A NOTE Of WELCOME

I

n March, the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra recognizes Music In Our Schools Month. We play an important role in supporting music education, with more than 25,000 students participating annually in the SSO’s various education programs. So far, this season, the orchestra has presented 17 education concerts to more than 6,961 local students in grades pre-K through eight. SSO ensembles present programs in area schools that complement teaching curricula. The Central New York Community Foundation Family Series has brought the Symphony experience to hundreds of families with children, and our extraordinary Syracuse Symphony Youth Orchestras nurture and showcase the talents of our area’s most promising young performers—see and hear them perform together with the SSO on March 22. Unfortunately, our current economy has the potential to curtail music education programs—those sponsored by the SSO, and those taught in our schools. When cuts are required, music and art are too often the first to be sacrificed. This strategy is shortsighted and potentially disastrous to the quality of our children’s education. Music study involves ratios, pattern recognition, hand-eye coordination, and thinking in space and time. It emphasizes self-discipline, practice and teamwork. Numerous studies have shown that students engaged in music study score higher on tests and are better academic students and

citizens. One study revealed that college music majors were the most likely group of applicants to be admitted to medical school! You can help support the SSO’s education efforts by subscribing to the Central New York Community Foundation Family Series or sponsoring a subscription for a deserving family. Your business can sponsor an ensemble concert in a school or underwrite the transportation of students to an education concert. For a special night, take your entire family to a Symphony concert. Student tickets are only $5. Finally, you can sponsor a young musician in the 19th Annual Syracuse Symphony Association Practice Marathon. Students raise money to support the SSO’s education and community engagement programs by securing sponsors to donate money based upon the students’ practice time. To date, this event has raised more than $300,000. For information, call 422-8222, ext. 242, or visit ssapracticemarathon.com. Thank you for supporting the SSO’s vital mission. Enjoy the concert!

elcome! Whether you are a longtime subscriber or a first-time visitor, you play an important role in making today’s performance special, and we’re glad that you are here. You may have heard us refer to the orchestra as “Your Syracuse Symphony Orchestra.” We mean that sincerely—our charge is to serve our community with great music, and it is a charge that we take to heart. Certainly, our concerts in March and April demonstrate our commitment to providing a wide variety of programming for you to enjoy. As you leaf through this book, you’ll see a salute to the Big Band Era (Page 21), Beethoven’s 4th Piano Concerto (Page 31), our own Deborah Coble, flutist, performing as soloist (page 49), as well as a multimedia experience with Holst’s The Planets (page 63.) Serving our community also requires us to step out of the concert hall to help those in our community who are in need. This month, we

are pleased to participate, in collaboration with the League of American Orchestras, in a national initiative, Orchestras Feeding America, a food drive in which orchestras from around the country will collect contributions for local food banks. Inspired by the soon-to-be released film The Soloist, orchestras are working together to become a catalyst for change by helping to address the problem of hunger in our midst. Please visit www.SyracuseSymphony.org for more information about this important initiative and details about how you can participate. Thank you again for your patronage. We appreciate it—and we hope you enjoy today’s performance.

ARTISTIC LEADERSHIP

DANIEL HEGE Music Director

Now in his ninth season as Music Director of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, Daniel Hege is recognized as one of America’s finest young conductors and has earned acclaim for his fresh interpretations of the standard repertoire and his commitment to creative programming. In 2001, he finished a five-year tenure as Resident Conductor of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, where he worked closely with David Zinman and Yuri Temirkanov. Mr. Hege first attracted attention when he won the post of Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Young Musicians’ Foundation Debut Orchestra in Los Angeles. He served, concurrently, as Director of Instrumental Music at the Orange County High School of the Arts and Assistant Conductor of the Pacific Symphony Orchestra. Since then, he has served as Music Director of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra (where he was twice honored by the American Symphony Orchestra League for innovative programming), Encore Chamber Orchestra of Chicago, Haddonfield Symphony Orchestra in New Jersey, and Newton Mid-Kansas Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Hege has guest conducted leading orchestras including the Baltimore, Columbus, Colorado, Detroit, Houston, Louisville, Oregon, San Diego and Seattle Symphony Orchestras, the Rochester, Calgary,

Naples and Louisiana Philharmonics, and has won acclaim abroad for his performances with the Leicester Orchestra of England, Singapore and St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestras, Auckland Philharmonia, and the Symphony Orchestra of Lima, Peru. He has guest conducted at the Music Academy of the West, National Orchestra Institute, the National Repertory Orchestra, the Aspen and Grand Teton music festivals, and in most recent years, has regularly conducted opera and ballet performances. Under Mr. Hege’s artistic leadership, the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra performed a critically acclaimed concert to a sold-out audience at Carnegie Hall in April 2003. He oversaw the release of the SSO’s live Classics Concert CD in 2000, the Holiday Pops release just two years later, and the SSO’s July 2006 release, Big Band Bash. Other recordings include Done Made My Vow, a CD of works by Adolphus Hailstork with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and Morgan State Choir; Violin Concertos by Black Composers of the 18th and 19th Centuries (Cedille), with violinist Rachel Barton Pine and the Encore Chamber Orchestra (nominated for a 1998 NPR Heritage Award); and The Gift, a collection of Christmas arrangements on Woodland Records with oboist Brad Smith. Mr. Hege studied with Daniel Lewis of the University of Southern California and with Paul Vermel at the Aspen Music Festival and holds degrees in history and music at Bethel College and a masters degree in orchestral conducting at University of Utah. A 2001 40 under 40 Honoree, Mr. Hege received an honorary doctorate in Humane Letters from Le Moyne College in 2004. He is active as a guest clinician and adjudicates various musical competitions nationally. He resides in Jamesville, NY with his wife, Katarina Oladottir Hege, and their three daughters.

Free Pre-Concert Talks Please join us prior to every Post-Standard Classics concert, on Friday and Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in the concert hall, and hear Daniel Hege and guests discuss the works to be performed that evening.

THE POST-STANDARD CLASSICS SERIES

Concerto No. 4 in G Major for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 58 Last performed in February 2004 with David Lockington conducting and Lee Luvisi as piano soloist. Although he was not of noble birth, and despite his temperamental outbursts towards even close friends, Beethoven enjoyed in Vienna the encouragement and sponsorship of a number of highborn music lovers. Historians have suggested that his paradoxical social position was due less to any dawning sense of democratic feeling in aristocratic circles than to a sincere appreciation for the power of his music. The integrity and passion of his music making served to combine with the innate nobility of his character to open doors that his quarrelsome personality would otherwise have kept shut. Among Beethoven’s aristocratic supporters, who sponsored performances and provided money, commissions, introductions and even expensive musical instruments, were Count Ferdinand von Waldstein, Prince Karl Lichnowsky, Prince Ferdinand Kinsky, Prince Josef Franz Maximilian Lobkowitz, and the Russian ambassador, Count (later Prince) Andreas Kyrillovich Razumovsky. Ludwig van Beethoven The youngest member of this b. December 17, 1770 noble circle was the Archduke Rudolf, youngest son of the in Bonn, Germany Austrian emperor. He began as d. March 26, 1827 Beethoven’s piano student while in Vienna, Austria in his early teens, and soon was compiling a complete library of the master’s works. With Lobkowitz and Kinsky, he was part of the agreement that was intended to maintain Beethoven in Vienna with an annuity for life, and he was the only one of the three who managed to live up to his contract. The Archduke garnered more dedications from the composer than any other patron: among others, the Missa solemnis, the opera Fidelio, the Archduke Piano Trio, the Emperor Concerto and, in 1806, Piano Concerto No. 4 in G. The Fourth Concerto appeared during one of the most productive periods in Beethoven’s creative life. Its first performance was in a private concert at the palace of Prince Lobkowitz in 1807. The public premiere took place during a lengthy concert in a cold auditorium in December 1808. The audience shivered through four hours of world premieres of modern music, all by the same composer. Such a phenomenon could not occur today, but the more tenacious audience members who stayed to the end that night heard Beethoven’s Fifth and Sixth Symphonies, the concert aria “Ah, perfido!,” portions of the Missa solemnis, the “Choral Fantasy,” and the Fourth Piano Concerto. 34

MARCH - APRIL

The Concerto’s opening movement departs from tradition by beginning with the solo piano—not the first concerto to do so, but the most audacious early example. The piano begins softly, almost conversationally.

As though taken aback by this breach of convention, the orchestra begins its introduction by repeating the piano’s phrase in a harmonically remote key. Beethoven, despite his unusual opening, does not relegate the orchestra to a secondary role behind the piano. It is a full partner throughout, often stating new themes before the piano takes them up. He dispenses here with the trumpets and timpani, and in the next movement with the rest of the winds, as well. The remarkable Andante con moto poses a dialogue between the piano and the string section, the soft voice of reason versus gruff belligerency. Liszt likened this movement to Orpheus taming the wild beasts with the sound of his lyre, and he may have been close to the mark. Professor Owen Jander of Wellesley College has demonstrated how closely Beethoven’s music corresponds to the text of an operatic scene by his friend Friedrich August Kanne, a scene in which Orpheus appeases the Furies. The possibility that Beethoven may have had such a program in mind is purely speculative, but highly intriguing. By the close of this short movement, the strings have joined the soloist in peaceful accord. Allowing no pause, the composer launches directly into his finale, a rondo marked Vivace. At last the entire orchestra is brought into spirited give and take with the piano, as the concerto moves toward its goodhumored conclusion. Instrumentation: flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani and strings.

Talking to the Sun First performance of this work on the Classics Series. A multitalented musician, Calvin Custer was a beloved part of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra family for many years, beginning in 1962. Playing in the horn and contrabass sections and serving as keyboardist, he also performed with the SSO Percussion Ensemble and founded the Syracuse Symphony Rock Ensemble, in which he played many instruments. Also showing great skill with the baton, he became the orchestra’s Associate Conductor and then Resident Conductor, and later traveled widely as a guest conductor. He has been credited as “the architect and creative force” behind the SSO’s outreach program for music education. A graduate of Carnegie-Mellon and Syracuse Universities, Custer studied composition with Nicolai Lopatnikoff, Ernst Bacon and Earl George. Among his conducting teachers was Karl Kritz, the first Music Director of the SSO. Custer became known nationally and internationally as an arranger of popular, classical, patriotic, big band, jazz and holiday favorites for orchestra and concert band. He arrangements, encompassing composers from Bach to Lloyd Webber, and music from folk favorites to film scores, have been performed by most major American orchestras, including the

Boston Pops, which recorded some of them under the baton of Arthur Fiedler. Less widely known are Custer’s original compositions, which exhibit the same inventive flair and deep musical understanding. In 1982 the Syracuse Symphony premiered his Music for Brass and Percussion in Carnegie Hall. The SSO commissioned two other Custer compositions, Concert Piece for Horn and Orchestra (1978) and Fanfare (1985). Talking to the Sun is a delightful selection of five youthful poems, set for children’s choir and orchestra by Custer. It was commissioned by the Syracuse Children’s Chorus, which premiered the work both in its original version, accompanied by two pianos and percussion in 1995, and in its orchestrated form, with the SSO under Fabio Mechetti two years later. Dr. Barbara Marble Tagg, founder and director of the Calvin Custer SCC, recalls the work’s origins and explains how she and Custer b. July 15, 1939 worked together to select the in Atlantic City, NJ poems to be included: d. April 21, 1998 “I asked Calvin to write in Syracuse, NY something for the Syracuse Children’s Chorus. We began the process by talking about possible poetry. I gave him a book that had been given to our son Jamie when he was young by a dear friend. The book was titled Talking to the Sun: An Illustrated Anthology of Poems for Young People [edited by Kenneth Koch and] published by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Calvin asked me to select the poems I would like to use. I asked him to select some, and then we would compare notes. We had both selected one of the same poems. I knew that it was important to give him freedom to shape the piece as he worked with the poetry and developed the musical ideas. The wonderful surprise was the final piece. He did not know that my Dad owned Marble Farms Dairy, and the final poem in the set is his jazz style, Chocolate Milk. “The Syracuse Children’s Chorus premiered Talking to the Sun on Sunday, May 21, 1995, at Hendricks Chapel. It was scored for treble choir, two pianos and two percussion with Calvin Custer, conductor. Later Calvin suggested he rescore the work for orchestra with my permission. The orchestral version was premiered on February 2, 1997, with the Syracuse Children’s Chorus and the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra at Most Holy Rosary Church. “Calvin loved working with SCC, and the choristers loved working with him. There was a tremendous mutual respect for the incredible artistry of the composer and what he brought out in the young artists. He is greatly missed!” Instrumentation: 2 flutes doubling piccolo, oboe, 2 clarinets, bassoon, 2 horns, timpani, piano and strings.

MARCH - APRIL

1812 Overture, Op. 49 First performance of this work on the Classics Series. The 1812 Overture was a commissioned work, requested by Tchaikovsky’s friend and mentor, Nikolai Rubinstein, for a Moscow exhibition of arts and commerce. Coinciding with the exhibition would be the dedication ceremonies of the city’s splendid new Cathedral of Christ the Redeemer, built to celebrate the defeat of Napoleon’s invasion of Russia in 1812. Tchaikovsky planned a rousing patriotic piece to be performed in the square in front of the cathedral, involving full orchestra, added brass bands, adult chorus and children’s choir, and ringing of the bells of the cathedral and other nearby churches. The most novel touch was the inclusion of artillery guns, which the composer planned to have the conductor fire electrically by pressing a button at the podium. The obvious choice of subject was Napoleon’s retreat. After days of fierce but indecisive fighting at nearby Borodino, the Russian forces withdrew from Moscow and Napoleon marched in. The Russians, however, burned their capital to deny food and shelter to the enemy, and the French troops were unprepared for the bitter extremes of a Russian winter. Numbed by the cold and weakened by the fight, they left Moscow only 35 days after occupying it. Tchaikovsky’s music celebrates the battle and the city’s liberation. The concert overture begins with a quiet setting of a well-known Russian Orthodox hymn, “O God, Save Thy People,” suggesting the fears of war in peaceful Russia before the invasion. Martial music arises to disturb the calm. The French progress can be followed through the music by the quotations of the French national anthem, The Marseillaise, opposed by fragments of Russian folk songs (including “At the gate to father’s dear house”) and original themes. Moments of less agitated lyrical beauty signal lulls in the fighting. The final victory is celebrated with thundering cannons, joyously pealing church bells and a triumphal restatement of the Russian hymn joined by the Tsarist-era national anthem. There is no record the overture was ever performed before the cathedral as planned. The premiere took place indoors in an allTchaikovsky concert some two years later. The cathedral itself, a symbol of Tsarist authority, was demolished by Stalin and replaced with a swimming pool. It was rebuilt in the 1990s at great public expense. Instrumentation: 2 flutes and piccolo, 2 oboes and English horn, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 cornets, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, bass drum, cymbals, snare drum, triangle, tambourine, chimes and strings. – Program notes ©2009 by Nick Jones

THE POST-STANDARD CLASSICS SERIES

Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s “Luilekkerland” (“The Land of Cockaigne”), oil on panel, 1567.

Concerto No. 1 for Flute and String Orchestra This is the first performance of Jacob’s Flute Concerto on the Classics Series. The renaissance of British music that began with Edward Elgar was slowed in the generation that followed because so many promising musical talents were lost in the carnage of World War I. One who survived, although his brother was killed in the war, was Gordon Jacob, who enlisted at age 19, was wounded in heavy fighting, and ended the war as a prisoner at Bad Colberg, Germany. While there, he organized a prisoners’ orchestra (eight players, with himself as pianist) and wrote arrangements for them to play at concerts in the camp. Jacob became one of England’s most respected composers, who had a sober and traditional approach to composing but was able to apply a light or humorous touch when he chose. In the 1950s, he contributed Music for a Festival to the nationwide Festival of Britain and a fanfare-rich arrangement of the British national anthem to the coronation music for Queen Elizabeth II. Among his most popular works is the William Byrd Suite, composed while he was a student at the Royal College of Music. Based on keyboard music by Byrd, it was originally written for orchestra but is better known in the composer’s version for concert band. Among more than 700 works that Jacob published during his life are a number of symphonies, a sizable catalog of chamber music, much vocal and choral music, lots of band music, a small number of film scores, and concertos and solo works for almost all the instruments of the orchestra. He was a master arranger, whose versions for orchestra or band of music by Chopin, Liszt, Elgar, Holst and others have considerably enriched the literature. At the request of composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, his former teacher, Jacob arranged the orchestral version of Vaughan Williams’s English Folk Song Suite (originally written for band). 54

A number of Jacob’s arrangements were ballet suites based on music of various composers for the Sadler’s Wells Ballet. His only original ballet score, Uncle Remus, was also written for Sadler’s Wells. Jacob served for 40 years as a professor of composition, orchestration and music theory at the Royal College of Music. His students included Malcolm Arnold, Alexander Gibson and Imogen Holst. His textbooks, including Orchestral Technique and The Composer and His Orchestra, are valued resources for aspiring composers, and he contributed insightful articles as introductions in the Penguin series of study scores, of which he served as editor. He was honored as a Commander of the British Empire in 1968. Jacob is frequently said to have been a conservative composer, but that does not mean his music is dull or stuffy. He also hated what he considered the academic snobbery of much modern music of his day, once telling an interviewer, “The day that melody is discarded altogether, you may as well pack up Gordon Jacob music.” A case in point is his fourb. July 5, 1895 movement Flute Concerto No. 1 of 1951, which has an almost French in London, England sense of enjoying life. It was written d. June 8, 1984 for and dedicated to Gareth Morris, in Saffron Walden principal flutist of the Philharmonia Orchestra, who presumably was soloist at its premiere. Instrumentation: strings.

Smart Giving Thinks Local

Steve Jacobs, a consultant and former local business owner, stands with his wife Elaine in front of the Guardian Angel Society mural.

Running a business in Central New York was very rewarding, and has inspired us to give back to the community that supported us. Our success gave us the means to open a donor-advised fund at the Community Foundation, which offers a simple, flexible and cost-effective vehicle for managing our charitable giving. We closed our private foundation in favor of a donor-advised fund because of the low fees and ease of management. It is comforting to know that we can count on the Community Foundation as stewards of our permanent fund, faithfully executing our charitable wishes even after we are gone. We have been blessed with success, thanks to the support of our community over the years. We give locally as a way to show our appreciation, and invite others to join us in giving back through the Community Foundation. It truly is Where the Smart Money Gives.

THE CHRISTOPHER KEENE LEGACY SOCIETY

How to make a planned gift to the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra Thank you for considering a planned gift to help support the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. We know that if you make a contribution, it will be because you believe in what we do, and because you want to help make a difference in the lives of others. We’d also like to make sure you benefit from making a gift to us. The Christopher Keene Legacy Society is set up to recognize patrons who have decided to make a planned gift, ensuring the future excellence of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra.

Your planned giving options Will/Living Trust – You can name a beneficiary in your estate plan by visiting with your estate planning attorney and having a new will or revocable living trust drafted. If you already have these documents in place, you can easily make a beneficiary change by having your attorney draft a codicil to your existing will or an amendment to your revocable living trust. A specific bequest gives a specific dollar amount or asset “I give the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra $___ or designated asset.” A residuary bequest gives a percentage of your estate after other bequests are made. “I give ____ percent of the residue of my estate to the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra.” Life Insurance Policies – Life insurance is a popular method of providing much-needed fund to a beneficiary at your death. It is also a low-cost way to provide a large benefit for someone in need. Life insurance proceeds are almost always income tax-free to the beneficiary. Simply contact your insurance company for a change of beneficiary form You would then decide what percentage of the policy’s value you would like delegate. Life Income Gifts - A life income gift allows you to make a substantial gift of cash, appreciated securities or real estate, while retaining income for your lifetime. You can receive tax benefits such as charitable income tax deductions, avoidance of capital gains tax, increased and possibly tax-free income. Charitable Remainder Trusts and Charitable Lead Trusts are just two examples of life income gifts.
