If you own a cow herd, congratulations. The reports this fall were certainly one to remember and it’s exciting to see commercial producers getting rewarded for their perseverance. You deserve it. To all repeat and prospective buyers, we truly appreciate your support.
The bull pens this year is a culmination of 34 years in the Angus business, stacking multiple generations of cow families, top walking bulls and AI sires. All with the plan of providing quality breeding bulls with high levels of predictability. Lessons have been learned along the way, but the goal remains the same.
The cow herd is the anchor behind the bull pen. We select for a certain type of female that has proven to work here. We run them like commercial cattle and expect them to wean a marketable calf, breed back and gain flesh throughout the year. Not every cow can do it, and that’s okay, we can find another one that will. Any undder and feet issues tend to sort themselves out quickly. Deciding which bulls make the pen is heavily weighted by the mother behind every one of them.
The bulls have been sorted through several times throughout the year to determine who makes the pen. Steer price has pulled a few more out of the group than normal, with the top 45% making the cut. We put a high priority on early maturity, and our expectation is that these bulls pass their semen evaluation at 13 months of age. They were pictured on average at approximately 10 months of age this year.
The bulls were weaned on October 8th with no creep and developed in a responsible manner since. Their ration is balanced with a target of 2.3-2.5 lbs./day gain.

Juneau sons offer sure fire calving ease with heavy maternal traits. He saw us use his first year on heifers with all but one getting bred and we didn’t touch any at calving. Lightning’s first calf crop was very well received. There is only a handful to look at this year, but he saw very heavy use last summer on mature cows. His libido and fleshing ability are unreal. I’m really excited to see what he will do this spring on some top females. He is a maternally bred herd bull with built in calving ease.
