We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to our 19th Annual Bull and Female sale on March 3, 2019. Our goal is to raise cattle that make our customers larger profits. We will achieve that by offering bulls that are sound, fed for longevity, calving ease and giving you added performance of our Simmental Bulls. By keeping our customer at the center of everything we do, building confidence in our strength and positioning and innovating to create new genetics, we are on track to set ourselves apart from the competition in the beef industry. We are positive about the beef industry, we work everyday to raise a better bull. We are one of the few operations that sell very few females. We believe that you have to retain them in your herd to improve your bull pen. This years’ offering was selected from 500 plus calves, so our culling has been done. We run an extensive AI program. In 2018 we serviced well over 500 females on natural heats. We are excited to show you our offering at anytime, if you can’t make it presale, we welcome you to view the bulls the day before the sale as they are displayed in smaller groups to make your selection easier. The first Sunday in March has become a tradition for the LeBlanc family; pioneers in the breed, dating back to the seventies. R Plus Simmentals have been consistent producers of high standard bulls that have gone on to add value to programs, both commercial and purebred alike. The one hundred bulls offered in 2019 are powerful and exciting; rugged, deep bodied and stout with lots of hair and testicles suitable for all types of breeding programs. Whether you require yearlings, two year olds or both, these red, black and blaze faced bulls will fill the bill! Selected from nearly five hundred calves, these prospects have run on native grass with no creep feed supplement, they are weaned in mid September and developed on a high roughage diet to ensure soundness and fertility. You are getting “All Bull” with “No Bull”! As change occurs in life, so it does in the livestock industry; never in history has that need for top quality bulls with predictable sires become as important as it is now. That, coupled with the powerful and predictable R Plus cow herd will give progeny from your R Plus sires an extra value added component in your steer calves and replacement pasture. When you add the R Plus wintering program and delivery to your gate, marking down Sunday, March 3rd on your calendar is a no-brainer. It’s well worth the trip to Estevan. Bull Development: For 2018, the bulls were
weaned by September 20, coming off native grass pastures with no creep. Bulls are on a chelated mineral, full vaccination and health program. Their development begins with a TMR ration of ground hay, corn based pellets and water. Mid November corn sileage is introduced into the ration and the bulls remain on this total balanced ration until delivery to your ranch. The TMR (total mixed ration) means that every bite the bull takes is the same as the last, ensuring no overloading as other feeding programs may allow. The bulls are not creep fed nor full fed, they are developed.

Edge is a bull we raised and sold in our 2006 sale to Westway and Lewis Farms. He has definitely influenced our program more than any other bull we have ever raised or seen in the breed. He is certainly influencing the Simmental breed through his sons and daughters that are working in several herds. The thing about Edge is he makes his calves better in consistency, kind and type. Throw aways are few and far between.

The breeding of Simmental cattle has been a passion and dream of ours since the 70’s. We made a move in 1991 to change our Simmental cattle into a moderate framed animal that survived well in our climate. The solid colored red and black cattle fit the bill: the performance and fertility of the Simmental cattle could not be compromised, so we began looking for genetics that would support our beliefs. Present day, our beliefs haven’t changed and we believe the cattle back this up.
We are raising cattle that survive and breed in short native grass pastures, with hay being their main ration; cattle that have fertility bred into them, as most of our bulls will be under a year of age at sale time and will have passed a fertility test and scrotal measurement that in the past has averaged around 38 cm. Hair coats are very important to us. Straight heavy haired cattle tend to be easier doing, happier cattle at R Plus. As we live in a short grass area, we have to have cows with large spring of rib. We believe that the rib eye measurement indicates this to us. Structure and conformation have to be closely monitored in our program as a large area of pastures are located in heavy rock conditions. Our cattle must have the ability to walk in these conditions. As our operation is usually a two man show, the cow’s ability to have a calf, that calf’s vigor and the mothering ability of the cow are all things that are very important to us. We do not believe that overfeeding bulls and females is necessary. Longevity is something that is needed in all cattle and overfeeding only helps to shorten their life span and affects their fertility. Our rations are developed to grow and allow cattle to mature at an optimal rate without causing any complications to that animal. We have bred Simmental Cattle for over 4 decades, Solid Red and Black Colored cattle for over 3 decades. The multi generation of the red and black genetics will make your calf crop predictable in color. By using these solid colored genetics we have eliminated sun burnt udders, weak eyed cattle and created a trouble free animal.

r PLU S T WO YEAR OLDS We have been retaining a set of younger born calves to offer up as coming two year olds. This is our 4th offering. They are managed on a higher roughage ration through the winter, then turned out on native pasture until October. They then return to the ranch are placed on a high roughage ration again. As our facilities do not allow us to calve the amount of cows in a shorten season, we purposely extend our calving season. The genetics are the same as our yearling bulls. By doing this we allow the younger age bull calves to mature without having pressure to breed at a year of age. The bulls in our two year old sale are selected for this program as calves. They remain there until sale day.

What is Ultrasound?
Ultrasound has become an everyday use of “frequencies” to detect those things that we can not normally see with our naked eye. Example: (Medical World – it is used for a host of functions from detecting bodily problems to detecting the sex of a young couple’s first new born). In the outside world it is used to detect cracks or possible structural flaws in all types of equipment from bridges to engines. In beef cattle it is used to detect three major components of a live animals carcass composition; that being muscle (meat), fat thickness and IMF (Intra Muscular Fat or Marbling). As well, it is quite commonly used to detect the sex of embryos being carried with an amazingly high degree of accuracy.
The first thing producers want to know about ultrasound is: How accurate is it? The answer to the question depends on who does the actual scanning of the animals and who interprets the images. Ultrasound data on these bulls was collected and analyzed by a technician that is certified by AUP and CUP. This means that the technician has met the standards set by many breed associations. The accuracy, although not perfect, is high enough that bulls selected based on ultrasound result in positive genetic change in progeny carcass traits. Heritability for carcass traits are moderate to high, which is slightly higher than birth weights, weaning weights and yearling weights.
IMF (Inter Muscular Fat or Marbling)
When is it used?
For any meaningful information, it is best done during some relative time period similar to what slaughter ages are to be. The CUP system adjusts the carcass information to one year of age (similar to adjusted yearling weights). This then gives us at least a simple level playing field for making choices or decisions within common groups.
IMF is the best indication that we have to tell us what kind of eating experience we will have when eating beef. Extensive research shows that average AAA and above marbling produces the most satisfied consumers. As marbling increases so does the juiciness, flavorfulness and the tenderness. This may not always be true but for the most part AAA marbling produces more satisfied customers than does A or AA marbling carcasses.
How are the Measurements Expressed?
Back Fat (BF mm)
Rib Fat – either in inches .3 inches or in mm’s 8 mm AREA – usually in square inches IMF or MB – as a % of that area (eg. 4.2 = 4.2%) RP = Retail Product – is a % of a saleable carcass
Why ultrasound or better yet should we pay attention to this information?
Within the seedstock industry it seems like a distant or vague result that holds little real value, but in the commercial cattle world this tool of using ultrasound has become a well documented practice that when used has resulted in a clean, positive, decision making management choice resulting in extra profits of $30 per head and higher. The ultrasound carcass evaluation when used a short time (7 – 10 days) prior to slaughter simply allowed the seller to market on a grid system or not at an optimal time. (This live pre-sort has resulted in an 80% - 95% degree of accuracy following slaughter. The pre-slaughter carcass data corresponded to slaughter data with measuring IMF and Fat to this degree of accuracy). As well reportedly we find major players in the North American slaughter industry securing software programs to in fact use this technology for a much more economic decision on their front. “Apparently the information is not as vague as we may believe.”
What is good or what is bad?
None of the figures or information is bad – the information should help us identify which animals or groups are superior for different traits, ie. the high IMF bulls could be sources to use on Continental cows who may well have lower IMF tendencies, or large AREA bulls or sire groups could be used on low yield, easy fleshing British cows whose IMF genetic makeup could already be abundant. Remember Retail Product (RP) takes a combination of this information into account. So is there a right answer?? Not at all, but there certainly is an advantage to you the buyer using this information if the bulls or sires are identified.
Fat depth influences lean meat yield. Fat bulls have less lean meat/ muscle in the carcass. The fat measurement also gives an indication of the bulls fleshing ability. Calves from a bull with very little fat may finish too slowly in the feedlot. Body condition score (fat depth) in females is related to their ability to reach puberty at an early age, produce milk, rebreed and maintain a short calving interval. On the other hand, bulls carrying excessive fat may suffer reduced fertility.
Adjusted Ribeye Area (AREA in2)
The AREA is the largest muscle in the body at birth so AREA gives an indication of overall carcass muscling (measured in inches) and adjusted to one year of age.
RP (Retail Product/Cutability/% LMY)
RP is the percentage lean meat yield in the carcass. Yield grade is an important factor in both Canada and the US. Producing calves with a high genetic potential for this trait can be an important objective of a breeding program. Back fat will reduce yield by 7 to 8 times what REA will increase yield.
Summary
Like all traits we should avoid the extremes. Moderation is the key. As producers we need to evaluate our own females and then decide what kind of progeny we want to produce and this should dictate what kind of sire we want to purchase.

Terms and Conditions Terms
The terms of the sale are cash or cheque, payable at par at the sale location. The right of property shall not pass until after settlement has been made; no invoicing on buyers in attendance, unless previous arrangements have been made. Every animal sells to the highest bidder and in cases of disputes, the auctioneer’s decision will be final. Current exchange rates will be announced sale day. All monies are in Canadian funds.
Bidding
Each animal will sell to the highest bidder... no by-bidding will be permitted. Disputes - Bidding will be reopened between the parties involved in dispute. If no further bidding is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision on all disputes will be final.
Liabilities
All persons attend the sale at their own risk. The seller, facility owner and sale manager assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents that occur. It is understood that T Bar C Cattle Co. (2013) Ltd. is acting only as a medium between buyer and seller and is not responsible for any failure on the part of either party to live up to his obligations. Neither does T Bar C Cattle Co. (2013) Ltd. assume any financial obligations to collect or enforce collection of any monies between parties and any legal action that may in exceptional cases be taken must be between the buyer and the seller. T Bar C Cattle Co. (2013) Ltd. assumes no responsibility for any credit extended by the seller to the buyer. The buyer must look to the seller for fulfillment of all guarantees and representations made hereunder.
Rights and Obligations
All announcements made from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay close attention to such disclosures.
The above terms and conditions of the sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller and be equally binding to both. Resale of animals following purchase in this sale shall constitute a separate transaction and the rights and obligations of the two parties connected thereto are not covered by the terms and conditions of this sale.

Announcements
Should any bull fourteen (14) months of age or over fail to prove a breeder after being used on females known to be breeders, the matter shall be reported in writing to the seller within six (6) months following the date of purchase or six (6) months after the bull has reached fourteen (14) months of age. The seller will have the right and privilege of six (6) months to prove the bull a breeder. No guarantee is given that semen collected from the bull will freeze.
Exception Guarantee
Bidders unable to attend the sale may phone, wire or mail their bids and instructions to the sale managers, auctioneer or special representatives. Bids must be received in sufficient time prior to the sale.
Delivery
We will assist in arranging transportation wherever possible. Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold.
In cases where the animal is subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproduction techniques after the sale, this guarantee shall be null and void.

Errors
Each animal will carry papers issued by the Canadian Simmental Association, unless otherwise specified. A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer for each animal after payment has been made.
Will be available sale day. We strongly recommend that insurance is purchased for full value. All announcements at sale time, written or oral, supercede any written material in the catalogue.
