Blessed be the Beer July 18th is St. Arnoldus Day. “Who’s that guy? and Why are we celebrating him?” you might be asking, and for good reason. Read onwards for a little bit of knowledge, history, and another excuse for us to raise our beer mugs in tribute. Saint Arnoldus (also known as Arnold of Soissons, or Arnulf of Oudenburg) is the
Catholic patron saint of Belgian brewers and hop-pickers. Born in 1040 and dying in 1087, Saint Arnoldus, patron saint of Belgian brewers he was a soldier under the ranks of Henry I of France, who came to reside within the Benedictine St. Medard’s Abbey in Soissons, France, eventually rising in the ranks to become abbot (the head) of the monastery. Legend has it, (or his Catholic legend, known as hagiography), he attempted to refuse the title of being abbot and fled the monastery, only being forced by a wolf to return. It was there that he became a priest and then Bishop of Soissons, and in 1080 left St. Medard’s and founded the Abbey of St. Peter in Oudenburg, which is located in now present-day Belgium. While at Oudenburg, Arnold developed a passion for brewing beer. Beer was a staple in medieval times, many times, being a better option than water to drink for sanitary reasons. We know today that because water is boiled to create beer, it kills harmful pathogens, but people did not understand the science behind boiling during Arnold’s time on earth. Arnold was a vocal advocate, encouraging people to drink beer for its “gift of health,” stating, “From man’s

sweat and God’s love, beer came into the world.” It is said that during one particular wave of illness (potentially the plague or cholera), Arnold advised his congregation and local people in his town to avoid water altogether, thus the illness disappeared altogether; his advice helping to save many thousands of lives. In some versions of this tale, he also plunges his crucifix into a brew kettle as well. St. Arnoldus was canonized on January 6, 1121 by Pope Callixtus II after a number of miracles were attributed to him, both before – one being that part of the roof in the brewery section of the monastery collapsed and Arnold prayed to God to multiply the stores of beer left, which then occurred by divine intervention – and after death, at his tomb. His relics (bits of bone/hair/teeth usually)

are still contained within the Abbey (Church) of Saint Peter, in Oudenburg. The saint is often depicted holding a mashing rake and clothed in armor and on July 18th, he is honored with a feast and parade in Brussels, Belgium known as the “Day of Beer.” There are several other Catholic saints associated with beer including: • S t. Arnulf of Metz, patron saint of brewers (Yes, another Arnold, with storylines and feast dates – August 14th, often getting mixed!) • St. Augustine of Hippo, patron saint of brewers • S t. Amandus, patron saint of bar staff, bartenders, and beer merchants • St. Hildegardis, female patron saint of hop-growers • S t. Brigid, female patron saint of brewers, a nun who worked with a leper-colony who, as legend states, turned dirty bath water into beer when the lepers implored her to quench their thirst Bet they didn’t teach any of that within your local parish or Sunday School as a kid... Cheers!

How to Stay in Shape this Summer Summer is finally here! Are you as excited as I am? With the season in full-swing we can now take advantage of the beach, barbecues, ice cream stands and our favorite frozen cocktails. No one really wants to workout in a stuffy gym on a beautiful summer day. After all, we have ample opportunity to take our workouts outside! With the right strategy, you can turn the outdoors into your gym and stay fit all summer long. Here are a few tips to help you stay in shape this summer.
Exercise In the Morning
With so much going on this summer, finding the time to workout can be tricky. Set your alarm for an hour earlier and go for a walk, run or head to the gym for an early morning group fitness class. Don’t put it off for later in the day as it will be less likely to happen.
Bring Your Lunch
No matter what time of year it is, packing a healthy lunch is
always a good idea. When you wait until lunchtime to decide what to have, you’ll find yourself making bad decisions. Planning ahead will help prevent you from consuming empty calories.
Create A Balanced Routine
A fantastic way to get started with a summer workout plan is through an instructorled workout video. These videos are typically fifteen to forty-five minutes long and require little to no workout equipment, which makes it easy to get started. Most providers make them available for free, so don’t worry about the cost. You can also run or jog for twenty to thirty minutes every other day. Mix it up with other moderate-intensity exercises such as bicycling, brisk walking and swimming. Add in three to four rounds of bodyweight exercises like squats, burpees, pushups or Russian twists after your cardio session for quicker results. If you don’t have access to a gym, a personal trainer can help you design a strength program using bodyweight exercises, kettlebells and dumbbells that you can do at home.

Barbecue season isn’t just about hot dogs, burgers and ribs. Grilled vegetables are an excellent way to fill up your plate with flavor and provide your body with the nutrients it needs. Toss your favorite veggies in a bit of olive oil and balsamic vinegar, season with a bit
Full-body strengthening workouts and high intensity interval training (HIIT) are two of the best ways to get quick results. This form of workout will build muscle and increase your aerobic capacity, allowing you to achieve fat burning and muscle sculpting all at once. High-intensity interval training alternates periods of intensive activity with periods of moderate exercise or rest. Most trainers recommend doing HIIT three times a week, with a day off in between. Do thirty to sixty seconds of moderate activity and alternate with thirty to sixty seconds of intense activity. Repeat this cycle for a total of twenty to thirty minutes. If you have a treadmill, HIIT is done by doing one minute “all-out” sprints followed by two minutes of walking for a total of fifteen to twenty-five minutes. If you are just starting out, you can do the same interval pattern with intense power walking. Increase the walking speed or the incline slope for the high-intensity portion of the cycle. If you don’t have access to a treadmill, you can try intervals of burpees or high

Another intense workout that can be done in a short period of time, is called circuit training. This is a fast-paced blend of cardio and weights. The most important component of circuit training is the decrease in rest periods. Performance improves as the number of repetitions is increased and the rest period is shortened.

Summer Hits The summer blockbuster season is here, and a trio of established franchises that have already made their way into theaters this past June. TOP GUN: MAVERICK is a sequel that has been nearly four decades in the making. The original has emerged as one of the most beloved action films of all time, one that still gets plenty of play on cable television and streaming services. Fans of Tom Cruise and gratuitous volleyball sequences have been clamoring for a follow-up since 1986 and after numerous delays, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Cruise) is finally flying high once again. When a global threat emerges that threatens our entire way of life, the rebellious Maverick (Cruise) is called back into action. While he is as daring and controversial as ever, the prevailing thought is that he is the only man capable of training a new generation of pilots (Miles Teller, Scott Glenn, Monica Barbaro, Bashir Salahuddin) to take on the seemingly impossible mission. Though he would rather be part of the combat team, he reluctantly

agrees to take on the task, even if it means putting the cadets in mortal danger. He is particularly torn by the inclusion of Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of his former co-pilot and best buddy Goose. Rooster is one heck of a flier, but Maverick is worried that he will suffer the same fate as his dearly departed dad. There are countless reasons why MAVERICK should not have worked, but it thrives on virtually every level. It is the rare movie that is better than the original in every conceivable way, even though I’m sure there will be some who think it is sacrilegious to say so. The performances are spot on, the storyline is more concise and feels as if it might actually be building to something (unlike the original), and it has the same air of playful exuberance that made TOP GUN an indelible delight since ‘86. Most importantly, the action sequences are absolutely stunning. For Tom Cruise, once again plays Maverick most of these moments,

the performers were legitimately in the planes, setting up their own cameras to establish shots that place the audience directly inside the cockpit. The result is a litany of hyperrealistic, pulse-pounding sequences that truly beg to be seen on the big screen. Cruise was emphatic that audiences would be willing to wait until they could see this film in the theaters (as opposed to debuting on a streaming service) and his gamble paid off. As this article goes to print, the worldwide box office take is approaching a billion dollars and shows very little signs of slowing. Speaking of billion-dollar franchises, JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION had the seemingly impossible task of slowing down the TOP GUN juggernaut. On paper, the sixth installment in the JURASSIC PARK catalog couldn’t possibly fail. Billed as the culmination of the gripping saga, it promised the return of original stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern and the incomparable Jeff Goldblum. It was going to pair them alongside Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Isabella Sermon to provide fans with a thrilling conclusion to this epic adventure. Only, this isn’t exactly what happened. The JURASSIC franchise is one that I want to love. The original film is one of the more influential movie-going experiences of my life (I was 11 years old and by the time velociraptors started opening kitchen doors I experienced true cinematic terror for the very first time) and ever since, I have longed for the chance to recapture the magic. Unfortunately, that’s not really how things played out. While I am overly enthusiastic every time an installment opens, the only chapter that has come close to the original was JURASSIC WORLD. This was the breath of fresh air that was needed, but in retrospect, this is likely because it so cleverly played off of Spielberg’s original masterpiece. In DOMINION, dinosaurs are now a part of everyday life. They are setting up nests in skyscrapers, causing backups on the highway, and mucking up construction sites. As humanity navigates this perilous new world, dino DNA

Summer Hits continued from pg 9 becomes even more profitable than it ever has been and this forces Colin Trevorrow’s film to venture off into far too many subplots. This culminates in a storyline about genetically altered locusts that becomes the disappointing focal point of the entire film. It was great seeing the old crew get back together, though the dialogue provided to Neill and Dern is downright cringey at times. To be fair, even in the original they weren’t exactly spouting Shakespeare, but it was never THIS bad. The best

moments and lines are saved for Goldblum, which isn’t surprising, and his performance ends up being more fun to watch than the dinosaurs. That’s great news for Goldblum, but not so great for a film whose title contains the words “JURASSIC WORLD.” One of the other truly confounding things about DOMINION is how under-utilized Pratt became. In films like GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, JURASSIC WORLD, and LEGO MOVIE, he embodied the goofy yet infallible hero that seemed like an everyman, yet could save the world at every turn. This time around, he’s a shell of any of these characters, made all the more perplexing by the fact that he’s supposed to be the same guy from JURASSIC WORLD. Sure, he can outrun raptors on a motorbike and defy death in a towering inferno as a T-Rex tries to ingest him, but the charm that has always been there was simply nonexistent. If anything positive can be taken from this, it is that Howard emerged as the more

believable and emotional hero, stopping at nothing to save her adopted daughter Maisie (Sermon) as an evil corporation attempts to harvest her DNA. Perhaps none of this would have mattered if the action sequences had dazzled in the same as they did in MAVERICK. While there is still an element of wonder when watching some of these fantastic beasts grace the screen, we’ve also gotten to the point where it is difficult to introduce anything new. There were a couple of sequences that thrilled, but there wasn’t anything truly breathtaking. In 1993, the iconic moment when Grant and Sadler see the creatures for the first time was a sequence that had to be seen to be believed. In 2022, when Tom Cruise is putting audience members in the cockpit of fighter jets, you’re going to have to do a whole lot more than deliver a CGI monster chasing a scowling dude on a scooter. Though aimed at a much younger audience yet still hoping to emerge as one of the summer’s biggest films, is LIGHTYEAR. Before its release, many wondered how the movie would be connected to the TOY STORY universe, particularly with Chris Evans replacing Tim Allen as the voice of the titular hero. This mystery is solved in the opening seconds, when the audience is informed that “In 1995, Andy got a toy from his favorite movie. This is that movie.” Stuffed with roughly a kajillion subtle and not-so-subtle TOY STORY references, and boasting Pixar’s typically endearing brand of storytelling, LIGHTYEAR may not rise to the level of the series that inspired it, but it is certainly a fun time at the movies. After being marooned on a dangerous planet, Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear, who blames himself for the catastrophic events that resulted in their precarious predicament, strives to get his crew back home. Unfortunately, in order to do so, he must prove that they possess the ability to achieve hyper-speed in order to make it back. There is a lot of trial and error, and to complicate matters, a four-minute trip for him in space ends up being four years in real time on the planet he is leaving. Each time he fails, he comes back to discover that his friends and crew are growing older and moving on. Despite the source material, LIGHTYEAR has more in common with adventures like STAR WARS than it does TOY STORY. You can plainly see where the inspiration and homages were born form, but it still forges its own path. In typical Pixar fashion, the animation is remarkable and there are laughs abound. The majority of these are derived from the fantastic robot companion cat SOX (Peter Sohn) but plenty are reserved for cadet-in-training Mo Morrison (the perfectly cast Taika Waiiti). The action sequences are engaging in a way that many in DOMINION were not, Lightyear has more in common with Star Wars and by the time Zurg (James Brolin) makes his first appearance, audiences will have already decided if they have bought in to the spin-off or not. In its first week in theaters, the box-office numbers for LIGHTYEAR have fallen below expectations, and it seems impossible not to draw a direct correlation between this and the now infamous same-sex kiss that occurs between two characters in the film. The controversy has been immense, with a theater in Oklahoma going so far as to “fast forward” through the moment in their showings. It is worth noting that after the justifiable backlash, they are no longer doing so, but the fact remains that at one point this was a policy they actually implemented. Ironically, as is often the case in overblown freakouts such as these, the kiss is a blink-and-you-will-miss-it moment that many may not have even realized was there if it weren’t for the absurd ruckus that it has caused. It is an absolute travesty that something so innocuous could be the reason that many won’t end up appreciating what is an entertaining animated adventure that would be beloved under any other circumstance. TOP GUN: MAVERICK: A • JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION- C+ • LIGHTYEAR- B+ All films now showing in theaters.

They have their ‘spot,’ and they’ll meet there, just once a year – but because of this event, they’re old friends.” So when you hear that faint rumbling of American cars on the road this summer, heading to the State Fairgrounds in Syracuse – it’s that time again. The Write Stuff by Nancy Roberts
Born to Ride the Morning Star by Dusty Rhoades Heer
It’s a particular joy to me to read and review a book by a local writer – if for no other reason than he or she did it. They wrote that book that, I heard somewhere, everyone has in them. Never mind notorious atheist Christopher Hitchens witticism that in them “is, in most cases, where it should stay.” So far, of the local writers’ books I’ve been privileged to read, not one has failed to entertain, challenge, and involve me. Every one has owed it to their audience to get their book on paper so that we, the readers, could enjoy them. This book is no exception. Among the first things you’ll note embarking on this literary adventure is its free form. The narrative moves, with surprising fluidity, from memories, to poems, to a year-byyear account of life from meeting “Sylvia” to the book’s publication (in 2020), to “Dusty’s Lunchtime Stories,” to laundry lists of bands, concerts and sporting events. While it follows a somewhat chronological storyline, the author will frequently dip into a series of memories, based on an activity or a person, that trace an interest or series of events that, as memories often do, occupy his thoughts – and our attention – for a time before resuming the narrative.
And the odd thing is, as a reader you simply (after a little logical rebellion), go right along with the writer’s style, dropping a thread there and picking up another one there – almost as if examining an intricate piece of embroidery an inch away from its surface, with an occasional pull back to remind you of the overall piece. The book is one part far-reaching travelogue, in that much of each year he

recounts is occupied with the places that year took him to, and he subdivides each year into the months which were framed by a trip or series of trips. The trips are anywhere from a quick hop up to the St. Lawrence River to a more exotic port of call in Hawaii or Florida. In another way, the book is the story of a generation – those children born at the close of World War II, who

lived in a world of freedom, exploration, innocence, and seismic changes. Sometimes I’d stop reading and look up from the pages and wonder, “how did one person manage to do so much in only one lifetime?” and then, “and how did he remember it all? Was it in some kind of journal?” Many of the references, too, are to the music and movies that shaped the Baby Boom generation, and reveal the writer’s attention to the sounds and stories of his generation. Surprisingly, the book is at once sweeping, painted in broad impressionistic strokes, and detailed, as if done with the use of carefully precise pen and ink. A year of work will go by in a sentence, at the same time every road trip, its mileage, weather, stops, meals, chance encounters and unexpected turns are recorded in loving detail, from the sky painted pink at a sunset to what Heer no doubt discovered as he recollected a walk around Green Lake (that it is meromictic) and perhaps did a little research out of what I’d guess is an abundance of natural curiosity. As Heer recites a few stops on a trip, and mentions a sight he’s seen or place he had dinner, I’d find myself thinking, Oh, I forgot! I’ve been there, too! Visits to Montreal, or Cape Cod; to the Adirondacks or Delaware; would get me thinking about the magical trips I’d taken – opening a whole internal dialogue on what my own visit was like, the things I saw, the adventures I had. The book is also, of course, a love story. And while this story might be ultimately called sad, even tragic, it remains hopeful A walk around Green Lakes and a thing of beauty. The object of Heer’s abiding love is Sylvia – the aptly named woman of an almost ethereal beauty and gentle nature who captures the writer’s heart almost at first glance. And from that moment forward, it is “Syl and I...” “Syl said...” “Syl wanted...” “Syl and I, Syl and I, Syl and I...” Dusty and Syl have a once in a million loves, and while I’m tempted to write “that drips off the pages,” it does no such thing. It both is, and is not, the dreamy kind of union or skywritten declaration of a relationship most love stories are about. Yes, there is that magical quality to it. And at the same time, it is fun, bright, interesting, and practical. Two young people meet, fall in love, and spend their time exploring the world together, because, after all, it’s there and they want to see it! And while the story also includes loss and sorrow, it is bouyed up by the kind of character and bravery you’d love to find in your friends – The Adirondacks and, in fact, it is that very quality, the sense of

having a conversation with a friend in which you’re catching up on the things he’s done, the places he’s visited, the unusual and amusing and even amazing things he’s seen and done, that make this book a fascinating journey. And I’ll end with this thought that kept recurring as I breathlessly followed Heer from one adventure to the next: where the heck does that kind of energy come from?

Word on the Street by Bill McClellan
Part I –“The Plan”
Recognition of Purpose Fixing Our City
TO: MY FRIENDS AND OFFICIALS & THE MEDIA PRELUDE: “THE PLAN: enter – word on the street tablehopping.com – this brings you directly to my column – You are reading an updated PART I from December of 2020. Scroll down to January 2021 for PART II and February 2021 for PART III. PART II AND PART III will be reprinted this July and August. Part II and Part III are the essence of the plan. Part I is the story of the girl that caused me to recognize the true evil of the drug trade from the street to the cartel. It has been re-enforced by the death of another that I love from the same scourge. Evil permeates this 15-square block area. I urge you to read this story and multiply it endlessly in our City. Please grasp this human pain. TO: The 53 City Leaders I wrote to last year. (Readers: I furnished them all Part II of “The Plan” and explained where to find the rest) Your mission is to make Syracuse a great City. You have all the tools. Yet, it does not matter if you are vital Social Services or our extraordinarily elite Police Force you are being denied the paths and opportunities to be your best. You are guided to maintain decline rather than achieving and maintaining meaningful success. You have been denied the avenues to make this a great City. “THE PLAN” changes all that. It shows you how to work together as a formidable City fixing team. It is awesome stuff. Today I am asking you to please start thinking about preparations for a new “D-DAY.” Explained in the plan. You are the government. When people speak of American Greatness, it is to you they are speaking. Whatever we are is due to how well you perceive and believe in the intent of the Constitution and our Founders hopes for our today. What I am about to say is not melodramatic. It is you that gives this legitimacy. It is the way you should feel every day and the way I hope you feel as we address the problems
in our City. Please think about the awesome feeling and chills near tears of American Patriotism. Think about the Star-Spangled Banner written from a memory in a great battle, or the Battle Hymn of the Republic, or reading the deeds of a Medal of Honor winner, or thinking of the great sacrifice made by countless young men just blown apart in battle, with their dying last word “Mom.” The price is high for the beauty of freedom. What gives it worth is your work alone. Please read this plan and be prepared to be “His Truth Marching On.” I am very serious. Please invigorate that sense of what America was meant to be. Di Oppresso Libre. To Liberate the Oppressed. The motto of the Special Forces. (Green Berets) Let’s fix our City. I did not fight. Timing saved me. If not for that I would likely be dead. But if you just knew of those incredible warriors, (7th Special Forces and 173d Airborne Brigade) I served with you would know why I write like this. I am writing “American.” I am asking you to embark on an American mission with goals so worthy and striking that those chills of Patriotism will flow, inspiring elite success and unmatched pride as you are not only achieving, but greatness is your force, and the American way is your result. Regular readers are aware that I have devised, and printed in Table Hopping, a plan to “Save our City.” December of 2020 is “Part I” which shows my motivation and the immense human suffering “The Plan” invades and removes. January of 2021 and February of 2021 are “Parts II and Part III of the plan which carefully outline design and explain how to circumvent every relevant concern including financing. What you are reading is “Part I” revised for 2022. It lets you know what the plan is about and provides incentive and esprit de corps which I hope will cause you to “want” to look up the plan and/or read the reprints of “Parts II and III” to follow the next two months. I am not overly self-assured. I just know how to do it. We don’t simply rid the area of heroin. We develop systems to keep it that way. I show you how. After “Shock and Awe” (defined in the plan) it will instantly be known in the drug world that the village is off limits. Immediate arrest and swift efficient prosecution will become the greeting in the village for Drug Dealers. One village at a time and this will take hold. Everyone from Police to Social Services and 50 departments in between must carefully and strategically develop “Sustaining” measures in virtually each deed you perform within the village. That is the essential ingredient throughout. Success “requires” a Village (a Special Forces designation meaning a neighborhood or part of a neighborhood) at a time. I urge you to keep a record of plans and everything you learn. “The Plan” will work. We want a blueprint of each unique idea of what we do in each Village. As successes accumulate Departments should develop and “improve as you go” a draft pamphlet showing their contribution and how it is sustained. Together these pamphlets will show in detail how to fix and maintain quality of life in a City. Citywide efforts have too many clumsy and expensive drawbacks. Councilors please note: There must be a starting place. The plan shows the best one. The Plan will reach every District as success is proven. Please jump on board as “removers” of bureaucracy. Said with every respect. But so very necessary. This is “Can Do” from you, the Mayor, the Police, Social Services and all Departments. We rebuild our thinking and in turn the City, one Village at a time, into an attractive energized proud City that will attract and influence leadership in Business and set example for other Cities to follow. You do this and they will come. And suffering will be reduced a not exaggerated 90%. There are great advantages in being first. (Refer to “THE PLAN”) Remember, foremost, every improvement will have a sustaining mechanism. I am a former Green Beret. I was trained to cause Villages to participate in common goals and to become self-sustaining and I have never seen this application in Civilian Life. That is because money, bureaucracy and self-interest were not in play. “THE PLAN” shows you how to defer these success sucking weaknesses and cause justice for the people. Safety and quality of life in the village is the goal. Too seldom in life do opportunities present themselves that can really make a difference. Some of the best come from those without

fame or ceremony. Windows of massive opportunity are all too rare in this life. They must be grasped when open. If an unusual, unique and invaluable set of life saving wisdoms are suddenly presented, recognition is urgent less an era of untold value may die on the vine. In these days of pervasive obsequious scrambling to please Political donors (many of whom are dispassionate) and algorithm news designed only for-profit, vital truths and by far most of the people, are being ignored. Our Politicians concentrate on pleasing a low percentage of our City as up to 80% of our City is submerged in the unspeakable horrors of a heroin epidemic. Who tells you that? No one. Every administration since the late 60’s has left the City a far worse place. Not because they are not capable but because a system evolved with money and self-interest more important than the people. This systemic design permeates our Country and greatness is failing. Who tells you that? No one. “PART ONE” in December of 2020, is about reasons and my motivation to do this. It is about a lovely young girl. My good friend for 7 years. And my efforts to save her. And keep her alive. The original “PART ONE” is mostly her story. An example of the suffering that is permeating our City. And how drugs eventually put her on her deathbed. She survived

and today has hope. Her sweetness in her plight was heartbreaking, to see someone so fragile and alone and deserving and so broken. Heroin made her recklessly suicidal, with severe weight loss, facial features drawn tight by heroin, beaten by ruthless drug dealers with no heart or regard for humanity. Her eyes and face blackened and discolored by the fists of scum. I want them. Miraculously, she is alive. She deserves a life. Her and her plight has become my charge. This must all end. This is about victims. So young. So much suffering and lost life. And minds stolen from young Moms and Dads of babies. So dirtbags can get money. This all happened in the first village I outline in the “THE PLAN.” Then this past August another that asked me for help and I love dearly overdosed on drugs bought in this Village. I was in the process of pulling every available emotional trigger to make her well. There was much progress and hope. She wanted out. One day she took that “tiny amount” between life and death, just a little too much heroin purchased in the village, and never woke up. Her story is of another human beauty of the finest kind consumed by the evil of the same damn Village. If we had begun on the first D-Day she and so many others would be alive. It still nearly breaks me to discuss. Special prices for eat-in only

Buffalo Bills 2022 Schedule Breakdown Buffalo Bills expectations haven’t been this high since the 1990’s when the team went to four straight Super Bowls. highlights the group. The Bills also had another solid NFL Draft and many rookies should have an immediate impact including RB James Cook, CB Kaiir Elam and WR Khalil Shakir. They are loaded on both sides and as long as Josh Allen stays upright, anything is possible, including a Super Bowl win. The schedule is daunting but hey, those teams have to play Buffalo too. Let’s look at the 2022 campaign now. AFC East Dominance. The Jets and Dolphins got better, especially Miami, adding speedster wideout Tyreek Hill. The Patriots should be in for a tall climb. The division is Buffalo’s and anything less than 5-1 inside the division in 2022 would be unacceptable, despite the improved clubs mentioned. Prime Time Bills. When you are good, you are challenged with an unbalanced, hard schedule with brutal travel. Buffalo does get some breaks along the way in terms of when they get teams, but they will have to adapt to a lot of long trips and late nights. The Bills visit the Rams on 9-8 to kick off the season on a Thursday as Von Miller faces his old teammates and defending Super Bowl champs. The week after on 9-19, Buffalo seeks revenge against Tennessee on Monday Night Football. On 10-30 Green Bay visits Orchard Park for SNF. 12-1, a Thursday, has the Bills visiting New England. And to open the new year on 1-2, the Bills head to Cincinnati to face Joe Burrow and the defending AFC champs on MNF.

do this? Simply by putting together a series of golf stretches to “loosen” you up. Golf flexibility exercises will loosen the muscles and joints of your body. Preparing them to swing a golf club. They are simple to perform and can get your body and mind more ready to play than just a few practice swings with the driver. This will take a couple of minutes to perform, but it will help you get the body ready to swing the golf club. Once we have gotten the body “loosened up” lets get the mind in the correct space. I have seen all too often the tempo of a swing is way out of whack when a golfer lacks the time to properly warm-up. Attempt to relax, take a few deep breaths, and get the body to slow down a little. This should definitely help create some better tempo in your swing from the start. Also, take your time. Once it is your turn to hit, take a little extra time. Take a few extra practice swings, relax, find your tempo, and match your first swing to the tempo of your practice swing. This is a tip I learned from Dean Reinmuth (top 50 Golf Digest teaching pros). If you are not comfortable over the ball, step away, take a series of practice swings until you find the “right” swing and then perform that same swing over the golf ball. It has done wonders for my Take a few extra practice swings game.
“Put a plan together to start the round out on the right foot and keep you in a positive frame of mind.”

I would also suggest continuing to take extra time on every shot until you feel comfortable and have found your swing. This might not occur until the second or third hole, but it is okay. It allows you to relax, make a good swing, and make a good shot. Finally, when you are rushed I think course management can really help. Think about it for a moment. Why not on the first tee pull out 3-wood instead of a driver, even if it is a par five. Hit a nice shot into the fairway, lay-up, and play for par? Again, starting off with par or even bogey is a lot better than a double or triple, both for your scorecard and mental frame of mind. So if you are rushing to the first tee to get your golf game going let’s review the protocol. First and foremost let’s be smart and utilize the time we have at hand. Let’s take the 5 minutes we have to warm-up the body for the golf swing. We will do this through the implementation of a series of golf flexibility exercises. These golf exercises will get your muscles and joints ready to swing a golf club. Once the body is ready the next step is taking your time. Take a few extra practice swings with the golf club. This will allow you to find the tempo of your golf swing. Finally let’s be smart with our course management skills. Think about what is the best golf shot to make and play within ourselves until our body and mind are ready to go.

You should also check out the new Sweet Potato Waffle Fries with Cinnamon Butter, this sweet and salty combination is the perfect intersection of meal and dessert, so enjoy it accordingly. I also have to mention the most famous item on Eddie’s menu, and an absolute must order, The Original Hot Ham BBQ sandwich! The story of the “Original Hot Ham” BBQ Sandwich is as follows: on one busy summer day in 1946, Eddie Sr. the founder of Eddie’s, ran out of hot dogs! As the tourists grew hungry Eddie decided to make a sandwich that he only made for his family, a toasted seeded roll piled high with capicola ham! The tourists fell in love and the famous spicy sandwich was born! This sandwich is so famous that even celebrities come to Eddie’s just to try it! Eddie’s has been visited by many celebrities over the last (nearly century) including Frank Sinatra, Louis Prima, The Ink Spots, Liza Minelli and even George Foreman! For nearly a century Eddie’s has been happily serving scrumptious food to beach bums, celebrities and everyone in between! I still remember walking into Eddie’s as a kid and being so impressed with the larger than life pies displayed like scrumptious trophies in a case up front and I am so lucky that I get to pass this experience on to my own little ones!

My family and I arrived on a beautiful Tuesday night. As we slowly walked in we watched as the motorcycles lined the streets because Tuesday is bike night in Sylvan Beach. We were quickly seated at a comfortable table that accommodated the four of us and the luggage that is required when you take two babies out of the house. We eagerly looked over the menu and discussed the new items. For appetizers we ordered the Meatballs With Ricotta Cheese, this sharable dish is made up of three of Eddie’s Famous hand rolled Meatballs served with Ricotta Cheese and smothered with their Famous Meat Sauce and topped with fresh basil! Each bite of this dish was absolute perfection on a fork! We also couldn’t pass up an order of the Italian Greens, Eddie’s version of Utica greens featuring Eddie’s famous hot ham. These are amazing and an interesting way to make sure every trip to Eddie’s includes some hot ham! Even though I know Oneida Lake isn’t the ocean, something about sitting at Eddie’s always makes me crave seafood, so this evening I ordered the Fried Fisherman’s Platter with a generous serving of shrimp, scallops, haddock and clams fried to a golden brown. I had a Caesar salad (one of the best I’ve ever had) and garlic fries. This meal was a hit not only with me but also with the littles! Kyle was feeling adventurous so he ordered something he had never ordered before – Eddie’s Special Sub – Meatballs, sausage and peppers on a toasted bun with a drizzle of meat sauce and a side of hot peppers in sauce. I’m not exaggerating when I tell you that he talked about how good it was the entire ride home. Even though we had to-go boxes we couldn’t pass up dessert. Pro Tip – ALWAYS get dessert at Eddies. We decided that we would split a monstrous and aptly named “Cookie Monster Sundae” a huge portion of ice cream and toppings and even whole cookies! We also ordered a slice of banana cream pie to take home because I’m pretty sure that it is illegal not to order pie at Eddie’s. Banana Cream Pie Generations of Central New Yorkers – including yours truly – would agree that it’s just not summer without a trip to Eddie’s Restaurant in Sylvan Beach. From humble beginnings, Eddie’s Restaurant started with a hot dog stand and a dream as the country was finding its way out of the Great Depression. Since its inception, Eddie’s Restaurant has been continuously ran by the Stewart Family through good times and bad, from depression, recession, and even a pandemic! This summer it’s time to bring your family, friends, and even your well behaved furry friend to Eddie’s (or Harpoon Eddie’s across the street for a different vibe but same great food and service) because after all – It wouldn’t be summer in Sylvan Beach without Eddie’s!

Without regular cleaning of your hair brush, this dirt and oil will redeposit onto your hair. Over time this added dirt and oil will plug up your hair follicles and lead to hair thinning or permanent hair loss. You can clean your brush every day when you shower. Clean it with shampoo and scrub the bristles with your hand back and forth. After cleaning, you can dry the brush with a towel and let it sit until the next day. By the next day, it is ready to use and your other brush is ready to be cleaned. So, using a natural hair brush like the boar’s bristle hair brush is the best way to care for your hair. The Fifth Edition of The American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual describes approximately three hundred mental illnesses and disorders. In 2009, under the guidance of NIMH Director Thomas Insel, MD, the NIH’s Human Connectome Project sought to better understand mental illness by mapping brain and neurological connectivity without reference to DSM labels. Some patients’ families found this biologybased approach unhelpful. Dr. Insel, a neuroscientist and psychiatrist describes an encounter with real world frustration with mental health care in his book was speaking to a group about the neurochemical components of schizophrenia; from the audience, the father of a schizophrenic son yelled, “our house is on fire and you’re telling me about the chemistry of the paint! Magnesium Magnesium is the stuff of life. I guess you can say that about all the elements really because without them it would be a different universe but Magnesium in particular holds a special place in the heart of modern nutritionists and health care providers because of its protean effects on the body human. Magnesium deficiency is serious but underdiagnosed because the most severe consequences...ie. death, are rarely blamed on an electrolyte abnormality. The same researchers that say magnesium deficiency is rarely apparent clinically will also admit that 75% of

Americans are not getting enough from their diet. It would be great to get all the Magnesium you need from your diet but studies have shown this is unlikely. America’s foremost expert on magnesium if not the world expert on Magnesium is Dr. Thomas Levy who’s also been extensively on vitamin C and on Calcium the former being beneficial and the latter not so much. Magnesium is easy to measure in the blood but unfortunately the vast majority of magnesium is not in the blood it’s in the cells and in the mitochondria. You can have a normal serum magnesium level and still have magnesium depletion. Experts say you really should check the red blood cell magnesium level to get a more accurate number but even that doesn’t reflect the true magnesium level. There is only one place to get a cellular magnesium level tested in America and unfortunately New York state does not allow that testing. For reasons that continue to baffle me, New York state does not allow a lot of major laboratories to do business in New York. These companies are attempting to provide health insights that are not available from companies currently practicing in New York state. I have written repeatedly to the Department of Health questioning the policy and asked them to remove these hindrances and allow me to order tests from certified Labs that are important to my patients but so far the Silence has been deafening. I guess they are busy with other issues but you would think at least a bug off letter and response would be appropriate. Many patients are on diuretics for their blood pressure and many others are on proton pump inhibitors for indigestion and many patients are on both. These medications are chief causes of hypomagnesemia. Low magnesium can have protean manifestations including weakness, poor sleep, numbness, nausea, muscle twitching or cramps, and even personality changes. Eventually when the magnesium level gets low enough you get irregular heartbeats and finally cardiac arrest. Why is this element so important? Magnesium is the second most abundant cation, that is, positively charged ions, inside the cells of the body after potassium. It’s an essential cofactor for hundreds of Eventually low magnesium can lead to cardiac arrest critical enzymes and is

known to be involved in roughly 80% of all known metabolic functions in the body. Not impressed yet ? It has been found to be critical for the metabolism of ADP which is one of the energy generating systems in each cell. It’s also required for protein DNA and RNA synthesis as well as for the synthesis of fatty acids and the conversion of vitamin D into its active form in the body. Magnesium may also play a critical role in the production of glutathione, the most important and most concentrated antioxidant inside the cells. Inside the cell magnesium works to keep sodium and calcium levels lower and potassium levels higher. At the cellular level calcium is dangerous...when cells die they usually due so because they are flooded with calcium. Excess calcium intake has been associated with higher all-cause mortality. Magnesium is an intracellular calcium channel blocker and you recognize the term because so many blood pressure meds are calcium channel blockers. So magnesium, a natural substance, does the same thing those prescription drugs do. Studies have shown that deaths from all causes jump 40% in subjects with the serum magnesium below 0.73 millimoles per liter which is found in about 25% of the population. As Dr. Levy points out, randomized double-blind clinical trials have shown that Magnesium supplementation is an effective treatment for metabolic syndrome. Furthermore, higher dietary intake of Magnesium was associated with reduced cardiovascular mortality in a large Japanese study and a similar result was seen in the Hawaiian study with a 30-year follow-up. A study was able to demonstrate that increasing dietary Magnesium intake was significantly associated with reduced risk of heart failure and stroke diabetes and all-cause mortality. Likewise magnesium plays an important role in both increasing and sustaining higher free plasma testosterone levels. Testosterone also increases cortisol levels and Vitamin D also appears to have an independent linear association with free testosterone. Now there are many different forms of Magnesium supplements. The only one I don’t recommend is Magnesium Oxide because it’s so poorly absorbed. Liposomal magnesium probably has the best absorption but you have other options including magnesium citrate which also helps with insomnia and constipation. Magnesium sulfate also called epsom salts is great for baths and you can absorb magnesium through your skin that way.

Magnesium taurate is easier on the bowels and the taurine is important for eye health. Magnesium gluconate is also very well absorbed and also has properties that chelates heavy metals like calcium iron and copper. Magnesium chloride has anti infective properties. Magnesium glycinate is well absorbed and the glycine is a component of glutathione which is also used in synthesis of collagen and creatine. Magnesium threonate is best at crossing the blood brain barrier. If you are trying to use magnesium to lower your blood pressure your best bet is the liposomal magnesium. Liposomal means the magnesium is inside a fat globule which greatly increases its absorption. Obviously I think Magnesium is very important but, of course, you should do nothing without checking with your healthcare provider. Unless your level is high (which, I can tell you from reviewing thousands of samples, is very rare) you should consider trying some supplement and see how you feel and how it affects your health. This is especially important if you are taking a water pill (diuretic) for your blood pressure which many people do and if you are one of those people who treat your indigestion with drugs like prilosec, aciphex, protonix etc. Many people whom I have recommended Magnesium supplementation to have reported feeling better in many different ways. Why not give it a try and see for yourself. There’s that N of 1 experiment I keep referring to. Until next month...get well and stay well. Hard to get just from your diet JT BARRY MD

Metaverses This column isn’t an argument for or against any life choice – rather, an exploration of a concept that has been the stuff of science and fiction for a long, long time. That is, what is “real?” Would we know it if we saw it? Put together, “science” and “fiction” gave us one of my favorite genres of literature: science fiction, or sci-fi. When I was very young, my route to and from grade school took me by a branch of the Buffalo Public Library, and this charming former mansion was my introduction into many branches of literature – but, at least as I remember it, I read my way all the way through the science fiction section, starting with such greats as Asimov and Clarke, and all the way through Verne and Wells. Jules Verne, often called “The Father of Science Fiction,” wrote “Journey to the Center of the Earth” in 1864, and while it would be perhaps dismissed by today’s sci-fi fans as primitive in execution, the concept – that there is another world waiting for us deep within the earth – is perhaps not so silly.
At least, not when you consider the metaverse. We’ll get there in a moment. Robert Heinlein, whose novel “Red Planet” was another one of my early discoveries, was also responsible for the famous “Stranger in a Strange Land,” introducing us way back in 1961 to the idea of a human raised outside the sphere of human influence, who has, as a result of his

Martian upbringing, the ability to “grok,” or understand something on a sort of molecular level – a connection deeper than something merely emotional or physical. In other words, an experience that was beyond the “normal”
human one. In 1999, the hit movie “The Matrix” was released. Its premise wasn’t entirely new in the sci-fi world. In it, the machines have taken over, and raise crops of humans in pods to exploit their physical selves to produce power to maintain the “lives” of the code-driven machines. This film explored the idea of reality given that all that the human “network” experienced was an endless dream supplied by the machine code to their sleeping minds; everything is perfect, they themselves are ideal. But they don’t know any better. Way back in the 1800s Mary Shelley speculated in “Frankenstein” about what might happen if a human being were to create another human being – and the experiment went awry. Did this human being have a soul? Was it merely parts sewn together and a beating heart, or something more? The “metaverse” was a word first used by author Neal Stephenson in his book “Snow Crash,” written in 1992, and exploring the possibilities of “what comes after the internet.”

In Stephenson’s story, there is a parallel world, along the lines of what was then being called an MMO (massively multiplayer online game), in which users create an avatar to represent them as they explore. In other words, they are playing God to their own creation of self. As with most worlds, there are soon social strata arranged in which those with technical know-how and access to superior tools become the nobility, and those who must log in to the “game” from a public access terminal or who lack tech skills are soon shoved down to the lowest rungs of the gaming ladder. It’s both fascinating and alarming how some 30 years ago, Stephenson could foresee a world which would extend to anyone and everyone (think of online games for kids, where very young children are literally doing just as Stephenson predicted and not just creating People of any age can create an “avatar” avatars but dressing them up with extras in terms of hair, weapons, outfits, abilities like flying or getting extra “lives” – that is, if you have the deluxe package); but might actually extend to the “real” world – in which people of any age can create an “avatar,” which might mean something as simple as choosing one’s hair color or the shape of one’s nose; to something more at issue and being able to do this at will, and with the cooperation of first our social circles, and now, perhaps, our greater world at large – school, work, and beyond. Today, we are, in a very real sense, more than the sum of our biological parts. We have, of course, for a long time, assumed that we had a “soul,” which was a layer of non-biological intelligence and purpose, which had merit and value – and presumably an eternity beyond its stay on earth in a body. Not that long ago, after platforms like Facebook presented a public face to our world online, the question arose: what happens when the account’s owner dies ITRW (in the real world)? The account would simply live on. And while that problem has been solved, there are many of these representatives of our living selves that will continue, without some fail-safe like account inactivity for some extended period of time, long after we’ve gone. Do androids dream of electric sheep? (See Philip K. Dick for the answer)

Tales from the Vine
by plr articles by Cassandra Harrington
Tote Your Wine in Style C’mon ladies have you ever rushed home after work exhausted as usual, only to be faced with getting your kids dressed, into the car and headed to baseball, soccer or whatever the sport du jour happens to be? Well wouldn’t it be great to get to there, find your seat in the stands and pour yourself a glass of your favorite wine – directly from your very own and very stylish, wine bag handbag. It would then be time to sit back and enjoy a refreshing glass of cold wine or beverage of choice and relax. When was the last time you headed out to a baby shower where coffee, iced tea and non-alcohol punch was served? It’s your only day off from work and you prefer, no you would love to have a T & V (Vodka and Iced Tea). You open the discrete flap of your wine bag and pour a shot of vodka in both you and your friends iced tea. She takes a drink and says; “I thought this was a non-alcohol event,” and you open your handbag, remove the flap and disclose the source of your vodka!

Somehow the baby shower turned the corner and started to be much more interesting, if not even somewhat enjoyable. Five more baby blanket gifts opened and you’re laughing about last week’s office party!! For the first time you are actually going to tag along with the boys at the Formula One races. The boys are off for the third time fetching their semi-cold beer all the while you are enjoying your ice cold favorite Italian Pino Grigo dispensed from your wine bag. Why wait for a waitress or find your way through a sea of patrons while your drink becomes warm? Enjoy the comfort of your wine bag in your seat. Be that someone who is a justifiably complacent and happy racing fan, saving money and enjoying a favorite cold wine from your designer bag. For anyone who ever wished for an easy way to take a beverage on the go, a GenieBag, designed by entrepreneur, Beth Walters will grant that wish. At first glance, a GenieBag looks like a designer handbag. But the unique design of GenieBags allows them to serve as stylish, discreet, and effective beverage carriers. A stylish one of a kind custom made Geniebag Wine Bag, handbag that discretely keeps your favorite beverage hot or cold. For situations where it’s difficult to bring a drink, such as taking your wine to the ballpark, concert, or movie theater, a GenieBag can be the solution. The spout, cleverly hidden at one end of the wine bag – handbag pours discretely into your glass. The bags currently feature three styles: Cosmo, NY Nights, and Pino. Each can hold two liters of the beverage of your choice in a discreet, safe, subtle carrier that can go from a casual summer baseball game to an elegant concert to a party at a friend’s house. Beth Walters a consummate designer with a flair for innovation and also a consummate wine connoisseur targets several demographics, including busy moms, professionals looking to relax on the weekends, and friends gathering to catch up. The GenieBags team has learned that women love the look of the handbags, but are also impressed with both the concept and the practicality. The motivation can be said to be, well, a desire for convenience while maintaining a large dose of class and dignity while saving massive amounts of money. Having a glass of wine or some similar alcohol or non-alcohol equivalent when you want it takes a Genie Bag. There simply are times when it’s either unavailable or perhaps prohibited. Beth just wouldn’t stand for that – mostly! The handbags are designed for fun and convenience. The distinctive, discreet design allows anyone to pull out a glass or two and share a drink without bothering anyone or making a scene. You and a few friends can enjoy your Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, any other favorite with ease. What a better way to enjoy a beautiful afternoon...no messy clean up, no bottles to dispose of, just a discrete and entertaining way to spend a sunny afternoon with a BFF. Of course your friends are going to love it...and indeed, expect to make a bunch of new friends in the process. Cheers!!
