On the Kit and On the Go with Byron Cage Somebody said, once that “if you want to really get to know a man, then work with him.” In my case this is often true. -And in this story this notion exists. I’ve played about 35 minutes set-time with Byron Cage over two ocassions. Yet, We’ve only had about 15 minutes over those same two ocassions to visit, chat and actually get to know one another a bit. Busy guys. Even still, on these ocassions, because of the music —and not so much the chit-chat— we’ve become pals. Sometimes, that’s how it goes in the music biz, getting to know people, this way. What I do know about Byron Cage is that this Grammy nominated, SAMMY-celebrated, CNY-loved, grammy nominated, globetotting drummer Byron Cage SAMMY-celebrated, CNY-loved, globetotting drummer is as solid of a dude as he is one of the very best drummers, anywhere. He tours internationally, and plays the circuit, here. He plays for a variety of folks and he also is his own recording artist. Prolific, dedicated, diverse and decidedly positive, his success in professional music is nothing short of inspiring. In all occasions, he’s a consummate gentleman, which is also part of his success. The last time we ran into each other, we jammed a few tunes at the open jam at the Liverpool Limp Lizard, and decided to get to gether for this article. Chuck Schiele: Hey Byron. Thank you very much for visiting with us here at Table Hopping. Byron Cage: Thank you, Chuck. It’s my pleasure. CS: How long have you been playing music? How did you get started? BC: I grew up in a musical family so I have always been involved with music in one way or another. I got serious about a career in music when I was close to graduating from college. A couple off years later I was offered an audition in Nashville with a touring Blues act. Have been on the road ever since. CS: Who and what influences what you do? BC: My father was my biggest influence. He sang, played, directed and was very well respected in all of those things throughout the state. He passed away 3 weeks before I started my first national tour. His memory is the main reason behind my hustle. Other

than that, I just love what I do. CS: What do you love most about music? or – Why do you do this? BC: I love that music is the universal language that has brought me around the world several times. I have been places that I would have never touched if not for music. I’m happy that I can offer some enjoyment to people during a time when the political climate and state of the world are questionable at best. It’s the ultimate escape —or therapy even— for me. I do it because I know it’s important to make people feel good. And I know I was built for this. CS: With whom are you working with now?

BC: Right now I’m working with a bunch of artists locally and nationally. The two national/international acts that I am with regularly are Joe Louis Walker and the Otis Taylor Band. Locally I am working with Melissa Gardiner, Seth Marcel, Zainep ‘Zz’ Abdelaal, Anthony Saturno, Jess Novak and the list goes on for a while. I am actually about to release my second full length album and start touring with my own band so I will be devoting most of my time to that. CS: Please share with us some of your career highlights. BC: If I start from the beginning I would have to put my time working with Boyd Tinsley of the Dave Matthews band. I still have the recording or the unreleased project and I’m not sure it will ever be “officially” released but, something may end up leaking eventually. Fast forward to most recently being featured on a Wikidrummers interview on my last tour in France, to earning a Grammy Nomination for drum/vocal performance on Joe Louis Walker’s last record, being inducted into the NYS Blues Hall of Fame and having 4 SAMMY awards under my belt for work with several artists in the area. This is year 10 of professional play and I haven’t stopped to look back so without taking up too much time or space I will stop there for now. Please share with us a funny anecdote from the road. BC: Well, there have been plenty. Most noteable was while playing a festival in northern California with Tommy Castro. End of the night and of the set. Just got in to the drum solo and I put a hole in the bass drum head. I’m trying to make it happen in front of 2k people with a drum tech between my legs tapeing up the bass drum head in hopes that I can finish strong and it doesnt break again. Worst possible time for that to happen when the only sound being heard was coming from me. CS: Eesh. Yup. That’s a good story. What are your thoughts on Syracuse music and it’s community? BC: I think that Syracuse has a great scene. It has really come alive in the past few years and I’m proud to be part of that. There are a bunch of great musicians and artists here that support one another. That support is what it takes for the movement to grow. I just hope we can export our talent a bit more with all the new projects that are coming out. CS: Who’s in your current listening scope, right about now: Globally, locally? BC: I’m listening to Kyle Dion, Moses Sumney and Elijah Blake a lot, latley. Locally I’m supporting all my people, but truthfully I have been consumed with finishing up my own project. CS: Advice for up and coming musicians? BC: My advice would be to keep doing it. Play as often and as long as possible. Make lasting connections and don’t burn bridges. Study your gig and show up EARLY. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. Remember, that every genre and musical situation has value to your development as an artist. CS: What are your near future music plans? BC: Most important is the release of my new project. ‘Very proud of the way it’s shaping up and the potential for placement from it. Other than that, I will be enoying festival season while it’s here and getting ready to head back to Europe in the fall. CS: Is there a way for us to stay in touch with you and your music? Dumbo

In mid-July, Jon Favreau’s THE LION KING roared into the box-office and was not only a satisfying cinema-going experience, but a lucrative one as well. Raking in a staggering $191 million in its opening weekend, it illustrated the fact that Disney’s decision to rollout remakes of many of their most beloved classics has resonated with fans, and the barrage of adaptations will certainly continue until the well has been tapped dry. Prior to the release of THE LION KING, Tim Burton was at the helm of a reimagining of DUMBO. Though it didn’t reach the same heights (creative or financially) as Favreau’s film, it took a far different approach in style and substance. Rather than a frame-by-frame recreation of its Tim Burton’s Dumbo animated predecessor, it completely reimagined the emotional tale by introducing new characters, eliminating others (no Timothy Q. Mouse?!) and diverging almost completely from the 1941 classic. When circus cowboy Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell) returns home from the Great War, his children Joe (Finley Hobbins) and Milly (Nico Parker) couldn’t be more excited to see him. While they are surprised and concerned to see that he has lost his arm, they are thrilled to have a parent once again. While their father was gone, their mother had passed away due to an illness, leaving the circus performers and ring master Max continued on pg 6

Dumbo continued from pg 5 Medici (the perfectly cast Danny DeVito) filling in as makeshift parents. While Joe is eager and excited to be involved in the show, his sister has loftier expectations. She’d rather be a scientist, and spends her time reading and performing experiments. Looking to give his flailing circus a much-needed boost, Medici purchases a pregnant elephant name Jumbo. He foresees the baby being a main attraction, something that will set his show apart from all others. When the baby is born, however, he has gigantic ears and Medici views this deformity that will push audiences away, as opposed to bringing them in. Enraged, he tells Holt to find a way to take care of it, while he desperately tries procure a refund. Like in the original production, Dumbo’s debut goes horrifically wrong, leading Jumbo to rampage while trying to protect her child. As a result of her actions, she is caged and sent away, leaving poor Dumbo alone and heartbroken. Witnessing the devastation of the separation, and understanding the shattering emotions of losing a mother, the Holt children strike up a friendship with the pint-sized pachyderm, and in the process, uncover an incredible secret. Though the huge ears may have initially been viewed as blight, they are, in fact, a blessing. With these ears, Dumbo can do something not a single other elephant in the world can do; he can fly. Elements of the original Disney story are certainly recognizable in this initial setup for the film, but

Here, a classic shot of Dumbo with the feather that makes him believe he can fly. from here, it differs mightily. Dumbo becomes a massive attraction, and garners the attention of greedy businessman V.A. Vandevere (a delightfully over-the-top Michael Keaton). Showering Medici and his crew with promises and compliments, he intends on pairing Dumbo with the high-flying Colette Marchant (Eva Green) in a show that will stand as the greatest show in the world. Burton’s film definitely earns points for originality, and while I loved the execution of THE LION KING and its faithful adaptation (which was a main point of criticism for some), it was also intriguing to see the story of DUMBO going in a different direction. As we’ve come to expect from the visionary filmmaker, Burton’s lavish set pieces and designs were beautiful to behold, and Dumbo was downright adorable. Without uttering a word, he emerges a soft-souled, kind, and enduring character that shines brightly 2018 2019 2012 2013 even when the film itself does not. Though Dumbo is the title character, and should indeed stand as the focal point of the production, the human element is featured much more prominently and there are many moments that should NEWLY CROWNED engage the audience far more than they BEEF ON A do. Whereas the 1941 production was a WECK BURGER snappy 64 minutes, the remake clocks in at nearly two hours. As a result, it is a production that feels forced and unnecessary at times, testing the patience and attention spans of viewers of all ages. Syracuse NY - Syracuse's neighborhoods will again benefit from the positive cultural, social and economic outcomes of Jazz in the City, the mobile cultural platform that has served the city since 2002. Four concert events are scheduled on Thursday evenings in August. National and regional groups will perform, minority vendors will showcase their wares, and the Molina Healthcare Village will distribute information from a host of area health and family service organizations. Tops Friendly Markets will give out coupons. Unions, colleges, and the Syracuse Police will be on hand to recruit, and the La Liga Youth Corps will provide ground services for the four-concert series. All events are free and open to the public.

2019 Syracuse Orange Football Season Preview The Dino Babers era at Syracuse University enters year four with the highest expectations of any season during his tenure. Why wouldn’t the season be set-up this way? Upset over Virginia Tech. Upset over Clemson. Almost another upset over Clemson last season. Oh, last season, a 10-3 finish with a 34-18 Camping World Bowl win over West Virginia plus a 6-2 ACC record and solid wins from start to finish. The Orange finished the season ranked #15 in both the AP and Coaches Poll. But there will be challenges ahead. There’s a new sheriff behind center. Will the linebackers hold up? Syracuse isn’t

This unit must protect the youngster Tommy DeVito. The season depends on it. Key player: Tommy DeVito. The warrior Eric Dungey is gone and so too is the dual threat of pass-run for the most part. DeVito of course must get protection, but the coaching staff and Tommy D need to work together on getting the ball out quickly and executing the fast-paced offense. “He has all the tools to be ‘the man’ and flashed that last season,” says Mike McAllister of Cuse Nation. “Fans should be patient as sometimes young quarterbacks have growing pains. But DeVito has all the tools. -Arm strength, accuracy, bravado and intelligence.” Exciting player to watch: Abdul Adams, RB. I remember talking with people inside the program who warned me that the best running back for Syracuse in 2018 wasn’t even on the field. The Landover, MD product is explosive and dynamic and can help with playaction for Tommy D. He did make his debut in the bowl game against WVU and scored two touchdowns. Oh, and he came from Oklahoma so he can play. Team strength: Special teams. You could go defensive line or secondary, but Syracuse is loaded-up on special teams more than people around the country think. “SU returns the nation’s best kicker in Andre Szmyt and probably a Top 5 punter in Sterling Hofrich-

The Great Debate: Cardio or Strength Training? It is indeed a great debate. Cardio or Strength Training? Do you believe that one is superior to the other? Strength and cardiovascular training methods are often at odds. More often than not, people favor one over the other. Gym myths and misunderstandings just add to the confusion, promoting ideas like “running burns muscle” or weight training makes a woman “bulky.” Other gym patrons simply don’t know how to incorporate both strength and cardiovascular training into their routine. When I was just a young girl, I thought that cardio was the only form of exercise I needed. I figured as long as I showed up for a group fitness class or jumped on a “dreadmill” for forty-five minutes it would be enough to improve my health. I’m sure to some extent it did. However, through education, personal experience and years of working with gym patrons of all ages and fitness levels, I now know better. Cardio is of course a necessary component of any fitness program, as it offers numerous health benefits, but alone, it is not the complete answer to lifelong health.

Cardiovascular exercise does so much more than just burn fat and calories. Research shows that daily cardiovascular exercise makes your heart stronger so that it doesn’t have to work as hard to pump blood. It increases your lung capacity, helps reduce the risk of obesity, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, stroke and is linked to a decreased risk of some cancers. Regular physical activity can help lower your blood pressure and can raise HDL cholesterol, the “good” cholesterol. It can also reduce stress, help provide a better night’s rest, prevent osteoporosis, improve your mood, alleviate symptoms of depression or anxiety and give you more confidence in how you look and feel. The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity a week (30 minutes per day, 5 times a week) or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise. Are you getting enough physical activity in each week? Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women? You’d better get moving! Regular exercise can lower your risk of heart disease and improve factors linked to cardiovascular health. Cardio is any continued on pg 20

My mom was an avid reader – between her and my father, who read his way from A to Z in our encyclopedia (skipping not one entry), I assumed that reading was simply something you did, like breathing or eating, and often in place of sleeping. As she grew older mom’s taste in literature went from the more highbrow to simply reading for pleasure, and she developed a couple of particular interests: mysteries (especially cozy series), and Scotland. So a mystery set in Scotland was a perfect choice. Inevitably, there would be one or more such books on her bedside table, or near her place at the table, carefully bookmarked and often read more than once. When she moved from her larger home into a smaller apartment, she took many of her favorites

with her, but my sister and I inherited boxes and boxes of those she had no room for. Hunting for something not too challenging to read on a recent trip, I found “The Shadowy Horses,” and simply stuffed it into my carry-on bag without much thought. It turned out to be a far more fun read that I could have expected. “The Shadowy Horses” is taken from a line in a Yeats’ poem “He Bids His Beloved Be At Peace.” Now, Yeats is another favorite of mine, along with horses, so it may not have been quite as accidental a find as I thought, my subconscious perhaps leading the way. And as it turns out, the book centers around an archaeological dig (yes, like most girls who are horse lovers, I also went through my archaeology period) searching for the mythical Ninth Legion of Rome, that disappeared into the mists of time and Caledonia (Scotland), around 109 A.D. I had actually also read a couple of books that dealt with this persistent mystery – there was a Ninth Legion, and it did disappear without a trace somewhere in the borderlands of Scotland. The heroine of the book is a feisty, intelligent, bookish but still passionate young woman named Verity Grey. She is surrounded by the requisite number of men: an older, wiser mentor (to whom she is attracted, at least intellectually); a handsome, clever, dangerous man with whom she has had an affaire de coeur but whom she now no longer trusts; a roughabout-the-edges but educated Scotsman who is both a scholar and a local. And a ghostly presence a young local boy with a sixth sense calls “The Sentinel.” Like most books of its genre, this one is full of continued on pg 17

Rudy’s Lakeside Season: From the Wednesday closest to St. Patrick’s Day in March to Columbus Day Monday in October SUMMER (Memorial Day to Labor Day): Please call if coming out close to closing time Rudy’s Lakeside is just one of those places you fall in love with. Maybe it’s the look, an unpretentious white-with-red-accents building, lying comfortably along the shore of Lake Ontario. Maybe it’s the “oh my gosh they have that, too!” menu: yes, it’s a “fried food palace,” where you can get all those delightful treats you don’t want to cook at home but love to eat. Maybe it’s the memories conjured up as you watch a couple of kids with their parents wading in the water on the stony shore, the kids learning to skip those stones. Whatever it is, the minute I drove up I was smiling, and so were the many customers lounging in outdoor seating, studying the extensive overhead menu, carrying a tray filled with scrumptiouslooking fish, burgers, hot dogs, and more out to their family and friends nearby. Rudy’s is now in its 73rd summer —and third generation of family owners— of being a highlight of a visit to Lake Ontario, and for the people of Oswego. Opened by Rudy Gadziala and his wife, Marie, in 1946, the business passed to the current owner’s parents, Brad and Carol Livesey, and is now owned and operated by Jason Livesey. If you’d not been to Rudy’s Lakeside since the 50’s, you would probably recognize it, as Livesey tells us he has tried to maintain the style, while upgrading and improving the restaurant. “New rest rooms, updated counters and outdoor seating,” said Livesey, “and we’ve gone from festival-style service to line service, to move people through more quickly, and help them get exactly what they want. Oh, and this is the first year we’re taking credit cards, along with a reward system for frequent visitors. But we wanted to keep the original style of Rudy’s.” The idea behind Rudy’s is simple: good, fresh food (local wherever possible), wellprepared, served with a smile and enjoyed with an unbeatable view. The emphasis, of course, is on fish. “Our haddock is never frozen,” Livesey stresses. “We’re about the only ones in the area who can say that. And our beef is locally sourced, and pounded here, fresh, in the restaurant every day. Hoffman hots, and our special Texas Hot Sauce.” This sauce, it turns out, is Marie Gadiala’s secret recipe, who thought it wasn’t a hit til it was taken Good, fresh food and local off the menu – and customers started askwhenever possible ing for it. Now, diners can have anything and everything with or without it, as well

Another key piece of the Rudy’s story is its deep ties to Oswego. Livesey explains that initially, he wasn’t sure he would join the business. Like his own father, who worked for Grumman downstate before moving to Oswego in 1962, Livesey initially left the community and lived in Boston and San Francisco, attending culinary school, before returning and entering the business. “As I got more involved in the business, and the community, I was really surprised to learn how deeply my dad, mom, and Rudy’s were rooted in the community,” he says. “My father was involved in getting the volunteer fire department started, he joined every club and organization, and Rudy’s was very involved in anything to do with kids and their activities. And my mom was also a big part of starting what ultimately became the Harbor Fest.” “Small business is the heart of any community,” Livesey continues. “If our community thrives, we do, and vice versa. So we take a big interest in things that make Oswego fun and a good place to be.” Rudy’s sponsors Little League; the “Tour de Loop,” a yearly bike race; hockey leagues; and many other civic and recreational activities. levels, and heavy winter storms. “It’s important for the town, county, and state to all work together to do what we can to keep the lakeside an attraction, and the businesses along it able to keep going,” Livesey explains. With 1600 feet of waterfront, Livesey says he would like to extend his season so that customers could enjoy the food and the view year round, but recognizes that it will require the efforts of more than just one lakeside business to make that happen. With good reason, Livesey is proud of Rudy’s, and proud of being deeply connected to Oswego. “We’re part of Oswego,” he says, referring both to his family, and to the business. “We enjoy bringing a service to people that they like, one that they say is part of their memories of summer on the lake. And we do that as well as we possibly can. As my dad used to say, I cook fish. But I’m the best fish cook you know.”

Tippett’s Gastropub at Camillus Hills Golf Club continued from pg 15 were impressed by the beautiful modern look of the club house. We loved the huge wall of windows that overlooked the rolling hills and water features of the course and we noted the abundance of seating that the club house could accommodate, making it the perfect place for outings and events. Because the weather was absolutely perfect we decided that we would sit on the large deck area and enjoy the scenery and summer. We couldn’t help but notice that both the staff and the fellow patrons were all incredibly friendly. While looking at the menu we joked that with so many burger choices available, the Tippett’s Gastropub seems to have paid a (perhaps unconscious)homage to the land [Scotland] where golf was invented, by including Angus (the cows are another Scottish import) burgers in its Perfectly battered and fried onion cobb salad drizzled with eclectic menu. And in a rings paired with a chipotle aioli. homemade dijon dressing nod to the more infamous side of Scottish cuisine, you can start your meal with some beer-battered onion rings. Unlike the pubs of Scotland however; this gastropub has steered away from deep-frying everything and prides themselves on their gastropub style food. For those that don’t know, a gastropub is simply a pub that specializes in serving high-quality food. We began our meal with an order of the beer battered onion rings; each ring was dunked in a light and crispy beer batter sauce and fried to golden perfection. They were light, crispy and not at all greasy and perfectly paired with the chipotle aioli. For an entrée I decided on the Cobb salad; a plate of leafy greens piled high with grilled chicken, crispy bacon, hard boiled eggs, tomato, blue cheese and avocado drizzled with homemade Dijon dressing. The The Turkey Club with homemade chips dish was colorful, beautiful, and delicious. Kyle decided on the Turkey club served with homemade chips. This sandwich was gigantic and positively stuffed with turkey, bacon, lettuce, and tomato and slather in avocado aioli. The homemade chips were seasoned to perfection. We ended our meal with a lovely slice of chocolate mousse cake. Our meal was such a delight that we are already planning our next trip to Tippett’s Gastropub where we will certainly try the Flat Chocolate Mousse Cake Iron Steak served with jalapeno peach tomato salsa, spinach & grilled cornbread and the Saranac Glazed Pork Chops with whipped potatoes, spinach, marinated tomatoes, and grilled peaches. The Shadowy Horses by Susanna Kearsley continued from pg 10 little details that give the genre the name “cozy:” what was had for dinner, the changes in weather, the chatty housekeeper, the confused emotions and tangled conversations. And while this isn’t a murder mystery, there are a number of mysteries to be solved, not the least of which is who is The Sentinel, and what does he want? And with whom will Verity end up, if anyone? And does the team find the Ninth? And who is the one trying to throw a monkey wrench into the dig’s progress, and why? The writing is solid; the knowledge of Scotland (and Scots dialect) is excellent (and not over-done, thank goodness!), and the characters are strong without being annoying. Even the rather abrupt reveal at the end isn’t too contrived to be believed, and satisfies both the story and the reader. It’s not a new book (published 1997); but it’s one I’ll keep on my bookshelf to perhaps pull out some chilly evening for entertainment, and to remind me of my mom doing the same. That’s what a good cozy mystery is for, after all. And for your reference, the Yeats’ poem:

The Lion King When Disney began rolling out their live-action remakes of a few of their most endearing classics, I certainly had some mixed feelings. While I was intrigued by the possibility of witnessing a reimagining of stories that I had grown up with, there was also the nagging belief that such a blatant and unnecessary cash grab would only result in seething bitterness and colossal disappointment. My tune changed pretty quickly, however, with release of Jon Favreau’s THE JUNGLE BOOK. The film was a spellbinding take on the timeless Kipling tale, and the special effects were spellbinding. Since then, we’ve seen BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, DUMBO, and ALADDIN receive the live-action remake treatment and in July, perhaps the most anticipated of all, THE LION KING debuted to the tune of almost $200 million at the box-office. Favreau once again finds himself at the helm of a Disney remake, and with this iteration of THE LION KING, he has crafted a film that is not only a technical marvel, but superbly satisfying in every way. While the recent remake of DUMBO strayed mightily in terms of storyline and characters from the original Disney vision, THE LION KING is a virtual mirror of the 1994 classic. There are some who have faulted Favreau’s film for not doing more to evolve the story, but I found myself on the opposite end of this spectrum. Despite knowing each scene and virtually every line of dialogue (although, admittedly, there are some major differences, particularly in regards to Timon and Pumbaa) it didn’t detract from the original for me in any

In fact, I relished this familiarity (as I did when I saw the Broadway production) and found myself spellbound by its staggering technological achievements. Despite whatever criticisms people had with its storytelling, there is no denying that the special effects in THE LION KING are revolutionary. Each character looks profoundly lifelike, to the point where it effectively blurs the line between animation and realism. While you can see their lips moving, and your brain will register this fact, it’s easy to believe that the actions perpetrated by the animals is actually unfolding in reality. Their movements and mannerisms are fluid and natural, and fueled by the exceptional voice talents behind each character, they pay homage to their predecessors while standing uniquely on their own. Much like the original, this iteration of THE LION KING has moments of staggering beauty (the opening “Circle of Life” sequence), heart wrenching devastation (Mufasa’s slow-mo plummet), and laugh-out-loud hilarity (any sequence involving Timon and Pumbaa.) The dialogue exchanged between everyone’s favorite meerkat (voice by Billy Eichner) and warthog (voiced by Seth Rogen) are largely different from their source material, and these subtle tweaks provide moments of much needed brevity amidst the emotional turmoil that had unfolded prior to their introductions. As Zazu, John Oliver also delivers a number of laughs, bringing his biting trademark delivery to the stuffy and continued on pg 21

When we jump on a treadmill our heart starts pumping faster and our breathing accelerates. As we breathe faster, we increase the amount of oxygen in our blood. As our heart beats more quickly, our blood flow increases and our capillaries dilate allowing oxygenated blood to move towards working muscles. Over time, the heart becomes stronger just like any other muscle. With this strength comes efficiency as oxygen is delivered more effectively, hemoglobin levels rise, insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance improve, and mood-enhancing endorphins are released.

Building a Better Physique

It you only do cardio, it’s time to step off the treadmill and into the weight room! If building muscle is one of your fitness goals, weight lifting has to be incorporated into your routine. A cardio workout may burn more calories than a weight-training workout, but your metabolism will stay elevated for longer after a weight-bearing workout. As we age, we lose muscle mass. In fact, we can begin to lose as much as three to five percent per decade after the age of thirty. Unfortunately, this loss of muscle can result in a decrease in overall strength. This unfavorable combination can lead to poor balance and coordination, decreased mobility, and a greater risk of falls – resulting in fractures. Strength training can turn you into a superhero! It’s known for its ability to build lean muscle mass and increase the strength of connective tissue, muscles, and tendons. When you do any form of weight training (including using your own body weight), you overload your muscles, causing little tears in your muscle fibers. Our bodies repair these tears when you’re resting, and this helps muscles grow in size and strength. The result is thicker muscle fibers and greater muscle mass. It’s not just about becoming a muscle-bound mass of a human being. Strength training can improve motor performance, decrease the risk of injuries, help maintain weight loss, reduce the symptoms of many chronic conditions, and improve stability, mobility and balance. It also improves your ability to perform daily activities. You will be able to work harder and longer with ease. By building lean muscle mass you can boost your metabolism and burn more calories over the course of the day. Furthermore, picking up those weights a few times a week has been shown to not only slow bone loss, but reverse bone loss and improve bone density.

In Conclusion:

You should exercise because it’s good for you regardless of how you’re doing it. Even the guy in the squat rack doing bicep curls is doing more for himself than the guy sitting in front of the TV! Can you lead a healthy life when only doing cardio? Most likely. Can you do the same with strength? Sure, probably. As is the case with many aspects of fitness, balance is the key to mixing both cardio and strength training into your routine. While these two modes of exercise are frequently considered incompatible, when scheduled properly, they will work together to help you reach your fitness goals. So, what’s the bottom line? While there’s not a one-size-fits all prescription for success, keep moving, keep grinding, and keep up the great work! Your heart, health, and muscles will thank you. Good luck to you. Fellow cast members Donald Glover (Simba), Beyonce (Nala), and Chiwetel Ejiofor (Scar) fill the formidable paws of the trio of felines that shoulder the lion share of the dramatics, and with the assistance of the incomparable James Earl Jones (who once again portrays the powerful and proud Mufasa) craft a family film that is far more emotionally resonant than most. There are whimsical moments involving these characters that tenderly project the importance of familial bonds and friendship, and then, moments later, scenes of devastating betrayal and horror that will shake virtually every viewer, regardless of age. While it is a seemingly impossible task to match the profound impact of the original film, Favreau has crafted a satisfying, entertaining, and thrilling summer spectacle that will not only appease established fans, but will likely win over a whole new generation of moviegoers. A Blonde and Her Phone Charger I kind of enjoy admitting when I’ve been dumb about technology, because it also says “hey, I learned something, even if it took me a long time!” My first frustration with phone chargers came with Apple deciding to change its charger port format. You remember that wide charging port from long ago, unique to Apple, and you probably remember when they changed to the Lightning charger and every single cord you owned had to be replaced – and they weren’t cheap. So, upstairs, downstairs, travel and/or office, car charger – all useless. I lived through that, unhappily. But then I discovered that the after market versions of the Apple charger simply weren’t adequate, whether it was the wall adapter plug or the cord itself. Often within a short time it was failing to work. And

I did try every combination of cord, in particular – woven, long, short, heavy duty, cheap, expensive. If it wasn’t Apple (at twice the price) it didn’t work for long, and even the Apple-supplied version wasn’t a forever purchase. That’s not surprising, of course, because you have a port with metal in the connection, and this will heat and cool and conduct a charge and eventually you have to get a new one. I learned about cleaning the port on the phone (it can get filled with debris) and the end of the charging cord. Then there was the problem of, particularly when traveling, wanting an adapter that would handle the phone and other devices that used a charger, whether a mini-USB, or a C-Type, or any other typical device charger. I also learned that you have to be sure the voltage and wattage are correct. Apple and other devices don’t necessarily require the same combination, and too much (or too little) can create problems. Even the “smart” adapters, which claim to recognize the requirements of the device plugged into its 2 to 6 ports doesn’t necessarily do a good job. When the time came to upgrade to my latest phone, I also wanted to solve this problem, but while I managed to weed out adapters and cords that weren’t working of the dozens (literally) that I had lying around, I was certain it was a matter of time before I was frustrated with a phone not charging properly – again. Enter the wireless charger. That’s actually not an absolutely correct name for the device. Wireless charging isn’t new. Genius pioneer Nikola Tesla demonstrated magnetic resonant coupling in the late 19th century —the ability to transmit electricity through the “air” by creating a magnetic field between two circuits— a transmitter, and a receiver. For this to work with your device, from phone to tablet to laptop, the device has to be equipped with a receiver. Then, you need an appropriate transmitter – the wireless charger. Most newer phones will be equipped with the receiver, and the trans-

mitter is typically a small flattish disk or perhaps a pad that can easily sit on your desktop or bedside table and begin charging your phone when you place the phone flat on its surface. Because the charger isn’t transmitting a huge charge, the device needs to be in close proximity, i.e., surface to surface. For larger devices, larger chargers will be required, but for now, we’ll just contemplate the phone issue. (I have never had as much trouble with my tablet or laptop, though for people who travel a lot and work un-plugged, this is worth a look. I do have a solar enhanced power cell that I plan to use when I’m “off the grid” for more than a few hours. Fully charged, you can run your laptop off it, charge your phone, and by placing it so that light falls on the solar collectors, you can trickle charge it whenever its exposed to sunlight. It’s a phone-sized companion for hiking or traveling when other options aren’t handy.) My wireless charger worked beautifully, and I was delighted not to be tugging cords every time I picked up my phone, yet at the same time knowing it would have been charging as it lay idle. And then – I got a new pop socket for my new phone since the old case and socket were no longer useful. And of course, my phone won’t charge! Well, a little research (I did say this was a Blonde Adventure, right?) would have told me that in order for the charge to pass through the phone cover, case, and socket, the socket has to be able to conduct the charge. I had chosen mine simply because it was “cute,” and matched my phone case. But while it’s not ideal, you can obtain pop sockets that will allow wireless charging. Keep all of that in mind when you convert, which you probably have already – but if you haven’t, it will be one of the best tech updates you gift yourself all summer.

Nothing says Summer-lovin’ in CNY quite like watching a Syracuse Mets baseball game and drinking a cold one while wolfing down a Hofmann’s hot dog slathered in any number of tasty condiments, or perhaps you’d rather chase a Lupo’s chicken spiedie with a brewski? Either way, both options are available to you during Craft Beer Fridays at NBT Bank Stadium this summer!

What are Craft Beer Fridays, do you ask?

During this promotion, $20 gets you one ticket to a Friday home game this season, seated in the 200-level section, and comes with two 16oz craft beer vouchers. There is also the option to pay $22 per ticket to be seated in the 100-level section. (As an FYI, you

must be 21 & older to purchase these promotional tickets – so remember to bring your ID with you to the game!) There are two ways to get tickets: either call the ticket office at 315-474-7833 to purchase your tickets, where they’ll be held at Will Call for pickup on game day, or go to the Mets official website www.syracusemets.com and purchase online. If purchasing online there is a nominal $1.50/ticket convenience fee; you’ll also have the option to print the tickets at home, pick the tickets up at Will Call or have the tickets sent straight to your mobile phone where the barcode can be scanned at the gate. Of course, if it’s a last minute decision to go catch a game, you can always purchase tickets at the Box Office on the evening of the game itself. Also, something to keep in mind – If you’re going as a couple or a group and you’re purchasing tickets online or over the phone, one person will need to pony up the cash in order to all be seated together. (I would hold the beer vouchers hostage until everyone pays you back, but that’s just me.)

The Hops Spot Craft Beer Room (sponsored by, you guessed it, Captain Obvious – The Hops Spot, the same restaurant located in Armory Square) is located on the first base side of the stadium on the same level as all of your food choices. It’s small, (but houses so much beer!) therefore you may have a small wait in line, but the traffic flows in and out pretty quickly.

To Bleed or Not to Bleed continued from pg 22 Diabetes Trial, enrolled 15,000 adults 40 years of age or older in the United Kingdom. After a follow-up of 7.4 years the aspirin group had a lower percentage of people having a serious vascular event than the placebo group but this benefit was offset by an increased risk of major bleeding. The numbers needed to treat would be 91 and 112 respectively from which they concluded that aspirin had no net benefit. Finally, the Aspirin And Reducing Events In The Elderly Trial, examined the effects of 5 years of daily low-dose aspirin on community-dwelling adults 70 years or older in the U.S. and Australia. There were no differences in the primary endpoint of disability free survival, dementia, cardiovascular deaths, or hospitalization. However, the aspirin group had a higher rate of major hemorrhage and higher all-cause mortality. So there are three recent good sized trials that question the use of aspirin in primary prevention. If you have already had a heart attack or stroke that’s a different story … stay on your aspirin. But the rest of you —schooled to take your aspirin and your multivitamin every day like trained seals, believing, somehow, that this would protect you despite your many and manifold dietary indiscretions— may want to think twice about the daily aspirin ritual. Your doctor should be having this conversation with you on a regular basis. -What are your risks and how can you best modify them? Lifestyle changes have always trumped medications but how much time does your doctor spend talking about this and making a plan to improve your health. For that matter, has your doctor assessed your 10 year Cardiovascular risk using the American Heart Association / American College of Cardiology risk calculator? How else are you deciding whether or not to take aspirin or take a statin? Personally, I think the calculator grossly overestimates your risks and therefore favors statin use in most people — and practically everyone over the age of 70 regardless of other risk factors— but at least it’s a place to start your cholesterol and aspirin conversation. Did I emphasize that dietary and exercise changes are far more effective than any medication in changing your risks of dying from the most common causes of death? It’s easy to recommend some medication, it’s harder, takes longer, and is more involved, to talk to patients about changing their behavior but that’s where the real benefits are. Stop depending on your doctor to manage your illness and enlist them in your efforts to improve your wellness. Your office visits should be a review of your diet and exercise, a conversation about improving your lifestyle, serial evaluations of your efforts long before you and your doctor turn to pills. Getting back to the question of aspirin … When I am asked about aspirin I suggest people take it religiously … one tablet of any dose once a week on Sunday. Until next month … get well and stay well.

They have up to 72 different craft beer cans available and up to 4 draft beers running at once. In addition, at least once a month, a local brewery will be promoting a “tap takeover” of said draft lines. This is a wonderful way to promote and support local business and give ticketholders even more of an opportunity to experience great craft beer. New for this season, Mikkeller NYC, based in Queens, has also formed a partnership with the Syracuse Mets. Mikkeller NYC is part of a larger conglomerate that includes Mikkeller Brewing in San Diego, CA and Mikkeller Brewing in Copenhagen, Denmark. Points on the Map Philosopher and theologian Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855), wrote that life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards. Internet sources, such as the Encyclopedia of Philosophy suggest Kierkegaard, who wrote about religion and faith from other that the mainstream traditional perspective, lived a life marked by melancholy, a yesteryear term for depression. He spent his final weeks in a hospital, dying young, sources suggest, from: perhaps from unknown causes, perhaps from tuberculosis, perhaps from complications resulting from a childhood fall from a tree, and perhaps from “writing himself to death.” Euphemistically and metaphorically, it could be said that Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi “wrote himself to death.” Reporting can be dangerous. And, metaphor and simile can substitute for plain speaking. In ideologically mixed discussions I say “God is love” as a metaphoric summary of my belief that all of the energy of which we and our universe are comprised, including but not limited to air, sunlight, plants, neurotransmitters, hormones, blood, bone, our senses and consciousness are intended to function together so we can live fully and in good health. Pain and anger, both of which feel stronger than health and peace, signal us that something’s wrong. We’re wired to keep safe.

Psychological circumstantiality occurs when a person seemingly talks aimlessly, providing irrelevant details while not getting to the point. Of course, the point of any discussion is often a matter of participants’ end game goals and perspectives. One person’s valid point and is another’s irrelevancy. Whether or not everyone agrees on any talking point, points can be valid and differ. Detailed narratives provide points, counterpoints, and context. All points are surrounded by other points. One point about Geschwind Syndrome is that it is debatable whether Geschwind Syndrome is or is not a disorder; Geschwind is sometimes associated, but not always, with temporal lobe Jamal Khashoggi epilepsy. What’s my point? Throughout history, worldwide, people have suffered from physical and mental ills and injuries whose origins were unknown or known but not discussed. One condition much in the news, Lyme Disease, has many mind-body manifestations. Here is a short list: rash, fever, severe headaches and neck stiffness, arthritis with severe joint pain and swelling (particularly the knees and other large joints), facial palsy (loss of muscle tone or droop on one or both sides of the face),intermittent pain in tendons, muscles, joints, and bones, heart palpitations or an irregular heart beat (Lyme carditis), episodes of dizziness

or shortness of breath, inflammation of the brain and spinal cord, nerve pain, shooting pains, numbness, or tingling in the hands or feet, problems with short-term memory. Amy Tan, author of the “Joy Luck Club,” wrote that her Lyme symptoms included hallucinations, getting lost in familiar places, speech problems, blood sugar fluctuations, insomnia, and fatigue. Conspiracy theorists have suggested that the US government created Lyme Disease. Lyme Disease is named for the Connecticut town in which, in the 1970’s, similar symptoms were identified in enough patients located in close enough proximity in location and time to get someone to notice. News, including conspiracy theories doesn’t always travel fast. It was from the July 17 edition of Newsweek, which Bill Maher circulated to his fans and followers via Facebook, that I learned that the House of Representatives is requiring the Department of Defense to investigate allegations that the Pentagon “weaponized” ticks with the spirochete delivered bacteria that causes Lyme’s Disease’s misery. Lyme Connecticut is just across the Long Island Sound from Plum Island Animal Disease Center, one site where, Newsweek reports, bacterial weapons research occurred. And, however long tick-borne diseases have been around, the US Center for Disease Control Lyme Disease map shows that Lyme Disease is concentrated in one area and that area’s land-based epicenter includes Plum Island in the Long Island sound. Books written about tick research at Plum Island have perhaps been prematurely dismissed as mere conspiracy theories. Going forward, people living near Plum Island and points beyond should hear about back then.

Heroin - Law - Compassion Heroin is truly the playground of the Devil PROLOGUE: “Heroin – Punishment/Rehabilitation (Mandated)” I believe it is an absolute disgrace that we have never built a confinement rehabilitation facility especially for Heroin addiction. Requesting voluntary rehabilitation in lieu of jail (with jail following failure) without advocating confinement rehabilitation centers, is the idea of those that know little about the power of addiction. This is not a successful approach for addiction – especially heroin abuse. The choice should be regular jail or a jail designed completely around rehabilitation. The negligence in the Criminal Justice arena is reckless, cruel and socially incredibly foolish. It is well known our jails do not work. They create criminals and enhance further drug use. America has 330 million people with 2,193.798 imprisoned. China has one billion, 420 million people with 1,548.498 imprisoned. On September 28, 1948 (in Paris, France) Eleanor Roosevelt received a standing ovation for her speech on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with fundamental freedoms and fairness that applied to everyone on earth. In this vital arena of Human Rights, where is greatness today?

“You treat us like a dad. Lots of us ain’t got no dad, you treat us like a dad.” I reached over the seat and shook his hand while staring into his eyes. And, in that man to man way that young men have, he quietly left the taxi. I drove a taxi in Syracuse for several years. I roamed the streets six nights a week, twelve hours a night. Few, other than policemen accumulate inner city, inter-human experiences on such a personal level. I learned many things on the streets. Perhaps most importantly I learned that those involved with drugs are seldom inherently bad individuals. Most are victims. They are born into a culture of disadvantage. Poverty and lack of opportunity are extreme. Parental guidance is often severely impaired and even when present in this culture of poverty the streets usually win. The devastation of drugs is part of life and is viewed in the inner city with little principled difference than alcohol and cigarettes have in suburban communities. The answer does not lie in 6-by-8 cells.

It is my hope to highlight thinking on a local level regarding rehabilitation processes. The rest of the column will justify why. Currently violent felons have access to Rehabs in the Big House (State Prisons for Serious Crimes). This in-house access is not available for misdemeanor crimes that result in stays at the Justice Center or Jamesville. The kid brought up in the “drug culture of inner-city streets” where addiction is everywhere does not have this early “in-house” comprehensive option. Syracuse Community Treatment Court (Drug Court) is an excellent tool and I am sure it helps the few ready to succeed. For those emotionally prepared for voluntary recovery, and are able to benefit, it is a priceless program. However too few opt for Drug Court and fewer are able to adhere to the strict disciplines required. A rehab option/ mandate —to a confinement/rehabilitation center (which we do not have)— while serving misdemeanor time would be a priceless, compassionate, life reforming and life-saving tool for users, judges and society. It also would provide judges a place to mandate the vast majority too weak for drug court opportunities. It is common for addicts to do several months or more for misdemeanors, several times, and each time return immediately to addiction (especially in the world of heroin). The system accomplishes nothing here except exacting a “punishment without value” from susceptible and misguided young minds that have been overexposed to society’s failures. There is a severe cruelty here that Law should protect Americans against. There is “nothing” wrong with the justice system being able to “mandate” rehabilitation for any crime with a drug component or when there is any evidence of a weakened state due to drugs. The essence of this article is to encourage law that would allow a facility to fulfill this mandate. A voluntary component as a determinant is far too ineffective standing alone. Inner city addicts do not have a feel for the wrong or the long range hell that has invaded their life. They have formed in this culture. They need to be shown a value system. They need to be taught these basics to have a chance before they are too far gone. From the age of recognition drugs have been a part of their lives. It isn’t folks here and there that suffer from addiction. In large portions of every side of town; every city block is permeated with drugs. It is a deadly humanity-decimating epidemic. Drug crime among youth is the significant part of incarceration in both the Justice Center and Jamesville (and the Big House). Jamesville is a revolving door for the addicted. After losing much of their youth to drugs continued on pg 42

The system must be able to promptly intervene at low level crime if the desire is to constructively reform the individual to live in society. Realizing that nothing good can start until you make a beginning – why create a full-blown criminal first? Where supply is divided into thousands of little dealers is where real criminals make their real money. These points (and those paid off to allow this) must be found and not only eliminated but traced back to origins, decimating all structures along this path. Once again with great despair, this little paper gives you the answer. To say “we can’t” or “we tried” is an American failure of the highest order. We can if we try, pure and simple. This reckless permeation that destroys young American minds will begin to end when we decide we have the “will” to match care with action. Leadership itself must be carefully rethought. We have a DEA. Find out why this department is useless. What are we missing? The attraction to drugs is great when there is so little opportunity. Unemployment rates among youth in poor communities often reach 50% or more. In many cities and/ or communities, they have been left to squander and they know it. What the courts often miss is that the drug culture (and that money can be made) is ingrained during formative years. Why not implement other systems during this critical forming period of life? Target with great expertise these formative years of children. Parents, pre-schools, schools, movies, cartoons and any youth social activity can all be addressed in ways to form correct drug related thinking at the same time children learn of God and Country. Syracuse is the perfect size to implement and test systems. Mayor Walsh: if done well,

we can set the standard for others around the country. What a legacy, to be the Mayor that shows the land the way. All it would take is to champion a Confinement/Rehabilitation Center in our city and a good PR person. If you want a point man let me know. Heroin addicts wake up each day, immediately feeling a near irresistible need for a fix. 70,000 addict’s overdose and die annually. 47,000 from opiates. The disease causes one to pick at their body. The face, legs and bellies of most addicts are partially shredded with current bloody digs and past scars. And we lock them up in droves. Usually for crimes committed to get a fix. The system makes extraordinarily little effort to rehabilitate and instead demands anti-productive and cruel punishment from these dejected and deeply afflicted human beings. People highly susceptible to becoming more imbedded in the criminal culture that jail culture teaches. I will leave you with a reality. Picture a wholesome young man or woman that you know. Picture them 3 years later, scary skinny, in the streets, gaunt features, battered tear jerking looks, phobic hair pulling and twisting, body picked and scarred and often bleeding, sunken dark eyes, dejected, by now with a history of stealing or manipulating in any way for the drug, no school, no work, unable to perceive or properly care about nearness to death, the beauty of life they once knew gone. No direct way to stop them. Feel the hopelessness. Such analogy is seldom appropriate, but in this instance, with this national scale of horror, I think maybe so. I am reminded of a train to Auschwitz loaded with human cargo. With nearly every avenue for survival plugged. Because the good were not trying. Now picture the wakes.
