It takes a while to wrap your head around the idea of selling the cattle. You start to realize that it’s a thing that must be done. Over time, your mind gradually absorbs the idea. Then you begin to make a plan. A date is set, and there’s no looking back.

As I faced the prospect of letting go of my life’s work, I also realized that I have been among the most fortunate of men. There’s nothing I would rather have done with my life. What better industry and place, to raise a family in a beautiful rural setting. What a privilege to have lived on my own terms on the family farm in Spring Creek. Sharon and I have raised our family in one of the greatest places on earth, among some of the best and hardiest, most resilient and thoughtful people. Our kids will always be Saskatchewan farm kids, and we know that’s the best start in life we ever could have offered them. My 102-year-old mom has spent her whole life here, watching her family grow and thrive, all thanks to the Simmental industry and the opportunities it has afforded us. The appreciation I feel every day is heartfelt and sincere.

In 2017 when the Canadian Simmental Association celebrated 50 years of Simmental in Canada I was honored to be inducted into the Canadian Simmental Hall of Fame. I had had pretty humble beginnings here on the farm, and to think I was being recognized by my peers was very satisfying, and continues to mean so much to me.

I had taken over a family farm, which has become a Century Farm, but my family wasn’t really in the cattle business. I took animal science at university. I ran into some people there whose parents had just imported some Simmental cattle from France and so it was exciting times. The whole industry was starting to import continental breeds from

Europe. Around here at that time it was probably 90 per cent Hereford cattle. I had always liked cattle as a kid and was always following cow families and their performance. I always thought they needed a little more milk to be more productive and the Simmental breed offered that. After I graduated from university my first job was teaching courses to beef farmers and as it happened my teaching partner was also in the Simmental business. The purebred industry was expanding and it was exciting to be part of something new. I worked for Ag Canada in the livestock division in Winnipeg and Calgary, and I started purchasing some Simmental halfblood cattle in 1973. In 1976 I came home to farm full time. My dad had commercial Hereford cows. The CSA’s open herd book policy allowed me to upgrade, so that’s what I did. It became a passion and didn’t really seem like a job; it seemed like something fun to do. I could see the potential of the breed; I could see what they were accomplishing. They really did have a lot of performance compared to traditional breeds at the time. Fast forward to the future. The Canadian commercial herd is now predominantly a Simmental and Angus cross herd and the population of Simmental cattle is second only to Angus cattle in Canada.

I’ve tried to involve myself in associations and committees due to my passion for advancing the breed. First of all in the late 1970’s there was our local association, the Crossroads Simmental Association, of which I was a director, then president. After serving a couple of terms on the SSA, I became a director of the Canadian board for six years, the last two years as its President. Along the way I served on many committees: Agribition committees, bull sale committees, test station committees and local sporting committees. When you’re proud of your breed and your operation, you want to be a part of these associations. I think it’s one’s duty to take their turn and help run these

associations. I also had ideas of where I wanted to take the business, and sometimes the best way to get that done is to be involved yourself. I was proud to be a part of the CSA board when we introduced THE (whole herd reporting) and maternal upgrading. I believe both initiatives have helped ensure our breed’s recent and future successes.

Canadian Simmental cattle as we know them today are not the Simmental cattle that we started with in the early 1970’s. The Simmental breed has changed from a spotted red and white breed to predominantly solid red/black cattle, while still maintaining valuable Fleckvieh/traditional genetics. Industry acceptance has been huge. To be a part of all that change is gratifying, and to know you played a role in it. Had the breed not changed it would just be a hobby or antique breed. You have to adapt the breed so that it fits the market. This process has enabled me to do this for my whole life, and have some fun along the way doing it.

In the early 2000’s, I started building an Angus herd to complement the Simmentals. The large Angus gene pool and semen availability certainly aided me in building an Angus herd of which I am very proud. I believe my Angus to be structurally correct, eye appealing with extra volume and easy doing abilities. The Sim/Angus cattle are so easy to like, and make up a huge part of Canada’s commercial herd.

Superior cowherd productivity is the biggest driver in terms of profit for your operation. A strong reproductive herd has been our goal since the beginning. I have always kept a large group of replacement bred heifers which enabled me to make further selections along the way. Along with this efficient reproduction, udder quality, foot quality, docility and eye appeal have always been stressed. While there isn’t an EPD for eye appeal, it is much more enjoyable

to be working with cattle that are pleasing to your eye and the eyes of your customers. The sires of my cow herd have always had superior testicular development which goes a long way to making more reproductively efficient cows. Take advantage of the work that has already been done with these strong cow families to ensure the success of your operation going forward.

I’ve met so many great customers and lifelong friends through the cattle business. Thank you to all of you. I wish to encourage and support all the young couples who have decided that the cattle business is what they will dedicate their lives to. I pass the torch to you. I know that the industry is in good hands. I feel satisfied that I’ve done my bit. I know that whoever purchases these animals will be adding honest, reliable genetics to their herds, and I feel good about that. Working in this industry will keep your heads on straight, will keep you in touch with reality, will keep you grounded, and will help you know what is important and what isn’t.

Welcome to the Spring Creek Simmental and Red Rose Angus Complete dispersal on December 20, 2022, at the ranch headquarters, Moosomin, Saskatchewan… a day in Simmental history. Brian and Sharon McCarthy have spent a lifetime in agriculture, livestock, and the Simmental breed… half a century building one of the elite breeding programs in the industry.

As he built cow families that were efficient and predictable… the quality of the bull pen enabled Spring Creek to breed and market endless amounts of bulls to both purebred breeders and ranchers throughout North America. Only in this complete dispersal, can one get to bid on and acquire the factories… whether you are looking for a foundation donor or the best heifer calves in the herd. The Red Rose Angus herd built over the last decade or so, offers the same type, quality, and mindset, as used in building the elite Simental herd.

From the early years of halter breaking bulls for the Regina Bull Sale to the 17 “Pursuit of Perfection” bull sales hosted at the ranch, Spring Creek’s success has been based on quality and repeat customers. This being a complete dispersal, you can acquire any of the herd bull battery or the exciting set of herd sire prospects with their mothers. The recipients carrying embryos, all the semen and the tanks it’s stored in… everything sells.

U.S. BUYERS INFORMATION

All purchases made that are going to the States will be charged $150/animal to cover the cost of export testing and paperwork to have animals ready to export. Trucking, U.S. Customs and Veterinarian charges will be the expense of the buyer. Buyers are welcome to pick up their purchases at the farm if they prefer.

TERMS

The terms of this sale are cash, cheque, E-Transfer or wire transfer.

BREEDERS GUARANTEE

As this is a dispersal sale, all cattle sell with no further guarantee. Bull calves that are purchased and left at Spring Creek Simmentals/Red Rose Angus under the bull development program will carry a guarantee as mentioned in the details of the program.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

All Announcements from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in this catalogue. Buyers are urged to stay attentive for such announcements throughout the sale.

DELIVERY

Full settlement must be made before cattle will be released. Cattle are to be picked up at the farm or trucking arranged. All purchases must be picked up prior to December 31, 2022.

BUYERS RISK

All purchases become the responsibility of the buyer once the sale is over. We strongly encourage you to protect your investment by insuring your purchases.

LOAD OUT

All cattle will be available for load out as soon as settlement has been made. All cattle must be picked up by December 31, 2022.

ACCIDENTS

Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of people in attendance, neither the Sales Management nor Spring Creek Simmentals/ Red Rose Angus assume any responsibility in this matter and disclaims any liability, legal or otherwise in the event of accidents or loss of properly.

The cows were pictured in early August. All the calves, bred heifers, and herd bulls were pictured in late September. The heifer calves were pictured three weeks after weaning and they did not have creep feed. Videos were taken in Late October.

The information printed has been supplied by the seller and believed to be accurate. Updated sheets and announcements from the block will take precedence over any incorrect printed material.

POLL AND COLOUR TESTING

All animals are polled and color identified.

SEMEN/EMBRYOS

Semen storage is indicated by each lot. Shipping costs are assumed by the purchaser. Exportability is noted accordingly within the lot information.

BULL CALF WINTERING PROGRAM

We understand that buying bulls in December may not be the most convenient thing for everyone to do. So, we are offering a bull development program to assist in wintering and developing the bull calves for you. This option is only available for bull calf purchases.

*The decision to participate in this program needs to be made at time of settlement. The cost of the bull development is $1,200 per bull and will be applied to your invoice at settlement. Insurance is highly encouraged and will be available at time of settlement, Spring Creek Simmentals/Red Rose Angus will not be liable for any injury, sickness or death of bulls left in our care without insurance.

All bulls are guaranteed to pass their semen tests by I5 months of age. We will work with the buyers according to their individual requirements for breeding timelines. In the event a bull does not pass his semen test by 15 months of age, a full refund will be made in the amount of the purchase price plus the $1,200 bull development cost.

This family began with the purchase of a bred heifer from Kappes Simmental. Herd sires used to expand this family were: GW Black Creek, Springcreek Red Tank 57P, Wheatland Red Teddy, and KOP Crosby. All the ‘Brooke’ cattle in this sale are daughters and granddaughters of the very maternal Springcreek Brooke 68Z. She was our highest selling cow ever at $50,000, selling to Maxwell Simmental and Sun Rise Simmentals. At this point, she has 55 registered progeny, with more to come. Her influence can also be gathered from her son Springcreek Spark Plug, the $95,000 high selling bull to Labatte Simmentals and Circle 7. I wish I had used his influence a little more as his progeny have super udders and are very attractive with great dispositions. There will certainly be many highlights in this section, including a couple of black ‘Liner 56U’ daughters.

The ‘Mickey’ cow family has essentially been on this farm forever. My Dad got a Hereford cow from his Uncle Jack and called it ‘Mickey’. In the early 1970’s, I started breeding this cow family to Simmental bulls and upgraded them eventually to purebred Simmentals. Any cow family that can remain in the herd for that length of time, has to be doing a lot of things right. MBJ 51D is a full sister to Springcreek Grand Slam, a very prominent herd sire for Bata Bros. in North Dakota. MBJ 102D is a powerful ‘Liner 56U’ daughter and MBJ 26G is sure to be a great one.

Rolex was a high seller in the Meadow Acres dispersal. When considering his purchase, I certainly noticed his dam and full sisters. His dam and three year old full sister were sale fea tures that day and I thought his full sister open heifer was the top black heifer calf in the sale. Once again, you will find easy calving numbers on Rolex. All the homo black Simmental cows in this sale were exposed to Rolex after a 25 days of AI’ing. Homo polled, homo black.

Monopoly was purchased from Dana & Megan Johns in their 2021 Bull Sale. They selected his dam from the Skors Dispersal and he came in dam. I purchased him on the strengths of his dam, his phenotype, his gentle disposition and his excellent calving ease numbers. All the black red car rier Simmental cows in this sale were exposed to Monopoly after a 25 days of AI’ing. He sells with his entire se men bank of 40 doses. Homo polled, red carrier.

Shamrock was the high selling bull in Ashworth’s 2021 Bull Sale. His dam is the famous Rock 14X cow that has sixty registered progeny including KWA Red Mountain, KWA Monarch and KWA Can-Am. His sire is a son of the very useful R Plus Venom. Shamrock has outstanding calving ease numbers, easily being in the top 1% for CE, BW and MCE. All of the Simmental bred heifers are bred to him, with the exception of a few AI matings. He is also very dark red which has become a very important marketing tool. Note that he has red hooves with a good foot. Progeny that come easy, are dark red with a proven pedigree will be easy to mar ket. He sells with his entire semen bank of 175 doses. Homo polled.

KWA MS ROCK 14X

Capitalist was purchased as a calf from Colton McIntosh. As a weaned calf, I could see his muscle mass in an attractive package. His good uddered dam has thirty-three registered progeny, including MRK Priority, a herd bull for Barry Labatte. He really has a herd bull presence, lots of muscle with an attractive front end and a big foot. All the red Simmental cows in this sale were exposed to Capitalist after a 25 days of AI’ing. He sells with his entire semen bank of 118 doses. Homo polled.
