navigates the perils of childhood. This becomes particularly true when, sensing her reservations and outright fear of attending kindergarten orientation, Woody sneaks into her backpack in order to provide the moral support that may be needed. Bonnie struggles to make connections on her first day, and finds herself sitting alone when it comes time to build a craft. Woody, witnessing the unfolding devastation firsthand, quickly collects supplies for Bonnie when she steps away. When she returns to her table, she finds a number of objects including a spork, a red pipe cleaner, and googly eyes. With this odd assortment, she crafts her very own friend. Thus, the delightfully absurd and scene-stealing Forky (Tony Hale) is born. The young girl becomes instantly enamored with her new creation, and though Forky is reluctant to embrace his new place in the world, Woody is there to help him learn the ropes. This becomes ever more apparent as Forky attempts to throw himself into the trash at every conceivable moment, going so far as to chuck himself out of an RV window as it speeds down the highway. Woody, realizing the spork’s importance in Bonnie’s life, goes after him, setting into motion a road trip that will test

the limits of companionship and loyalty. Along the way, Forky will learn the importance of his existence, and Woody crosses paths with his long lost, beloved Bo Peep (Annie Potts.) Though questions swirled in regards to its relevance in the planning stages, now that TOY STORY 4 is here, I’m elated that it proves to be the sequel we never knew we needed. In 2019, there is something wholly refreshing, and almost daring, about a G-rated family film that slides into the summer season and holds its own. Endearing, charming, and often hilarious, it utilizes dazzling animation, a wonderful script, and impeccable voice talents to command the attention of every single viewer, regardless of their age. Like its predecessors, this installment features familiar favorites in regards to characters, and finds a way to seamlessly introduce new ones. Whether it’s the high-flying antics of Canada’s greatest daredevil Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves), the comedic duo of Ducky (KeeganMichael Kay) and Bunny (Jordan Peele), the tortured and possibly less-villainous-than-youthought Gabby Gabby (Christina Hendricks) or the indelible Forky, there is enough originality and character development to warrant this additional chapter in the TOY STORY saga. For a film, and a franchise, that is literally built upon mass marketability, it is pretty astounding that the production comes across as both intimate and heartwarming. It is the rare movie that forces even the most cynical of cinemagoers to let down their guard, and embrace the whimsical charm of these fictional friends. This, of course, is because director Josh Cooley and screenwriters Andrew Stanton and Stephany Folsom seamlessly tap into the nostalgic vulnerabilities of its audience. Whether it was the first installment in 1995, or this one in RATED: G 2019, the viewer can’t help but draw sentimental RUN TIME: 1h 40min parallels between the characters on the screen, GENRE: Animation, Adventure, and warm memories of childhood. And, though Comedy there are moments of unnerving peril, there is STARRING: Tom Hanks, Tim also a constant barrage of empowering kindness Allen, Annie Potts and warmth that is largely vacant in modern filmDIRECTORS: Josh Cooley making. WRITERS: John Lasseter, Once again, it appears that we have reached Andrew Stanton a delightful end to the TOY STORY tale, and yet, I surely wouldn’t be surprised if, in the future, we GRADE: A saw the crew again. As a franchise that has now spanned generations, and Come Dance to the Sounds of engaged and entertained from its initial inception, there is a sentimental EVERY TUESDAY connection forged between each one of these 6:30 - 10:00pm characters, and the millions $8 at door of adoring fans who have Cash Bar + Light Refreshments Salsa • Bachata • Merengue • Cha.Cha allowed them to infiltrate Lessons from 6:30 - 8pm our lives and revolutionize the way we see our toys. You should be the Artist.” So it was none other than Tommy Mottola who help to change my trajectory in the music business. And then of course there was Woodstock, meeting Richie Havens, and cutting my teeth performing live. CS: How are things going for you? BM: I won’t lie, things have been tough. My Parkinkson’s tremors worsened to the point that before my last Christmas Show at the Turning Stone in 2017, I had pretty much made up my mind to take a leap of faith and have a procedure called DBS (Deep Brain Stimulation). This surgery minimizes the tremors, but it does not fix motor skill imbalance and unfortunately I had a fall and broke my hip. In fact, after my surgery I fell again and this has slowed down my recovery. I fight every day with the goal of returning home so for now, I am working at physical therapy to regain strength as the ordeal of being in a hospital or rehab facility for 11 months has been difficult. I am fighter though, and I am still fighting and looking at life as a glass half full, not empty. Benny Mardones, July 13 continued from pg 5 save my life. I lost my dear friend Joe DiMaio on September 28, 2019 and due to my surgery and fall I was unable to make Joe’s service and that was excruciating as Joe and his wife Zofia were family to me. Joe refused to lead on he was dealing with Cancer because he knew of my battle and so the last 2 years have been tough. Buck Kelly and Mike Losurdo stood by Joe and were my surrogates as he dealt with his illness and I am forever grateful. CS: You keep fighting brother. You have the entire city of Syracuse right fiercely behind you. I was living in San Diego when I saw you pop-up on MTV … obviously indicative of your momentum in the music business at that time. Please share with us all some of your career highlights. BM: Whewwwwwww, let’s see. Into The Night is obviously my greatest achievement from a commercial success perspective. When the song took off, Bobby Tepper and I hit the talk show circuit from Merv Griffin to the Midnight Special and I was on “everybody’s A list” at the time. The song has, and continues to pay dividends to me and remains one of the top 25 songs played on American Radio over the past 35 years. In fact, Into the Night is one of a few songs by the same Artist that hit the top 20 twice in the same decade. In 1989 an Arizona station KZZP ran a segment entitled, Where are they now?. The most popular question was “whatever happened to the guy who sang Into the Night?” Scott Shannon the Program Director for Pirate Radio in LA added Into the Night and the song took off again as radio stations across the country followed suit. This led to my signing with Curb Records and releasing the self- titled A young Roy Orbison Benny Mardones LP, known as the Blue Album. I am blessed for Into the Night. Most of my fans know that meeting and becoming dear friends with Roy Orbison (one of the greatest singers to ever live) was like a dream come true. Roy would often tell me “Benny, just sing and you will have it all.” Well, I should have just sang, but as you know the commercial success of Into the Night, and the environment of the music business during the 1980’s led to many temptations I couldn’t resist and I developed a severe cocaine addiction that temporarily destroyed my career, and almost killed me. Fortunately, I was able to quit that habit cold turkey and regain my footing, mostly for the sake of my son Michael, and also for my own salvation. Since that time I feel I’ve written many incredible songs and have taken the stage with some of the most prominent names in the music business. My relationship with Roy Orbison was special, and after Roy passed his wife Barbara called upon me to sing Running Scared on the Showtime Tribute to Roy Orbison. Barbara said to me, “Benny you are the only one that can hit the note and do this song justice,” and she flew in Elvis Presley’s Band to back me up and when I sang that night, it was if I was channeling Roy. It was such an honor and the audience responded in such a way that it was one of my greatest moments. I was alongside such luminaries as Bob Dylan, John Fogerty, Johnny Cash and Kd Lang. It was such an honor to be a part of Roy’s tribute and to take the stage with so many heavyweights I admire. In addition to my friendship with Roy, I’d have to say meeting Richie Havens and becoming dear friends was also a highlight. I am sure you remember Frampton Comes Alive, as it was and remains one of the biggest selling albums and tours in history. Peter was kicking off the tour at Madison Square Garden and Blue Oyster Cult was to open for him. BOC had a conflict or something and, due to the strength of my local performances, I got the call to open for the Frampton Comes Alive show at the Garden! I was so scared that Richie Havens literally pulled me out of the bathroom and pushed me on stage. He said “it’s time Mardones” and that is the closest feeling to being in a prize fight I had ever experienced. So I sprinted out on the stage and just began playing Oh Me Oh My and when I started singing the Garden got very quiet and everyone took out their lighters and began waving them. There is footage somewhere as Greg Ross included a piece of it in the Documentary on my life. It was a moment that led to Andrew Loog Oldham knocking on my apartment door the next day in Spanish Harlem. I was still scared and said, “hey wait a minute I can only play a few chords on the piano” and Andrew said, “just sing for me lad, sing for me.” Andrew Loog Oldham was the Manager and Producer of the Rolling

Stones so this was a pretty big deal, and it opened up many doors for me. There were other highlights like American Bandstand with Dick Clark (a real sweetheart of a guy to me). Dick contacted me after I was diagnosed with Parkinsons and we had lunch in LA and he was always very supportive and kind. I also must say that coming to Syracuse, and becoming friends with Joe DeMaio also helped to save my life. My dear friend Ed Pozzoulli got me out of NYC to remove the temptation and Joe picked me up in Syracuse and the rest is history and the love affair with Syracuse was born. Some of my shows here I consider to be my best and that was the basis for the bond we still share today! CS: Share with us a funny story or two. There are more than a few, that’s for sure. Anyone that has been to my shows knows that I used to throw “towels” to the audience. This kind of started by accident, people loved it and my dear friend and Road Manager Tom Piraino would toss me the towels and I would throw them to the audience. On one occasion we ran out during the show, the fans were screaming and I gave Uncle Tommy this killer look like WTF and so he took his shirt off and some of the road crews and they cut them into towels. It was pretty funny. Another time we were in Youngstown, Ohio – 3 nights of concerts with Alice Cooper on Thursday, Eddie Money on Friday and me on Saturday. It rained like hell on Friday so Eddie and I were scheduled for a double header on Saturday. I was on first and upon hitting the stage with Way of the World, my dear friends Ed Pozzoulli, Joe DeMaio, Tommy Delle Donne, and Buck Kelly were signaling to me that the entire left side PA system wasn’t working and my mic was literally inoperable. This took a bit to fix so I was not happy. When I confronted the “road crew manager” on Eddie Money’s touring bus, it almost ended in a riot as my boys didn’t take too kindly to the disrespect. Oddly, this encounter resulting in my becoming much closer with Eddie Money. Kind of funny we were going to kick his road crew manager’s ass and we become

closer friends. There are a few others. Back in the day some of the British Bands took an anti-American kind of stance. I loved and listened to their music, but the disrespect to America kind of put me off and that led to some interesting moments, most notably a feud I had with Elvis Costello that got a little press. Being a Navy Veteran, that just wasn’t cool to me so having the American flag as a backdrop at all my concerts became a not so silent protest to those that didn’t appreciate America. Those are the PG rated stories so we’ll leave it at that. CS: What is your take on music today? BM: The music business is different today in every way. Back in my day and the early days of rock and roll EVERYONE listened to Popular / Adult Contemporary radio and the diversity of music and sound on radio was substantial. On the same station you would hear Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Boston, Frampton, and Foreigner, to Michael Jackson, James Brown, Motown, Air Supply and Barry Manilow, and of course all of the British Bands. I’d like to think back in the day it was about the melody, quality, sound and performance a bit more than it may be today. Today music is a bit more “walled off” into genres (hip hop, rap, etc.), whereas in the 1980’ / 90’s it wasn’t like that so much. Sure there was Disco that everyone listened and dance to, and at times hated, but mostly there was a lot of cross pollination between styles and genres, all of which fit in the Rock, Pop Tully Historical Society’s Rock, Adult Contemporary world. wice Read Book Store CS: What would be your best advice for aspiring musicians? We have some great BM: In my day I feel it was more about your ability as a songwriter, musician and/ summer reads! or performer – the Artistry so to speak. I mean that’s what we had to worry about 24 State St., Tully – creating and executing our craft. Sports Take by MIKE LINDSLEY

Setting Up Saratoga You can tell me and anyone else about any race track in the country. Have at it, whether I have been there or not. Nothing beats Saratoga Race Course. Nothing. Years ago, before I really had a major interest in covering and following horse racing, people tried to convince me to go out there. “Mike, you are such a huge sports guy. You have to go.” I followed the Triple Crown races for years from afar and that was it. Now? It is everything. Races from the West to East, prepping the 2-year-old circuit for the 3-year old season, stakes races, females, males, Saratoga and more! I’ve also been to all the Triple Crown races and the Travers Stakes every year since 2013. I went from not that interested to obsessed. And it all started at Saratoga when former jockey Richard Migliore gave me a tour back in the Summer of 2013 when I moved to Albany. So with that, what makes it so special? Why make a visit out to the most glorious, best track in the country? “Saratoga has evolved over the years,” says horse racing insider and handicapper Larry Latour. “Once well known as ‘The August Place To Be,’ it is now more appropriate to consider it ‘The Summer Place To Be!’ This is the oldest and most famous racing venue in the country with an ambience that is equaled only by the world class racing presented over the 40 days of the meet.”

While the Travers Stakes is nice to go to, every day is simply amazing at Saratoga. A quick suggestion is to go to a regular day during the week before you hit a stakes race day like Travers or the Jim Dandy or something else, walk the paddock, see the whole place with less people, walk down to the fence at night and watch those beautiful horses just a few feet in front of you. Soak it all in. Want another reason to LOVE Saratoga Race Course? You can bring in your own coolers with food and drink, and yes, adult drinks. Just have cans and no glass. Having said that, must-try food is Shake Shack and the Mac and Cheese truck. Absolutely incredible.

The Middle Eastern Festival is Back for its 90th Year! What started out as a picnic for the parishioners of St. Elias Church to celebrate the feast of St.Elias 90 years ago, has now become one of the nations biggest Middle Eastern Festivals! This year featuring four daily specials that add richness and variety to our menu. Our first daily special, Musakhan, is to Palestine what apple pie is to America. A dish so popular and delicious that it didn’t feel right not to add to the menu. It’s made of chicken thighs, onions sautéed in extra virgin olive oil, and a lot of Sumac - a spice that is red in color and tangy in flavor - and topped with crunchy toasted nuts. Come and try this delicacy on Thursday 7/11, the first day of our festival. Our second special, served on Friday 7/12 is Lahm bi Ajeen, or meat pie; a pasty blend of ground lamb and beef with diced tomatoes, peppers, garlic and onions, spread over thin-crust flatbread and baked in the oven. This dish is popular is Armenia, Turkey, Lebanon and Syria as well as their communities world wide. Our third special is Kafta, served on Saturday 7/13, the equivalent of burgers to Americans! It is a ground beef and lamb mix with parsley and onions, shaped and formed by hand on a skewer and grilled to yummy perfection! Our fourth special is Zaatar (famous oregano blend made from oregano or thyme with sesame and sumac) encrusted filet mignon shish kabab, grilled and absolutely delicious. This dish is gaining popularity now in the Middle East as a fusion between an old traditional dish, Zaatar, and meat. Zaatar is Lahm Bi Ajeen (Meat Pie) usually eaten with pita bread that is first dipped in olive oil so that the Zaatar blend can stick to the bread. It is usually eaten in the morning as a vegan option, so adding it as a spice to meat is way out of the box! Our fans loved our Arabic pistachio ice cream so much last year that we decided to bring it back. Gannon’s Ice Cream is making this special ice cream exclusively for the Middle Eastern Festival! The Write Stuff by NANCY ROBERTS

Stories by Richard Krause I’ll start this review by going “schoolmarm” on you. Short stories are not easy to write – well. Many writers begin by writing a short piece of fiction because it requires less planning, plotting, and labor than a novel or in many cases, even a poem. They’re often surprised to learn how difficult it can be to create a truly well-written short story. There isn’t really a defined length for a short story, but Britannica.com defines it as “a brief fictional prose narrative that is shorter than a novel and that usually deals with only a few characters.” Generally, a short story will be a self-contained incident or series of linked incidents. Horror typically deals with the para – or supernatural; Wikipedia says horror is a form of “speculative fiction which is intended to frighten, scare, disgust, startle its readers by

inducing feelings of horror and terror.” This collection of “stories,” at least for this reader, wasn’t so much “stories” as “studies,” or “musings” that dug down into areas of the psyche where the reader will feel uncomfortable. In fact, rather than “horror” of the ordinary, I might have called these stories “discomfort of the ordinary.” A man obsesses about killing Japanese beetles on his property, and invokes Gregor, the man in Kafka’s “Metamorphosis” who wakes to find himself changed into a cockroach. Our narrator in a way becomes the revolting, insatiable eater in his garden that he imagines the beetles to be. In another story, a man gets a splinter in his finger, and in some odd way becomes wood – feels for and with the wood. The writer even plays with the various ways we use the term “wood.” Of the first few stories, the only one in which anything “happens” in a direct sense is the tale about Hamid, an overly-tall Afghani who is mistaken for, we assume, Bin Laden, and killed by American troops out to right the wrong Bin Laden committed (note that it’s never really stated that this is who it is). Hamid himself is actually the “father” of his people; the man who shelters and protects them. The “horror” is that he is killed simply because of his height. In yet another musing, an orthodontist takes sadistic pleasure in tightening the braces of his young patients ever-so-slightly too much, and even more in killing the rare animals he hunts across the globe, mounting their sightless head on his walls to amuse and delight those same children who don’t understand the horror that brought them to their final resting place. Krause uses few of the standard literary conventions – opening paragraphs, descriptions, dialog and action. His preferred style is a series of questions, or, as I said “musings.” “Who are these foreigners who have invaded our homeland, flooded our major leagues, found an ally from intermarriage, and now this? Does it not show something’s wrong with the game?” The events themselves in these short pieces are slight: Hamid is killed; a man strips beetles off his trees; a nun retires to her places of birth; a boy is injured by a hard-batted foul ball. The thoughts spilled onto the pages of the book are dark, troubling, disjointed – like trying to hold a conversation when the music is too loud or the other party isn’t responding in a way you’d expect. You say, “How are you today,” and they respond “The pants are about to split at the seams, and there is nothing anyone can do about it.” At first you might be amused, or bemused – and after a while you’d begin to feel uncomfortable, and finally, if not horror, then certainly unsettled, disturbed, uncertain. And if their words almost made sense – were just out of reach, or invoked other characters or times or people or events with which you might have some familiarity, without being clear and precise about it – so much the more distressing as you try to grasp onto something familiar but it slithers away and won’t be firmly gripped and held before the words move on to another idea or turn around on themselves. Hence the “horror” of the ordinary. The things that might lurk in what appears to be normal – if you had eyes to see, or the imagination to invent.

Dining Out by Kerilyn E. Micale

At Lakeshore Yacht and Country Club

Calamari Fritti

Life is too short not to enjoy yourself. Take a half day to play a round of golf, sit by the lake and watch the waves gently roll in, and by all means treat yourself to a fantastic meal! If this sounds like your perfect day I’m here to tell you that you can find it all at Lakeshore Yacht and Country Club! It was established in 1860 and is located on the shores of Oneida Lake at 6777 Lakeshore Road in Cicero. You just have to check out Lola, the new restaurant, serving sensational culinary creations and now open to the public! Lakeshore Yacht and Country Club is truly a little slice of paradise with its picturesque PGA

rated golf course surrounded nestled along the South Shore of Oneida Lake. They also boast an exclusive harbor, heated Olympic sized pool, and a beautiful club house featuring stunning panoramic views. Lakeshore’s private 18 Hole Championship Golf course is nurtured by beautiful Oneida Lake which gives bounty to their lush greens, beautiful ponds, and flowing streams. The breathtaking beauty of the 120-acre course landscape lifts the human spirit and provides members the priceless value and edifying experience of nature’s grandeur. Kyle and I went to Lola on a beautiful summer evening. We were seated in the stunning dining room with a view of the harbor and the gold course. We started our meal with Limoncello Scallops, hearty scallops topped with prosciutto, cherry peppers, Kalamata olives, and a limoncello reduction served with a side of arugula frise. This dish was both delicious and beautifully plated; it was an absolute delight to both our eyes and our taste buds! We also shared the Calamari Fritti, tender hand breaded calamari and cherry peppers served with lemon, marinara, and aioli. Every bite was light and flavorful. For our entrees we both ordered beef that was cooked to perfection. I decided on the 10 oz Bone-In Filet Mignon, topped with a perfectly melted crust of bleu cheese and served with risotto Milanese and seasonal vegetables, which happened to be perfectly cooked multicolored carrots. The filet was super tender and the risotto was flawless! Kyle ordered the Bone-In Ribeye, a gigantic 20oz cut seasoned fantastically and chargrilled to excellence. This masterpiece was served with whipped potatoes and sautéed asparagus. Both entrees were stunningly presented! For dessert we couldn’t pass up the lemon blueberry mascarpone cake served with whipped cream and a delightful flourless chocolate and Jamison torte. Both desserts were the perfect way to end the perfect meal with Lakeshore Yacht and Country Club is a little slice of paradise a view! If you just can’t get enough of

How Long Do I Have to Wear a Self Tanner?

Beauty & Fashion

by SARAHBETH KLUZINSKI

NEW LOCATION!

For those who are new to the world of self-tanning, the process can be quite intimidating, and worries are certainly understandable. The most common concerns are turning orange, smelling like burnt toast, and leaving lotion stains all over the place. The good news by SARAHBETH KLUZINSKI is that you will quickly get the hang of it after a few tries, and realize that in order to have great success, you must follow three rules: 1) use a high-quality product, 2) apply it properly, and 3) leave it on long enough for it to take effect. The latter can sometimes be the most intimidating since self-tanning products seem to come with a Catch 22: although you have to wear it long enough to do its job, you don’t want to smell bad at work or school while it’s doing it, nor do you want to wear it too long and risk looking like a carrot. Fortunately, you do not have to worry much about any of these concerns so long as you follow the three rules mentioned above; especially the rule about leaving your product on for the right amount of time.

If you are using a high quality product, which you should be, it will take at least 6 hours for it to begin taking effect, and at least another two or three for it to render long-lasting results. This means that most good quality self-tanners must be worn between 6 and 10 hours for best results. Why? The answer is DHA. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the most effective sunless tanning products contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient. Before you take a shower, go swimming, get sweaty, or come into contact with water at all, you must let the dihydroxyacetone take effect first. If you do anything that gets you wet or makes you sweat profusely before the product can work, you will not get the best color possible because the DHA didn’t have time to react with the amino acids in the upper layer of dead skin cells to produce a lasting color change.

Application Tips

To solve the concerns of smelling strange or feeling uncomfortable for an entire day, simply apply your self-tanner at night, let it fully dry, go to sleep, and then shower it off in the morning. This method gets great results. After you shower, any residual streaks and smells will be gone, and you will see nothing but luminous, glowing skin!

Benny Mardones, July 13 continued from pg 7 Radio to get our songs added, and that meant knocking on doors. The difference is, back then the model was in place if you copped a hit like Into the Night. The Industry model rewarded it as people bought records and they paid more for albums and merchandise. The digital revolution changed that with the ability to copy a CD. Hell, back then Steely Dan didn’t even tour —they were a studio band that had many hit records— but today, they tour as, if not, you can’t make money on 99 cent downloads. So today’s Musicians have to be “media savvy” and a bit better at using those mediums to promote their artistry. Again, we promoted ourselves too, like Bobby Tepper and I writing a song about American Bandstand with the hope we would be invited on. I guess that was entrepreneurial, but today it takes even more on the business side. The days of singing and beating the hell out of hotel rooms for the record company to pick up the bill are over so to speak. CS: You’ve written for others. Please tell. BM: Yes Chuck, as I mentioned earlier I started my career as a songwriter until Tommy Mottola inspired me to pursue singing. During and after Into the Night became a huge success I became very close friends with Roy Orbison. As you know Roy was one of the greatest Artists and Singers to ever live. Rolling Stone lists Roy at #13 on their Greatest Singers of All Time list and Elvis Presley said “Roy had the greatest and most distinctive voice he had ever heard.” Roy and I wrote some songs together and one in particular —Fool For Falling in Love— I recorded on my Journey Through Time album. I was given a gift by Roy’s wife Barbara. She wrote a song called, I Want It All and so I recorded it on the Journey Through Time album as a tribute to my love and admiration for Roy. I also wrote and performed with others. When Into the Night was rocking the charts, Eddie Money was spiraling to stardom with Baby Hold On To Me so it was kind of ironic that we became friends later in our careers and collaborated on songwriting. Eddie and I shared the stage many times in our career and he was king enough to help me launch

my last album Timeless right here in Syracuse at the Palace Theatre. CS: What is it like to work with Tommy Mattola? BM: It was great. Tommy inspired me to do my own thing, to be an Artist, Singer and Performer. Early on he saw something in me and I am grateful for it, and also to be mentioned in his book Hitmaker. I circled the wagons a few times with Tommy, as after Into the Night became a big hit for 2nd time, Tommy signed me on a label called Crave which was under Sony Music and in the name of his wife Mariah Carey. We put out the Bless A Brand New Angel LP in 1998 and unfortunately their relationship ended shortly thereafter, things changed at Sony and the label was folded after only existing for 18 months (February 1997, July 1998). They had a HUGE marketing push teed up with Independent Promoters in all markets and that album was positioned to be a great success until the personal strife sunk the label. Timing is everything I guess. I was set up with one of the greatest promoters in the Industry with Tommy Mottola, Mariah loved my work and was behind it, and then poof. I mean Tommy worked with Hall and Oates, Michael Jackson, John Mellencamp, Celine Dion, Carly Simon, Diana Ross and many many other Industry Heavyweights. I then worked with several of my friends and associates in finding another label, but it was a tough time as the “ground was literally moving underneath the music Industry,” most notably through piracy and ever declining record sales. The business model that I was weaned on was under attack and as such “investment money” to promote Artists was very hard to find. Len Fico of Fuel Records gave it a run, but they were undercapitalized and without the Independent Promotors and marketing budget, we couldn’t get it out there. I still fell the Bless a Brand New Angel LP was something special and that my voice was incredibly strong at that time. CS: Such an amazing path you’ve taken. Thank you, for sharing some of it with us, Benny. It’s been a delight speaking with you. I hope for all good things in your direction. BM: Thank you, Chuck. It’s been a pleasure talking with you.

Mo’s Pit Barbeque and Ballroom Tuesday - Thursday 12-9 Friday & Saturday 12-9 Sunday Lunch 1-4 Barbeque is a popular cuisine - but from New Orleans to Texas, Kansas City to the Carolinas, you’ll find fans arguing over what’s “best.” When Mo’s Pit Barbeque and Ballroom owner Kevin Morrissey started smoking meat for his barbeque, he did what we who love barbeque consider the only thing to do: figure out what your style is, and then make it the very best it can be. For Morrissey, who started his barbeque catering business several years back with a van and a smoker, it all begins with the meat. Woodsmoked meat (fruit woods, like cherry and apple are the best) is the basis for

barbeque that will keep you coming back for more. “The meat stands on its own,” Morrissey states, with conviction. Morrissey traveled around, catering events, serving and perfecting his barbeque, for several years, until he eventually found a diner location in Cayuga where he based his operations in the summer, and the Finger Lakes Mall which became a winter retreat. But he kept watching for a place to call “home.” Eventually, he found a spot that has a history of its own – while Mo’s Pit Ballroom and Barbeque writes a new chapter. The building was for many years the boarding house for German immigrants working at of Camillus Cutlery, and while Morrissey makes no claims for the exterior of the venue, he’s justifiably proud of its expansive and unique interior. Mo’s Pit Barbeque and Ballroom opened in its present location in April, 2018. “We have a long, long bar and large main dining room,” he says, “but our banquet room —5000 square feet with a dance floor— can accommodate up to 265 cocktail guests, and table seating for 200. So we can handle a large 4 Generations Serving party.” Morrissey says the site has hosted weddings, Syracuse & CNY retirements, graduation parties, high school sports banquets – just about any event that will bring a group together. And of course Mo’s is expert at taking the party to your event location, as catering

remains a mainstay of the business. With local beers, and a full bar, and hours that accommodate the lunch crowd as well as evening diners, Mo’s is a comfortable environment for friends, families, small and large groups. But for Morrissey, it’s definitely about the food. Asked about his menu (after all, sides are a big part of good barbeque!) Morrissey is quick to share with us that everything on the menu is home-made – and he can name the ingredients and why each dish is special and unique to Mo’s. “People ask for corn on the cob,” he explains, recognizing that corn is traditional with barbeque. “We serve it when it’s fresh. There’s nothing like fresh-picked corn from just up the road. We want it fresh and at its peak.” Going back to his certainty that good barbeque is all about good, well-smoked meat, (with three types of sauce at each table), High top dining tables in the bar area Morrissey has also introduced a woodfired pizza from 4-8 on Wednesdays. “Wood-fired pizza just tastes best,” he explains. And the leftover dough, he tells us, will make a staple at his soon-to-be-introduced Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday Happy Hours (with half-priced appetizers from 3-6pm at the bar). “We’ll take that pizza dough and roll it out, and bake it into a flatbread, and serve that along with a menu we’re working on now for our July 1 start.” A quick glance at a very enticing menu will tell you that Mo’s offers more than barbeque, so no matter what your mood —from Burgers to Haddock to Redneck Surf ‘n Turf— something is going to match your appetite. With dishes like Poutine, Catfish Strips, Chicken Spiedies and Salt Potatoes, you’ll get an opportunity to tour the country through cuisine – with a little extra emphasis on southern goodness! And just to complete the picture, in addition to on and off-site catering, banquet events, happy hour specials and great dining, Mo’s offers carry-out as well. That’s hospitality!

Word on the Street by BILL MCCLELLAN

How to Save Humanity There’s nothing worse than a guy with the answer to save the world and like a mighty oak falling alone deep in the woods, no one hears. I am going to lead with the answer. Until this systemic poison is addressed it is positively impossible, (stress “positively impossible”) to form course that not only can restore the finest values ever devised by a people, but literally save the future. The bottom-line with not one iota of peripheral distraction: The bottom line is the grave human weakness of greed for money and power. The seal that holds these weaknesses in place is money in politics. Until this seal is removed power and greed will decide our course. There is no common good. Depending on what takes us out, it is not rhetoric, but fact, that 7 billion or all of us may well die in an easily ignited nuclear disaster with a similar number of deaths attending climate and/or environmental destruction. Our current system simply does not have the built-in integrity vital to the reform needed to save us. For this to be, money and every other form of bribery must be removed American decision making. We are at a juncture where heretofore unimaginable massive international societal reconstruction is an absolute imperative or billions, if not all of us, will die. Study facts regarding the high potential for a nuclear exchange in these torrid times. Study facts showing the gravity and truth of climate change. Study environmental destruction, land over-use, deforestation, plastic pollution, hideous pollution of oceans killing sea life and the plankton and coral reefs that provide half of earths oxygen production. Study poles melting and sea levels rising and the consequence and all the very real results of pollution, resource consumption and climate change in this heavily overpopulated world. Study the false complacency that precedes creeping real danger. A movement to remove bribery must be of the highest urgency. The decisions necessary to protect the common good are massive. This cannot be achieved when a system is in place that forces greed and the worst that humans can be at a time when the best that humans can be is required to save us. To fix this and re-set course we must understand a few vital truths. Along with all

Pasta’s

forms of bribery, the complete repeal of all Campaign Finance Law, not just Citizens United is the answer. There was a wealthy brilliance to Citizens United. It is an insurance policy for wealth to protect and duplicate what was already in place. They provided a false goal so that when Citizens United is removed nothing has changed. Remaining campaign finance law always allowed for the same outcome. Public financing is the answer. The lie of the corrupt is, it is too costly. The truth is, restored integrity will finance public financing many, many, times over. The best that humans can be will be incentivized and will become our leadership. And greatness will be restarted. Money and bribery were the mustard seed that grew into a system with countless gravely damaging variables. From a hideous lobbying system far removed from the common good to a gerrymandered election system far removed from democracy. From nuclear recklessness to anticipated climate devastation. With thousands of public-be-damned greedy corporate regulations bought from our leaders eating away at real freedom and common good. Wrong and evil have been easily purchased from our leaders for decades. Congress has lied to our people. They continue to speak of our founders and our Constitution and our glory as their deeds defame and decimate our pursuit. -What would you call the selling out of your country? In those warm summer months of 1797 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, men who would live forever in infamy, Washington, Hamilton, Adams, Franklin, Jefferson, Hancock and 28 others signed the document that would launch the finest that humans can be: The United States Constitution. Their one great failure was in not providing language and continued on pg 40

We know that barrels were used to age and store beer back in the 1930s, (and even well before that), but by KRISTIN MERRITT what exactly is a barrel-aged brew today? According to craftbeer.com, “A wood- or barrel-aged Beer in barrels was popularized during World War II with beer is any the hit big band tune “Beer Barrel Polka,” performed by the lager, ale or Andrews Sisters in 1939. hybrid beer, either a “Roll out the barrel, we’ll have a barrel of fun traditional Roll out the barrel, we’ve got the blues on the run style or a Zing boom tararrel, ring out a song of good cheer unique Now’s the time to roll the barrel, for the gang’s all here. experimental beer, that has been aged for a period of time in a wooden barrel Zing do da do ding do da-do-do-day or in contact with wood. Even some of our local breweries, such as YouTube for a quick little listen. Buried Acorn, have purchased barrels to use in their brewing process to create beers that impart a unique flavor depending on what was fermented and stored in the barrels previously. It may sound easy, but it’s actually an art-form in and of itself to create a one-of-a-kind barrel-aged brew. As well, good quality barrels themselves are not exactly easy to come by and can be quite expensive to obtain. What type of barrels are used? Well, in addition to the type of wood used, anything really —Wine, Tequila, Bourbon— can be used to infuse a brew. Different combinations of wood and different types of beverages stored in each barrel, along with different manufacturers of each said beverage and their unique recipes gives rise to a vast array of different possibilities when choosing to age a brew in barrels. Using simple mathematics, the different combinations can almost be endless, with an endless number of outcomes as well! In addition, not every type of beer brewed will be a match for aging in barrels, but experimentation can be exceptionally exciting both for brewers Call ahead and consumers. for Barrel-aged brews will therefore always Take-Out be more expensive because they are infinitely more expensive to create and there are limited quantities available. Roll Out the Barrels! continued from pg 20 barrels. This beer is part of New Belgium’s Wood Cellar Reserve series – a collection of rare, small-batch wild and sour ales. The brewery boasts that this beer contains the longest, continuous souring culture in America and once transferred from barrel to bottle it will continue to develop in the bottle for up to 5 years. Oscar has lovely and distinct blackberry notes, oak from the barrels itself, with a pucker-finish. Wonderfully unique and delicious! I was able to taste this on draft at a New Belgium tap-takeover at The Evergreen in downtown Syracuse this past April. It can be found at various places throughout the US, including Texas, Georgia & Oregon, so stick this one on your radar during your travels this summer. Bourbon Barrels – My Pick: Bourbon Barrel Aged Dragonslayer 2018 by Middle Ages Brewing, Syracuse, NY. (11.7% ABV) As one of our Mas Agave hometown hero breweries, Middle Ages also has Bourbon Barrel Aged Dragonslayer barrel-aged brew producing 2018 capabilities and they have perfected their art and continue to deliver year after year. This stout has a hefty alcohol content, but drinks quite smooth. It’s warming with prevalent bourbon notes and hints of dark fruits up front, but then moves on to chocolate notes and finishes with coffee flavors. Truly mouth-wateringly complex! Middle Ages states that they use large amounts of chocolate, roasted barley, wheat and caramalt to brew the beer, then after fermentation it is transferred to Heaven Hill bourbon barrels where it is aged for 10 months. The barrels lend flavors of charred oak, vanilla, and of course, bourbon. A great second choice would be Barrel-Aged 4Beans by Sixpoint Brewery, Brooklyn, NY (11% ABV) with it’s LOADS of vanilla. Roll Out the Barrels! continued from pg 22 Brandy Barrels – My Pick: Double Barrel Dubbel by Brewery Ommegang, Cooperstown, NY (9.9% ABV). Ommegang takes its Abbey Dubbel craft beer and ages it for 6 months in both bourbon and brandy casks. Because it’s a blend of two barrels, there are layers and complexities throughout each sip. Dark fruits dominate – Raisin notes are what I straight up tasted, but you also might find other notes of both caramel and molasses. It is quite boozy. Tequila Barrels – My Pick: Más Agave by Founders Brewing Co., Grand Rapids, MI. (10% ABV). This Gose tastes like a very strong margarita! Lots of lime throughout. Founders brewed this beer with agave, lime and sea salt, then aged the beer in tequila barrels for an unspecified length of time. A great beer to have on a hot summer’s day or complimenting your Taco Tuesday plans! p.s. you should be able to find this at Wegmans! Rum Barrels – My Pick: Rum Barrel Aged Pumking by Southern Tier Brewing Company, Lakewood, NY (13.4% ABV). Interestingly enough, you’ll find that rum barrels are great agers of pumpkin beers! (Something to look forward to as summer turns into fall!) The rum is prevalent, compliments the pumpkin, is totally enjoyable, and goes down REALLY easy after a few sips. With such a high ABV, you’ll want to pace yourself with this one. A good second choice, (and is another pumpkin beer!) is Roadsmary’s Baby by Two Roads Brewing Company, Stratford, CT (6.8% ABV).

Preternatural Cuvee

Wine Barrels – My Pick: Preternatural Cuvée 3 by Stillwater Artisanal, Brooklyn, NY (8.8% ABV). There are actually 5 different brews in the series, all labeled by number. Number 3 was my favorite. This is a barrel-aged farmhouse ale brewed with cabernet sauvignon, sauvignon blanc, and viognier grapes, then aged for 3 years in French, Hungarian, and American oak barrels. It is unbelievably tasty. It drinks much like a fine white wine would – it was oaky but with a very dry finish. This is a very limited series that I was able to try at Branching Out Bottle Shop’s in-store tasting event this past March. Keep your eyes peeled for more upcoming tasting events with this excellent small business located in Township 5 Camillus. A great second choice would be Ramble on Rose by High Water Brewing, Lodi, CA (6% ABV) – this unique brew is aged in wine barrels for 12 months with blueberries, rose buds, rosehips and pink peppercorns. It’s sour, complex, and the rosehips lend a distinct flavor! Currently, I also have another wine-barreled beer on deck at home – Mockery Brewing Company’s Russian Imperial Stout from Denver, CO (12.7% ABV). I received this beer in a trade with a friend in Colorado, so it’s not likely to be found around these parts. This stout is aged in cabernet wine barrels for 14 months and the brewers describe it as having flavors of “bright red wine grape notes that mingle with dried cherries, dark chocolate, and African berry forward coffee.” I’m pretty psyched to crack this open someday soon! (and I feel very lucky to have beer-loving friends in far-off places!) I should also mention that many barrel-aged brews can, in fact, be cellared (remember, consistently dark and cool – 50-55°F!) and will continue to age gracefully. A suggestion is to purchase two or more barrel-aged beers, drink one now, and then open the second a year later to see how the beer has continued to develop and mature. Roll out those barrel-aged beers, friends! Cheers!

Computers & the Web by NANCY ROBERTS

The New Computer Adventure Sooner or later you will need a new computer. Whether some component begins to fail, or you simply need “bigger, better, faster,” or you just in the mood for some more updated, you will face the biggest problem of replacing a computer: getting all your stuff moved from here to there. Actually, the problem of data has long since been conquered —and if your storage looks like the basement or attic rather than a neatly equipped kitchen, you’re not alone— but it’s a problem all of us should identify and address now, while the machine we’re using is still working properly. Get your data moved to the cloud. Identify it in proper folders, and clear out un-needed data periodically. But as long as the files you need and want are stored somewhere other than on your laptop or desktop, you will have access to them no matter what machine you use. One of the best features of cloud storage is that it can be accessed wherever you are, and on whatever machine you’re using. External hard drives with multiple backups are

all well and good, but like any form of technology they can fail or get damaged. Cloud storage is multiply redundant (though I admit my most precious files are kept both locally and on the cloud; and if the file is highly confidential, multiple local copies are my preference), which handles much of the back-up worry for you. None of this, however, solves the problem of your programs. In another column, I sang the praises of Google’s suite of online basic office programs, and it bears repeating here that it’s more than handy to know that you can write a document, create a spreadsheet, even do some basic design or create a set of slides all online, and without requiring any software loaded onto your desktop. But for any programs you may have that are proprietary and essential to your work (or play), the day will probably come when you have to plan how to recreate your working environment on a new computer. And many of us will also have collected little applications along the way that we find useful and would miss if we didn’t have them available. The ideal way to set up your new computer so that it’s similar to your old computer is to keep track of your software installations: what programs you have, where you stored the download (or disks!), and the activation key information. In some cases, in order to use the same exact software and activation key, you’ll need to deactivate it on your old machine before activating it on the new one. In any event, keeping track of what you have and how to access it and install it on your new computer makes the job much easier. Transferring the software is trickier. On a PC, you can’t simply drag and drop a piece of software from one machine to another, or even access it once you’ve copied the files required to run the software. You have to

Exercise & Fitness by JENNIFER NASTASI GUZELAK

Eat According to Your Activity Level Most of us have heard the phrase “Eat According to Your Activity Level,” but what EXACTLY does that mean? This can be a bit misleading because some of us need more calories than others and there are so many factors to take into consideration. We need to look at food as fuel! Food serves as an energy source to keep us going throughout the day. Our bodies burn calories doing normal daily activities, such as, breathing, sweating, sleeping and sitting. Doing extra activities like biking, running, hiking, weight lifting, dancing, etc. burns extra calories. However, it’s common that a person will over estimate how many calories they burned and subsequently overshoot how many calories they actually need. If you’re thinking, “I jogged 20 minutes on the treadmill, I can afford to eat that ice cream after dinner,” think again. A 20-minute jog may burn around 180-200 calories, depending how fast you are jogging. That bowl of ice cream can add up to over 300 calories. Essentially, the calories you burned were put right back into your body – plus a few more.

Tracking Your Food and Calorie Intake

breakdown of carbs, proteins and fat) during the day. In addition, it shows your remaining recommended intake and the number of calories you’ve burned by exercising.

What is Energy Balance?

Energy is another word for “calories.” Your energy balance is the balance of calories consumed through eating and drinking compared to calories burned through physical activity. What you eat and drink is ENERGY IN. What you burn through physical activity is ENERGY OUT. You burn a certain number of calories just by breathing air and digesting food. You also burn a certain number of calories (ENERGY OUT) through your daily routine. Eating just 150 calories more a day than you burn can lead to an extra 5 pounds over 6 months. That’s a gain of 10 pounds a year. Frightening, isn’t it?

How Many Calories Should You Eat?

Research shows that people who log calories lose more weight and are more likely to keep the weight off in the long run. These days, counting calories is very easy. There are In dietary terms, calories are the amount of energy that a food provides. This prevents you from buying one copy of an expensive piece of software and then installing it on all your friends’ and families’ computers. And finally —and in some ways, most challenging— is all the settings and preferences that you have, over probably years, adopted as you used your computer day to day. Faced with all of these issues – data, software, and settings – you may want to consider something called “transfer software.” For somewhere in the neighborhood of $50, you can download a piece of software that will, through your network, allow you to create a working copy

Eat According to Your Activity Level continued from pg 26 The type and amount of food we eat determine how many calories we consume. How and when we eat can also make a difference, as the body uses energy differently throughout the day. Our body’s energy use will depend on how active we are, how efficiently our body uses the energy, and our age. According to the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, women are likely to need between 1,600 and 2,400 calories a day, and men from 2,000 to 3,000. However, this depends on their age, size, height, lifestyle, overall health, and activity level.

Food Choice

Keeping calorie intake within certain limits will not ensure you are eating a healthy diet, as different foods have different effects on the body. After consuming carbohydrates, insulin levels will rise significantly more compared with eating fats or protein. Some carbs in particular get into the bloodstream in the form of sugar, or glucose, much faster than others. Refined flour is a fast carb, while legumes are slower. Slow-release carbs are better for body weight control and overall health than fast carbs. A 500-calorie meal of fish, a salad, and some olive oil, followed by fruit, is healthier and will keep you satisfied much longer than a 500-calorie snack with no nutritional value. To work out how many calories you need, you need to know your basal metabolic rate and an activity factor.

Basal metabolic rate

One useful way of estimating BMR is the Mifflin-St. Jeor equation: Men: 10 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) - 5 x age (y) + 5 Women: 10 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) - 5 x age (y) - 161

Activity factor

After calculating the BMR, multiply the result with an activity factor: • Sedentary lifestyle: If you do very little or no exercise at all, your daily calorie requirement is BMR x 1.2.

• Slightly active lifestyle: If you do light exercise between one and three times a week, your daily calorie requirement is BMR x 1.375. • Moderately active lifestyle: If you do moderate exercise three to five times a week, your daily calorie requirement is BMR x 1.55. • Active lifestyle: If you do intensive exercise six to seven times per week, your daily calorie requirement is BMR x 1.725. • Very active lifestyle: If you do very intensive exercise twice a day, with extra heavy workouts, your daily calorie requirement is BMR x 1.9. This will give a rough idea of the daily calorie intake you need to keep your body weight where it is. The result is still not perfect, as the equation does not take into account the ratio of muscle to fat. A very muscular person needs more calories, even when resting.

As with calories requirements, an ideal body weight depends on several factors, including age, sex, bone density, muscle-fat ratio, and height.

Waist-hip ratio

Researchers have found that many people whose waist circumference is less than half their height have a longer life expectancy. People with a smaller waist to height size have been found to have a lower risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and other health conditions that are related to obesity. An adult male who is 6 feet (183 cm) tall should have a waist that does not exceed 36 inches (91 cm). An adult female who is 5 feet 4 inches (163 cm) tall should have a waist that does not exceed 32 inches (81 cm). To measure the waist, measure half-way between the lower rib and the pelvic bone at the hip.

In Conclusion:

Remember, counting calories is not just a matter of what we eat, but how much we burn, too. More important than counting calories is to eat a well-balanced diet that you can sustain long-term! Stay physically active and balance calories according to your activity level. Do your best to make healthy lifestyle choices and I promise you will be a huge success. Good luck to you! My Mind To Yours

by DEBRA MERRYWEATHER

Speaking of Histories Individuals, families, communities, nations, cultures and cultures within nations all have historical summaries and timelines that guide their thinking and belief. Every belief we hold connects to something we were told, read, saw, experienced and/or any combination thereof. There is much new research about cognition, neural connectivity, and memory all of which serve as building blocks of history: personal and collective. Studying brain research won’t heal a fractured brain or disarranged historical (episodic) memory. However, knowing how one’s general neurology works can improve one’s chances of personal self-regulation and autonomy going forward. We all start off in life needing food. Neurons that fire together wire together. A person whose first cries for food are met might grow up to believe that he or she has power over events and outcomes. Someone whose cries go unanswered will likely experience anxiety and, feeling helpless, grow up to credit/blame outside forces for everything. It should be a given that outside forces always shape us before we have any power to shape ourselves, still, many of us believe in an American Dream in which all individuals are autonomous and personally responsible for all personal outcomes even amid deprivation and chaos.

The early new world colonists’ emotional self-regulation and autonomy developed in context. The Fourth of July brings fireworks, sparklers and flag waving celebrating America’s Declaration of Independence from England and its taxation without representation. We don’t hear as much that some of today’s socioeconomic issues connect back to those of England, the small, populous island kingdom whose need for food, markets and resources created an empire upon which, in the past, the sun never set. Over a century after the first Englishmen and women sailed to, and/or were deposited on, the new world’s shores to, variously, escape London’s licentiousness, reduce London’s overpopulation, or labor as indentured servants growing tobacco, the more educated and successful colonials began to chafe under England’s use and abuse of its colonial subjects. Lin-Manuel’s “Hamilton” imparts some of the history within US history, with the story’s historical characters reflecting the same values we see in conflict today. Then and now,

power seeks to compel loyalty. In “You’ll be Back,” a hurt King George III sings to his colonists that he will “send a fully armed battalion” and “kill your friends and family to remind you of my love.” I often reflect on history and it on me. In 1492, Spain financed Italian navigator Christopher Columbus’s attempt to reach India via the Atlantic. In his confusion, Columbus referred to the indigenous residents of this newly “discovered” world as Indians. Then and now, we learn as we go. America is named for mapmaker Amerigo Vespucci. Our nation claims to have no class system, but there are always people trying to put other people “in their places.” There is, or should be, logic to how we think, and, in our always multicultural USA, we learn how to think and act amid mixed signals. My own speech patterns developed in a working-class neighborhood where I attended a parochial school which taught the “King’s English.” I learned that I must not end a sentence with a preposition, but found myself accused, when I followed this rule in casual conversation, of displaying an attitude up with which others did not want to put. Who do you think you are, anyway? Who are we? I have heard South Americans and Canadians express both amusement and irritation that US Americans see themselves alone as “American.” Historical placards in Ontario not far from the 1000 Island Bridge describe “us” not as the US, but as “rebels.” Fort Henry in Kingston was built in 1812 in loyal colonial Canada to protect the Royal Naval Dockyards on Lake Ontario from us, and to keep the St. Lawrence River open and safe from us for shipping to Canadian river ports to of the east. The War of 1812 lasted until 1815. The “Star Spangled Banner” commemorates not the American Revolution, but rather, a US victory over Britain’s attack of Baltimore Harbor in 1814. Lawyer Francis Scott Key wrote the poem The Defence of Fort M’Henry when he saw the flag, with 15 stars and stripes at the time, still flying after the battle. The lyrics set to music became our national anthem. During the War of 1812, Fort Ontario in Oswego served as a supply source for the US Naval Base at Sackets Harbor. Fort Ontario’s website states that the first white man arrived in Oswego in 1653. The British first built the fort in 1755. The American independence fighters destroyed the fort in 1778; the British rebuilt the fort when they reoccupied Oswego in 1782. In 1796, the British left Oswego, turning the fort over to the United States. In 1944, Fort Ontario served as a temporary refuge for 982 European Jews who successfully fled the Nazis. Many such seekers found no such refuge. The Safe Haven Museum at Fort Ontario provides some of the sad history of that time. Fort Ontario is named for one of the Five Nations of the original Iroquois Confederacy or Haudenosaunee: the Mohawk, the Oneida, the Onondaga, the Cayuga, and the Seneca. In 1722, the Tuscarora joined the confederacy which then became known as the Six Nations. Some history suggests that Norse explorer Leif Erickson established a Viking settlement in Newfoundland 500 years before Columbus sailed the Atlantic. We’re all here now.

Preventive Medicine by DR. BARRY

Sugar Substitute Skulduggery There is an additive that was recently approved by the FDA that you should know about. Its industrial name is E951. The plan is to include it in over 6,000 products. It will be consumed by millions of people daily. It will likely be added to soft drinks, chewing gum, candy, desserts, yogurt as well as pharmaceuticals, in particular, syrups and antibiotics for children. I first became interested in this additive because it has known adverse effects on the biome and you know how seriously I have been researching the importance of the bugs in your gut. Unfortunately E951 directly kills many of the bugs in your gut and adversely affects the ratio of Bacteroides and Firmicutes. You want more Bacteroides and less Firmicutes and E951 does just the opposite and that’s not good for you and your health. This is well-documented in the scientific literature. When this additive was approved in Europe, there were immediate reports to their version of the FDA, which included: migraines, change in vision, nausea and vomiting, trouble

sleeping, change in heart rate, abdominal pain, joint pain, depression, memory loss, seizures and brain tumors. That’s right brain tumors. Adverse reactions to E951 accounted for more than 75% of that agencies complaints involving a food additive! E951 is made up of two main ingredients combined with a methyl ester. This methyl ester breaks down to methanol in the body. Methanol is grain alcohol. That’s the stuff that makes you go blind if you drink too much of it. This methanol, in turn, is converted to formaldehyde in the body. That’s right … formaldehyde. According to the American Cancer Society various agencies including National Toxicology Project, The International Agency for Research on Cancer, The EPA and The National Cancer Institute all list formaldehyde as a known or likely carcinogen. Furthermore one of the main ingredients is well-known to be neurotoxic. So, there are plenty of reported side effects: breakdown products that are known to cause cancer, ingredients known to be neurotoxic, adverse effects on the gut biome, etc. Who needs this product in the USA? The pharmaceutical company reported 60 studies to evaluate the safety of E951. All 60 studies found no problem with the drug whatsoever. However, 93 independent studies were done and a problem was found 80% of the time. The drug company tried for years to get E951 approved. The science was so sloppy that the FDA took the rare step of asking the US attorney in Chicago to investigate the pharmaceutical company for its potentially illegal actions. The long list of very shoddy and very suspicious activity of the drug company can be found on the arizonaadvancedmedicine.com website. Senator Edward Kennedy at the April 8, 1976 hearings before the Senate Subcommittee on Labor and Public Welfare stated: “The extensive nature of the almost unbelievable range of abuses discovered by the FDA on several major products is profoundly disturbing.” So how does a drug whose research contained an unbelievable range of abuses get continued on pg 38

Sugar Substitute Skulduggery continued from pg 34 approval? Well, the FDA unanimously rejected the application for approval of E951 but when the President was elected, he appointed a new FDA commissioner who overruled the objections of his scientists. The head of the drug company went to work for the president on his transition team. How’s that for political skulduggery? Furthermore, this same commissioner went to work for the same drug company at the end of his tenure at the FDA. So a drug, E951, with very poor scientific background, with reported toxicity, with known carcinogens as a by product of its breakdown in the body is unleashed on an unsuspecting and trusting public and will be incorporated into thousands of products used by almost every American. Now for the reveal … E951 was actually approved in 1981! The President was Ronald Reagan. The head of the drug company was Donald Rumsfeld and the drug company was G.D.Searle. The FDA commissioner was Arthur H. Hayes who joined Searle’s public relations agency (Burson-Marsteller) as a senior medical advisor immediately after leaving the FDA (in 1983). You know E951 by its commercial name: Aspartame or Nutrasweet. Now you know the rest of the story. If you really check out the details of the science you will never touch diet soda or a product containing Nutrasweet / Aspartame again. It does break down to methanol which turns into formaldehyde. It does trash your microbiome. It has indeed been the most reported food additive to the FDA. Research does suggest it causes brain damage and brain tumors. AVOID IT IN ALL ITS FORMS. Soda is the low hanging fruit of improving your health. Whether it’s the truly awful high fructose corn syrup found in regular soda or Nutrasweet in diet soda … you don’t need either one. Both are clearly bad for you and have nothing nutritionally redeeming about them. Just say no to soda and diet soda. Until next month … get well … stay well. (ed. Setting Up Saratoga continued from pg 8 Want another reason to go to Saratoga Race Course this Summer? Some days it’s only a few bucks to get in for the whole day of racing. Technically, each race is a sporting event in my mind. So, you may pay $5 and see 10-12 races. 50 cents for a sporting event, not bad. Oh, and by the way, when you walk in, grab a spot, your spot, your group’s spot to hang out all day. Maybe a picnic table area or the space by Dunkin Donuts. Either way, have your territory and bring your lawn chairs because you can go back and forth from the track to your hangout spot without worry. And on occasion, you can watch a race or two on the monitor if that’s your thing. Another awesome perk of horse racing is the close proximity you have to the jockeys. After races, the jockeys walk back to the silk area (their uniforms) and will mingle with fans, sign autographs and exchange thoughts on the race. Sorry, but you can’t exactly do that right after a Patriots game with Tom Brady or a Yankees game with Aaron Judge. And then, of course, hit Broadway for a nice meal and some drinks before the trip home. Downtown Saratoga is simply gorgeous. Or, you could be lucky enough to hit SPAC for a concert during track season. This year, Saratoga Race Track opens a week early and Dave Matthews Band is playing as well (July 11 being opening day and then DMB and races on July 12 and 13). ‘Special for me, horse racing opening in Saratoga and my 59th and 60th DMB shows. Larry Latour adds: “Saratoga is much more than racing, however. Four and/or Five-star hotels dot the city as well as a plethora of more affordable establishments throughout the region for the budget minded. A myriad of top class dining can be found as well as several city blocks of quaint shopping venues. For those who can’t get enough action during the daytime, the Saratoga Harness track runs mostly at night and is complete with a casino and excellent hotel accommodations onsite. A short 25 mile drive North to Lake George brings multiple entertainment opportunities for the young and old alike. Clearly, Saratoga and the surrounding region is worthy of being considered ‘The Summer Place To Be.’” As far as the competition this year, look for any number of 3-year-old horses to compete from the Triple Crown races in one of the most wide-open racing years ever. From Tacitus to Code of Honor to Sir Winston (Belmont Stakes winner) to Joevia to Country House (Kentucky Derby winner thanks to disqualification) to War of Will to Game Winner to a bunch of others, the competition should be stellar. The Capital Region has a host of colleges, a minor league baseball team and a few other things and New York City and Boston sports teams and other cities are varied in terms of support. What does that mean? Horse racing is the “collective” pro sport that people gravitate to, which makes it even more special. “Saratoga Race Course is unlike any other sporting venue in the country,” says Kevin Rich, Town

caused my friend Mike Thompson to be blown to pieces and rain over the jungle floor in Vietnam, yet not one would risk a career change to undertake the measure that can save not only our land but cause the return of the values that may save mankind. Leaders (sic) spend their time raising money to keep their donors in power. Leaders (sic) then act as proxy leaders for their donors. In terms of their own interests and desires, the donor gets what they want as if they were the representative. Congress governs more in keeping with the more often than not meaningless algorithm of media computers. There are no leaders. No common good priorities. -Just a mass of self-interest. No heroes. Issues have no meaningful champions. They tell themselves this is not true. It is true. I am in my 70’s. Infrastructure has crumbled. No one has touched immigration reform in any meaningful way. Banks collapse and wages deplete as greed feeds and people suffer and we race toward the 3rd world. Congress lives and breathes ignoring all that is vital to us and attends all that is vital to the wealthy. This is where Trump came from. He is a middle finger. And likely, the first highly consequential step toward serious revolt … because of Congress. It is about values. It is about disgrace. You do not sell the decisions that run 325 million American lives. American values, Climate Change, Nuclear Recklessness, Immigration reform, Lobbying Reform, Campaign Finance Reform, the Quality of Infrastructure, the end of Gerrymandering, Health Care and Retirement Solutions, Approach to Debt, and the Oversight of the Mighty are just a few matters left unattended for decades. All rooted in the value sucking power of bribery. Turn on the news, see how long you have to wait before the many matters that endanger humanity are meaningfully mentioned. Bring a lot of popcorn. American Leadership is not what most Americans think. In truth it is a group of sycophants ruled by the wealthy that won the anti-trust and monopoly battles of President’s Wilson and the Roosevelts. They discovered bribery works. The Congress, the Supreme Court and the President, today, are better defined as sycophantic proxies for the course that the Corporate World desires. Examples are endless. I will leave you with the ultimate of hideous. One industry is being allowed to destroy earth: Oil. If you don’t believe in Climate Change would you at least agree that there is maybe a 20% chance you may wrong. Are you willing to roll the dice on humanity with 1 in 5 odds? Why do we allow a few thousand greedy executives to gamble with our existence? Remedy requires massive change. -Change, not harm. The pursuit of a clean and wholesome planet is not harm. It is the pursuit of protecting human life. It is an awesome opportunity for jobs and greatness and wholesome life for all. Oil, greedy, polluting, uncaring oil, wants you to believe otherwise. Even when death is underway and billions more may die as Bangladesh, and New York City, and Miami disappear into the sea. The battle to save our world cannot winning 6 Mets tickets! be fought in a leadership environment bought by the polluters. The end of money in politics must be pursued with the greatest of all urgency and followed by a generation of fighters that own their souls. This battle must be fought with greatness on levels never before seen. Those that really care have read this far. I urge anyone, someone, many of you, to copy this article and send it to the 535 in our Congress and every news outlet you think of or find. It would take a day. Just a few of us may save the world. Otherwise the mighty oak is falling alone deep in the woods and no one hears.

How to Save Humanity continued from pg 18 adhering principles to contain the worst and most common of all human weaknesses – greed and lust for Money and Power. Both of which historically have been absent a containing force, and throughout time have rampantly degraded the pursuit of human fairness. Our Founding Fathers gave us a noble guide; a Constitution reflecting equality, compassion, fairness, and justice for all people. It was the finest effort in human history intended to pursue a land of fairness, free of tyranny and the impoverishing greed of the few. The Constitutional Convention took place from May 25, to September 17, 1797. They grappled with the course and how one course would affect the other. In the end they developed a pursuit of the finest kind. Mind you, it was the pursuit that was of the finest order, not in the finest times. It was an era of slavery and racist mindset. Blacks were designated as 3/5 of a person. We had a long way to go. Wisdom of the finest kind “in the era,” did prevail, allowing the course to be set for equality and justice to evolve into the finest land ever known to mankind. As a gentle breeze blows amidst the summer heat among the White Crosses at Arlington National Cemetery, just across the Potomac River, cowards of the worst order, preside over the land these hallowed dead loved and gave their lives for. With shameful obsequious cowardice of the highest order, daily on display, they sell the finest pursuit known to man to the smart greedy few. The Sons and Daughters that lie under the White Crosses weep as the values and pursuit of the land they died for are flagrantly shamed and sold. Sold by Men and Women who allow and perpetuate a system that buys their souls and very literally sells you out. Men and Women that do not understand the mindset of those that pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor. They are not worthy of those they send to die and they are not worthy of why they die. Sold iers fight not to die, but to risk their lives for all of us, for family, and for a country engaged in the pursuit of human-values of the finest kind. -The finest of all pursuits. Not one of the 435 in the House of Representatives and not one of the 100 in the United States Senate has stood up and made the elimination of bribery in campaign finance, in keeping with developing a system free of monied coercion, their mantra and their mission. They know this to be the answer. Yet, this pursuit has risk. Our leaders work in a system that was re-designed by wealth to incite and exploit their cowardice and they so shamefully comply. Our system was manipulated by wealth, designed so that the strength of greed and power overwhelms values. What baffles me is how Congress

Tales from the Vine

by KATHERINE CASSANDRACHASE HARRINGTON

Rain, Rain Go Away To say it’s been a wet start to the growing season is an understatement. A few years ago we were begging for rain, and this year we’re begging it to stop! So that poses the question: how do the vines feel about all this rain? April marked the first month that we were mostly frost-free, which made for a busy month. Grapes needed to be tied, trellises needed to be worked on, and herbicides needed to be applied. The rain made these already not fun projects even less entertaining. Weed control became the most problematic as the alternating rain/sun/rain/sun had made everything grow like crazy, mixed with a mucky mess in the vineyards. The end of the month is when the grape buds began to come out of their dormancy. Thankfully, Mother Nature didn’t throw the grape growers any curve balls with random frosts. Coming into May, the weekly reports had still been wet. For most varieties, bud break had officially occurred and with some of the early breaking varieties, small leaves could be seen. Early in the month, we had some colder days and nights, which wasn’t very encouraging for growth. There was a week mid-May that was mostly dry that allowed the vineyard teams to apply more of the early season protective sprays and even get some mowing done between the rows. They were also able to continue with “spot sprays” for more weed control beneath the vines. We don’t want any weeds stealing the nutrients from our next potential bottle of favorite wine! And now we’re into June, which was also, you guessed it, wet. There hasn’t been much more than a 4 day break from the rain since the snow melted. The good news? The rainfall and relatively mild temperatures have created ideal conditions for the vine growth, but this also means that the protective sprays that cover the new growth are needed regularly. The irony is that it’s hard to keep the spray on the vines while it’s continuously raining, so the weather has to be watched very carefully and application needs to be strategic to allow ‘drying time.’ Now is also a good time to thin out the centers of the vines, removing unwanted or unneeded growth. Doing this helps with disease control and also allows the canes that weren’t removed to develop the most fruitful buds possible. They also remove all the unwanted growth from the trunk and base of the vines, which is called suckering. You’ll even notice ‘sucker’s at the base of regular trees and bushes. Though we’re sick of the rain —vineyard workers and ‘regular folks’ alike— the vines are loving the moisture, especially as the weather is progressively getting warmer. They’re growing at a rapid pace, thus resulting in the catch wires needing to be raised, which support the new growth vertically. This positions the new growth to give it better exposure to the sun and air movement, which helps the grape clusters as they develop and mature. They’re also starting to bloom. They’re sometimes hard to notice, but the grape buds do flower. They’re self-pollinating, so the bees aren’t necessary, but they’re necessary for the bees. Overall, the rain hasn’t had too much of a negative effect, besides the overall sogginess of the vineyard workers. At this point, it does appear that the growing season, measured by growing degree days, is somewhat behind a “normal” growing season. Though in my opinion, ‘somewhat behind’ is far better than ‘very behind.’

I Am Mother

Regardless of its genre or plot, any time a movie limits its cast list to single digits, it’s a gamble. The further you reduce the number, the more daring the production becomes. By limiting the setting to a central location exacerbates this, leaving it up to the screenwriter, director, and performers to keep the audience’s attention despite the depleted resources. Most recently, EX MACHINA did this to perfection, and in 2010, the profoundly underrated Ryan Reynold’s drama BURIED proved that there were no limitations on to what the most minimalist of casts and settings could do.
