Chatting with Dave Porter “Funny where you find yourself in life,” I always say. Never count out any possibility. I saw the 805 MTV video back in the day while I was living in California. Since I always had a foot still here in Syracuse, I wondered if it was the same guys. Scroll up a couple of decades, and I’m jamming in a rib joint in Liverpool making friends with great musicians and great music lovers from the scene. I learn that my new pal Dave Porter is the singer for the 805 group you’ve all been so very fond of. Up till this point I thought he ran great sound and was a stellar singer at this open jam, every week. Mellow. Friendly. Modest. You wouldn’t know he was a front man for a group like 805. By now, I’ve worked with him on a number of shows around the city, but mostly down at the Limp Lizard. It is in this location I learn a lot about the people from this scene as we sip and sing our way through the camaraderie we manufacture in the music. And that means we tell stories and share a lot of laughs. We were recently enjoying a nice bloody red wine at a show and started chatting. Chuck Schiele: Thanks for doing this interview for Table Hopping Dave. How are you? Dave Porter: I’m doing great, Chuck. Thank you for thinking of me for the article. CS: What are some the things that move you to do your thing—things that inspire you. DP: Creativity, new ideas, new twists on old ideas that send them off in a different direction. Musically, there is a void in truly innovative new music in the rock category. I am so tired of songs that play the same 4 chords over and over and over again … with the same melody on top of them. themes that all relate to each other, that’s inspiring. CS: You have quite a history here in the area. Share a bit with us. DP: I played in a band in high school called, ‘The Exiles’, several college and post-college bands in the Cortland NY area, ‘Magic Dog,’ ‘Harpy,’ ‘Dove’. ‘805’ in the late 70’s and 80’s. That band had a good deal of success. We had a deal with RCA that produced nationally distributed album. We toured the eastern US and Canada. CS: What are some of the more memorable highlights of your career? DP: Opened for a lot of famous bands. 805’s RCA album and single reached #36 nationwide on the Billboard Charts, radio airplay across the country. Had a video on MTV (back when they actually played music videos). Most memorable are the great musicians and co-writers that made up the members of 805 from ’77 – ’89. CS: My favorite question. The “dirt.” Please share a funny war story from your crazier days living this music life. DP: 805 carried a 10’ live Burmese Python that was used in the show. We had to sneak it across the border when we played in Canada, and obviously would not alert whatever hotel we stayed in as to it’s existence. ‘Dudley’ was often allowed to run loose in the hotel room. Once in Quebec, we were rehearsing at the club and Dudley pooped on the hotel room floor, and a 10’ python poop looks quite similar to a human one. Housekeeping never saw the snake, he had snuggled himself to sleep in front of the heat vent under the table, but they saw the floor. We came back from rehearsal and 3 maids and a manager were all screaming at us in French … they thought one of us had s**t on the floor. We PC: Ingrid’s Studio Stream explained as best we could “La merde de serpent sur le sol” … and soon having a 10’ snake in a hotel room became more of the issue. As the end credits began to roll at the end of Guillermo del Toro’s latest film THE SHAPE OF WATER, I was filled with a sense of wonder. Though I have seen thousands of on screen romances over the years, I had never seen anything quite like this. In the gifted hands of the visionary director (and screenwriter/producer), the story of a mute woman falling in love with an amphibious humanoid is tender, sweet, and impossibly believable. Elisa (Sally Hawkins) has been unable to speak since childhood. She bears scars on her neck with no recollection how they got there, and relies on sign language to communicate. She lives an isolated existence above a movie theater, spending her time in her apartment, occasionally sharing company with her neighbor Giles (Academy Award nominee Richard Jenkins) and going to work

each day at a secretive government facility. It is 1962, and the threat of a soviet invasion is imminent. Elisa along with her friend and co-worker Zelda (Academy Award nominee Octavia Spencer) go virtually unnoticed throughout the day, cleaning up the facility where mysterious studies and experiments are taking place. Special Agent Richard Strickland (the consistently and delightfully unsettling Michael Shannon) arrives at the facility with a creature that he had discovered in South America. The being was worshipped as a god, Elisa (Sally Hawkins), intrigued by the creature after and it is Strickland’s hope his arrival at the lab. to learn everything about it, by any means necessary, in hopes of utilizing it as a weapon against the Soviets. After extracting all of the information that he can while it is alive, he plans on dissecting it, and exposing all of the hidden secrets he possesses. After catching a brief glimpse of the creature upon his arrival, Elisa is instantly intrigued. Putting her health and employment at risk, she takes advantage of the empty lab and attempts to make contact. She offers an egg to the creature, and the two share a brief exchange. unlikely bond. When Elisa discovers that Strickland intends to kill and cut open her newfound companion, she forges a dangerous plan in hopes of being his savior. In the hands of lesser talents, THE SHAPE OF WATER could have been a disaster. It is difficult to convince a mainstream audience that the union of a human and a seamonster is not only acceptable, but somehow endearing and believable. The film was obviously a labor of love for del Toro, who was instrumental in virtually every aspect of the creative process. He earned a Best Direct Golden Globe, and looks to be one of the favorites to win the Academy Award. Many fans know that this type of recognition is long overdue, and it’s rewarding to see In Guillermo del Toro’s latest Film, the a unique and daring mind such as story of a mute woman falling in love with an his being showered with accolades amphibious humanoid is tender, sweet, and for such an unconventional tale. The Percy Jackson & The Olympians Books by Rick Riordan First published: 2005 Kid book alert! And I have it right from an 11-year-old: these books are “better than Harry Potter.” That said with a knowing nod. I was then treated to all-but-the-last book of the first series to borrow and read – which I am, and unabashedly admit that I am enjoying them immensely. Once engaged in a verbal review, two young kids (11 and 8) proceeded to tell me all about the Olympians, the Gods of the Roman pantheon, then on to the Norse tales of Thor and Odin and Frigg – and explained to me how the Titans came to be, what a “hero” was, and which gifts each of the characters had. What was the best part? Their enthusiasm, interest, and dare I say it, sophistication in Then they regaled me the many myths associated with the beginning of the world understanding the concept of “myth,” and how myth gives us insight into us as human from Greek to Hindu to Native American. beings. Fair warning, parents: like the Harry Potter series, these books are not for all children and should be browsed by an adult for suitability. Where Harry Potter deals with wizardry, magic, and “ages” as the children do with each book, this series deals with Gods, powers, good versus bad, and is part of the Disney empire. So if you object to any of these, proceed with caution. Yes, the books borrow heavily from the ethos of Harry Potter (clearly, J.K. Rowling, like Dickens, had a gift for story telling that has been emulated again and again). A young boy is “different,” and he doesn’t know why. Seemingly out of nowhere, and removing him from an unhappy situation, he is introduced to a world he is part of, but knew nothing about. And something about him is super special. true —and better— self. I won’t give it away, but suffice to say Percy’s watery talents tell which of the Greek Olympians he is related to. Percy is taken to a special camp—Camp Half-Blood— where, as with Hogwarts’ Sorting Hat, each child is “determined” as to which Olympian he is related. And, as in Harry Potter, we learn that a battle royale is brewing in which our main character has an important role to play. Each book, of course, has its own centerpiece plot, and we meet a cadre of friends who are the “good guys,” engaged in the small battles of adolescence, and the larger battles of kids’ fiction. While the books are fun, and written at the right level and pace for a young reader, what delights me most with any children or YA (young adult) fiction is its ability to open a new world to the child in the guise of simply story-telling. And here, from what I gathered listening to the young reviewers who described the books to me, the Percy Jackson books excel. Where the Harry Potter books offer clues a child may or may not pick up on (like, why is the werewolf character named Remus Lupin?), these books use an actual mythology to supply the magic. Where Harry’s world of witchcraft and wizardry is endlessly clever but imagined, Percy’s world is based upon the mythical world of Ancient Greece – thus introducing the child to an important framework of cultural history without the pain of Edith Hamilton (though, yes, I admit it – I actually enjoyed her books about mythology) and her more didactic approach. Beyond that, I always appreciate a children’s book in which Good is good and Bad is bad, there are levels of each, and the possibility of Doing Better is always available. Labores torquatos.

Sure, it’s extremely cold, but the way the snow blankets the tree branches after a fresh coating is mesmerizing to the eyes. Not to mention the feeling snow gives you. We’ve recently had a couple snow storms in the Finger Lakes, and even as an adult, the feeling I got when I looked out the window and saw all the snow transported me back to being in school. My first thought: snow day! It doesn’t always happen like that as an adult, but this particular storm happened on a weekend and I wasn’t planning on going anywhere! When the snow falls, there’s a common misconception that Wine Country comes to a booming halt! Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but many people, even locals, think that all things wine are either non-existent or severely slowed down. That may be true in certain areas, but surprisingly, there’s still a ton of things going on in every wine-related aspect. Let’s start in the vineyard. Like many, I’m also guilty of thinking that vineyard work just stopped right after harvest. After all, what could possibly need to be done in 18 degree weather? Well for starters, some wineries harvest ice wine around that temperature, but it doesn’t stop there. Until the ground is frozen, the vineyard crew is working on fixing any broken trellis pieces that may have been damaged by equipment throughout the growing and harvest season. They’re also fertilizing the vines. This harvest season yield was above average, so the vines could use the extra food to recuperate. Once Mother Nature freezes the ground, or if the crew completed all that work, it’s
The pruning and trimming of the vines happens after Mother Nature freezes the ground unless there is ice on the vines which could damage the fruiting buds on to pruning/trimming. It’s been a frigid winter thus far, so the vineyards crews have to dress to withstand the cold, wind and snow. The only exceptions are if it’s close to minus 10 degrees (it’s simply too cold to be outside) or if there’s ice on the vines. Pruning when they’re covered in ice could cause damage to the ice-covered fruiting buds. The bottling lines are typically in full swing this time of year. Many wineries need to bottle to make room for wines inside the winery that have been stored outside in tanks undergoing cold stabilization, which is a process of chilling the wines causing the tartaric acid in the wine to crystallize and “drop out” of the wine naturally (no additives used to reduce the wines acidity). The wine makers are also busy doing blending trials on 2017 releases, making sure they get it just right. The biggest misconception is that the wineries aren’t open in the winter. We decided to begin with an order of the Clam Bar Wings (an awesome mix of secret seasoning that we are told is brought over from Germany) these wings are exclusively served at The Clam Bar and are indescribably good. No trip to the Clam Bar is complete without an order of these fantastic wings! After we devoured the wings, I was served a fresh and delicious salad and Kyle had a cup of what he called “the BEST clam chowder he had ever had.” I had a bite of that as well, and of course, I agreed. Nothing beats the Clam Bar’s Clam Chowder. For our entrees, Kyle ordered the Blue Crab Stuffed Sole topped with Béarnaise sauce. This dish was a unique mix of flavors and textures that were perfectly complimented by the heaping side of onion rings. Kyle enjoyed every single bite! For my entrée I ordered the Broiled Platter Haddock, Shrimp, Sea Scallops and Clams with a side of the Clam Bar’s very own coleslaw. You can never go wrong with a gigantic portion of seafood especially with steamed littlenecks and tender scallops. The dish was also presented beautifully on the plate, almost too good to eat, except we managed to get past that! We were full but we had heard rave reviews about Christa’s homemade chocolate cake and knew we just had to try some. This homemade chocolate cake was moist and light, chocolaty with a flawless layer of whipped cream on top and the perfect way to end a fantastic meal! The Clam Bar has been a favorite place for Central New Yorkers for drinks, lunch, and dinner for nearly 22 years! Bright If you were to see the trailer of Will Smith’s latest action flick BRIGHT without having any context to go by, you would likely believe that the movie was an upcoming summer blockbuster. A high concept production that features Smith as a police officer in an alternate reality where humans, orcs, elves, and fairies co-exist together, it is the type of production that, in theory, should open in thousands of theaters across the country. The surprising thing about it, though, is that it is not a theatrical release. On December 22, 2017 BRIGHT was instantly accessible to millions of potential viewers when it debuted on Netflix. The continuously evolving entertainment platform had already achieved a high level of success with dramatic films (including this year’s multiple Academy Award nominated MUDBOUND) but this was their first legitimate attempt at a brainless blockbuster. Smith plays Daryl Ward, a veteran officer who is only a couple of years away from retiring. He is recovering after being shot in the line of duty, and is less than ecstatic to get back to his job due to his partner’s inability to keep him safe. To make matters worse, his partner, Nick Jakoby (Joel Edgerton) is an orc who is deplored by the entire department. The human officers think that orcs continued on pg 21

wineries do shorten their hours for the season, but only one tasting room on our trail closes down entirely for a few months, so there’s still plenty of places to visit! Personally, I think the winter time is the best time to go around for a tasting. With it being a slower time, the wineries don’t need to staff as heavily. There’s a big chance that you’ll be served a tasting by the owner or wine maker him or herself! Imagine sampling and learning about a wine from the person who made it? Priceless. Winerys still host events in the colder months. One winery has an event based around Chili, which is sure to warm you up! Others take advantage of the colder months and host annual wine sales to help make room for the new vintages being bottled. Valentine’s and St. Patrick’s Day are both causes to celebrate. The Wine Trail also hosts Mardi Gras at each of the 14 wineries at the end of February and Bacon on the Lakein at the end of March. A little cold weather won’t stop us from having fun and enjoying wine! The biggest winter question is: “Have these consistently cold temperatures affected the vines at all?” But first, a brief lesson on the winter hardiness of the vines. Vinifera varieties such as Chardonnay and Riesling can withstand temperatures as low as minus 5 degrees. Our native varieties like Niagara and Concord can withstand in the minus 10 to 15 range. That being said, we haven’t actually reached a point where there’s been a concern for any bud damage. The snow also acts as an insulator for the trunks, which helps protect from cold temperatures. He was a successful business man and TV personality prior to running for President. He is a family man with talented successful children and he is a force. He is severely deprived of quality in his character and personality which are not requisite to these kinds of achievements. Such impairment however is a precursor to unfair decision making. Either he does not recognize these shortcomings which bring into question his contact with reality, or he does not care which brings into question his sense of empathy. In either event he should not be President of the United States. It is his base that is shocking to most of us. In clear view of his dispassionate and low life antics they do not waiver. The rest of us find this stunning and question what has happened to American greatness. The definitive answer is “our system of campaign finance and quid pro quo.” This is the practice that siphoned off not only American, but human concern from governing. Good and bad have always been present. But when the good fail to participate, evil will weave a path. And they did. Trumps base does consist of all that has to be fought against for America to prevail. But there is more to it. In this case

Trump’s 34% are not all bad. The systemic failures of Congress and the Supreme Court have reduced many Trump supporters to choosing a despotic heart in the hope that our leaders will learn that they have failed the American way. The rest of his support possess cruelty and dispassion. Especially toward Blacks and Hispanics. This is the group that presents the danger to all of us. Many feel we had better deal with Trump lest we have to deal with them. They don’t know they are bad people. They think they are right. They think it is ok to think lesser of others for ethnic or racial reasons. They do not understand that equality is part of being an American. Being the cause of suffering is fine with them so long as it is a group they deride. They are a large part of the 34% base that Trump enjoys. Prior to Trump they were embarrassed or afraid to show their true colors. Trump’s own depravities condoned and gave them credibility. Trump’s narcissistic support perpetuates their hopes. His mind requires appeasement. He draws the worst of us. One cabinet member buys him off with starburst candy and national decisions are thus altered. Trump siphons the quality out of America. He siphons America out of America. Included in the Trump 34% are the disenfranchised. This is a group that has suffered not from Trump but the rest of the Federal Government. For two generations, for money, the 535 in the House and Senate, (Plus the Supreme Court) have excluded most from

And yes, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, the “Candy Man” was present at the Sh**hole meeting and lied. He too sides with the devil rather than America along with Sh**hole attendees Senators Purdue of Georgia who lied, and Cotton of Arkansas who lied, and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielson who lied. (U.S. Senators and The Secretary of DHS lying against American Interests – what has happened to us?) These are suck ups made of pure evil. When you desert your country for an aggrandizing, obsequious sucking up lie you are the worst of us. I still cannot eat for a while after thinking about the North Korean-Like Trump Cabinet where each kissed the fecal ring.

There is part of the Trump base that I understand. America evolved into a giant leap of decline. One day we woke up and the good pay and jobs were gone. Our Government had sold its soul. No one looked out for the people. We lock up far more than anyone on earth. No one sought answers as un-American greedy corporations sent our lifeblood to other lands on a scale that was staggering to every community. -Not one leader. This portion of Trump’s supporters hope he is such a horrible leader that the Government will take note and realize this disgusting man was chosen over the status quo. And maybe change things. Others don’t think with this depth and are willing to sacrifice American Quality thinking that this selfish needy man will help their cause. The problem that stands alone does not seem to be appropriately recognized. That is because the beneficiaries of this problem are in power. The extreme wealth of individuals and corporations are in power. They buy decisions. -Easily
The extreme wealth of individuals and corporations are in power. They buy decisions. -Easily I might add. I might add. They manipulate the key influences of all you see and hear. Money is their earthly divinity. Regulation is written by donors with obscure detail and then passed into law unread. Wealth literally runs a bafflingly, obsequious and un-patriotic Government. 546 people, in the three branches, none of whom will go near this problem, all of whom know better, and thus have sold their souls harming America no less than foreign agents. The result is that they preside over a purchased government. The damage is immense. This resulted in two generations of American work going to other countries. Trillions were spent by Corporations to escape the decades of quality building for our people by uprooting massive companies and moving to where they could exploit. Millions of American lives were ruined and the American dream faded and dropped even from our lexicon. Other lands did not matter. Neither did ours. There was hardly a peep. As only self-preservation mattered in government and only money mattered to the rich, we watched for 40 years as we destroyed our families and the wonder and the hope and the dream of far too much of America. One of the most popular New Year Resolutions people make every year is to eat healthier. They figure if they can’t make it to the gym they can at least make healthier food choices. Although most of us have good intentions, we figure out pretty quickly that eating healthy is hard! 1. Start a Food Planning Meal Menu. When you’re crunched for time and your food choices are limited, ordering a pizza is an easy solution. So planning everything out is the best thing to do! Every Sunday, sit down and create a calendar of meals for the week. This will let you see exactly what you do and don’t have in your kitchen and it will also help you get a good handle on the planning beforehand. Need to get to the grocery store? Make a list of the healthy food you will need for the week, including the meals you will prepare and get to the store. 2. Trash the crappy food in your cabinets. You’d be surprised what squirrels will eat? After the holidays we all have food that we wouldn’t normally have sitting around our kitchen. Get rid of them so you won’t be tempted to eat something bad. 3. Do all your prep work beforehand. One good way to do this is with Mason Jar Salads. They are a delicious, easy, low-calorie and low-fat way to plan lunches for the week. Plus, you can bring them just about anywhere. Load them up with your favorite veggies and add chicken, turkey or an egg for some extra protein. Voila, you have the perfect lunch! Anything that cuts down on the prep time when it comes time to sit down and eat is a win-win for everyone.

If this seems overwhelming, start out by skipping a few lunch dates a week and work your way up from there. 6. Replace unhealthy foods in your house with healthier alternatives. For example, replace your white rice with brown rice. Replace your white flour pasta with gluten-free pasta. Replace sugary treats with natural options such as raisins, dried chopped dates, and fresh fruits. Replace salty chips with unsalted nuts. Replace flavored or fruit yogurts with plain yogurt that you can be sweetened naturally with organic honey, maple syrup or stevia. Small changes like this can go a long way! 7. Buy a food scale and measure your portions. In the beginning it can drive you nuts, but in the long term you will have a better idea as to what a portion size looks like without having to use the food scale. Flu For You? Its February and that’s VaIentine’s day and I should be writing about your love life but I have done that plenty of times in the past and it’s time for another issue altogether. It’s a little late in the season but knowledge comes to me when it comes and when it comes to me it comes to you … after I have done my due diligence. I’m hoping to do an article that’s not controversial someday but every time I read a new book or review a medical issue I feel compelled to write about it . This time I take on the flu shot. Everyone should get a flu shot is what we are told. Children from six months and older should get the shot. Pregnant women should get the shot. Grampa especially needs the shot. The flu shot is safe and effective. Well, that’s the party line but I am crashing the party. Yes I know many of you think I am off my meds. Just some crazy fringe doctor who has lost his way. I have said we take way too many pills including statins. I have written that milk is really not good for you at all. I have recommended a crazy diet that eliminates sugar and wheat and dairy to lower your inflammation. Now I tell you that the flu shot should be avoided. That’s right ...the flu shot is neither effective nor safe and the data comes right from the Supreme Court, the Centers for Disease Control and major publications including the prestigious Cochrane Review.

Adverse reaction to the flu shot is one of the leading causes for payout from the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program. That’s not the musings of this crackpot physician who is oppositional, these are straight facts from the major literature that you can easily snoop or fact check on the Internet. Let’s start with the safety issue first. The Supreme Court has ruled in 2011 that vaccines are “unavoidably unsafe.” Ask your doctor as he draws up the solution from the vial … is this safe? If it is why does the Supreme Court say its unavoidably unsafe. That should start an interesting conversation and you will probably be labeled a kook just for asking that question. Depending on the manufacturer and the specific vaccine the vaccine can contain mercury, formaldehyde, aluminum, polysorbate 80, cell lines from aborted fetuses, tissue from hamsters, dog kidneys, monkeys, peanut oil adjuvants and much more. I will have more to say on mercury and aluminum in other writings but everyone in power says thimerosal is safe and does not cause autism, etc. Why then does the FDA say there is no safe dose of mercury exposure? Why then have the manufacturer’s made such efforts to get the thimerosal out of the vaccines? Adverse reaction to the flu shot is one of the leading causes for payout from the Vaccine Injury compensation Program. This program was established when the Supreme Court said vaccines are unavoidably unsafe and you can’t sue the pharmaceutical companies but you can appeal to this court if you feel you have been injured. Over 3.5 billion dollars has been awarded by this court … and flu vaccine awards are among the top listed. So how are they safe. We know that one particular flu shot lead to cases of narcolepsy. Who would have predicted or expected that! Flu shots are given to pregnant women even though they are labeled continued on pg 22

do not belong in uniform, and are all nothing more than deplorable criminals. By all accounts, it doesn’t seem as if Nick is a bad guy, but he certainly doesn’t seem to be a top-notch cop, either. The underling tension between Ward and Jakoby is the result of the shooting that injured Ward, and it seems unlikely that he will ever forgive his partner for what happened. BRIGHT goes in a number of different directions, but none of these are anywhere near as engaging as they should have been. With very little explanation offered in regards to the background of the universe we are seeing, it’s difficult to become immersed in the world. The cause of the interspecies strife is never established, and this results in an inability to discern exactly where the movie is going. As a result, the entire movie is a disjointed mess. The only thing that is for certain, is that the hatred surrounding the orcs is a thinly veiled parable on racism. While an admirable attempt, it comes across as a hollow attempt to bring a timely and sensitive issue to the forefront of a clumsy action film. One of the many problem facing director David Ayer’s film is the fact that it never establishes what it wants to be. Occasionally, a genre-bending proSmith’s latest film where humans, orcs, elves and fairies co-exist, is duction that defies convention can be an inspiring revelation, like last year’s Netflix’s attempt at a Blockbuster film. BABY DRIVER. Other times, it can result in a befuddling mess. Unfortunately for viewers, BRIGHT fits into the latter category. Smith exudes his typical charm and charisma, and there are a few laughs to be found if you are patient enough to get to them. These moments, however, are hard to come by. As the film lumbers on, Ward and Jakoby find themselves at the heart of an interspecies battle that may very well determine the fate of the planet, and Smith does everything he can to save the sinking ship. With each disjointed sequence, however, it simply serves as a reminder of how great some of the A-lister’s previous endeavors have been. The plot never seems to be going anywhere, and, more often than not, it feels as if it is an aimless collection of half-developed ideas that were tossed together with no real endgame in sight. As a result, it erratically bounces from being a sci-fi adventure, to a buddy cop comedy, to a dirty cop drama, and then an action extravaganza. Sadly, none of these elements work particularly well, and renders Netflix’s first attempt at a blockbuster a lackluster failure.

The CDC itself reported that there has been an increased risk of miscarriage with certain flu shots. One uncommon but well known risk of the flu shot is Guillain Barre which is an ascending paralysis! How is that for safe! Let’s turn now to the efficacy side of safe and efficacious. The Flu shot is indicated per the CDC for all kids 6 months of age or older, all adults, pregnant women and seniors. There has never been an efficacy study in pregnant women. The Cochrane Review is an independent board tasked with independently reviewing published research on medical issues. They concluded that there was no evidence that flu vaccine protected any children between 6 months and 23 months. CDC says to do it but this independent panel, looking at published studies, says it is not effective. The CDC says the elderly are most in need of the flu vaccine due to their underlying chronic illnesses, etc. The Cochrane Review of 75 research studies over 40 years said due to the poor quality of the available evidence any conclusions regarding the effectiveness of influenza vaccine for people over 65 years of age are suspect. Furthermore influenza vaccines have a modest effect in reducing influenza symptoms and working days lost. There is no evidence that they affect complications, such as pneumonia, or transmission. Furthermore, from the Lancet volume 7 issue 10 October 2007 “ Recent excess mortality studies were unable to confirm a decline in influenza-related mortality since 1980, even as vaccination coverage increased from 15% to 65%. The remaining evidence base is currently insufficient to indicate the magnitude of the mortality benefit, if any, that elderly people derive from the vaccination programme.” We went from vaccinating very few people to vaccinating most people and there was no evidence of less deaths! Finally, again referencing the Cochrane Review … ”Vaccination of healthy adults only reduce risk of influenza by 6% and only reduce the number of missed work days by less than one day. Universal immunization of healthy adults was not supported by the results of this review.” So … maybe not so safe … maybe not so efficacious … Why the big push to immunize everyone? Well the lady doctor who took over the CDC’s vaccine Julie L. Gerberding, M.D., M.P.H. went to work for Merck (one of the largest vaccine manufacturers in the world) when she left government service. Immediately after working for the CDC. Since then she has cashed in Merck stock valued at approximately 2 million dollars and still has more stock with a cash value of almost 2 million dollars. Well, I will still give you a flu shot if you ask but I won’t offer it up as safe and effective anymore and I probably should apologize for the glib way I gave out shots in the past. What can I say except I have kept an open mind and am continuing the process of self improvement and there is obviously more progress needed. Until next month … get well … stay well. Dr Joe Barry

The Oasis at Thunder Island Entertainment Destination
Early this past summer I had a great time chatting with Ron Falise, who, with his wife Elizabeth, owns and operates the entertainment complex that comprises Thunder Island, The Oasis, and Chestnut Entertainment Services. He was full of plans for the upcoming season – and when I looked around, I could see them taking shape: fresh paint, new and updated rides, expanded picnic facilities, and more splashy summer fun were all in busy preparation. But the story was just getting started. Falise’s plans for the complex went far beyond bringing back your childhood memories of a good time on a warm summer afternoon in nearby Fulton, New York. The bigger plan was to do just what he’s done: create The Entertainment Destination in the region. Whatever the event, from elegant weddings, to corporate occasions of all kinds, to intimate gatherings to big, boisterous parties – The Oasis at Thunder Island has it covered. And if you haven’t booked an event, chances are The Oasis has dreamed up a themed party, either on their own or in conjunction with a club, organization, or media outlet, to which their friends in the area (that is, YOU) are all invited. What makes for a great entertainment destination? A flexible space that can accommodate a small group, an indoor event of up to 350, or

When he acquired the property a year ago last fall, it was in need of renovation and updating, and by the time I first spoke to him in June of 2017, work was well under way, continued on pg 36

Our Screened Dreams TV and movie awards shows provide many opportunities for artists and celebrities to promote style and ideas along with their work. Alison Janney sold me on “I, Tonya” when Janney mentioned social class while accepting the Golden Globe for her portrayal of Tonya Harding’s mother. I had been rooting for the comedy, “Lady Bird.” I loved “Lady Bird.” “Lady Bird,” portrayed by Saoirse Ronan, represented my team, in that Lady Bird was a Catholic school girl who didn’t quite fit in. Lady Bird’s fantasies and dreams included a bigger house and a cosmopolitan higher education in Manhattan. In our times, TV and movies provide most school girls and boys with their first American dreams. This year’s Golden Globes, swept along in the wake of the “#me too” movement, provided viewers with continuing commentary about how narrow media portrayals of girls and women limit girls’ and women’s shared consciousness. In her speech, Oprah Winfrey addressed race and gender, describing the possibilities that appeared to her when she watched Sidney Poitier win the Academy Award. Oprah acknowledged the many working women whose names “we’ll never know,” who suffered assault and abuse silently because they

In her speech at the Golden Globes Oprah Winfrey addressed race and gender
had “bills to pay and dreams to pursue.” On her website, Oprah Winfrey’s official biography states, “Oprah began her broadcasting career at WVOL radio in Nashville while still in high school. At the age of 19, she became the youngest person and the first African-American woman to anchor the news at Nashville’s WTVF-TV.” The Oprah.com biography is Oprah’s “resume” life story. In more personal interviews, Oprah, born in 1954, reveals a traumatic childhood during which she was raped at 9, later sexually abused again, and by age 14, had become pregnant, giving birth to a child who died. In 1990, for $19,000, one of Oprah’s relatives revealed Oprah’s story to The National Enquirer. Oprah felt devastated over this betrayal and the sale of what Oprah described as her “hidden shame.” Oprah has done much to advocate for the education and dignity of girls and women who found themselves sexualized, targeted, and psychologically dismembered amid the repercussions of early sexual trauma. Following her Golden Globes speech, nascent calls for Oprah to run for president in 2020 were followed by anti-Oprah social media attacks. One tweet claimed that Winfrey said, “that in order for the problem of racism to be solved, old white people have to die.” Snopes fact-checking site stated the claim is false and provides video clips relating to a

The application of basic mathematics generally tempers such dreams. Tonya Harding knew the math, but fought the math. The first female figure skater to perform a triple axel with a double toe loop, Tonya Harding dropped out of high school in her sophomore year to pursue her professional skating career. Tonya sewed her own costumes and strove to stand out in an arena of sports entertainment where her family background and socioeconomic class basically assured her of heartbreak, a noun generally reserved for more demure females. “I, Tonya,” is a film as much about fighting to persevere amid generalized abuse, and the daily grind of low paid work, as it is about Harding, who, of course, proverbially shot herself in the foot through her involvement in the smashing blow delivered to fellow skater and competitor Nancy Kerrigan’s knee. I hope that judgements about Tonya won’t keep moviegoers from “I, Tonya,” which is a superior piece of film work. Buying a ticket to see a wry and multidimensional characterization of an imperfect female star does not constitute approving of her actions or, in the extreme, endorsing her for public office. Women are multifaceted individuals. The female and male images we see on the screen are designed to be seen.

Too Cold Outside? Let’s Warm Things Up! It’s been a fairly cold winter so far and we’re all trying to keep our heating bills down and our body temperatures up … Somewhat unsuccessfully in my case! (I’m ALWAYS cold) Sometimes having a cold beer to drink is almost too much and just makes me colder than I already am during these winter months. The good thing is, that in the same way some spirits like whisky and bourbon warm you up, there are brews out there that produce warmth in your throat and belly as well. I also tend to enjoy more comfort foods and spicier dishes as well, and Central New York has no small shortage of excellent restaurants and take-out joints that embody both comfort and spice. Mexican and Spanish dishes tend to be craved this time of year, from warm tacos and melty cheesy quesadillas to rich vibrant Paella and spicy chorizo. Alto & Otro Cinco, The Mission, Azteca Mexican Grill, Ponchito’s Taqueria, Papa Gallo, Cantina Laredo, are just a few popular Syracuse restaurants that offer both in-house dining and take-out, in addition to the readily-accessible chains like Moe’s and Chipotle. The internet is also a treasure-trove for Mexican and Spanish-

inspired recipes to make in the comfort of your own home. And for every spicy, comforting dish, there is a beer to enhance it. Or if you’re not a fan of this particular kind of cuisine (oh, the horror!), you can skip the food altogether and still experience the comforting, warming and spicy experience of the brew itself. Many of you might be thinking, “Oh, I’ll just stick a lime in my Corona and be done with it,” but there’s so much more! And your lime —a citrus fruit— is the perfect place to start. Southern Tier Brewing Company (Lakewood, NY) makes a Session India Pale Ale, called Tangier that offers up bright and poignant tangerine and citrus notes, with light roasted malts, and a refreshing pop of Azacca hops. At 4.6% ABV this is a lighter brew that still has all the flavor of a more potent one. Such a clean and crisp brew creates a lovely juxtaposition to the spice and saltiness of a dish such as fried calamari with a chipotle remoulade, or an Ancho chile chicken entree. If you’re into this brew and wish it was little bolder, you’re in luck, because Southern Tier also brews the 2XTangier, which is a Double IPA made with Mosaic Hops and has an ABV of 8.1%. Other brews that fall into this lovely citrus category are: Tennesee Brew Works’ (Nashville, TN), Walk The Lime (5.4% ABV), a refreshing pale wheat ale with notes of citrus and more exotic fruits like peach, passion fruit and watermelon. Two Roads Brewing Company’s (Stratford, CT), Two Juicy (8.2% ABV), is a smooth New England Double IPA, with juicy grapefruit-y citrus notes and bold, but balanced, mix of Hallertauer, Blanc, Citra, and Mandarina Bavaria hops. Fish Tacos with a pickled slaw, cilantro and a drizzle of lime crema or smooth, fresh guacamole served with hot, homemade tortilla chips are two of my favorite Mexican comfort foods to savor. Recently, I attended a local brew event and had the opportunity to sample a fantastically unique brew that would complement both dishes exponentially. K2 Brothers Brewing (Rochester, NY), a small and fairly new brewery, owned and operated by (you guessed it) two brothers, showcased their Jalapeño Cream Ale (7.5% ABV) that is brewed with 1 jalapeño for

every gallon of beer. While this is delightfully spicy and bursting with the jalapeño pepper flavor, it is not overwhelmingly spicy, but instead creates a heat that sits in your throat and produces a longing for another swig. It was so good and so warming, that I went back for seconds. Another fairly unique brew is Great Lakes Brewing Company’s (Cleveland, OH), Grandes Lagos (5.4% ABV), a wide-ranging palate-pleasing lager brewed with hibiscus flowers that give it a subtle sweetness which would allow it to pair well with many of the smoky and spicy flavors ever-present in Mexican and Spanish dishes. Now onto the darker brews … of course, you could always have churros or flan or a slice of Tres Leches Cake for dessert, but for the beer lovers out there, we’ll take a hearty brew over a sticky, sweet dessert most any day of the week. Westbrook Brewing Company’s (Mt. Pleasant, SC), Mexican Cake (10.5% ABV), an American Imperial Stout, encompasses everything about what I would envision to be a dessert-in-a-glass. Brewed with cocoa nibs, vanilla beans, cinnamon and Habanero peppers, this is fantastically smooth, spicy, smoky, chocolaty, and pretty much perfection. It’s also perfect for this time of year in that it’s a great brew to drink on a cold snowy February night in the dead of winter to warm up your insides and tantalize your taste buds. (Would also make for a great Valentine’s Day gift!) A few other brews that fall into this mix are: Clown Shoes Brewery’s (Ipswich, MA), Chocolate Sombrero (9% ABV), also an American Imperial Stout, brewed with roasted dark malts, chocolate malts, Ancho chiles, cinnamon, and vanilla, which is less chocolaty and presents with a stronger roasted flavor. Stone Brewing’s (Escondido, CA), Xocoveza (8.1% ABV), an Imperial Milk Stout that is reminiscent of Mexican hot chocolate with forward cinnamon notes. It is brewed with cocoa, coffee, Pasilla peppers, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. (P.S. paired with chocolate & peanut butter, the brew is outta this world!) And last, but certainly not least, Due South Brewing Company’s (Boynton Beach, FL), Mexican Standoff (8.5% ABV), is a Porter concocted with dark chocolate, cocoa, vanilla, cinnamon and chili peppers. The dark chocolate and vanilla notes are tasty and the slow burn of the chili peppers at the end is fantastic. Us Central New Yorkers need to find some way to beat the cold, ice, and snow this time of year, and what better way than to order or create a dish of smoky sweet pork carnitas, black beans, fresh salsa and Mexican rice along with an accompanying craft brew that pulls everything together into one comforting burrito-snuggie of comfort and warmth!

What to Wear this Valentine’s Day It’s just that time of year again where you’re either dreading Valentine’s Day or looking forward to this holiday dedicated to love. Valentines Day doesn’t have to be a day you dread and neither does planning your outfit! Use these ideas to help plan your outfit for whatever you choose to do this Valentines Day! If you’re sticking with the classic dinner date this Valentine’s Day don’t worry, you have more options then you may think. Depending on where you’re going to dinner might play a huge role in your outfit but I say on Valentine’s Day it’s completely okay to dress up no matter where you go! Slip dresses have been a trend we’ve been seeing for a while now and I’m not mad about it. They are super chic and can be dressed down or up depending on how you accessorize. Slip dresses can be found everywhere from H&M, Revolve or ASOS. Seriously, these aren’t difficult to find! Since it is winter time you might want to add a jacket to your slip dress, but the good news is they can be paired with long shrug coats or if you want to give the more edgy vibe a leather jacket will do just the trick. Another good thing about a slip dress is whatever shoe you chose (heel or bootie) is bound to look good, you can’t go wrong! One last thing about a good slip dress is they tend to be a looser fit so you won’t have to worry about that awkward food

baby after dinner! If you chose a more active date this Valentines Day you want to be comfortable yet still rock the outfit. Something I’m big on currently is jeans! In my opinion a good style of jeans can make any outfit killer. Some of my favorite style of jeans currently would have to be the mom jean and they have been one of the biggest trends for jeans this past year. If you find a pair that fits right they can really do wonders for your shape. Some of my favorite places to find the mom jean style are ASOS, Boohoo and Revolve and these are all online stores. You can also never go wrong with a good pair of Levis! If you’re not feeling the whole mom jean trend another style of jean I find very flattering is a wide leg boot cut. They tend to elongate the leg and lets be honest, who doesn’t want that! I would suggest wearing them with some kind of heel or heeled boot since they do tend to be longer fitting pants. So, you have your jeans down and honestly a simple shirt with a cute jacket over it and you’re in business. Don’t be afraid to let your jeans be the center of your outfit! Plus wearing jeans on a more active date will be more comfortable. Don’t have a date this Valentine’s Day? No big One of the biggest trends this year is the “Mom” deal! Call up some of your jean girlfriends and hit the town. Now if these are

They are also nice because you don’t have to worry about it riding up or adjusting it through the night. Bodysuits can also be fairly dressy or very simple depending on what style you decided to buy. Whatever you chose to wear this Valentine’s Day I’m sure you’ll look fabulous! Just remember you’ll look best in what you’re comfortable in and hopefully some of my tips have sparked some ideas. The Entertainment Destination continued from pg 24 and the water theme park was sparkling with fresh paint and new attractions. Since then, even more has been done to update that end of the business. But at the same time, Falise had already been busy working on the other aspects of what he believes make up the idea of “entertainment.” With dozens of weddings, corporate gatherings, private functions, children’s bounce-house parties, and even funeral gatherings already held, his plan was to grow this part of the business further still. Further still is pretty much whatever your, or his, imagination can dream up. “Since I spoke with you last,” Falise told me, “we’ve done comedy shows, dinner theater, had a KROCK Sunday Funday event with a bounce-house and kid’s carnival. And we’re getting ready for a Bunco Brunch.” Wait – what’s a “Bunco Brunch (?),” I needed to know. Turns out it’s a parlor game played with dice – and in this case, accompanied by a scrumptious brunch and liquid refreshment. And while a band competition for up-and-coming local bands is another event recently hosted at The Oasis, what make the location so special is the absolute lack of limitation on the possibilities. Yes, they’ll book your corporation’s traditional (and delicious) clam bake, present an elegant theme dinner for your club or organization, let the children run free at a birthday party with indoor bouncehouse and face painting, or create the nightclub atmosphere for a comedy show, and then turn it around for dinner theater a few nights later. And then, presto: the space becomes the setting for a “Kegs and Eggs” party (coming up on March 31 and open to the public). Kegs for mom and dad, and an egg hunt for the kids. Whatever your style, The Oasis at Thunder Island is all about the entertainment. It is, after all, The Entertainment Destination.

The Adventures of Roberts & Watson I admit it - I harbor some belief in conspiracy theories. Mainly because some of them actually have merit. From the notebooks of Roberts & Watson, here are just a few. The IRS Phone Scam For example, do scammers target people they’ve identified and older and less technologically savvy? I would say: most likely. I recently got a persistent call on my cell phone from an unrecognized number. It was based in Arlington, VA (which, as you will see, turns out to be a somewhat clever spoof). I make it a rule not to pick up unidentified calls; if it’s legitimate, the caller will leave a message. In this case, the caller DID leave a message: “This is Adam Smith from the IRS fraud division. The matter at hand is extremely time sensitive and urgent as after audit we found that there was a fraud and misconduct on your tax which

I couldn’t help myself —though I will say the Arlington, VA spoofed phone number was a nice touch. However, the grammar, and the fact that the IRS will not contact you by phone but by mail were fairly concrete give-aways— I had to return the call and play along. When the phone was picked up —on the first ring, and believe me, government agencies don’t pick up on the first ring as a rule — the person on the other end had a distinctive accent. I had a friend do the talking, who said, “Hello, I’m returning a call I received about an audit.” “This is Agent Smith, you have been audited and owe in the amount of $2182. This must be paid immediately.” “Oh, no,” my friend said. “I want to take care of this right away. Can you send someone over? I want to pay in cash. Have them come over right away.” Silence. “Can you do that? Can someone come over for the cash?” Silence. “Is it too far to come from where you are?” Click. While most of this particular scam was obvious, the Arlington VA could have been alarming. But always keep in mind, a phone number can be spoofed: “Caller ID spoofing is the practice of causing the telephone network to indicate to the receiver of a call that the originator of the call is a station other than the true originating station. For example, a Caller ID display might display a phone number different from that of the telephone from which the call was placed. For example, a Caller ID display might display a phone number different from that of the telephone from which the call was placed.” The Case of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update I’m not certain that all users will have encountered the same problem, because not all networks (home or business) will be the same. However, shortly after one of my Windows 10 computers was updated, I began to see oddball “Computers” showing up on my network, which typically displays the 2 or 3 computers on the network, and a wireless printer. When I run Fing (an app that will test your home network), I will also see a couple of cell phones and my Kindle. Now I was seeing “Austin,” and off and on another name or two. Having a student apartment near my home, I began to worry that someone was riding on my network continued on pg 42

You are there on their behalf, which is us, and the INTENT of the finest land ever set in motion. From failing dying young hands you are The Torch. And frankly, you make me sick. And all of our dead, they look at you, our leaders: If they could rise they would stand at attention, they would feel your shame and do an about face … with a tear drop falling from each eye. They would think of their loss of years, their Mothers suffering and your disgrace and the plight of our land. End Campaign Finance and the greed it feeds. Take the Government back. Fix this land. Hear the screams of our people before they are our death knell. Cause the finest that humans can be in U.S. Government.

The Adventures of Roberts and Watson continued from pg 40 (sorry to pick on students!) – and since I use it for work, I had to take precautions. First I reset the password to my network. No luck. Another wrinkle: one of my computers was now not showing the other – though the reverse wasn’t true! I thought perhaps somehow one machine was sharing its drive and the other was not. Again, no luck. I rebooted the network and the computers; I found that on occasion the computer that could not “see” the rest of the network would momentarily show my missing machine, but more often just display Austin or something else (which, when accessed, only showed a MAC address). Some searching indicated that the Windows Fall Creators Update was causing havoc with many users’ networks, and the following fix was suggested: “Please run network reset tool to see if it can resolve the issue: 1. Select the Start button, then select Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network reset. 2. On the Network reset screen, select Reset now > Yes to confirm. 3. Wait for your PC to restart and see if that fixes the problem. If it cannot resolve your issue, please submit this feedback via the built-in Feed back app. And roll back to previous build as a workaround temporarily.” In my particular case, the fix didn’t seem to do the trick – so I made sure that the Fall Creators Update was installed on all the machines. This doesn’t eliminate the problem, but alleviates it. If I’m careful to shut down all the computers on the network when finishing work for the day, the network will usually spring to life properly the next day. Not a good fix, but a fix nevertheless. From what I see online, Microsoft is taking enough of a beating that the next “fix” should address this problem! The Stop Revenge Porn With a Nude Photo Caper This one stopped me in my tracks – Facebook wants you to *send a nude photo of yourself to them to prevent revenge porn?* Could this possibly be true? Apparently so.
First, what’s “revenge porn?” This is when a former boyfriend or girlfriend who has nude or otherwise compromising photos of you (young people,beware – and think twice!) uses them on social media to punish you for crimes of the heart, real or imaginary. Facebook’s “fix” was for you to send them your nude photo (the one you don’t want spread around), which it would then scan and upload it to an artificial intelligence database – presumably destroying the original. Then, by watching social media, the AI could, upon “seeing” the Embargoed Photo, “zap” it from existence whenever and wherever it appears. The program was being tested in late fall in Australia. Clever. But a better solution: don’t share nude photos to begin with. Though, in the Wild West of easily altered imagery, if someone really wants to mess with you, it’s almost impossible to stop.

2 (8 ounce) filet mignon steaks 4 teaspoons kosher salt (not table salt) 4 teaspoons fresh cracked pepper 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened (1 stick divided) 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped 1 tablespoon fresh thyme, chopped Directions 1 teaspoon lemon zest Mix together 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) softened butter with the minced garlic, Desert: Strawberry Trifle the chopped herbs and the lemon zest.
