Striving, Thriving, Surviving & Still Diving into Rock & Roll Purity is a good word. Purity is when you focus on a specific subject and explore it until you realize the many facets discovered within the totality of the one thing are it’s own endless universe.. Music is a good word. And likewise, unto itself, it is its own universe. After all . it has its own language, its own rules and freedoms. It has its own subculture. And in that subculture are the people who actually ‘live’ the music life. They live it. They breathe it. They dig it. They work it only because this is what they do. Enter Scott Sterling. A purist rock and roller. A guy who plays it, writes it, books it, records it, carries heavy things to it, cheers about it, organizes it.... who lives it. And he lives it right here in Syracuse. Perhaps you’ve caught him performing in one of the various blues rock soul groups around here. Maybe you saw him running the show at the Dinosaur. Maybe he was just being a fan at the same show as you on his time off. Who knows. Its a big universe living the music biz, but he’s like a ball bouncing through Scott Sterling is a purist rock and roller. A guy who all of it. plays it, writes it, books it, records it, carries heavy things to it, cheers about it, organizes it.... who lives it.

SS: In third grade at the end of school, each day, my friend Billy Forte and I would run to his house (in Ridgewood NJ)—his house was closer—and we would watch Dark Shadows (60s vampire soap opera), every day (our favorite show)! Billy had Beatles and Rolling Stones and Monkees records—so did I—and we loved them! He also had a Guitar! So, I figured I better get one too! CS: Right. That’s all a dude can do. Most of these bands were acts I got to work with a lot, live—and did business with them before recording them. The Lightkeepers has been a bit different in that they came to me before they had ever played out. But, all share great players within their styles and great songs. It makes being the producer a lot easier!! (lol)... CS: (lol) SS: ...The right pre-production is key. And, that can be from rehearsals to performances. Whatever whips the band and songs into shape - and then the right place & people to record with - if the atmosphere is wrong - the performances may suffer - and having a reasonable idea of what you want it to sound like - but also being open to trying or accepting things that just happen in the studio! Producing is more than just the songs - but making all the parts happen. The Turnip Stampede and The Lightkeepers albums took over 6 months to complete.

And, both were well worth the time spent! CS: You probably possess one of the more complete perspectives on the Syracuse music scene. Please hare the view from your post. SS: Like any place: where there are people there is music. Syracuse, for it’s size, has a great talent pool of many styles. Use Syracuse to your advantage. It’s a solid place to base yourself —and not too far from many major cities! No reason one could not make a stand right here! CS: Sowhaddya know?.... You also book bands into venues. What’s the best tip you can give to emerging artists on how to approach getting a gig. What do you look for in an artist? SS: How to get a gig: 1 ) Do not suck! 2) Do not be an overbearing knucklehead. Remember that there is always lots of competition out there. Not just you! 3 ) Have an easy way to sell yourself. If you are sending a demo or video and you feel it needs to come with an explanation, go make another demo and/or video . 4 ) Put your best foot forward. It’s better to wait and make the best product rather than short-change yourself. CS: I was there for you induction into the SAMMY Hall of Fame a couple of years ago. I drank 4 drinks during your speech, man. Ha ha. You obviously have a book’s worth of memories. Please share a highlight or two. SS: Managing Dracula Jones in the early 90s. Well, it could be a book. But, to help take a band from total raw start and accomplish all the things they did was an amazing journey—coming so close to the ever elusive record deal . It was a great time! We did everything the way we wanted and how we wanted, and it made for great music and shows! And, as a performer, I really loved playing in Rockin’ Bones, a cool original rock band. CS: Share a funny war story.... The night aliens popped out of your amp and stole your drummer’s beer..... SS: One night back in the Lost Horizon days we were finishing up a show and it was near to closing time - when in walks through the door - Jon Bon Jovi, his drummer Tico Torres, and 2 members of their opening act Skid Row: bassist Rachel Bolan and guitarist, Snake Sabo. Bon Jovi & crew had just flown from the end of their show in Rhode Island. It was Jon’s birthday and he rented a van at the airport and wanted to go to the club they had played twice before. The next day they were playing a sold-out carrier dome show—a small leap from the 250 folks who saw then at the Lost on the first tour! Jon’s then girlfriend (they would marry weeks later on that tour) was with him too! Owner, Greg locked the front door, opened WATCH ALL THE Italiano the bar. Ticco Torres took over our DJ booth and we had us a surprise party for Bon Jovi. Just another day at work! CS: In all seriousness, I believe my Gramma and Grampa actually catered “that” gig. Rock and roll. Anyway.... What does music mean to you? SS: Music has been everything to me all of my life. Music is life. And, I have some serious support to my all $2 WELL DRINKS music life—my fabulous girlfriend $2 DOMESTIC BEERS Miss Jeanine and my lovely daughter Jessica a Sterling. Without them I could $6 BURGERS not navigate all these musical waters. CS: Scott, thanks for taking the time to talk with us all here at Table HopARM WRESTLING ping. SS: Thanks, Chuck. TOURNAMENT

A Sample For All Seasons As the green leaves transform their colors every fall and each season brings with it changes, the same can be said for taste. How many of us have heard that porters and stouts taste better during the cold seasons, or light lagers and hefeweizens during warmer times? While it may sound logical, it isn’t necessarily true. I know plenty of people who eat ice cream all year long (not me). Speaking of ice cream, have you ever tried a porter chocolate flavor? I have, and it’s delicious. It’s probably the only flavor I can eat any time of the year. While there are recommended guidelines for the temperature a certain style of beer should be at for optimal taste, there are no rules when it comes to what you should be tasting and enjoying at any time of the year. Some beer drinkers stick to one beer all year long (e.g. my father-in-law); others like to change with the seasons (pumpkin and Octobercontinued on pg 12

In the infamous words of the House of Stark; winter is coming. Despite this unavoidable truth, there is still reason to be excited. Though you may have enjoyed many of the blockbusters that blasted their way through theaters during the dogdays of summer, there are a number of upcoming productions that are just as enticing, if not more, than their sunny-seasoned brethren. Here are just a few of the films I am looking forward to seeing the most in the ensuing months.

When Sony found itself as the centerpiece of one of the largest and most egregious hacking attacks ever unleashed upon an American corporation, a multitude of secrets were spilled. While there was plenty of embarrassment and concern to go around, the latest James Bond film, SPECTRE found itself in the thick of the scandal. While there are undoubtedly a number of productions that find themselves in various forms of peril, more often than not, these concerns are kept close to the cuff. Unfortunately for Sony, all of the worrisome proclamations surrounding SPECTRE were consumed by the masses. Not only was an early, lackluster, and spoiler-centric draft of the script released, but there was already internal concern that the budget of the film had already exceeded $300 million. This was before shooting had even wrapped. Despite these concerns, there is still plenty of reason to be excited by the latest 007 installment. While there are still those who prefer their Bond a little more lighthearted and quippy, I, for one, have been really impressed and entertained by the trio of films starring Daniel Craig. His turns have resulted in three of the best films that the franchise has seen. Less McGuyver and more Bourne, the intensity projected in CASINO ROYALE, QUANTUM OF SOLACE, and SKYFALL have revitalized the series that seemed to be fading fast. With speculation that this will be the last time that Craig will fire up the Aston Martin, combined with the fact that Sam Mendes (who directed the thrilling SKYFALL) is back for his second stab at Bond, I find it hard to believe that the film will be the disaster that many expect it to be. SPECTRE- NOVEMBER 6 A special thanks goes to Regal Cinemas at Destiny USA for allowing me to attend this winter’s biggest films.

production of BIRDMAN with an easier project. BIRDMAN was a complex, entertaining, and original film that played out as if it were one long, unbroken shot. It was daring and inventive, and done on a scale that had never been seen. Rather than simply heading to a studio and churning out a simple studio film, his next feature continued on pg 14

On December 18th original STAR WARS cast members Harrison Ford, Mark Hammil, Carrie Fisher and others return to thier iconic roles in THE FORCE AWAKENS.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

When it was announced that George Lucas had relinquished the rights to the STAR WARS franchise, and sold it for roughly a kajillion bucks to Walt Disney Studios, there were certainly some die-hard Force fans who bristled with contempt. Would the Mickey Mouse-driven juggernaut Disney-ize the beloved STAR WARS franchise? Would their productions sully the series that means so much to so many? With the announcement that J.J. Abrams was to helm the first film entitled THE FORCE AWAKENS, and that original STAR WARS cast members Harrison Ford, Mark Hammil, and Carrie Fisher were to set to reprise their iconic roles, it was virtually impossible not to grow giddy at the possibilities. Abrams, who resurrected the STAR TREK franchise with (arguably) two of the best films in the entire cannon, has kept many plot details and characters close to the vest. By releasing snippets of information through social media in the form of cryptic messages and photos, interest in the project has been raging from the moment he jumped on board. From glimpses of the Millennium Falcon to a teaser trailer that almost broke the internet, he has consistently given fans reason to celebrate, one morsel at a time. In the end, when FORCE is released on December 18, it will garner constant comparisons to the original trilogy, but there is little doubt that it will be stacked up against Episodes 1-3 even more. As time has gone on, the vitriol tossed at PHANTOM MENACE, THE CLONE Over 40 Years in the Same Locatio WARS, and RISE OF THE SITH has been n! Celebrating unrelenting. Despite the fact that they were all colossal hits, time has not been kind to the modern trilogy. It seems as if only a select few look back lovingly on the films, and more often than not, it receives punchlines rather than praise. With the promise of a cavalcade of spin-offs and sequels poised to take flight over the course of the next decade, Abrams’ film will serve as a catalyst for everything else that is to come. I, for one, am ready to nerd-out just as much as anybody, and midDecember can’t come soon enough. Exciting, it is! STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS: December 18

fest beers dominate now as we will quickly move to winter recommendations); while others will try anything anytime and enjoy the pleasure of tasting in the name of variety and experimentation. Are these people bold? Not necessarily. Imagine going to a beer festival where your head spins from the number of breweries to the wide range of craft beers available all at once. Where to start, which to choose? Whenever I attend an event or tasting, it’s always recommended to start with the lighter hopped (lower IBU’s) beers and end with the hoppier ones (higher IBU’s). Some recommend starting light colored beers to the darkest, which can be tricky since a beer’s color is an indication of the malts used and not necessarily hoppy. When I used to provide tastings, I’d start with the lagers (including pilsners), then the amber ales, pale ales and then IPA’s. You also have other styles such as double/ imperial IPA’s, which should definitely be tasted last since the hoppiness will affect your taste buds. With other types of beers like lambics, sours, experimental blends and darker beers, tasting beer can really be like figuring out a jigsaw puzzle. When in doubt, always ask someone at these events, and they will guide you in the right direction. Beer stores and grocery chains regularly have free beer tastings so take advantage of their expertise. If you think porters and stouts are too heavy in the summer time, think again. Wynwood Brewing

anything – music, food, activities, and of course beer. In my younger days, I didn’t prefer cocktails but didn’t know what beer to choose. Craft beer wasn’t a ‘thing’ yet, so I mostly stuck with light lagers. I do remember enjoying one particular Belgian beer during those times. As time passed I sampled more and got a formal beer education. Since then, my tastes have dramatically changed. Perhaps in part it’s my taste buds changing on me, and in part just having a taste for something The next time you pick up a 12-pack, instead of getting 12 of one kind, try a sampler pack and in particular. Just a few play with your taste buds! years ago, sours were on my no-no list; now I can’t get enough of them. That one Belgian beer I liked in my 20s – I no longer enjoy. I don’t drink anything that says “Light” or “Lite” when that was my m.o. Our taste for beer can change from day to day, just like food. Today you’re in the mood for Italian food, tomorrow Mexican, the day after, who knows? Yesterday I was enjoying a nice Canadian pale ale, but today I think I’m in the mood for a local amber ale. Changing tastes can be like changing moods (or not – remember my father-in-law?). The rules to tasting beer are there are no hard and fast rules. Sure, there’s guidelines for how and in what order to taste craft beer, but that’s exactly what they are – guidelines. So the next time you pick up a 12-pack, instead of getting 12 of one kind, try a sampler pack and play with your taste buds! Cheers!

THE REVENANT looks to be even more ambitious. The film, inspired by true events, stars Leonardo DiCaprio (who will undoubtedly be in the Best Actor discussion this year) as a frontiersman in the 1820’s, who is attacked by a bear, and then abandoned by his travelling companion (Tom Hardy). Miraculously, he survives his attack, and then makes it his mission to seek revenge for the unexpected desertion. What seems like your typical survival action film is anything but. Iñárritu made the baffling decision to not only shoot the film in sequential order, but to do so using only natural lighting. Considering that much of the film takes place in the dismal winter, and therefor makes snow and grim skies a necessity, the task seems all but impossible to complete. For these reasons, the production has been veiled in specu-

HATEFUL EIGHT

When the script for Quentin Tarantino’s HATEFUL EIGHT was leaked in January of 2014, the writer/director announced that the film had been scrapped. Tarantino produced a live reading of the leaked manuscript shortly thereafter, and then had a sudden change of heart. Filming began earlier this year, and on Christmas Day, EIGHT will receive a limited release in 70 mm format. After this release, it will be seen on screens across the country in January. Director Quentin Tarantino’s new western As has been the case for his entire THE HATEFULL EIGHT opens with an career, if Tarantino is at the helm of a impressive ensemble cast on January 8th. production, it instantly becomes one of the most anticipated films of that particular year. To this point, he has failed to disappoint. By now you know that his movies are definitely not for everyone, with the fusion of over-the-top violence and humor revolting some and elating others. More often than not, his seemingly outlandish and gratuitous productions boast ingenious observations on human nature, and his snappy, quick-witted dialogue makes him one of the most elite screenwriters the medium of cinema has ever seen. HATEFUL EIGHT is a western set in post-Civil War Wyoming, and centers around a group who come together unexpectedly as they take refuge during a blizzard. In true Tarantino form, many of the members have plenty to hide, and chances are, not everyone is going to make it out alive. The ensemble cast is large an impressive, including the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Bruce Dern, Walton Goggins, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Michael Madson, Tim Roth, and Demian Bircher. If early screenings are any indication on how the reception for the final product will be, it appears that Tarantino has once again found a way to thrill his audiences, and may very well result in a few more statues for his mantelpiece. Dining Out by Nadine Vandewalker

317 at Montgomery Street Innovative, fresh, and simply delicious. These are the words that best describe a dining experience at 317. 317 is located in downtown Syracuse at 317 Montgomery Street. The restaurant, located on the street level in one of Syracuse’s historic buildings, is the perfect mixture of vintage elegance and modern simplicity. The antique ceiling and the exposed brick walls are perfectly complimented by the wooden chairs and white linens. The décor is spot on for a relaxing midday lunch with friends, colleagues, or clients or for a perfect night out with friends or an intimate date night. They are open for lunch Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 to 2:30. They serve dinner Tuesday through Thursday from 5 to 9 and on Fridays and Saturdays from 5 to 10. They are closed on Sunday and Monday. To make reservations call 317 at (315) 214-4267. What really sets 317 apart from others is the use of Executive Chief Rich Kinter’s use of fresh local ingredients. As a matter of fact, he actually hand selects the ingredients at the farmers market and from local farmers. He masterfully uses these local ingredients to create new and inventive flavor combinations that are

Be sure to pair your lunch with their mouthwateringly delicious Rosemary Fries. Although some diners were enjoying lunch at the charming tables on the sidewalk, we decided to dine inside. We were promptly seated at a cozy table next to the large window overlooking the sidewalk. We decided to start our meal with an order of 317 Kettle Chips (Purple Potatoes, Gorgonzola, Bacon & Chives and served with a side of Ranch) They were crispy and delicious! I decided to have a cup of the soup of the day, a tasty vegan

The Write Stuff by NANCY ROBERTS

Yeats’s Ghosts When I first read the poem, “The Second Coming,” in high school, I was captivated. It was the first time I had sat and pondered the words and meaning of a poem for hours; memorized it so that I could pull it out of memory at will; and felt that somehow the poet had found a way to combine words that was literally magical. If you’ve not read it, I’ll quote it here:

The Second Coming Turning and turning in the widening gyre

The falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity.

The Secret Life of W.B. Yeats by Brenda Maddox Published in 1999

Surely some revelation is at hand; Surely the Second Coming is at hand. The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert A shape with lion body and the head of a man, A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun, Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds. The darkness drops again; but now I know That twenty centuries of stony sleep Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle, And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

through the Butler family. He lived a bit more like the bards of old, at the largesse of those who admired him. And he evidently had two significant issues: he believed deeply in the occult, and he had a problem with sex. One might say, as has been written brilliantly by, I believe, Joseph Conrad, “funked women.” Perhaps that is too heavy-handed: he did not exactly hate women, but he did appear to fear them. He seems to have had a fascination with young girls, though there is no indication that he necessarily acted on it, and he had lengthy love affairs with women who were unobtainable (married) or inappropriate (too old or too young). His frustrated love for Maude Gonne (and no, the name is not invented!) is the stuff of much speculation and romantic fancy, and much of his poetry is supposed to reference her. It is certain that she fed into his Irish Nationalism and idealization of all things Irish - particularly its legends and mythic figures. His personal journals, according to Maddox, reveal his struggle with his own sexual urges, and even ambivalence toward these urges. But ultimately, it was up to him as the single surviving boy of

After reading this book, I’ll admit to a little disappointment in the actual man though he is fascinating - but I have also learned that even artists eat, drink, and well, you know. We have to allow for their humanity, even when their words or pictures are sublime. But Yeats, like Byron, is in a category of strange that is all by itself, or at least that is what the research of author, Brenda Maddox, seems to suggest. Yeats was an Irishman, and liked to think of himself as having some noble blood

Word on the Street by BILL MCCLELLAN

Huckabee, Davis and Fanaticism I have always done my best to pen words in keeping with “right” as best as the powers that be have gifted me with this ability. It is the birthright of each individual to walk tall and proud throughout our years. It is important to understand how to react to the unfairness that infects the condescending mind. This Kim Davis uproar clearly indicates that far too many of us believe wrong only for religious reasons. Most are so closed minded that they will be dearly offended by the next few paragraphs. Mike Huckabee leaves Jon Stewart speechless as defends his controversial remarks equating the Iran nuclear deal to the Holocaust. Stewart responded to Huckabee without uttering a single word in one of his final episodes of THE DAILY SHOW.

It is a grave matter that so many of us are so backwards that we cannot see. A book written during centuries of barbarity, in the Middle East, where religious conviction is still so inhuman and barbaric that it threatens the world order even today, is not a literal or infallible guide. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is a book of analogies and lessons. For the most part Christianity evolved away from living the literal translation of the writers. A few quotes: If you fell while working on Noah’s Ark you were struck with a bolt of lightning (Samuel 6:1-7)…Purchasing slaves and selling children was fine…Leviticus 25:44-46)...Life had to be wiped out Genesis 4:8. Jesus even got even with a Fig tree (Matthew 21:18-22). I am more inclined to look at the Bible as a book designed as a test to see how much barbarity you are willing to condone to save yourself. Throughout the Bible minor reasons are offered to kill or torture women and gays. First Born Children are slaughtered under the direction of God and entire cities, including the innocent and children are wiped out to punish those who displeased, usually in a sexual manner. I don’t think you are expected to worship this conduct. Blind adherence to evil may well backfire with St Peter. The Koran has much paralleling design. Yet they have not evolved adequately and millions of Koran followers are quite accepting of, or willing to maim, behead and torture as Christians once did. the family to have an heir. So he marries Georgie HydesLee, a clever and very young woman who appears to know exactly what she’s bought into, and how to manipulate her man. And this introduces what is the greatest part of Maddox’s book: Yeats’ fascination with, even thrall to, the occult. It appears that Yeats was involved in several metaphysical organizations, such as Madame Blavatsky’s Theosophical Society, as well as Eastern religions and spiritualism. In this, he was not alone during this period. This part of the state experienced a spiritualist surge, which survives to this day in Lilydale, New York - a spot where mediums gather and the curious visit to peer into the future. Medium is what Georgie purported to be, though it is Maddox’s theory that Georgie was using her “powers” in order to control a gullible Yeats. Through automatic script - another popular activity of the period, along with tea leaf and card reading - she channels a number of “guides,” among whom “Thomas” figures most prominently, but all of whom seem to give Yeats’ detailed instructions on how to treat his wife, where they should live, when and how to have sex (often, apparently), and when to leave her alone. There is much, much more in this richly detailed and very personal book - unlike many a biography, the writers interjects a great deal of interpretation and speculation, even wry commentary, as she examines her subject and his brilliance, antics, silliness and passions.

I still love Yeats’ poetry, though I do find, having read the book, that I have to deliberately put the goofy, gawky, petulant fellow that she has exposed out of my mind and concentrate on the shimmering imagery and unexpected word choices, and merely relish the music of it. So reader, beware. He’s only human.

Tales from the Vine by CASSANDRA HARRINGTON

Why Riesling?

The Finger Lakes Region collectively produces 220,000 cases of Riesling a year.

Ask anyone from outside of New York State about Finger Lakes wine and the first thing they will mention are the superb Rieslings (reez-lings). Ask anyone from the Finger Lakes Region why our Rieslings are superb and not many people know the answer. The reputation is rightfully-earned, considering the Finger Lakes Region collectively produces 220,000 cases of Riesling a year. Amber Zadrozny, recent tasting room and assistant vineyard manager of Six Mile Creek Vineyard in Ithaca, explained the Finger Lakes terrior, and why it has the perfect growing conditions for the Riesling grape. Terrior is defined as the complete natural environment in which a particular wine is produced, including factors such as

the soil, topography and climate. Beginning 10,000 years ago, as slow-moving glaciers made their way over land masses, they left behind shale deposits while carving what are known today as the Finger Lakes. It’s the shale beds that assist with drainage and give grapes their rich minerality and acidity. In addition, the elevation changes along the shorelines create steep hills great for planting grape vines that almost never need manual irrigation. Those slopes allow for long exposures to direct sunlight. Every grape varietal responds differently to certain climate conditions. Riesling, in particular, thrives in a cool climate. The insulation from the lakes formulates a microclimate with moderate temperatures, making winters slightly warmer and summers slightly cooler. Without the insulation from the lakes, temperature spikes and significant drops would jeopardize crop yield. This also extends the growing season a couple weeks further into the fall, allowing Riesling to reach the preferred acidity before harvest. Riesling is actually one of the latest grapes to be picked. According to Aaron Roisen, Head Winemaker of Hosmer Winery in Ovid, the warmer temperatures and the extended growing season give Riesling its notorious fruity flavor with notes of tropical peach and apricot. If harvested in early October, Riesling will be dryer. The longer it is left on the vine, the sweeter the grape will be. Those harvested in November are often used for sweeter wines and if left until January or February, will be used for ice wines, which are extremely sweet and often served with dessert. Most wine lovers, regardless of their knowledge in the subject, know that not all Rieslings taste the same. Even though the grapes come from the same terrior, the slightest variation can produce grapes

People tell me all too often how difficult it is to eat healthy. I just don’t agree. Maybe five or ten years ago it was, but nowadays if you want to eat healthy, it’s really not that hard! I realize change can be a challenge, but if you want to feel better and lose a few pounds there are plenty of healthy options out there to choose from! We know that most Americans have a weight problem because of a bad diet, and as a result a lot Feel better and lose a few pounds. There are plenty of of health issues. It seems healthy options out there to choose from! like everywhere we look we see someone who is struggling with their weight. Did you know that most people think they eat a lot better than they actually do? Are you as confused as I am? Clearly, we are not eating that well because obesity continues to be an epidemic and we are seeing a steady increase in heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and other health related disorders. Even those of us who admit to eating a bad diet, don’t really think it’s that bad. We compare what we eat to our friend or co-worker’s diet that is much worse than ours and convince ourselves that we’re doing pretty well. The reality is that most of us could stand to lose a few and with that, improve our diets immensely. So the question is how can you and your family learn to eat better? Here are a few ideas to help you out!

It’s All About Mind-set

We all know that any type of lifestyle change can be tough. Accept the fact that it’s going to be challenging and get on with it. What changes can you make to accomplish your goals? Start with small, easy changes and eventually these small changes will add up to big accomplishments. For example, if you’re trying to cut down on soda, and drink more water, substitute water once a day for soda. It may take a week or two to adjust, but before you know it, like anything else, it will become a habit.

Overcome the Obstacles

As parents, we often think that healthy food for our children can’t be “on-the-go”, but that’s not necessarily true. Keep bottled water and nonperishable snacks such as organic animal crackers, whole-grain pretzels, raisins and nuts on hand at all times. This way there will be no excuse to stop at a fast food restaurant, drink soda, juice, or sweet tea. You’ll keep everyone satisfied (yes, you too) until you’re able to get home and eat a healthy meal.

Plan Ahead

The decision to eat healthier must involve the whole family. That means that you, as a parent, have to commit to new eating habits as well. A recent study found that children whose parents weighed more and had a higher body mass index (BMI), weighed more and were more likely to have a higher BMI themselves.

Your family’s eating plan should be specific as to what you want to do, such as eat at home more often or have more vegetables with each meal. Decide ahead of time how you will keep track of your progress and make sure there is a reward (that makes it worthwhile) with each goal that is met.

Make It Interesting

Healthy eating doesn’t have to be boring! The trick is to make it fun, interesting and age appropriate. For the Little Tots: Involve them in the food planning, purchasing, and preparing process. Take them on a trip to the grocery store or farmers’ market. Get them involved in buying healthy foods and have them help you prepare them. Make sandwiches fun! Cut whole wheat bread into a star or heart before filling it with turkey and cheese. Teens: Focus on how healthier choices will make them feel and perform better both mentally and physically. Teenage years can be the toughest, so remind them how taking care of their body will make the changes in their life easier to manage.

Make a Shopping List

Never go to the store empty handed! Before you leave home, make a list and take a close look at it. Is there anything on there that you can change to a healthier option?

Eat From the Rainbow

If you are making a casserole or pasta dish, double the amount of veggies you throw in. This will fill you up with good nutrients and prevent your dishes from being so calorie dense. Choose vibrant colored veggies and fruit. The more color, the more antioxidants. Choose a dark green lettuce over iceberg and don’t be afraid to try something new!

Use Smaller Plates.

If the plate is smaller, you can number one, finish everything on there without feeling guilty and number two, avoid taking in too many calories.

Out of Sight, Out of Mind

Keep all sweet treats and junk food out of sight. If you don’t see it you won’t be tempted! Keep healthy food like a bowl of fresh fruit, sliced veggies, or a bag of unsalted nuts in the kitchen at all times. You will be amazed at how much this helps you cut down on the amount of junk food you eat! Food prep and quick easy meals is KEY to your success. Prep your food weekly and be diligent about making meals easily assessable. Here are a few ideas: • Hard boil a dozen eggs • Measure out and bag up protein shakes • Wash, cut and bag up produce • Scramble together eggs or egg beaters for an easy breakfast • Make homemade gluten-free granola, protein bars and smoothies • Chop up and put all your salad veggies in a bowl • Make up separate salads in Tupperware • Make a big pot of healthy home-made soup for easy lunches or dinners • Cook up a whole package of chicken, then portion and/or freeze as needed • Portion and bag unsalted nuts • Cook up 3-4 sweet potatoes • Make a big pot of quinoa to add to a salad, dinner side or breakfast • Fill up a gallon of water and add lemon • Make a pitcher of unsweetened green or black tea

Huckabee continued from pg 18

God is looking for compassion and understanding, right, and fairness. If Kim Davis or Mike Huckabee believes that denying happiness and equality because of sexual preference, will get them into heaven I think they are in for a rude awakening upon death. I do not see how you can live your life demeaning an entire class of people who simply are what they are, and expect to be accepted in a just heaven. I don’t think God is hung up on sex. Christian and Islamic barbarians here and in the Middle East were and are. The severe consequence to gays does not matter to Davis and Huckabee. They would with a fanatical sense of personal righteousness take us back to any conduct the Bible says is OK. They would form their hands in prayer as gays were stoned or women had their hands amputated for accidentally bumping into a man’ genitals. (Deuteronomy 25:11) The Bible is extremely hung up on women and all kinds of sex and brutal senseless death as punishment for minor simple offenses. Taking the innocent along the way in this punishment is just fine. You can safely trust the Bible is man-made. ISIS cutting off heads by the thousands because of extremism that we give voice to extremism that defies the rights of others to be treated as equals in America. A voice grounded in religious barbarity that is clear as day to anyone that actually reads scripture. A course void of human decency, fairness, understanding or compassion. Hardly the word of a just God. Since I was old enough to form intelligent thought I have believed with every ounce of my being in equality. Nearly all that fail this view become bully’s to their chosen victims. In the human experience, no one is better or worse than any other. In fact we are all fantastic. Racism, homophobia or prejudice in any form are manufactured suggestions by those that have not adapted well to fair and proper thinking. Who is to say your birth or life choice was “right” over any other? How clear can it be? Who does it hurt but the sensitivities of dispassionate fanatics? I am white and straight. Far too often in my life has a black or gay walked away from a group or conversation and someone would remark with foul and ugly comment. My disdain for their thinking and lack of compassion eludes their convicted thinking. There is no more disturbing weakness in the evolutionary process of man than the sincere disdain for another human being over matters that are as decent as your own. Those that revere the Bible unquestioningly would do well to consider that a just God is far more likely testing you. Few writings in human history are as abhorrent as Exodus 12-29-36: “At midnight the Lord struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sat on the throne, to the firstborn of the prisoner who was in the dungeon, and the firstborn of all the livestock as well. Pharaoh and all his officials and all the Egyptians got up during the night, and there was loud wailing in Egypt, for there was not a house without someone dead.” If that does not teach you the Bible is meant to be questioned nothing will. Kim Davis and Mike Huckabee believe in teaching that condemns homosexuality, embraces slavery, kills children, tortures women and takes revenge on animals. I am not far from my grave and I am putting my money that this evil eludes a just God. I would much prefer to meet my maker knowing I chose compassion, love and kindness and lived those choices to my fullest. You cannot be racist or homophobe or condone human barbarity and say that you lived in this fashion.

Jazzed About Jackets Put your crop tops away and pull out those beanies from the back of your closet – October is here! It’s time for carving pumpkins and going apple picking and with that comes cozy knits and combat boots. What I’m most excited for this season though, might just be what goes over your outfit. Fall jackets this year are to die for. Alexander Wang designed a beautiful black and red plaid wool coat that I would love to layer over all of my neutral pieces for an added edge. The Row took leather to the next level with a long trench-

TABLE HOPPING

like jacket in olive green. Victoria Beckham stuck with the classic pea coat and modernized it with an oversized fit. And of course, Phillip Lim created an absolutely genius look with a utilitarian green bomber jacket and a fluffy fur neckline. Sometimes the jacket makes the outfit. Most of my fall days are spent walking from place to place with my jacket on, only shedding it once I’m inside running errands or having meetings. Underneath you can typically count on me wearing jeans or leggings and a draped neutral top with black boots. I keep it simple, very European chic. But I love catching those eyes when I’m walking around, enjoying the fall weather. A stunning jacket is the ultimate outfit topper. When I’m looking for the perfect jacket, I typically check for three things – texture, fit, and fabric. I think texture can take a simple jacket from boring to beautiful. Fur, suede, leather or fringe will always add a little something extra to your look. As for fit, longer jackets are popular right now, usually something that hits just above the knee. Along with length, the body of the jacket should be loosely fitted, especially if you’re layering on top of bulky sweaters. The fabric is so important. We can get away with cheap leggings or t-shirts, but when it comes to jackets, it’s time to invest. A quality fabric won’t only make you look amazing, it will keep you warm. So layer yourself up and hit the streets in a gorgeous jacket that represents your style. You’re going to look amazing.

My Mind To Yours

by DEBRA MERRYWEATHER

Trusting Unaware In a 2011 deposition concerning sexual abuse of children, Roman Catholic Bishop Robert Cunningham suggests that childhood victims can be culpable. Roman Catholic children make their first confessions at age seven. After that, child-penitents regularly examine their consciences for new sins they committed since the last confession. A portion of Bishop Cunningham’s deposition published online states, “Anyone who confesses, confesses because they do feel something wrong has taken place in their life.” Well, not always. Children taught to both fear and revere religious authorities, finding themselves in the automatic role of guilty party might just confess the sins their teachers taught them to confess with little understanding of what they are saying. Bishop Cunningham wrote in September 2015, “the plain and simple fact is that depositions are difficult by their very nature.” Why yes they are. Roman Catholic children did not always make their first confession at age seven. According to “God’s Bankers” by Gerald Posner, until around 1910 Catholic children made their first confessions at age twelve. The late 1800s and early 1900s brought the rise of modernism, a term applied to intellectualism, the secular state, cinema, increased literacy and secular thought. Posner writes that Pope Pius X sought to stem the tide of modernism among Italian Catholics because Italy itself embraced modernity. By lowering the age of first confession to seven, the church could ferret out modern ideas much earlier in children while also questioning them

about which newspapers their parents read and what political movements the parents supported. “God’s Bankers” references “The Dark Box,” a book by John Cornwell that suggests that an unintended consequence of the lowered age of confession was that seven-year-old children reflexively confessing nebulous sins such as impure thoughts and deeds inadvertently and wrongly identified themselves as suffering from “sexual complexes” making them potential targets for sin-minded priests. The seal of the confessional can be a double- edged sword for impressionable religious children taught to keep secret any discussions between them and the priests whom the children are taught stand as mediators between God and humanity and as such, claim higher authorThe Missing Kennedy by Elizabeth ity over the children than their Koehler-Pentacoff will be released this parents. month, October 2015. Adults raised to defer to one authority often defer to others. Early Kennedy family histories describe Rosemary Kennedy, the third child of Joseph and Rose Kennedy as a slow learner. Later family histories suggest Rosemary was mentally ill, bi-polar, promiscuous, or simply disabled but most all conclude

that the lobotomy inflicted on her to fix her left her incapacitated. Lobotomy, a type of psychiatric surgery discredited long before its inflictions ceased, sought to cure emotional problems by disturbing the very neural connections needed for cognitive development. This seems similar to shamefully sexualizing a child to discourage sex. According to “The Missing Kennedy,” by Elizabeth Koehler-Pentacoff, Rosemary’s tragedy starts at birth where an attending nurse sought to keep Rosemary in her mother’s body until the obstetrician hired to attend the birth could arrive and thus earn his fee. Rose Kennedy went along with the nurse who went along with the doctor and in the months and years following, Rose and Joseph Kennedy noted that Rosemary could not keep up with her siblings. Rosemary looked fine, but she was not fine. After embarrassing her parents by tripping in front of British Royalty, Rosemary found herself sent to a boarding school where she angrily rebelled against the rules. Rosemary wanted a normal life. She wanted to date. Eventually, unbeknown to his wife and children, Joseph Kennedy had Rosemary lobotomized at age 23. The lobotomy left the beautiful, friendly and overly trusting woman physically and cognitively disabled in an era where the sorts of therapy that might have improved her brain function remained unknown or unavailable to people whose families did not know how to advocate for them. Joseph Kennedy sent Rosemary to a convent where nuns took care of her. Koehler-Pentacoff writes that the Kennedy family, including matriarch Rose Kennedy, believed Rosemary left home to teach school in the Midwest. Rose Kennedy and her children did not learn Rosemary’s fate until Joseph Kennedy suffered a stroke and eventually passed. The Kennedys did not question their patriarch. After Eunice Kennedy Shriver reconnected with her sister, Eunice helped her sister expand her life. Rosemary traveled, learned to speak more clearly, began to read street signs and billboards, and enjoyed the love of what family remained. Many Roman Catholics think of their church as their spiritual and cultural family – a family where for too long, no one questioned what happened to certain members of that family. Many internal family stories stayed hidden away. No more.

Computers & the Web by NANCY ROBERTS

Facebook, Facebook. What to do about Facebook? Personally, I’ve learned to “use with caution.” Certainly young people have left it behind, in droves. This started a long time ago, as kids realized that their parents were “friending” them, and then keeping track of all they were doing. I recently had a very odd and not a little unsettling experience: a photo of me at the beach - quite discreet, I might add - was commented on by someone who had not seen it when it first appeared a couple of years back. Suddenly, I was getting all sorts of response to it. It seems Facebook “likes” women in bathing suits. Embarrassing, but not more than that. Here’s the creepy part: several “Friend” requests popped up from fake men. I know they were fake because one, who posted photos of a yacht, a huge mansion, himself dining at exotic restaurants and who claimed to be the Director of the WHO, had almost no posts and had no friends but women with large amounts of cleavage and duck lips to recommend them. So evidently, part of Facebook’s algorithm allows trollers to search for people based on the type of photo they’ve posted. Warning: don’t go to the beach and have someone take a picture of you, however innocent that may be!

This brings me to another point to be made about Facebook: its algorithms. I wrote quite a while back that what you see on Facebook is only a slice of the whole - and Facebook has the lion’s share of deciding what slice you get. Yes, you can influence this by reacting to what you see - or not. You can block people, or set your privacy to exclude eavesdropping - not too long ago, someone tagged me in a post, asking me to react to a difficult subject. Someone else chimed in, Facebook has recently announced that it may be addhaving seen the post as a ing a “dislike” button to your options. result of my being tagged, and having set my privacy to allow friends to see tags. Sounds confusing? Yes, it is! But in fact, Facebook chooses which things that friends post you get to see in your news feed. You can certainly go to a friend’s page and see what they’re up to, but you won’t necessarily get to share in everything they’re saying or doing automatically, even if you mark them a “close” friend. Facebook has recently announced that it may be adding a “dislike” button to your options. People have whined for a while now that when someone puts up a sad or angergenerating or controversial message, they’d like to be able to “Dislike” it to chime in, rather than having to “Like” something they don’t. It makes sense, but the choice of “Like” continued on pg 36

was probably not the perfect idea to begin with. An “interesting” button? Or perhaps, “That Got My Attention?” At any rate, we are warned (This is from Socialmedia.com): “Mere days after Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed that Facebook will test a dislike button (more likely an empathy button), scammers have already pounced. HackRead shared the screenshots above and below, in which the dislike button is pitched as an “invite-only feature,” but accepting the invites brings nothing but trouble for Facebook users, as Farzan Hussain wrote: Once the links are successfully spread on your Facebook, the scam campaign will then ask you to fill out the intrusive surveys in an attempt to gather your personal information, as well as asking for your account credentials. All of those would then be used to spam you and your contacts via email. Some links may also install malware on your computer or spread the malware through your social media accounts. However, we aren’t sure if anyone has been infected with malware through the dislike button scam. Security expert Graham Cluley also chimed in on the issue: In some cases, they will even lead you to pricey premium-rate mobile phone subscriptions or online surveys that generate the scammers income, or trick you into downloading malicious code onto your PC. In other cases, scams like this have been used in the past to gain access to your Facebook profile and post messages under your name, helping the scammers spam out messages to others. Don’t be duped. If you’re a Facebook crack addict, then try to resist the urge of falling for the latest scam and wait for Facebook to properly roll out new features as and when it chooses. Don’t worry: When it happens (whatever *it* might be), I’m sure there will be plenty of members of the media writing about it.” So, wait, fellow Facebookers, before you sign up. If and when it’s real, you will eventually know. And most importantly, it will be feeding the Facebook engine of Big Data. Because, in the final analysis, that’s what it’s all about. This massive, self-declared, often un-edited revelation of self: interests, demographics, trends, purchases, life choices - it’s all there to be mined for God-knows-what ultimate purposes. Which brings me to my two concluding observations: Facebook makes me (often) negative; and Facebook wastes my time. When I launch my browser each morning (I work on my computer, so naturally, that’s how I start my day), it’s set to bring up the windows I use each day: email, Drive, Calendar, and, up until recently, Facebook. Recently, I found I too often headed down the Facebook slide into Hell. What’s that? That ride into checking your news feed; having to comment on a friend’s funny or interesting or even poignant post; then finding that political “meme” that made you want to scratch your eyes out: you know the ones, often featuring Sam Elliott with that knowing smirk (and utterly disrespecting the actor’s actual opinions) and calling one side of a political or social Civil War “a special kind of stupid.” And typically, if you bothered to look into it, having over-, under-, or utterly mis-stated the facts. Of course, in this world of complexity a “fact” is just a bit of evidence that may or may not lead to anything. It’s sort of like, “there are 90 billion trees in the world.” Ok, but depending on how you want to play that, it can be a good thing, a bad thing, or nothing at all. So, “Oh, my God! There are only 90 billion trees left! The sky is falling! (Insert name) did it!” Or, “Isn’t it wonderful that there are now 90 billion trees worldwide? Thank you, (insert name) for your wisdom and generosity!” And then, as the joke goes, the fight begins. All over the world, keyboards are clicking, “enter” buttons are being pushed more and more vehemently, time is being squandered, and nothing - absolutely nothing - is being achieved. So, I now launch my browser without Facebook. I’ve set my Gmail to “tabs,” so that social notices go into that bin, to be viewed or not viewed, when time permits. There have been actual studies into whether social media can affect your mood. It can, without a doubt. Yes, social media can be a great way to keep track of friends’ activities, successes, and fun. It can be a useful tool for learning where and when interesting and fun events are taking place, or new products or services are available and what people thing about them. My lesson from this observation: amp up the positive use of social media. Follow things and people that improve your mood and provide you with useful and uplifting information. Don’t worry, the news will give you all the negative you need!

CONGRATULATIONS TO

JAMES SMITH FOR WINNING

the medical profession can control are the meds and you know we love our pills ! We give out pills to help you sleep at night and then another pill to keep you awake during the day. One pill for your blood pressure and another to counteract the side effects..When you add in the supplements and the vitamins and aspirin..People find they are taking 10 pills a day or more. .We can’t control you but we can control the pills we give you. So, my mantra has been diet and exercise....exercise and diet...I read somewhere that to get the same benefit a person gets from statin drugs (the popular cholesterol lowering drugs like crestor, lipitor, zocor etc ) ...the radical alternative that has the same benefit as the statins.... eat more veggies ! Now I am talking about primary prevention here....If you have already had a heart attack, blocked arteries, stents, stroke, diabetes etc that’s secondary prevention and the statins are very important for those people. The debate has raged however as to how important it is for the average Joe to take a statin. Some doctors think they are overprescribed while other doctors think practically everyone should be on a statin. The studies are reviewed all the time with different conclusions depending on who is doing the interpretation. The most recent recommendation regarding statin use involves using a risk calculation like http://cvdrisk.nhlbi.nih.gov/..If your 10 year risk is higher than 7.5% you should consider a statin. This number is calculated by putting in your sex, your age, your cholesterol number, smoking status , and blood pressure information. So, I try to plug in my numbers and when I punch the calculation button I get an error message. It seems my cholesterol level is so high that the computer assumes that I mistyped the number. My cholesterol is so high that when I tried to get life insurance years ago the agent said...don’t bother to even apply. My response at the time was to show them my recent cardiac cath results which did not show any FREE blockage. So even though my cholesterol was high...it was not sticking to my arteries. They didn’t care that I didn’t have blocked arteries ...they only cared about the number on the paper....So I went on meds...got my number to where they wanted it and got my insurance. Of course I stopped 20 the pills afterwards...I am not a pill guy 15 if I can help it. Fast forward to this month....From time to time I get chest symptoms. Could be anything..probably nothing but that’s not how I treat my patients.

If you worry about some symptom and some test can give us information why not get the test? At least twice a year I will push myself past the limits of my endurance physically...usually hiking and skiing with the Clan Haswell. I would rather not keel over in the near future because life is great right now. My wife still seems interested in me and my professional work has never been more satisfying with Signature MD so I would like to stick around long enough to at least see how Iran, Greece and China all play out. I told you that I took meds to get my cholesterol down...I didn’t stay on the meds...I don’t like meds and what I read says you can accomplish the same thing with the right diet and exercise program so that’s what I concentrate on. But am I being stupid not treating my high cholesterol ? Are my arteries slowly and silently clogging up? In my favor is the fact that I am not a smoker or a diabetic ..that makes whatever cholesterol you have stickier. Also, my family history is good...neither parent having had an mi or stroke. So , do you go with a good family history and lifestyle or go with the population based scientific calculation. Well, you don’t have to be abstract about it...you can just measure the amount of blockage and act accordingly . So, last month, I went to St Joseph’s Hospital and had a heart catheterization. They snake a wire from your wrist or groin to your heart and inject dye to check the arteries. Its an interesting sensation. Not pleasant but tolerable. Dr. Simon and his team were very professional ...not even giving me grief about my not wanting to take any sedating meds. I don’t like to alarm my wife and I figured if I skipped the sedating meds I could drive myself home. My wife is a working girl after all and no need to keep her from her job. Bottom line is that there were no real blockages . Maybe a little plaque here and there but no blockages that needed stents, balloon angioplasty etc. If that’s all the blockage I have after 57 years of genetically high cholesterol I am doing the right things !! Maybe the tequila has some role in keeping the arteries open but that’s another column altogether. . Until we know for sure I am going to credit the exercise and diet. I feel a little vindicated with my diet and exercise mantra. I also think having a persistently optimistic attitude is also important but that may be more for my head than my heart. There is data to suggest that being happy ..having a positive attitude ..is as important for your heart as it is for your head and I want to believe that as well. The deal I made with the heart doctor was that if there was any plaque at all ...any narrowing...I would go on the statins. I don’t like statins but a deals a deal. If they will only come up with a pill I could take Sundays only...that way I could be possibly compliant with doctors orders. Just because I think I am a good doctor doesn’t make me necessarily a good patient. ! So, just like I preach and practice ..if you worry about a possible problem and there is a test for it...why not find out for sure. You know I don’t like surprises or guessing. When it comes to your health you shouldn’t either. Never be afraid to be proactive with your health...It’s not wrong to say to your doctor...” This is my symptom..this is what I read about it...this test seems to provide clarity...is there a reason I should not get the test?” Until next month... Get well... Stay well.

Vidiots by BRIAN MILLER

Love & Mercy When dealing with an individual who is as fascinating as Brian Wilson, it takes a certain level of ingenuity to do justice to his troubling tale. As one of the founding members of the Beach Boys, the auteur looked to bend the rules of conventional music-making. Rather than simply churning out the surfer-sound hits that catapulted the band to stardom in the early 1960’s, he yearned to evolve as an artist. It was his hope to create the greatest album of all time, and shatter the very foundations that early rock ‘n roll was built upon. Unfortunately for Wilson, his ideas were too ambitious for some, including members of his own band. While teetering on the precipice of greatness, his escalating drug use and deteriorating mental state lead him on a path of staggering self-destruction. LOVE & MERCY is a surprisingly invigorating journey into the heart and mind of Wilson, and results in the best music-based biopic that has been released in years. As 1960’s Brian Wilson, Paul Dano delivers a performance that is tortured, haunting, and unforgettable. There is little doubt that he will find himself attending virtually every award season ceremony, and for very good reason. Befuddled by his mental collapse, yet resolute in his desire to create a work of art, he is a damaged soul that could never find the help he truly needed. In a time when mental illness and substance abuse went largely ignored, he still found a way to orchestrate “Pet Sounds”, an album that is still looked upon as one of the most influential and groundbreaking works of the early rock era.

LOVE & MERCY is a surprisingly invigorating journey into the heart and mind of Wilson, and results in the best music-based biopic that has been released in years.

Expertly directed by Bill Pohlad LOVE & MERCY flashes between Wilson’s life in the 60’s, and his broken-down existence in the 80’s. In an unaccustomed and intriguing move, 1980’s Wilson is portrayed by John Cusack. With no attempt made to make the two actors resemble one another in any way whatsoever, the film presents two different interpretations of the same man, with multiple decades and heartaches bridging the gap between them. Cusack, as the depleted, teetering Wilson, delivers his most nuanced performance since 2007’s GRACE IS GONE. Grossly mistreated by his Dr. Eugene Landy, he dangles on the edge of insanity by the thinnest of margins. As Landy, Giamatti provides another blistering turn. For those that were entertained by his work in STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON, you ain’t seen nothing yet. Fueled by a fiery and combative drive, he isolates Wilson from virtually everyone, including car salesperson and potential love interest Melinda Ledbetter (Elizabeth Banks). Insisting that his unconventional and borderline violent methods are in his patient’s best interest, he does everything he can to keep the frail legend under his thumb. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Ledbetter witnesses many of these questionable techniques firsthand, and faces an uphill battle in freeing Wilson from his legal guardian. As Melinda, Banks is strong, impassioned, and resolute in her desire to right a wrong that everyone else seems keen to ignore. Like most biopics, those with an affinity for the melodic sounds of the Beach Boys will be far more invested than those who are not. At the same time, the film isn’t so much about the music, as it is about one of the men behind it. As a character study, the LOVE & MERCY is fascinatingly original. As a film as a whole, it is easily one of the best LOVE AND MERCY- A that 2015 will have to offer.

UNFRIENDED As many of you already know, I am a huge fan of the horror genre. When done properly, there are feelings conjured by a frightening flick that are impossible to find anywhere else. On the opposite side of the coin, these types of movies can be often be ugly and pointless. The key is the find the right blend of story, scares, and originality. I always try to reserve making per-conceived judgments on a film based on the trailers, but at times, it is impossible to do so. This was definitely the case with UNFRIENDED. On the surface, it seemed little more than a cash grab, exploiting the popularINFRIENDED- C+ ity of social media, and sticking with the recent trend of “found footage” horror. To my surprise, and semi-delight, the teen-centric flick exceeded expectations. The entirety of UNFRIENDED takes place on a computer monitor. Dating couple Blair (Shelley Henning) and Mitch (Moses Jacob Storm) are talking on Skype when a few of their friends join in on the chat. Shortly thereafter, they realize that there is someone else on the call that they do not recognize. Figuring that it is some sort of mistake, they all disconnect from the call and decide to try again. When they are once again connected, the same mysterious person shows up. The account is registered to Laura Barns (Heather Sossaman) a friend of the group that had committed suicide one year prior. What begins as an annoyance soon begins to delve into something far more sinister. The individual claiming to be Laura begins to harrass the group, forcing them to take part in a series of games and revelations that threaten the entire faction. If they refuse to partake in the challenges issued by Laura, they become the subject of a horrifically violent end. Like many “found footage” horror films, this one utilizes a number of tools to scare and shock. Because the action takes place solely on a computer screen, there are things like lagging and pixelation that distort the view of the action. This, of course, feeds into the belief that what you don’t see is scarier than what you do, and allows the imagination of each viewer to convince themselves that they have seen something far more grotesque and terrifying than what has actually happened. UNFRIENDED certainly scores points for originality, even if the end result isn’t quite what it could have been. Resting comfortably at a concise 83 minutes, it is a real-time based production that keeps the viewer’s interest and offers a few chills along the way. Though it hardly breaks any new ground in terms of a storyline, the fact that the entirety of director Leo Gabriadze’s film takes place on Blair’s computer screen is a clever way to tell the tale. The decision certainly elevates a production that would have been wholly forgettable if it hadn’t been for this clever spin on convention.
