Facts Welcome Tårnby Main Library dates from 1982. After more than 25 years of use, and in the light of the major development having taken place in the library world and in society generally, the library was in need of extensive renovation and new decor. This work has been going on for some years and is now completed. The principle of the new decor is to divide the library into “Adventure” and “Knowledge”. The more lively activities “Adventure” on the ground floor and a quieter area on the first floor “Knowledge” with the opportunity for absorption and concentration. A separate meeting section facilitates meeting activities outside the library’s normal opening hours. Henrik Zimino Mayor

The Rotunda

The Rotunda is the central meeting place for everybody visiting the library and from here you may be inspired to explore all the other things on offer in the house. The Rotunda is designed for considerable flexibility and offers the chance to enjoy a great variety of social and cultural activities at all times of the day. Here you can eat your packed lunch, read the newspapers and magazines. On the big screen you can follow the latest news, and on the reading stairs you can sit by yourself or together with friends you have met. There is also room for all kinds of arrangements: lectures, films, performances and cafes both during opening hours - and outside these.

Adventure The general idea of the ground floor is to offer adventure and a great variety of opportunities for self-expression for users of all ages – here you can be inspired, entertained or just relax. The areas for children, music and media, instruction and adult fiction are placed around the Rotunda. The Info-desk is placed centrally by the entrance where the staff is ready to answer your questions. Fiction for adults and older children is divided into popular genres. In the theme area for novels you will be able to get ideas for reading and explore the new books. In the area for smaller children and parents you will find all the various offers to families with small children and there is room for playing. Gamer Street in the music and media area is an internet and games area for children, and The Box offers console games for young people and adults as well as mini cinema for all ages. IT instruction is on offer in the Learning Room – the rest of the time the PCs are available for use free of charge. The ground floor is the adventure room with space for lively activities.

Knowledge Knowledge is the buzz word for the library’s first floor with space for tranquillity and absorption. Non-fiction for older children and adults is placed here and is easily accessible. Seats and work stations are available both for the individual user and for groups. In the lounge area you can read newspapers and magazines or watch the news on the TV screen. The local history literature is placed here as well as an info-screen with local historical pictures and public information. Along the glass wall are PC work stations with study facilities - or you can bring your own laptop. There is room for small and large exhibitions about topical subjects which makes it exciting and interesting to go exploring along the shelves.

More library in the basement There is free access for the public to the open stack where part of the material collections are placed.

Other facilities Apart from the traditional materials such as books and music the library has many other offers: The Box for games and films, information screens for the mediation of news, games area for children, girls cave, exhibition facilities and stages. Events, literary cafes and tuition during opening hours make the library a vibrant place. The library as an active, cultural meeting place for the local community is an important function which is underpinned both through the physical design and through the activities that are offered and promoted here.

Meeting rooms There are 3 meeting rooms in the library’s annexe to be used by registered associations and for the library’s arrangements. The rooms are flexible and can hold up to 120 people. In the foyer you can enjoy a cup of coffee and find out what is going on in the library and elsewhere in the municipality. In the library itself are 2 meeting rooms available to all.
