whistler for nine consecutive years, Araxi features regional menus by accomplished executive chef James Walt that celebrate locally sourced ingredients from nearby Pemberton Valley farms. Almond crusted Queen Charlotte halibut and Alberta prime tenderloin steak are highlights of Walt’s main dish menu. The wine list at both restaurants is vast. Whistler has already earned a reputation as an incomparible winter playground and continues to evolve to offer guests the most memorable visit possible. experience
