But, this isn’t true at all. Once you start, you’ll find that your beer pairs well with a lot of food items instead of just hot wings and your local pub’s pizza. If truth be told, as compared to wine, beer is far more congenial for many foods. Here, the science is putting the right beer with the right dish in order to create an inspiring dining experience instead of making conscious pairing, which is just a waste of time. Defining Our Terms I don’t remember when I first heard the term “trickle-down economics.” Wikipedia associates the term with “Reaganomics” and “laissez-faire capitalism,” a term I first heard in social studies class and in relation to Theodore Roosevelt’s campaign to break up monopolies. Vertical monopolies controlled all supply and production aspects of their businesses while horizontal monopolies took over other businesses to eliminate compe-

The French term “laissez-faire” translates roughly as “let it go” or “let it pass.” Laissez-faire economics allowed for free markets but not unbridled greed; Republicans, Democrats and Progressives disagreed about limits. I also remember this: back when my teacher wrote “laissez-faire” on the blackboard, the boys in the back of the classroom snickered and whispered, “you’re laissez-faire” and

We think about ourselves and our experiences using the words and concepts we know at that time. When most infants are trying to personally address “Mama” and “Dada,” they are also noticing the vibrations, facial expressions and tones of voice associated with the judgements “good” and “bad.” What is good, bad or neither differs in different situations. Words have the power to comfort, threaten and convince. It helps to know the meaning and origins of the words and terms that we use and to pay close attention to words spoken to us and about us. Buzzwords, memes and platitudes can stereotype and then marginalize people. The term “white privilege” popped up in many places during the 2016 presidential campaign. Many “white” people, perhaps the very white people who provided the current president with enough votes to leverage an Electoral College defeat of the candi-

(Of course, the bit of gold needn’t be stamped, but it was a way of assuring that the bit of metal was gold.) Eventually, banks were established. The banks kept the treasure, presumably under carefully protected control. And in exchange, the banks issued notes that people could trade – whoever held the note at the end of a series of trades could, if he chose, take it to the bank that issued the note and demand its value in gold (or silver, or whatever the “standard” might be). Finally, the governments of various nations took it on themselves to grant a “charter” to a given bank to print and control the paper that was issued. This bank became the central, or official, bank of that government – and each nation had its own paper money. I won’t wander off into counterfeiting and all the problems attendant with paper money – but when things got really complicated was when “money” (paper scrip) was divorced from actual, physical gold held in the vaults in a bank (or a You can enter into the Bitcoin world with something as simple as selling a book and treasury) and became mere accepting Bitcoin in exchange. representation of a share in the presumed wealth of a nation. avoid including here for spoiler purposes, made perfect sense and is aligned with what I inferred that MOTHER! was about. In this regard, I truly believe that he achieved exactly what he set out to do. I can also certainly understand the argument that you shouldn’t need a scene-by-scene explanation in order to enjoy it. Whether you love or hate MOTHER!, there is little doubt that you will have strong feelings about it either way. This should not come as a surprise for those familiar with Aronofsky’s work, because, for the most part, he has been challenging audiences for the past two decades now. He is obviously not concerned with achieving the adoration from the masses, but rather, a filmmaker who likes to push boundaries and challenge those willing to watch. A special thanks goes to Regal Cinemas at Destiny USA for allowing me to attend this month’s film.

not going to be a spoiler, but I can say that there is a great deal of effort and artistry that goes into the creation of this five-week event. It all started 13 years ago … an eerie anniversary for this year! When I asked Grazie how this all came about, he replied, “Well, concession season ends on Labor Day for the most part, and I just wanted to have more fun. I had seen other hayrides and stuff, but I wanted to create something better. I love haunted houses, and I wanted to be able to have the concept to survive despite the weather.” If you’ve been on a hayride, you know how easy it is to get caught in some nasty weather, but inside the cattle stalls at the fairground, Fright Nights go on rain, snow or shine. A credit card could be used as your promissory note: give me the goods and I promise to pay. Bitcoin is, essentially, the first decentralized digital currency (no bank, no central repository - and importantly – no single administrator). Because of their inherent security —among other things there is no “there” there; like the Internet itself, the information is broken into addressable parts, distributed redundantly, and can be reassembled when required— blockchains are suitable for event recording, medical records, and other records management (like identity), or even food traceability (where was this lettuce grown and how did it get to your grocery store or restaurant?) and certainly for medicine and vaccination lots and other information storage and retrieval where there is a clear benefit to the properties of a blockchain.

big winner at the Emmy’s, taking home eight awards. The other, THE NIGHT OF, stands as one of the most intense, engaging, and thought-provoking series in the history of the network. When you look legendary titles such as THE SOPRANOS, SIX FEET UNDER, BOARDWALK EMPIRE, THE WIRE, and of course, GAME OF THRONES, it is incredible to realize that THE NIGHT OF can stand alongside any of these beloved entities. Nasir “Naz” Kahn (Emmy winner Riz Ahmed) is a 20-year old college student like any other in New York City. When he is invited by a member of his school’s basketball team to attend a party, he knows it could be a night of epic proportions. As he is set to leave, his buddy that was going with him pulls out at the last minute. Not wanting to miss the destined-to-be legendary bash, he takes his father’s taxi cab and heads into the city. The recently reopened Central New York favorite from days past has managed to do what few have done, they have perfectly merged the past with the present. The interior is bright, clean, and modern with nods to the past including several fireplaces and a baby grand piano. This trend is also apparent in each dish they serve with new approaches to classic favorites. The Fireside Inn is located at 2347 West Genesee Rd, Route 370 in Baldwinsville. The Write Stuff by NANCY ROBERTS
Shadows of the Western Door by Mason Winfield published in 1997 I came across this book in my mother’s extensive library as we were packing her house up when she downsized. It was a signed copy, so I presume she met the author. I had been aware that Western New York was awash in mystical places and happenings – if you consider the region from roughly Seneca Lake across to Lake Erie, and encompassing the full height of the state, from Lake Ontario down to the Pennsylvania border, you will have The Fox Sisters, Lilydale, Roycroft, Murder Hill and the odd town of Friendship. Digging deeper still, though, we learn that the city of Buffalo, much like Washington, DC, is laid out with a presumable purpose (DC supposedly recreates the Masonic compass and square), and some think the same might be said of Buffalo. But the mysteries of the Western Door date back a good deal further than the founding of Buffalo —and include the Seneca Nation, the Author Mason Winfield mysteries of the “White” and the cover of his Natives, and signs and indications of early Celtic book about the hauntand/or Viking visitations ings of Western NY. to the region— including stones with perfectly manufactured holes in them, that were found at a time and in a place where no such artifact of its kind should have been found, within the capability of visitors from another continent, but not within the capacity of the indigenous people to create. Winfield explores the regions many UFO Call ahead sightings, Bigfoot and other mystery monsters, and proto-crop circles (pre-1920s, so for

well before the crop circle craze). Broken into sections more or less along general topics, he reserves one section for the many haunted locations – standard “spooks,” including haunted Fort Niagara (I have visited there myself, and can attest to its odd feel, though much of that is probably due to some of the gruesome stories about the treatment of prisoners there), and of course of large segment about the Fox Sisters, who summoned “Mr. Splitfoot,” and who learned the many tricks of the Spiritualism fashion that swept the region in the mid-1800s (casting one’s voice, lifting a table with a conveniently placed knee, cracking a knuckle near a resonant background to amplify its sound), and the slightly more credible though much less famous Davenport Brothers. What compendium of mystical happenings at the Western Door would be complete without Joseph Smith, his tablets, mysterious glasses, and visitation from the Angel Moroni, birthing the whole religion of Mormonism, still active to this day – and not without its famous and well-placed adherents? I was amused and intrigued to learn that Father Nelson Henry Tales of the Fox Sisters are part of the mystic. Baker of Lackawanna (near Buffalo) was associated with Padre Pio-like miracles – amused because he established a home for “wayward children,” with which slightly scary place my sister and I were threatened by exasperated parents when our naughty behavior reached a peak. From there, his life quickly spirals out of control. THE NIGHT OF is unlike any procedural that I can recall. The stunning realism on display can be attributed to countless factors. Presented in stunning high definition, the viewer sees the smudges and streaks on the windows in the police station, the rust on the prison bars, and the peeling paint on the rails. We are presented with a rare glimpse into Riz Ahmed, won an Emmy for his role. the harsh and terrifying realities of the criminal justice system. From intake, to booking, to holding cells, to courtrooms, and finally, to the disparaging depths of Rikers prison, over the course of 8 flawless episodes, we are put in Naz’s shoes. Rather than being a simply omnipotent observer to the events that unfold, directors Steven Zaillian and James Marsh put you in the midst of the action. This allows the viewers to become more emotionally invested in Naz’s tortured existence, and certainly causes to you be far more sympathetic to his plight. Despite the avalanche of evidence, and the fact that we never see the crime committed, you can’t help but align yourself with the accused, and hope against hope for his exoneration and redemption. The performances by the entire cast of THE NIGHT OF are impeccable. Ahmed, who won an Emmy for this role, crafts a character that is enduringly sympathetic. Throughout his journey, he must not only adapt, but make life-altering decisions in order to survive.

TRIVIA
As Naz’s lawyer John Stone, John Turturro provides what may very well be the best performance of his illustrious career. This, when you think about it, is a fairly remarkable fact. Turturro is a Hollywood journeyman who has been providing unforgettable turns for decades. As the beleaguered defense attorney who finally stumbles onto the case he has always yearned for, Turturro treads the fine line between hero and heel. In the early episodes, more than anything else, he longs to get paid. Throughout the course of each passing installment, however, he begins to believe that Naz could actually be innocent. On the opposite end of the spectrum, veteran Detective Box (Bill Camp) proclaims that he is certain that Naz is guilty of the charges levied against him. Box, who is methodical and tremendously thorough, is determined to make his “one last case” end in the prosecution of a murderer. Outwardly, he says all the right things, and sells District Attorney Helen Weiss (Jeannie Berlin) on Naz’s guilt. Digging deeper into his psyche, it seems as if Box may be a little less convinced than he is willing to admit. HBO veteran Michael Kenneth Williams (THE WIRE, BOARDWALK EMPIRE) also provides a searing performance as Freddy Knight, a former professional boxer who now runs Rikers from the confines of his cell. THE NIGHT OF, for me, is one of the greatest feats of television I have ever seen. Every character, sequence, setting, and sentence uttered is as engrossing drama as you will witness on the small screen. Hauntingly beautiful to watch, it is the type of story that forces you to cringe, cry, flinch, and laugh. It is shockingly brutal in one moment and emotionally profound in the next. The second an episode ends, you leap at the chance to press play to move on to the following installment. At the same time, to take it all in over one or two big binges, it is difficult to fully appreciate the complexities that have just unfolded. It is a challenging adventure that refuses to deliver straight forward answers, and forces the viewers to HAPPY HOUR DAILY 5-7PM ponder questions of morality, guilt, and innocence. It shines an unflinching light what it truly means to be presumed guilty from the moment you are arrested, and causes you to reflect on what you may do if you were placed in Naz’s unfortunate shoes. Changing the Landscape of Healthy Eating continued from pg 19 recommendation. A recommendation based on real science and one that can BE MEASURED. That’s right, of course the only way to know if the diet works for you is to try the diet but your doctor can independently test you for inflammatory markers and then, when you change your diet, can retest for inflammatory markers and see if in fact the markers of inflammation have changed. There is nothing placebo about it. This is science. Dr. Gundry’s contention is that most of us are from Northern European ancestry and we have come to North America and our eating proteins found in the foods that create an immune response. This immune
Now in 2017 the list of medicines that causes of reduction in blocked arteries remains at 0.0. The statins and drugs like it can slow the progression of blocked arteries but they have not been able to show reduction in blockages. response causes inflammation which manifests as heart disease making your cholesterol sticky, dementia making your brain inflamed, arthritis because of inflammation in the joints etc. If your healthcare provider still believes that statins work by lowering cholesterol they haven’t been doing enough research because statins work by the action of lowering inflammation not lowering cholesterol. The new listed drugs to treat cholesterol these PCSK9 inhibitors lower your cholesterol by 70% which is a very dramatic and yet they lower heart attack rate in people that are at the highest risk but only 1.5%. Very very unimpressive and inconsistent Raw wheat, especially wheat germ, is high in lectins, with around 300 mcg with cholesof wheat lectins per gram. However, it appears that the lectins are almost terol being the completely eliminated by cooking and processing. primary cause of heart disease. As I have said many times it’s not your cholesterol level but how sticky your cholesterol is. Smoking makes cholesterol sticky. Diabetes makes cholesterol sticky. Being a couch potato makes cholesterol sticky. As important, if not more important, may be the foods you are eating. That’s right. You can have a dramatic and profound effect on your health without spending a lot of money at the doctor’s office. You don’t have to join a secret club. You don’t have to take special rare supplements. You don’t have to use a special tool or have a special procedure. You can learn a lot about the diet from YouTube or you can buy the Dr Gundry’s book but that’s about the extent of the expenses. The hardest part of the diet is giving up the stuff that you know and love like wheat, simple sugars, sodas of all types, eggplant, corn, tomatoes, potatoes etc. You give up foods that are not good for you and you get better health, less cancer, less heart disease, less dementia etc. … I think that’s a great trade off. So , if you know anyone who is suffering from poor health or you want to try to improve your health give the low lectin diet a try and see for yourself. Next month we talk about the bugs in your gut … Your biome and how vital they also are to your health and well being. Until then get well … Stay well.

There were no Democrats inside – The Westcott Incident Please vote for Juanita Perez Williams for Mayor, November 7th … No one caught on. Something very wrong and very disturbing was underway and no one caught on – except Juanita Perez Williams. It is sad that some of our finest did not see. Sad because even some of our best reporters failed to see. Without comprehending the absurd essence of what was really happening, they took Juanita to task, for realizing “What it means to be a Democrat in America”. There is nothing American about bamboozling the people. Dems for Ben, they called this event held on Westcott Street on September 21st, as though Democrats can be

treatment. These are the reasons why Democrats were across the street at the Westcott event. It would be a travesty to watch a clear opportunist try to fool those in great need and pretend to share their values when in truth, in any event, their beliefs and interests will be discarded. someone that will fight for the happiness of every single Syracuse citizen and the betterment of every Syracuse neighborhood: Juanita Perez Williams. I recently read articles by two reporters that I hold in high regard. Ken Jackson and Chris Baker. They prompted this article in response. It is my hope, fully understanding, as I have erred similarly, to respectfully make an effort that may help everyone capture what was really going on that day. Our people are at stake. Gentlemen, not only did no wrong take place on Westcott St. but the degrading nature of the Walsh effort to deceive the vulnerable was very wrong. The event demanded a presence of truth. In America’s past, too many grave wrongs endured, from racism of the worst order, to the sublimation of women. These matters were so common that society simply accepted them without even thinking about the gravity of the wrongs. The same principle applies here. We are so used to Political wrongs, that defaming the honor and beliefs of Democrats wasn’t even regarded, even while this defamation was underway and in glaring view. Juanita noticed. Her Dad taught her well. And a true Democratic presence brought all of this to light. It was right and necessary. We are so used to Politicians and their nonsense that we are very suspect. Our lack of trust is ingrained. Even when the elite are under our nose, we are suspect. It is hard to recognize when someone truly very special is in the arena. When that rare individual, that you seldom see in a lifetime is present. The reporters I refer to know what we do with words. We all know we can pick a side and make it look good. Truth and justice is critical to one that knows the pen. I am offering a rare truth. Rare because real embracing, inclusive leadership is rare. that has been a very sad force opposing everything listed above. They are the party that claims inclusiveness with words and divisiveness and with deceitful deeds. What happened on Westcott Street was an effort to attract Democrats by duping them. Be sure the entirety of his effort is to deceitfully use people his philosophy neglects, to win. Democrats don’t stand by and watch those capable of this conduct abuse those you love. You will never see the day Ben Walsh will admit he is in favor of what is listed above. He is so far removed from Democrats that this event on Westcott St. was a usurping scandal in dire need of exposure. It was not an honorable political event. For starters kids will live that otherwise will die. Please peruse Juanita’s 100-day plan at: www.JuanitaforMayor.com I would like to conclude with a brief story. It is a story of hope. Inspired by the presence of a single woman that has won their hearts: Juanita. –Hope that refuses to die in the hearts of those demeaned by the race of their birth, and have suffered the consequences of the status quo, failing over and over again to meaningfully address their plight and leaving them behind. In this arena, over and over again, I found great beauty.

If you hear me things will change as never before. Between 1809 East Fayette St. and 2100 East Fayette there are 14 apartment buildings. During the primary, I arose one day and drove to 2100 East Fayette St. There were small crowds everywhere. Young men, women, Mom’s and Dad’s and kids. They were a bit taken to see a white man moving about as I did. I walked up to the first group and said I am here for your future. through the buildings placing palm cards on each door, speaking to people in the halls. One fellow was in a hurry. He said, “what can you tell me that will change my mind? I watched these politicians lie all of my life. They do nothing for us. I said, JFK, Martin Luther King, “Juanita.” He looked at me with dead sincerity, reading me. He said, “I will vote for her.” I finished the buildings East of Westmoreland talking to everyone along the way. One beautiful experience after another. I have story after story after talking to these wonderful people. They could not believe this white man was there. They listened and they questioned and I was dearly humbled by the beauty of watching hope of the neglected take form before my eyes. I went to my car and pulled up to 1809 East Fayette and parked in the rear. I went back to the first building on the block and worked my way to 1809. I went door to door, floor to floor, talking and joking and conveying my message that something special is happening. And to please vote. At the end of the day I dropped off my last palm card and went to my car. As I was leaving I saw a gathering of about 40 people at the last building entrance. They were not there when I went through that building just a little while before. It was about 50 feet before I was passing them and I heard “clap” and then “clap clap” and then clap, clap, clap, and I saw what was happening. I slowly started to pass by as everyone clapped in unison. I was in awe. I rolled down my passenger window and threw out Mon-Thurs $ 95 my arm with a thumbs up and shouted loudly, Juanita, Juanita, Juanita. And 80 thumbs went up and 40 voices hollered back to me Juanita 11AM-8PM Juanita, Juanita. Hope was sending me a message. I was alone. With a tear of love for these people who appreciated being respected, and longed for hope to become real, I thought of men I served with so long ago, men that mean just what they say, who I will always miss, and I began to gently whistle the Battle Hymn of the Republic as I drove away. I offer to you today, that this was real life and that whenever anyone violates the Democratic Principles that protect the hope of these wonderful Private Rooms Available for up to 100 People people and Juanita Perez Williams hears about it, there will be a presence and their hope will be protected. or comment from their safety of their armchairs —which, sorry folks, is useless— he’s doing something. Pinning him down to chat is impossible, but, I did it. Chuck Schiele: Hey Michael, thanks for taking a minute for Table Hopping. You’ve created a unique purpose for yourself in Syracuse. How would you classify your presence and purpose in the Central New York/Syracuse music scene. Michael John Heagerty: Thank you for the opportunity to be interviewed. Although I’m not a full time promoter, my purpose is clear in the CNY music scene – create unique opportunities and programming for local talent to emerge and be showcased. To assist them in becoming better at the creative promotion/business side while they polish their skills and connect them with like-minded individuals.
When people think of music scenes, naturally they think of musicians, singers, bands bustling to share their music. And that is the right focus. However, there is more to the scene than meets the eye. Lurking in the shadows, behind the curtains, or even in plain sight among the crowd are catalysts that make a scene go. While they, themselves are not necessarily musicians they are often time exactly the grease that musicians and music scenes need. They perpetuate they scene. They help you experience new things in new, fresh ways. We call these people promoters, movers and shakers … I call them instigators. These instigators help you —yeah, that’s right you the reader— citizens of your community do something else. Something exciting from the usual expectation you manufacture from your (yawn … ) comfort zone. Michael John Heagerty is one such fellow. He’s out there. Right now. Making it go. No whining, no excuses and probably receiving more skepticism than cooperation. And in the face of that, he figured out how to make his city a little more exciting by creating ways to make the arts and community thrive together. I haven’t really worked with him, yet, but I will simply because I know we both share the notion … “Ask not what your community can do for you, ask what you can do for your community.” While many bitch Michael John Heagerty is out there. Right now. Making it go.
It was all about offering opportunities to local musicians to play in a unique setting and really get people around Syracuse to understand the primary goal is and always will be supporting the musicians and artists of this area to make the Music Scene whole and therefore increase the primary music economy, making sure that if they play- they get paid, properly. CS: Tell us about some of the music-oriented events you create. MJH: Weekly series —consistency and accessibility are the big three things I think about when creating events locally. Tales from the Vine
by CASSANDRA HARRINGTON
Harvest Has Begun Its harvest time here in the Finger Lakes. It began a bit later than last year, but we pick when the grapes are ready. All sorts of variables determine the ripeness of the fruit, like weather and terroir. Some wineries began picking last week. Knapp began with Baco and on the agenda this week were Cayuga, Seyval, Vignoles and Chardonnay. My office is at Knapp and conveniently located upstairs from the bottling room which overlooks the crush pad. That means that, for the next couple weeks of harvest, when people call my office, I have to ask them to speak up in order to hear over the sound of the forklift, tractors, and crusher/destemmer just outside my window. Rough life, I know. That being said, the activity level outside, matches that inside our office. Typically, at this time of year, we’re working closely with our graphic design team to make updates to the Trail Map & Guide. We’re putting transportation and accommodation packages

Defining Our Terms continued from pg 4 date who truly won the most votes, never were all that privileged in the overarching socioeconomic reality of history. Trickle-down prosperity never trickled down to everyone. While we like to believe everyone can access a good education and good prospects, value judgements about what’s good guide what we think about those possibilities. Most learning starts in the home and today’s laissezfaire facilitated off-shoring of US jobs has left many households, non-white and white, struggling economically and educationally. In recent years, demographic studies show rising patterns of poverty and overuse of mind-altering substances in “white” and politically right-wing locales while the ages old tradition of assigning blame to scapegoats continues unrecognized and unabated. In family, ethnic and religious systems where might enforces some perceived right, the weakest or most nonconforming members are the first to be targeted when things get uncomfortable for someone more powerful.
Human consciousness manifests as self-talk, sometimes positive, sometimes not.
Adverse childhood experience studies link childhood trauma with health problems that extend into adulthood. Adults define and interpret the first words children learn. It is my belief that poorer girls suffer the most damage in such systems. This past summer, in Oswego County, four people, two men and two women one of whom is the mother, were accused of abusing a ten-year-old girl by withholding food, dousing what food was allowed with hot sauce, and, among other things, forcing the girl to run, tied up, behind a car. CNY Central. com quotes the attorney COUNTRY CLUB defending one of the accused as follows: “They disciplined a child. Disciplining a child out here in this part of the county is a little different than disciplining a child in Fayetteville or Skaneateles. In those places you may discipline a child by removing their iPad or taking away their computer privileges. They chose to discipline the child —she had made some state• Office Parties ments, she was acting out— and they took her for • Christmas Parties a walk to settle her down.” • Sit Down Dinner Two of four news items I read about this case sug• Buffet-Catered to Your Needs gest one of the accused Seating up to 75 people had a tenth-grade education and a third-grade reading level. or of what the ten-year-old victim’s reading level was … I mean is … or perhaps … was then, is now and might eventually be. Environment affects learning and since this girl’s mother, reportedly the only employed member of this household, a household where food was locked up, stands accused of endangering her daughter’s welfare, this girl’s primary familial relationship along with the girl’s sense of bodily integrity and dignity have already been damaged. Adverse childhood experience studies link childhood trauma with health problems that extend into adulthood. Adults define and interpret the first words children learn. Human consciousness manifests as self-talk, sometimes positive, sometimes not. Linguistically, it’s likely intentional that the attorney whose duty it is to defend his client, used the term “discipline” five times to describe his adult male client’s actions toward a ten-year-old girl. The word discipline conjures images of stalwart moral exemplars. Here and everywhere, specificity and detail matter.

It’s Never Too Late To Start WITH CENTRAL NEW YORK
THANKS FOR VOTING US BEST PLACE FOR ZUMBA!
A full day of work, school, errands and child care can wipe just about anyone out. By the end of the day, finding the time to sit down let alone exercise can seem almost impossible. Some people love to exercise; for others, it is the bane of their existence. I don’t have time, I’m too tired, I’ve tried before, I don’t know where to start, and I’m too old! Do any of these excuses sound familiar? Whether it’s too little time, not enough energy, or because you are a self-proclaimed couch potato, it’s never too late to start!
If you exercise regularly you won’t just be more likely to feel better, you will be more effective and productive at ‘living life.’ Now that’s encouraging!

I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking that exercise, like broccoli, fiber and flossing, is good for you, but there are things about it that you just don’t like. There are those annoying people at the gym, confusion about where to begin, getting sweaty and stinky, and that dreaded box of metal that you hate, I repeat hate stepping on.

Whether it’s too little time, not enough energy, or because you are a selfproclaimed couch potato, it’s never too late to start!
Being more physically active doesn’t just make your butt look better. It can also save it in the office, at home and at the doctor’s office. According to a new study, regular exercise can give people of all ages a major health boost, even if they were previously inactive. Even seniors who never exercised before saw major health benefits by becoming more active later in life. A sedentary lifestyle is a prominent risk factor for many health related disorders. In fact, inactivity is as much of a health risk as smoking, excess drinking, and obesity and is continued on pg 41

ent. As an artist, I appreciated the effort, but I can’t wait to see this in the dark with 3D glasses! Grazie’s team actually built the ship! However, each house has its own flare, and each is filled with a ton of details that only heighten the experience. Some areas feature animatronics that rival a movie set. “It’s a constant reinvestment. We want to get better each year.” Grazie’s commitment to the event is evident at every turn along with another surprise. And if the costumes and expensive props aren’t enough, you can always take your picture next to the Ghostbuster’s car! After the tour, I realized that this must be the biggest haunted house
My personal favorite was the 3D Pirate Ship. Even in the daylight, the artistry is present. As an artist, I appreciated the effort, but I can’t wait to see this in the dark with 3D glasses!

I’ve seen people decorate their porches or the areas around buildings and houses, but I have never seen such an elaborate or extensive in this area ever! When I asked Grazie which house was his favorite, he replied, “I don’t have a favorite. There’s something great in each of them.” However, he did tell me one of his favorite stories!!! Several years ago, he had a high school drama student who acted so well, the patrons were afraid she was really being held captive. “Anytime she wants to come back, she’s welcome. She was an amazing actress!” Returning characters are what makes this event so wonderful —staff comes back because they never know what they will be next, and Grazie is always open to suggestions. Tony said, “that’s what they all love about this place, it changes constantly even from week one to week five.” Grazie believes that simple things are still the best, and part of what makes it so special is both the staff and the customers. “Even if you just sit and observe, you will have a good time.” Of course, they’re planning something special for Friday the 13th so don’t miss the fun. Our bodies were meant to move! If you don’t exercise, your muscles will become flabby and weak. Here are just a few good reasons why you should get started today. 1. You should work out because it makes you happy! You bet it will. You’ll feel so much better after you exercise. Study after study confirms the direct relationship between exercise and increased ‘feel-good’ hormones. An hour of exercise creates a feeling of euphoria that lasts well beyond your time spent at the gym. In fact, a recent study has confirmed that serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine levels in the hippocampus were significantly increased by exercise, suggesting physical activity can help manage depression.

Being stronger, leaner, happier and more capable can definitely make life more manageable. For example: When you have to carry groceries, move furniture, mow the lawn or go up and down the stairs with a load of laundry it will be a piece of cake! If you are weak, out of shape and unhappy these everyday tasks can be a real struggle. 3. Working out helps you win at life. Setting and achieving goals inside the weight room helps you set and achieve goals outside of it as well. Initially, these victories are small, but eventually, the accomplishment of your goals will help improve and define your life. 4. You should work out because you care. Your family, friends, and loved ones deserve you at your best. If you’re not healthy, you are no good to anyone and abusing or mismanaging your body is a disservice to them just as much as it is to you. 5. You should work out because you can. They can’t drive to the gym to workout with friends and they aren’t able to get on a bicycle and ride to the park. 6. Okay, you can work out to turn a few heads. There’s nothing wrong with that either! If you’re still not convinced, here is a list of reasons why exercise is so important: • Less stress in your life • A better handle on weight control (because it increases your metabolism and burns calories)
Finding the courage to start a fitness program may be a challenge, but it’s one of the most important commitments you will make. Exercise and physical activity can not only add years to your life, but it can increase the number of years you are healthy. Regular exercise is one of the cornerstones of a healthy, vital, body and mind. You will not only feel better, but you will look better too. Even more important, you will have more time to spend with family, friends and the ones you love. Remember, if you have a big enough reason why you want to achieve something you will do whatever it takes, but if your reason isn’t big enough your excuses will be. I have been a personal trainer for over seventeen years and I absolutely love what I do. I honestly feel that I have one of the best jobs out there! The most rewarding part of my profession is helping one of my clients succeed at reaching their personal fitness goals. Making a difference in someone’s life makes it all worthwhile.
