Who is Syntech SA? Syntech SA is an IT Hardware Distribution company established in 2002. We constantly source new products from a variety of international hardware manufacturers, distributing several brands including OCZ, Patriot, Twintech, ATTO, G-Tech and Sonnet. Based in Cape Town, South Africa, we distribute an extensive range of computer related products throughout Southern Africa.

Dual in-line memory module, comprises a series of dynamic random access memory integrated circuits. These modules are mounted on a printed circuit board and designed for use in personal computers, workstations and servers. DIMMs began to replace SIMMs (single in-line memory modules) as the predominant type of memory module as Intel’s Pentium processors began to gain market share.

ECC

Errors and Error Correction. An ECC-capable memory controller as used in many modern PCs can typically detect and correct errors of a single bit per 64-bit “word” (the unit of bus transfer), and detect (but not correct) errors of two bits per 64-bit word. Some systems also ‘scrub’ the errors, by writing the corrected version back to memory.

Registered Memory

Registered (also called buffered) memory modules have a register between the DRAM modules and the system’s memory controller. They place less electrical load on the memory controller and allow single systems to remain stable with more memory modules than they would have otherwise. Registered memory is more expensive because of the lower volume and the additional components, so it is usually found only in applications where the need for scalability and stability outweighs the need for a low price

Fully Buffered

Fully Buffered DIMM (or FB-DIMM) is a memory technology which can be used to increase reliability, speed and density of memory systems. Conventionally, data lines from the memory controller have to be connected to data lines in every DRAM module. As memory width, as well as access speed, increases, the signal degrades at the interface of the bus and the device. This limits the speed and/or the memory density. FB-DIMMs take a different approach to solve this problem. As with nearly all RAM specifications, the FB-DIMM specification was published by JEDEC.

Timings

Column Address Strobe (CAS) latency, or CL, is the delay time between the moment a memory controller tells the memory module to access a particular memory column on a RAM memory module, and the moment the data from given array location is available on the module’s output pins.

The Digital Visual Interface (DVI) is a video interface standard designed to provide very high visual quality on digital display devices such as flat panel LCD computer displays and digital projectors. Make sure you know what you are dealing with, with Syntech SA’s glossary. 10 Gigabit Ethernet - 10GE, 10Gbe, 10GigE

This is the fastest of the ethernet standards. It defines a version of Ethernet with a nominal data rate of 10 Gbit/s, ten times as fast as Gigabit Ethernet.

32 bit

64 bit

In computer architecture, 32-bit integers, memory addresses, or other data units are those that are at most 32 bits (4 octets) wide. Also, 32-bit CPU and ALU architectures are those that are based on registers, address buses, or data buses of that size. 32-bit is also a term given to a generation of computers in which 32-bit processors were the norm. In computer architecture, 64-bit integers, memory addresses, or other data units are those that are at most 64 bits (8 octets) wide. Also, 64-bit CPU and ALU architectures are those that are based on registers, address buses, or data buses of that size. 64-bit is also a term given to a generation of computers in which 64-bit processors were the norm.

Accelerated Graphics Port - AGP

This is a high-speed point-to-point channel for attaching a video card to a computer’s motherboard, primarily to assist in the acceleration of 3D computer graphics. Since 2004, AGP has been progressively phased out in favor of PCI Express. As of mid-2009, PCIe cards dominate the market, but new AGP cards and motherboards are still available for purchase, though OEM driver support is minimal.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth is an open wireless protocol for exchanging data over short distances (using short length radio waves) from fixed and mobile devices.

Column Address Strobe (CAS) latency - CL

CL is the delay time between the moment a memory controller tells the memory module to access a particular memory column on a RAM memory module, and the moment the data from given array location is available on the module’s output pins. In general, the lower the CAS latency, the better. In asynchronous DRAM, the interval is specified in nanoseconds. In synchronous DRAM, the interval is specified in clock cycles. Because the latency is dependent upon a number of clock ticks instead of an arbitrary time, the actual time for an SDRAM module to respond to a CAS event might vary between uses of the same module if the clock rate differs.

Compact Disc - CD

A Compact Disc (also known as a CD) is an optical disc used to store digital data. It was originally developed to store sound recordings exclusively, but later it also allowed the preservation of other types of data.

Clock rate/speed

The clock rate is the rate in cycles per second (measured in hertz) for the frequency of the clock in any synchronous circuit (e.g. a CPU).

Contrast ratio

The contrast ratio is a measure of a display system, defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest color (white) to that of the darkest color (black) that the system is capable of producing. A high contrast ratio is a desired aspect of any display, but with the various methods of measurement for a system or its part, remarkably different measured values can sometimes produce similar results.

Central Processing Unit - CPU

The Central Processing Unit (CPU) or the processor is the portion of a computer system that carries out the instructions of a computer program, and is the primary element carrying out the computer’s functions.

Direct-attached storage - DAS

DAS refers to a digital storage system directly attached to a server or workstation, without a storage network in between. It is a retronym, mainly used to differentiate non-networked storage from SAN and NAS.

Double Data Rate - DDR

A computer bus operating with double data rate transfers data on both the rising and falling edges of the clock signal. This is also known as double pumped, dual-pumped, and double transition.

Dual in-line memory module - DIMM

Dual Layer

Dual-layer recording (sometimes also known as double-layer recording) allows DVD-R and DVD+R discs to store significantly more data—up to 8.54 gigabytes per disc, compared with 4.7 gigabytes for single-layer discs. Digital Versatile Disc - DVD

Errors and Error Correction - ECC

An ECC-capable memory controller as used in many modern PCs can typically detect and correct errors of a single bit per 64-bit “word” (the unit of bus transfer), and detect (not correct) errors of 2 bits per 64-bit word. Some systems also ‘scrub’ the errors, by writing the corrected version back to memory.

External SATA - e-SATA

eSATA, standardized in 2004, provides a variant of SATA meant for external connectivity.

Ethernet

Ehernet is a family of frame-based computer networking technologies for local area networks (LANs). The name comes from the physical concept of the ether. It defines a number of wiring and signaling standards for the Physical Layer of the OSI networking model, through means of network access at the Media Access Control protocol (a sub-layer of Data Link Layer), and a common addressing format. Ethernet is standardized as IEEE 802.3. The combination of the twisted pair versions of Ethernet for connecting end systems to the network, along with the fiber optic versions for site backbones, is the most widespread wired LAN technology.

Fibre Channel - FC Fibre Channel, or FC, is a gigabit-speed network technology primarily used for storage networking. It has become the standard connection type for storage area networks (SAN) in enterprise storage. Fibre Channel signaling can run on both twisted pair copper wire and fiber-optic cables.

FireWire

The IEEE 1394 interface is a serial bus interface standard for high-speed communications and isochronous real-time data transfer, frequently used by personal computers, as well as in digital audio, digital video, automotive, and aeronautics applications. FireWire 400. It can transfer data between devices at 100, 200, or 400 Mbit/s half-duplex data rate FireWire 800. It can transfer data at a rate of 786.432 Mbit/s full-duplex via a new encoding scheme termed beta mode.

Fully Buffered DIMM - FB-DIMM)

Gigabyte - GB

The gigabyte is a multiple of the unit byte for digital information storage (10243 bytes) Examples of gigabyte-sized storage: One hour of SDTV video at 2.2 Mbit/s is approximately 1 GB. Seven minutes of HDTV video at 19.39 Mbit/s is approximately 1 GB. 114 minutes of uncompressed CD-quality audio at 1.4 Mbit/s is approximately 1 GB. A DVD-R can hold 4.7 GB. A dual-layered Blu-ray disc can hold 50 GB.

Gigabit - Gb

Gigabit is is commonly used when referring to data transfer rates, with the symbol Gbit (or Gb). 8 bits = 1 byte. Network transfer rates and download speeds are often referred to in gigabits, whereas the sizes of files transferred over these networks are often referred to in gigabytes. To achieve a transfer rate of one gigabyte per second one would need a network connection with a transfer rate of eight gigabits per second.

High-Definition Multimedia Interface - HDMI

iSCSI usually uses Ethernet connectors and cables as its physical transport, but can run over any physical transport capable of transporting IP.

Liquid crystal display - LCD

A LCD is a thin, flat panel used for electronically displaying information such as text, images, and moving pictures. Among its major features are its lightweight construction, its portability, and its ability to be produced in much larger screen sizes than are practical for the construction of cathode ray tube (CRT) display technology. Its low electrical power consumption enables it to be used in battery-powered electronic equipment.

Glossary Megabyte - MB

The megabyte is a multiple of the unit byte for digital information storage. it is used to mean 1000×1024 (1024000) bytes.

Megabit - Mb

This is based on an eight-bit-sized byte. The megabit is commonly used when referring to data transfer rates of computer networks or telecommunications systems, e.g., a 100 Mbit/s (megabit per second) Fast-Ethernet connection, or a 10 Mbit/s Internet access service. The megabit should not be confused with the similarly named megabyte. One megabit = 0.125 megabytes. Network transfer rates and download speeds are often referred to in megabits, whereas the sizes of files transferred over these networks are often referred to in megabytes. To achieve a transfer rate of one megabyte (1024k) per second one would need a network connection with a transfer rate of eight megabits per second.

Megahertz - MHz

The hertz (symbol: Hz) is a unit of frequency. It is defined as the number of complete cycles per second. In computing, most central processing units (CPU) are labeled in terms of their clock rate expressed in megahertz or gigahertz (109 hertz). This number refers to the frequency of the CPU’s master clock signal (“Clock rate”). This signal is simply an electrical voltage which changes from low to high and back again at regular intervals.

Nanometer

This is a unit of length in the metric system, equal to one billionth of a meter.It is one of the more often used units for very small lengths, and equals ten Ångström, an internationally recognized non-SI unit of length. It is often associated with the field of nanotechnology and the wavelength of light. Formerly, millimicron (symbol mµ) was used for the nanometre. The symbol µµ has also been used.It is also the most common unit used to describe the manufacturing technology used in the semiconductor industry. It is the most common unit to describe the wavelength of light, with visible light falling in the region of 400–700 nm.

Network-attached storage - NAS

Network-attached storage (NAS) is file-level computer data storage connected to a computer network providing data access to heterogeneous network clients.

Northbridge

The northbridge, also known as a memory controller hub (MCH) or an integrated memory controller (IMC) in Intel systems (AMD, VIA, SiS and others usually use ‘northbridge’), is one of the two chips in the core logic chipset on a PC motherboard, the other being the southbridge. Separating the chipset into the northbridge and southbridge is common, although there are rare instances where these two chips have been combined onto one die when design complexity and fabrication processes permit it.

Organic LED - OLED

An organic light emitting diode (OLED), also organic electro luminescent device (OELD), is a light-emitting diode (LED) whose emissive electroluminescent layer is composed of a film of organic compounds. This layer of organic semiconductor material is formed between two electrodes, where at least one of the electrodes is transparent.In the context of displays, OLEDs have a significant advantage over traditional liquid crystal displays (LCDs). OLED displays do not require a backlight to function. Thus, they can display deep black levels, draw far less power, and can be much thinner and lighter than an LCD panel. OLED displays also naturally achieve much higher contrast ratio than LCD screens using cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) and newer LED backlights.

Parallel ATA (PATA) / IDE

Parallel ATA (PATA) is an interface standard for the connection of storage devices such as hard disks, solid-state drives, floppy drives, and CD-ROM drives in computers. It uses the underlying AT Attachment and AT Attachment Packet Interface (ATA/ATAPI) standards. ATA/ATAPI is an evolution of the AT Attachment Interface, which was itself evolved in several stages from Western Digital’s original Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) interface. As a result, many near-synonyms for ATA/ATAPI and its previous incarnations exist, including abbreviations such as IDE which are still in common informal use. After the market introduction of Serial ATA in 2003, the original ATA was retroactively renamed Parallel ATA. SATA offers several compelling advantages over the older parallel ATA (PATA) interface: reduced cable-bulk and cost (reduced from 80 wires to seven), faster and more efficient data transfer, and hot swapping.

Peripheral Component Interconnect - PCI

Conventional PCI (part of the PCI Local Bus standard and often shortened to PCI) is a computer bus for attaching hardware devices in a computer. These devices can take either the form of an integrated circuit fitted onto the motherboard itself, called a planar device in the PCI specification, or an expansion card that fits into a slot. Typical PCI cards used in PCs include: network cards, sound cards, modems, extra ports such as USB or serial, TV tuner cards and disk controllers.

Peripheral Component Interconnect Express - PCIe

This is a computer expansion card standard designed to replace the older PCI, PCI-X, and AGP standards. PCIe 2.0 is the latest standard for expansion cards that is available on mainstream personal computers. PCI Express is used in consumer, server, and industrial applications, as a motherboard-level interconnect (to link motherboard-mounted peripherals) and as an expansion card interface for add-in boards. The PCIe electrical interface is also used in a variety of other standards, most notably the ExpressCard laptop expansion card interface. Conceptually, the PCIe bus can be thought of as a high-speed serial replacement of the older (parallel) PCI/PCI-X bus. At the software level, PCIe preserves compatibility with PCI; a PCIe device can be configured and used in legacy applications and operating systems which have no direct knowledge of PCIe’s newer features.

Resolution

The display resolution of a digital television or display device is the number of distinct pixels in each dimension that can be displayed. It is simply the physical number of columns and rows of pixels creating the display (e.g., 1920×1200).

Storage area network - SAN

A storage area network (SAN) is an architecture to attach remote computer storage devices (such as disk arrays, tape libraries, and optical jukeboxes) to servers in such a way that the devices appear as locally attached to the operating system.

Serial Attached SCSI - SAS

In computing, the data-transfer technology Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) moves data to and from computer storage devices such as hard drives and tape drives. SAS depends on a point-to-point serial protocol that replaces the parallel SCSI bus technology that first appeared in the mid 1980s in data centers and workstations, and it uses the standard SCSI command set. In 2009 it doubled its speed to 6 Gbit/s, allowing for much higher speed data transfers than previously available. SAS offers backwards-compatibility with second-generation SATA drives. SATA 3 Gbit/s drives may be connected to SAS backplanes, but SAS drives may not be connected to SATA backplanes.

Serial ATA - SATA

The serial ATA or SATA computer bus, is a storage-interface for connecting host bus adapters to mass storage devices such as hard disk drives and optical drives. Small Computer System Interface - SCSI

Small Computer System Interface, or SCSI (pronounced scuzzy), is a set of standards for physically connecting and transferring data between computers and peripheral devices. The SCSI standards define commands, protocols, and electrical and optical interfaces. SCSI is most commonly used for hard disks and tape drives, but it can connect a wide range of other devices, including scanners and CD drives. SCSI uses a more complex bus, usually resulting in higher manufacturing costs. SCSI buses also allow connection of several drives (using multiple channels, 7 or 15 on each channel), whereas SATA allows one drive per channel, unless using a port multiplier.

Secure Digital - SD

Secure Digital is a non-volatile memory card format developed by Panasonic, SanDisk, and Toshiba for use in portable devices. Currently it is widely used in digital cameras, digital camcorders, handheld computers, netbook computers, PDAs, media players, mobile phones, GPS receivers, and video games. Southbridge

The Southbridge, also known as an I/O Controller Hub (ICH) or a Platform Controller Hub (PCH) in Intel systems (AMD, VIA, SiS and others usually use ‘southbridge’), is a chip that implements the “slower” capabilities of the motherboard in a northbridge/southbridge chipset computer architecture. The southbridge can usually be distinguished from the northbridge by not being directly connected to the CPU. Rather, the northbridge ties the southbridge to the CPU. Through the use of controller integrated channel circuitry, the northbridge can directly link signals from the I/O units to the CPU for data control and access.
