DATAK - DEPP
INTRODUCING
DEPPTM from Datak Direct Etch Project Plans What is DEPPtm? DEPP is an acronym for Direct Etch Project Plans. DEPPtm projects are interesting small circuits for the experimenter or student. Included in DEPPtm packages are complete plans for building a circuit, including the schematic, parts list and a Rub-down Dataktm dry-transfer that can be used to make a PC (Printed Circuit) Board. DEPP is packaged for customers to find at point of sale in a distributor’s store. Although this is a low cost series of products, the distributor benefits from add-on sales of components in addition to the sale of DEPP Packages. A GREAT teaching aid! DEPP is ideal for teachers and their students. Once a student has made his own P C Board, it will stick with him through life. He will be able to visualize better, making him a quick study for more complex processes, such as multilayer boards. What is in a DEPP Package? In addition to the parts listing, schematic and special notes about each circuit, a DEPP package contains: A Dry-transfer of the Circuit solder-side pattern that may be transferred to the copper surface to act as an etch resist. Burnish it onto the copper, etch, drill and Presto! A PC Board is made. A Dry-transfer of the Component-side of the PC Board, which is applied after etching and drilling the PC Board. This pattern helps the builder with correct parts location and orientation. The following DEPP Packages and books are available now at local Distributor stores. Number

TRANSFORMERS Center-tapped, power supply or filament transformers.
Primary wires are black, secondary are red with green insulation on the center tap.
Transformer voltage will vary with the circuit load; or: how much will be drawn by the circuit following the power supply. The following transformers will produce the “rated” voltage when loaded near its rated maximum current. Example: a 12 Volt transformer with a 120 VAC input will have an output around twenty volts A.C. when no load is attached. When a “test load” that draws close to the rated current is attached to the secondary, the output will be very close to the rated voltage. For reference, in the chart (below) we show the voltage at the secondary with no load and also with a resistive load that will draw the maximum rated current. Philmore transformers’ “catalog voltage” is generally the target voltage that can be expected after rectification, allowing for voltage drop through diodes. Finally, it is common practice to use a power supply that can deliver twice the current that the circuit will require during its operational average current usage. See the Notes section on next page. The chart below shows not only the “catalog” voltage rating, but open circuit (no load) voltages and full load voltages for each transformer. The full, or “resistive load” is the value connected across the secondary, and the Output VAC w/load is the actual voltage from the test transformer. Any transformer will heat up considerably if constantly run at the full current rating. The “W” is the width of the frame and the “D” is the depth dimension measured at widest part of the coil.

TRANSFORMERS Center-tapped, power supply or filament transformers. NOTES: It is the users responsibility to determine which transformer is appropriate for his use, as well as which circuit provides an adequate and safe power supply. These notes are given as general guidelines and are not intended for use by persons lacking technical expertise. The current rating is the absolute maximum current output at the rated voltage. The transformer’s rated current should be about twice your circuit’s current needs. This will assure plenty of reserve power and a cool running power supply. Only for brief and infrequent peaks of a few seconds should your circuit draw as much current as the peak rating. In short, if you have an amplifier (for example) that requires 250mA current during normal operation, then use at least a 500mA or larger transformer. Audio circuits in particular will require power above the circuit’s average and there must be spare power to prevent distortion as well as over-heating. DIODES; the current rating of diodes used in a full wave rectifier circuit should be at least twice the secondary current to be able to handle turn-on surge current. The reverse voltage rating of diodes should be at least 1.5 times the voltage of the secondary; most engineers prefer a bit more than that. In half wave circuits, the diode’s reverse rating must exceed 2.8 times (or more) the AC rating. Don’t forget to take into account voltage drop in your chosen components, especially diodes which can drop a half volt each. Capacitors; the voltage rise in a capacitor will increase due to transformer regulation; use a capacitor rated about three times the DC load current. DC REGULATORS; probably one of the best devices ever to come from the semi-conductor manufacturers are voltage regulators. Connected at the output of your power supply, a regulator can provide a fixed DC voltage . Look for the 78L series for small regulators (100mA) and the 78XX series can provide one amp at a fixed voltage. (7805=five volts, 7812=twelve volts etc.) The LM317T IC can provide an adjustable voltage; see industry texts for typical circuits.

FULL WAVE Capacitor Input Load. A typical power supply circuit using two diodes. As a general rule of thumb, multiply the transformer’s secondary AC voltage times 0.45 to determine output average DC voltage.
FULL WAVE BRIDGE Typical full wave bridge rectifier; multiply the secondary ACV output by 0.90 to determine DC voltage. DC current is about 0.94 of the secondary current, or “rated current” in the part numbers chart on the preceding page. POWER SUPPLY COMPONENTS available in this catalog.

PROTECTIVE COATINGS FOR DRY - TRANSFERS All dry transfers have limited resistance to abrasion and handling; they should be given a protective coating. A great deal of development has gone into creating Datak’s protective coatings, which we believe to be the best that you can use on any brand of transfers. See below to be sure that you select the correct type of coating for your application.
DATAKOAT
TM
for Hard Surfaces
Protects dry transfers with a tough, clear, weatherproof shield. Water clear and will not yellow with age. Available in either gloss or matte: use gloss for a mirror smooth surface or matte for a lustrous, satiny finish. For use on hard surfaces such as enamels, plastics etc.. DATAKOAT spray dries tack-free within a few minutes, but requires several days to fully harden. Baking will accelerate the process. See the package label for details. RESISTANCE: unaffected by methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, hexane, naptha and mineral spirits. Unaffected by most lubricating oils and hydraulic fluids. But soluble in; Freon, methylene chloride, butanol, higher alcohols, acetone, ketones, toluene, xylene and glycol ethers. DATAKOAT is also supplied in a brush-on package for local application to dry transfers. The dried brush-on package for local application to dry transfers. The dried brush-on leaves a shiny coating; use the sprays if this is objectionable
DATAKOAT brush-on liquid w/thinner (1 oz.) - No. 04176 DATAKOAT gloss spray (12 oz.) - No. 04177
HARDKOAT
TM
for Paper or Cardboard...
Clear sprays protect dry transfers on absorbent surfaces such as paper. Abrasion resistance is superior to DATAKOAT, but resistance to weathering and UV is not as good. One coat over paper will completely protect a dry transfer from scuffing and abrasion. Matte coats give a pleasing frosted effect. Heavy multiple spray coats may have a perceptible yellowish tint, so use DATAKOAT where an absolutely water-clear coat is essential. HARDKOAT films dry tack-free within a few minutes, but require several days to fully harden. When coating a large area, the gloss spray can produce a pleasing, somewhat shiny appearance. If using on local area, the matte finish tends to be less visible.
HARDKOAT gloss spray (12 oz.) - No. 04170 HARDKOAT matte spray (12 oz.) -No. 04171

PREMIER PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARDS POSITIVE ACTING, PRESENSITIZED PC BOARDS USING FR - 4 FIBERGLASS SUBSTRATE These new sizes are in demand in many specialized applications. The thin 1/32” boards are light weight and fit edge connectors designed for that board thickness. And the 2oz. boards have exactly twice the standard thickness of copper; a requirement in applications where higher current will be used or when higher conductivity is imperative. Like the standard series of 1/16” thickness, 1oz. Premier Printed Circuit boards, the new numbers may be exposed with any ordinary 100 watt lightbulb. Use with either Datak positive acting developer Nos. 12-402 or 12-404.
