CSA Meeting Update

W

hat a great time to be in the cattle business and especially the Simmental Breed! This spring’s Bull Sale season has once again shown that Simmental is widely accepted across the country and is viewed as an important part of the Canadian Beef industry. Bull sale prices reached new highs with numerous high sellers and more bulls were sold at higher value than ever before. Congratulations to all of you that contributed to this success! During this time many of you have had the opportunity to meet our new Industry and Member Services Representative Meghan Black, as well as Carla Schmitt who is the CSA Programs and YCSA Coordinator. With the amount of Simmental sales on the calendar it was also necessary for Barb Judd and myself to cover some of the events and it was great to visit with many of you. During the bull sale run CSA staff was also busy preparing for the March Committee and Board meetings that were held March 22nd to 24th. This is always a busy and productive time as we review the progress made since our October meetings and plan for our summer and fall events. The series of meetings began Sunday afternoon with the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation meeting which focused on the 2015 Foundation auction that will be held during the CSA Convention banquet on August 1st in Lindsay Ontario. Membership structure and scholarships were also discussed as well as ways to better communicate what the Foundation is and to promote its responsibility of supporting Youth, Research and Scholarships. The CSA Promotion Committee meeting met early 4

Monday morning and discussed a wide range of topics that deal with the promotion of the Canadian Simmental both domestically and abroad. This discussion included: - CSA will again provide the opportunity to the CSA membership to submit ideas and to provide input the direction of future CSA promotion. - An online Simmental bull buyer survey will be posted to gather information towards the way people are using Simmental bulls along with suggestions on what we can do to improve our product. - CSA will once again host a Provincial Presidents meeting in Ontario during the 2015 CSA Convention. - Postage costs continue to increase and to challenge the magazine’s profitability. - All sale reports from CSA members will now be included in Simmental Country. The CSA Breed Improvement Meeting followed later in the morning with the committee and non-committee members working through a very full agenda. American Simmental EVP Dr. Wade Shafer and Dr. John Crowley from Livestock Gentec were also in attendance to provide technical support to the committee. Some of the high points of discussion focused on: - Freeze Branding as an official animal identity instead of a tattoo was discussed and will not be recognized by the CSA at this time as it would require each individual tattoo/brand to be registered with provinces that do brand inspection. In consultation with Livestock Inspection Services legal counsel it was explained that it would require a change to provincial legislation to change this requirement.

- Transfer of the Simmental DNA sample Bio-Bank from Quantum to Delta. - Dr. Shafer and Dr. Crowley walked the committee through the Spring 2015 Genetic evaluation. - Milk EPD calculation was discussed and the process explained and although some individual animals are sometimes questioned the data usually correlates to the EPD. - Calving ease EPD was discussed and explained. Data is only used from first calf heifers as there is not enough difference that can be measured in calving’s reported from mature cows. - Data collection and possible value in obtaining carcass data from the Beef Information Exchange system (BIXs). Value of this data will depend greatly on the accuracy and validation of parentage of the progeny reported to the BIXs process. - Breed average EPD differences between Canadian and American populations was discussed. - An ongoing discussion on the value of the CSA implementing a dollar value index continued and it was decided not to pursue at this time due to the fact that Canadian cattle are disadvantaged based on the priority of the traits used in the formula used to calculate the numbers. - International Genetic Solutions (IGS) was explained by Dr. Shafer. This consists of twelve breed organizations that have come together to do genetic evaluations with a database of 16 million animals; 400,000 new animals every year. This is a significant mass of data that represents the largest Beef multi-breed data set in the world. - CSA will begin providing registry service for nonCanadian Simmental breeders providing they meet all of the requirements of our by-laws. This is a sound business move in many ways for the CSA and will possibly assist in marketing more Canadian genetics to other countries. - A thorough discussion was held during the Breed Improvement Committee meeting regarding the differences between Canadian and American Purebred status and the issues this creates for the CSA office staff, as well as Canadian members buying animals in the U.S. After examining all of the details, including the rounding up of percentages in the American registry system, it was decided by the CSA board that there would be no changes made to the CSA upgrading table, and that the current standards for Purebreds in Canada would remain. - Lab turn-around times have improved slightly and we are working to find ways for our systems to better interface with each other. We continue to recommend that CSA members allow a four week turn-around time

and that there is no rush process available. - Through Livestock Gentec, CSA along with other Breed Associations has been part of applications for funding that if successful will provide reduced genotyping pricing. - There will be Simmental Innovations portion in the schedule of the 2015 Canadian Simmental Convention in Lindsay, Ontario. Tentative speakers to date are Dr. Steve Miller, Dr. John Crowley and Dr. Wade Shafer. - An update was provided from the March Beef Value Chain Roundtable that was held in Ottawa. Many topics of interest were touched upon including the recent BSE case and the process of communication as it impacts Seedstock producers during bull sale season. A presentation on BIXs was also delivered as well as an update on robotics and how the implementation within the packing sector if our industry could help in creating efficiencies. The CSA Board of Director meeting completed the three days with additional reporting and discussion on other matters: -The YCSA are hard at work planning the National YCS Classic that will be held in conjunction with the CSA Convention July 30th to August 2nd. - The National YCS board has submitted a request to the CSA board to approve the collection of a ten dollar yearly administration fee for all YCSA members. This will be in addition to the current twenty-five dollar membership fee but will not apply to the year that a new YCSA membership is applied for. This was approved by the CSA board of directors and will be implemented January 1st 2016. - A Draft YCS Policy and Procedures document has been developed and approved by the National YCS board and will be put forward for approval at the National YCSA AGM in Lindsay. - The CSA board adopted a new CSA Director’s Guidelines document that has been developed to provide description CSA of Director responsibilities and expectations. This is similar to what is provided to directors of other industry organizations and will also be adapted for CSA committees. - The Board accepted the application from the Saskatchewan Simmental Association to host the 2016 National Simmental Show at Canadian Western Agribition. We encourage you to contact one of your CSA directors or myself for further information regarding anything mentioned in this article or anything that you may have questions on. All the best with your spring seeding operations and we hope that you will make plans to join us in Lindsay Ontario for the 2015 Canadian Simmental Convention! 5

Carcass data important for seedstock development research

ccess to carcass data as well as other production information through the Beef InfoXchange System (BIXS) will be an invaluable tool for cattle breeders, geneticists and beef researchers in their efforts to build a better beef animal. Information is the key, and carcass data along with other information from the production chain will not only guide cow-calf producers, but seedstock breeding programs as well, says Jennifer Stewart-Smith, president of Beefbooster. Michael Latimer with Canadian Beef Breeds Council says the information will be useful if it can be connected to a specific breeding program on the farm. And as a geneticist Dr. John Crowley of the University of Alberta says the carcass data will be a useful tool in understanding how the complex world of genetics influences traits in individual animals. Carcass data is the real report card on the efforts to develop breeding stock by the seedstock operator, the time and commitment of cow-calf operators to produce a healthy weaned calf, and the management of feedlot operators in taking an efficient animal to market weight. “BIXS is all about information and the value of that information will help in the development of EPDs (Expected Progeny Differences),” says Stewart-Smith. “But first we have to have the information. If all goes as planned with the flow of information it will be invaluable. We need to get that information back to the producer, and ultimately back to the seedstock operator as a guide for breed development. “We can use a number of tools now to develop animals with expected breeding values — desirable traits — but it is getting the carcass data on a large number of animals that really tells us which bulls have the proper traits to produce what the market wants.” EPDs are numbers that predict the genetic quality of future offspring or progeny of a particular bull, cow or heifer. Stewart-Smith has been a long-time supporter of BIXS, seeing the potential it has to benefit seedstock development, improve production and feeding efficiency, and foster consumer confidence in a humane and safefood beef production system.

12

“BIXS has the potential but it needs the whole industry to get involved,” says Stewart-Smith. “There needs to be a meaningful flow of information back and forth through the production chain involving seedstock breeders, cowcalf producers, cattle feeders and packing plants.” As a beef seedstock developer, Stewart-Smith says carcass data is valuable to the Beefbooster breeding program, but she also needs other information from the production chain to properly analyze and manage genetics. Along with individual cattle I.D. numbers, information most useful to her includes birth-date specifics — was it the actual birth date or the start of the calving season; gender of animal; feedlot intake date; feedlot in-weight; slaughter date; and carcass quality information such as carcass quality grade, rib eye area, backfat depth, marbling, hot carcass weight, yield grade and lean meat percentage. “From these pieces of information we can calculate numbers that are important,” says Stewart-Smith. “For example, using feedlot in-date, feedlot in-weight, kill date and hot carcass weight we can estimate the average daily gain of a group of cattle and average daily gain is an indicator of efficiency. Also, using birth date, feedlot indate and kill date we can calculate days to harvest — birth date to kill date — or days on feed.” Back at the breeding level, Stewart-Smith can use this data to improve and expand the EPDs associated with any bull. Beefbooster has developed EPDs for key production traits. “And using a selection index we weight those traits according to their economic relevance,” she says. “With carcass data and other production information we can develop EPDs for all carcass traits and rate those for their economic importance.” Stewart-Smith says while carcass data is important, information on efficiency from the cow-calf and feedlot sectors may be more useful in developing EPDs. “Carcass information will be the icing on the cake, not the cake,” she says. “Too many carcass traits are antagonistic to cow-calf efficiency.”

She notes it becomes a balancing act. As they finetune breeding programs to select for one trait, they don’t want it to be at the expense of another desirable trait. “We don’t want to select for one carcass trait and have it affect fertility, or some other feature. That’s where we consult with researchers at Livestock Gentec to help us in the process.” Michael Latimer, executive director of the Canadian Beef Breeds Council agrees BIXS has potential to provide very useful information across the beef industry production chain, but that information has to be properly applied. “It will be valuable information for the cow-calf producer and ultimately purebred operations to receive carcass data, but it has to be made relevant to a breeding program,” says Latimer. “A producer can receive carcass that tells them which calves had certain grades and other carcass quality characteristics, but they have to be able to connect that to a specific bull in the breeding program. If they have five or 10 bulls out on pasture during breeding season, for example, they have to be able to identify which ones are producing the most desirable carcass traits.” Latimer says for the information to be truly useful for the commercial cow-calf producer he believes it may require DNA testing of animals to match sires and dams with individual calves, or more segregated breeding season management and record keeping which identifies one or two bulls with a group of females. And further, to be of value to the purebred operator, the cow-calf producer has to be willing to share that breeding information with the seed stock producer. “So BIXS has potential to provide very useful information in managing the on-farm breeding program, but it may require some important management changes by cow-calf producers to make it truly useful, ” he says. Dr. John Crowley says carcass data will be an important tool for all sectors of the beef industry and help direct research.

“This information is useful to the producer to guide them in their breeding program on the farm, but also has value to the seed stock producer,” he says. “There are so many links in the production chain from the producer, then sometimes to a backgrounding operation, then to the feeder and ultimately to the packing plant and it turns out we are not always producing the end result product that everyone wants.” Crowley is a research associate with the University of Alberta’s Livestock Gentec centre and is involved in genomics research as part of the Alberta Bovine Genomics Program. He is also director of scientific and industry advancement with the Canadian Beef Breeds Council. While researchers are understanding and mapping the genetic makeup of beef cattle the real value is in learning how that relates to the various traits within the animal. Crowley repeats a quote by Dr. Mike Coffey, a genetics researcher at SRUC – Scotland’s rural college. “In the age of the genotype, the phenotype is king.” “And that means even though we are beginning to understand the genotype – the genetic makeup of an animal, it is the phenotype or the traits of animal that can be measured that are really important,” says Crowley. Having access to carcass data, from large number of animals across different breeds will confirm to researchers whether they are on the right genetic trail. “But the information will also tell us where research has to head,” says Crowley. “A much larger database will enable new genomic research. The key is having data on carcass type to get a better understanding of genetics. “BIXS is an excellent framework for connecting the whole industry and providing data flow to help us achieve breeding objectives.” Article provide by Beef Cattle Research Council. From the Director’s Chair

Let’s Talk Finance Maureen Mappin-Smith – CSA Finance Chair

F

or those of you who don’t know me, I am Maureen Mappin-Smith and along with my husband Eric and my family, own and operate Mappin Simmentals Ltd. and SilverSmith Farms Ltd. near Byemoor, Alberta. I am in my second year of being a Canadian Simmental Association Director and currently sit as the Finance Chair. I would like to congratulate fellow Simmental seed-stock producers on a FABULOUS spring bull sale season and extend a huge THANK YOU to all of the commercial producers and ranchers who put your trust in us by purchasing Simmental seedstock this spring. With new record prices continuing to be written on all classes of cattle, I think we are all riding a nice high. To those of you have stuck with it, even when things weren’t so rosy in the business; good for you and enjoy these good times. Although there are leaders in our industry saying we have yet to see the high in the market, there are also those in the business that are saying we are seeing the highs right now, and we have nowhere to go but down. I don’t view myself as an optimist or a pessimist, but I am a realist. Working in the financial services industry for several years in order to support my cow habit, has taught me to keep my pencil sharp and my calculator ready. You never know what’s headed your way! Without a doubt, the last 15 years in the beef business have been volatile, but the business owners who have a handle on their finances will always be successful as they are prepared for whatever curve-ball may come their way. Over the years, through being in a lenders chair, and later operating a farm financial consulting business, a few common themes came to the forefront with most business owners I have had the pleasure to work with. Even when times are good, fiscal responsibility is important. This is a great time to ask yourself some questions and think about how your financial decisions may be impacting your business: 1. Clean up your credit. With good profits on most classes of cattle, what a great opportunity to ‘take care of business’ and pay the bills. If you have anything behind, get it paid up to date. It may even be a good time to make extra payments on those higher interest loans or pay them off altogether. Your credit history follows you for years, and it’s remarkable how one or two late payments can make the difference between a good credit history and a poor one. Banks and finance companies place a heavy emphasis on a credit score, firmly believing if you are comfortable being late on your credit

20

card or truck payment, they also stand a good chance of having similar issues on that new loan you are applying for. Clean up your credit if need be; debt is always a good place to stash extra cash. 2. Capital expenditures. Times are good. Your business is profitable, and it is so tempting to make those purchases you have been waiting to make until this time. Are they necessary-will they make your life easier? Will these purchases make you money or save you money in your business? Ask yourself questions such as these before you make that purchase. And also ask yourself if you would be making this purchase if cattle prices were currently at 2010 levels? 3. Are the payments affordable? Most long term asset items that are purchased are wholly or partially financed, either through a bank or through a finance company. Interest rates are low right now, which is great as most of your payment goes towards principal. But what if interest rates start to climb? What if your income declines? Before you go to your bank to finance that ‘must have’ item or improvement, pencil out a simple cash flow projection. Will there be enough income after expenses to afford your existing payments as well as a few new ones? Have this calculated prior to going to ask for financing-nothing is more impressive to your banker than when you go in with a well thought out proposition. Lenders use your financial information to calculate several ratios which indicate how healthy your business’ finances are and your ability to make payments is #1. And don’t be afraid to ask your banker about these ratios and how you are doing, as they are useful management indicators. Although financial analysis isn’t too alluring to most people, as business owners we need to be aware of where we have been, where we are, and where we are going financially. I have touched very briefly on several important factors with regards to maintaining the fiscal health of your business but there are many more. If the current marketplace is truly here to stay for a while, that is fabulous for all of us. If, or when, we do experience a downturn in the market, make sure your business is ready to weather the storm. Maureen Mappin-Smith CSA Finance Chair

Women in Simmental Country

Passion, Hard Work & Family – Building Blocks to a successful Farm Operation -Written by Lee Hart

D

onna Jackson doesn’t see her life outside the beef industry — not in her foreseeable future anyway. She has pursued many interests over the years from cross-country skiing competitively, being a 4-H leader, to currently working on her black belt in Karate. However for the western Manitoba beef producer, advocate, wife and mother, cattle have always been and will always be a part of her life. Jackson and husband Carman, today, run about 200 head of purebred Simmental and Charolais cattle, with a few commercial animals at High Bluff Stock Farm near Inglis, MB. They have built their purebred operation over the past 30 years. “At this point in our life we aren’t focused on herd expansion, rather we are really focused on Carman & Donna improving the genetics of our current herd, says Jackson, the Mother of five grown and successful daughters. “We encouraged all of our daughters to go and get some off farm education and experience before they came back to the farm. Possible herd expansion depends a lot on how many of our daughters are interested in farming. If they all end up coming back to the farm I suppose we will need a few more cows and if none end up coming back, I suppose we’ll need a few less, chuckles Jackson. But I don’t see us ever not having cattle around.” Jackson is a born and bred cowgirl. She grew up on her parent’s purebred beef operation. Her mother Elaine and her late father Bob Digby operated Rolling D Charolais at nearby Dropmore, MB. She was involved in the 4-H beef program growing up, and that is where she met her future husband Carman, whose family started EGC Simmental Farms 45 years ago. She and Carman have been married 31 years. Jackson earned a bookkeeping diploma at college in Brandon and worked for a farm supply company, before she and Carman settled in to build High Bluff Stock Farm. The farm is named after the farm Carman’s grandfather homesteaded in 1914. He built the barn on higher ground, and painted the name ‘High Bluff ’ on the barn, we thought it would be good name for our farm,” says Jackson. Developing our own purebred business in our early 20’s, while starting a family was a big undertaking, recalls Jackson. “Nerve wracking at times but it was what we both wanted to do,” she says. We started farming with the EGC Simmental herd and soon after incorporated 35 head of Charolais cattle and High Bluff Stock Farm was born.” Today they are running about 60 head of purebred red and black Simmental, 140 head of Charolais and as well as a few commercial Red Angus cows.

22

“At one time we had more commercial animals than we do now and we used to finish the steers here on the farm,” she says. “I think one of the best combinations you can have is a Simmental/Red Angus female bred to a Charolais bull. That cross produces an easily recognizable calf that is going to perform well in the feedlot and on the rail. Particularly when we were finishing cattle we could see how those animals outperformed others in the feedlot. And when we were able to get carcass data back we could really see how the genetics worked.” It was a winning combination.

Family Operation

Erin, Autumn, Fawn, Tomina & Haylan

Along with building the beef operation over the past 30 years, the Jacksons also raised five daughters. Erin, 29, works for Monsanto as a DEKALB field agronomist, Fawn, 28, is the Manager of Environment and Sustainability at the Canadian Cattleman’s Assoc., Haylan, 26, is a history and English teacher in Rossburn, MB, Autumn, 24, is completing her bachelor of science in nursing at the University of Alberta nursing school in Red Deer, Alta., and Tomina, 19, is working on her Agriculture Business Diploma at the University of Saskatchewan. All the girls have been involved in the beef industry their whole lives. They were involved in 4-H, helped with chores on the home farm, and owned their own beef animals as a means to help save for their further education. Tomina, although attending school, currently owns a small herd of Simmental cattle. In the High Bluff yard the girl’s cattle are the ones with pink ear tags. Producing top quality purebred cattle, which ultimately produce quality beef animals for the commercial producer, is Donna Jackson’s passion in life. She and Carman, with careful selection of genetics, guided by tools such as EPD’s, ultrasound testing, feedlot performance, and carcass data have develop a top producing herd. “Carman, my daughters and I make a good team” says Jackson. Carman is passionate about genetic selection, I take the lead on herd health and marketing and the girls bring a lot of passion and new ideas to the table. It has taken us years to develop the quality of cattle we have on the farm today. We’re always working to fine tune traits and to bring performance to the next level.

“We have the two breeds, but Simmental makes a tremendous cow,” she says. “It works so well in a cross-breeding program. I believe cross-bred Simmental cows should be the foundation of every commercial herd. We’ve found the Simmental/Red Angus cross makes an excellent cow. We have been working for 30 years to produce strong dams that produce an excellent cow family.”

Responding To The Market

She is pleased to see how the Simmental breed has transitioned from the larger framed cattle of the 1970s and ‘80s to a more moderate size breed with excellent conformation and structure. At High Bluff Farm, the white and tan markings of traditional Simmentals have given way to the solid red and black colors. “And that is largely in response to what customers wanted,” says Jackson. “The market first wanted solid red Simmentals and later we added the solid black coloring. And now we are starting to see the market asking for cattle with a bit of white blaze on their face to better identify the Simmental breed. As you go along in this business it is all about producing what the market wants.” Among the features High Bluff has developed in their Simmental breeding program are females with good conformation, good feet and legs, good udders and a quiet disposition. “We have been calving most of our herd in February keeping them close to the yard and the calving barn, so you are working closely with them much of time. That helps to develop a quiet herd and also helps you identify those that don’t fit the program.” Jackson has always been a hands-on herdsperson. She spends a lot of time out working with the cattle. I wanted to be a role model for my daughters, show them that they could do anything on the farm that they set their mind to. It wasn’t always easy when the children were young —  five children within a nine-year span while helping to look after the cattle and run a farm business made for a busy schedule to say the least. Jackson attributes much of their farm and family success to having great support and mentors in their lives. “We were fortunate when the children were young, to be close to both families and that we were able to hire some help at the house,” says Jackson. “Somehow we just made it all work.” There were plenty of days when she’d be busy with the cattle during the day, get the girls in bed in the evening, and then spend several hours at night working on the farm books or herd records. But it all got done. “And really the herd grew as the girls got older and were able to help more,” she says. “We were a true farm family, everyone helped out. When we went out to move cattle to different pastures, or for processing there was quite a team. Now Carman and I go out to move cattle and we look at each

other and wonder where all that help is,” she says jokingly. Being able to balance life and a successful farm business at such a young age enabled Carman and Donna to compete in the Outstanding Young Farmers Program, where they met many like-minded Canadian Agriculture enthusiasts. Today they encourage and help recognize the achievements of other young farmers through continued involvement in this program. The Jackson’s also have a crop operation on their farm that includes growing pedigreed wheat and barley, along with commercial canola, the Jackson’s have hired some help. Her brother Jason Digby is a fulltime employee on the farm and they have two seasonal employees that help during the peak crop and cattle production seasons, respectively.

Marketing Program

Jackson is also quite involved with marketing as well. High Bluff has been showing cattle at beef shows since they started farming. The main shows the attend include AgEx in Brandon — that’s an event they’ve attended since before they were married — as well as Canadian Western Agribition, Regina, and the CCYA annual conference and show. “We don’t show cattle at Agribition every year, but even if we aren’t there with a show string, we certainly try to catch both the Simmental and Charolais show and visit with many commercial and purebred producers,” says Jackson.   “Over the last 17 summers many of our holidays with our girls have included attending and or organizing the annual Canadian Charolais Youth Association show and conference.”   And occasionally they have participated in the Calgary Stampede steer show and Farm Fair in Edmonton. While attending shows, and fitting cattle for the show ring is a lot of work, it is also a very valuable experience on several levels. “It is important from a business aspect to show people the quality of cattle you have,” says Jackson. “And we always enjoy talking with commercial cattle producers — whether it be customers or visitors — and hear what they are looking for for their breeding programs. “And it is also a very social time. When the girls were younger we would attend these events as a family, and you get to meet and make friends with other breeders. You’re producing cattle, but this is very much a people industry and it is important to keep in touch with friends and perhaps learn something from each other.” One of Jackson’s fondest memories involves showing one of their foundation Simmental females, still in the herd, and fondly referred to as “Chubby”. In 2006 Chubby, officially registered as EGC Much More 72P was named Reserve Champion female at Agribition. “She was also selected Champion at Brandon in 2005 and was shown in the RBC Supreme at Agribition the same year — it was a very exciting 23

event for our family,” says Jackson. “We have had the privilege to be in the RBC Supreme a couple of times with Charolais bulls as well and it is always a thrill and an honour to stand among and so many GC Much More 72P was named quality animals in a world Reserve Champion Female at Agribition class event.” While the show itself is important, Jackson says it is lead up work at home that gives her the most satisfaction — bringing the calves in, halter breaking, feeding and getting them ready for the upcoming event. Showing cattle is an important part of the overall marketing program that culminates each year with their annual on-farm bull sale. While in the earlier days they sold most of their bulls through private treaty, for the past 12 years, as numbers increased, they’ve held an annual auction in March at her parents’ farm facilities at nearby Dropmore.  Depending on the year they’ve offered between 50 and 60 Simmental and Charolais bulls, to an average of about 100 buyers who travel from a 200-mile radius to attend the event. Jackson is quite involved in early winter in helping prepare for sale day, which is handled by Transcon Livestock sales management, and preparing their sale catalogue with Bob and Heather James of Jamesway Enterprises. “And sale day is always a very busy and a very exciting day,” says Jackson. “We have amazing family and neighbours that help us make sure sale day is a success, by helping with food, getting cattle ready and setting up. We’ve always preferred having a live auction and bringing the bulls through the show ring as it is good for people to physically see the quality cattle we have.” High Bluff markets mostly yearling bulls, although in recent years they are also raising more two-year-olds. They calve part of the herd later in the spring which is easier for the Jacksons to manage, rather than have everything calving in mid-winter “and also we are finding more customers are looking for two-year-old bulls, so we try to meet that need as well,” says Jackson. They were pleased with the results of the 2015 sale that resulted in Charolais yearlings averaging $8,019, Charolais two-year-olds averaging $6,438, and Simmentals averaging $6,325 for an overall sale average of $7,314. Carry The Message

Along with the day-to-day ranch and home life, Jackson also believes it is important to educate the broader community of what the beef and agriculture industry is all about. Their farm has completed the Verified Beef Production certification program and is just awaiting the final audit, and she has completed the Beef Advocacy Program offered jointly by Canada Beef and the Canadian Cattleman’s Association. The Advocacy Program provides beef producers with the tools and the background to explain to the general public and consumers facts about the objectives and proper production practices of the modern beef industry. The Jacksons were involved in producing a short video on their farming operation which is part of a “Raised at Home “ marketing program by the Co-op grocery chain, aimed at better informing consumers about where and how their beef is produced. They have also hosted groups of journalists, food writers and chefs through the Manitoba Canola Growers “Be Well” program to explain how beef is produced. This year they will also be hosting a group of high school students from Roblin, MB at the farm to explain crop and livestock production. And Jackson also gives presentations through agin-the-classroom programs. “I am just getting started in this advocacy area, but we feel it is important to do what we can to help educate people about what farming and beef production today is all about,” says Jackson. “There is a lot of misinformation out there so it is important to open our doors so people can see our commitment to producing safe and healthy food through proper beef production practices.” While their business is beef production, Jackson says the real bonus is the valuable personal connections and friendships they have made over the years. “This industry has been a great environment and opportunity to raise our own family,” she says. “But we have also made so many friends and met some wonderful people along the way.” She noted in particular people like Miles and Bonnie Glasman who operate M & J Simmental at Russell, MB who have been long time mentors and friends. “They have helped us so much over the years and we have become great friends,” says Jackson. “And now we work back and forth as needed helping each other. And it is just a great relationship. But you meet so many great people whether they be other breeders or customers — it starts with raising cattle, but this is really a people business.”

any commercial producers and purebred seed stock cattlemen often start to question the appearance of lots of droplets appearing on the semen evaluation forms of young bulls. These cause frustration when bulls have to be retested. They collectively are probably the most numerous defects we see as veterinarians when performing breeding soundness exams (semen evaluations) in the spring. This article will hopefully shed some light on the situation and take away some of this frustration by providing a better understanding of what they represent. There is no doubt we see many more droplets on average in young immature bulls that are just reaching sexual maturity (puberty). These bulls are less active and especially when not housed close to cycling females droplets really are a very frequent occurrence. One must realize two important facts. One is when maturing in the testicles epididymis (little knob at the bottom of the testicles) 100% of the sperm start with a proximal droplet. This is wiggled or shook off as the sperm matures and travels through the canals within the epididymis. Because the sperm with droplets are essentially not mature fertility is affected. When we look at distal droplets there are essentially two types those severely affected (pathologic) and those that will be shook off later (physiological). In a study by Dr. Jacob Thundathil of the UCVM (University of Calgary Veterinary Medicine) he found that the percentage of droplets in ejaculated sperm goes down in the time it is chilled to be frozen and put into straws for artificial insemination. This time interval is only three or so hours so if we extrapolate the same thing must happen with natural breeding. As the sperm is swimming up the vagina and into the uterus a number of these distal droplets are shook off and are left behind. As a result the distal droplets aren’t near as serious a defect as the proximal ones. As mentioned all sperm when formed start with a proximal droplet and as maturation in the canals of the epididymis these become distal droplets and then are shed off in the normal chain of events. If we see lots of proximal droplets they are often associated with other sperm defects such as head defects in a number of cases. Droplets are really the main cause why many young bulls fail their first semen evaluation especially when done at a very young age. This is why it is not recommended to test a beef bull before 12 months of

M

32

age and bison mature much later so 18 months for them is the minimum age. As an average that is why about 50% of twelve-month-old bulls pass and that is elevated to 75% by the time they are fourteen to fifteen months. Many very young bulls that fail on initial semen tests pass in subsequent ones one to two months later. The issue is why we as veterinarians can’t predict ahead of time which ones will improve greatly so the only way is retesting them. If the young bulls are housed close to cycling females and ejaculate off the senescent semen that in my opinion helps to speed up the improvement. With the veterinarian documenting on the semen form the morphological defects you can see over time if improvement is happening. The worst case I have seen improve was a young bull with essentially 100% proximal droplets and over several months the percentage kept decreasing and eventually he had excellent semen as a two year old. He was a show bull and the question always comes up was he too fat, inactive, et cetera which may have added to his issue for sure. When we encounter lots of droplets in mature bulls (that is much rarer) veterinarians usually are cognizant of which other defects accompany the droplets to determine the overall prognosis. Again the proximal droplets are much more severe than the distal droplets keeping in mind a certain percentage are shed before the sperm contact the egg in a natural breeding situation. If as producers you are evaluating semen forms then if most of the defects are distal droplets in a young bull and he still passes his semen test (overall defects are less than 30%) there is a very good chance those defects will lessen with maturity and usage. Over the years we have upped the ante by testing even younger bulls. In some instances bull sale dates have remained the same yet the purebred producers are calving later which translates into veterinarians testing younger and younger bulls. If just selling off the farm test the bulls as mature as possible. The warm spring weather and cows cycling close by really makes for an easier time evaluating sperm than in the dead of winter and with bulls just over one year of age. Even one to two weeks older makes a big difference. If semen evaluation is done later the pass rate will be higher and it will be easier on everyone including the bulls. Don’t ask your veterinarian to try evaluating bulls less than one year of age. Please wait till they are older as it is for yours and the bulls benefit.

Par Bruce Holmquist Directeur général - Association Simmental du Canada

Compte-rendu des réunions de l’ASC

Q

NEWS RELEASE

DR. MURRAY JACOBSON RECEIVES AWARD Dr. Murray Jacobson received the Don Matthews Memorial Award at the Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Beef Breeds Council (Council) held in Calgary, March 26, 2015 The Don Award Memorial Award was instituted in honour of the late Don Matthews, a Past President of CBBC as well as many other accomplishments including the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame. The award is presented by the Canadian Beef Breeds Council to an individual who exemplifies excellence and passion in the purebred beef cattle industry. Dr. Murray Jacobson is the pioneer, frontrunner, originator of embryo transfer in Canada. This practice has become an everyday tool for the advancement of every purebred breed in Canada. Murray graduated from Vet School Washington State in 1969 and then spent a year doing a large animal internship at Guelph. In 1970 Murray joined the Rockyview Animal Clinic in Calgary along with other well-known vets such as Brian Edge, Wayne Burwash and Ed Moss. In late 1970 or early 1971, David Dryholm, a dentist in the cattle business founded Alberta Livestock Transplant (ALT) and interested Murray in embryo transfer. With the help of a man from Cambridge University from England, ALT performed their first transfer on October 16, 1971 which resulted in calves in 1971. In the summer of 1972 Murray went to England to take an ET Course at Cambridge. In 1974 Murray left ALT and with his vet partners established Calgary Transplant just west of Balzac. In about 1977, the Rocky View Animal Clinic broke up and Murray moved to Lethbridge, bought a farm and joined the Alberta Disease Research Institute. In about 1979 Murray joined up with Dr. Darrell Dagraft who had been doing embryo work for Simmental Breeders of Canada at Cardston. They formed BovaTech at Murray’s Shaughnessy, Alberta farm. In the early 1980’s Darrell and Murray experimented and perfected the transformation of surgical procedures to nonsurgical. This of course was a huge step in embryo transfers as there was very little risk to the donor. In 1981 Murray again pioneered the expertise of freezing embryos. This procedure has become invaluable to the purebred industry sales around the world or implantation at a variety of locations or being able to use recipients when a donor fails.

38

For over 30 years Murray and his BovaTech partners or staff travelled Western Canada harvesting and transferring embryos of all purebred breeds. They also started the practice of drawing semen from herd sires for in herd use. In those busy years, besides Canada, Murray implanted embryos in the US, New Zealand and 3 times in Mongolia. Murray also trained individuals from Costa Rica, Russia, Britain, Argentina and Australia how to collect and transfer embryos. Along with his successful embryo transfer career, Murray maintained a very well respected herd of purebred Simmental cattle. He also served on the Canadian Simmental Association Board and was their President from 2006-2008. Murray began to slow down in 2011 with the dispersal of his cow herd. 2012 saw him sell BovaTech and also his farm. Retirement finds Murray and Marilyn travelling the world, spending winters in California golfing and living in Lethbridge. CBBC’s vision is to provide a unified voice in support of the purebred genetics provided within the Canadian beef cattle industry. Its mission is to ensure the continuity, growth and prosperity of the Canadian purebred cattle sector as an integral component of the Canadian beef cattle industry. Its mandate is to support Canadian purebred cattle producers through service provision aimed at genetic improvement, animal health, extension services and information dissemination; promote Canadian beef cattle genetics both domestically and internationally by identifying market opportunities, facilitating access through timely intelligence and informing the commercial industry of the attributes of the Canadian beef advantage both at home and abroad; represent the purebred cattle sector to government by advocating effective policy, ensuring market access and enhancing competitiveness. or those whom I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting during the past month while I was attending bull sales, let me introduce myself; my name is Meghan Black, and I’m originally from New Brunswick where my family runs a small cow/calf operation. At a young age I gained a passion for agriculture, more specifically the beef industry; so I got involved. I became very active in the 4-H program as well as several Junior Associations in the Maritimes. If there was an opportunity to travel, whether it be to a show, sale, conference, workshop etc., I jumped at it. It was a chance for me to learn, network, gain new experiences, and to get involved. People won’t have the opportunity to meet you if you don’t show up. So that’s what I did, and by that often was referenced as “that girl from New Brunswick.” Throughout my twenty plus years that I participated in junior beef activities, I had the opportunity to travel across the country and compete on a National level at cattle shows. Showing, clipping, and judging were all things I thoroughly enjoyed and excelled at, yet the highlight of my involvement within the 4-H and Junior programs was helping younger members. Through my involvement with the Junior Associations, I gained a seat on the National Junior Hereford Board for several years, thus leading to an opportunity to work for the Canadian Hereford Association with my main focus being National Advisor to the CJHA. I’m a graduate of the Cattlemen’s Young Leaders program, and had the opportunity to mentor with Dennis Serhienko. My experience with CYL allowed for networking, travel and learning from some of the best in the industry. Through this program I was able to sit on several round tables as well, including that for Sustainable Beef, and the Canada/USA Round table during the Denver Stock show in 2014.The opportunities offered within the beef cattle industry have played a large role in the continued passion I have for agriculture, the experiences I’ve been offered, and my drive. After graduating from Dalhousie Faculty of Agriculture

42

with a degree in Animal Science, I moved to Alberta to pursue my career. Over the past year and a half of being a resident of the west, I am asked quite frequently, “what’s a young lady from New Brunswick doing in Alberta?” As terrifying at the time as it was, I moved across the country to take advantage of an opportunity, and dive into the beef industry. After a year like this, with prices at an all-time high and the excitement back into the beef industry, who wouldn’t want to be involved! With my position as Canadian Simmental Association Industry and Member Services Representative, I hit the ground running the beginning of March attending sales across the three Prairie provinces. Not only have I witnessed the excitement of being involved in the beef industry this spring, but the Simmental breed by far has blown me away. The quality of cattle offered at sale, after sale, the high prices, the want and demand of Simmental genetics certainly exhibits the strength of the breed. As the beef industry continues to boom, so will the Simmental breed! I’m excited to be a part of the Canadian Simmental Association team, to become more active in the breed everyone wants to be a part of, and to work with all of those involved. I sincerely want to thank all who have welcomed me with open arms as I start out with the CSA. It is evident from my short time being involved that there is a strong passion and commitment by those associated with the Simmental breed. I look forward to visiting with as many of you as possible at upcoming spring and summer CSA and industry events and encourage you to contact me for all of your Western Canadian advertising needs in Simmental Country! Until next time! Meghan Black CSA Industry & Member Service Representative

DID YOU KNOW... THE HERD LETTER FOR 2015 IS

“C

GENETIC EVALUATION DEADLINE FOR TOTAL HERD ENROLLMENT (THE) HERDS:

In order for data to be included in CSA genetic EPD evaluations, it must be received by the CSA office no later than MAY 15th for the Fall Evaluation and NOVEMBER 1st for the Spring Evaluation.

PERCENTAGE REQUIRED FOR PUREBRED STATUS

Producers purchasing bulls from the United States or semen from American bulls should be aware of differences that exist between Canada and the United States in the percentage of Simmental required to qualify for purebred status. The Canadian Simmental Association requires a male to be 15/16 Simmental to reach purebred status while the American Simmental Association accepts males who are 7/8 Simmental or less by Canadian standards as purebred. As is regulated by the Federal government through the Animal Pedigree Act, it is the responsibility of the purchaser to ensure that these bulls meet the requirement of being 15/16 Simmental if they wish to register that animal in the Canadian Simmental herd book as a purebred. Please see our website under CSA Bylaws for our Upgrade Table (Determination of Simmental Fractions.)

GENOTYPE TEST REQUIREMENTS

As of January 1, 2015 all Simmental sires are required to be genotyped using a minimum 50K SNP panel. Natural service sires now require the same level of genotype testing as AI sires who have had this requirement since November of 2012. This is a higher density, more informative panel that will add value to the Simmental genetic evaluation. All donor females continue to require a 50K test.

GENOTYPE TURNAROUND TIME

Members are reminded of the need to allow a minimum of 4 week turnaround time from the time the lab receives their samples for genotyping until they receive results.
