Designing a building and producing a high quality architecture is a process which consists of a large part of analysis and research. How does the building have to function? How does it respond to the environment? Where is it built? And what the building should demonstrate, express and experience as an architectural image but also as “a vessel for life; a receptacle that shelters and allows one to experience the realities of a life-time” ?, like Aris Konstantinidis, a notable architect of modernism in Greece, used to say. The United Nations Environmental Council (UNEC) will be the sixth UN Council and will deal with all the global issues concerning sustainability, searching at the same time all the political, economical and technological information that can be connected with sustainabili

The site in the city

ty development. The idea starts from the city, the site and the different fuctions required for that kind of a building. It represents a small “city in the city”. The main material, concrete, is rough and dominating, but the different textures created from the framework, motivate the visitors to touch it and explore it. The light touches the material and enhances the texture of the concrete. The circulation axes, made out of steel and wood, are detached from the concrete volumes and are hanging from the roof, leaving the concrete structure to transfer all the forces on the ground.

Metaxourgeio is an area in Athens with great diversity. This diversity is observed both at the kind of buildings and the people living there. All the architectural styles have left their sign, from neoclassicism to modernism and contemporary architecture. The residence of the area consists of people owning apartments there, immigrants but also people of cultural interests who are renting places to live but also work and are trying to redefine the image of this area. The special characteristic of this place is the amount of pedestrian sidewalks, which represent the human scale of this very dense built environment. The two blocks of collective residence have a different use at the ground floor, more public, trying to connect and expand the system of the pedestrian roads found in this area. The goal of this design was to combine good living quality for the inhabitants and low cost of construction at the same time. The most important designing formula that affected all the stages of this study, was based on the definition of housing, as a combination of personal and social importance and necessity.

The building is situated at a settlement of the mainland Greece, called Afentika. It was built around the 1930 and is representative of vernacular architecture. In vernacular architecture we can meet the complete balance between human being and nature. It is designed by local people that don’t have an engineering education but they do have the experience and the knowledge in techniques which is being transfered from generation to generation. The materials used in vernacular architecture maintain their primary texture or are minimally processed. Therefore, there is no energy consuption for their production and their processing. Although vernacular dwellings are not luxurious, the harmonization of the materials and the construction according to the climate, the orientation, and the nature is remarkable. Decorative elements are only used either as a combination of constructing and functional decoration for ventilation and lighting or are associated with primitive notions and prejudice.

The building of the Greek archive in Athens is a landmark, situated at the heart of the city, where culture meets entertainment. It is a public building with multiple functions. The volume of the building is formed in that way so as to be totally integrated to the existing urban situation All the four sides of the plot are treated differently giving different qualities of space to the visitor. A long concrete faรงade creates a strict boundary to the high traffic road and isolates the square developed at the center of the site. The continuous line of the roof that seems to connect all multiple functions gradually concludes to an open auditorium used for film screening. The strong closed part of the building remains only at the side of the road, whereas from the other long side, where there is a character of a neighborhood, the building stands moderate and the open space dominates. The whole site is like a square where people can stand, cross it or square where people can stand, cross it or enter the building. The entrance from the east side enhances the connection with the Technopolis and the archeological space. The materialization of the building reveals the different functions, where the concrete long volume contains mostly auditoriums and archives and the glass part consists of the reception, the cafeteria and the museum. The roof made by light materials contradicts to the concrete and seems to come additional to cover the volumes.

005 INNOVATIVE BIOCLIMATIC EUROPEAN SCHOOL COMPLEX IN CRETE, GREECE International Architectural Competition

delivered in October 2012

In collaboration with

Panagiotis Papanastasis Eirini Fridaki Fani Ntintoka

The goal of this design is to assist in the development of intraeuropean and environmental awareness towards the new generation using the power of Visual Communication. It explores the idea that a visual message accompanying a text or an object, has a greater power to inform, educate, or persuade a person or audience. The start is done by the Masterplan itself . The volumes follow the flow of the landscape and try to convey the relation of mental and physical evolvement to the educational levels’ progression. The student becomes an adult ready to start his path in life, as an academic and as an adult.

All this happens olny under proper guidance; the importance of the administration building as a symbol. The school of a multinational european the message it should convey is being equal is aknowledging the right to be different. The facade cannot be but the most appropriate messenger: One material covering the entire compex differentialtated, however, by different textured interpretations (in-situ stamped or carved patterns) of it. Nature is the experiential element though which knowledge and respect for the environment are strengthened.

All the trees are preserved. All the paths are connected. The terraces, roofs and voids allow observation of and contact with nature everywhere in the complex. The climate in Crete is the ideal to encourage outdoor activities and our guiding rule is to make use of this opportunity as much as possible.

This house aims to dismantle the box with a variation of recesses and protrusions. Due to high quality of the construction, the volumes that compose the building appear elegant and sharp. In turn, forming different qualities of outdoor and semi- outdoor spaces. The special emphasis during the design was put on the impact of daylight on the volumes and interior spaces. As this is the most significant factor defining good living conditions. It is a six floors complex of appartments of 400 m2 in total. On the ground floor there is a gallery, which could also be used by public with a separate entrance.

It is a large scale building of 13.000m2 including a variety of facilities: offices, meeting rooms and storage spaces. The interior spaces where designed according to strict regulations. The designed accessible green roof and the landscape creates a coherant unity with the context, additionally providing pleasant working environment for the employees.

008 HOUSE IN AGRINIO Personal proposal In collaboration with

Zamparas Nikos (Civil Engineering)

It is a family house, consisting of two individual apartments. The site is situated at Agrinio, a small city at the west part of mainland Greece. The treatment of the volumes and the void lead us to the relation of the built and the open space. Almost all the terraces created from the volumes can be used from the inhabitants. The climate in Greece enhance the idea of the open space being equal to the closed one. The inhabitants can enjoy the view of the city and the nature around them. Section -facade
