A Chat with Jeff Gordon
I’ve been to a number Hard Promises shows and they’re always packed with a dedicated audience. And for good reason. If you like classic rock, these guys deliver tune after memorable tune in bic-flicking, high-energy fashion. They started out as a Tom Petty tribute band and continue to play special shows dedicated to the music of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. With that said, they still play plenty of shows that also include popular favorites by Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, The Cars, Boston, Journey - yep - more Tom Petty, and more. With a deep history in Syracuse music, Hard Promises is comprised of current and former members of Benny Mardones’ Hurricanes, Kane, the Custom Taylor Band, The Shop, Jake Fake and the Liars, and Joey Belladonna’s Chief Big Way. Needless to say, the boys can play. Their sense of quality and quest for detail is obvious in a very short time. Whether they play it “just like the record” or take slight liberties in their arrangements—which usually means toughening up a particular song or two —they are always engaging; delivering their music in a way that let lets their audience know that “they” come first. Jeff Gordon fronts the group on vocals, guitar and front man antics that are

well-seasoned and handled in a way that is cool without trying to be. He is not the front man that makes you feel uncomfortable. Rather, he get’s you involved before you realize you’re singing along, and toasting mutually with the band because, very simply... you’re having fun. Good classic rock bands tend to have a compelling combination of lead singer and lead guitarist. You know... Page and Plant, Jaggar and Richards, Mercury and May. Hard Promises has Gordon and Farrell. I’m a huge fan of Kevin Farell’s guitar playing. For me, in a music term: Noteplacement. With all his prowess around the neck, his choices are always classy,

clean and mean. The rest of the band is also made up of super-chops players backing the whole thing with profound proficiency and their own matter of style. And, judging by their consistently impressive audiences, this is not so much news as it is common knowledge. I just happened to be having a drink with Kevin several weeks ago, among friends, and he directed me to Jeff when I brought the notion of doing this article. And here we are: Hard Promises is a classic rock cover band. Band members include Kevin Farrell on lead guitar, John Goodwin on Keyboards, Todd Troubetaris on Bass, and Jeff Gordon on lead vocals and rhythm guitar.

CS: Howdy Jeff. Thanks for taking a little time to tell us all about Hard Promises. JG: Thanks, Chuck. CS: Tell us the nutshell version of your group; and who’s in it. JG: Hard Promises is a classic rock cover band that plays throughout Central New York. Band members include Kevin Farrell on lead guitar, John Goodwin on Keyboards, Todd Troubetaris on Bass, and Jeff Gordon on lead vocals and rhythm guitar. Pete Levante was our drummer since the band’s inception but recently moved out of state so we are now working with Eric Wilson on drums. CS: How did you get started in music? JG: All the band member started playing at a very early age and just never stopped. I started singing in elementary school and performed in the children’s chorus for several operas that came through town. In middle school I began playing bass and guitar and my mother had me take piano lessons. Bands in high school followed and I just never stopped. CS: You guys play a pretty wide set list within the classic rock heading. What influences your choices? JG: As a band, we are heavily influenced by the variety of music from the 70’s and 80’s that makes its way onto playlists on classic rock radio. We are also avid Tom Petty fans and actually do a tribute show to Tom Petty’s music. Thanksgiving EvE., novEMBER 25Th CS: Hence the band moniker, of course. What was the last concert you went to? Craft Beer in the Cuse! I’m not a big fan of any month in Syracuse that ends with “-ber” because to me that translates to the beginning of “brr” for a very long time. However, I do enjoy November not just for Thanksgiving. What I really love about a good portion of this month is all of the craft beer activity that takes place every year here! If you haven’t heard of Syracuse Beer Week or participated it in past years, mark your calendars for 2015! I’ve been going since 2010 and each year has never disappointed. use more venues to perform in. It is a tough business climate for establishments that host live music, whether it is original bands, cover bands, solo acoustic, etc.. I always believe it is our responsibility, as a band, to work hard and promote our shows to the best of our ability. If we want gigs, we have to produce a crowd and generate income for the establishment. CS: Amen to that. Please share a highlight from your music days. JG: As a band, opening for national acts is always a blast because we get to meet people that we have been listening to for so long. This past year we opened up for Bret Michaels at Taste of Syracuse and a couple of years back we opened for Loverboy and Lou Gramm. We certainly understand our role when doing this. We have to get the crowd jacked up and excited to see the headliner. Get them in the right headspace to give the headliner the best opportunity to wow the crowd. We definitely never take these opportunities for granted and are grateful that people trust us with these gigs. Personally, my two highlights musically were when I was lead singer for Joe Bonamassa’s band in the early 90’s and toured with B.B. King, Buddy Guy, and Little Feat, and when I opened for John Waite at Ballooonfest since John is my all-time favorite vocalist. CS: Funny... I was just relating to a friend how I met John Waite at a sound check in California once. He was having a bad day, and I’ll leave it at that. But now that you mention it, I can see your favorite vocalist connection. All these shows.... all these people you get to meet in the biz...You must have a funny war story... You know... the time some chick pulled up on a stolen John Deere tractor, naked, drinkin’ PBRs and accidentally mowed down the stage to bits, without ever spilling her beer...? JG: When you work in a business that has alcohol sales as its primary source of income, you see some crazy things from time to time, but, the majority of people come out just to have a great time and it’s all good. CS: Do you guys ever write your own material? JG: Several of us played in Kane just before Hard Promises and Kane released a full-length CD of original material. We all write but we don’t perform it with Hard Promises. I was a member of original bands and even performed my own original set of music in the Lost Horizon. Hard Promises serves a different musical purpose in this town. We provide a mix of 70’s and 80’s tunes that help people relive some memories and enjoy a night away from their day-to-day headaches. CS: What do you have in the way of advice for the aspiring new rockers out there? JG: Just always do it for the right reasons. When I was younger, I moved to Los Angeles and thought I would be miserable if I didn’t make it on the national level. After that didn’t happen, it took some time for me to realize that I loved playing music, whether it was for 30 people or 3,000 people and that the enjoyment of playing music, original or cover music, with band mates is something you can enjoy for a lifetime. We Don’t Go Over Your Old Tub... CS: Where can we find you online? Bridge of Spies When it comes to director/actor collaborations in Hollywood, you can’t get much stronger than Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. While Scorsese and DiCaprio may disagree with this notion, it is hard to deny the power that Hanks and Spielberg bring to a production. Regardless of the plot, setting, or budget, if these giants of industry are teaming up, the film instantly bursts forward as a “must see” event. Before their latest project, BRIDGE OF SPIES, the duo had teamed up to create instant classics CATCH ME IF YOU CAN and SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, and had also collaborated to deliver the understate THE TERMINAL. Despite these Hollywood heavyweights, BRIDGE OF SPIES somehow remained under the radar for quite some time. Though it was continued on pg 12

known that the duo were in cahoots once again, the film itself lacked buzz. For these reasons, it was easy for the production to win over their audience in the most natural way possible; by word of mouth. BRIDGE OF SPIES is based on the true story of attorney James Donovan (Hanks), who, in 1957, was tasked with the compromising and dangerous position of defending Soviet spy Rudolf Abel (the excellent Mark Rylance). While Abel’s guilt was fairly apparent, and pre-determined by the majority of American citizens and even the judge presiding over the case, Donovan insists that the Russian deserves a fair trial. Citing his belief in the constitution, the lawyer argues that the very basis of the American justice system is predicated by the notion of “innocent until proven guilty.” Unfortunately, he is alone in his beliefs. Everyone in his life, including his wife Mary (Amy Ryan) and a senior partner at his firm (Alan Alda), believe that he should simply give the impression that he is going through the motions. Due to his unwavering ideals and resolve in regards to due process, Donovan does everything in his power to ensure that his client receives a fair trial. As expected, Abel is found guilty, despite a shoddy investigation and major issues with the search warrant that was utilized to collect evidence against the spy. It was a foregone conclusion that these factors didn’t matter, and as expected, Abel was found guilty of his crimes. In a passionate plea, Donovan implores the judge to consider imprisonment over the electric chair. The counselor states that Abel is more useful to them alive than dead. It is his contention that if an American soldier were to be captured by the communists, the spy would serve as an excellent candidate for a prisoner exchange. The judge reluctantly agrees, and Abel is sentenced to 30 years in prison. Donovan’s premonition came true sooner than he had expected. After a failed attempt at an appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court, Donovan learns that an American soldier had been captured by the Russians. While executing a highly secretive operation, a spy plane flown by pilot Francis Gary Powers

(Austin Stowell) is shot down, and though he survived the crash, he became a prisoner. Though he had been instructed to kill himself before being taken by the enemy, Powers couldn’t bring himself to go through with the suicide. BRIDGE OF SPIES plays out in two enthralling parts. The first half of the film deals directly with the relationship between Donovan and Abel, while the second half follows the lawyer’s attempt to procure a prisoner exchange between the Russians and the Americans. To complicate matters, an American student named Frederic Pryor (Will Rogers) was taken into custody by the East Germans, and Donovan feels that it is his obligation to bring him home as well. Spielberg’s mastery of cinematic storytelling is on full display in this taut, engaging thriller. The world we live in now may seem vastly different than the one being displayed in the film, but in reality, there are Open House: Nov. 6th & 7th•9am-7pm a number of parallels. While the population of the nation wants to see Abel fry for his crimes, Donovan believes that it is our duty as Americans to provide a neutral, legal, and unbiased trial. Despite threats of violence to himself and his family, the lawyer refuses to compromise his beliefs. As a result of his resolve and determination, he builds a respectful relationship with his Month Long Holiday Specials & Discounts client that serves as a vital aspect in the atCorporate Gifts·Holiday Specials tempt to eventually save Fruit Bouquets·Chocolate Truffles the captive Americans.

Word on the Street by Bill McClellan
T-R-U-M-P Donald Trump is the final product of a purchased government. I am saying that his very existence as a complete Kingly rich outsider should serve as ominous warning by a people reaching away from all they know. A people reaching away from decades of costly gridlock and systemic failure for anything that provides hope in right direction. A people reaching away from a failed collective leadership that literally watched and self-served as 10’s of millions of jobs left the land and sheer greed paved the road for 400 Americans to amass half of the Countries bounty. Evolve can be such a nasty word. Often slow and cunning with shocking finality. Have we evolved full circle? Trump is a symbol of a return to a Governing, that when we wake up to what really has happened, we will see is terrifyingly analogous to a course very similar to a British system that led up to the first shot that was fired in Lexington. This isn’t a book you’ll need to - or want to - read all at once. It’s that after dinner mint of a book; just one (or maybe two) entries read per day. Then you think about them, enjoy them, mull them over. Digest them. Chesterton was a turn of the century (the last century, that is) writer, lay theologian, poet, dramatist, journalist, orator, literary and art critic, biographer, and Christian apologist. Don’t let that throw you off, though. Chesterton can be read without any specific reference to religion or theology - particularly this volume - and his observations needn’t be read in the light of Christianity. Chesterton was an odd-appearing man by age 62, though perhaps more so as seen through the lens of 100 years. Well-fed, in the manner of men of the Gilded Age, with a riot of waving hair and spectacles on a chain. Even as a young man he looked intense and deeply engaged. By all accounts - and certainly from reading this book - he was a man of prodigious intellect and spirituality. He counted among his closest friends C.S. Lewis and Hillaire Belloc. tonight! He has been accused, with some merit, of anti-Semitism, though that hardly squares with his strong Steaks, seafood, pasta, anti-eugenics stance. intellectual and thoughtful man himself (he wrote the screenplay for the film on William Wilberforce, Amazing Grace), organized the book as a daily diary of readings, each day containing a Biblical verse combined with a reading from Chesterton’s own work or works (he wrote poems, biographies, critiques, essays, plays, and novels) and then perhaps a note about an event or publication that occurred on that date. Among Chesterton’s many other accomplishments, he is credited with reviving an interest in Dickens, of whom he is supremely fond. As I read passages from his writings on Dickens, I was reminded of something I never knew I was aware (which is something Chesterton might himself say!): how achingly lovely Dickens’ view of mankind was. Bridge of Spies continued from pg 12
At this point, it is a foregone conclusion that if Tom Hanks is stepping in front of a camera, he is going to deliver a top-notch performance. In BRIDGE OF SPIES, he does not disappoint. Strong, stoic, passionate, and sympathetic, he is a hero with a fierce, patriotic resolve. As the negotiator for the prisoner release, he navigates dangerous terrain, knowing that if anything goes wrong, there will be no-one to save him. While he is working at the request of the United States, he is not officially affiliated with them in any capacity. His work, whether it is successful or not, will be not be acknowledged by the government. There is a chance that he could be detained, tortured, or executed, and if any of this were to happen, he’d be on his own. This feeling of disquieting unease and danger permeates throughout his entire mission, resulting in a quiet thriller that never relinquishes its grip on the audience. Spielberg’s film, as they so often do, captures the aesthetics and tension
of the era flawlessly. The terse courtroom proceedings, the hasty construction of the Berlin Wall, and harrowing crash suffered at the hands of Powers are all so visceral, that proclaiming that they exude realism is a gross understatement. Even in its quiet moments, the legendary director delivers a product that is endlessly engrossing. BRIDGE OF SPIES may lack the promotional fireworks of some of the more high profile productions of 2015, but is a film whose intangible qualities speak for themselves.

Preventive Medicine by Dr. Barry
The Fast Track I have studied diabetes for years...all primary care doctors have...but only recently have I been exposed to a concept that can really make a difference in the care of diabetics. One of my Signature MD patients sent me a link to Dr Jason Fung ...a doctor with a “new” approach to treating type 2 diabetes. Immediately , I saw the rightness of the idea. There have been multiple new drugs in the past several years but they just increase our medication choices...they don’t have a meaningful impact on changing the lives of diabetics. When you become a diabetic you go on one med….after a bit you go on a second med..eventually many people go on an injectable agent...all the while monitoring their sugars , blood pressure and cholesterol levels routinely. We are treating the sugar number but not the underlying problem which is that your insulin levels are too high. I am talking now about the very common type 2 diabetes not the uncommon type 1 diabetes where they don’t make enough insulin. So, most diabetics have insulin resistance and high insulin levels. High insulin levels prevent you from burning fat , High insulin levels cause weight gain. High insulin levels keep your belly fat growing. High insulin causes salt retention and therefore raises blood pressure. So, high insulin levels bad. Now the current diabetic teaching is low carb, frequent small meals etc...Not bad advice but nowhere near the best advice for treating high insulin levels. To treat diabetes and prediabetes effectively you must get the insulin

level lower. Turns out that this is possible and doesn’t require any strange new meds , treatments or therapies. Ok, how much extra time in your day do you need for this new treatment? How much money will it cost? How many choices will you have to make each day? Special equipment? Extra doctor or professional visits? The short answers are that it frees you from too many choices. It will save you time. It will save you money. No special meetings or equipment needed. Do I have your interest piqued yet? Well, I am talking about intermittent fasting. Fasting lowers your insulin level back to normal. This allows you to start mobilizing the fat in your body. Fasting reverses all the metabolic processes that insulin resistance causes. and rule in public. Sounds conspiratorial doesn’t it? Whether it is Social, Nuclear, Climate, or Economic the public has yet to see with clarity. Collective thinking is not always wise. Constitutional intent was for our government to provide the wisdom to balance this. Our Government is an astounding failure. Wealth figured this out long ago. They joined this knowledge in keeping with Government for sale and they took it all, unimpeded. Though intent was clear our Constitution was written without a description of intent. There were also no adhering principles. In any human environment without clear enforceable rules, greed and evil will always intrude and prevail. The prime purpose of rules within a Constitution is to contain and guide conduct that offends the intent of your land. And in America’s case to provide a wondrous beacon of human justice for all people. When Leaders fail. When such fine ideal is corrupted; you have the resulting extraordinary poverty, and inequality, and diversion from government for the people that is evident today. You extinguish your leading light. Only a fool or a tyrant would think or support that 400 people owning half of American was a founding intent. There is an appeal to many in a Trump Presidency. It would be the end of an enormous procrastinating and grid locked system. All of sudden things will move. Defense, infrastructure, including
did some time ago. The rich will indeed perform. They are mighty now. In Government they would be even more formidable. Open power would light their fire. They already own the 535. They will simply take their finger off of gridlock and proceed as they see fit. Opposition will not be re-elected. Government will continue to serve as their cover to appease. Remember, Constitutional intent did not get them where they are. They are the ones that bought Congress to stop opposition as they sent your work overseas. That is the problem when your system allows complete and thorough unchecked greed to thrive by buying the influence of those that should regulate them. First they turn “regulate” into a dirty freedom sucking word so they may be free to take it all. Then they take. Unimpeded and with heartless greed. Devoid of Founding Spirit. If Trump were to win the reality is that there will be enormous change. He will utilize the finest talent in America. As it was in Ole England extraordinary power and wealth will once again rule the masses. Congressional role is already vastly for appearance sake to give false credibility to some semblance of Constitutional functioning. When you let the wealthy mighty out of the closet their control will be glaring. The masses will include a fealty (fidelity to and within corporate management) middle class. Included in their function will be the basic needs of the teeming poor (serfs: those great masses enslaved with grave disparity and unfairness to the will of wealth). Oops..these things are already our reality. We will become a land of low wages where the large majority lives • Automobile Insurance and dies in a cruel pursuit • Homeowners Insurance of some kind of a decent • Life Insurance life. meanest of people; even his villains were to be pitied rather than merely scorned, though the villains who preyed upon children were, of course, mostly scorned. I became intrigued with Chesterton when I read this observation: “In the matter of reforming things, as distinct from deforming them, there is one plain and simple principle; a principle which will probably be called a paradox. There exists in such a case a certain institution or law; let us say, for the sake of simplicity, a fence or gate erected across a road. The more modern type of reformer goes gaily up to it and says, “I don’t see the use of this; let us clear it away.” To which the more intelligent type of reformer will do well to answer: “If you don’t see the use of it, I certainly won’t let you clear it away. Go away and think. Then, when you can come back and tell me that you do see the use of it, I may allow you to destroy it.” I have remembered that, and thought about it, many times, and realized that it is not just a clever thought, but a brilliant observation. But I fell in love with Chesterton when I came across this segment of his poem, The Ballad of the White Horse:
“Lady, the stars are falling pale and small, Lady, we will not live if life be all, Forgetting those good stars in heaven hung, When all the world was young; For more than gold was in a ring, and love was not a little thing, Between the trees in Ivy wood, when all the world was young.”

I loved this poem for no reason, really, other than that it was like a fairy tale, told partly for a purpose, and partly just because it delighted the imagination and was full of magic and mystery and wonderful words strung together. That’s one of the delights of Chesterton that is discovered with this 365 days sampling: that he can be both practical and poetical; insightful and whimsical. Sometimes, I pondered the quotes and ended up nowhere. Not for nothing is he called the king of paradox. And he appears to have equal admiration and disdain for the ends of the political spectrum, as well: “The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of Conservatives is to prevent mistakes from being corrected. Even when the revolutionist might himself repent of his revolution, the traditionalist is already defending it as part of his tradition. Thus we have two great types — the advanced person who rushes us into ruin, and the retrospective person who admires the ruins. He admires them especially by moonlight, not to say moonshine. Each new blunder of the progressive or prig becomes instantly a legend of immemorial antiquity for the snob. This is called the balance, or mutual check, in our Constitution.” Of course, when I began the book it was not the first of the year, but I was determined to read each passage on its own day. Still, I couldn’t help finding my birthday and reading that passage immediately. I wasn’t disappointed: “Only in our romantic country (England) do you have the romantic thing called weather - beautiful and changeable as a woman. The great English landscape painters (neglected now, like everything that is English) have this salient distinction, that the weather is not the atmosphere of their pictures: it is the subject of their pictures. They paint portraits of the weather.” It seems the genius of Chesterton was his ability to observe, and find meaning in the meanest thing. Or no meaning at all - simply the act of observing. It is really up to you, the reader, which is what makes this thoughtful collection all the more delightful. My best guess is, I will read it again and again each year, til the pages are worn out, or until I have figured out a meaning for each entry. So, other than with a recommendation that you pick up a copy immediately - no need to wait for the new year - I leave you with this observation in a political year:
“It isn’t that they can’t see the solution. It is that they can’t see the problem.”

Super Women on the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail As many of you know, the Finger Lakes hosted the 2015 Wine Bloggers Conference in August. As a benefit of the Trail’s sponsorship of the conference, I had the luxury of participating. I chatted with many of the writers and got a sense for what they thought about the region and our wines. In addition to the interactions with our visitors, the part of the conference that resonated most with me, was a session called “Women in the Wine World, Seneca”. Three panelists including Meaghan Frank, General Manager of Dr.. Frank’s Winery, spoke of their experience working in the wine industry, a traditionally male field. I was moved by their words of wisdom and their emanating confidence in themselves, regardless of their prefix. Throughout the entire session, I never got the impression that they felt inferior; rather they thought themselves brave pioneers, each with similar stories of superseding their male peers. Their tales had me wanting to highlight some of the key females along the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail. During the busy month of September, I actually managed to pin a couple of them down to chat about the industry, their roles and their aspirations for the Finger Lakes wine region. Quite literally, I started at the beginning, speaking with Ruth Lucas, owner of Lucas Vineyards and one of the five founders of the Trail in 1983. Ruth’s passion for the industry was evident from the start of our conversation. In 1975, she and her family planted 4.5 acres of Cayuga White grapes and a couple years later, sold their first crop to industry partner, Glenora Wine Cellars. In the meantime, the Farm Winery Act of 1976 was passed which allowed grape growers in New York to establish wineries and sell directly to the public. Ruth and her family realized that grape growing was a “labor of love” and with the new legislature, decided to make their own wine in 1980. The Lucas family planted 20 more acres of Vinifera vines and produced 400 cases of wine in their first year. Their first tasting room was in the kitchen of their family home, with wine bottles aligning the counter top. Daughters Ruthie and Stephanie, teenagers at the time, learned the trade and joined what Ruth refers to as a “family affair”. The girls helped in operation while Mr. Lucas was working as a tugboat pilot, thus the famous Tugboat wines. Just one year later, production increased from 400 to 2,500 cases of wine. With continued success, Lucas Vineyards is currently celebrating their 35th anniversary. I also spoke with Lindsay Stevens, wine maker at Treleaven by King Ferry Winery. Lindsay is a Cornell

The Fast Track continued from pg 18
and lunch every day and only taking in calories from 6pm - 10 pm at night. Yes, this flies in the face of all the recommendations that you should eat a big breakfast and or have 5 small meals a day. If you follow that advice you will keep spiking your insulin and weight loss will be much harder. This advice certainly has not made a dent in our diabetic problem or obesity problem. With intermittent fasting you don’t have to make a decision as to what to eat for breakfast or how to manage eating lunch on the road etc… You don’t have to spend extra time in the gym, buy special scales or tubs, or learn anything new about calories, fats, protein etc. The first few times are psychologically daunting but almost UNIVERSALLY people that do the intermittent fasting FEEL BETTER. More energy. More mental focus. Less stomach issues. As the doctor said on one of the many videos I reviewed for this issue, you can do the test of 1. That is , try it for yourself ..you be the judge. You don’t have to ask anyone else what happened to them or how they feel. You can try fasting for yourself and see for yourself and feel for yourself the benefits. “Oh I could never fast….it’s just too hard !” Really? A billion people fast for Ramadan, Hindus , Buddhists, and old fashioned Catholics all have experience with fasting. I am not going to give you the play by play because it really is just that simple... black coffee and water only until 6 pm. Eat healthy or not for 4 hours then no food after 10 pm . There are many variations on the Internet. Start with Dr. Fung on youtube and off you will go. By the way...this is not really some new fad or trend. Fasting has been around as long as we have. When people tell me that it’s impossible to do I refer them to the TV show..Naked and Afraid ..where strangers are put together in the wilderness for 21 days to survive. The vast majority of them never find anything to really eat and that has not prevented anyone from completing the challenge. They might get sick from drinking contaminated water but no one quit due to lack of calories. You don’t have to need to lose weight, you don’t have to be a diabetic, you just have to want to feel better. If you are a diabetic on lots of meds it would be prudent to check with your doctor about which meds to cut back etc. Your doctor should be sympathetic to your efforts even if he is not familiar with fasting. If he can’t be bothered perhaps it’s time to upgrade your medical care. When I mentioned fasting to one of my colleagues he opined that he thought the idea made sense but that we couldn’t get people to go along with it. I have more faith in you than that.! Did I mention that people who do fast say they feel physically and mentally better! Let me close with a few quotes about fasting so you know it’s not just me ! “Humans live on one quarter of what they eat; on the other three quarters lives their doctor.” Egyptian pyramid inscription, 3800 B.C. “Fasting is the greatest remedythe physician within.” Philippus Paracelsus, one of the three fathers of Western medicine “Instead of using medicine, better fast today.” Plutarch, a Greek biographer and moralist “The best of all medicines is resting and fasting.” Benjamin Franklin Until next month...get well stay well.

Americas plumbing, electricity, airports, road and bridges will all be addressed in a very positive manner. The ego of wealth in charge will demand this. And indeed, foreign lands will fear us as our wealthy are rightly feared. They will take out opposition. What you need to recall is that history is riddled with Dictators that did all of this. Some of the worst did it the best. These wealthy ruling classes have always taken the peoples bounty for their own. As masses withered and became the teeming poor. In a Trump Presidency only the parts of the Constitution that please this wealthy bunch will apply. We should learn to admit that our failed government allowed the peoples will to be bought, and our leaders were complicit in and watched America get stripped naked of decent work. They watched a debt become insane and did nothing as the insanity compounded endangering not just our greatness, but our infrastructure and sustainability as a viable trusted government. They ceded to wealthy desire and allowed gridlock and favor that has left our country on course with third world plight and injustice. Once you have Trump, America will become the Billionaires club. (oops, already happened). The Fittest will again have risen to the top. (oops, already done leaving mass inequality). The big difference is with these folks openly in charge we will have a clear front row seat. This instead of the obscure back seat of recent decades. We will be able to clearly watch change as wealth sees it, as the rest of our ideals are relegated to history. (oops, already underway) The answer: Gut Campaign Finance. It was the words of Bobby Kennedy that never allowed futility: “Few will have the greatness to bend History itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events. It’s already that time of year when you wouldn’t think of walking outside without putting on a few layers. That wind catches the back of your neck and spreads goose bumps down your spine. Luckily, Central New York isn’t cold enough yet to make us wrap up in our parkas and hide our faces under our hoods. Instead, the weather is the perfect excuse for pulling out our favorite accessories for staying warm and looking stylish. Hats have always been a favorite of mine since my mom When it comes to keeping your toes was convinced I’d freeze to toasty, go for some cute socks. death if I weren’t always wearing one. Now I wear beanies almost daily. I put one on, usually one that matches my outfit, I let a few strands of hair slip out of the front, and I’m good to go. A knitted headband is also a great way to keep your ears warm while still looking ultra stylish – plus they won’t mess your hair up as much as a hat. My favorite is my cream cashmere headband with a bow made of crystals on the side. The bow adds the perfect amount of personality. Make sure to express you personal style with cute embellishments like a knit-

ted flower or sparkling sequins. Scarves are the perfect way to bundle up and still look on-trend. An infinity scarf is always a good option, but this year it’s time to try something a little more luxurious. Grab a blanket scarf and gather it up so you can wrap it around your neck. Plaid is the perfect fall pattern and looks amazing as it drapes across your outfit. The huge size of the scarf gives you a really cool look while making you feel like you’re still under your blankets at home. When it comes to keeping your toes toasty, go for some cute socks. Who says you have to hide them inside your shoes? I love to wear a unique pair of sparkly or patterned socks pulled up so they peek out of my boots. They’re the perfect little detail to add to my typically neutral fall outfits. If you’re extra chilly, pull on some stockings under a dress or skirt and wear the socks overtop, that way your feet will stay warm under that extra layer. As the temperature drops, I hope you can all maintain a little personal style for as long as possible before we’re all forced to hide in our long black coats. Pick something that makes you feel warm and cozy and lets you play with fall trends before that Central New York snow starts to fall.

My Mind To Yours
by debra Merryweather
Coughing Up the “Kool-Aid” “There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance-that principle is contempt prior to investigation.” I’ve read and heard these words here and there and in the interest of accurate attribution, I searched the internet where I found a 2005 paper by Michael St. George titled, “The Survival of a Fitting Quotation.” Michael St. George writes that William Paley (1743-1805) communicated the basic thought reflected in the above verbiage. Over time, commentators addressing subjects ranging Museum • Tues-Sat 1-4 Research Center • Tues - Sat 1-5 from Easter to chiropractic repeated that verbiage as their own. Twain as saying, “golf is a good walk spoiled.” Internet sources confirm: Mark Twain did say this; Mark Twain did not say this; and no one can prove one way or the other that Mark Twain did or did not say this. Maybe Samuel Clemens said it. Prior to 2015, my own thoughts concerning golf reflected ignorance rooted in contempt prior to investigation. If indeed, as I have read in AARP Magazine, Scientific American Mind and other places, changing one’s walking route helps create new neural pathways in the brain, golf serves very well to complicate a walk. Golf requires focused brainpower. Much mind-body coordination involves itself in getting the ball from the tee to the hole. This past summer, I read three handbooks on golf. My study of these books led to many minutes spent in front of the TV torquing my torso in folded arm twists in the hopes of establishing muscle memory. I can honestly report that I now efficiently fold my arms and turn from the waist at ninety-degree angles while I watch Jeopardy. The results when I actually swing a golf club down toward a teed ball suggest I might not be as efficient on the course and that reality challenges my equanimity. Yoga helps with that. Yoga helps with golf. Yoga involves stretching muscles, tensing muscles and releasing muscles held in tension. Yoga challenges and improves balance. Golf requires balance. I began practicing yoga years ago and devoted myself to a more regular practice after suffering a concussion. A doctor told me yoga would relax my system and help the brain heal; he suggested I might start remembering things. This sounded like a good thing. Still, most old damage involves scarring. Scars constrict. Challenges on the golf course trigger feelings rooted in other situations. The body remembers what the mind might not. Many people still believe the mind is separate from the body even though it is clear that all of what is in our minds, entered through our senses. We learn from our own experience but we also learn from others, drinking plenty of the proverbial “Kool-Aid” along the way. We drink different flavors, some sweet and some bitter, and

some of it under duress. Outside pressure delivered to the brain affects the mind. Golfing involves mental control. The golfer must set the ball, visually follow the ball, select the proper club and get over it when a shot goes awry. There is always another shot. Golf is good practice for letting go and we all have things we need to let go. I am assuming, and maybe I should not assume, prior to some investigation, that I am not alone in having had my head examined. Many more of us are getting our heads examined one way or another. Diagnoses often lead to lifestyle changes. I decided to take my first Yoga involves stretching muscles, tensing muscles walk on a golf course and releasing muscles held in tension. Yoga chalwhen I began to accept lenges and improves balance. that I could no longer get my endorphin fix from jogging because I can no longer jog. Prior to this, when I started jogging, I jogged as a substitute for inline skating, an activity that I felt I should maybe try to live without. Skating and jogging require focused attention if one is to avoid injury. Walking seemed a safer way of keeping my cardio-vascular system fit and relieving stress. I felt bored. I quickly learned how to stress up a walk by ruminating about things I cannot change. There are many ways to stress up a walk. Golf is moving meditation. This meditation led to my awareness that I drank two servings of “Kool-Aid” first by believing what Mark Twain said just because he said it, and second by believing that Mark Twain said anything just because someone told me so. There are, of course, worse flavors of “Kool-Aid” to have to regurgitate. Happy November!

Brace For Impact The Holidays are here

Every year around this time, I write an article about the upcoming holidays. Well, here we go again! Another holiday season has arrived and so has endless meals, parties that fill up every weekend on our calendars and food that seems to show up in every room of our house. Shaking our heads with disappointment, we can’t help but feel like it’s almost impossible to avoid gaining a few unwanted pounds. Do you ever wonder why so many people are so worried about what they eat between Thanksgiving and the New Year? Are you just as confused as I am? Shouldn’t we all be paying more attention to what we eat between the New Year and Thanksgiving? We all know that the best way to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more. When the holiday’s roll around why does it seem like we eat more and exercise less? I understand that your co-workers home-made cookies, that glass of ice cold eggnog and that scrumptious chocolate Santa are hard to resist, but for God’s sake, get ahold of yourself! What are you doing? Are a few months of pleasurable indulgences really worth sabotaging all of your hard work? As we sit slumped over in our chairs post-holiday meal, we wonder if there is ever going to be an end to the madness. Why do we continue to do this to ourselves every year? Why can’t we just say no? Why do we always seem to have no self-control? We can’t avoid it, we can’t sleep through it, and we can’t pretend it’s not going to
The holiday season leaves us with two choices. We can brace for impact, brave the storm and hope for the best or go with the motto ‘Tis the Season’ and allow ourselves to indulge without going overboard.

• If you don’t want it, why are you eating it? How many times have you eaten something that’s put in front of you (that doesn’t even look good) because you’re trying to be polite? Bah Hum Bug! Don’t take in extra calories for stupid reasons! Politely say “No Thank You.” End of story. • Have a plan before you go to a party! Know what you CAN and what you CAN’T have and stick to your guns. If it’s one drink you said you would allow yourself to have, only have one drink. If you said you were going to pass on dessert, skip it. It’s really that easy! • Don’t skip meals. Eat your regular meals at their regularly scheduled times. You will be less likely to eat everything in sight if you keep yourself satisfied throughout the day. • Go easy on dips, chips, sauces, and desserts. These food items can be deceptively high in calories and fat. If it looks too good to be true, chances are it probably is. • Stay away from the buffet table. It’s never a good idea to be standing in front of a smorgasbord of food with a giant plate or bottomless bowl in your hands. Choice two or three healthy foods and take just one trip up to the table. • Go easy on the alcohol. Sorry guys, but alcohol can increase your appetite and lower your resolve to resist overeating. happen so the holiday season leaves us with two choices. We can brace for impact, brave the storm and hope for the best or go with the motto ‘Tis the Season’ and allow ourselves to indulge without going overboard. Since most of us already struggle with our weight and the will to exercise on a daily basis, this is something we just can’t sweep under the rug. Before you lock the door, shut off all the lights and refuse to celebrate another holiday season, here are a few ways to keep your weight and your waistline in check this holiday season:

have as many or more calories than a dessert. Try to limit yourself to one alcoholic beverage per occasion. Move! Here’s a fact for you. Thinking about going to the gym burns between zero and zero calories. Even if you only have thirty minutes a day, it’s better than doing nothing at all. Go for an early morning jog, hit the gym after work, or go for a walk after a big holiday meal. Park at the opposite end of the mall when you do your holiday shopping and use the stairs instead of the elevator every chance you have. Stay active to reduce stress. Exercise is one of the best ways to reduce the stress associated with the holidays. Stress can be a huge trigger for people with little or no self-control. Take advantage of the cooler weather. Go sledding, build a snowman, ski, or have a snowball fight with the in-laws. Say NO to the doggie bag. Taking home left overs will only encourage late night snacking. Politely say no to the overflowing Tupperware containers that are waiting for you when you leave. Slow down. It takes your body about twenty minutes to realize that you are full, and it’s easy to get carried away when you are in the company of friends and family. Push yourself away from the table and take a minute to be conscious of what and how much you are eating. Ask yourself, are you really hungry? Get back on schedule. Weight loss is very much like driving. If you take a wrong turn, just head back in the right direction. It’s never too late to turn things around!
In Conclusion:
Our sedentary lifestyles and lack of self-control are the real culprits for our holiday battle against weight gain. You won’t have to dread stepping on the scale when the holiday season comes to an end if you just take control and plan ahead! You can still enjoy the holidays with family, friends and the ones you love. Just make healthy food choices, eat in moderation, and stay active. Remember, it’s not about what you do once in a while it’s about what you do every day. It’s your day-to-day habits that will have the biggest impact on your weight loss efforts. Be safe, have fun and enjoy the season! Happy Holidays! Did you or someone you know become noticeably healthier, stronger, leaner, and more physically fit from a new commitment to exercise? Go to Champions Fitness-Center on Facebook, request us as a friend and share your personal success story! Inspire others to get in shape! We want to hear all about it.

Computers & the Web by Nancy Roberts
The Cloud, The Drive and Other Things Once upon a time there was a hard drive. It contained everything you had on your computer: your work, your music, your pictures. It wasn’t very big, but it sure seemed like it at the time. You were warned, of course, to back this up!. But, because you didn’t, whole small businesses were formed recovering data from hard drives that had crashed. Yes, crashed, as in, hit the wall, died, and gave up the data. Well, obviously, not entirely, as smart people could often recover some or all of the data if the drive wasn’t too horribly dead. It was sometimes possible to take a hard drive out and chill it for a while (literally, in the freezer) and it might give you just enough time to save the data, though certainly not the programs you had purchased and installed. Or, you (or your friendly neighborhood data recovery company) might run some software on the drive that would recover this data and save it to another drive. But in the really bad old days, neither of these operations were things you could do on your own as we lacked the technical requirements to perform these operations - or the means to move the data from one hard drive to another. We usually resorted to storing important data on floppy disks; those little squares of plastic that were inserted into a disk drive and onto which data could be written. It took a while, but it was certainly worth the effort, knowing that your information was stored somewhere other than your vulnerable computer. And if you were truly wise, you’d make a couple of copies of this data - because floppy drives themselves were prone to breaking, getting lost, getting erased, and other tragedies. Along came Zip disks and we felt we had our storage problems licked. So much more storage! Such a relatively fast interface! Nah. Soon we could write much more data to a CD, much more quickly, and make multiple copies. Carry them from computer to computer because a separate zip drive wasn’t required to read or write the data. Then thumb drives - very convenient, but expensive. Now they’re not. Once they were a few hundred K. Now they are gigabytes. Better still? External hard drives that fit in the palm of your hand and are terabytes of storage for under $100. They run off USB ports, and don’t required separate power so they are very portable. But the real secret to storage is The Cloud. Someday this technology, too, may be pre-empted by something newer, better, faster and bigger - and of course, the cost,
originally “free” has been inching up as we become more reliant upon it - but for now it’s hard to see what that might be. The Cloud is really just a word that derived from the way programmers would illustrate storage when drawing an idea for a program or system - they would literally draw a thing that looked like a cloud to show that here was all the data that would be used, or the source from which data would be drawn for use in various parts of a system. So when a name was needed for online data storage, The Cloud was the perfect choice. The Cloud is both everywhere, and nowhere. As far as you are concerned, your data is both here - on your computer for you to work with - and “there,” out “there” somewhere. But in truth, it’s housed as 1s and 0s, ons and offs, in a bunch of server farms (big, big installations of servers, or computers that store data and applications) with multiple redundancy (that is, there are many of these farms that house the same data so that if one of them died for some reason - an earth quake, or fire, or power outage - another would be able to provide the same data). It physically exists, as much as any computer data can be said to exist. The Cloud presents itself to you in many ways: Google Docs/ Drive is perhaps one of the earliest versions of The Cloud. For you, Google Docs/Drive is an application with storage. You get a Google Account, you sign on, and your documents, spreadsheets, and slides are available to work on, print, download to local storage, or share with others. You can create and work on documents on your local computer, and then upload them, downloading them as you work on them, or you can simply work on them within the Google Docs platform itself - it has a version of all the major Microsoft Office suite applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) that are completely compatible, so another user can pull the document down into the Office environment and they will display and behave for the most part just as they should. It should be noted that Google Docs was once an application that simply replicated the service performed by Office, and allowed you to store the documents online. Then Drive expanded that to include folders and storage of all kinds of documents, photos, videos - pretty much anything you’d normally store on your local drive. The two work in complete harmony, of course, and I tend to think of them as a single offering, though Drive is certainly useful without Docs, and vice versa. Dropbox is another popular form of this type of storage - you have a Dropbox folder on your computer, and whatever you put in it is automatically synched with the remote version of that
PAGE 41

data and shared with whomever you choose to share it with. Some devices, like cameras, will automatically pull images into a Dropbox account if you have set it up that way, so that every time you attach that camera, it will add any new photos to a specified Dropbox folder. However, Dropbox doesn’t offer the working environment, so you will be opening a given document in a local piece of software - say, Word - then when you save it, the new, updated version of the document will automatically be saved in the Dropbox folder and shared - in its updated version - with other users who have permission. A nice little reminder is displayed on your task bar when a Dropbox item has been newly updated. I also use Blogger (another Google application, now) as a form of online storage. Of course, it isn’t going to be useful for much other than writing and some photo storage as it is intended to be a blogging app. But you can access your writing anywhere (making it a form of Cloud) and store huge amounts of work without cost or risk. The point of it all is, you don’t have to have local storage at all; you can use The Cloud for sharing purposes only; or you can create a hybrid version of local and online storage. This last appeals to me most, for a few reasons. Let’s take a quick look at the advantages and disadvantages of locally stored versus cloud stored data. Accessibility: The Cloud is clearly the winner here - usually. You will have to have an internet connection to access the information. While that isn’t typically a problem, you might be traveling and unable to log on for some reason, or your Internet connection can go down. Whatever the cause, no access means no data. I recall a storm one year that took power out for about ten days. Ten days! I was able to recharge my laptop by driving my car on errands and charging it off the car’s battery, so I was able to continue working in a limited fashion. But Internet was out for quite a while, so had I relied entirely on The Cloud for data, I would have had to find a place where power and Internet - were available. On the other hand, dragging an external hard drive (and in my case, as I have seven of them!) knowing which one or more to take with you can be a pain in the neck. So having important documents available anywhere can be a distinct advantage. Shareability: Again, The Cloud has this one hands down. Sending a document via email, or worse, handing off a thumb drive or disk to share data can be really trouble-

some, because of the time lost, but also, in terms of version control. Unless you and your team are all really good at naming things properly, and versions aren’t crossing in the mail, you can get into trouble knowing which version is the latest and greatest. Google Docs has a nice little feature that alerts you when someone else is working on a document that you’re working on. Security: There’s no reason to believe The Cloud is any more or less secure than your personal computer, The Cloud is both everywhere, and nogiven the number of Trojan Horses where. As far as you are concerned, your and other malware we inadvertently data is both here - on your computer for download more frequently than we you to work with - and “there,” out “there” know. The significant difference for somewhere. me is the mother-lode of information that can be accessed from a cloud as opposed to a personal computer: passwords, account names and numbers, even proprietary or copyright material. However, you can be pretty sure that organizations like Google and Dropbox are taking every possible step to assure security of data probably much more than you’d be capable of, or have the time for, at home. Cost: At first, Google Docs were free with your account. Later, Google Drive came online, and remained free. The same was true for Dropbox. However, as people became used to the ease and convenience of document access and sharing, both services began to offer more storage for a minimal cost. And while it truly is minimal, and while I’m certain Google, while not using your data in the particular, is certainly gleaning information in the aggregate and marketing that, will never become extortionately expensive, the more you use the service, particularly for large file storage, like photos and video, the more it will cost you to assure plenty of space at your command.

Vidiots by BRIAN MILLER
San Andreas When it comes to disaster movies, there are basically two schools of thought. There are those who are willing to check their brains at the door, and settle in for an entertaining, albeit intense, viewing experience. Others (such as my beautiful wife) find these films far more terrifying than any slasher flick. The reason behind this, is because in real-life, there isn’t a month that goes by where a natural disaster doesn’t wreak genuine havoc on unsuspecting civilians. SAN ANDREAS, which grossed over $155 million at the domestic box-office this summer, presents a bleak, seemingly realistic look at what would happen if earthquakes progressively began travelling along the infamous fault line. It is a movie that is tailormade for the blockbuster season, and the type of adventure that puts a Hollywood spin on an unimaginable tragedy. Raymond Gaines (Dwayne Johnson) is going through a pretty tough time. Not only is his daughter, Blake (Alexandra Daddario) getting ready to go away to college, but his soon-to-be ex-wife, Emma (Carla Gugino) is trying to finalize their divorce in order to move on with her incredibly wealthy boyfriend, Daniel (Ioan Gruffudd). Toss in the demanding nature of his job as a Los Angeles Fire Department Air Rescue pilot, and there is no denying that the dude has a pretty full plate. As is the case with most things in life, he loses an opportunity to spend time with his daughter due to his demanding work schedule. Ray was supposed to bring Blake to San Francisco, but because of an earthquake at the Hoover dam, he is forced to back out of this much-needed time with his daughter. Meanwhile, after the earthquake at the Dam, seismologist Lawrence Hayes (Paul

Giamatti) uses information he gathered prior to the disaster to finalize a program that allows his crew to predict when and where quakes are going to take place. To his horror, he realizes that the fiasco at the Dam was just the start of many devastating events to come. With a heavy and fearful heart, he comes to the devastating conclusion that “the big one” was coming, and no one along the fault was safe from is impending destruction. SAN ANDREAS is the type of over-the-top production that utilizes every disaster-film cliché in the book. From a litany of deliciously corny lines of dialogue, right down to the elderly-couple-looks-at-each-other-andhugs-because-they-are-about-to-die shot, all of the staples of cheesy action are here. The film treads the fine line between unintentionSan Andreas- C ally hilarious and unwatchable, but luckily, the charisma of Johnson and Giamatti, along with the spectacular effects, save the production. Like many movies of this kind, aspects such as characters, story lines, and dialogue are of secondary importance in SAN ANDREAS. While it is important to have big names to put on the marquee, and the audience has to be provided with some semblance of an evolving plot (the majority of the film centers around Ray trying to track down and save his daughter and wife) at the end of the day, the twisted steel, shattering glass, crumbling concrete, and massive tidal waves are the true stars of the show. And, for the most part, SAN ANDREAS delivers the goods. As they should be, the earthquake sequences in SAN ANDREAS are undeniably terrifying. The action looks as real as it possibly could, and the resulting carnage definitely earns some gasps from its audience. Obviously, Johnson and crew don’t

really want you to consider the actual body count that would result in a disaster of this magnitude, and hope that you’re willing to suspend disbelief and simply revel in the carnage. For me, it’s hard to divorce myself from the suffering that occurs when these events unfold in the real world, but for the duration of the running time, I’m at least willing to give it a shot. If you are capable of doing this, and are cool watching the state of California being reduced to rubble, at the very least, you’ll be adequately entertained.
This Month’s
An Idiot Abroad When it comes to travel shows, I’m sure there are plenty of people who believe that if you’ve seen one, you’ve seen ‘em all. This school of thought is understandable; no matter how enigmatic the host is, or however in-depth they immerse themselves into their experience, more often than not, you are watching a live-action travel brochure. From entertaining shows like GLOBE TREKKER and AROUND THE WORLD WITH MICHAEL PALIN, to reality competitions such as THE AMAZING RACE, you are provided with the opportunity to be introduced to some of the most beautiful, exotic, and isolated locals that the world has to offer. In most cases, you are seeing the best that An Idiot Abroad- A+ these places have to offer. Locales that, even if they aren’t popular tourist destinations, they easily could be. All of the aforementioned aspects aim to broaden horizons and introduce viewers to the vast, mysterious, and unknown beauty of our planet, but there is one program where the participant is far less enamored with the world around him than his counterparts. AN IDIOT ABROAD stars the cantankerous Karl Pilkington, and Englishman who, prior to this program, was best known as a producer for Ricky Gervais and Steve Merchant’s radio show. He is the type of guy who would rather sit at home with a cup of tea watching the tele, than, well, do just about anything else. Pilkington hates to travel, hates the idea of experiencing other cultures, hates discomfort, and hates just about everything in general. It is for these reasons that Gervais and Merchant thought it would be hilarious to send him around the world, and force him to immerse himself in the exact lifestyle that he loathes. The result is a show that provides more laughs than most scripted series’, while showing viewers some of the more unique places and cultures that the world has to offer. In the first season, Pilkington is sent to visit the Seven Wonders of the World. In season 2, he tackles experiences that are likely to be found on most people’s bucket list. In the third season, he and actor Warwick Davis (best known for WILLOW and the HARRY POTTER films) travel Marco Polo’s route to China. There are plenty of aspects that come together to create an absolute remarkable series, but at the heart of it, is Pilkington. Whether his deadpan mannerisms and foul attitude is genuine or are a clever comedic guise is never fully apparent, and admittedly, therein lies the charm. Rather than simply going to see the Great Wall of China or the Taj Mahal, Merchant and Gervais force him to endure a number of uncomfortable side excursions that include living with locals and eating their exotic cuisines. Pilkington reluctantly takes part in religious festivals, learns how to fight in a professional wrestling ring, and spends time with a tribe of cannibals. Denying Pilkington the creature comforts of staying in pristine hotels and lavish resorts, he is often sheltered in the most ramshackle of places imaginable, or takes up residency at a stranger’s home. Things like privacy and toilet paper are often nowhere to be found, and Karl’s befuddled suffering makes for a sadistically bewitching viewing experience. Though the show is a comedic riff on the typical travel show, the cultures, places, and people introduced by the program are pretty remarkable. While Karl is meant to see the Seven Wonders in season 1, the landmarks themselves are the least important factors of each episode. Through Karl’s annoyed anecdotes, the viewer is provided glimpses of lives that are entirely different than their own. There is nothing polished or pristine about Pilkington’s adventures. Whether he is eating tortillas made from wasp larvae, or helping an indigenous tribe build a hut, his actions demolished all conventional forms of travel narrative, and helped AN IDIOT ABROAD emerge as one of the most original and entertaining entries that the genre has ever seen.

Add broth and mix gently but thoroughly. (If using eggs, whisk with broth before adding to rest of ingredients.) Transfer to 2-quart shallow oven-proof baking dish; cover loosely with buttered sheet of foil, buttered side down. Bake 30 minutes; remove foil and bake 15 to 20 minutes more or until top is browned.
