Sounds Of Syracuse

by Chuck Schiele

Christopher Ames Brings Us Outside the Machine Christopher Ames qualifies as one of the area’s true triple threat musicians, possessing tip-top chops as a singer, guitarist and writer. Throw in a natural knack for wit and humor in his onstage banter and the result is a complete, compelling artist. And in a world that has become replete with short attention spans, disinformation, ruled largely in the name of self interest, Christopher Ame’s new release, Outside the Machine, cuts right through the din and nonsense of a collective global cacophony with a relevant, empathetic and human message. There is something about songs that are written by someone who has the strength to be vulnerable in the honesty required to write material that is useful to a listener – by writing music that makes one think about their own lives. This is one of those albums. Besides that, it rocks.

It’s a guitar-driven rock sound that demonstrates loyalty to Chris’ influences spanning a range of influences from power pop to a 90’s rock edge, per this guitarist’s point of view in a way that manages to be fun. It sounds good played loud, so, well, you know. Chuck Schiele: Congratulations, Chris. You’ve got a new album out. Life Outside the Machine. How would you describe the sound on this outing? Christopher Ames: Musically, we wanted this album to pick up where Emotional Tattoo left off – guitar heavy and delving more into our rock roots. I am a writer who wears his influences on his sleeve so I can listen through and hear all the great bands who made a mark on me in their music. And I am just nerd enough to bore the curious with a line by line explanation should anyone corner me. CS: Great, provocative title. I know you enough to know that you rely on and work from strong inspirations. Tell us about this one. CA: I started working on the initial songs in 2019 and the title of the album came to mind pretty early. The last record (2018’s Emotional Tattoo) dealt with some heavy subjects including a divorce and the death of my son and so I was already in pretty deep water. On top of that, we were in the middle of the Trump administration so everything was already feeling pretty dystopian. So, I dove into it and got ahold of all things dystopian – the books, the TV shows, the rock opera LP’s – sort of like a Dadaist poem, I took bits and pieces out of each, shook them up in my head, and sprinkled them throughout the lyrics on the record. A lot of people have asked me what the Machine is and I think it is going to be different for each listener. It could be relational, familial, political, ideological, theological... we tried hard to be both vague and specific on the album – leaving hints, Easter eggs if you will, so I have specific thoughts on the Machine for me, but unlike my writing when I was younger, I can let the results and meanings rest in the hands of the listener and not have to chart it out to get them to my end. The joke with the guys in the band is that I always promise the next record won’t be a concept album and then a theme or a concept forms. This record is not a strict concept album in the sense that there is a tangible storyline and characters. But at the same time, it is not a collection of songs around a theme either because there is a motion from one place to another across the songs. I would say it is a ‘conceptual album.’ CS: Heh, I must admit that when you approached me with your new work, my first thought was, “I wonder what Christopher’s concept will be this time.” Inspired people have strong visions by practical means and you’re one of them. This is what concepting is. I can also tell – or suspect anyway – that you edit a lot in your writing process. Cool. As a songwriter, do you feel that these times are especially ripe for subject matter? CA: I do because events are happening so fast and so bluntly in our faces via social media and the 24 hour news cycle. There are so many machines all around us! Those things you once thought provided you with structure and balance can upend in one moment or crisis or tragedy and all of a sudden you find yourself on the outs with your

Outside the Machine continued from pg 3 own people or family or community. Songs help us deal with and make sense of that – they are definitely therapy for me as a writer. CS: Who’s in the band? CA: Dan E. Clausen on Drums, Jabare Mckinstry on Bass and myself on Guitars and Vocals. We had several guests come in and play on the album – the mighty Bob Halligan Jr. played keys on ‘In The Afters’ and Mark Westers from the Barndogs dropped some Harrison slide on the song ‘10 Seconds Either Way,’ just to name two. CS: With the fresh release, I imagine you have a steady summer scheduled to support it? CA: You would think so, but this record represents more of a bookend for the band. Both Dan and Jabare had life opportunities that took them out of Syracuse. We literally finished recording the basic tracks on a Saturday and by the following weekend, the boys had left town – one to the east and one to the west! They did make it back the weekend the album was released and we played a Release Show at the Cafe@407 in Liverpool. That was a great night and super special as the Cafe was the first place CAB ever played back in 2007. So, a bookend record and a bookend show. I am trying to coax them both back this summer to possibly make our first ever music video for one of the tracks. CS: What were some of the challenges in making this album? CA: For me the challenge was two fold. Knowing that the guys were leaving was always in the back of my mind and heart and this was our moment to make our statement. The other challenge is just about

going beyond where you’ve gone before. Not being safe and not being afraid to let the songs lead, trusting your own vision and skills and jumping without a net. CS: I’m curious to know what guitars and rigs you used? CA: I played equal parts Telecaster and Les Paul on this record. A Tele outfitted with Phat Cat P90’s and my red Les Paul Standard. I blame the drummer for influencing me towards Les Paul’s. Also, there is plenty of big, thick acoustic guitar on rhythm – a couple of different 6 strings and a 12 string here and there. Very few pedals this time around, just a mix of signals through a BadCat and a 5150.

CS: Who recorded, engineered, produced the project? CA: The album was recorded and mixed at More Sound. Jocko Randall was Engineer and he co-Produced with the band. He is so great to work with because he has a vast musical knowledge that is different from mine and because he was not up to his eyeballs in the songs the way we were, he could hear them with fresh ears and no baggage. Sometimes he talked me out of ideas that were suspect, but usually he talked me into trusting my vision for the record. CS: I am purposely refraining from offering my opinion as to let the artist and music speak for itself, but, yeah: I really dig it. I for one appreciate the intelligence – which is immediately obvious – permeating the lyric as well as the musical choices you make throughout the album. It’s tough being an artist reflecting on your own work sometimes. How do you feel about the turnout? CA: I can honestly say for myself that this is the best album I have been part of to date – from the writing to the recording and seeing the dream/vision fulfilled. I am completely satisfied with it. Seeing the band go on indefinite hiatus sucks, but if we have to – this is a great final statement. CS: How do we stay in touch with you and your music? CA: The usual suspects – our website is www.christopheramesband.com and you can follow us on Facebook. The album is available all over the place for download and streaming – hit us up on Spotify and put it on Endless Loop... see what I did there?

The Waterfront Tavern It’s finally summer and everyone knows being on the water on a sunny summer day just hits differently! Now is the perfect time to stare at the water, soak in that sunshine, and while you’re at it, enjoy some ice cold bevies and awesome food! If your asking “where can I make this happen?” there is only one answer – The Waterfront Tavern! The Waterfront, a favorite hangout of all Central New Yorkers, is conveniently located at 6 U.S. 11, Central Square (right over the Brewerton Bridge).

With their beautiful waterfront location, patrons can get to The Waterfront in a variety of ways: drive, take your motorcycle or even come by boat. Best of all, there is plenty of dockage to accommodate tons of boats! At The Waterfront you can enjoy great food, cold drinks, and the beautiful scenery seven days a week! There is just something special about The Waterfront. To start, it is absolutely the BEST place to watch the fireworks (on July 3rd this year). They also have daily specials (including my favorite soft pretzels with homemade cheese sauce.) The Waterfront has some amazing weekly specials that you won’t want to miss. Come by on Tuesday for their awesome deals on burgers and fries all day long! Wednesday is wing night where they offer half priced wings (which pair great with ice cold beer and sunshine!) If clams are your jam then you won’t want to miss Thursday’s little neck steamed clams special at just $9.99 a dozen! Be sure to visit their website or Facebook page so that you can see an up to date listing of all of their upcoming entertainment dates (pretty much every weekend all summer) because you won’t want to miss your favorite local talent at that perfect venue! We went to the Waterfront on a brilliantly sunny May evening. We sat outside so we could enjoy the sunshine as well as the unbeatable view of the water that you just can’t find anywhere else. We glanced over the menu, took in the view, and the vitamin D, and even had the pleasure of watching some people coming off the water after what appeared to be a great day. Because we have two under two, we decided to start with Mozzarella Sticks, five mozzarella pieces deep fried and served with marinara sauce, perfect for dunking and satisfying two year olds and adults all the same! We also couldn’t pass up the

and the NY Strip. Ultimately he decided on the 12 oz. New York Strip Steak that was grilled to perfection and paired perfectly with BBQ beans and salt potatoes! We could have sat there on the tikki deck all night but it was approaching sundown and bedtime so we went home full and happy! The Waterfront Tavern is the place to be because there is nothing else like it around; they have great food, drinks and entertainment for people of all ages and it is a great place to bring your family! The Waterfront would be honored to help you host your upcoming event. With plenty of space and gorgeous views why not treat your guests to a venue they won’t soon forget! They offer a full banquet menu to meet all of your party needs. The Waterfront Tavern is the perfect place for Wedding Receptions, Rehearsal Dinners, Family Reunions, Private Parties, Business Luncheons, and Office Parties with options for indoor or outside and menus to fit with every budget. To book your next party, shower or event, check out their packages on their website or call the Waterfront at 315-676-3126. Be sure to like The Waterfront Tavern on Facebook and check out their website at http://www.thewaterfronttavern.com/ for more information on events or closures due to staffing issues (hey, they love their staff and everyone needs a break once in a while). If you love the waterfront so much you want to work there, here is some good news – they are hiring for kitchen staff! Come in by boat, bike, or car but whatever you do, don’t let summer pass you by. opportunity to eat some scrumptious shrimp but we couldn’t make up our mind so we decided to try three! First was the sweet and delicious Coconut Shrimp, butterflied shrimp rolled in coconut, lightly fried and served with an absolutely delightful raspberry pepper sauce. Then we tried the Boom Boom Shrimp, which are lightly battered and fried tossed in their very own spicy boom boom sauce. These were the perfect amount of saucy and spicy! Lastly we tried the Buffalo Shrimp, lightly battered and fried tossed in mild sauce with blue cheese for dunking! We were split on our favorites – Magnolia just loved the Coconut Shrimp, Kyle said he could eat the boom boom shrimp every day and I am a total sucker for anything buffalo! Next time we will be trying the Cajun Shrimp, with New Orleans seasoned shrimp sautéed in Cajun butter sauce with garlic toast. For our meals I decided on the ½ pound of broiled Sea Scallops served with fries and a fresh side salad. If there is anything better than eating seafood and watching life go by down the river, let’s just say I haven’t found it yet! Kyle was torn between the seafood platter

From the very opening moments of DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS I felt a prickling sense of unease. After watching over twenty entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I’ve experienced brief moments of what I’ve dubbed as “superhero fatigue,” but they have been surprisingly fleeting. For the most part, the MCU has soared, delivering hit after hit while continuously keeping the audience engaged and

America has the ability to travel throughout the multiverse, but cannot control when these jumps happen. Now that she is in our beloved Strange’s world, things are going to get a lot more complicated. Ever since the events that took place in WANDAVISION, Wanda (Elizabeth Olson) has been unable to let go of her children that existed in Westview. She knows they are out there somewhere, and she will do anything to get back to them. This includes embracing an evil entity that exacerbates her powers, allowing her to transform into the Scarlet Witch, an all powerful being that has the ability to destroy virtually everything that stands in her way. Director Sam Raimi has plenty of experience in the superhero realm. He directed each installment of the Toby Maguire-led SPIDER-MAN films, which at the time, were revolutionary in their own right. He is a visionary filmmaker with a unique flair for delivering over-the-top sequences and bestowing audiences with the greatness known as Bruce Campbell. The interesting thing about the execution in MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS, though, is that it feels a lot more like DRAG ME TO HELL than it does SPIDERMAN. There are scenes in this iteration of DOCTOR STRANGE that are amongst the most violent we have seen in the MCU. Given the fact that we already dealt with Thanos and his penchant for genocide, the fact that the gratuity has been dialed up a notch will not sit well with everyone. There are moments of MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS that are absolutely dazzling. One sequence in particular, in which our heroes are travelling through a litany of universes, stands as one of the highlights of the entire production. There are spectacular cameos that have likely already been spoiled for you, and the performance by Gomez is particularly good. Joining the MCU as a central character is no easy task, and the teen carries this burden with impeccable ease. For the most part, however, the RATED: PG-13 latest installment in the Marvel juggernaut RUN TIME: 2h 6min doesn’t have the same spark that has made GENRE: Action, Adventure, Fantasy many of the others so spectacular. There STARRING: Benedict Cumberbatch, are multiple moments that are meant Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor to be serious, and yet are ludicrous to DIRECTOR: Sam Raimi the point of distraction. The previously Writer: Michael Waldron mentioned sense of video-game inspiration permeated throughout most of GRADE: C+ running time. Wanda made for a maniacal villain, but for a character driven by love, her humanity was completely non-existent. This is no fault of Olson, who was excellent as always, but the story provided. She was like a supernatural terminator without the quippy taglines. Sure, her body and spirit were being possessed by evil, but even Thanos had dimension. While I certainly didn’t mind going along for the ride, I already find myself hoping that the upcoming THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER will bring a bit more to the table. Sports Take by Mike Lindsley

Q&A with Sports Illustrated Syracuse Orange Insider Mike McAllister I recently chatted with Mike McAllister from Sports Illustrated on a wide range of topics pertaining to SU sports including NIL, recruiting, the transfer portal and more. Enjoy ‘Cuse fans! ML: Is Name, Image and Likeness good for college sports? MM: Yes and no. In one respect, players should have the ability to make money off of their name, image and likeness. The NCAA has been profiting off of that, essentially free labor, for decades. The players, which have turned collegiate athletics into a billion dollar business, deserve to be compensated for that. That said, any remaining notion that these are amatuer sports is gone. Because the NCAA failed to put any parameters in place when NIL went into effect, it has become the wild, wild west. Now NIL is being used as a “pay for play” in recruiting. This has the potential to further the gap between the haves and the have nots, making it much more difficult for programs to build and become consistently competitive. That is not good for college sports. ML: Is the transfer portal good for college sports? MM: I think so. Since coaches can leave at any time without notice, players should be afforded the same opportunity. I think there needs to be more parameters put in place surrounding the portal to help regulate it, however. One example would be closing the portal during the season. I do think, eventually, the volume of portal activity will calm down a bit. It is new right now, but players will see that often portal entrants do not find another home or end up in a comparable or worse situation. ML: Realistic expectations for Syracuse football this season? What a schedule! MM: No question the schedule is challenging, but that also makes it fun.

“Because the NCAA failed to put any parameters in place when NIL went into effect, it has become the wild, wild west.”

There are reasons for Orange fans to be excited about the 2022 season I think fans should expect this team to be a bowl caliber team. Can they get there with this schedule? That remains to be seen. But Syracuse has had as good of an offseason as its had in quite some time with the coaching staff changes, additions to the roster, and retention of key players on both sides of the ball. There are reasons for Orange fans to be excited about the 2022 season. ML: Latest in recruiting for SU football? MM: Syracuse has added a transfer wide receiver to its 2022 roster in D’Marcus Adams from Florida Atlantic. Adams is a speedster that brings an element to the team they do not currently have. In addition, Syracuse recently hosted junior college offensive lineman Savion Herring for an official visit. He would also be for the 2022 season. So despite the fact that signing day is more than three months in the rearview mirror, Syracuse continues to add to its roster for next season. Beyond that, Syracuse is off to a solid start in the 2023 recruiting cycle with three commitments, including quarterback LaNorris Sellers and in-state prospect Rashard Perry and David Clement. June should be a busy month with an on-campus camp and top targets taking official visits. ML: Latest recruiting for SU basketball? The Carrier Dome with renovations MM: Syracuse added Duquesne transfer Mounir Hima to its roster for the 2022 season. The 6-11 big is expected to be the backup to Jesse Edwards next season. He has a 7’8” wingspan per his high school head coach. Intriguing player for the Orange. Syracuse does not have a 2023 commit yet, but is prioritizing players such as Elmarko Jackson, JP Estrella, Reid Ducharme and others. ML: Have the Dome renovations done anything at all for recruiting at Syracuse in any sport? MM: That alone is not going to secure a commitment from a prospect. However, I have noticed when interviewing recruits that they mention seeing the Dome as a highlight of visits much more often. ML: Thanks Mike! Keep up the terrific work. MM: You as well my friend!

Business of Interest by Nancy Roberts

36th Syracuse Jazz Fest Presented by Amazon

Something that has always struck me about jazz: the names. The names are so important. I’m sure the aficionados of any musical genre will argue that this is true for classical music, or rock, even folk with its long history. But there is something about the shorthand of information that naming jazz bands will convey from one to another fan of the musical style that is unique. As jazz legend Miles Davis, and, yes, headliner at a past Syracuse Jazz Fest, has said, “I don’t want you to know who I am,” – at the same time, if a fan says “Miles Davis,” another fan will immediately catch a rhythm and a vibe that is different from Boz Scaggs, Diana Krall, Dizzy Gillespie or Jean Luc Ponty (all Syracuse Jazz Fest names). Jazz can be shared by simply naming your favorites, and yet just can’t be pinned down – which may be one reason why the Syracuse Jazz Fest has become such an incredibly popular event for not just Central New Yorkers, but for fans from far and wide who have sorely missed this event that began way back in 1981. Its five-year hiatus has been a trial for music lovers who have planned their summers around that special weekend.

And now (drum roll, flourish and brass) IT’S BACK! Founder and Director Frank Malfitano is the driving force behind the event, and to say “force” is perhaps too weak a term for such an energy, presence, and enthusiast. The long list of top tier performers and awards the Fest has garnered would be testimony enough, but to talk with Frank about the event is an experience in itself. Of the many show sponsors and directors I’ve had the honor to speak with, I can say without doubt that Malfitano takes no back seat to anyone in terms of love of his labor. He loves the artform, loves his hometown of Syracuse and loves the chance to bring the audience the variety and talent, both new and legendary, to a city he promotes with enthusiasm. Just to read the list of acts that have graced the stages of the Fest over the years is to get, perhaps, a definitive list of the top names in jazz across the country and around the world, not to mention the very best talent from right here in the Salt City. And it will reinforce that opening argument: what amazing diversity; at Jazz Fest, there truly is something for everyone.

This year, Jazz Fest is “Presented by Amazon,” as the newest corporation to join the Central New York community takes a bow, and will no doubt earn many friends by catching the pulse of our city, and helping to deliver one of its favorite events. Another feature of this year’s event, to be held June 23rd, 24th and 25th, is that it returns to downtown Syracuse...for the first time in 20 years! These three days bring together the civic and artistic communities, ramped up security for your comfort, and gives all of us a chance to get out of the house and back to visiting and supporting a vibrant downtown.

And I can’t help it, but there’s that “name” thing again: reading the list of entertainment (bands are booked in 2-hour sets on the hour at 20 different clubs – see the full listing to plan your evening) is to walk through the “stars” of much of the Syracuse jazz scene. Nancy Kelly, Matt Vacanti, Deyquan Bowens, Bob Holz, Edgar Pagan, Bill DiCosimo, Dave Hanlon, Dave Solazzo, Rick Montalbano, Jeff Stockham, Melissa Gardiner, Sam Wynn, Ronnie Leigh, Jimmy Johns, Tom Brigandi...and on, and on. Then on Friday from 4 -10:30 pm, the entertainment will move outdoors to Clinton Square. On both Friday and Saturday evenings, you’ll be treated to 4 headline acts per night, and if every year of the festival the claim is “the Fest has outdone itself with great talent!” then this year is no exception. Because of the big name national and international acts, and over 100 Syracuse jazz artists appearing on the many stages and venues at the Fest, the Jazz Fest is more than a great weekend for fans to look forward to. It’s an event that puts Syracuse on a much larger map. Over its lifetime, the Syracuse Jazz Fest has drawn over 1 million guests to the city, and contributed an estimated $50,000,000 in economic development to the region. As one of the nation’s, and the world’s longest-running Jazz festivals, Syracuse ranks in the Top 15 nationally, and top 25 globally. That’s a lot of return on investment. But even more: it’s one of those events that helps make Syracuse a special city we’re proud to call home. See you there!

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm Tamaralee Shutt (Modern Malt; 325 S. Clinton St.) Jeff Stockham’s Jazz Horn Legacy Sextet (Press Room Pub; 220 Herald Pl.) Michael Houston & Sam Wynn (Epicuse; 334 S. Tales from the Vine

by Cassandra Harrington by nancy whitman

4 Common Wine Issues and How to Best Identify Them Wine faults can be made by the winemaker, the store where you purchased the wine from and even the way it was transported. There are so many things that can go wrong with wine. Faults and problems that will let the wine lose its tastes and even quality. This is why you need to make sure that you can quickly identify any underlying issues with the wine. Meaning how to find it without any problems at all. The following is a list of four common wine issues and how you can tell if a wine doesn’t present any problems at all. Making sure that you always purchase the best possible wine.

1. Mature wine versus old, tasteless wine Yes, there is a huge difference between mature wine versus old, tasteless wine. You want to have mature wine. Not the old wine that tastes like cardboard and nothing like mature wine. Mature wine is a wine that is getting stored sealed in the correct container, the right way and at the right temperature. And, for

sure one that is still sealed. The old wine is the wine that is laying in your fridge for months, without it being stored correctly, at the right temperature and open, so that the air can escape. There is a rule that says you never leave an unopen bottle of wine in the fridge. 2. Choosing low quality, cheap wine It’s true, we don’t all have the budget to pay for the more expensive white wines that cost a

stays a high-quality wine, then you need to make sure that you remember these. This will make sure that your wine will always be tasting great, with the latest and best taste. The best way to sample fabulous wines and any other wines that take your fancy is to sign up for a wine of the month club. Widely respected wine clubs have a full range of different wine subscriptions to suit everyone’s taste, from red wines and champagnes to 90+ point wines, organic wines and more.

lot more. However, one thing that you need to know is that there is a huge difference between low quality, cheap wine, and high quality, cheap wine. You don’t need to pay high expenses to find your high-quality wine. You can still purchase cheaper wines, but you need to make sure that you are choosing the one with the best reputation and recommendations. 3. Colored wines that aren’t the normal color you know You normally purchase a certain type of wine. It always has the same rich color. But suddenly you purchase a wine that has an off-color. A color that is a different, dull or a darker color than before. This means that there is something seriously wrong with the content of the wine. It might be old, might have gotten too much heat, or was made incorrectly. There are many different reasons why the wine isn’t the normal color you know. And, it is important that you should reconsider purchasing it. If the color is wrong, there will probably be something wrong with the taste as well.

“It’s important that you should reconsider purchasing a wine if the color is wrong. That will most likely mean that the taste is wrong.”

4. Storing your wine incorrectly can damage your wine quality Storing your wine incorrectly can damage your wine quality as well. Especially, if you have a collection of wine that you are storing in a warm area in your home. There is a good reason why you can purchase wine holders and wine fridges for collectors. The wine needs to be refrigerated at a certain temperature in order for it to keep its quality taste and look. You will see that the color might be different, and it even might taste differently. It doesn’t mean that you should throw the bottle away. It isn’t dangerous to drink it like this. It just won’t taste the same. These are some of the many mistakes that people are making when it comes to purchasing and storing wine. And, if you want to make sure that your quality wine

Organize Your Fridge for Success This Summer Whether it’s to eat healthier, lose a few pounds or just have more energy, it can be hard to stick to your goals. This is especially true if your fridge is packed with ingredients that will thwart your efforts. When hunger strikes, what kind of foods do you reach for? Did you know that where you put things both inside and outside the refrigerator can have a huge effect on your eating habits? Don’t make it harder than it has to be! It starts with something as simple as how we stock the refrigerator. Let’s set ourselves up for success this summer, shall we? Here are a few tips to help you organize your fridge for success this summer.

Have a Plan

“Having the extra space in your fridge can help you find the items you are looking for so you won’t be tempted to grab for just anything.”

The first step in any healthy eating plan is to organize your fridge. Remove everything from your refrigerator and set it all in one place. This should include not only foods that you want or need, but also ingredients and tools (containers and other organization items) that you’ll need for meal prep. Decide where things are going to go. The goal is to determine their designated place so that it stays the same each time you are bringing your groceries in. For example, the fruit always goes in the right drawer, the veggies in the left. If you are a visual person this will be extremely helpful as you will have a clear picture of what will fit where and how much room it will take up.

Add In Your Favorites so It’s Ready to Go

Portion out a serving of your favorite nuts or gluten-free granola and put it right on top of a container of Greek yogurt. Tape some individual bags to pieces of fruit or pieces of string cheese. Put pre-cut bags of veggies on top of single serving hummus cups. This is a nobrainer people! It’s healthy, it’s accessible, and it’s ready to go.

Grab Your Water Elsewhere

How many times have you gone to the fridge to grab some water and been distracted by a piece of leftover pie? Keeping your H20 there means inevitably eyeing the food that’s inside every time you open the door. Fill from the tap or use the dispenser on the outside of your fridge door (if you have one) to avoid the unnecessary test of willpower.

Have a Conversation with Yourself

Before you lunge for the fridge for a snack ask yourself A) am I actually hungry? And B) if I am hungry, how much should I eat based on when my next meal will be? Asking in the right order will help you make choices based on what your body needs versus what your eyes see. Try sticking a note on the outside of the fridge with these questions written on it as a daily reminder.

Nutritious Foods Go on the Middle Shelf

Studies have shown that when subjects are asked to select an item from a group, they tend to choose the item in the center. The rule holds true for food, too,

Free Up Space in Your Fridge

Before you get too far into your fridge cleaning and organization routine, take inventory of your refrigerator essentials. This is where you can condense items to one container and toss food that is past its prime. Having the extra space in your fridge can help you find the items you are looking for so you won’t be tempted to grab for just anything.

according to a study published in the Journal of Marketing that showed that products on middle shelves in grocery stores gain more attention than those on lower shelves. Put all of your healthy food choices in the middle of the fridge so they are in plain sight and easily accessible when hunger strikes.

Put Things Back Where They Belong

Keep Indulgent Snacks Out of Reach

it. Place treats in an opaque bowl and keep them out of reach. The bottom shelf of your pantry pushed all the way to the back is a good place for them. You know what they say. Out of sight, out of mind!

Do Some Prep Work

Store those “superfoods” in a place where you’ll see them first! When you’re really hungry, you don’t want to peel an orange when you can just rip open a bag of chips. The trick is to make vegetables and fruit more convenient to eat by cleaning and cutting them ahead of time so they’re ready to go the next time you’re reaching for something in the fridge.

Don’t Stuff Your Fridge

If you want to change your eating habits, it’s a good idea to throw away anything that tempts you into making unhealthy decisions. It will also make those healthier choices look more enticing! If your fridge is overstuffed, you may be tempted to head toward the pantry for a handful of cookies instead of sifting through the clutter.

Post Your Grocery Receipt on The Fridge

Posting your grocery receipt on the fridge serves as an inventory of the healthy stuff inside. The visual reminder can be a motivating factor when it comes time to eat the good-for-you items. Plus, it will be a constant reminder as to how hard you’ve been working at changing your eating habits.

3 Impactful Ways to Make Your

Make-Up Routine More Sustaintainable

As we have taken a moment to celebrate Earth Day, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the immense environmental challenges facing the world today. Climate change, air pollution and drought conditions seem beyond any one person’s impact. On top of these, the plastic waste crisis affecting our oceans, waterways and environment demands action. Each year, 300 million tons of plastic are produced globally. Yet only 12% is actually recycled. The rest goes into landfills, incinerators or worse, the environment. It’s going to take a different way of thinking about our individual decisions, lifestyle choices and our economy to solve this problem. We need to move from a “take-make-waste” mindset to a circular economy mindset, where plastics don’t become waste but are the building blocks for new products. Companies like Eastman are innovating new ways to tackle the plastic waste crisis by using that waste to create new materials. They are able to tap into that other

87% that is currently not recycled, making it easier for each of us to make smart, sustainable decisions. So how can we incorporate this new way of thinking about materials and products into our daily lives? Revamping your beauty and skincare routine can have a big impact on the growing plastic waste crisis. We know to be mindful of the ingredients and chemicals used in cosmetics, but we might not consider the sustainability of the packaging – the fossil fuels used to make virgin plastic or what happens to that packaging when we are done with the product. The hard truth is that cosmetics packaging rarely gets recycled by consumers in the United States. Yet, many consumers are holding brands accountable for the waste crisis and demanding their partnership in living a more sustainable lifestyle. Fortunately, being an environmentally conscious consumer and being passionate about your beauty routine are not mutually exclusive. More specifically, considering the materials used in what you buy, how often you buy it, and whether it ends up in a landfill at the end of your use are important factors to consider. Now is a great time to take stock of your beauty footprint. In an effort to help you spring clean your beauty routine, here is a trio of ideas to impact your personal sustainability efforts: 1. Think eco-friendly and let your face glow It’s not always about buying into the latest sustainability trends and getting rid of your favorite products. Sometimes it is more about the small steps. Using up the products already in your make-up bag and not tossing them just to replace them at the first opportunity with the newest edition is an easy, sustainable choice. Once you’ve used up Take stock of your beauty footprint what you have, then

consider choosing products with packaging made from sustainable materials that help reduce greenhouse gases. The environment will thank you. So will your face, when it starts glowing by making the first step and opting for the Prism Highlighter Duo from Clio Cosmetics, for example. It features packaging made with Eastman Cristal™ Renew that uses a process which reduces greenhouse gases by 20-30% compared to traditional manufacturing.

don’t even have recycled content. Think about picking products with packaging that reduces landfill waste. Start by considering cosmetics packaging that is made of recycled materials like the Laneige Water Sleeping Mask from Amorepacific. The jar material is made via molecular recycling, which sources plastic waste that would otherwise go to landfills and uses it to make new materials. 3. Lessen your impact, maximize support for circularity Brand loyalty can go a long way toward creating a more su stainable beauty industry. Look for brands and packaging that embrace circularity. Products with recycled content have already lived another life. Increase your support for brands that do their part to use recycled content and design smarter goods and packages without compromising on quality and performance. Take Dior Addict Lip Maximizer as an example. You can let your lips shine while knowing that the brand you use has committed to eliminating fossil-fuel-based plastics from its packaging. It’s way easier than you might think to begin reducing the environmental impact of your daily beauty routine. Change can happen with every decision and beauty purchase. By prioritizing sustainability in packaging and rewarding brands with repeat purchases, more companies will offer more products that help combat the plastic waste crisis. It’s a self-perpetuating loop, much like the circular economy. It’s a virtuous cycle that we can all work to perfect.

Word on the Street by Bill McClellan

NUCLEAR DESTRUCTION This article should not be read by those that cannot handle danger. We will likely be ok. But Likely is a weak word when you are discussing the end of mankind. Joe Biden may well turn out to be the most important president in history. We are on a nuclear precipice. Putin’s war in Ukraine has put the world on the edge of unspeakable nuclear disaster. There is a possibility of looking out your window one day and seeing a mushroom cloud. We are a target. We have nuclear plants, B-52’s loaded with nuclear bombs and several vital strategic military facilities all within 70 minutes driving time. I have been watching this war unfold very carefully. Biden is a compassionate good man. He is surrounded by the best. He listens to and respects his close advisors. The best decisions possible for mankind are being made in this brief window where ultimate earthly (literal) dangers lurk. Putin is mentally unstable. The chances are fair that we will get through this without any nuclear use. Russia will be changed forever. NATO will be greatly strengthened and increase its status as an awesome powerhouse. Post Putin and post Ukraine, Russia most likely will become a much better place. There will be a marshal plan for Ukraine. With lessons learned and China, especially with Taiwan always in the wings, NATO will not only be strengthened by expansion but by

a massive increase in military development and capabilities. Putin, like Trump has a severe mental disorder. Narcissism, in its most grotesque and hideous form. He has a sense of entitlement and self-centered belief devoid of empathy, that remains incorrigible even in view of sound refuting evidence and glaringly clear realities. He cannot face what is happening. He has failed. When one such as this rises to the top in a nuclear weapons state, the danger of nuclear disaster is increased many-fold. Until Putin is dealt with this danger of destroying the planet is very real. The cruel bravado we have been witnessing the last few decades in Georgia, Chechnya, and Syria was that born of this disorder, unspeakable cruelty not for the good of country but to satisfy his interpretation of superiority and world design. And now he has failed. He has a fixation on restoring the old and now very obsolete Soviet Union. His mindset remained in 1991 all thru the years. In the ensuing 31 years, Ukraine experienced real freedom. They lived and tasted a land without fear of government. A land of free press and vast opportunity. The Soviet Union became something you learned about in a history class and anyone under 45 had little or no memory of life under Moscow’s rigid controls. All they knew was “FREEDOM.” That is why they fight with the chills of love of country and protecting their families. With fierce chills of patriotism feeding their hearts these heroes fight amongst the bodies of their loved ones. They will go down in history as among the finest in humanity. Their efforts and sacrifice may well give birth to thinking that can save humankind from itself. The possibility of Ukraine joining NATO with their 1,426-mile border with Russia is one of Putin’s excuses for invading this

peaceful non-threatening land that has come to love Freedom. NATO does not present any danger to Russia. It would however impede his ability to invade. His effort has backfired and Ukraine will be rebuilt and certainly will become a part of NATO. NATO is a defensive organization designed to protect the right of all nations to exist. Post World War II, Russia remained aggressive and dangerous necessitating the formation of NATO. This is a massively historical time that may change the Russian view. The future may well go well. However, much danger remains and much sacrifice and commitment remain. Every success in every way that Putin has hoped for has completely backfired. He did not want NATO expansion further bordering Russia. Because of him Finland and Sweden are now scrambling to join NATO and NATO is properly welcoming them. Finland has an 810-mile border with Russia. Putin’s military which he believed to be invincible is disorganized, unprofessional, and saturated with poor corrupt leadership and poorly trained forced conscripts. His logistical failures, the most critical component of war, boggle the mind. His military strategies are so weak that they are doomed in practice. He will lose the war and he knows it. His utter failure to restore his insane impossible dream of restoring the Soviet Union was and is a hopeless failure. Sanctions are causing decline in a wide variety of ways, all of which are taking their toll on the war effort and the Russian people. His lock on the media is also weakening and many Russians are finding this murderous war was to satisfy Putin’s obsolete pipedream of restoring the Soviet Union. His reckless effort has senselessly slaughtered his own army and countless thousands of Ukrainian military, and 10’s of thousands of Ukrainian civilians, including friends and relatives of Russians in Ukraine when no threat of any kind was real. He is a mentally impaired injured animal looking for a way out and there is none. His illness is incorrigible narcissism and he has a nuclear arsenal that can obliterate life on earth. The direction of the War is such that NATO will increase Ukraine’s abilities (rightfully) until Russia sees there

We live in an era of realities so grotesque that as a species we have a very hard time digesting the magnitude of horror that is at our doorstep. I was going to write this without Trump but then I realized he may well run again and this danger is in play as long as one with this narcissism disease has their finger on the nuclear trigger. Trump is Putin’s buddy. Trump, given the chance will perpetuate the same dangers expressed here. Trump and Republicans were siding with Putin before Ukraine. Many still do. They simply present a front to win in the mid-terms. They will follow Trump, not us. They cannot be trusted. It is urgent that Republicans fail to regain power in the midterms. History predicts otherwise. Democrats must win or the road to hell is likely paved. If the Ukraine War ends without a nuclear event, aside from the unspeakable death, pain and suffering inflicted by Satan’s crony in Russia, the world will become a wiser and very different place with many possibilities. But until we elevate nuclear sanity to “THE ABSOLUTE” earthly priority it is, we are in danger. The nuclear order has a disgustingly weak record of serious non-proliferation and efforts toward nuclear sanity. Without doing this, climate efforts will be futile. We simply will not make it that far. We have and we will use again every weapon we have at our disposal. To believe otherwise is folly and excuses a course toward doom. Remember we are creatures that do not fully comprehend eminent danger until it is on our doorstep. It is most likely we will get through this, most likely “this time.” “Likely,” again, a very weak word when discussing the end of mankind. The doomsday clock is now set at 100 seconds to midnight. If there is to be posterity, we must address the nuclear issue. Start by voting for Democrats. Just the simple truth.

“We will likely be ok. But Likely is a weak word when you are discussing the end of mankind.”

is no hope of gaining any success in Ukraine. As sanctions eat at his country and his abilities and as he loses generals, troops, equipment and support he is comparably diminished and emotionally tortured. The danger of this evil sick man in power during this brief era in human history must not be underrated. We are on the brink. I have come to believe that as long as he is in power, every day we are just lucky we are here. No one thought he would go in to Ukraine. This unpredictability combined with the reasoning I have offered has caused me to believe a replacement would be far less likely to end life on earth. It is so serious we need in place weaponry targeting his entire warring nuclear structure including the ability to wipe out submarines. I hope that is already in place. If there is a move toward a nuclear strike on NATO we must launch as preemptively as is reasonable. “Reason” and “decisiveness” are critical. Our very best should be monitoring the war rooms at the Pentagon and the White House. If he moves our only hope is massive immediate preemptive striking of everything we can and all we can pray for is a world with places where humanity might survive. It only takes 100 nukes to render earth uninhabitable. Russia has 6,257. We have 5,550.

I have a clunky old golf pull-cart that I still use sometimes. It is a heavy old thing with skinny wheels, so I don’t use it that often. But I remember well that it was a father’s day golf gift that we gave to my dad about 40 years ago. He has since passed on and it brings back great memories of the rounds of golf we played together. When I was younger, I was often too busy with other things to play golf in the summer, so it seems like it was mostly in the fall when my dad and I used to play. So on a nice crisp fall day, I like to get out the old golf cart and pull it through the yellow leaves.

Golf by PLR articles

The Greatest Gift Warning – this is going to be an unabashedly sentimental article. You see, it dawned on me the other day, when a friend asked me why I have two seven irons in my bag, how much of what I am carrying were golf gifts. In fact, my driver and my putter are the only two pieces of golf equipment that I went out and bought myself. And even the driver is indirectly the result of a golf gift. This train of thought led me to think about how much golf equipment I carry around, or I have hanging in my garage, that brings back strong and fond memories of people who I have golfed with over the years and who have meant a great deal to me. I received my first birthday golf gift when I was nine. An uncle of mine, who was, and still is, a sports fanatic gave me and my brother each a golf club, in hopes that it would get me interested in the game. My brother and I used to ride our bikes out to a course in the country a couple of miles out of town. Golf was not that popular in rural areas 45 years ago and we could play a round or two, with only a few clubs, without bothering anybody. I still carry that golf club and use it occasionally for tough lies, since the shorter, junior shaft works well when dodging tree branches. But the real reason I carry the club is the fond memories of those games with my brother and the kindness our uncle showed in giving us the birthday golf gift.

My father-in-law didn’t start playing golf until after he retired, when he was about 67. He soon became an enthusiast, joined a club, and played almost every day for years. When he was 90, he was too frail to play a round, but still came along and rode in the cart, getting out and hitting once in a while. I had been away from golf for a while when he started playing and he got me back into it. He gave me his old one wood and promised me that I would always hit it straight. I don’t use it much but I still carry it sometimes, for good luck, and for the memories. My irons were a Christmas golf gift from my wife and daughter about 10 years ago. Once again, I was at a stage in my life when I was too busy for much golf, but had to play once in a while in a golf tournament because of my job. So they decided that I should at least have a decent set of clubs, even though my play at the time was not that great. They helped me relax and get back into the game. I doubt if I will part with those golf clubs, even if technology renders them obsolete. After I got those irons and was starting to play more, I was still using the old driver my father-in-law gave me, but by this time, oversized clubs were becoming the norm. A friend of mine had a driver that he couldn’t hit straight, so he gave it to me. He should have stuck with it, because it gave me a great deal of distance. Once I gained some confidence from yet another golf gift, I went out and bought myself a new driver, the only new club in my bag (I have since added a putter). Golf gifts, whether they are for Christmas, birthday or father’s day, don’t have to be expensive, don’t have to work and improve golf scores, for them to be cherished for years to come. Golfers will make associations and build memories from simple gestures, knowing that it is the game and whom you play it with that matters most. The relationships forged by golf are the greatest gift. Golf gifts don’t have to be expensive

Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers For those who have ever read any of my columns, you already know that I am a guy who fully embraces nostalgia. As a child of the 80’s and 90’s who adored movies, wrestling, TGIF, and cartoons, if you find a way to incorporate any of those elements into a modern production, I’m going to be there for it. It should come as no surprise then (and I see no point to burying the lede here) that I absolutely adored the new CHIP N’ DALE RESCUE RANGERS movie. Having seen every episode of the original RESCUE RANGERS series that originally ran in 1989-90 and given the fact that I still sing the theme song on a regular basis, it’s fair to say that from the moment I heard of the film’s existence, I was excited for its release. So, I suppose the inference can be made that I am a little biased, but at the same time, I also had expectations that were probably higher than most. Set in a ROGER RABBIT-like world where humans and animated characters live, work, and play together, the CHIP N’ DALE’S RESCUE RANGERS series was a beloved smash. The two chipmunks, who met as youths and quickly forged a bond, were the best of friends and a powerhouse duo. Chip (John Mulaney) was the straight man and Dale (Andy Samberg) was the comedic relief. Despite the success of their show, Dale was bummed out that he was never taken seriously and when the opportunity came for him to star in his own series, he jumped at the chance. This led to the cancelation of RESCUE RANGERS and the dissolution of not only the professional partnership, but also to the friendship of Chip and Dale. Flash forward to 2022, and the relationship between the former best friends remains the same. Dale, who has had CGI surgery, grasps to the past while travelling the convention circuit. Chip, on the other hand, sells insurance and spends time with his dog. It isn’t until their old pal Monterey Jack (Eric Bana) needs their help with his uncontrollable cheese habit that the two cross paths again. This meeting seems fleeting until Monty goes missing. It appears that he has been kidnapped by a bootlegger known as Sweet Pete (Will Arnett) who transforms Disney characters into altered versions of themselves and forces them to appear in cheap knock-offs like “Pooj the Fat Honey Bear,” “Spaghetti Dogs,” and “Jasper the Dead Ghost Kid.” The police are limited in what they can do, but these two gumshoes are picking up the slack. Though Chip is somewhat reluctant, he wants to help Monty, and the chipmunks are a duo once more. RESCUE RANGERS may very well be the funniest movie I have seen this year. There are many laugh-out-loud moments for children and adults alike, and delightfully unexpected moments are abound. The cameos and references alone are beyond brilliant, made better by the fact that most of them are not acknowledged in any way. Eagle eyed 90’s nerds will delight in seeing McGruff the Crime Dog manning the phones at a police station while Paula Abdul cozies up to DJ Skat Kat at a dance party. There are countless moments like this, and repeated viewings may be needed to catch them all. Mulaney and Samberg are a great team, and though I questioned how their voices would work as these beloved characters, they were absolutely seamless. The melding of different animation styles is played for laughs without ever being distracting or off-putting.

Director Akiva Schaffer incorporates virtually every animation style, from oldschool black-and-white animation, to puppetry, to SOUTH PARK, to the POLAR EXPRESS-type of “realistic” animation that is played for big laughs. In many ways, the film reminded me of the original LEGO MOVIE. That film took audiences completely by surprise, taking a familiar premise and creating something entirely new. It proved to be an exercise in wit and cleverness that was aimed at audience members of all ages, and while RESCUE RANGERS obviously targeted itself towards members of my generation who grew up in an age of Disney TV toons, it can (and will be) easily enjoyed by anyone. Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald by Therese Anne Fowler Not long ago, a friend gave me a bag full of books. That’s sort of like Christmas morning to me. What treasures were there? The first one that caught my attention was Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald. This is not a new book – it was published in 2014. But since when has that ever meant much in the world of fiction? I was in high school when I first read an F. Scott

Fitzgerald novel, The Great Gatsby, probably one of, if not the most accessible of his books and thus a good introduction to his writing for a high school student. Two main things struck me: his prose was delightful, and his characters were despicable, except for perhaps, Nick Carraway. Oddly enough, it was this novel – the one now hailed as one of the greatest American novels – that began his slow decline into failure, alcoholism, and ultimately, an early death. In each of his other novels, Fitzgerald was simply playing his own life out on paper, offering some excuses for “his” character, and blaming things on his lost (real) first love, Ginevra King, and later his wife, Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald. More than that, of course, was the theme of “us against them,” the “youth vs. age,” and the Jazz Babies vs. the Old Guard, that permeated his writing. This, no doubt, appealed to the young teachers of the 60s, who found common ground with the introspection of a writer like Fitzgerald. What’s all this got to do with a book about Zelda, his wife, the spoiled youngest child of an old and wealthy southern family, notorious party girl and later an institutionalized supposed schizophrenic? After all the novels Fitzgerald wrote in which his wife’s character played a major role, and all the examinations of his writing and him as a man that reflected on her influence, and the several biographies of her that have tried to understand her within the scope of her relationship to her famous writer husband – here is a novel that digs into her heart and soul in a way that is both fizzy and easy to read, but at the same time, sees life through her eyes. A problem, of course, for any writer tackling a fanatically covered subject like the Fitzgeralds, will be finding something new, fresh, insightful or distinctive to say about her characters. Surprisingly, here is a fresh take on the woman who often takes the lion’s share of the blame for the decline and fall of a Great American Author. The story is written in the voice of Scott and Zelda were the “it” couple of the 20s Zelda, and for the most

part, it works. Early on, the voice is girlish, flirtatious, and uses “gonna” and “s’pose” and even a sweet Southern drawl that drips honey and privilege. Following her near-miss affair with a Latin lover, when Scott has been inattentive and even jealous of her own literary efforts, there is a sudden shift in the style of her voice, and in the focus of the narrative. We are introduced to a tougher, more no-nonsense, even “feminist” voice, that actually made me stop, back up a few pages, and be sure I hadn’t missed anything. I’m still not sure if I think it was a brilliant writing move, or if the

thought Zelda had been unfaithful (not just merely desirable) and when, at least according to this interpretation, he fell under the sway not just of money, his agent, and alcohol, but other writers – notably Hemingway – that he began to see her as an adversary, rather than his joined-at-the-hip ally. As for Zelda, and this much appears to be history, she desperately wanted to shine as something other than the woman that hung off the arm of Scott Fitzgerald. Fowler uses her artistic license to give Zelda a real dose of artistic ambition, wanting to write and paint as well as her famous addiction to ballet at a point in life when her body was past any dream of becoming a prima ballerina, and one of the indications that perhaps her mental struggles were more than simple symptoms of “too much” – too much alcohol, too many parties, too much attention, too much wild living and too little security. We know how the story ends. But Fowler takes us on a route there that is strictly her own creation, while remaining utterly faithful to the sequence of events, letters, and notebooks of the main characters. And her style goes down like a bubbly drink on a hot summer day.

author was determined to “make a case” for Zelda. Scott and Zelda were the “it” couple of the 20s. The very epitome of the Jazz Babies – all youth, vigor, self-indulgence, glamour and not a lot of common sense. They drank, spent, danced, “flipped off” their elders, cut their hair and their hemlines, and roared the twenties to the maximum. If the expression take it to 11 had been around then, it would have been 12. They knew all the right people, and lived in all the hot places. It was only when Scott

Preventive Medicine by by Dr. Dr. Barry Barry

PEMF Recently, because several different patients have been urging me to investigate it, I have gotten into energy medicine. Unfortunately, there is little information in the conventional medicine world that deals with anything but how to treat problems with pills because...that’s where the money is. Nonetheless, there is real science there and if it can help patients we should be familiar with the topic. The Hindus around 4000 BC used magnetized stones called lodestones to treat illness. The Chinese around 2000 BC had protocols for using lodestones on acupuncture points. Cleopatra was said to have worn magnetic jewelry (lodestones) to prevent aging. Hippocrates, in Greece, was known to use magnets for pain. More recently, the Russians have been using electric devices for decades to promote healing and health. One of the earliest scientific accounts of using magnets is found in the book De Magnete, written in 1600 by William Gilbert, the personal physician of the English Queen. This natural philosopher used “lode stones” to treat a variety of health problems of ordinary British citizens and even the Queen of England. Contemporary magnet therapy began in Japan immediately after World War II by introducing both magnetic and electromagnetic fields in clinical practice. This modality quickly moved to Europe, first in Romania and the former Soviet Union. During the period of 1960–

1985, nearly all European countries designed and manufactured their own magnetic therapeutic systems which utilized various waveshapes. In fact, the first book on magnet therapy, written by Todorov, was published in Bulgaria in 1982 summarizing the experience of utilizing magnetic fields for treatment of 2,700 patients having 33 different pathologies. It wasn’t until the late 1970s that American Drs. Andrew Bassett and Arthur Pilla created a noninvasive PEMF device that succeeded in healing a nonunion fracture. The 1980s also saw the introduction of the first FDA-approved PEMF system, intended for use as a bone stimulator to treat nonunion fractures. The seminal book “Body Electric: Electromagnetism and the Foundation of Life” was published in 1986 by Dr. Robert Becker and Gary Selden. This book is important because it was one of the first descriptions of the body as an electromagnetic apparatus and therefore very susceptible to magnetic field therapies. Since then thousands of studies using many different devices have shown that electromagnetic fields can have a profound effect on cellular health and as we are fond of saying, cellular and mitochondrial health IS health. For a long list of scientific articles about the benefits of emf fields you can check out DrPawluk.com. Dr. William Pawluk is an American physician who probably has the most experience with emf generators of all kinds. For those of you skeptical about how emf fields can affect the Cleopatra body you need only look at your iphone. Your iphone’s battery can be recharged by putting it on a mat that emits an emf field. So too can your body’s batteries be recharged by placing it on a mat that emits the appropriate frequencies, intensities and waveform. We know that emf fields in our environment have the potential to harm us. Why would you doubt that emf fields therefore have the potential to heal us. Need more? Of course you do...let’s get Lodestones down to basic science. As taken directly from Dr. Pawluk’s website...All matter is made up of moving particles. Forces exist in space around these moving particles. These forces are magnetic fields. By definition force is an interaction that changes the motion of an object. An electric field is the force field created by the flow of electricity caused by attraction and repulsion of electric charges. A magnetic field is a force field created as a consequence of the flow of electricity. Electric fields and magnetic fields always exist together. One cannot exist without the other. An electromagnetic field, then, is the combination of an electric field Electromagnetic fields can have a profound effect and a magnetic field. Our bodies are fundamentally electric. When a person goes into cardiac arrest, for example, a defibrillator is used to apply electric energy to the heart so that they can re-establish a normal rhythm. So, the electricity flowing through our bodies creates electromagnetic fields. External magnetic fields and the bodies native electromagnetic fields interact in proportion to the strength of the fields. Because of these interactions a magnetic field

passing through the body will have an effect on the cellular level. Electric and magnetic fields control our chemistry by changing and influencing the motion of charged particles. This movement stimulates a vast array of chemical and electrical actions and tissues helping them rebalance or heal themselves where necessary. Additionally this increased motion of ions and electrolytes help cells increase surveillance energy by as much as 500%. Magnetic fields affect the charge of the cell membranes, rebalancing it so that the membrane channels can open up. These channels are like the doors and windows of a house, by opening them oxygen and nutrients are better able to enter the cell and carbon dioxide and waste are more easily eliminated from the cell. This helps to balance and restore optimum cell function. Electromagnetic fields affect the charge of the cell membrane. This is the basis for a magnetic field therapy, perfecting and improving basic cellular function in order to combat a variety of health conditions and when possible prevent cellular damage from happening in the first place. Still skeptical? Here’s an article about the benefits of emf therapy from our own SUNY Upstate Medical University. A PULSING ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD PROMOTES THE DIFFERENTIATION OF OSTEOBLASTS (MC3T3) AT LOW CELL DENSITY IN VITRO. *Button, C; +**Spadaro, JA; **Margulies, B S; **Allen, M J; **Wang, Y; **Damron, T A; *Dept. of Neuroscience and Physiology, **Department of Orthopedic Surgery, SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, NY Believing in this technology I bought a PEMF machine for my patients to use in the office. My plan is to measure patients phase angle and their arterial flexibility and see if it changes before and after a treatment. I will also be offering it to my patients with acute and chronic pain to see if it helps. It’s not covered by insurance so your doctor will have nothing to do with it. But, there are PEMF machines available in Syracuse to use but you have to do the internet legwork on your own. If I found the guy in Liverpool you can too. PEMF is not a cure all. But, if you have chronic pain or feel low energy why not give this very safe modality a try? PEMF is not recommended for use in infants under 2 weeks, pregnant women and patients with implantable devices like pacemakers, defibrillators and pain stimulators. This is by no means new technology but it’s new to me and I am eager to check out its potential. Until next month...get well and stay well.

Step 3 • Prepare Pesto. Put fresh basil, sunflower seeds, garlic, 2 tbsp. lemon juice, nutritional yeast flakes, 1/2 tsp. kosher salt and olive oil into a blender. Blend until smooth. Set aside. Step 4 • Pour a thin layer of marinara sauce in the bottom of the baking dish, followed by a layer of noodles, vegan ricotta, pesto, beef-style crumbles and sauce. Repeat layering of ingredients until all are used up. Sprinkle remaining vegan mozzarella on the top. Step 5 • Bake for 1 hour. Enjoy!

Computers & the Web by Nancy Roberts

Game Changers I, like many of us, complain a lot about technology. It doesn’t do what it’s supposed to, it’s hard to learn, it takes up too much of our time and attention, it’s expensive, it’s quickly outdated. That’s all true, but I also began to think about the tech that has actually been a real change for the better – and some new “ways of life” that I’d be loathe to go without now that I have been so spoiled by them. Recognizing that all technology, from fire on, more or less, can be – as we were warned by the story of Prometheus, who stole fire from the Zeus after he punitively took it away from humans so that they would have to eat their food raw – used for both good and ill in almost every case, I’ll just concentrate on the advantages of a given technology without worrying about the ways in which it can also do us harm. And I won’t be so basic as to review email, laptops, and cell phones. They’re just part of the Mount Everest using Google Earth background now, aren’t they? One of my favorite things is Google Earth, or the equivalent. “Google Earth is a computer program that renders a 3D representation of Earth based primarily on satellite imagery. The program maps the Earth by superimposing satellite images, aerial photography, and GIS data onto a 3D globe, allowing users to see cities and landscapes from various angles.” I have always been a fan of maps, atlases, and images of places far away and far different from what I can see when I walk outdoors, or even go for a ride in no particular direction to see what I might discover. Google Earth allows you to go to the top of Mount Everest, or up the Congo River; visit Paris or see what Lake Titicaca looks like. The other day I showed someone my childhood home using “street view” on a map, and walked to my childhood school using the same route I did all those years ago. Along the same lines is GPS. As long as you have a signal and a cell phone, you have the benefits of a compass and a map, and if you use an app like Find My Car (or a pin dropped on a map) you can find your way back to a particular location and not run (much) risk of getting lost. Calendars are a pain, of course, since we must keep them in order to conduct business, personal or professional. But using an online, coordinated calendar with alerts allows us to use our computer and our other devices to warn us about an appointment we made a month ago, complete with details of location, departure time, others attending, and a host of other needed information to keep things simple and within reach. I have been a fan of books on tape for so long I can scarcely

recall not having them – but they were just that – on tape. Or on CD or DVD. And I rented them from the library because they were prohibitively expensive. But today, with online apps, you can listen to your favorite book via a phone or tablet, and, with wireless ear buds, you don’t have to bother anyone else with the sound or have to stay tethered to your device. You do have to worry about a charge, but with solar chargers, you can have a full Wireless ear buds additional charge in a small device that can go into your backpack or on a belt loop and not have to worry about running out of power. I would never have expected to say that I love all the gadgets new cars provide, but – I do. The backup camera is as much safety device as convenience, but it’s also quite handy to not have to worry about fumbling with a key in a lock or even for the button on a keyfob, but to simply have the fob on your person will unlock the door, connect your phone, and set your driver’s seat and controls at the preferred position. You don’t have to worry about trying to follow the GPS instructions on your phone, because your car is equipped and will duplicate the map to a right-on-the-dashboard location for ease of use. Yes, I prefer in-person meetings, but there is much to be said for the ease of a phone call with the added benefit of some visual signals from those you’re talking to – so apps like Zoom have their benefits. A four hour car trip, or a plane flight to a short meeting have, in our age of Zoom, become overkill; but having a “semi” face to face meeting with someone, or even a catch-up chat with a friend, can benefit a lot from seeing a smile, or a moment of confusion. I have detailed my love affair with Air Fryers, and it only becomes the more happy as I discover the many things the air fryer can do. The other day I had unexpected company for dinner, so I managed to make perfectly done steak, fries, and salad, in the amount of time, it would normally have taken me to make just the salad. I wouldn’t say that I’d always use an air fryer over conventional cookery, but it’s nice to have when you need it! And finally – yes, streaming services are quite nice. Your choices increased exponentially, even over the bad old days of HBO when the “new movie” was a huge event (now it’s more like the 300 new movies/series per day). Whatever you’re in the mood for, it’s probably available on a streaming service, when you want it and in whatever room you happen to be in. So what are your choices for “can’t imagine now having it?” Just pay attention to your day, and notice all the ways life has become easier. It may surprise you! Backup camera in newer car
