Opposing Austerity, the Revolutionary Works of Bridget Riley BY SOTHEBY'S | JAN 20, 2020

An iconic example of Bridget Riley’s 1960s oeuvre, Shift is an exemplary work that highlights the artist’s status as a pioneer of Op art. The significance of Shift was recognised very early on by its inclusion within a number of landmark exhibitions, including at the Städtische Kunstgalerie, Bochum, in 1964; the Hayward Gallery, London, in 1971; and a major travelling exhibition which started at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, in 1978. Potently encapsulating the British artist’s distinctive and mesmerising pictorial style, the work has been exhibited extensively since. The striking black and white palette of Shift is a defining hallmark of Riley’s earliest paintings: colour tones did not begin to appear in her work until 1967. The absence of chromatic hues within Shift and other major works of the period, such as Movement in Squares of 1961 (Arts Council Collection, London) and Current of 1964 (The Museum of Modern Art, New York) enables the purity of geometric form to be displayed to magnificent effect, whilst reinforcing the powerful dynamism of the composition. Indeed, 41 of Riley's black and white compositions from the 1960s reside in important museum collections around the world. Writing in 1965, Riley outlined the particular impressions she was aiming for within her painting: “The basis of my paintings is this: that in each of them a particular situation is stated. Certain elements within that situation remain constant, others precipitate the destruction of themselves by themselves. Recurrently, as a result of the cyclic movement of repose, disturbance and repose, the original situation is restored” (Bridget Riley cited in: Exh. Cat. Gauguin, Sérusier, Boudin, and other Masters from the Long Collection BY SOTHEBY'S | JAN 20, 2020 Odilon Redon’s exquisite still-life compositions of floral arrangements constitute the hallmark of the artist’s œuvre. This painting is executed in pastel and is a prime example of this defining motif, with the inherent fragile quality of the medium perfectly reflecting the delicate subject matter. In this masterful composition, Redon brings the floral composition to life, balancing texture and contrast, and enlivening the sheet with vibrant bursts of colour. Paul Sérusier’s depiction of two young peasant women at the edge of the winding river Aulne, just below Châteauneuf-du-Faou, is a wonderful synthesis of some of Sérusier’s most characteristic works from his Pont-Aven period. Sérusier frequently made use of unknown female subjects, and throughout his time in Brittany this trope was frequently utilised. In the present work these forms are imagined with a particularly elegant, simplified palette set amongst strongly outlined forms and vibrant colours. These specific stylistic motifs, which the artist developed during his involvement with the Pont-Aven group, were heavily influenced by his introduction to Gauguin’s Symbolist aesthetic in the late 1880s. Throughout the 1870s, Eugène Boudin made frequent trips to the coastal towns of northern France, and the low Countries, capturing the vibrant atmosphere of these ports and beaches. Preserving History: Newly Reopened Hong Kong Museum Unveils Important Collection of Chinese Paintings By Vivienne Chow | JAN 19, 2020 There is more to the multimillion-dollar revamp of the Hong Kong Museum of Art than meets the eye. The four-year renovation of the city’s oldest cultural institution is not just about sizing up its exhibition spaces and opening up its facade to incorporate the view of the Victoria Harbour as if it were a living scroll. Uncover Mario Buatta's Celebrated Interior Styles BY SOTHEBY'S | JAN 17, 2020 Sotheby's is honored to present furniture, fine art and decorative objects from the personal collection of legendary interior designer Mario Buatta in a dedicated two-day auction. The sale includes a panoply of nearly 1,000 works that Buatta lived with in his Upper East Side apartment in New York City as well as the William Mason House – an historic gothic-style home in Thompson, Connecticut – and feature many pieces that have long been admired in showhouse rooms and shelter magazines over the years. Here, discover the vast array of styles beloved by Buatta. olitically, the Regency is defined as the period between 1811 and 1820 when Parliament named the Prince of Wales as Regent to his physically and mentally incapacitated father George III. In the decorative arts, the term refers to a period spanning the late 1790s to the end of George IV’s reign in 1830 or even that of William IV in 1837, which marked a definitive break from 18thcentury Georgian taste. The Regency style had many influences both internally and from abroad, beginning with the neoclassicism of the late Louis XVI period practiced by the Prince of Wales’ architect Henry Holland followed by the more archaeologically-inspired French Empire style developed by Napoleon’s tastemakers Percier and Fontaine, based on Greek and Roman antiquity and paralleled in England by the work of the architect Charles Heathcote Tatham and the connoisseur-collector Thomas Hope.
