On the cover: Providence College’s Ruane Center for the Humanities is designed to accommodate the newly structured Development of Western Civilization program as well as offices for the School of Arts & Sciences, the center for the Study of the Humanities, the Liberal Arts Honors Program, and the Departments of English and History. Glazing | Bird Glass The Issue Given the hundreds of millions of birds killed every year due to collisions with glass on buildings, bird window strikes are rapidly becoming a major factor in the decline of bird populations. This is caused by glass on all types of structures—from big city skyscrapers to windows on personal residences. The reflective and transparent characteristics of glass make windows and facades dangerous for birds. They see the reflection of trees or the sky in a window, or see through the glass to trees and sky on the other side of a window or glass corridor. There is no barrier perceived and they fly into the glass causing instant death or severe head trauma that they eventually die from or because they are injured, fall prey to scavengers. The Challenge Glass as a design element has many purposes, including providing a feeling of openness and to bring sunlight into the building. And advances in glass technology make it an ideal building and design material. This along with green building practices that focus on energy efficiency through the use of natural light add up to more and more glass being utilized in architecture, which translates to continued dangerous conditions for birds. Architects, builders and owners are challenged to specify glass that is attractive, provides a feeling of openness and natural light; is maintainable; affordable; energy-efficient...and also that creates “visual noise” alerting birds that a barrier is present.

Synergy windows feature insulating glass manufactured by Cardinal Glass Industries, a leader in the development and manufacture of advanced high performance glass for windows and doors.

Testing | In-house

Testing & Ratings Our products consistently meet and exceed the highest recognized standards in the industry. In addition to the comprehensive quality control program practiced in-house, Synergy tests our windows and doors to all required American and Canadian standards, including ratings such as Air infiltration/Exfiltration, Water Penetration and Forced Entry. Products we manufacture for each project are selected at random and tested in our in house lab. Testing for compliance currently to AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440-08 (NAFS: North American Fenestration Standard/Specification for windows, doors, and skylights) is ongoing. Independent accredited labs perform various tests on a regular basis. Our NFRC (National Fenestration Ratings Council) listings and ENERGY STAR qualifications are overseen by Keystone Certifications Inc. When it comes to efficiency, a portion of our product offering has even been certified with the prestigious â&#x20AC;&#x153;Most Efficientâ&#x20AC;? award in the Energy Star program for outstanding energy performance. Synergy product testing often goes beyond the factory or laboratory: we also field test our sizeable projects. This rigorous testing process is part of our commitment to superior performance, ensuring that we are providing the best windows and doors on the market.

Stainless Steel Clad; Modern in appearance Synergy’s stainless steel cladding combine corrosion protection with outstanding design and beauty. Select from a variety of interior wood species Iron Clad; Historic in appearance Synergy offers a wide range of wrought iron works that can be mounted to the exterior using secured barrel hinges to allow for cleaning. Alternatively we offer the wrought iron works hermetically sealed in the insulating glass panel allowing for ease of cleaning and a for a more contemporary feel Zinc Clad; Dramatic in appearance Zinc is weatherproof, corrosion resistant, and not degraded by Ultra Violet light. A patina on the surface protects it from moisture. As a result, zinc cladding has a very long service life. There are examples of installed Zinc projects in both Belgium and The Netherlands that are in excess of 100 years old.
