Il Mare della Toscana ra i tanti motivi che spingono gli yachtsman a visitare la costa toscana, uno dei più convincenti è certo l’idea di un rilassante soggiorno al mare, in un ambiente in cui discrezione e privacy sono garantite. La Toscana infatti ha una lunga riviera che si estende per 330 chilometri circa, affacciata sul mar Ligure ed il mar Tirreno, cui vanno aggiunte tutte le bellissime isole dell’arcipelago toscano. Le coste toscane sono estremamente interessanti dal punto di vista paesaggistico, e le aree protette mantengono grandi porzioni praticamente incontaminate: il clima inoltre è sempre piacevole, influenzato dal benefico influsso del mare. La varietà dell’offerta toscana per le vacanze è straordinariamente ampia: se amate una spiaggia morbida e sabbiosa, tradizionali stabilimenti associati ai più moderni comfort e attività ricreative, la Versilia è la destinazione più adatta. Egregio Direttore, anche quest’anno accolgo con piacere l’invito di recare un saluto ai lettori e a tutti coloro i quali sceglieranno il mare di Viareggio e le spiagge della Versilia per trascorrere i mesi estivi. E’, infatti, passato un altro anno intenso per la Guardia Costiera di Viareggio che ci ha visto impegnati in mare, sulla costa e sempre al fianco di tutti i fruitori di questi impareggiabili beni. Protagonisti nell’operazione “Mare Sicuro” che abbiamo condotto per tutta la stagione estiva, così come per la prossima, alla luce delle direttive del Comando Generale e il coordina-

mento della Direzione Marittima della Toscana. Grazie anche al lavoro degli uomini e delle donne della Guardia Costiera di Viareggio, bagnanti e diportisti hanno potuto trascorrere il periodo più bello dell’anno all’insegna della gioia e della serenità potendo contare sulla nostra vigilanza e protezione. Abbiamo inoltre incontrato e ascoltato i più giovani, mettendo a frutto una mirata campagna d’informazione con le scuole avvicinando i ragazzi a una cultura del mare improntata al rispetto della propria vita e alla tutela dell’ambiente. Abbiamo assistito chi svolge una professione sul mare,

garantendo la sicurezza dell’ambiente di lavoro e vigilando sul rispetto delle condizioni di sicurezza della navigazione e del trasporto marittimo. Abbiamo verificato i corsi d’acqua interni che sfociano in mare al fine di garantire la salubrità delle acque della nostra bella Versilia. Tutto questo è stato possibile grazie all’apporto consolidato di tutti gli operatori portuali e demaniali che hanno la consapevolezza che i beni tutelati dalla Guardia Costiera costituiscono la linfa vitale per continuare a garantire lo sviluppo e la prosperità dell’approdo viareggino e di tutte le coste che lo circondano. Dear Director, This year as usual I welcome your invitation to send my regards to all readers and to all those people who will choose the sea of Viareggio and the beaches of Versilia to spend the summer months. It has been another year of hard work for the Coast Guard of Viareggio that saw us work at sea, on the coasts and always on the side of all the people who enjoy these unrivalled sights. In the forefront of “Mare Sicuro”, an initiative in support of safe seas we have been engaged in all summer, as we will, of course, next summer, in the light of the directives issued by Tuscany’s Maritime Authority. Partly with the help of the men and women of the Coast Guard of Viareggio, bathers and sailors could spend the best time of the year cheerfully and peacefully, relying on our surveillance and protection. In addition, we met and talked to the younger ones, developing a school-oriented information campaign to raise young people’s awareness of a culture of the sea based on the respect for their life and the protection of the environment. We assisted those who work at sea, making industrial environments safe and monitoring the safety standards of navigation and sea transport. We inspected the inland streams that flow into the sea to protect the health of the waters of our beautiful Versilia. We di all this with the long-established help of all the port and state professionals who are well aware that the heritage protected by the Coast Guard is vital to make sure the port of Viareggio and all the coasts that surround it can keep developing and prospering. AGENZIE MARITTIME lo Vannucci, gli eredi di sesta generazione, essendo stata sempre la famiglia impegnata, nei tanti anni trascorsi, nell’attività di spedizionieri marittimi. Ancora oggi, tra computer di ultima generazione e gadgets elettronici di vario tipo, fa bella mostra di sé la poltroncina imbottita e la scrivania in noce che furono di Carlo, il capostipite. Non appare a prima vista, ma all’interno degli uffici attuali, si tramanda una buona parte della Storia di quella Viareggio che sul mare ha costruito la sua tradizione e la sua identità, culturale, economica e sociale. Ecco apparire una sequenza davvero cospicua di carte nautiche, modellini navali, fotografie d’epoca, ritratti, dipinti e diplomi che tappezzano le pareti degli uffici, costituendo una significativa testimonianza di un impegno incessante della famiglia Vannucci.

SHIPPING AGENCIES Essa ha fatto crescere negli anni l’attività dell’Agenzia, ottenendo benemerenze per l’ottimo lavoro svolto e per la gestione delle imbarcazioni che furono di loro proprietà, barche che hanno fatto conoscere in tutti i porti del Mediterraneo il nome della famiglia Vannucci. Si trattava della “Felicina” di 2250 t.p.l. che naufragò nel Golfo di Taranto nel 1926, per un terribile fortunale e del motoveliero “Fiammetta” di 500 t.p.l. che venne colpito e affondato da aerei della Raf nel porto di Tripoli, nel 1941. Nella galleria dei ritratti esposti negli uffici dell’Agenzia il posto di rigore spetta alle immagini del fondatore Carlo, deceduto nel 1860, e di suo figlio Andrea –un nome spesso ricorrente nella famiglia—che ebbe a succedergli all’età di vent’anni. Ad essi si deve l’affermazione ed il successivo sviluppo dell’“A-

La famiglia Vannucci non ha operato soltanto a Viareggio, perché nel 1911, Benvenuto, un figlio del primo Andrea Vannucci si trasferì a Marsiglia per curare il ramo speciale del noleggio e delle spedizioni di velieri e vapori italiani per conto di una importante ditta francese. I suoi fratelli Mario e Atto rimasero tuttavia ben radicati sulle sponde del “Burlamacca” ed alla morte del padre - avvenuta nel 1928 - gli succedettero nella conduzione della oramai affermata azienda di famiglia, fino al 1952. Il successivo capostipite Andrea Vannucci potè contare sulla preziosa collaborazione dei figli Benvenuto a Carlo Andrea, e per continuare la saga familiare e portare l’Agenzia Marittima ai vertici della sua storia centenaria. La storia delle cinque generazioni dei Vannucci,

spedizionieri in Viareggio, che dal 1825 innalzano la propria insegna – una piccola quanto prestigiosa targa – al n.9 di piazza Pacini, una zona dove ancora si respirano le atmosfere magiche di una città, che nata sul mare, proprio da quest’area si espanse gradatamente, al di qua e al di là delle sponde del “Burlamacca”. Dalle scrivanie degli uffici è passata la documentazione di un infinito numero di trasporti marittimi, che in 187 anni di attività hanno raggiunto cifre realmente imponenti. Ancora presenti negli uffici, le atmosfere di sempre che paiono trasportarci indietro nel tempo, tra mobili antichi, foto ingiallite e carte bollate da 50 centesimi conservate nell’archivio dell’Agenzia. Si leggono contratti di noli, carati, di proprietà e comproprietà varie di velieri e motonavi: “Dreino”, “Rodrigo”, “Bagnaia”,

“Fernanda”, “Frandi”. E’ un po’ come ritrovare la dimensione di una Viareggio marittima, nucleo fondamentale di sviluppo di questa città, divenuta nel tempo anche mèta turistico-balneare affermata, la cui vocazione è andata a rafforzare in una speciale sinergia, culturale, economica e industriale la dimensione complessiva dell’intera città. Nell’evolversi dei tempi, l’Agenzia Vannucci ha particolarmente curato e seguito le spedizioni marittime di granaglie e semole verso l’Algeria e la Libia e gli arrivi di olio di oliva e olio vegetale dalla Grecia, Tunisia, Spagna e Marocco. Nel passato l’area Mediterranea creava movimenti di merci le più varie. Dalla Sicilia arrivavano sale, zolfo, grano, lupini, tonno in scatola e vini; dalla Spagna, Portogallo e Turchia, olio d’oliva e marmi e graniti pregiati; dalla Calabria le-

gname vario, dalla Francia materiali refrattari. Per i carichi, da Viareggio partivano un po’ per tutti i porti del Mediterraneo vetrerie, marmi semilavorati, mattonelle, graniglia, sabbia silicea e derrate varie. Viareggio era un porto molto attivo, pure nella sua caratteristica dimensione e chi vi operava, sia che fosse spedizioniere o capitano di imbarcazione, era conosciuto e stimato ad ogni latitudine. Una vicenda storica e professionale che ha caratterizzato l’evoluzione della dinastia Vannucci, traversando anni difficili ma sempre ricchi di valori e di impegno non comune. Anche dando una bella mano a mantenere viva e vitale l’immagine e il carattere di una Viareggio mercantile e marittima, che rappresentavano elementi sostanziali della cultura storica e delle tradizioni più genuine di questa città.

How a tradition is born, a tradition that goes on by Gianni Giampaoli We are not far from Marie-Louise of Bourbon’s places. Viareggio is changing, from a fishermen’s village into a fully accomplished town. In 1820, Marie-Louise, who loves the sea and is enchanted by the nature and woods of this village, decides to raise Viareggio to the rank of a town, starting, just a couple of years later, to build the first dockyards, which would be named: Darsena Lucca. Here comes Carlo Vannucci, who five years after such events opened the offices of the shipping agency that would become known as Agenzia Vannucci. These were pioneering years, but his professional style would soon get polished up, supporting the growth of the business, especially the sea shipping business. This is a very busy job. This is a job where service needs to be ready, reliable and knowledgeable at all times, even when something unexpected crops up, assisting ship-owners in any circumstance, offering them expertise and time. Learning about life and work, when, according to

the habits of the time, freights used to be paid in gold, silver and copper. That was the time of the “Tartane”, “Navicelli”, “Trabaccoli”, the small sailboats that carried the most diverse goods along the Mediterranean coasts. The offices of Agenzia Vannucci are home, in the same premises that were set up by Carlo Vannucci, to his sixth-generation heirs, as the family has always been working as shipping agents through all these years. The upholstered armchair and the walnut wood desk that belonged to Carlo, the founder, takes pride of place amidst latestgeneration computers and all sorts of electronic gadgets. It may not feel like that, but the current offices hand down a good share of the history of that Viareggio that has built its tradition and its cultural, economic and social identity around the sea. Here’s a really striking sequence of charts, ship models, vintage photographs, portraits, paintings and diplomas plastered over every wall of the offices, as pregnant evidence of

the Vannucci family’s relentless efforts. Over the years, they have made the Agency grow, earning accolades for their excellent work and for managing the boats they had, boats that have made the Vannucci family’s name known in all of the Mediterranean ports. They were the 2250 dwt “Felicina”, which was wrecked in the Gulf of Taranto in 1926, as a result of a terrible storm, the 500 dwt motor sailboat “Fiammetta” which was hit and sunk by RAF aircrafts in the port of Tripoli, in 1941. In the portrait gallery of the agency’s offices, pride of place is given to the pictures of Carlo, the founder, who died in 1860, and his son Andrea –an often recurring name in the family –, who replaced him at the age of twenty. The success and growth of the shipping agency over the years are owed to them. The Vannucci family did not just work in Viareggio, because in 1911, Benvenuto, one of Andrea Vannucci’s children, moved to Marseille to take care of a special branch, the freight and

shipment of Italian sailboats and steamships, on behalf of an important French company. His brothers Mario and Atto, however, firmly clung to the banks of the “Burlamacca” and, on their father’s death – in 1928 –, they took his place at the helm of the then successful family business until 1952. The next founder, Andrea Vannucci, could rely on the precious help of his sons Benvenuto and CarlAndrea, to continue the family saga and take the shipping agency to the peaks of its centuries-old history. This is the history of the five generations of the Vannucci family, shipping agents in Viareggio, who since 1825 have put their sign – a small but equally prestigious plate – at no. 9 Piazza Pacini, an area where one can still breathe the magical atmospheres of a town, which, born on the sea, gradually sprawled out of this neighbourhood, to settle on both sides of the “Burlamacca”. The shipping agency’s desks have handled the papers of a multitude of sea shipments, which,

over 187 years of work, have achieved really impressive figures. Old-time atmospheres are still lingering in the offices, like a walk down memory lane, amidst ancient furniture, yellowed photographs and 50-cent stamped papers, held in the agency’s archives. You can read deeds about freights, shares, all sorts of ownerships and joint ownerships of sailboats and motorships: “Dreino”, “Rodrigo”, Bagnaia”, “Fernanda”, “Frandi”. It feels a bit like finding again the maritime dimension of Viareggio, the essential core of the development of this town, which over time has also turned into a popular tourist and seaside resort, with its inclination strengthening the overall dimension of the entire city, in a unique cultural, economic and industrial synergism. With the changing of times, Agenzia Vannucci specialised in shipments of grains and cereals to Algeria and Libya and deliveries of olive oil and vegetable oil from Greece, Tunisia, Spain and Morocco. In the past, the Mediter-

ranean area originated flows of the widest range of goods. Salt, sulphur, wheat, lupines, canned tuna and wines came from Sicily; olive oil and valuable marble and granite came from Spain, Portugal and Turkey; timber from Calabria, bricks from France. Cargoes of glassware, semifinished marble, tiles, chippings, silica sand and all sorts of foodstuffs left Viareggio for virtually all of the Mediterranean ports. Viareggio was a very busy port, despite its peculiar size, and those who worked there, whether they were shipping agents or captains, were known and respected the all over the world. A historical and professional process, the one experienced by the Vannucci dynasty, going through times that however tough were always full of unrivalled values and efforts. Not least, substantially helping to keep alive the image and character of a maritime, merchant Viareggio, which were key features in the heritage and in the most genuine traditions of this town.

Con la sua forma di mezzaluna l’isola di Giannutri è la più a sud dell’Arcipelago Toscano e si raggiunge da Porto Santo Stefano oppure dall’isola del Giglio. Alla cala Maestra si trova l’unica spiaggetta dell’isola dove è possibile fare il bagno. L’isola di Montecristo è un paradiso per pochi fortunati. Qui infatti vivono solo il custode e la sua famiglia: dal 1988 è stata istituita una zona di tutela biologica intorno all’isola per un’estensione di 1000 mt dalla costa e possono accedere solo 1000 visitatori l’anno, guidati dal personale del Corpo Forestale. L’isola di Gorgona, la più piccola delle sette, è sede di una colonia penale, perciò la sua visita è vincolata al permesso della Direzione Generale degli Istituti di Prevenzione e Pena del Ministero di Grazia e Giustizia. L’isola di Pianosa come dice il suo nome è l’unica pianeggiante. Nel 1858 vi fu istituita una colonia penale chiusa solo nel 1997. Da allora nell’isola sono presenti solo una ventina i detenuti in regime di semilibertà che si occupano della ristrutturazione di alcuni edifici.

The Tuscan sea, its islands and their uncontaminated beaches, an archipelago full of history and legends, a dream holiday all sea lovers have fantasised about. The Park’s seven islands are the gems of Venus’ necklace fallen into the sea, as the legend goes. A crystal-clear sea and Mediterranean scrub, pine-woods looking out onto sheer cliffs, secluded bays and large, soft sandy beaches. The Tuscan Archipelago is an exciting land, which hides spots of wildlife and sea beds you can discover in the summer. Seven are the islands that compose it: seven gems of beauty, all different, all full of history and protected by the national Oasis of the Tuscan Archipelago, set up to protect this extraordinary natural habitat. The main island is Elba, Italy’s third largest island after Sardinia and Sicily, known all over the world for having been home to an exiled Napoleon in 1814. A land with 147 km of coasts, providing visitors with ever different beaches: from golden sandy beaches to rocks and even a black beach, where the sand is darkened by iron ores. Actually, Elba is rich in ores and it had been a mining place for a long time. The Giglio island is a veritable wildlife oasis, taking its name from the Greek ”aegilion”, island of goats, probably because of its mountainous soil that is only fit for animals living on rocks. Capraia is the only volcanic island in the Archipelago and takes its name from the wild goats that used to live on the island. A gem of wild beauty: it seems a few rare specimens of harbour seals still live in some caves on the western side of the island. The crescent-shaped Giannutri is the southernmost island of the Tuscan Archipelago and can be reached from Porto Santo Stefano or Giglio Island. The island’s only bathing beach is Cala Maestra. The island of Montecristo is a heaven for the lucky few. Only the guardian and his family live here: in 1988 a wildlife protection area was set up around the island, extending 1000 metres into the sea, and the island is open to just 1,000 visitors a year, led by Forestry Corps staff. Gorgona, the smallest of the seven islands, hosts a penal settlement, so visits must be authorised by the General Prison Management of the Ministry of JUstice. Pianosa means flat and it actually is the only flat island. In 1858, a penal settlement was established there, which stayed open until 1997. Since then, the island has been home to just about twenty convicts on part-time detention, who are engaged in the renovation of some buildings.

Il nome “Aegylon” fu dato all’isola dai Greci intorno al 1000 a.C. ed il suo significato è “posto di capre”. Il nome attuale di Capraia deriva invece dal latino Capraria, originato a sua volta dal termine etrusco “capra”, che voleva dire “roccia”. L’etimologia del suo nome ci riporta ad un’altra importante caratteristica dell’isola: la sua origine vulcanica, il suo essere aspra e rocciosa. Più vicina alla Corsica che all’Italia (13 miglia contro 36), l’isola di Capraia è la terza per estensione dell’Arcipelago Toscano. Colpiscono i colori delle sue rocce vulcaniche, le coste scoscese, il territorio intatto coperto di macchia mediterranea. Il porto con la sua anima marina è collegato al paese dalla sola strada asfaltata dell’isola, lunga un chilometro. Le escursioni a Capraia si svolgono in parte su sentieri in terrapieno costruiti in età napoleonica, in parte su nuovi percorsi tracciati per incoraggiare un turismo naturalistico. Fra le mete più interessanti si può ricordare in primo luogo lo Stagnone,

un laghetto che a primavera è tutto fiorito di piante acquatiche. È l’unico invaso naturale di acqua dolce dell’arcipelago e, trovandosi lungo uno dei più noti corridoi migratori tra l’Africa e l’Europa, è un punto obbligato di sosta e di riproduzione per numerose specie di volatili. Nei pressi si estende il Piano, l’antico insediamento romano, oggi attorniato dalle viti che un tempo ricoprivano l’isola. Oggi ne sono rimasti tre ettari e mezzo, da cui una piccola azienda agricola biologica ricava un vino rosato e un passito. In tutto solo ottomila bottiglie, ma hanno il sapore di quest’isola. Chi cerchi orizzonti più vasti deve salire al Monte Arpagna e al Monte le Penne, da cui la vista spazia su un panorama marino dominato dalla Corsica. Richiede almeno tre ore solo di andata il faro dello Zenobito, che sulla punta estrema dell’isola domina il cratere di Cala Rossa. Più brevi le discese alle Cale, dal vicinissimo Zurletto, alla più lontana Cala del Ceppo. E naturalmente non si possono perdere i vecchi insediamenti dell’ex Colonia Penale, con le celle e i dipartimenti pericolanti, che possono essere visitati con qualche cautela.

CAPRAIA A WILD PARADISE

The name “Aegylon” was given to the island by the Greeks circa 1000 BC along with its meaning as a “land of goats”. The current name, Capraia, comes instead from the Latin Capraria, which in turn comes from the Etruscan “capra”, meaning “rock”. The etymology of the name reminds us of another important feature of the island: its volcanic origin, its harsh and rocky character. Closer to Corsica than to Italy (13 miles vs 36), the Isle of Capraia is the third largest island in the Tuscan Archipelago. The colours of its volcanic rocks, its steep coasts, its intact Mediterranean scrub, are impressive. The harbour, with its famous marina, is connected to the town by just one 1km-long asphalt road. In Capraia, some excursions take place on embanked trails built in the Napoleonic age, some on new trails designed to attract natureloving tourists, although this kind of tourism has not taken off yet. One of the most interesting destinations is definitely Stagnone, a pond that blooms with water plants in springtime. It is the only natural freshwater reservoir in the archipelago and, as it is located along one of the most famous migration routes between Africa and Europe, it is a place where lots of bird species stop and reproduce. Next to it is the Piano, the ancient Roman settlement, now surrounded by the vineyards that used to grow all over the island. There are now only three and a half hectares, from which a small organic farm makes a rose wine and a sweet raisin wine. Just eight thousand bottles overall, but they have the flavour of the island. Those who look for wider horizons should climb up Mount Arpagna and Mount Le Penne, offering views of a sea landscape overlooked by Corsica. It takes at least three hours just to go to the Zenobito lighthouse, which, at the extreme end of the island, towers over the crater of Cala Rossa. The roads down to the coves, from the nearby Zurletto to the more distant Ceppo, are shorter. And of course one cannot miss the old penal colony, with its crumbling cells and departments, which may be visited with some caution.

Cinquanta spiagge e innumerevoli calette di sabbia dorata e di candida ghiaia sempre pronte ad offrirti un angolo di tranquillità in qualsiasi stagione. Questa è l’Elba: un’isola dal mare smeraldo, dai venti dolci e suadenti, dai boschi verdi e colorati, dalla gente calda e ospitale.

In ogni momento dell’anno, l’isola del Giglio sa come conquistare turisti e visitatori che vogliano perdersi nelle sue bellezze naturali, nel fascino del suo mare incontaminato, nei suoi sapori e i suoi colori. Il territorio, quasi interamente di granito, è ricco di rocce rosa alte e scoscese a picco sul mare. Tutta la costa è frastagliata da numerosissimi scogli intervallati solo da calette, baie e dalla più ampia spiaggia di Campese. Il suo clima mite e temperato permette ai visitatori sempre una vacanza senza sorprese. Nell’isola, flora e fauna sono di grande interesse e la macchia mediterranea si fonde con gli oliveti e le vigne profumate da cui si ricava il pregiato vino bianco Ansonica. Oggi la popolazione è concentrata nei tre centri di Giglio Porto, Giglio Castello e Campese. Giglio Porto è un piacevole villaggio adagiato lungo un’insenatura racchiusa da due moli e dal retrostante anfiteatro collinare terrazzato a vigneti. Da qui una strada stretta e tortuosa sale a Giglio Castello, il borgo che ha conservato il suo antico aspetto fortificato con le alte mura medioevali e le torri che ancora lo cingono. Il centro è costituito da un dedalo di vicoli sormontati da archi, oscuri sottopassaggi, ripide scalinate e vecchie case addossate le une alle altre e dominate dall’alta Rocca Pisana. Sulla costa occidentale dell’isola sorge Campese, al centro di una baia orlata da un’ampia spiaggia sabbiosa, impreziosita dalla presenza di un’imponente Torre eretta ai tempi di Ferdinando I dé Medici. La piccola Giannutri dista pochi chilometri dal Giglio e, nell’avvicinarsi, dà subito l’impressione di essere uscita dal mondo mitologico degli antichi navigatori mediterranei. La profilano nel cielo tre poggi di calcare: Capel Rosso, Monte Mario e Poggio Cannone; la costa, fra scogli levigati a picco sul mare, è aperta dalle insenature di Golfo Spalmatoi e Cala Maestra. Chiamata Artemisia dai Greci e Diana dai Romani, per la sua forma ad arco, oggetto preferito dalle divinità, l’isola conserva ancora oggi intatto il suo fascino storico e ambientalistico. Già nobili famiglie romane dell’età imperiale ne riconobbero la bellezza facendone un luogo privilegiato di ritiro e riposo. Varie e importanti sono le testimonianze storiche che arricchiscono la visita. Nei pressi di Cala Maestra si trova uno dei principali siti archeologici di tutto l’Arcipelago, la villa dei Domizi Enobarbi, sontuoso edificio di cui oggi rimangono alcune colonne con capitelli a stile composito, eretta su questa meravigliosa terrazza naturale che si affaccia sul Tirreno. Completano la visita altre costruzioni romane riguardanti il porto presso Cala dello Spalmatoio e quattro edifici fra Poggio dello Sperone e Poggio Cannone. Nell’isola non ci sono alberghi e il campeggio è vietato, essendo totalmente privata, ma aperta ai visitatori grazie a visite guidate organizzate sia dall’isola del Giglio che da Porto Santo Stefano.

Any time of the year, the Giglio island knows how to conquer those tourists and visitors who wish to get lost in its beautiful natural sights, in the charm of its uncontaminated sea, in its flavours and in its colours. This area, virtually all made of granite, is full of high, steep sheer cliffs. All of the coast is broken by countless rocks, interspersed with just a few coves, bays and the large beach of Campese. Because of its mild and temperate climate, visitors may be sure their holidays will not be spoiled by any nasty surprise. In the island, the wildlife is extremely interesting and the Mediterranean scrub blends into the olive groves and the scented vineyards, which produce the excellent Ansonica white wine. Nowadays, the population mainly lives in the three centres of Giglio Porto, Giglio Castello and Campese. Giglio Porto is a nice village along a cove enclosed by two piers behind which is an amphitheatre of hills with terraced vineyards. From there, a narrow, winding road climbs up to Giglio Castello, a village that retains its ancient fortified appearance with high medieval walls and towers all around it. The centre is a maze of alleys, with arches on top, dark tunnels, steep steps and old houses nestling against each other, overlooked by the high Rocca Pisana. Campese is on the western coast of the island, in the midst of a bay edged by a vast sandy beach, embellished by a massive Tower erected at the time of Ferdinando I deâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Medici.

The small Giannutri is just a few kilometres from Giglio, and, as you get closer to it, it looks like something out of the mythological world of ancient Mediterranean seamen. Its skyline is edged by three limestone hillocks: Capel Rosso, Monte Mario and Poggio Cannone; the coast, edged by polished cliffs, is opened up by the coves of Golfo Spalmatoi and Cala Maestra. Called Artemisia by the Greeks and Diana by the Romans, because it was shaped like a bow, the godsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; favourite object, the island has lost nothing of its historical or natural attractions. As early as the Imperial age, some noble Roman families had noticed its beauty and made it a special resting place and retreat. Excursions are enriched by several important historical vestiges. Near Cala Maestra, you can find one of the main archaeological sites of the Archipelago, the villa of the Domitian Enobarbi family, a sumptuous building of which just a few composite-style pillars have survived, erected on this wonderful natural terrace that looks out onto the Tyrrhenian Sea. The tour is completed by a visit to other Roman buildings, such as the port at Cala dello Spalmatoio and four buildings between Poggio dello Sperone and Poggio Cannone. There are no hotels on the island, and camping is forbidden, as it is all privately owned, but it is open to visitors coming on guided tours from Giglio Island and Porto Santo Stefano.

Era quasi certamente un’isola il Monte Argentario, che oggi si presenta come un promontorio nell’estremità meridionale della costa Toscana. Con l’Argentario si chiude idealmente anche la Maremma, mentre al largo si osservano i profili di due celebri isole dell’Arcipelago Toscano: Giannutri e il Giglio. Chi giunge qui via terra può noleggiare facilmente imbarcazioni per una giornata o un weekend. Sono a disposizione anche gommoni veloci per gite turistiche nell’Arcipelago Toscano, o barche capienti per immersioni o battute di pesca, che ospitano fino a dodici subacquei con equipaggiamento. I detriti spinti dai fiumi e dalle correnti marine portarono alla formazione delle due singolari strisce sabbiose, Giannella e Feniglia, che attualmente costituiscono l’unico collegamento fra l’Argentario e la terraferma, assieme alla diga di Orbetello. Le dune della Feniglia, in particolare, hanno conservato il loro aspetto selvaggio e sono tuttora ricoperte da una fitta pineta. L’entroterra è un paradiso naturale dominato dalla macchia mediterranea, solo a tratti interrotta da uliveti plurisecolari, frutteti e da pittoreschi terrazzamenti che arrivano fin sul mare: qui si coltivano vitigni pregiati come l’Ansonico e il Riminese. La costa, alta e rocciosa, è un susseguirsi di falesie interrotte spesso da insenature e calette dove è difficile resistere alla tentazione di gettare l’ancora e tuffarsi in un mare sempre incontaminato, ricco sia sotto il profilo biologico, sia sotto quello archeologico. Lungo questa costa dal profilo tormentato crescono, spontaneamente, rarissimi esemplari della famosa palma nana. Lo spettacolo naturale dell’Argentario, meta prediletta dai sub ma anche dagli escursionisti che preferiscono lasciarsi alle spalle la costa per fare rotta verso i 635 metri del Monte Telegrafo, inizia a Porto Ercole, sul versante sud-orientale, dove i Fenici furono i primi a stabilire una piccola colonia, attratti dalla posizione strategica e riparata. Qui gli spagnoli realizzarono un poderoso e complesso sistema militare difensivo, con ben tre fortezze tra cui il rinascimentale Forte Stella, oggi lambito dalla strada panoramica. L’architettura militare spagnola si aggiunse, così, alle torri di avvistamento costiere erette un secolo prima dalla Repubblica di Siena per far fronte alle incursioni dei pirati. Anche il nucleo storico del paese è racchiuso nelle sue antiche mura, con la Torre dell’Orologio a guardia dell’unica porta d’accesso. Lo sviluppo turistico di Porto Ercole, brulicante di vita fino a notte, è tale

da rendere problematico, in alta stagione, l’attracco ai pontili. Nei giorni di punta può essere necessario ripiegare sulla vicina Cala Galera, una delle baie più suggestive ai piedi del Monte Filippo, dove trovano posto circa settecento scafi. Porto Ercole è il punto di partenza ideale per effettuare il periplo del promontorio: lasciandosi alle spalle il porto, si può ormeggiare vicino all’Isolotto (poco più che uno scoglio dai contorni simili a quelli di un grosso pesce) per un primo tuffo in un mare cristallino. Presso Punta Avoltore, dove sorge una delle tante torri d’avvistamento, si ammira l’Elefante Bianco: la villa dei reali d’Olanda. Un sottilissimo braccio di mare divide la punta di Torre Ciana dalla meravigliosa Isola Rossa, un punto di riferimento per lo snorkeling e le immersioni subacquee, con i suoi fondali ricchissimi di organismi vegetali e animali. Sul ciglio della parete rocciosa di Capo d’Uomo, da una torre diroccata del periodo senese a 350 metri sul mare, un panorama mozzafiato abbraccia le isole del Giglio e di Giannutri e un lunghissimo tratto di costa. La torre, naturalmente, è raggiungibile solo attraverso un sentiero che parte dalla strada panoramica. Fra Cala Piccola e Cala Grande ci si imbatte nell’isolotto di Argentarola, un altro suggestivo spuntone di roccia affiorante dal mare. Un’immersione in questo tratto, o nella grotta sommersa di Argentarola, permette di ammirare coloratissime gorgonie gialle e rosse che offrono rifugio a moltissime specie: murene, musdee, gronghi, polpi, scorfani, aragoste. Non sono esclusi anche avvistamenti di branchi di ricciole o addirittura di barracuda. Fra gli approdi più affascinanti c’è, poi, Cala Grande, incorniciata da ulivi e dalla più rigogliosa vegetazione mediterranea. La baia è accessibile anche via terra, con un bel sentiero immerso nel verde. Superata la Secca della Cacciarella, una caletta più raccolta per gli

amanti della solitudine, e doppiata la punta del faro, si giunge infine a Porto Santo Stefano, la più importante località turistica dell’Argentario. Fra le tante popolazioni giunte sul versante nord del promontorio, solo i Romani hanno lasciato traccia del loro passaggio: presso il tombolo della Giannella si trovano i resti semi-sommersi della villa romana appartenuta alla famiglia dei Domizi Enobarbi. Merita una visita soprattutto la massiccia Fortezza Spagnola, costruita all’inizio del Seicento, dove sono esposti i tesori archeologici recuperati dai fondali dell’Argentario.

TUSCAN SEAS: THE UNSEEN SIGHTS THE SKIPPERS’ SECRET LANDING PLACES It must certainly have been an island, Mount Argentario, now standing as a headland at the southern end of the Tuscan coast. Argentario ideally ends Maremma as well, while off the shore you can see the silhouettes of two famous islands of the Tuscan Archipelago: Giannutri and Giglio. If you walk up here, then you can easily rent a boat for the day or for the weekend. You can also find a motor dinghy for a trip through the Tuscan Archipelago or a bigger boat for diving or fishing, seating up to twelve divers and their equipment. The debris pushed along by rivers and ocean currents formed two peculiar strips of sand, Giannella and Feniglia, which are currently the only connection between Argentario and the mainland, apart from the Orbetello dam. The dunes of Feniglia are those that have best preserved their wild appearance and are still covered in thick pinewoods. The inland is a wildlife oasis, overrun by Mediter-

ranean scrub, only partly dotted with centuries-old olive groves, orchards and picturesque terraces descending down to the sea: excellent vines, such as Ansonico and Riminese, are grown here. The tall, rocky coast is a sequence of cliffs, often interspersed with inlets and coves, where you will hardly resist the temptation to drop anchor and dive into a still uncontaminated sea, full of biological and archaeological surprises. Extremely rare specimens of the famous dwarf palm spontaneously grow along this anguished-looking coast. The naturally spectacular sight of Argentario, a favourite with divers as well as with trekkers who would rather leave the coast behind and head for the 635 metres of Mount Telegrafo, begins in Porto Ercole, on the south-eastern side, where the Phoenicians were the first population to set up a small colony, attracted by this strategic, sheltered location. Here, the Spanish set up a powerful, complicated military defensive system, with as many as three fortresses, such as the Renaissance Forte Stella, currently flanked by a scenic road. So, this Spanish military architecture came to add up to the coastal watchtowers built one century earlier by the Republic of Siena as defence against the pirates’ raids. The old village too is enclosed by ancient walls, with the Clock Tower watching over the only gate. The development of Porto Ercole into a tourist attraction, brimming with life until late at night, is so huge that in the high season boats may have problems finding free moorings at night. On peak days, boats may have to settle for the nearby Cala Galera, one of the quaintest coves, at the foot of Mount Filippo, which can accommodate up to 700 boats. Porto Ercole is the ideal starting place to sail round the headland: leaving the port behind, you can moor at the Isolotto (little more than a rock, shaped like a big fish) for a first dip in crystalline-clear waters. At Punta Avoltore, where one of the many

watchtowers stands, you can see the Elefante Bianco, the White Elephant: the villa of the Dutch Royal Family. An extremely thin inlet separates the tip of Torre Ciana from the lovely Isola Rossa, a snorkelling and diving landmark, its seabed teeming with wildlife. On the brim of the rocky walls of Capo d’Uomo, from a dilapidated tower of the Sienese age, standing 350 metres above sea level, a breath-taking view embraces the Islands Giglio and Giannutri as well as an extremely long stretch of coast. The tower is of course only accessible by walking down the scenic road. Between Cala Piccola and Cala Grande, you will bump into the islet of Argentarola, another picturesque spur of rock rising out of the water. A dive into this stretch of sea or in the underwater grotto of Argentarola will take you to see brightly-coloured red and yellow sea-fans, providing shelter to lots of species: morays, morids, sea-eels, octopuses, scorpion fish and lobsters. You might even get a glimpse of a school of amberjacks and even barracudas. Then, one of the finest landing places is Cala Grande, set amidst olive trees and the most luxuriant Mediterranean vegetation. The bay is also accessible through a path surrounded by greenery. Past the Cacciarella shallows, here is a more secluded cove for those who prize their privacy, and, after rounding the tip of the lighthouse, you will finally be in Porto Santo Stefano, the most important tourist resort on Argentario. Of the many populations that reached the northern side of the headland, only the Romans have left their traces: at the Giannella tombolo, you can see, partly rising out of the water, the remains of the Roman villa that belonged to the Domitian Oenobarbus family. The massive Spanish Fortress built in the early 17th century, which is home to archaeological treasures from the seabed of Argentario, is certainly worth a visit.

La leggenda di San Galgano Guidotti, figlio di Guido e Dionisa, nacque nel 1148 a Chiusdino, un piccolo borgo nei pressi di Siena, non lontano dall’Abbazia. Durante questo periodo del Medioevo vi era un susseguirsi di violenze e ingiustizie gratuite, manifestazioni di un’apparente forza e vitalità, che spesso avevano lo scopo di estendere i propri domini. Anche Galgano, proprio come tutti gli altri cavalieri, nel pieno del vigore della sua gioventù, aveva un carattere arrogante e autoritario. Ma più il tempo passava e più Galgano sentiva la sua vita inutile, priva di qualunque scopo. Decise quindi di cambiare vita e si ritirò sulla collina di Montesiepi, poco distante da Monticiano. Galgano cominciò a condurre la sua vita in isolamento e in penitenza, ricercando affannosamente Dio e la pace che gli negava l’epoca turbolenta in cui viveva. Come forma di rinuncia totale ad ogni forma di violenza Galgano conficcò la sua spada in una roccia che spuntava dal terreno, con l’intento di adoperarla come croce dinanzi a cui pregare. Questo accadeva nell’anno 1180 e fu un gesto simbolico di grande forza per i tempi che correvano. Galgano morì il 3 dicembre 1181 appoggiato alla sua croce e nel 1185 fu proclamato Santo da Papa Lucio III.

The Abbey of San Galgano The sword in the stone and other legends The legend about San Galgano Galgano Guidotti, son of Guido and Dionisa, was born in 1148 at Chiusdino, a little village near Siena, not far from the Abbey. During this time in the Middle Ages, there was no end to unwarranted violence and injustice, apparently the expressions of strength and vigour which often aimed to extend boundaries. Galgano too, just like any other knight, in the prime of his youth, was arrogant and authoritative. But, as time went by, Galgano felt his life become increasingly useless, purposeless. So, he decided to change his life and retreated up the hill of Montesiepi, not far from Monticiano. Galgano began to live in isolation and penitence, eagerly looking for God and for the peace he was denied by the stormy time he was living in. As proof that he would give up on any form of violence, Galgano thrust his sword into a stone cropping out of the ground, to use it as a cross in front of which he would kneel and pray. This happened in 1180 and it was a very powerful symbolic gesture for those times. Galgano died on December 3rd, 1181, leaning against his cross, and, in 1185, he was proclaimed saint by Pope Lucius III.

L’Abbazia di San Galgano è uno splendore: vedere comparire la sua sagoma tra i cipressi del viale che le sta davanti, è davvero uno spettacolo che non si dimentica. Lo stupore aumenta man mano che ci si avvicina, accorgendosi che la sagoma quasi intatta delle mura esterne non ha il tetto. L’abbazia cistercense fu edificata nel 1218 con diversi materiali come il travertino, soprattutto per gli esterni, il mattone e il sasso accapezzato. E’ stata costruita con pianta a croce latina a tre navate, per una lunghezza di 72 metri ed una larghezza di 21. L’abside, che finisce con sei monofore ed un rosone, dona a tutto l’edificio un meraviglioso senso di leggerezza e raffinatezza. La maestosità dell’abbazia testimonia il grande seguito del culto di San Galgano. Nel XIV secolo raggiunse momenti di grande splendore grazie all’immunità e ai privilegi imperiali di cui godeva. L’abbazia fu sotto la tutela degli imperatori Enrico VI, Ottone IV e Federico II. La grande ricchezza raggiunta nel Cinquecento scatenò forti polemiche tra la Repubblica di Siena ed il Papato. Nel 1506 papa Giulio II inviò l’interdetto contro Siena che però si ribellò ordinando ai sacerdoti di celebrare regolarmente tutte le funzioni liturgiche. A questo periodo sfolgorante, ne seguì uno di decadenza che avrebbe ridotto l’abbazia a un misterioso rudere abbandonato ma pur sempre imponente. The Abbey of San Galgano is a magnificent sight: its silhouette, standing out amidst the cypress trees, is a real sight, something that cannot be easily forgotten. And it grows even more amazing as you get closer to it, noticing that the almost intact outline of its outer walls has no roof. The Cistercian abbey was built in 1218 in a wide range of materials, including travertine, especially in the exterior facings, bricks and abutting stones. It was designed in a Latin cross with a nave and two aisles, 72 metres long and 21 metres wide. The apse, which ends in six single-lancet windows and one rose window, gives the entire building a wonderfully light and elegant feel. The imposing proportions of the abbey are evidence of the great following of the cult of San Galgano. In the XIV century, it reached peaks of splendour because of the immunity and the imperial privileges conferred to it. The abbey was under the protection of Emperors Henry VI, Otto IV and Frederick II. The great wealth it achieved in the sixteenth century sparked fierce controversies between the Republic of Siena and the Papacy. In 1506, Pope Julius II placed Siena under an interdict, which the city rebelled to by ordering its priests to regularly celebrate all liturgical services. This dazzling period was followed by a time of decadence, which would reduce the abbey to a mysterious dilapidated, but nevertheless impressive, ruin.

Questa spada conficcata in un masso roccioso che spunta dal pavimento, è situata al centro della Rotonda di Montesiepi, in una cappella distante poche centinaia di metri dall’Abbazia di San Galgano. A giudicare dalla parte visibile che sporge dalla roccia, sembra che si tratti di una spada autentica del XII secolo. Questa spada ha subito diverse peripezie nel corso del tempo: fu spezzata da un vandalo nel 1960 e nel 1991 fu spaccata da un ragazzo che, rinchiuso nella rotonda con dei turisti, tentò di estrarla. Tutte queste rotture hanno creato dei dubbi sull’autenticità della spada, voci che poi furono smentite dall’ispezione ufficiale del manufatto nel 2001. Alcuni studiosi sostengono che ci siano delle analogie tra la vicenda di San Galgano e quella di Re Artù poiché entrambi i fatti si verificarono nel XII secolo e inoltre tra Galgano e il nome di uno dei cavalieri arturiani, Galvano, esistono delle particolari similitudini. Quello che sappiamo per certo è che esiste questa spada curiosamente inflitta in una roccia che ci riporta l’eco di segreti antichi e lontani mai svelati.

This sword, thrust into a rocky stone cropping out of the floor, can be found at the centre of the Hermit of Montesiepi, in a chapel a few hundred metres from the Abbey of San Galgano. To judge by the visible part sticking of the stone, it seems to be a real XIIcentury sword. This sword has had its ups and downs over time: it was broken up by a vandal in 1960, and in 1991 it was broken up by a boy who, locked up in the hermit with some tourists, tried to pull it out. All these breaks aroused doubts about the authenticity of the sword, rumours that were eventually dispelled by an official inspection of the sword in 2001. Some experts believe there are some similarities between St Galgano’s life and King Arthur’s life, as both events happened in the XII century and, moreover, the name Galgano sounds very much like the name of one of King Arthur’s knights, Galvano. What we know for sure is that there is this sword, intriguingly thrust into a stone, bringing us echoes of ancient and distant secrets that have never been revealed.

La Galleria degli Uffizi di Firenze è uno di quei luoghi d’arte dove, almeno ogni tanto, è bello ritornare. Ovviamente è uno dei musei più conosciuti, amati e frequentati del mondo che ospita una collezione di opere d’arte dal valore inestimabile, iniziata da quella famiglia Medici che tanto fece per la città e per conservare il suo patrimonio artistico. Per chi non conosce la storia dell’arte e vuole farsi un’idea precisa del susseguirsi dei diversi periodi storici gli Uffizi sono un luogo perfetto perché nelle sue sale sono esposte opere che vanno dal VI al V secolo a.C fino al XIX secolo d.C. E poi il museo stesso è un’opera d’arte, con il suo nucleo più antico e quella meravigliosa opera del Vasari, il cosiddetto Corridoio Vasariano, una via segreta sull’Arno che collega Palazzo Vecchio al quartiere d’Oltrarno e da lì al Giardino di Boboli e a Palazzo Pitti. Un museo, dunque, che è parte integrante del cuore della città ma che appartiene al mondo intero per il grande valore delle opere esposte. Impensabile elencare tutti gli incredibili capolavori ospitati nelle sue sale. Certo chi visita gli Uffizi per la prima volta rimane incantato dalla raccolta di opere di Sandro Botticelli, una collezione unica, che non ha eguali in nessun altro luogo – basti pensare a la Primavera e alla celeberrima Nascita di Venere . Ma da non perdere, naturalmente, anche le opere di Giotto, Leonardo da Vinci e Raffaello, geni dell’arte che non hanno bisogno di presentazione e quelle di Mantegna, Tiziano, Parmigianino, Rembrant e Caravaggio ( con la sua terrificante Medusa). Meraviglia tra le centinaia di meraviglie che abitano gli Uffizi l’Adorazione dei Magi di Gentile da Fabriano, probabilmente una delle più suggestive e interessanti mai dipinte.

A day at the Uffizi The Uffizi Gallery in Florence is one of those places of art where, at least once in a while, it is nice to go back. It is of course one of the best known, loved and crowded places in the world, home to a collection of priceless works of art, first started by that Medici family that did so much for the city and for its artistic heritage. For those who do not know art history and wish to have a clear idea of the sequence of history, the Uffizi is a perfect place, because its halls exhibit works from the VI to the V century BC through to the XIX century AD. And then the museum is a work of art itself, with its oldest part and that wonderful work by Vasari, the so-called Vasari Corridor, a secret road on the Arno connecting Palazzo Vecchio to the Oltrarno neighbourhood and from there to the Boboli Gardens and Palazzo Pitti. A museum, then, that is an integral part of the city’s heart but belongs to the whole world because of the priceless value of its exhibits. Listing all the incredible masterpieces that are in its rooms would be an unimaginable feat. Of course, first-time visitors never fail to be bewitched by the collection of Sandro Botticelli’s works, a unique collection that has no rivals anywhere else – just think of the Allegory of Spring or the world-famous Birth of Venus. But of course you should not miss the works by Giotto, Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael, geniuses of art who need no introduction, or those by Mantegna, Titian, Parmigianino, Rembrandt and Caravaggio (with his scary Medusa). The wonder of the hundreds of wonders that inhabit the Uffizi is the Adoration of the Magi by Gentile da Fabriano, probably one of the most fascinating and interesting paintings ever.

Iscritto dallÚNESCO nel Patrimonio dellÚmanità, il territorio di Montalcino è ospitato da unúnica grande collina in gran parte boschiva. Pensate, solo il 15% del terreno è coltivato a vite. E questa ridotta porzione di terra, ricca in modo diversificato secondo láltitudine dei vigneti di indispensabili sostanze organiche, accompagnata da un particolare clima mediterraneo, rendono il Brunello di Montalcino un vino di gran pregio e simbolo delléccellenza italiana nel mondo. È un vino capace di invecchiare anche per trenta o quarant’anni, se ben conservato. E si abbina deliziosamente a piatti strutturati o formaggi stagionati. Ma è anche un compagno ideale per la meditazione. In enoteca, accanto al classico Brunello di Montalcino, si può trovare la Riserva. La Riserva si distingue per láffinamento in bottiglia di almeno sei mesi, contro i quattro dellÁnnata, e per límmissione in commercio che avviene dopo sei anni dalla vendemmia invece dei cinque. Láffinamento del Sangiovese, la sola uva prevista dal disciplinare per realizzare il Brunello,

deve invece realizzarsi per almeno due anni in botti di rovere per entrambi gli appellativi. Esiste una relazione della commissione ampelografica della provincia di Siena su un Brunello di trentadue anni (vendemmia 1843) in cui si dice che il vino presenta caratteristiche analitiche immutate nel tempo cioè si era conservato perfettamente. E’ tuttavia negli anni dell’Unità d’Italia (fra il 1865 e il 1869) che i tentativi di vinificare l’uva di Brunello in purezza e maturare il vino in botte si intensificano e giungono a ottimi risultati. Il padre precursore del Brunello di Montalcino fu certamente Clemente Santi. Nel 1869 un suo Vino Scelto (Brunello), della vendemmia 1865, fu premiato con medaglia d’argento dal Comizio Agrario di Mon-

tepulciano. Negli anni successivi il Brunello ottiene altri importanti riconoscimenti internazionali battendo i rossi francesi persino a Parigi e a Bordeaux. Per molti anni il Brunello rimase una rarità destinata a pochi raffinati intenditori. E’ solo nella seconda metà del Novecento che, da una prelibatezza per pochi, si trasforma in un simbolo mondiale del migliore made in Italy. Moltissimi riconoscimenti comprovano la qualità del vino: nel 1999 la prestigiosa rivista statunitense “Wine Specator” inserisce un Brunello fra i dodici migliori vini del XX° secolo e nel 2006 incorona un Brunello in cima alla classifica mondiale. DISCOVERING BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

Included by UNESCO in its World Heritage Sites, the area of Montalcino consists of one largely-woody, big hill. Just think, only 15% of this area is grown with vines. And this compact piece of land, differently enriched depending on the altitude of the vineyards with essential organic substances, favoured by a unique Mediterranean climate, makes Brunello di Montalcino an extremely valuable wine and the symbol of Italian excellence in the world. It is a wine that can age for even 30 or 40 years, if stored in the right condition. And it is delicious when matched with full-bodied dishes or aged cheese. But it is also an ideal companion as a vino da meditazione, a wine to be savoured on its own. In the winery, along with classic Brunello di Montalcino, you can find the Riserva. What makes the Riserva different is that it is aged in bottles for at least 6 months as opposed to 4 months for the Annata and it is sold 6 years after the harvest instead of 5. On the contrary, Sangiovese, the only grapes that meet the specifications for making Brunello, must be aged for at least two years in oak casks, for both Riserva and Annata. There is a Report of the Ampelographic Committee of the Province of Siena about a 32-year-old Brunello – harvested in 1843 – which says that the wine had not changed at all, meaning that it had perfectly kept. However it was in the years of the Unification of Italy – 1865 to 1869 – that attempts at making wine from Brunello grapes only and ageing the wine in casks became more intense and began to achieve excellent results. The pioneer of Brunello di Montalcino was definitely Clemente Santi. In 1869, one of his Choice Wines (Brunello), a vintage 1865, was awarded a silver medal by Comizio Agrario di Montepulciano, the local farmers’ committee. Later on, Brunello earned other major international awards, defeating French red wines even in Paris and Bordeaux. For many years, Brunello had been just a rare wine for few, selected connoisseurs. It was not until the late twentieth century that, from being a delicacy for the few, it turned into a worldwide symbol of the best Italian-made products. Lots of awards prove how good this wine is: in 1999, the prestigious US “Wine Spectator” included one Brunello among the 12 best wines of the 20th century and in 2006 it crowned a Brunello as top of the world wine list. Every year, during the “Benvenuto Brunello” event, Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino gives an official overall rating to the quality of the last harvested Brunello di Montalcino. Such rating is based on a thorough review of the harvested product and the condition in which the grapes have ripened; in addition, such rating is essential to rate the quality of the end product, once the ageing process is over. This is a summery of the ratings awarded by Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino to the vintages from 1945 to date, on a 1 to 5 star scale; obviously, a five-star rating stands for an exceptional vintage, with the highest potentials. Vintages in brackets are those that are still aging in wooden casks or in bottles. Five-star vintages have been highlighted in the previous page.

La mitilicoltura alla Spezia ha più di cento anni, ma non li dimostra. Forse in effetti ne ha parecchi di più perché questi gustosi molluschi, nelle varie specie con le quali sono presenti nel golfo di La Spezia, sono da secoli prodotti, apprezzati e ricercati per le tavole di ricchi e poveri. A parte ricordi romani e preromani di cui sono testimonianza la raffigurazione di “frutti di mare” in mosaici e bassorilievi presenti nei reperti archeologici rinvenuti durante gli scavi di Luni, un documento dell’imperatore Ottone imponeva alle comunità di Ameglia e Vezzano, alla foce del Magra (nei pressi di La Spezia) in occasione delle sue presenze nella zona, di fornire uno “scudo” colmo di datteri di mare. Venendo ad epoche più recenti, è noto che la mitilicoltura era già praticata agli inizi del diciannovesimo secolo, ed il commercio favorito dall’apertura delle strade napoleoniche per Lerici e Portovenere, era già fiorente. I mitili eduli da alimento popolare di pescatori, divenne cibo apprezzatissimo delle colonie inglesi stabilitesi nell’800 sul Golfo e delle quali furono notissimi rappresentanti i poeti Byron e Shelley. Tutt’oggi i mitili nel Golfo della Spezia rappresentano un’importante attrazione turistica considerata l’innumerevole varietà di vivande che con questi si possono preparare, dagli antipasti ai primi e secondi piatti, ai quali si accompagna naturalmente il vino bianco secco delle nostre Cinque Terre. Chi si accinge con la propria barca ad addentrarsi nella rada di Portovenere e nel Golfo di La Spezia, potrà notare le ampie aree marine dedicate alla miticoltura. Si può ammirare il panorama o godersi una formidabile scorpacciata nei ristoranti che si affacciano sul porto di Portovenere, dove specialmente la sera il viavai di stranieri dal palato esigente è di tutto rispetto. re sono ricordati da autori celebri come Miguel de Cervantes, Eugenio Montale e Gabriele d’Annunzio. Il paesaggio è caratterizzato dai terrazzamenti dei vitigni, creati dall’uomo con fatica; gli alberi da fico sono spesso posti strategicamente per fare ombra e le agavi servono a rimarcare i confini nonché lo sbocco per le stradine sulle ripide scale di pietra. Gli aspri colli delle Cinque Terre ospitano piccoli vigneti su terrazzamenti strappati alla terra dalla mano dell’uomo. I vini qui prodotti sono due vini bianchi, uno secco e uno dolce, entrambi da uve Bosco al 60%, Vermentino e Albarola. Il Cinque Terre DOC è un bianco secco di color giallo paglierino scarico con qualche riflesso verdolino; al naso è piuttosto delicato ma persistente, con sentori di erbe di campo e cedro; gustandolo si scopre un vino secco, fresco, leggero e

continuo. Si abbina benissimo sia alla zuppa di cozze o alle cozze alla marinara, sia ad altri piatti tipici ed ingredienti della tradizione locale come le verdure, le patate, le acciughe, le seppie in zimino ed i formaggi saporiti. Tre sono le sottozone più vocate per la produzione del vino Cnque Terre DOC. A seconda della località di produzione, si otterranno il Cinque terre “Costa de Campu” DOC, proveniente dalla località Campu a Manarola, il Cinque terre “Costa de Posa” DOC, coltivato nella località Posa a Volastra e il Cinque terre “Costa di Sera” DOC a Riomaggiore. Il dolce Sciacchetrà, un vino bianco passito, rappresenta il fiore all’occhiello della produzione di questo distretto. Nasce dalle stesse uve del bianco secco (Bosco 60%, Vermentino ed Albarola 40%), lasciate per lungo tempo ad appassire sui graticci. L’ap-

passimento avviene al riparo dalla luce solare diretta. L’ombra garantisce infatti la giusta concentrazione degli zuccheri senza che l’equilibrio del vino possa subire alterazioni. Il vino viene prodotto in tutti e cinque i borghi delle cinque terre. Di colore oro antico con decisi riflessi ambrati, limpido e di buona scorrevolezza, al naso è molto intenso e persistente, ampio con eleganti sentori di albicocca, miele di acacia e sfumature di frutta secca. In bocca si scopre un vino dolce, deciso, mai stucchevole, mitigato da una lieve sapidità che ne accentua l’ armonia e l’ equilibrio. Se lo si degusta giovane, è bene accompagnarlo a formaggi piccanti oppure a dolci, ma che siano di buona consistenza come la pasticceria secca oppure il classico pandolce. Dopo un adeguato affinamento, invece, è perfetto come vino da meditazione.

SURF AND TURF FARMS Mussel farming at La Spezia is over one hundred years old but it does not look it. Maybe it is actually even older than that, because these tasty molluscs, the different species that live in the Gulf of La Spezia, have been farmed, loved and sought after for centuries by rich and poor alike. Apart from the Roman and pre-Roman memories evoked by the “seafood” portrayed on mosaics and bas reliefs in the archaeological remains from Luni, one of Emperor Otto’s document imposed to the villages of Ameglia and Vezzano, at the mouth of the river Magra (near La Spezia), to provide a “shieldful” of date mussels when he was around. In more recent ages, it is know that mussel farming had already been practiced in the early nineteenth century, and the trade, boosted by the opening of the Napoleonic roads to Lerici and Portovenere, was already thriving. From being a frugal food for fishermen, the edible mussels turned into an extremely popular food for the English colonies that settled in the Gulf in the 19th century, the best known ones being the poets Byron and Shelley. In the Gulf of La Spezia, mussels are still an important tourist attraction as they may be used to make a multitude of dishes, from starters to pasta dishes and main courses, which are of course perfectly matched with the dry white wine of our Cinque Terre. Those of you who are getting ready to sail into the roadstead of Portovenere and the Gulf of La Spezia may notice the large sea areas where mussels are farmed. You can enjoy the view or gorge yourself on mussels in one of the restaurants scattered along the port of Portovenere, where, especially at night, there is quite a bustle of foreigners with demanding tastes. This “surf-farmed” product is a perfect match for the “turf-farmed” ones. The wines of Cinque Terre have been celebrated by such famous authors as Miguel de Cervantes, Eugenio Montale and Gabriele d’Annunzio. The landscape is dotted with terraced vineyards laboriously made by man; fig trees are often strategically planted to shade the vines, while agaves are used to mark the boundaries or the entrance to

some lane on the steep stone steps. The harsh hills of Cinque Terre are home to small terraced vineyards that man’s hands have wrenched off the land. Two white wines are made here, a dry wine and a sweet wine, both from 60% Bosco grapes, Vermentino and Albarola grapes. Cinque Terre DOC (Controlled Designation of Origin) is a dry white wine, pale yellow in colour with some greenish reflections; its aroma is fairly mild but lingering, with tones of herbs and cedar; when you taste it, you find it is dry, fresh, light and lingering. It is a perfect match for mussel soup or mussels marinara, as well as for other typical dishes and local traditional ingredients, such as vegetables, potatoes, anchovies, cuttlefish with greens, or savoury cheese. There are three areas that are best for making Cnque Terre DOC wine. Depending on the place the grapes have been grown, the wine may be called Cinque Terre “Costa de Campu” DOC from the area of Campu at Manarola, Cinque terre “Costa de Posa” DOC from Posa at Volastra, and Cinque Terre “Costa di Sera” DOC from Riomaggiore. The sweet Sciacchetrà, a white straw wine, is the region’s feather in the cap. It is made with the same grapes as the dry wine (Bosco 60%, Vermentino and Albarola 40%), left to dry on rush mats for a long time. The grapes are sheltered from direct sunlight as they dry. Shading actually gives the wine the right sugar content, without altering its balance. Wine is produced by all five villages. Coloured like old gold with sharp amber reflections, crisp and smooth, its aroma is very intense, lingering, far ranging, with smart notes of apricot, acacia honey and nutty nuances. When you taste it, you find it is sweet, crisp, never sickly-sweet, balanced by a slightly savoury note that enhances its harmony and body. If drunk new, it should be matched with spicy cheese or even with desserts, provided they are fairly stodgy, such as teacakes or classic Christmas cake. Once properly aged, it is instead perfect as a vino da meditazione, a wine to be savoured on its own.

Bagno Vignoni è un antichissimo borgo situato nella Val d’Orcia, tra le verdi colline toscane. Questo luogo deve la sua fama alla sorgente termale che è parte integrante della città. La particolarità di Bagno Vignoni è che l’acqua sgorgante dalla sua principale fonte termale, viene raccolta nella piazza del paese. Il borgo, quindi, non ha una vera e propria piazza, ma una grande vasca nella quale si raccoglie l’acqua della fonte, che si trova ad oltre 1000 metri sotto terra. L’acqua sgorga dalla terra a 52° centigradi e viene raccolta nella piazza di Bagno Vignoni. Il grande bacino che raccoglie acqua fumante, è chiuso per tre lati da una cinta muraria, attorno alla quale sono sorte le abitazioni del borgo. L’acqua che della piazza viene incanalata in viottoli che percorrono l’intera città. Fiumiciattoli di acqua fumante disegnano sinuosi sentieri nei quali è possibile immergere mani e piedi per provare sulla propria pelle l’inebriante giovamento dell’acqua termale. Nonostante la zona dei ruscelletti sia molto frequentata, si riesce sempre a trovare un posto dove sedersi e immergere i piedi nell’acqua. I ruscelletti concludono la loro strada sulla rupe su cui è poggiata Bagno Vignoni, cascando verso la parte bassa della città e finendo in un’altra vasca, all’interno della quale è possibile fare il bagno. In passato, questo naturale dislivello della zona, veniva sfruttato per attivare i mulini presenti nella zona. L’antica storia delle terme di Bagno Vignoni è testimoniata dai suoi illustri ospiti del passato. Lorenzo de Medici, detto “Il Magnifico” fu uno dei più grandi personaggi dell’importante storia della nobile famiglia de’ Medici. La sua grande cultura umanistica e la sua abilità politica, manifestatasi già da giovanissimo, gli permisero di governare Firenze accrescendo sempre più il prestigio e la forza della sua città. Era solito ritirarsi alle terme di Bagno Vignoni per curarsi e studiare, abbracciato dalle verdi colline che tanto amava. Ancora oggi, quando la sera cala sulla vasca fumante della piazza di Bagno Vignoni, sembra quasi di veder passeggiare il giovane Lorenzo, intento a seguire i suoi pensieri lungo i percorsi scavati nella terra dai rivoli di acqua termale. Un’altra illustre personalità del passato amava ritirarsi alle terme di Bagno Vignoni. Si tratta di Santa Caterina da Siena che, molto spesso, si recava in questi posti per raccogliersi in preghiera solitaria. Il loggiato costruito sulla vasca fu dedicato proprio a lei, come testimonianza del legame della Santa con questo luogo. Molti personaggi del passato hanno utilizzato le terme di Bagno Vignoni per trarre beneficio sia dalle proprietà curative delle sue acque, che dalla tranquillità del luogo. Gli antichi mulini alimentati dalle acque termali sono stati restaurati ed ora è possibile visitarli per scoprirne il funzionamento e l’importanza che hanno avuto per tutta la Val d’’Orcia. Essendo circondata dal verde, l’intera area di Bagno Vignoni gode di un panorama bellissimo e rilassante.

BAGNO VIGNONI the village with the water square

Bagno Vignoni is an extremely old village in Val d’Orcia, surrounded by the green Tuscan hills. This place is known for the thermal spring that is an integral part of the village. The peculiarity about Bagno Vignoni is that the water gushing out of its main thermal spring is collected in the village square. So, the village does not have a real square but a sort of large tank which collects water from the spring, located over 1000 metres underground. The water flows out of the ground at 52° degrees centigrade and is collected in the square of Bagno Vignoni. The big tank that collects the steaming-hot water is enclosed on three sides by a circle of walls, which the village houses have been built around. The water from the square is channelled into lanes running all through the village. Rivulets of steaming-hot water outline winding paths, where you can plunge your hand or feet to feel the intoxicating benefits of thermal water on your skin. Even if the area around the streams is usually crowded, you can always find a place to sit and plunge your feet into the water. The streams end their course on the crag on which Bagno Vignoni stands, where they drop down to the lower part of the village and into another tank where you can take a bath. In the past, this natural gradient was used to operate the local mills. The ancient history of the spa of Bagno Vignoni has been documented by illustrious guests of ancient times. Lorenzo de Medici, known as “Il Magnifico”, was one of the greatest men in the history of the noble Medici family. His great humanistic culture and political skills, which he began to show at a very young age, drove him to rule Florence, increasing his city’s prestige and strength ever more. He used to go to the spa in Bagno Vignoni to study and take care of his health, in the embrace of the green hills he loved so much. Even now, when the evening drops on the steaming-hot tank in the square of Bagno Vignoni, it feels as if young Lorenzo were strolling around, engrossed in his thoughts, along the lanes dug into the ground by the rivulets of thermal water. There is another famous person who loved to go to the spa in Bagno Vignoni. It is St Catherine of Siena, who very often went to these places to collect her thoughts in solitary prayer. The open gallery built over the tank was dedicated to her, as proof of the Saint’s special bond with this place. In the past, lots of people used the spa of Bagno Vignoni to benefit from the therapeutic properties of its waters as well as from the peacefulness of the place. The ancient mills operated by thermal water have been restored and can now be visited to learn more about how they worked and the important role they played for the whole Orcia valley. As it is surrounded by vegetation, the entire area of Bagno Vignoni offers beautiful relaxing views.

COME NON LO AVETE MAI VISTO Il nuovo allestimento della Sala 35 della Galleria degli Uffizi, detta sala di Michelangelo (corridoio di ponente, ingresso da via della Ninna 5) è stato recentemente presentato da Cristina Acidini, soprintendente per il Patrimonio storico, artistico ed etnoantropologico e per il polo museale della città di Firenze, e da Antonio Natali, direttore della galleria degli Uffizi. Una delle Sale più importanti del museo fiorentino in cui campeggia il famosissimo Tondo Doni, che raffigura la Sacra famiglia con San Giovannino, ma anche la statua romana dell’Arianna addormentata, tornata in Galleria dopo un lungo restauro. Quadri e opere da leggere come un brano di poesia: da questo punto parte Natali per spiegare la nuova disposizione e aggiunge: “La maggior parte

dei visitatori prima si affollavano davanti alla “Sacra famiglia” di Michelangelo e dovevano arrabattarsi per vederne brani sparsi, incuneando lo sguardo in una selva di teste. Ai suoi lati campeggiano soltanto due tavole: quelle dipinte per la camera Borgherini da Francesco Granacci, che del Buonarroti fu appunto amico”.

Michelangelo, as you have never seen it before The new layout of Hall 35 of Galleria degli Uffizi, also known as Michelangelo’s hall (western corridor, entrance from Via della Ninna 5), has been recently presented by Cristina Acidini, director

of Florence’s fine arts service and museum centre, and by Antonio Natali, director of Galleria degli Uffizi. One of the most important halls in the Florentine museum, overlooked by the widely celebrated Tondo Doni, which portrays the Holy Family with the Infant St John the Baptist, as well as the Roman statue of the Sleeping Ariadne, which has come back to the gallery after extensive restoration. Paintings and works to be construed as poems: this is the approach taken by Natali to explain the new layout and then he adds: “So far, most visitors crowded in front of Michelangelo’s “Holy Family” and had to struggle to see some scattered pieces of it, wedging in to look through a forest of heads. In the new hall – which is also red – director Natali explains – the “Tondo Doni” is at the centre of the long wall in front of the entrance. Only two paintings stand out at its sides: the ones painted for Borgherini’s bedroom by Francesco Granacci, who was one of Buonarroti‘s friends”.

La Porta del Ghiberti torna visibile dopo 27 anni di restauri nell’Opificio delle Pietre Dure. La storia delle Porte del Battistero di Firenze e in particolare della seconda Porta di Lorenzo Ghiberti - la Porta d’Oro, la Porta del Paradiso - è una splendida avventura, un grande progetto di fede che riuscì a coniugare cultura umanistica e sensibilità artistica, ma anche maestria tecnica, capacità organizzativa e gestione della ricchezza mercantile. A quattro secoli e passa di distanza, un’altra storia - quella del restauro - si è svolta in un arco di tempo paragonabile a quello della creazione: perché se al Ghiberti occorsero per creare la Porta i ventisette anni dal 1425 al 1452, per l’intervento conservativo contemporaneo ce ne sono voluti altri ventisette, entro l’arco di tempo dal 1979 al 2012. Protagonista di questa storia recente, quell’eccellenza fiorentina del restauro che è l’Opificio delle Pietre Dure, un tempo manifattura artistica medicea e dei lorena, oggi Istituto del Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali dedito alla conservazione, alla ricerca scientifica e alla formazione dei restauratori

LOUIS VUITTON SBARCA A FORTE DEI MARMI Louis Vuitton sbarca a Forte dei Marmi con una nuova boutique in centro. L’arrivo di Louis Vuitton (che di recente, e per il settimo anno consecutivo, è stato indicato come il marchio di lusso più prezioso del mondo dal Millward Brown Optimor’s 2012) è una bella conferma di Forte dei Marmi, che si riconferma ancora una volta come una piazza importante nel panorama del Bel Paese. L’opening dovrebbe essere previsto entro Pasqua.

È un’incisione sottile e profonda nella collina. Dentro la terra. E’ nato a Bargino, nel Comune di San Casciano Val di Pesa, mezz’ora d’auto dal cuore rinascimentale di Firenze, il nuovo quartier generale Marchesi Antinori, la nuova Cantina nel Chianti Classico – visitabile da febbraio 2013. All’interno oltre la cantina, il museo, che presenta una parte della collezione storica di Palazzo Antinori a Firenze unita a interventi site-specific di artisti internazionali del panorama contemporaneo. Heaven’s door Ghiberti’s door makes a comeback after 27 years’ restorations in Opificio delle Pietre Dure. The history of the Doors of the Baptistery of Florence, especially the second Door, by Lorenzo Ghiberti – the Golden Gate, the Gate of Paradise –, is a wonderful adventure, a great design of faith that succesfully combine humanistic culture with artistic sensitivity, as well as technical skills, organisational skills and the management of commercial fortunes.Over four centuries later, a different story – that of the restoration – took place in a span of time that is comparable to the time taken to make the work itself: because, while Ghiberti took twenty-seven years, from 1425 to 1452, to make the Door, the contemporary renovation project has taken another twenty-seven, from 1979 to 2012. The hero of this recent story is that excellent Florence-based restoration institute that is Opificio delle Pietre Dure, once the artistic manufacture of the Medici and Lorraine families, now an Institute of the Ministry of the Cultural Heritage, specialising in conservation, scientific research and restores’ training.

LOUIS VUITTON lands in Forte dei Marmi Louis Vuitton lands in Forte dei Marmi with a new boutique in the town centre. The arrival of Louis Vuitton (which recently, and for the seventh year on end, has been listed as the world’s most valuable luxury brand by the Millward Brown Optimor’s 2012) is a great acknowledgement for Forte dei Marmi, which proves once again to be one of the most important places in Italy. The store should open before Easter.

It is a thin, deep cut into the hill. Into the soil. Bargino, near San Casciano Val di Pesa, half an hour’s drive from Florence’s Renaissance heart, is home to the new headquarters of Marchesi Antinori, the new Chianti Classico winery – open to visitors as from February 2013. As well as the winery, the place hosts a museum, which showcases part of the heritage collection from Palazzo Antinori in Florence, as well as site-specific works by international contemporary artists. In addition, an auditorium all clad in oak wood, an ideal place for conferences, workshops, conventions, a bookshop, a shop selling traditional foods, and a restaurant serving Tuscan wines and dishes. Un viaggio che riallaccia passato e presente. Questo il museo della Marineria di Viareggio - situato nello storico edificio dell’ex mercato ittico. Sono presenti, nel “luogo della memoria”, cimeli legati alla storia dei cantieri, della gente di mare, delle maestranze sugli scali, dello splendore e del tramonto dell’epoca velica e infine dei motovelieri. Il logo del Museo della Marineria di Viareggio non a caso riproduce uno dei mascheroni in ferro con anello d’ormeggio, situato - a breve distanza dalla Torre Matilde - su una fiancata del porto-canale della Città, sulla cui riva sinistra si trova l’antico mercato del pesce, oggi restaurato per ospitare le collezioni del Museo. Dai cantieri viareggini uscivano tartane e bovi fino ai brigantini e ai brigantini-goletta (“barcobestia”), oggi documentati da una raccolta di modelli che testimoniano l’evoluzione della costruzione navale e la perizia dei maestri d’ascia. Una collezione di strumenti - dai primi sestanti alle bussole, dai quadranti di riduzione ai grafometri alle carte nautiche - illustra l’evoluzione della strumentazione nautica.

The local Navy A journey, tying past and present back together. This is the Navy Museum of Viareggio – set up in the historical building of the former fish market. This “place of memory” exhibits mementoes associated with the history of the shipyards, the seafaring people, the labour on the landing places, the glory and decline of the sailing age and, finally, the sailing ships. It is not by chance that the logo of the Navy Museum of Viareggio portrays one of the iron gargoyles with a mooring ring that can be found – not far from Torre Matilde – on one side of the town’s canal harbour, on the left bank of which stands the ancient fish market, now converted into the Navy Museum. The local shipyards used to build all sorts of boats, from tartans and bovi (small lateen-rigged vessels) to brigs and barcobestie (brigantines), now documented by a collection of models that showcase the history of the shipbuilding trade and the shipwrights’ skills. A collection of implements – from the first few sextants to compasses, from quadrants to graphometers to charts – showcases the history of navigational instruments.

L’ottava edizione del Teatro del Silenzio si svolgerà il 13 luglio 2013 a Lajatico (Pisa), paese natale di Andrea Bocelli, il celeberrimo tenore che è, da sempre, nume tutelare e protagonista assoluto della manifestazione. La definizione del calendario della performance, con l’anticipo che fisiologicamente chiede un simile spettacolo di respiro (e utenza) internazionale, rappresenta un passo importante per l’intera macchina organizzativa e per il territorio. Se i dettagli dello spettacolo, in fase di rifinitura, devono essere ancora rivelati, la notizia cruciale e “certa” è che anche nel 2013 Andrea Bocelli tornerà sul palcoscenico naturale del “suo” Teatro del Silenzio, in quella conca spettacolare sotto il loggione del cielo che per 364 giorni l’anno è restituita al paesaggio naturale e al suono degli uccelli e dei trattori, alla pace d’una terra verde e grigia, dove trionfa l’odore del fieno ed in primavera è invasa dal trifoglio e dalle primule bianche (www.teatrodelsilenzio.it)

Sempre per Ferrari Del Chiaro ha realizzato anche un prezioso Cavallino Rampante in versione trofeo rivestito in foglia d’oro zecchino 24K (che nel 2003 la scuderia Ferrari ha donato a Michael Schumacher), quattro diverse riproduzioni – sempre rivestite in foglia d’oro – di trofei sportivi storici ed una serie numerata di cento modelli stilizzati in bronzo patinato della Ferrari 275 GTB nel 40° anniversario della messa in produzione. Da considerare che Ferrari non concede mai a terzi la facoltà di riprodurre il proprio simbolo. Il caso di Del Chiaro è pertanto uno dei rarissimi al mondo.

include some gigantic high reliefs of its Cavallino Rampante or prancing horse (three metres high), in polished aluminium or bronze in a variety of patinas, some for the Ferrari Museum, the ALCOA plant in Modena, the Ferrari Training Centre and a leading Belgian car dealer. Also for Ferrari, Del Chiaro made a precious Cavallino Rampante shaped like a trophy and coated in 24K pure gold leaf (which in 2003 the Ferrari stable gave to Michael Schumacher as a present), four different copies – also coated in gold leaf – of heritage sports trophies, and a limited edition of one hundred stylised models of the Ferrari 275 GTB in tarnished bronze on the 40th anniversary of its first production.
