Commercial Heifers

It’s with tremendous pride and a hint of sorrow that I write this. There’s a moment in everyone’s life that they realize the value of time. This spring, short on help, short on sleep and short on energy, a decision was made. It was easy for me; it was hard for the rest of the family to hear. Changes needed to be made. Aging parents, young family and cold reality that things can change in your life too quickly, I decided that the White herd had to be liquidated. At times it’s hard to admit you’re not the same person you once were, however, this was a moment I was proud to be a family man. Our Charolais herd is rather young, compared to the industry leaders. It was started in the fall of 2006 with the purchase of the High Selling Bred Heifer at the famed EXL dispersal. It was never planned to be large, just a small group that could complement our Red Angus program. Cows were added from the Kay Mac, SanDan, Angle H, Tee M Jay and Wood River reduction/ dispersals. Females were added privately from Murphy Livestock, High Bluff, Wood River and Sparrow’s. We wanted a Charolais cow that could run with our Red Angus cows. That proved to be a daunting task; at one point we culled over 60 cows, leaving us with 1 white cow left. We pared the rot down to the bone and started again. We were not sacrificing fertility, soundness, type or performance to wholesale white bulls. Those white cows weren’t the type we wanted our brand on. Slowly, we built back. And we built back better. Today, this is the group we anticipated and strived for. The bull market has always been good to us. The white bull market especially. Back in the 1980’s & 1990’s, our customers had big, heavy white cows. They loved those “farmer” cattle. They took feed and management but they always provided performance and pay weight. Our Red bulls bred their heifers. In 1985, Glenn decided to buy their tan heifers, breed them red again and sell them in a commercial heifer sale. It was a huge success. For 13 years, it was the pace car for bred heifers in Eastern Saskatchewan. And those big tan heifers lead the charge. But, as the “farmer” cattle dwindled, so did the demand for Charolais bulls. By the mid 2000’s, the same customers had made their herds red, citing larger herd size and high production costs as the reason. They needed “ranch” bulls. That was the start of our 2-year-old bull program. We tailored it to big herds and tough country. The genetics and culling criteria had to line up with that. From the Bench to the Block, from the Interlake to the Parkland, our white bulls are flourishing. As a fledgling Charolais breeder, there was plenty to learn. Some of the lessons were hard and expensive, others were easy and expensive! But one thing that we found was an awesome sense of community. The Charolais fraternity welcomed us with open arms. So many kind and genuine people, I certainly wouldn’t be wrong in generalizing that we never met a bad one. Some dipshits, but they may think the same of me. Great folks like the Beck’s: Gary, Donna, Wade, Mark, Jill and their families; Sparrow’s: Cam, Kerrie and girls; Weinbender’s: Carey, Leeane, Laura, Sarah, Dale and their families; Wilgenbusch’s: Craig & Trish, Colin and Conrad and families; Orland Walker; Darwin Rosso; T Bar crew, past and present; Helge and Candace By; Craig Scott and Lois Chivalo. A couple very notable and very influential groups of people also need recognized. The Beyak’s at Winn Man Farms; Mike, Kevin, Jeff and their families. Customers and friends, we’ve sold them over 25 Red Angus and hybRED bulls. An absolutely, no bullshit operation; these men gave me guidance and confidence to find Charolais cows that fit my vision. That’s why Lanza and Skaggs are so prevalent in our pedigrees. The Blake’s at Wood River: Murray and Shane; boy these guys raise good cattle. Honest ranch cattle – hardworking, kind people. But DAMN, I hope they get some rain soon. They deserve better than what’s been happening to them. Finally, 3 influential men that taught me about the breed and showed me their passion for it. Unfortunately, these men are all gone but their families still lead by their examples. Ivan Walker, Dale Norheim and John Wilgenbusch. *** As I pen this welcome, the somber and heartbreaking news of Janet Jackson’s passing has hit us all. Bob and Jan were to me, the Charolais equivalent of the great Brian Good. Passionate, kind, friendly and driven to promote the Charolais breed. What a loss*** Folks, it’s been a hell of a ride. But simpler times are needed. I’m going to miss these albinos but we’ve assembled a set and a program that some young breeder can hit the ground running with. I’m here to help you service the needs of our customer base. They want good, responsibly developed, white bulls. This set of cows will deliver that. Darren Ippolito Welcome Moose Creek

When the opportunity to purchase females that have been the cause and effect behind a bull sale as successful as the Moose Creek programs, astute cattlemen sit up and pay attention. The success that the Ippolito family has had taking the terminal qualities that make the Charolais breed so popular and elevating them, alongside making these white females work maternally needs to be commended. Boasting over 50 years in the agriculture industry and providing quality service all throughout, Darren and his family are committed to the agriculture way of life. To run as many cows as they do is no easy feat, and to find people as dedicated and committed to their lifestyle and outlook on the industry would not be easy.

Darren Ippolito is a big picture, glass half full type of person. The Moose Creek herd is young and in their prime. The understanding of quality and longevity means that this herd is advanced solely on the type of cattle this family would be proud to put their tattoo on. Females that don’t fit are culled without second guessing. While it is a dispersal, you can be assured that each female is the cream of the crop.

Darren is proud to give credit to his mentors within the white breed, and cites their guidance as to what shaped his vision of the perfect Charolais cow. This willingness and acceptance of collaboration can be seen throughout the pedigrees of the offering; featuring some of the breed giants and legends. When bulls are selected, whether for AI or to run with the cows, Moose Creek is scrupulous in his selections. Every aspect is researched and thought out, which we see in the matings throughout the book. We see the heavy AI program at play, but the herd bulls used back this up perfectly.

The Moose Creek operation was built around the hard-working, profitable, honest, ranch raised cow. These girls are designed to make you bulls that will top your pen, tailored to big herds and tough country. No matter the country these bulls have been sent to, past customers have come back to say they handle it with ease.

Proving that they live their motto of consistency, quality, service, and integrity; we at T Bar C are proud to endorse this set of Charolais cattle and the Ippolito family. We feel this is a tremendous opportunity for a young producer to advance their operation with, and for the most established of operations to advance their bull and replacement program around. Please contact us with any questions you may have regarding this strong offering of Charolais cattle. Unwavering in their values and determination, we are proud to work with the Ippolito family.
