Swivel Butane Soldering Iron Ergonomics, portability and superb maneuverability are the cornerstone of Swivel’s innovation. Designed to fit in the tightest of places, Swivel enables the user to approach the task from almost any angle.

Inspiration I analyzed forms and structures from nature and incorporated these elements into technical features throughout the design. The materials I chose reflect dependable and durable elements found it natural world.

Persona Often regarded by many as the “do it yourself” guy, Mike resides in a small town outside Anchorage, Alaska. Mike’s decades of work experience have left his elderly hands a bit sensitive, though the demand for rigorous tasks around his home haven’t changed. Mike’s outdoor lifestyle and hobbies typically bring him into tight nooks and crannies, more than often, far from an outlet. Portability is essential for Mike considering his location. He needs a new soldering iron that is versatile yet comfortable to hold.

Research The options for Mike are currently either battery powered or butane gas-powered. A comparison between the two were made. The butane soldering iron was chosen due to its more versatile features. (i.e. temp. control, longer usage, attachments, torch feature.)

Market Opportunity This revealed that there was no soldering iron on the market that offered a rotational or pivoting feature in order to provide the user with more angles of approach. This opportunity was the cornerstone of the design.

Final Direction A variation of sketches and mock-ups gave a good general direction to the feasibility of a pivoting solder head.

Rotational Feature This unique design allows the user to adjust the angle of the soldering head through an inlet on the top of the housing. Enabling superb maneuverability with a wide scope of angles, Swivel surpasses its predecessors by approaching tasks at any angle.

Form & Function The funnel-like form was heavily driven by the function of the rotational ball joint feature, which had to fit securely in the housing while offering an ergonomic grip. Contrasting colors were chosen to draw attention to the main technical features of the soldering iron. R1.63 .50

On/Off & Temperature Dial The ignition is started by fully twisting clockwise so that the two lines joining. Then the temperature can then be adjusted by dialing more or less butane to the catalyst. Twisting all the way to the right will cut off gas flow.

On Electrical current heats catalyst and ignites butane.

Temperature Dial Adjusts the amount of butane flow to catalyst.

Off The current and butane flow stops once fully twisted.

Peak Child’s Flat Pack Chair The design parameters of Peak’s configuration were the ability to ship flat and then be erected on site with only the use of joinery techniques. Peak’s simplistic composition makes this a great beginner’s building project. Its organic composition represents a playful, yet open-ended interpretation for any child’s imagination.

Inspiration Drawn from natural elements and forms, Peak’s asymmetrical design reflects the undular shapes often associated in nature and organic architecture.

Persona I wanted this design to evoke the laid-back presence often associated with modern coastal homes. Typically, reclaimed wood accents as well as soothing colors carry this warmth and character.

Research & Kerfing Technique To get the circular form I wanted, I had to research techniques for wood curving and joinery. This landed me upon the age old practice of kerfing, which makes numerous cuts at minimal depth in close proximity to one another in order to get a flexible shape.

Refined Visual Elements An ellipse was chosen to be the shape for the locking mechanism because it was less obtrusive and played off of the oval shapes in the backrest. I then used a template as a visual cue to cut the excess wood in order for the locking mechanism to sit flush with the seat pan.

Gripster Utility Knife Applied ergonomics and intuitive form drove the design for Gripster’s unique attributes. Its ambidextrous capabilities, as well as its non-slip grip, give it superior user-friendliness. With a strong focus on the user, Gripster offers admirable comfort, regardless of how rigorous or demanding the task at hand may be.

Inspiration Elements of rigidity, fluidity and intuitive form drove this design. These forms demonstrate that hard lines can marry with soft surfaces, as represented by how this utility knife bonds with the user.

Research Through personal studies, I found that roughly three-quarters of people use a utility knife by wrapping all their fingers but the thumb around the bottom grip, then place the thumb on top. However, the lower percentile revealed that some prefer to grip with the index finger on top instead. This study drove the justification of the design, even though I felt that there were further assets that could be improved for the design to be more intuitive—such as a door handle or bike lever.

Features • The design of the contours and indentations distribute the pressure in sensitive parts of the hand. • The rear of the grip bows out in order to cover more surface area of the palm or fingers when cutting course material. • Gripster’s dynamic line further indicates the holding position and draws a direct correlation to the end of the razor blade when fully extended.

Donavon Frankenreiter Donavon is a professional guitarist and an active waterman who shares a deep passion for music. He is looking for a new home theater sound system which will provide crisp, deep, surround sound. He is a simple man with a simple taste and doesn’t want anything too obnoxious, yet relies on good quality sound to keep things upbeat.

• Wireless HD Audio • Audio Decoding: Automatically transforms abrupt high decibel sound waves that are often affiliated with certain television commercials. • HDMI Inputs range from 3-5 • Bluetooth accessible through phone, tablet or computer.

Design a unique and intriguing sound bar integrating the latest technology to transmit robust crystal clear sound. The manufacturing phase must be appropriate and fully leverage the processes between high and low volume design. Manufacturing Processes Phase I

Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) Heat and pressure in the form of argon or nitrogen gas is applied to the powdered material, resulting in parts that are unperson and high density.

Ceramic Coating

Items are place in chamber.

Pressurized gas & heat are applied in order to densify the object.

The object is submersed in a electrolyte solution with an added electric current passing though.

A hardening process that creates an extremely hard, wear resistant ceramic coating that can be used with light metals and alloys.

Next is the functional hard layer where hard crytallites are packed into a crystal matrix.

A thin layer is formed in the process called “plasma electrolyic oxidation� (PEO).

The fibers are pulled through a polymer bath where the drum coats each one with resin.

Filament Winding Filament winding uses a fiber combined with a polymer resin is used to form strong, hallow composites.

Fibers are unwoven from several reels at a time.

As a result, an extremely hard, non porous core and surface is formed.

The coated fibers are towed back and forth at an angle onto a pre-formed mandrel.

This matrix covers the entire part and completes the hardening process.

The resin acts as a glue to keep the fibers in the desired shape. Once cured, the part can be removed.

Household Vacuum Rather than continually stowing away a vacuum because of its visual disturbance. V1 offers a unique design elegance that enables it to remain visible and ambient in various settings around the home. Without sacrificing space and visual obstruction, subtlety is the backbone behind V1’s design.

Design Ethic This project simulates a conceptual product proposal to Braun for a new unique household vacuum. Though Braun has yet to design a vacuum, this concept integrates the traditional design ethos of Braun, attributed to designer Dieter Rams. It provides simplicity, compactness and utility in an elegant, small and useful device.

Research, Problem Statement & Realization Traditional hand-held vacuum designs consist of very complex shapes, surfaces and colors which are typically driven by their mechanics. These forms attract a lot of attention and are visually incongruous, often a visual nuisance to leave out. As the urban core has become revitalized, living spaces are now more compact, in addition, the concept of micro-homes has become popular. This leaves minimal space for stowing house hold appliances. This presented a unique opportunity for a Braun inspired product that was visual pleasing.

Persona Riley is an outdoors person who is environmentallyconscious and values simplicity. She lives in a micro-home and appreciates purity and subtlety in design. Due to her condensed living situation, she must utilize her space to the fullest potential. She needs a reliable, discreet vacuum that she can leave out in the open for quick clean-ups often caused by her foolish dog.

Ideation Quick sketches to more refined renderings lead to the finalized design direction.

Refined Direction Less obtrusive shapes were intensively explored and started yielding a more unique direction.

General Direction Forms subtly expressive of their mechanics was a plausible direction.

Final Direction & Form Analysis The idea of a vacuum blending unobtrusively on a bookshelf was a major design component. However, this train of thought limited my thinking process. To surmount this, I began drawing without the constraints of a bookshelf, yielding a form far different than before.

Mock-up Exploration The form began as very angular and cumbersome. As I explored some more, I revamped the direction based off of the cylindrical form. I pursued this shape because it offered the most compatibility with the hand.

Mock-up Exploration (Docking Stand) The stand for the vacuum was design to envelope the form as is stands upright. This gave it the appearance that it was emerging from the charging dock. Taylor Lane


Final Mock-Up Explanations Key ergonomic attributes allow the user to fully grasp the vacuum while comfortably fitting all fingers around the shape. This was achieved by blending a triangular form on top and a cylindrical shape below, to match the contours of the palm and fingers.

Having been born and raised in Venice California, I feel this eclectic atmosphere and diversity of people and places has shaped me into the designer I am today. As Skip Engblom once said, “It was dirty, it was filthy, it was paradise.� Growing up in this chaotic place, I have found an analogous relationship to design: problems are not usually going to appear in an orderly fashion, nor adhere to any structure for resolution. Yet it is our passion as designers to find the tranquil balance, solution and paradise within the problem.
