Drinking on Island Time continued from pg 2 at the all-inclusive Renaissance Aruba Resort & Casino, owned by Marriott, situated on the port-side of the capital, Oranjestad. Usually, this particular area is quite busy due to the docking of cruise ships and all of their accompanying passengers visiting the island, however with the global pandemic it was quiet and meant a much less-crowded and much more-relaxing vacation overall. The hotel actually boasts two separate properties – one for adults only and one for families – but adults can visit and utilize the amenities at both. Each had different restaurants, bars, pools, Natural Bridge shopping and unique landscaping. The two properties are within a 3-5min walk of each other which was very convenient. Our actual hotel housed several restaurants including L.G. Smith’s Steakhouse, which happens to be the best on the island – we saved this for our last vacation dinner and it did NOT disappoint with a multi-course meal and some of the best steaks we have ever had! (And yes, it WAS included in our all-inclusive package!) But the best thing (and probably our main deciding factor) about this resort is that it has its own private 40-acre island of white sand and mangroves, exclusive for guests of the hotel, situated just off the coast and only accessible by boat. The island is a miniDonkey Sanctuary paradise in and of itself – they have their own flock of flamingos that roam the beaches and will eat out of your hand, along with a variety of wildlife from tropical fish to lizards and iguanas to pelicans! Guests have their choice of two different beaches: Flamingo Beach that is adults-only, and Iguana Beach that is family-friendly. Each side has private cabanas for rent – which we opted to do as an extra luxury on our trip and it was well-worth it for a whole day of private butler service, extra-cushy lounging couches, and a hammock overhanging the ocean below, amongst other amenities! Even when we didn’t have the cabana, the beach – both sides – were just fantastic. No crowds, soft ocean waves, and plenty of floats and snorkeling equipment to utilize, free of charge. Two beach bars with food and drinks are also aplenty on the island! Our excursions booked through Viator took us off-roading in an open-air Jeep with De

Palm Tours and scuba diving with Pure Diving Aruba. Both were exceptionally fun and gave us an entirely different view of the island. The Jeep tour was a full-day adventure that took us to the California Lighthouse, Alto Vista Chapel, back-roading to Aruba’s Natural Bridge made of limestone over the ocean, a short stop at the Bushiribana Gold Mill Ruins, Blackstone Beach which is one of the aforementioned secluded volcanic black-sand beaches, past the Ayo rock formations, to Studio Murano – a multigenerational family owned glass blowing and art studio, where we also had lunch provided, and then onto the island’s Donkey Sanctuary (which was ADORABLE, I might add!) and lastly to Baby Beach, one of the most well-known beaches on the island, for a dip in the ocean which was a perfect end to the excursion. The day was jam-packed but we were really able to see the entire island and everything in between – because you’re driving everywhere, both inhabited and uninhabited. Though it’s not for the faint of heart – it’s both very dusty and bounced around! Scuba diving was also fun – this was my second time diving – the first being in The Canaries, and every time is bringing me ever-closer to actually obtaining certification! Our guides were of Dutch descent and very much pro-divers themselves. A fellow RN from Ireland joined me on my underwater quest, who was actually on assignment in Aruba due to the pandemic. The waters at Tres Trapi (“Three Steps”) are sublime for diving. It’s a small sandy cove that’s known for being able to view sea turtles. Unfortunately, we did not get to see any turtles during my dive however we did see a few large Flying Gurnard fish swimming around in a circle together with their “wings” spread out that were either fighting or mating – our guides had never seen that before, so it was quite exciting to see! By now, if you’ve read this far, you must be wondering why I haven’t mentioned anything about beer yet! Patience, young grasshopper! Anytime I go on vacation, I seek out beer that’s brewed in the area, state, or country I am visiting. It’s not only great article fodder, but it’s a total passion and interest of mine to try new brews! Prior to visiting Aruba, I researched the different breweries on the island. To note, there are only two! Balashi Brewery and Fireson Brewing Co. Due to the Aruban government regulations regarding Covid-19, Balashi was closed to the public, however, Fireson was open and not terribly far from our hotel, so one evening we grabbed a cab outside our hotel and made the trek to Fireson, which is near the Holiday Inn Resort in Palm Beach. Fireson Brewing Company first opened in July 2018. A family-owned business co-owned by Radinka and Tony van Vuurden, it’s the only micro-brewery on the island. Because they are very small, they normally only have 1-3 beers available on draft, but dabble in a variety of different brews from Kölsch to Oatmeal Stouts. When we arrived, they had their New England Style IPA on tap. Baranca (7.3% ABV) is brewed with Mosaic and Amarillo hops giving this creamy mouthfeel haze-fest a dank and earthy flavor with slight citrus notes. It was very good! In addition, we opted to try some of Aruba’s classic bar food options via the Fireson Goodness Platter that included Funchi fries made of polenta and topped with shredded melted gouda cheese and served with homemade chipotle sauce, fried meatballs with barbeque sauce, Aruban beef croquettes with a spicy mustard sauce, and empanadas filled with meat and potatoes. We felt like locals at their local watering hole,

sitting outside on a picnic table with a beer in one hand and feasting on Aruban specialties with the other. It was a really great experience and I highly recommend if you ever plan a trip down to Aruba. While Balashi Brewery wasn’t open to the public for a visit, their beers are all over the island and easy to find both on tap and in the local convenience store. Balashi is a full-scale production microbrewery that was founded in 1998 via a partnership between local brewers and German beer experts who came to Aruba with the goal of creating a fresh, local island brew. Their flagship beer – Balashi – is a Pilsner that is a favorite with the residents. At 5% ABV it’s a light and classic beer that upon first sip is extremely reminiscent of a Heineken in my opinion! I had a taste of this on tap at our Balashi Chill swim up bar at the hotel while I was there. I then went searching on the outskirts of our hotel for some bottles and cans to bring home – or as I like to call them: Suitcase Beers! I was able to find 2 other Balashi beers: Balashi Chill and Magic Mango, which we popped open with friends when we arrived back home so everyone could have a taste from afar. Balashi Chill (5% ABV) marketed as a “Caribbean Beer” is every bit a classic Lager, best imbibed cold for that clean, crisp, refreshing flavor Magic Mango with a subtle aroma. It’s perfect for a hot day, sipping on the beach while doing some easy-livin’. Similar to a Corona, this would be excellent served with a lime. Definitely can see why the cashier in Aruba told us that THIS was her favorite! Magic Mango is a 5% ABV Pale Ale that is brewed by Aruba’s first female Brew Master, Marisol Heronimo. Marisol, a single mother of two, worked for 8 years in the quality control lab at the brewery. With a background in biochemistry, she was then offered the opportunity to become a Brew Master. She went to school in Berlin, Germany, and Magic Mango was her first brew when she came back to Balashi as head honcho. It became the fastest growing beer in Aruba in 2020, building an even bigger sales profit in 2021. The beer itself is excellent; brewed with mango, which is actually grown on the island, this limited-edition beer (which IMO, should become a staple) is light, sweet (but not overly so), fruity, and flavorful, with an aroma that smells even better than the beer tastes. We all rather enjoyed this Suitcase Beer! It’s truly great to see tourism returning across the globe. 85% of Aruban residents work in the tourism industry, so their economy and families were hit incredibly hard with the Covid pandemic. The people of Aruba are extremely thankful for the vacationers that are now returning to the island. They made that very clear in a number of ways while we were there. So, if you’re able, start planning a trip – It’s not only a return to “normalcy” for us travelers, but it’s also a return of jobs and paychecks for the many people who rely on tourism to live and pay their bills. The only micro-brewery in Aruba Cheers!

Preventive Medicine by Dr. Barry

The Energy Paradox I will get to Magnesium in my next article but I just read Dr. Gundry’s, The Energy Paradox and wanted to bring it to your attention. His earlier works including the Plant Paradox radically changed my approach to illness and wellness and since so many people suffer from a lack of energy I thought you should know about it. I also highly recommend Walking with Peetey the dog who saved my life but that’s another article entirely. That book too brings together many of the concepts I bring up in the office everyday but again...another day. The Energy Paradox addresses the issue around fatigue. When your get up and go has gotten up and gone. Many people erroneously believe that you run out of energy as you age but Dr. Gundry points out that you are just running out of the right fuel... that you are not recharging your body’s power and battery pack...your mitochondria. Mitochondria are tiny organelles that are found in almost every cell in your body and produce the vast percentage of all the energy your body manufactures in a day. If your mitochondria are happy...you are healthy. If they are not...you are not. Furthermore the mitochondria are heavily influenced by the bugs in your gut...there’s that microbiome connection again!

Mitochondria The mitochondria need full spectrum light (which controls energy production via quantum mechanics...read the book for details), properly constructed cell membranes (which brings us back to the omega 3/6 ratio I preach about and which your doctor can easily test for) and interestingly enough melatonin. Yes, it turns out the sleep inducing chemical produced by your pineal gland is a major protector of mitochondrial function. You don’t have to depend on just your own production of melatonin...it’s found in abundance in certain foods like olives, olive oil, pistachios and mushrooms. Dr. Gundry posits that it’s not the resveratrol in red wine that makes it so healthy, it’s the melatonin! The standard American diet overwhelms your mitochondria, damages your gut lining, changes the character of the microbiome in your gut and the processed foods damage energy production so it’s no wonder you lack the energy of youth. Furthermore, as Dr. Gundry points out, our eating habits overwhelm the gut and the mitochondria by presenting too many nutrients too often that the mitochondria shut down to protect themselves. When the mitochondria are damaged it TAKES energy to destroy them and activates the immune system. The restorative medicine field has long held that all disease is inflammation and all disease is

mitochondrial dysfunction and all disease begins in the gut and now you begin to see the interconnectivity of these theories. Dr. Gundry’s research takes a whole different approach to the benefits of the keto diet. I thought the keto diet produced ketones which are a clean fuel for your cells and mitochondria. He postulates that these ketones and butyrates are actually communicating to your cells that times are hard and the mitochondria have to be more efficient and more plentiful in response to this stress.

Olive & Sesame Oil are antioxidants

How to improve your mitochondrial function and thereby improve your energy production? Get exposed to light...get outdoors. Dramatically cut down on the linoleic acid in your diet (canola oil and the other seed oils) while adding Omega 3’s like fish, fish oil etc. He has long recommended olive oil but now adds sesame oil as an oil that is a powerful antioxidant, a blocker of inflammation at the gut wall level and even has a protective effect against electromagnetic fields! Do some strength training or resistance work which increases the number of mitochondria in your cells. Change the composition of the bugs in your gut and the signals they send your cells and mitochondria by eating more fiber (the term he uses to describe these substances that are made by the bacteria which then communicate with our bodies is post biotics). Finally he again promotes the concept of time limited eating. Not grazing from sunup to sundown and beyond as most Americans do but limiting the time you consume food so the mitochondria are not overworked and have some downtime to rest and repair. I am not going to get into the details about his dietary recommendations, his suggested supplements and his list of medications and chemicals to avoid. That’s too much for one or two columns to give justice to. This book is packed with details, loaded with references and pretty easy to read. If you want to change your energy level, lower your inflammation, and raise your overall health you want to read this book. Do yourself and your mitochondria a favor and read this book. You don’t have to get any special lab tests done to see results. You don’t have to read any testimonials. You will feel the results for yourself. This is called a N of 1 trial. You be the judge. Until next month...get well...stay well... J T Barry MD

Golf

by jon sherman

Things Change:

Don’t Let Nostalgia Hold You Back This past weekend a situation occurred that was an important reminder for me about golf, and how games change. It brought up an interesting “tug of war” that still occurs between the game’s past and future, particularly on how to improve and shoot lower scores. So I penned (well, typed) a little bit of a quick essay to explore these ideas further.

Why Are You Hitting Driver?

I was teeing off on the 10th hole at my home course, which is a 380-yard par-four. It’s not a particularly hard hole off the tee, so the driver is the correct strategic play, in my view. One of my playing partners suggested that since the other group member and I can hit our drivers so far (relative to him), there was no reason to use them. He thought it was a mistake and that we Open 67 should lay back because the hole has an unusual year Same O s green complex. wner Years ago, I probably would have agreed with him. Much of the popular “One of Syracuse’s Best Kept Secrets Since 1954” strategic wisdom was not to hit driver where you “don’t have to” and play for safety Italian Specialties off the tee as much as you could with a shorter club. If we had more time, I would tell him to read these two articles, but it sounded like his mind was made up: Driver vs. 3-Wood Off the Tee: What’s the Right Decision? and Can A Conservative Strategy Cost You Strokes Off the Tee? In an alternate reality, I could have bladed the wedge over the green and out of bounds. Or I could have laid back to 150 yards, knocked it close, and made birdie. But none of those scenarios matter. Smart strategic play in golf is not about singular events – it’s more about stacking the odds in your favor in the long run. We have a clearer understanding of how scoring occurs and how to make optimal decisions based on math and not just feelings. Either way, the exchange brought up an important reminder about golf and how information changes.

It’s Always Been a Bad Game of Telephone

I’m sure many of you played some version of the game telephone in school as a kid. The teacher whispered a word or phrase into one student’s ear, and as it made its way around the circle, inevitably, it would change. Golf is no different. Someone reads a swing tip in a magazine or watches a YouTube video now and dilutes the information to their buddies at the range. Usually, it doesn’t end well. Golfers have always been caught in a loop of bad, incomplete, or misleading information. I don’t think I have all the answers, but I’m confident a lot of the information I will give you will give you a better chance at improving. A lot of what I do is “deprogramming” many of the myths I was told as a junior golfer and that many of you have heard over the years. Keep your head down, and swinging smoothly doesn’t do the trick! At the same time, I’ve distributed plenty of advice that I thought was correct, but

Nostalgia Can Be a Limiting Factor

“Golfers have always been caught in a loop of bad, incomplete, or misleading information.”

There are certain fundamentals about the game that will never change. What I do think holds many players back is that they will stubbornly cling to older ideas just because “that’s the way I learned it.”

upon new, better research has been declared incorrect (or perhaps a half-truth). I try not to be stubborn and change my communication when it’s appropriate. The difficult part about golf is that there is a lot of nostalgia. And there should be; it’s a wonderful game with a rich history. However, when looking at information on improvement, tons of things said in the past aren’t true. For example, modern ball-flight laws have clarified the proper way to hit a fade or a draw. The way it used to be communicated to players was incorrect. Still, plenty of golfers learned how to hit a draw or a fade with technically wrong advice. But someone like myself struggled for years trying to hit a fade because I had the wrong cue. Now I believe golfers have a much better chance at getting it right because we have a much clearer understanding of what makes the ball curve. Additionally, phrases like “drive for show and putt for dough” have been updated with far more nuance and accuracy. But that doesn’t stop people from thinking the reason Jordan Spieth had his dominant stretch in 2015-2016 was all because his putter was so hot (he was arguably the best iron player in the world and seldom got himself into trouble with his driver). But because the respect for the past is so strong in golf, I still see a lot of resistance to newer, updated ideas. I even hear it every weekend on golf broadcasts when former players still cling to many of the things they were told when they first took up the game decades ago. Many people frown upon a green-reading system like Aimpoint when they first hear about the concept (I did too). I still hear it referred to as if it’s voodoo magic. But if they took the time to learn it, they would know it’s straightforward to understand and based on logical science. That’s not to say using a modern method like Aimpoint to read the greens is the only way to do it now; it’s just another tool that can help players. To be clear, I’m not declaring that all old information is bad. I still think Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, golf books ever written.

You’re Never Done Learning In This Game

To me, golf is a bit of a beautiful mystery. I love learning more about the game and how to get better. But at the same time, I don’t want to overload myself with too many ideas. So I try to filter things when appropriate and keep it as simple as I can. So when I tell players to play the back yardage and aim at the center of the green on most holes, that advice is rooted in me pouring over tons of data from multiple sources. But it’s hard to convince people not to aim at pins and try to make birdies because that’s always how people assumed they would lower their handicap. I guess my overall plea in this article is not to cling too hard to the past, especially when there is clear evidence that there is a newer, better way to do something in this game. That’s how progress works. At the same time, I don’t want to throw the baby out with the bathwater. There are still tons of valuable lessons to be passed down generationally in golf. I guess the hard part is discerning between the two. My goal is always to keep digging out there and do my best to steer you all in the right direction.

Sports Take by Mike Lindsley

Thank You, John Desko. Gary Gait will build a powerhouse staff at Syracuse and the Orange’s future is bright. We are all excited for SU men’s lacrosse to get back to the Final Four regularly and win a title, something the team hasn’t done since 2009. But this column isn’t about that. It’s instead for the guy who retired, John Desko. Perhaps people don’t give Desko his due because he hadn’t won a title since 2009. But that’s a bad approach. You see, the truth is, no one was better suited to coach Syracuse men’s lacrosse. Desko, an assistant for nearly two decades, took over

John Desko for Roy Simmons Jr. in 1999. He became the first person outside of the Simmons family to coach the team since 1931. You want pressure? Following up the biggest last name in school history, plus the expectations that come with the program to begin with and having already won titles as an assistant coach which just makes the bullseye bigger. But Desko knew pressure. And he thrived. Remember, this is a lifelong Central New Yorker who goes back decades in the game and played his high school lacrosse at West Genesee, for the longest time the Syracuse of lacrosse at that level where “state champions” was printed so many times on banners they ran out of ink. He then played lacrosse at Syracuse, fully knowing the pressure bubble having grown-up in the area. He started out at midfield, switched to defense, earned All-America honors and led the team to the program’s first ever NCAA berth with a 10-5 mark. Pressure? No problem for the eventual National Lacrosse Hall of Famer (2020). What followed after Desko took the head job is perhaps an unmatched coaching resume in the history of the sport. 258-86, good for a .750 winning percentage. 5 NCAA titles. 9 Final Four appearances and 7 NCAA Finals appearances in his first 11 years as head coach. 2010-2013 also provided 4 Big East Championships in a row. Desko has been on the hot seat as the passionate fan base has grown restless without a title in oh so long. He handled it with class and grace and humility and patience. Gary Gait is the Michael Jordan of lacrosse. He connects generations and lacrosse families and everywhere he has gone, he has won. He will no doubt have Syracuse men’s lacrosse rolling very soon with an eye on the big prize. He will build a monster coaching staff (the legendary Dave Pietramala has already been added as defensive coordinator as of this writing) and grab recruits quickly (Pietramala’s twin sons, Dom and Nick, verbally committed to North Carolina last fall and just completed their junior years at Boys’ Latin, but could they switch to the Orange, one of the four finalists for Dom during the recruiting process?). But while we buckle-up for the future and get excited for the Gary Gait Era, take a minute and appreciate the glory and success and winning and titles and respect for the game and people the head coach before Gait gave us. Thank you, John Desko.

more? Try making the transition from the Big East to the ACC. That schedule is brutal every week. All Desko did early in the transition was win 2 ACC Tournaments in 2015 and 2016. 2018 was a conference regular season title for the Orange. Desko has won 4 ACC Coach of the Year awards, in fact all of them in a row from 2015-18. One final number. How is 34-15 in tournament play? Desko also goes beyond CNY. He is well-respected in the sport by everyone, in the United States and globally. At one point, he was the head coach of Team USA, and led the squad to a silver medal in the 2006 World Lacrosse Championship. Talk about legacy. Talk about impact. Talk about growing the game in the United States of America and internationally. You know who else has 5 NCAA titles in another sport? Mike Krzyzewski, who says this coming year is his last as Duke head men’s basketball coach. All he gets is praise for winning that many championships in about four decades of coaching. He has adapted to the times and the game and the one-and-done and the transfer rules changing and on and on it goes. Is the praise deserved? Absolutely. But look at John Desko. He did the exact same thing as head coach of Orange men’s lacrosse and won the same amount of titles in half the amount of years. Oh, and 6 NCAA crowns as an assistant, a position where he was a major part of the program each and every year. Above all this, John Desko is one of the nicest people I have ever covered in sports. He is always respectful, answers every question and appreciates what the sport has given him 4 Big East Championships in a row as well. For the last several years,

“Opening in 1934, Eddie’s, with their tradition of family hospitality, has truly stood the test of time.”

Eddie’s Summer is here, restrictions are dropped, and it’s time to celebrate! The best way to live your best life this summer is to make sure you take a trip to Eddie’s in Sylvan Beach! Opening in 1934, Eddie’s, with their tradition of family hospitality, has truly stood the test of time. What is Eddie’s recipe for success? The answer is simple, take one part idyllic location, one part dedication, and one part amazing food, mix together and serve with a smile! Eddie’s is located on the Eastern shores of beautiful Oneida Lake right in Sylvan Beach. The restaurant is just a short scenic drive along the lake from Syracuse. Eddie’s restaurant is located at 901 Main Street, Sylvan Beach and they are open for dine in and take out seven days a week Sunday through Thursday from noon to 8:30 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from noon to 9 p.m. For takeout orders and reservations give them a call at 315-762-4269. Generations of Central New Yorkers would agree that it’s just not summer without a trip to Eddie’s Restaurant in Sylvan Beach. Eddie’s Restaurant started with a hot dog stand and a dream as the country was finding its way out of the Great Depression. Since its inception, Eddie’s Restaurant has been continuously run by the Stewart Family through good times and bad, including successfully navigating a global pandemic! Eddie’s has also been visited by celebrities over the last nearly century including Frank Sinatra, Louis Prima, The Ink Spots, Liza Minelli and even George Foreman! For nearly a century Eddie’s has been happily serving scrumptious food to everyone from beach bums to celebrities! Whether you are at Eddie’s for breakfast (served all day!), lunch, dinner, or even dessert there is certainly something on the menu for everyone! One of my favorite things about the menu is that it incorporates nostalgic

doing a disservice to you all if I failed to mention the most famous item on Eddie’s menu, and an absolute must order, The Original Hot Ham BBQ sandwich! The legend of the “Original Hot Ham” BBQ Sandwich is that on one busy summer day in 1946, Eddie Sr. the founder of Eddie’s, ran out of hot dogs! As the tourists grew hungry Eddie decided to make a sandwich that he only made for his family, a toasted seeded roll piled high with capicola ham! The tourists fell in love and the famous spicy sandwich was born! Kyle and I were super excited to take Magnolia to her very first trip to Eddie’s on a warm and sunny June evening. It was a Friday night and you could tell that summer was finally here! We were happy that we had a reservation because there was a bit of a line to get seated. We were quickly seated at our cozy booth and eagerly looked over the menu while our amazing server Amber told us about the specials. Amber was not only super friendly but also very knowledgeable and happy to make recommendations and answer any question. For starters we first decided on the Zip Zap Shrimp, a generous serving of beer battered shrimp tossed in a spicy, creamy sauce and served on a bed of spring mix. This dish was the perfect amount of spicy and totally mouthwatering! We also decided to try a newer menu item (which is a combination of longtime favorites), Meatballs With Ricotta Cheese, this sharable dish is made up of three of Eddie’s Famous hand rolled Meatballs served on ricotta cheese and smothered with their Famous Meat Sauce and topped with fresh basil! Each bite of this dish was absolute perfection on a fork! Magnolia, a meatball connoisseur at only 10 months old totally approved of these scrumptious meatballs! While we waited for our entrees I enjoyed a super fresh salad topped with crumbly bleu while Kyle had a cup of the homemade chicken pastina. It’s worth noting that all of Eddie’s soups are made fresh in-house daily and the salads use

locally grown ingredients whenever available. Eddie’s is also known for serving some of the freshest fish this side of the ocean so that fact in combination with the summer vibe made us both decide on the seafood dinners. Upon Amber’s recommendation, I decided on the Broiled Seafood Platter with garlic and butter which is a generous helping of baked fish, large sautéed scallops and tasty shrimp scampi! For an entrée Kyle decided on the Delmonico Steak, a perfectly cooked 16 oz. cut of all natural certified beef, center cut ribeye. This dish was cooked exactly how Kyle likes it and he delighted in every single bite! We both had an order of garlic fries as our side dish and these were a garlic lover’s dream! As I mentioned before no meal at Eddie’s is complete without a slice of heaven, and by that I mean Banana Cream Pie! I ordered the Banana Cream Pie Broiled Seafood Platter but ended up taking it to go when Kyle’s dessert came to the table! Kyle again took Amber’s suggestion and ordered the Peanut Butter Passion Specialty Grande Sundae. This dessert was LOADED with toppings and is an absolute dream for any peanut butter lover. The best part is that there was plenty for all of us to share! Also, they have a new Delmonico Steak soft serve ice cream machine with tons of new flavors! The milkshakes are also amazing. Whatever you do, don’t skip dessert! After a long year and a cold winter it is time to enjoy this beautiful summer, and I can’t think of a better way than a meal at Eddie’s! My Mind To Yours

by debra Merryweather

Seats at the Table Recently, I enjoyed dinner at a west side restaurant with a dining group. One young man wore an enneagram pendant about which I wanted to ask but didn’t. Another diner commented on my regional pronunciation of the word roof while, at my end of the table, another young woman identified herself as a kindergarten teacher which prompted a diner, from my generation, to say that she’d started school in the first grade and always felt she missed something. I spoke up about my having started kindergarten when I was four and my walking alone the half mile to my school. The kindergarten teacher expressed surprise so I explained that, back then, my school enrolled children who would reach the age of five by November and we didn’t have school buses. The woman who missed kindergarten interjected that the streets weren’t always safe for

“Our bodies and minds are one. We should know how we function. Many of us don’t.”

children. I agreed. The kindergarten teacher said we’d provided perspective. Demographically diverse social gatherings do provide opportunities to share different perspectives. Today I believe I was too young to start kindergarten. I’d been told back then that I’d have to catch up to my older classmates, some of whom had older siblings to help them. I started off struggling to tie my shoes in a parochial school culture where, just over a The Enneagram year later, I and my fellow first graders, most of whom had reached the Church’s official age of moral reason: seven, made our First Confessions and our First Communions. I was six. The student in me still wants a gold star for geography so, back home after dinner, I utilized Google Earth to measure the distance between my childhood home and my school: 4/10 of a mile; one half mile would take me into I690, a highway which didn’t exist when I measured my travels in city blocks while I, myself, was being measured with letter grades and competitive standardized test percentiles that probably didn’t reflect age or other individual differences, just as, I suspect, Google Earth probably doesn’t

precisely measure distances by topography. Back to the dinner: I noticed my fellow diner’s enneagram pendant because I’ve studied “The Enneagram.” Enneagram derives from the Greek term for nine and refers to a system involving nine personality types and Wuhan Institute of Virology their associated vices, virtues, weaknesses, and strengths. I heard about “The Enneagram” in the 1980’s from a man I met in a 12 Step codependency support group. Discussing outside topics was forbidden in support group meetings so, after meetings, often over dinner, some of us shared our personal self-help reading and experiences. I was, as of then, still unaware that a traumatic Lime Disease bacteria brain injury from childhood had drastically altered my memory and potential. Not remembering one’s lived experience is like trying to manage a corporation whose hierarchy develops strategies over dinner in clubs you’re not allowed to join. Things are getting better.

“In our interconnected living ecosystem defined by space and time, experts have conducted experiments with neither the test subjects’ nor the people’s informed consent. I suppose there have been unpublicized glitches.”

My new golf sandals have easily adjustable Velcro straps. We can go out for group dining adventures. I’ve gotten the COVID vaccine. I’ve worn masks and haven’t gotten any colds. And I believe it’s possible that the SarsCov-2 virus may have both been developed in and escaped from a testing lab in Wuhan, China because I have read about how Lyme Disease was first discovered and named in Lyme, Connecticut which is just across the water from the US government’s Animal Disease Center on Plum Island, NY. I’ve seen Lyme Disease concentration maps. In our interconnected living ecosystem defined by space and time, experts have conducted experiments with neither the test subjects’ nor the people’s informed consent. I suppose there have been unpublicized glitches. PBS’s June 15 episode of “American Experience: The Polio Crusade” describes how one bad batch of vaccine gave people polio. Polio was much discussed during my early childhood and “The Polio Crusade” provides context about how vaccines are developed. Dr. Albert Sabin, who developed the oral vaccine, disagreed with Dr. Jonas Salk about

how quickly to roll out testing of Salk’s dead virus inoculation. Dr. Salk first tested his vaccine on monkeys; then, in 1952, he tested the vaccine on 43 children in the D.T. Watson Home for Crippled Children. Later, Salk acquired test subjects from orphanages, and, from homes for the “feeble-minded.” When those results were in, Dr. Salk inoculated himself and his family. When I attended grade school, angry, frustrated, or mean teachers often spit the words “feebleminded,” “moron,” and “idiot” at Dr. Salk testing the polio vaccine in 1952 children who might be fidgety, dyslexic, timid, inattentive, or tired, and, of course, this is not to suggest that there is some category of disability that renders anyone suitable for experimentation without their fully informed consent. I understand why not everyone wants the COVID vaccine. My reading suggests medical and scientific experimentation has long been carried out on demographically diverse groups of soldiers, students, and institutionalized persons who believed they were assisting in some supposed common good. We might all benefit from reading medical history, popular science publications, and literature describing human physiology. Our bodies and minds are one. We should know how we function. Many of us don’t. I really enjoyed the group dinner; the food was great; and different people shared lots of interesting personal perspectives. The event felt normal. Normal is a relative term so I hope the new normal will be normally healthy and friendly. Happy Independence Day!

Word on the Street by Bill McClellan

Filibuster/Democracy The opportunity to repair democracy itself, voting rights, civil rights, gay rights, the right to choose, favor for favor, infrastructure, American integrity and much more are all on the line. This is why: To begin, Mitch McConnell and this Republican mess will give you nothing. To get around them the filibuster must go. And it is 100% the right thing to do. The filibuster has a disgusting racist history. Today, the filibuster serves as the single blockage to repairing long deteriorating democracy. And time is short and fleeting. The first filibuster occurred in 1837 for the purpose of having an avenue to sidestep the founders. (changing a 50–50 vote to a 60–40 vote when deemed convenient.) It quickly became a major tool in the Jim Crown era, used by southern senators who sought to block civil rights legislation including successfully blocking anti-lynching laws. It wasn’t until 1964 that the Senate finally overcame a filibuster to pass a major civil rights bill. The filibuster was created by mistake and has rarely been used for good. Its only mission is to circumvent democratic process. It really needs to go. Arguments against this are “garbage” supported by those whose campaigns benefit from laws such as voting rights that will be protected if fairness prevailed. I don’t expect

you to simply take this for granted. Please refer to: A short history of the filibuster: Rarely a tool for good https://www.salon.com › ... › Matthew Rozsa’s Articles You will find that the filibuster was the first anti-American step away from our constitution and it prevailed because of racism and the very limited integrity of the senate. It needs to go. Restore honest democracy. Then govern well. If you lose the next election, go to the people for support. Let them decide. If Democrats use their heads which remarkably few do, and research the mostly likely path of legislation without a filibuster, they will find out they will be far ahead in any scenario. Just look at history. It has all the proof. Yet lies worthless if decision makers don’t care enough to learn and research and want the American way.

This is an example of the acceptance of McConnell’s level of disdain for any measure in his way. It clearly shows the democratic weakness that allowed McCain/ Feingold to die as a lead catalyst to remove money from politics. This is a brief example of why evil is winning in America. Mitch McConnell threatened a scorched earth Republican Senate if Democrats ended the filibuster. In his words Mitch McConnell “Republicans would use every rule and option at their disposal to halt the chamber, making the Senate like a 100-car pileup, nothing moving. Of course, he neglected to say that what he means is the Senate would be exactly what it is already. He is a 100% scorched earth leader. Now, four words Dems need to learn from are: “And-He-Does-It.” If Chuck Schumer used McConnell’s playbook McConnell’s threats would be useless. One year before the end of Obama’s term Justice Scalia passed away. Mitch McConnel said: “this vacancy should not be filled by this lame duck President – The American people should have a voice in this process” (in the election a year down the road) A year later we got Justice Gorsuch. McConnell won. Fast forward two years: Justice Ginsburg passes away and Trump selects Justice Barrett to be appointed to the bench. Just a few months before the election. McConnell refused to wait less than two months to the election. Just “hours” after Justice Ginsburg passed away McConnell (with cruel timing so typical of his element) said “President Trump’s nominee to replace her will receive a vote on the floor of the United States Senate.” This blatant lie and contradiction makes the Senate’s lack of integrity glare. This simply reflects with great clarity that McConnell is a scorched earth leader at all times. The double standard was blinding. And even further re-enforced the Supreme Court for him. The American people whose voice was removed from who serves on the Court and due process be dammed. There was a crucial time that took place and was wasted under Obama. It exists again, now, again, for Democrats. It is a brief window when power is yours before the midterms likely will take it away. If you don’t exercise it, this advantage may not be yours again for a long time. The people’s voice, the Supreme Court, trillions to the country’s wealthiest, no infrastructure, cruel immigration policy, failing Democracy and nothing but token appeasement for the people will become only starters for a Republican party willing to violate any rule to serve their corrupt self-serving agenda. Mitch McConnell is

a hypocrite of the highest order and a grave tragic opponent of American design. That being a noble design that lost sight of its founding. To listen to this man and refrain from the filibuster and passing all legislation quickly, exercising the nuclear option and virtually every option may again be the great folly. You do not give evil comfort as it tortures your soul. You must be braver and bolder than evil to beat it. If they win and are smart, they will remove the filibuster while they are in power. Then they can freely finish the job of destroying voting fairness and what is left of America. We lost the entire Supreme Court due to this folly. We will lose everything, including the will of our Founders if we do not correct our course. The best of us did not perpetuate the filibuster. Lowness, immorality, and racists did. The founders did not design a 60/40 Chuck Schmer Senate, racists did.

“Republicans would use every rule and option at their disposal to halt the chamber, making the Senate like a 100-car pileup, nothing moving.”

or sentiment of which we’re no longer proud? Columbus comes to mind: do we remember the man who bravely navigated towards what he thought would be China and India to create a sea route to those profitable trade centers (there was certainly no thought of going to war with either well-armed kingdom), and successfully landed in the New World, opening it to settlement (and conquest)? Or do we see him as Zinn portrays him, a cruel, barbarous rapist and murderer, bent upon stealing gold and destroying an innocent but sophisticated culture of kindly indigenous people? Grabar argues that Zinn glosses over, or never mentions, the less savory aspects of the many native cultures (which differed considerably from north to south, east to west – Columbus himself being ignorant of the vast expanse of North America and the many different people living there), and portrays those living here as a sort of ideal: communal, at one with nature, woman-powered, and friendly to a fault. While acknowledging their power, he doesn’t dwell on the bloodier aspects of Aztec culture, or spend a lot of time on inter-tribal warfare, slave-taking, or brutality. Where slavery is concerned, Zinn is convinced that slavery was an accepted part of America’s founding – that it was not just an accident of timing, but that America set out to be a slave-driven economy in a way unique in all of history. Grabar argues that slavery pre-existed the “discovery” of the Americas, and that complicit in it were not only the Arab slavers (who also captured slaves up and down the coasts of Europe and the British Isles, and well into the Caucasus) but the African tribes themselves, who either took slaves as prizes of war, or captured them for trade. This argument has been much discussed with the launch of the “1619 Project” and its advance into school curricula – what might have happened had the ancient institution of slavery not reached the shores of North America? Are you feeling angry yet? I was more confused than angry, both when I read Zinn’s book, and reading Grabar’s. And the reason is what ended up making me feel a measure of frustrated, if not angry: how do I know where the truth is? The sections in which Grabar deals with especially

World War II (in which Zinn fought, and dropped bombs – making him feel, no doubt, a heavy burden of guilt when he discovered that some of his missions may very well have killed civilians) were particularly difficult reading, as this war has always seemed to me to have many unanswered questions. The same holds true for Capitalism vs. Socialism – these days the terms are difficult to define without immediately descending into a disagreement about which is a “better” system for human growth and happiness, and that neither system has lived is its “true embodiment.” There are huge questions occupying more and more of American discourse these days: what do we teach kids about history? How can you talk to a seven year old about checking sources and consulting multiple original documents when the kid is really more interested in bikes, super heroes, and what kind of yucky food people ate 500 years ago? Are heroes (other than super) even appropriate to childhood – should they be eliminated from our culture completely, as, after all, even the best of them were just people, warts and all (as Cromwell, no saint he, is reported to have told his portraitist to depict him)? Certainly, by the time a young person has reached high school, history can be shared with a more “warts and all” approach, reminding the student all the while what was common at the time as a way of evaluating actions at the time. And, no doubt, that’s the lesson of reading both “A People’s History” and “Debunking.” Very likely neither scholar has it absolutely right, nor definitely wrong – but exposing our thinking to both sets of ideas is the best we can do when addressing events of the past. We weren’t there, Charlie. So we read history widely, and with “healthy skepticism.”

you increase the work load (the reps, weight and less time between sets), you increase the intensity. It’s as simple as that. In regards to aerobic exercise (I’ll use running as an example), sprinting on a treadmill is obviously far more intense than jogging. Doing as much as possible, as close to the maximum exertion you can put out, is intense.

Exercise & Fitness by Jennifer Nastasi Guzelak

More Exercise Isn’t Always Better It’s probably not news to you that Americans just don’t exercise enough. In fact, less than half of us meet the recommended amount of weekly physical activity. Did you know that in some cases exercise can be just as effective as drugs to treat chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, arthritis and much more? So why don’t we prescribe exercise in specific doses, like we would a drug? In order to do that, we need to know exactly how much activity produces how much benefit, whether there’s an upper limit, and at which point the helpful effects either start waning or begin to do more harm than good.

What Does Intensity Truly Mean?

In most cases, intensity can be described as one’s perceived effort, but when it comes to lifting weights in the gym, intensity refers to the amount of weight lifted. When

Why Does Intensity Matter?

Intensity matters because oxygen consumption correlates directly to calories burned. When exercise is introduced into the mix, we consume more oxygen and therefore burn more calories. Are you more out of breath after walking or sprinting? After lifting a fivepound weight or lifting a twenty-five-pound weight? The harder you push yourself, the more oxygen you require and the more calories you will burn.

“The harder you push yourself, the more oxygen you require and the more calories you will burn.”

Short Bursts of Exercise Are Better Than Exercising Non-stop

This should be good news for those of you who think there isn’t enough time in your day to start an exercise program. Believe it or not, exercise, like any other prescription, could be dangerous in excessive amounts. Studies have shown that individuals who have had a heart attack and ran more than thirty miles a week or spent more than six hours engaging in vigorous activity weekly were at an increased risk by up to twofold of dying from a cardiac event.

In contrast, heart-attack survivors who exercised moderately (which is to say more than the admittedly low recommended minimum) lowered their risk of heart-related death by sixty-three percent compared to those exercising the least. So, it’s safe to say that if exercise could have a positive impact on those with a history of heart disease the general population would benefit as well. The data collected through various studies could form the foundation for a prescription-based approach to exercise, as researchers become more familiar with how much

exercise can influence factors that affect our health.

Is More Really Better?

It’s Time to Change

So, if you work out harder in the gym will you get quicker results? Is working out for three hours better than just one? Many of us want to take the easiest road to our destination, don’t we? We want to put in the least amount of effort and have that show stopping physique. However, working out longer or harder won’t necessarily get you results faster!

Spending hours going through the motions of simply being at the gym without truly putting in the effort definitely won’t put you on the fast track to success, especially when you’re not making any progress. To many, ignorance is bliss. If your workouts haven’t produced any real results for weeks, months or years, why would you think they are going to start working now? To get the best results, you should change up parts of your workout every three to four weeks depending on your experience level and the time of year. Remember to master your form for several weeks first and then change up the loading scheme more frequently. By mixing up your activities, you give those overused muscles, joints, and ligaments a chance to rest and recover before putting them into action again. If you do get injured, performing a different activity that doesn’t strain the same part of the body will allow you to stay in shape and heal at the same time.

Effort Makes a Difference

Your workout is only as good as the effort you put into it and hard work comes in all levels of fitness. Hard work for you may be easy for me and much of it depends on the fuel you have in the tank, and the physical shape you are in. Try not to pay too much attention to what everyone else is doing at the gym. Instead, focus on you and your goals! Everything else is less important.

Keep a Workout Journal

Have a plan before you hit the gym. Don’t hum and haw about what you’re going to do when you get there. Use a fitness app or keep a workout journal with you while you work out so you can write down everything you do (sets, reps and exercises). Keeping track of your workouts will allow you to use your time in the gym most efficiently.

Eliminate Distractions

Distractions will only slow you down! Leave magazines, cell phones, and friends (that are counterproductive to your workout) at home. Wear your headphones to help keep you focused and let other gym patrons know you mean business while you are there.

It’s All About Mindset

In order to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle, we must constantly remind ourselves of the ‘why’ because it is the force that drives us. I understand that not everyone likes working out. I get it. However, if you keep a positive mindset, you will have a better chance at getting the most

TABLE HOPPING

out of your workouts. The good news is that going to the gym will only get easier as you develop fitness habits. From there on out, it’s much easier to stick to a routine.

The Bottom Line

It’s the “more is better” mentality that has been branded in the back of our minds as a result of decades of misinformation being fed to us by various publications. More is better only up to a point! The secret to living an active life is making fitness a habit. You don’t have to spend hours in the gym working out to see results. More isn’t always better and the consequences of skipping a workout are much greater than the effort that it takes to show up and turn your life around. Good luck to you. I have been a personal trainer for over eighteen years and I absolutely love what I do. I honestly feel that I have one of the best jobs out there! The most rewarding part of my profession is helping one of my clients succeed at reaching their personal fitness goals. Making a difference in someone’s life makes it all worthwhile. Luca In the Oscar winning SOUL, Pixar proved, yet again, why they are one of the premiere studios working in film today. The profoundly introspective, thoughtful tale was a beautiful and hilarious take on what it means to be alive. It illustrated that even though we are talking about an animated production, it can

still resonate as deeply as any of its live-action counterparts. A further testament to the studio’s greatness can be found in their whimsical followup, LUCA. The story, set amongst the depths of the sea and the shores of a colorful Italian town, does not boast the same philosophical conundrums as SOUL, but instead tells a sweet, lovable tale about friendship and acceptance. Luca (Jacob Tremblay) is a young sea monster who spends his days corralling fish. His existence is defined by safety measures, with his parents (Maya Rudolph and Jim

Before this can happen, Luca and Alberto flee to the local town of Portorosso where they hope to secure a vespa and travel the world together. Once they arrive on land, not only do they discover that things like rain will be an issue (they begin to turn back into monsters once their skin gets wet) but they will need money to procure their beloved bike. They soon befriend a young girl named Guliana (Emma Berman) who invites them to join her on a team to compete in a triathlon that boasts a cash prize, and a pathway to their worldly adventure. LUCA feels like a throwback in many ways, taking a more simplistic and traditional approach to storytelling. It is colorful, funny, and charming, crafting characters that certainly don’t pack the same emotional punch as many of Pixars classics, but are endearing none-the-less. There is a snarky, loathsome villain, a narcissistic and creepy racer named Ercole Visconti (Saverio Raimondo) but his inclusion is more about providing minor conflict than anything else. The film is more of a celebration of friendship, love, and culture which, quite honestly, felt surprisingly refreshing. It’s not often in the modern cinematic world to have an animated tale told that isn’t

Computers & the Web by Nancy Roberts

LOL Do you remember the days before the Internet got so angry? Me, too. In honesty, of course, there were “flame wars” early on, and before the Internet was really a “thing,” when people chatted on bulletin boards and would get into angry discussions – though granted, most of them were about coding and geeky stuff. But early on, the Internet could be fun and funny, and people spent embarrassing amounts of time sharing videos and jokes and silly things – some of them funny only because they were so idiotic. Take “I can haz cheezeburger.” A website featuring video and images, it was created in 2007 by Eric Nakagawa and Kari Unebasami, cats (and other animals) were shown with silly expressions, the iconic image being a cat looking very pleadingly and saying, “I can haz cheezburger?” The website got about 1.5 million (yes, million) hits per day at its peak in 2007. The Cheezburger cats were actually preceded by LOLcats, cats speaking in “catspeak” and featuring cats with strange expressions saying silly things. LOL, of course, was “laugh out loud,” except in the case of one friend who thought it meant “lots of love,” and almost sent it to a friend as a gesture of sympathy before he was corrected. In 2005, Charlie the Unicorn was one of my favorites, which I never tired of watching, as he was invited to Candy Mountain by two friends with peculiar voices. The “animation” was rendered in a very primitive and funny fashion, and it was forwarded around offices, always leaving its trail because the latest person to get it was LOLing conspicuously. About this same time there was a series of, er, infomercials, featuring Tom Dickson, founder of the Blendtec line of blenders. In each one, he asked, and answered the immortal question, “Will it blend?” and proceeded to throw any number of things into his blender, from a half a cooked The Carlson family in a JibJab chicken, bones and all, to a frightening concoction of salsa, tortilla chips, Buffalo wings and some beer, to the worst of all: an iPhone. JibJab was (and is) a clever little app that inserted your face on a cartoon, allowing you (or a friend you wanted to tease and/or humiliate) to sing a song, dance, send an animated greeting card, or any number of other silly things. It was founded in 1999 by Evan and Gregg Spiridellis, and hit its early home run with George Bush and John Kerry singing “This Land is Your Land” in 2004, when they were presidential candidate rivals. The app, ReFace, has gone them one better, and takes video clips from famous movies or other highly identifiable video, and doesn’t replace the star’s face so much as blend the star’s face with yours – so you can say, “I’ll be bahk,” or become Jim Morrison, or The Penguin – to hilarious results.

TABLE HOPPING

Around Christmas time, a clever marketer for UK department store, John Lewis, created ads that were so full of the holiday spirit that they became eagerly anticipated – and now other franchises are trying to do the same. (Irn Bru, a Scottish drink, has done one of the best with its flying snowman who “nicks” a child’s Irn Bru...) Then there were the “challenges.” It was initially kind of a cute idea, in which a “challenge” was issued, and people recorded themselves accomplishing whatever the task was – eat a spoonful of cinnamon without any liquid, drop a bucket of ice water over your head, and which quickly hit its nadir with the “Tide Pod Challenge,” which encouraged silly young people to eat, yes, consume, a Tide detergent pod. 1998’s Hamster Dance showed just how funny something very simple can be – just a page full of cartoon hamsters dancing. Really. Cats and cucumber videos; Parkour videos; dog shaming posts; and of course the infamous Darwin Awards, which have reached new heights thanks to our phones being able to record people doing really, really, really silly and/or dangerous things. And not only are these just a few (happy) memories, but there’s something new and amusing that starts up every day. Look for the fun – it lowers your blood pressure!

Tales from the Vine

by plr articles by Cassandra Harrington

Why Should You Join A Wine Club? Not sure what wines to buy? Always buy the same thing? Looking for a regular supply of wines direct to your door? If the answer is yes to any of the above, then you should consider joining a wine club. Wine clubs have become increasingly popular in recent years and offer a number of benefits when it comes to buying wine. The main advantage of joining a wine club is that you get to enjoy a regular supply (monthly or quarterly depending on the wine club) of expertly selected wines. Unlike a supermarket or wine shop when you are faced with rows and rows of wines and unsure what to buy, with a wine club all the research is done for you. You get to taste a whole host of award winning wines, customer favorites, pre-releases and undiscovered gems that you otherwise may not have chosen. What’s more, you’ll be sure to have a bottle of wine on hand, perfect for every occasion. Another advantage of joining a wine club is that you will receive detailed information about each of the wines. This can help when it comes to picking out wines in the future (particularly if you are new to wine), as you get to learn more about what you are drinking and the winemakers who produce the wines. Some wine clubs encourage you

to rate or comment on the wine. This can be useful as you get to remember your favorites and you also get to see what other customers think of the wines before you taste them. Joining a wine club is one of the easiest ways of buying wine. As you sit back and enjoy your wines, you can rest assured that the hard work is being done to prepare your next wine club case for you. And with delivery direct to door, you don’t have to lift a finger. Some wine clubs offer an incentive to encourage you to join, such as a price reduction or free gift. Once you’ve joined, you’ll also probably benefit from other savings such as discounted cases or exclusive promotions. Some online wine clubs go the extra mile and offer a money back guarantee, so if you find that you don’t like a wine that has been selected for you, you can get your money back.

In addition, as a member of a wine club, you may receive invitations to tasting sessions or events. These can be a great way of meeting other people interested in wine, chatting to the experts who select your wines and trying new ranges. Finally, with many wine clubs to choose from, it’s worth picking one that offers you freedom and flexibility. So if you decide that you want to skip a case or modify the selection where you don’t like a wine, this shouldn’t be a problem. A wine club is a great option if you are looking to learn more about wine and they are a really convenient way of keeping stocked up with wine. Wine clubs do vary from one to another, so it’s best to check the details and terms first to ensure that you choose the best one for you.

Infinite As Paramount Plus (formally known as CBS All Access) attempts to establish itself as one of the premiere streaming options available today, they have begun to release blockbuster films that hope to propel them to the same stature as HBO Max, Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. The first marquee adventure in their repertoire is the Mark Wahlberg vehicle INFINITE. Wahlberg’s SPENSER CONFIDENTIAL was released on Netflix in March of last year and was deemed to be a streaming success, so there was every reason to believe that magic would strike for Paramount Plus as well. For the most part, even when the action star’s films don’t exactly rank highly on the artistic scale, they are at least engaging and entertaining. In INFINITE, Wahlberg plays the tortured Evan McCauley. Despite his mysterious ability to forge swords utilizing techniques last employed centuries ago, and boasting a seemingly unbeatable trivia skillset, his life isn’t exactly easy. Forced to take antipsychotic meds to keep his impulses and troubled mind at bay, he admirably sticks up for damsels in distress, but also has a penchant for self-harm and violence.

Tony Petote

After a squabble with a local drug dealer, he is taken into police custody. The questioning from a bald and super-intense fella name Bathurst (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is pretty straight forward at first, but then escalates quickly. As Bathurst forces Evan to play a version of Russian roulette while questioning him about ancient artifacts, it becomes painfully aparant that this is no typical detective, and something much more nefarious is afoot. Luckily, before things get really out of hand, a mysterious woman (Sophie Cookson) crashes a car through the wall of the police station and basically gives Evan the “come with me if you want to live” TERMINATOR treatment. An absurd chase sequence predictably unfolds, overstuffed with bullet-time slo-mo shots and bloodless violence galore. Evan narrowly avoids catastrophe, and in doing so, is promptly told that he’s not schizophrenic as he feared, but instead, an immortal known as an Infinite. He is constantly reborn into a new life, and is permanently engaged in a battle of good vs. evil with another group of immortals. These villains are lead by Bathurst who is tired of living forever, and who has the lofty goal of Mark Wahlberg plays Evan McCauley annihilating every living thing on the planet. It’s been a few days since I originally watched INFINITE, and while this has given me plenty of time to reflect, and maybe discover some sort of silver lining, it certainly hasn’t happened yet. It’s a PG-13 movie that really wanted to be rated-R, and always yearned to be far more clever than it could ever be. Wahlberg’s casual playfulness, which I usually find endearing and enjoyable, never rang true in the guise of Evan. More confounding, was the fact that his character was neither magnetic nor sympathetic. His backstory was so scattershot that it was impossible to care about his future. Obviously, when a character has lived for centuries, there’s a lot of ground to cover, but it’s still vital for an audience to care. I genuinely never cared. Chiwetel Ejiofor as Bathurst He was just sort of...there. Without question Bathurst proved to be a far more interesting character. Though I never truly bought into his yearning for extinction, I did get a kick out of watching Ejifor play with him with such over-the-top gusto. He obviously went all in, gleefully embracing the B-grade absurdity of the production. As a result, whether he was poisoning Toby Jones with honey, or trying to chase Wahlberg down in an armored truck, he certainly never mailed it in. Whether he was bound to succeed or fail in his attempt at mass extermination feels largely inconsequential. Like a little league baseball game, in this venture, it was much more about the effort that exuded and the fun being had. In this regard, Ejifor was certainly the MVP. I’m sure there was hope that this production would serve as the first of many installments in the INFINITE saga. The film has the wistful aspirations of “prospective franchise” written all over it, yet lacks execution needed to allow this goal to come to fruition. With lackluster action sequences, surprisingly shoddy special effects and characters so forgettable that they hardly exist, this was certainly not the auspicious cinematic breakthrough that Paramount Plus was hoping for.

“A movie that always yearned to be far more clever than it could ever be.”
