CARTESIAN PRISM WRITING THE RULES OF SPACE MAKING

An exercise in defining space through the use of tectonic elements: plane, frame, and volume. First, students constructed iterations of 4”cubes, each of a single material (foam core, basswood, or blue foam) that corresponded to a tectonic element. Once we graduated to constructing our prisms out of a single material to demonstrate use of all three tectonic systems, we chose a verb to further elevate our models in their composition and complexity. The act of “slipping” produced my activated prism.

ACTION SPACE

CONSTRUCTING A PLACE OF RITUAL An exploration of heirarchy, formal order , and sequence to create three disticnt “action spaces” through the engagement of a main wall.

HOUSE | HOME | HABITAT EXPLORING RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE

Students were asked to study prominent works of residential architecture in order to identify generalized “strategies” that can be applied to any project. Analysis of Louis Kahn’s Esherick House revealed his strategy of establishing a rhythm of vertical planes to organize program groups of “served” and “servant” spaces.

GROUND CONTROL

U N D E R S TA N D I N G F I G U R E + F I E L D A cumulative exercise concerning the use of tectonic systems to establish heirarchy, formal order, and sequence, but this time with consideration of the site. Given a site with a road, slope, and body of water, students were asked to apply strategies that they extracted from their HHH studies to influence their designs. Similar to how Kahn distinguished compressed “servant” spaces from their decompressed “served” counterparts, I used a rhythm of vertical planes to create a distiction between domestic and cultural spaces. I also worked with the strategy of prolonging entry through the repetition of multiple facades, as borrowed from Michael Grave’s Hanselmann House.
