DIRECTOR'S NOTE
For our production, we decided to lean into Shakespeare’s title and what it references — the Twelfth Night holiday, which occurs on the twelfth night after Christmas, just before the feast of the Epiphany. Traditionally, the celebration was filled with revels, pranks and disguises, music and merriment, with women dressing like men and men like women. There was role playing and heavy drinking was encouraged — all elements that find themselves in Shakespeare’s play in one form or another. The play was commissioned by Queen Elizabeth I, and was first presented as part of an actual Twelfth Night celebration
In a nod to the air of holiday merriment within the play, our design elements and conceptual approach both contain strong references to the Christmas holiday — the joy it brings and the introspection which often accompanies it, as one enters the deepest part of winter.
I’ve had a great time working with this wonderful group of actors, designers, and production team members, and I am excited to share our work with you. I hope you enjoy it.
I would also like to extend a special thanks to Ralph Zito for inviting me to explore this wonderful play as part of the Department of Drama’s season.
— Will Pomerantz, Director

PLAYWRIGHT
William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s preeminent dramatist. His surviving works, including some collaborations, consist of 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Most of his known work was produced between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were mainly comedies and histories, genres he raised to the peak of sophistication and artistry by the end of the sixteenth century. He then wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth, considered some of the finest works in the English language. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances, and collaborated with other playwrights. Shakespeare was a respected poet and playwright in his own day, but his reputation did not rise to its present heights until the nineteenth century. The Romantics, in particular, acclaimed Shakespeare’s genius, and the Victorians worshipped Shakespeare with a reverence that George Bernard Shaw called “bardolatry”. His plays remain highly popular today and are constantly studied, performed, and reinterpreted in diverse cultural and political contexts throughout the world.
