You will be asked to leave your driver’s license as a deposit until the headset is returned at the end of the performance.

If you arrive late for a performance, you will be seated at the first appropriate moment in the play in designated latecomer seating. You are welcome to move to your assigned seat at intermission. If you must leave the theatre during a performance you will not be allowed to return to your seat until intermission.

PLAYWRIGHTS
ALAN MENKEN Music Born in New York, Alan was a budding instrumental talent, developing an early interest in Beethoven and Brahms, later taken by the folk movement, all the while adding rock’n’roll, and virtually anything else to his ever-expanding musical universe. “Growing up, I was surrounded by a family that loved Broadway musicals”, says Menken, “Regularly we gathered around my father at the piano, and as he played and we sang, the house was filled with the sound of Rodgers and Hart, the Gershwins, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, and all the other great Broadway songwriters. As a child, I was introduced to the power of the American musical through shows like My Fair Lady, Fiorello and The Sound of Music.” “I showed an interest in piano at a very young age, but I hated to practice, so when my parents left the room I’d make up my own version of the piece. That’s how I started composing.” In addition to Beauty and the Beast, his many accomplishments include The Hunchback of Notre Dame; Aladdin; The Little Mermaid and Little Shop of Horrors. He has received many awards including a Best Song Oscar for Colors of the Wind from Pocahontas, The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. Alan’s upcoming stage and film projects include a new stage musical of Leap of Faith (opening on Broadway in the fall of ’10), a stage adaptation of Newsies and a new Disney animated musical, Rapunzel (slated for release holiday season of ’10).
HOWARD ASHMAN Lyrics Born in Baltimore, Ashman moved to New York and became an editor while he wrote plays, including ’Cause Maggie’s Afraid of the Dark; The Confirmation and Dreamstuff, a musical version of The Tempest. He wrote Little Shop of Horrors with Alan Menken which became the third longest running musical in Off-Broadway history, as well as the highest-grossing musical Off-Broadway. Turning his talents toward film, Ashman was pivotal in the renaissance of Disney animated musicals and in the development of Disney’s The Little Mermaid (Producer and Lyrics), Beauty and the Beast (Executive Producer and Lyrics) and Aladdin (Lyrics), all with music by Alan Menken. Ashman’s contributions to the revival of classic Disney animated musicals were perhaps best expressed by the dedication to the film Beauty and the Beast: “To our friend Howard, who gave a mermaid her voice and a beast his soul. He will be forever missed.” Ashman composed for the animated Disney feature Beauty and the Beast as well as Aladdin. He died in 1991. Ashman Sings Ashman, a CD of his work, with never-before-heard demos, including those from Smile, is available from PS Classics. Ashman’s papers are in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress. 27

PLAYWRIGHTS TIM RICE Lyrics
(Sir Tim to you) has been writing lyrics for musical theatre and related enterprises for over forty years, something he only intended to do for a few months while waiting to become a pop star. The waiting has been extended, mainly because of the world’s failure to accept him as a rock god, but also because of the distracting success of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita with Andrew Lloyd Webber; Aladdin, King David and Beauty and the Beast with Alan Menken; Chess with Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson and The Lion King and Aida with Elton John. He is well known in England, his home country, for his love of cricket and as a tolerable radio and television personality. He has won numerous awards along the way, including Oscars, Tonys and life-saving badges, but often for the wrong thing and often for simply turning up. He is currently working with Alan Menken on songs for a new film version of Beauty and the Beast, on a musical play about Machiavelli, and is plugging the recently released DVD and album of Chess in Concert starring Josh Groban, Idina Menzel and Adam Pascal. LINDA WOOLVERTON Book While working as a development executive at CBS, Linda Woolverton wrote two young adult novels Star Wind and Running Before the Wind. After her books were published by Houghton Mifflin, she abandoned development and began to write full time. She started by writing scripts for animated television shows. When one of her novels caught the attention of a Disney executive, she was hired to write the script for the animated feature, Beauty and the Beast. Upon its release in 1991, the film won the Golden Globe for the Best Comedy/Musical and became the first animated film to be nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award. Ms. Woolverton was then hired to write the screenplay for The Lion King (shared credit). She then re-wrote the script for Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (shared credit); writing for the animated feature Mulan and also wrote the Book (shared) for Elton John and Tim Rice’s musical Aida which ran for five years at the Palace Theatre. She went on to adapt the script of Beauty and the Beast for the Broadway stage and received the Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical in 1994. Linda Woolverton’s screenplay for Alice in Wonderland is a sequel to the original works by Lewis Carroll, directed by Tim Burton.

PLAY
Fairy tales have existed for thousands of years. They began as cautionary tales, stories created to preserve and pass along important information in the days before written language was developed. Storytellers learned early on that an audience was more likely to remember a story if it was entertaining, which gave rise to the sorts of fantastical and extraordinary elements that we have come to associate with fairy tales (a simple warning not to go walking alone in the woods is far less memorable than an account of a huge, talking, lumberjack-eating wolf). Because the struggles of humanity in those early days were so similar, fairy tales with very similar plots, characters, and motifs are found spread across many different cultures. The fantastical creatures and events in fairy tales always represent real life troubles, which is why we must pay close attention so that we can learn the solution. Many people are no doubt familiar with Beauty and the Beast from the 1991 Disney movie, which was the first animated film to ever be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. It is upon this film that the play you are about to see is based. However the original fairy tale is somewhat different from Disney’s adaptation. In it, Belle’s father is a merchant, not an inventor. Further, Belle is not an only child but has two sisters – two sisters who become jealous of how nicely Belle is treated by the Beast when she is forced to live in his castle. And there’s another difference: the Beast is quite generous and kind to Belle in the original tale – he only demands that she become his prisoner after Belle’s father steals something from his castle. Disney invented the Beast’s back story wherein a selfish young prince spurns an old beggar woman, calling her ugly, then is punished by being made ugly himself. The original fable offers no explanation of why the Beast is a beast, nor is the character of Gaston (Belle’s arrogant suitor) present. Disney’s additions significantly change the story, as well as the lesson it seeks to teach. The moral of the original fable can be summed up: “don’t judge a book by its cover.” However the Disney tale goes much further. By explaining to us why the Beast is ugly, it suggests that there are two kinds of ugly: that which is on the outside, and that which is within. The Beast is ugly on the inside – the enchantress simply makes his outer appearance match his inner self. It is only by learning to love and be generous that the Beast is turned back into a handsome prince.

Artistic Director Bob Baker set sail last September with the riotously entertaining The Drowsy Chaperone, demonstrated how a love gone wrong drove a gentle barber to insanity and gave Sweeney Todd an unexpected beating heart and now, with nary a leak in the hold, steers his craft into the safe harbour with tonight’s justifiably celebrated production of a maiden and the beast that loved her. Despite my tortured metaphor, it was a terrific season. How many times have you said to some poor sod who didn’t have a ticket,“Oh, you should have seen James MacDonald’s performance in Blackbird”or“Christmas is not Christmas any more for me without taking in A Christmas Carol?” Baker, with 11 plays in 3 distinct series, has once again chosen works with wide appeal while making sure that those of an edgier theatrical sensibility will not be disappointed.
BILLY BISHOP GOES TO WAR SEPT 18 – OCT 10/10
The season begins with one of the most popular works ever written in Canada. Billy Bishop, a n’er do well and goof-off from Owen Sound, took to the air in World War I and found the element that defined him forever. He became Canada’s greatest flying ace with 72 victories to his credit. On June 2, 1917, Bishop got up really early one morning and flew alone over enemy lines. Before he got back home he had shot down three aircraft and destroyed several more on the ground. He won the Victoria Cross for that one. Back in 1978, actor Eric Peterson and pianist John Gray wrote a whimsical but celebratory musical play based on Bishop’s exploits. It’s a work that is still oft presented today. Mainstage Series the Citadel’s go-to guy for just about anything theatrical, John Ullyatt.“John is perfect,” observes Baker.“He’s just the right age, he has the storytelling ability and he can sing.” Billy Bishop flies again beginning September 18 on the mainstage. Intimate Apparel by Lynn Nottage is a high-powered romance about,“a young woman seeking independence in ragtime Manhattan.” In 1905, New York was a place where affluence and poverty existed in uneasy union. There was opera and vaudeville. Baseball fans were singing that new song, Take Me Out to the Ball Game. American playwright Lynn Nottage sets her play in this time of social turbulence. It’s the story of a 35 year old maiden seamstress named Esther who sews undergarments for the ladies of society as well as the ladies of the numerous sporting houses. She feels she’s been left behind by life when two men discover her. One is a shy Jewish tailor – the other a robust chain gang prisoner who proposes marriage. Nottage writes a sweeping epic, and an intimate romance, in a world of class, greed and ambition. The work opened in New York in 2003 and was the most popular play produced last year in regional theatre. A Toronto company, Obsidian Theatre, picked it up two years ago and mounted, what the reviews tell us, was a superlative production. (“Achingly touching,” read one.) Opens October 2. The really big theatrical guns are unleashed in early January. The play is Tracy Letts’Pulitzer (and Tony) award winning August: Osage County. The production will be directed by Baker who offers,“I haven’t wanted to get my hands on a piece

foreshadowing with Colin MacLean of material like this so badly since Angels in America.� The play centres on a reunion of the spectacularly dysfunctional Weston family of Tulsa, Oklahoma. In three superbly well-written acts, issues such as drug addiction, alcoholism, suicide, aging, incest, infidelity and ultimately love occur in a play that has been compared to the best of Eugene O’Neill, Tennessee Williams and Edward Albee. This is an ambitious, serious work that will leave you wincing in your seat while you are doubled over with laughter. Catalyst Theatre is on a roll. Its last two productions, Frankenstein and Nevermore, have played to ecstatic reviews and full houses. Not only in Edmonton but all over the country. Their latest remounting of the two, here in Edmonton, sold out before the first actor declaimed a single word. The company centres around two very creative driving forces: designer Bretta Gerecke and playwright/composer/lyricist/director, Jonathan Christenson. The Citadel has commissioned their next show and is presenting it in the Shoctor, opening March 5. Christenson seems to be exhuming the gothic canon one show after the other. The production will be Hunchback, taken, of course, from the haunting tale by Victor Hugo. The Citadel is bringing its formidable development apparatus to bear on the work.“We are working with them to help develop and dramaturge it,� says Baker. As Christenson wryly announced to the assembled press at the launch of the new season,“It doesn’t exist yet but it HUNCHBACK MAR 5 - 27/11 will be unlike anything you’ve ever seen.� Let’s take a moment to talk about The Robbins Academy at the Citadel. 2010-2011 assembles all of the elements of the Citadel’s programs for creative development. That includes Play Development, the Young Companies, the Foote Theatre School and the various Education and Outreach programs, as well as the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program – which Baker terms, “a rigorous advanced training program that enhances and improves the skills of emerging and established theatre professionals.” Says Baker,“It will allow the Citadel to focus on a common vision. There is nothing like it in the country.” The Professional Program may be primarily aimed at helping working actors develop their skills, but sitting out there in the darkness, we have benefited greatly as well. After the company has spent exhaustive hours in Banff training in acting, singing, voice, movement, dance, stage combat and text analysis, Baker brings them back here and drills them in the production of a specific piece of theatre. The results have been exceptional, as anyone who has been enchanted by the Citadel’s productions of Pride and Prejudice and As You Like It, will attest. Next year, participants will be featured in two productions. The first is Tom Wood’s take on that hardy old perennial of swash and buckle, The Three Musketeers. And why not? Wood has breathed new life into The Servant of Two Masters, Peter Pan, Pride and Prejudice and A Christmas Carol. The company

The second show will be Little Women, The Musical. It opened on Broadway in 2005 and tells the heartwarming story of the four March sisters, feisty Jo, romantic Meg, pretentious Amy, the kind-hearted Beth and their beloved Marmee while their father is away serving during the American Civil War. “It’s a good adaptation,” says Baker.“I saw it at a matinee in New York and was engaged by its sweetness and charm. I think in Pride and Prejudice we demonstrated we can find a way to make Jane Austen not feel like an essay. Or homework. We can do the same for Louisa May Alcott. I’ll be directing both – with a little help from a co-director and a team helping me to put them together.” There will be an additional production in the Robbins Family series, Rick: The Rick Hansen Story, produced in partnership with the Manitoba Theatre for Young People.
With a season of such promise, it would surely be downright churlish to miss even one show.

Jeremy Baumung is an Edmonton-based playwright and actor. Earlier this season at the Citadel, Jeremy appeared in Sweeney Todd and A Christmas Carol. Last season at the Citadel, Jeremy participated in the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program where he played Mr. Collins in Pride and Prejudice and he also played the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz. Since graduating from Grant MacEwan he’s worked with these companies: the Freewill Players, Northern Light Theatre, The Azimuth Theatre, Theatre Prospero, Concrete Theatre, The Alberta Worker’s Health Center, The Edge, THEATrePUBLIC and Nextfest. His play Dead Man Talking has toured as far as Auckland, New Zealand, and his monologue Homeless just finished an early spring tour with Azimuth Theatre. This summer Jeremy will be performing at the Edmonton Fringe in Ken Brown’s Spiral Dive Three.

Recent credits include High School Musical for Viva Musica (Kelowna); Little Red Riding Hood for Alberta Opera; Little Shop of Horrors for the Mayfield Dinner Theatre and The Full Monty for Ground Zero Theatre (Calgary). Ashley is a graduate from the MacEwan Theatre Arts Program in Edmonton, where she was blessed to perform such roles as Jeanette in The Full Monty, Irene in Crazy For You, Penelope Pennywise in Urinetown and Lilly in The Secret Garden. Aryn McConnell is a ten year old girl with a huge passion for singing and performing. A student of Victoria School of the Visual and Performing Arts, she has had the opportunity to perform in the Victoria School productions of My Fair Lady and Wade in the Water. Aryn has been taking vocal lessons and performing since the age of six and continues to wow audiences and judges with her natural abilities. Aryn won her age category at the Northern Star Talent Competition for three years in a row and can regularly be found performing at events throughout the city. Besides performing, Aryn loves playing her Nintendo DS, spending time with her friends, and she is an avid Webkinz collector. Her cat Walker and her dog Gabrielle, who she shares with her Grandma, are the loves of her life! 49

John is a founding member of Firefly Theatre – Edmonton’s unique circus theatre, with whom he created and performed in Duck Duck Bang. In June 1999 Bob Baker became the first Edmonton-born artistic director in the Citadel Theatre’s long and distinguished history. Since that time there has been a significant rejuvenation of the company. Programming has expanded to include theatre for families and young audiences and an annual series of provocative contemporary theatre in the 200 seat Rice Theatre. The Mainstage series has grown more diverse and daring and audience numbers have increased in all areas, while a renewed commitment to the development of new work has led to an unprecedented number of world premiere productions. The Foote Theatre School has expanded dramatically; now boasting four Young Companies providing professional level training for 16-21 year olds in Acting, Musical Theatre, Playwrighting, Design and Stagecraft. Mr. Baker also initiated the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program now in its second year. He has directed 37 plays for the Citadel and his production of A Christmas Carol has become, for the last ten years, a beloved Edmonton family tradition. He was the artistic director during the successful turn around of both the Phoenix Theatre in Edmonton (1982-87) and the Canadian Stage Company in Toronto (1990-98). Last season, he directed the world premiere of Tom Wood’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and The Wizard of Oz. Mr. Baker is consistently inspired by the dedication and talent of the theatre artists and their desire to grow and learn.

Music Director
Earlier this season Don was giving classes to both Citadel Theatre young companies, as well as participating in his second season with the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program participants. Most recently Don was the music director for Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Last season, Don was the music director for The Wizard of Oz and the music director/composer for Pride and Prejudice. Recently for the Citadel he provided original music for The Constant Wife and was music director on Beauty and the Beast, Oliver!, Guys & Dolls and provided original music and was sound designer on Blithe Spirit. His history with the Citadel Theatre includes West Side Story (co-production with Theatre Calgary), The Sound of Music, Cabaret, Into the Woods, Aspects of Love and Duddy. Recently he returned to the Stratford Festival for his 14th season to provide original music for Brian Bedford’s production of King Lear. Mr. Horsburgh has provided original music for 19 productions and music directed Threepenny Opera during his tenure at Stratford. He is the recipient of five Dora Awards for his contributions to Rigoletto; A Little Night Music; Fire and Lilies and a Sterling Haynes Award for outstanding music direction for Cabaret. 54

Last season, Phillip choreographed The Wizard of Oz and previous to that Beauty and the Beast. Most recently Phillip directed and choreographed a brand new musical called Big Time Operator at Sheridan College. Leslie Frankish was most recently the production designer for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. Leslie’s selected Citadel credits include set and costume design for The Wizard of Oz, The Forbidden Phoenix, Pride and Prejudice, Beauty and the Beast (Sterling Award), A Christmas Carol, Oliver!, The Constant Wife, Peter Pan, Blithe Spirit, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Measure for Measure, Servant of Two Masters and Present Laughter. Ms. Frankish began her design career at the Citadel in the 1980’s as a resident designer for the Citadel Youth Theatre. Other resident designer positions include The Phoenix Theatre, 1984 – 1987 and The Shaw Festival, 1988 – 1999 where she designed Pygmalion, Misalliance and Mrs. Warren’s Profession. As well, Ms. Frankish has designed for major theatres across Canada including set and costume design for Angels in America I and II, Singer and Into the Woods for Canadian Stage Company; Hard Times, Lilies and Claptrap for the National Arts Centre; La Bête for Theatre Calgary; A Little Night Music and The Caretaker for the Vancouver Playhouse.

Lighting Designer
Christopher Dennis is currently the Assistant Resident Lighting Designer for the Metropolitan Opera. He has served as the Resident Lighting Designer and Lighting Coordinator with the National Ballet of Canada for 14 seasons. He has created memorable and evocative lighting designs for many of the company’s productions, including James Kudelka’s Cinderella, Matjash Mrozewski’s A Delicate Battle and Jean-Pierre Perreault’s The Comforts of Solitude. In addition to his time spent at the National Ballet of Canada, Christopher has designed for The Banff Centre as well as Modern and Contemporary dance companies such as Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie, ProArte Danza and most recently Moonhorse Dance Theatre. Mr. Dennis’ lighting designs are in the repertoires of ballet companies around the world, including American Ballet Theatre, San Francisco Ballet, Boston Ballet and West Australia Ballet. In addition to his work in dance, Mr. Dennis has designed lighting for various theatre companies including The Stratford Festival, Theatre Calgary, The Grand Theatre (London, On.) and Obsidian Theatre. Christopher is a member of the Associated Designers of Canada, and would like to thank his wife Cynthia and his two daughters Mackenzie and Remi, for all their love and support.

This season at the Citadel Wayne was the assistant director and stage manager on The Glass Menagerie, worked on A Christmas Carol for the seventh year and he also directed Blackbird. Last season, he co-directed The Blonde, the Brunette and the Vengeful Redhead alongside James MacDonald, was the assistant director for The Wizard of Oz and was the assistant director/stage manager for Doubt, A Parable. Wayne is also the co-artistic director of Blarney Productions (along with John Sproule); an artistic associate with Shadow Theatre and is the current artist in residence for the Citadel Theatre. Some of his favourite credits include assistant directing Shining City and The Forbidden Phoenix for the Citadel; Three Days of Rain, While My Mother Lay Dreaming, Sexy Laundry and Between Yourself and Me; co-directing Almost, Maine, Three Viewings and directing Glorious and The Dazzle for Shadow Theatre; directing Marty Chan’s God’s Eye for Paper Tiger Productions and Afterplay, The Christian Brothers, Madagascar, The Good Thief, A Body of Water, Orange Flower Water, Skirmishes and The Year of Magical Thinking for Blarney Productions.
NICOLE OLSZEWSKI Assistant Stage Manager Earlier this season at the Citadel, Nicole worked on Sweeney Todd and last season on The Forbidden Phoenix. As a stage management/ technical theatre graduate from the University of Regina she has worked across Western Canada in dance, theatre, and opera. Favourite recent credits include Dirty Rotten Scoundrels for Theatre Calgary; The Rake’s Progress for Pacific Opera Victoria and The Pillowman and My Name is Rachel Corrie for Hectik Theatre. Last season, for her work in the arts community of Regina and her co-founding of the company Hectik Theatre (2005-2009), Nicole was nominated for both a YWCA Women of Distinction Award under the category Young Women of Distinction, and for a Mayor’s Arts and Business Award under the category Innovation in the Arts. Nicole has twice been a featured artist in the Saskatchewan Arts Board Annual Report. Thanks to her family and friends for their continued support and long distance love.
