Sounds Of Syracuse

by CHUCK SCHIELE

Edgar Pagán A Candid Chat with One of Syracuse’s Iconic, Hardest-Working Musicians Didja ever see “Spinal Tap?” How it spoofs rockstars, sterotypically, as goofy-dolts in audacious garb. Well... think the exact opposite when you think of Edgar Pagán. I actually just met him this past Wednesday, by chance, while visiting Rebel Dave Frisina at the station (on some biz). Dave, Todd Hobin, Letizia, Rhys Brigida, Paul Davie, myself..... and Edgar, chilling in the lobby. Everyone’s chatting, catching up. Its times like these when busy musicians get to catch up with one another. Being kind of the new guy, I just kept quiet and let old pals catch up.... something I understand, very well. Anyway, after a bit, Edgar introduced himself. In about 5 minutes of listening to these people chat—especially Edgar, who was generous about his thoughts on the various topics that came up, including music—I came to surmise that Mr. Pagán is quite the astute individual and impressively so. While at the same time remaining humble... again while offering his outwardly positive and generous-of-spirit kind of energy. Its no wonder his “thing” is working. So asked him right on the spot. Told him, really...” Dude, you’re my next article.” I’m late turning it in and Jess the designer is gonna kill me.

Edgar Pagán with Grupo Pagán We all he laughed and said, “okay.” Good. This is the kind of story I want, and—with apologies to Jess—what I hold out for. As many of you know, Edgar plays in a lot of groups around here, but, you all know about that. So, let’s get to it and meet the man. CS: Hello Edgar. Thanks for doing the interview. EP: Hi Chuck. Thank you. CS: You have quite a musical history here. It seems like you have a gig every twenty minutes - and things are going well for you. How long have you been playing? How’d

you get started? EP: I’ve been out performing for over 30 years. I started like many musicians jamming with buddies in the basement and garages. I’m mostly self-taught. We were all being influenced and inspired by groups and artists of the times. Santana, Elvis, and The Beatles were big ones for me. Also, I recall my mom singing Latin tunes and showing me Latin rhythms on the table with spoons and forks. I remember my early band mates lying about my age and making me wear glasses and more ‘mature’ clothing to satisfy the club owners. CS: You have a number of projects going. Tell us about them. EP: Now that music is more of a career for me I’ve branched out a little and feel blessed to have connected with some talented and serious artists. Along with the full band version of Grupo Pagán I’ve been out performing with what I call Grupo “Lite” that varies in size depending on the venue and pay (smile). It’s a little more Latin Jazz influenced and provides a platform for it’s members to stretch out musically. Much of it is improvised. I’ve also been playing bass for vocalist/songwriter Mary Fahl (former Lead Singer for October Project). Last year we recorded a PBS special that’s been airing Nationally and a LIVE CD that just won Indie Award for Best Album 2014. CNY guitarist extraordinaire Mark Doyle is her Music Director. I’ve had the honor of playing bass for Mark’s Guitar Noir project

that performed on last year’s M&T Jazz Fest Main Stage to a very responsive crowd. Mark just released a LIVE CD of our OCC Jazz Legends Series Concert. In addition I periodically travel to perform with world renowned percussionist Emedin Rivera and his Tropical Turbulence project. Emedin has worked with Sting, Stevie Wonder, Willie Nelson, and Paquito d’rivera to name a few. It’s exciting and intimidating as I never know who may show up as part of his ensemble. It’s provided me the opportunity to connect with some very talented and inspiring artists. All of this has. They inspire not only as musician’s but also as people. Humble, caring, and giving. CS: Tell us about what influences you as a musician. EP: Musically I’ve always been drawn to the Latin and World Beat influenced music. Probably due to my culture and up bringing. As a bassist I was influenced early on by some of the funkier players such as Larry Graham and Louis Johnson. Later on I started listening to more Jazz influenced players like Jaco Pastorious, Victor Wooten, and Marcus Miller. Jimmy Haslip of The YellowJackets was a huge influence and continues to be. I am really touched by his musical phrasing and rhythmic grooves. But, I’m continued on pg 4

always listening and learn something from all musicians. I’m self taught. It helps me to always be open, listening and watching. It’s a life long work in progress. I’ll be out hearing a local or national artist and think okay that was cool, love what they just did. We all have our voice that makes us unique and special. CS: Tell us about your thoughts on the CNY music scene. EP: I can’t complain. The scene here has been very good to me and continues to keep me busy and connecting with new people and opportunities. Like any profession there can be drama and frustration. But, it’s up to you as to whether you want to get caught up in it. I believe you need to treat people the way you would like to be treated. Even during difficult times. I appreciate the support and opportunities to do something I love and to meet and work with some caring, humble, appreciative people that are willing to work hard to deliver some good music and vibe to music lovers. The listeners and fans are the focus. Without them music can be lonely. I believe music is a gift that needs to be shared. Sometimes artists can loose sight of that. CS: Wow. That’s probably the response I’ve ever heard to that question. If you’re a musician reading this, go back and read what Edgar said, again. Edgar I just met you, but hope I can jam withya sometime. Anyway, back to the business at hand: How do you characterize your music? EP: It’s a melting pot of influences. I love cross-over music. Artists like Sting, Michael Jackson, Rihanna, Santana, and many more have incorporated world rhythms into their music. This can bring people and cultures together. A powerful force and voice. Our music is definitely world influenced, focused on a positive message. CS: You’ve played a lot of shows...please share a few highlights of your music career? EP: Working with legendary producer and bassist Jimmy Haslip. He produced our CD ‘Save The World’ and has contributed to our new CD that is currently in the works. He has been a very inspiring and encouraging force. Also, sharing the stage with artists like Spyro Gyra, Xtreme, Ismael Miranda, Andy Montanez, Lou Gramm, B.B. King, Dave Valentin, Bernie Williams,... A common thing I noticed is that they all work very hard at their craft and are very humble and approachable. The last few years we had the opportunity to travel and perform in Brazil and Japan. An experience I will never forget. I was so touched by the people. They are just like us trying to make things good for themselves, their families, and communities. CS: Sounds impressively fun. Thats the good stuff, right there. Now for the juicy stuff. My favorite question: Funny war story, please? EP: There are a few. I’ll mention two to save time and space. When I was doing a show last May with Bernie Williams; I had just finished rehearsing some tunes and was practicing my bass when I hear this really great percussion groove going on in the background. I turn around to look - It WAS Bernie, with a big smile on his face, the legendary Yankees center fielder Bernie Williams. He says “Yeah man, digging it, let’s do this”. I knew he was a world class guitarist but man he can also hang on percussion. We were in studio shooting the breeze with legendary producer Jimmy Haslip talking bass when I mentioned that Prince is quite the bass player and asked if he’d ever worked with him. He said no

but that he had bowled with him! He proceeded to paint quite a picture of Prince’s entourage and the evening. So cool! It inspired a track on our CD called ‘Bowling with Prince’. CS: What advice would you have for new musicians? EP: Hard work pays off. If you are serious about it then you need to do the work. Practice, Practice, Practice. Learn all you can about music. It’s one thing to be ready and not get a call but worse to get the call and not be ready. Stay humble and get along with people. Appreciate them. Networking is a very important part of this profession. Take the good with the bad. They’ll be the great gigs but also appreciate the not so great gigs. They all help make us. Always be professional. You never know who’s watching. I can’t tell you how many times I been approached about an opportunity by someone that had seen the band out. I also hear stories of bands or artists not being hired because of something someone saw. People also listen with their eyes if you know what I mean. CS: Yeah... what people see... this is why I never sing with shorts on. What’s in store for Edgar’s musical summer? EP: We have in the books some nice festivals and outdoor performances. Always fun in the summer. I’m focusing on completing CD’s for both Grupo Pagán and Grupo Pagán “Lite” (GPL). The music has been recorded and we are in the process of the final phases. There is a good possibility of some international performances. Exciting that it’s in the works along with enjoying the CNY music opportunities this summer. CS: Where do we find out more about you and your groups? EP: Our website is www.grupoPagán.com and Facebook ID is ‘Grupo Pagán’. Thanks so much brother for this opportunity! Looking forward to catching folks out at the shows. CS: Alright man. That about does it. Thanks for doing this interview. EP: Thank you, Chuck. Peace. --Chuck Schiele is an award-winning musician, record producer, editorialist, activist and plays in the SaltCityChill.com. Though Mad Max may be the name on the title card, Charlize Theron makes Imperator Furiosa an unforgettable female protagonist. Driving a deadly tanker at breakneck speeds, she is fueled by the unwavering need to provide protection to a small group of enslaved women. With a mechanical arm, and a fearless abandon, she is every bit as strong and merciless as her male counterparts. Theron, who is often underrated in her versatility (think of her turns in MONSTER, YOUNG ADULT, and ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT) may very well have given the most essential performance in the entire film. It was important that the viewer believe that Furiosa was every bit as intense and savage as those who are pursuing her. There was no doubt that this is exactly what Theron accomplished. Rather than being the meek, submissive tag-along that you see so often in films of this nature, she sets the bar to astronomical new heights for the heroines to come. MAD MAX: FURY ROAD is easily one of the best pure-action films we have seen in years. There was never a sense of “Been there, done that”, and every sequence was phenomenal. The action felt inventive and original, which is a very difficult feat given the state and budgets of action flicks today. I had the pleasure of seeing the film in the RPX 3D format at Destiny USA, and I will say, it felt more like an experience than a simple day at the movies. It is not often that I feel that 3D enhances the experience, but there is no denying that Miller utilized the effects to their fullest potential. The effects, as well as the incredible use of music and sound throughout made the already astounding production feel like an even more immersive experience. “Edge-of-your-seat” is one of the MAD MAX: most commonly overused cliches in all of movies, but when FURY ROAD you’re in a theater and you realize you’re actually about to RATED: R fall off of your chair, it’s impossible to not acknowledge this RUN TIME: 120 mins. fact. Americans request beer in a chilled glass as much as chain restaurants have them available. What some beer drinkers fail to realize is that beer isn’t supposed to be served out of a frosted mug, nor should there be ice cubes floating in a pitcher. These methods, due to melting and condensation, water down the beer, thus diluting it. While beer is made with water, it isn’t meant to taste watered down. Brewers carefully craft their beers with a delicate blend of malted barley (or wheat, rice, sorghum, etc.), hops and spices so that you enjoy their flavors to the fullest. Dear Senator Gillibrand and Congressman Katko and readers: I have been writing different columns every year for 29 years making clear that money (esp. corporations) influence in decision making (quid pro quo) is the root of what negatively permeates every phase of American life. Please allow me to make my case: Central New York and New York State have two highly respected representatives in Congress. Democrats love Kirsten Gillibrand and Republicans love John Katko. (And I am asking you both. Please read this. Rarely in a lifetime is what you need to know presented in one small place. You will likely never again read anything so important that presents problem and solution.) Most areas around the country have a like-minded regard for their representation. So if the 535 are clearly revered by their constituency why does the single measure that degrades all that they are exist without resistance? Absent this integrity sucking issue, governing would be attractive to, and sought by, and practiced as “the best that we can be”. Both Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt aggressively sought to prevent large trusts and monopolies. They understood the greedy nature of business and they realized that unchecked growth would cause a power shift. Governing would weaken as moneyed influence, already a problem would saturate leadership, esp. the 535. The Roosevelt’s understood that as money to the top is the one true goal in the corporate world, the well-being of the people would gravely diminish. This has happened. I mention this often because until the right people listen well, and a movement is underway, there is little hope for most other things. Nearly all our difficulties and their multi-faceted course flaws are a result of this. Simply because when you remove opportunity for us to be the best that we can be, the alternative takes root.

It is a simple matter. Clear as a bright blue sky. There is no doubt. This problem has caused American leadership, per corporate decision, to spiral in pursuit of 3rd world standards so a few can wallow in fortune literally burying fair measure. Destroying environments and enslaving populations in other lands was just fine. Forcing the degradation of American successes and values that emphasized quality of life and the pursuit of happiness for all that took centuries and world wars to reach was just fine. The most successful destroyer of American Ideals, the pursuit of money without rules, at virtually any cost to anyone was in place. The pursuit of third world standards has become American culture as the masses are reduced to the wages of lands previously exploited by our corporations. The 1% became too powerful to rule against. Today this is the elephant in the room among the 535. Yet its’ removal has not one meaningful Champion. In the meantime the Cayman Islands are in danger of sinking under the weight of the banks that hide our taxes so the 1% can keep them. As our infrastructure crumbles weakening all that we are even further. The 535, a media designed around ratings and money, and the business world are all complicit in this Country Club of moneyed favor. I try to key into bottom line answers. What I had not keyed into is the bottom line reason why so many clearly disastrous problems have gravely scant meaningful resistance. Then…the encompassing meaning of the old adage “All it takes for evil to prevail is for good people to do nothing” finally struck me. The enormity of this existing dormancy among the good finally hit home. Problems and evil will always be. We place blame and focus on evil when it is the good that are to blame. You will never conquer evil people. They are here to stay. The degree to which we suffer their wrath is determined by good people. Our target must always be the “negligence” of good people. Consequence incurred as a result of their doing nothing is their fault. If you don’t want bad things you do not turn to bad people for the remedy. The reason for this problem is simple. The beneficiaries of this repugnant purchase of American well-being are the mighty. The mighty demand acquiescence. Or they go after your job. The 535 live in a culture of fear. Fear induced by the elephant in room, and they ignore it. The 535 are supposed to be the good. So, the good that run our land, out of fear, fail to address this single policy cancer that has metastasized throughout the intent of our founding. Because they are scared right out of their integrity, no less than an economic and career ending gun being continued on pg 16

Summer’s Coming, Chill Out! continued from pg 8 and the server boasts that the beer I just ordered will come in a mug kept in a freezer, I always ask for a regular glass. Mind you, I’ve also had beer served to me in a glass that was clearly taken directly from the industrial dishwasher with automatic heating units to dry the glassware. I don’t want a hot beer either, and neither should you. Across the pond, as friends who have gone to the U.K. have told me, beer is served at a warmer temperature than the American taste buds are accustomed to. While it may seem warm, the correct serving temperature depends on the particular kind of beer served, much like wine. For instance, India Pale Ales, Bitters and Brown Ales are best served at warmer temperatures (54-57 F), compared to hefeweizens, lagers and pilsners, best served from 39-45 F. How cold is too cold? I don’t expect you to carry a thermometer with you when you drink, but if your beer is so cold it’s practically flavorless, my best guess is it’s probably below 39F. If you truly need something very cold for some instant relief, a water with lemon or iced tea most definitely does the trick. After you’ve cooled down enough, then order a beer. Let your mood guide you to what kind of beer you want to drink; then, quench your thirst and give your taste buds a treat to the wonderful craft. Beer is always a great and refreshing choice for a hot day, or any other day for that matter. Aaahh. []

Tilted Kilt continued from pg 9 the restaurant and the menu! Upon her suggestion we started our meal with the TK Irish Nachos- loaded with fresh-cooked crispy potato chips covered with their signature Guinness® Beer Cheese Sauce, seasoned ground beef and tomatoes. They were amazing! For a meal I just couldn’t make up my mind between a salad or wings, so I ordered both! I had the TK Boneless wings in Titled Sauce (medium heat), the perfect amount of heat, and a Pub Caesar Salad, made the classic way with fresh romaine, Caesar dressing, parmesan cheese and croutons. Cecelia decided on the Inferno Burger with grilled jalapeños, pepper jack cheese and their signature Kilt Burner Mayo and an order of delicious garlic fries. It was cooked to perfection and the garlic fries were to die for! BARRY 90% of colon cancer incidents occur in people aged 50 and over. That’s why most people started having a screening colonoscopy at age 50. The important thing is to find the cancer while it can be excised simply without needing chemo or radiation, etc. Currently the #1 way to do this is I received a lot of responses to my Bitch Bitch Bitch column from last month. with colonoscopy. So here you go Stan! of a flexible lighted periscope There’s a new player in town...cancer town that is. That player is a test called Colointo your rectum and looking guard. Another way of stating the same thing because of a misdiagnosis, or #3 the radiologist could and often does say he thinks is that one person in 20 will get colon cancer. Men get cancer more than women it could be a polyp and therefore you have to have a colonoscopy anyway. With but we don’t know why.The last year for which we have firm statistics is 2012 and virtual colonoscopy you still have to do a similar prep so virtual colonoscopy doesn’t work for me. There have been, up to now, a couple of other options including testing the stool for blood in the doctor’s office or in a take home preparation. I have given out well over 1000 of those packets and only got about 10 back, so that scenario has not played out well either. Testing for blood is not the same as testing for cancer. Now for the new guy in town, and that’s Cologuard. Don’t get me wrong … colonoscopy is still the “gold standard.” That’s the test I get. The Good are to Blame continued from pg 10 held to their heads. To avoid consequence all they have to do is look the other way and shut up. And there it is: “All it takes for evil to prevail is for good people to do nothing” And that is why they do nothing. We are a land of heroes and champions. If a young soldier can take a bullet so a politician can take a risk to fix our land, the politician should take the risk. The first step is to get people thinking about it. I am tying in America’s Black Community as under the veneer of Corporate and business appearance has always been the lack of desire to address this great employment need. That is historic. If we continue to fail to address our American Black community with integrity and fairness the intent of this land will never come to fruition. All else will be moot. Fairness and Justice are inseparable. Baltimore and the current inner city climate are much more the result of Government giving their power to Corporations than any other matter. The well off blame the people. What they fail to see is that never has corporate attitude even considered adequately providing jobs to Blacks. They historically have refused them the tools for them to build their own home and well-being. It is all about Jobs. I suggest to the well-off that they look within. See the unfairness and dispassion. Most inner city neighborhoods are made up of those, that recent ancestors of today’s well off held as slaves. It was not that long ago that millions were freed all at once from the grip of arrogant tyranny, with remnant attitude to this day, causing Corporations to deny them. Political correctness only applies to words not deeds. Those that provide work in this land do not feel an obligation to assist, train and employ those whose history is riddled with and includes recent decades of ongoing and encompassing unfairness. Until they admit this our downward course for all will not change. Prosit! Corporations need to stop running away from their patriotic and American obligation. They have weakened us at home in nearly every way. When you knock someone down and ruin every ounce of opportunity for justice in their entire ethnic arena, with no hope for their children’s lives, for centuries, it seems to me you have a remedial obligation. If you ever realize the extent of your wrong, you minimally should provide the tool “work” to give them the opportunity to build their homes and their lives. Slavery became illegal in 1865. Only for blacks to be held in contempt as lessor for another hundred years. The Civil Rights Act fixed discrimination at lunch counters, water fountains and bathrooms but did little where it matters most. Jobs. Since 1965 their government, corporations and job providers have deserted them. They have never had a fair break. They live in an American framework and culture of those with power that deny them work. street corner when that is all there is? Without work life is reduced to a place where there is nowhere to turn when you step off your front porch. Each child should have opportunity. Not just the rare few with rare talent than can overcome such immense odds. It is jobs folks. Jobs, jobs, jobs. Get them home. The answer is comparatively simple. Admit systemic failure. This removes individual blame. Develop a system where leaders are free to do what is right without ruining their own lives, i.e. remove reward for governing against public good. Then you are left with best that humans can be. Before you know it the intent of our founders will change from rhetoric back to deed. The best that we can be would not have allowed the very heart of our real greatness, “Our Work”, to be sent overseas with unimpeded ease. There is nothing American about destroying livelihood by exploiting the lands of other people, polluting their air, land and water. Until this, other lands were awed and respected our pursuit of human fairness. It is not big pharma, or big oil, or telecommunications, or lumber, or fishing, or big business on any level that is responsible for crumbling infrastructure, unfair wages, tax breaks, jobs overseas, pollution, price gouging, deforestation, massive chemical abuse and on and on. It is the good people, those in the masses and those to whom, we are their charge, that watch and do nothing. What a tragic and real analogy that those that utilize and support Campaign Finance are using the same tactic of the most evil throughout history. The tactic is to create culture of such intense fear that leaders completely avoid and ignore the reality that is running the land. It is not them. Saddam did it with bullets. Corporations do it with money. The 535 live and work in this environment where under a veneer of honor and patriotism lies their real world of money, and corruption and fear that has set us on a course of severe human injustice. Money permeates legislation from A to Z, leaving millions of rules in place that harm the masses that often, no one has even read except the corporate sponsor. And they get what they want. All Corporations are self-designed to bring as much to the top with the least amount of people being paid the least amount they can get away with. There are no employee concerns. Any exploitation anywhere is fine. The blanket corporate rule is to give those that work the least amount of money and benefit as possible and pursue with past vigor all efforts to remove them with technology.

So it is the good we must blame. When the good decide to break the bonds that keep them silent within the framework of their responsibilities, those that disrupt our land will quickly be on the road to obscurity. Here is what you need to take from this article. Do this and America is on her way back. The rest will fall into place. I believe in solutions. The finest minds in history know I am right. Campaign Finance influence must end. The people should assume the mantle of financing campaigns. America must finally learn to treat Blacks as full and equal partners in the American Experience. This means work. Otherwise, the American ideal and Constitutional intent will drown in the absence of ample human quality. In this little article I have showed you very clearly what needs to be done. Jobs, Jobs, Jobs. To get there you must remove influences that tarnish the best that we can be. To get there you must remove the power of the rich and Citizens United must be struck down. To get there you must agree to the people financing Campaigns. Then you will be left with the finest that humans can be and true American course will be re-set. Wrongs will be righted as best as can be achieved within the human experience. And that is where we should be. I hope it strikes you as it did me. The bad are here to stay. Go after the good with vigor. Their dormancy is allowing evil to prevail. The majority of the 535 are good people. The system is severely flawed. They must find a way to use their good. The best I can do from here is let you know one of the finest minds in history clearly agrees with me. Where in the world is everyone else? Here it is, so simply put by sheer brilliance: “The world will not be destroyed by those that do evil but by those who watch without doing anything.” Albert Einstein []

Hey B’Ville Vickie’s Back!

by NANCY ROBERTS

Sex, Drugs & Rock ‘n’ Roll The Evolution of an American Youth Culture By: Douglas Brode

This book is somewhere between a text book and popular non-fiction - it’s scholarly in its sheer weight of information, and fun to read in its reference to popular culture, and if you’re old enough to have lived through these eras, a grab-bag of fond (and not so fond) memories. Brode’s thesis is simple: the kids born in the earliest part of the post-war baby boom (say, in 1945 or 1946) grew up to become something that had never really mattered before: teenagers. And this, as the saying goes, changed everything. Where people who have noted this phenomenon before have always referenced music, and the power of not just radio, but high-wattage radio (radio that could broadcast in New York City and be picked up in the plains of the midwest, uniting the generation across miles, means, and milieus) Brode believes it all started at the movies. To be fair, he gives his first chapter to the genesis of the “big beat,” and the rockabilly roots of Rock ‘n’ Roll, which did define the entire generation - they definitely danced to a different drummer, and with small, individual radios (transitors) now available, they could listen without their parents interference (or guidance). This was the first major rift between parent and child, and a real establishment of a group that was no longer children, but not quite adult. At some point, Brode says, movie makers got the bright idea that they were missing the boat with a group of paying attendees. Those teenaged kids who were looking for a way to get apart from their parents, and carve out some space on their own. Movies made specifically for the kids were certain to bore the parents, and where movie-going had been a family entertainment in the past, now movies aimed at a teenaged audience not only tapped into an audience, but also modeled behavior and ideas in a group of impressionable kids who could easily be convinced they were “all that.” Brode spends quite a while on the “JD” movie, or “juvenile delinquent”“flick,” as he retrospectively calls them. The bad kids, the disturbed kids, the hidden homoerotic messaging in the films aimed at the confused kids - these replaced the Andy Hardys of yesteryear. There were many influences, and many privileges, that made the “teenager” possible: an economic boom that allowed young people to stay in school where in previous years they’d had to go to work - often leaving home to start their own homes and families while still in their teens; a notion of family life that included an extended period of time in the “nuclear” family (all puns intended); the growing conviction that education, first high school, est Voted B tore then college, ok S Used Bo cuse would be the in Syra making of the young person. What interests the writer, however, is how the popular culture of the teenager was formed - you might even say

Summer is finally here and now is the time to find the best summer hang out in all of Central New York. If you are looking for a great place to enjoy sun, sand, great music, hanging out with friends, good food and, of course, ice cold drinks, then look no further than Sharkey’s! Sharkey’s is conveniently located at 7240 Oswego Rd. in Liverpool. What really makes Sharkey’s unique is that it is a sports bar, a beach hang out, and even a banquet hall, all under one roof! The large and open layout of Sharkey’s allows for plenty of room for indoor activities like darts and ping pong and the outside boasts a patio bar, and the most beach volleyball courts in CNY. Sign ups for summer leagues for all skill levels is now open at thebeachatsharkeys.com. I met up with Jim and Kristin Nichols who were sitting on the patio at Sharkey’s on a beautiful spring day. Kristin was sipping on a Cruzan Rum Bucket and Jim was enjoying Sailor Jerry’s spiced rum. They were watching their teenage sons, Walker and Ben, playing

says proudly. Jim grew up on the beaches of Southern California, played 15 years on the AVP Pro beach volleyball tour, and met the love of his life, and wife, Kristin while playing at a beach tournament. So his best memories are of spending his days at the beach. This is the atmosphere that he has tried to bring to Sharkey’s. Jim told me that back in California people would automatically go to the beach after work or on the weekend to see what was going on and who was there, because that’s where everyone would hang out. Now, if you take that idea, and add in some ice cold Bud Light, you get Sharkey’s! Jim said that he loves to come to work because he gets to see all of his friends at Sharkey’s, and every day is like a party where everyone knows everyone. It is obvious that volleyball is Jim’s passion and a big part of what is happening at Sharkey’s, but they also have a ton of other great events throughout the summer!

If you love live music then you absolutely can’t miss the Summer Concert Series! Sharkey’s has had a Thursday Summer Concert Series since they opened in 2010. This year Sharkey’s has teamed up with Performance Harley Davidson to make Thursday nights the best ever.Lakes Jim told Finger Mall E me that a good customer and now good friend, Kevin Latz, told him that his good friend, Rich Milazzo, at PerforFree Admission mance Harley Davidson wanted to partner with Sharkey’s F for Bike Nights on Thursdays. Performance Harley Davidson has hosted their own Bike night in years past at their store, but Rich suggested joining forces with Sharkey’s to create a Bike Night for the ages! Everyone knows that Performance Harley Davidson means bikes in Syracuse so this was the perfect fit. Now, starting at 6 pm, every Thursday night this summer will be Performance Harley Davidson Bike night at Sharkey’s, featuring classic rock. Think it can’t get any better? Well think again! We all know that Summer is short in Syracuse and we love

being outdoors listening to music. So, although Sharkey’s can not make summer twice as long, they thought ,why not make the summer twice as good? So, Sharkey’s has added a second night of music and festivity on Wednesday nights. The brain child of Frank Yaizzo, the general manager of Sharkey’s and all around great guy, he came up with the idea for a Wednesday Concert series that would have music, Ice cold beer, and would also provide steamed little neck clams from Sharkey’s famous Grub Pub! Add in the help of Sam Adams and Wednesday nights has become “Bands, Cans and Clams with Sam.” It is the perfect mix of classic rock, country, 80’s, and horn bands. Sharkey’s, with the help of Kevin Latz, has found the best bands in Syracuse and they play for you at the awesome venue that is Sharkey’s, every week, rain or shine, starting at 6 pm! Did I mention that it’s free? For a list of bands playing both Wednesdays and Thursdays check out their website at sharkeysbarandgrill.com. There is one other event that you absolutely must know about happening at Sharkey’s this summer. Mark your calendar for Saturday August 15th for Victory for Vets. This year is the second annual Victory for Vets event raising money for an awesome local cause, Clear Path for Veterans. They will be featuring bands such as Frank & Burns, Chris Taylor, Dirtroad Ruckus, Pour White Trash, TJ Sacco and The Todd Hobin Band. Admission is $10 and all proceeds go to Clear Path for Veterans whose mission is to support local veterans. The gates open at 11am and it is sure to be a great day supporting a great cause. You can find additional information at victory4vets. com. If you aren’t already sold on Sharkey’s as your perfect summer hang out, don’t forget that Sharkey’s has the “Best Happy Hour in the Universe!” Monday through Friday you can get 2 for 1 drinks all Happy Hour long! Monday Pong starts at 9 pm, Tuesday night is trivia night starting at 7:30 pm, there are DJ’s playing all of your favorites to dance to starting at 10 pm on Friday and Saturday nights, and there is live music on Fridays all year long. For more information check out sharkeysbarandgrill.com or better yet, get up and head to Sharkey’s right now! []

Beauty & Fashion by ERIN REIMEL

Fashion Comebacks I’m constantly telling my mother that I wish she had kept all of her clothes from the 80s so that she could pass them down to me. When we go shopping together, I’m always picking things up to show her, saying, “This is cute!” Often the reply I get is, “That looks like something I used to wear.” Of course she got rid of everything that predated the 21st century long ago. C’mon mother, couldn’t you have shared the wealth a little with those trendy pieces from decades past? Everything in fashion today seems to just be recycled

“All of those throwback trends find their way back into our lives in one way or another.”

from years before I was even old enough to know what a trend was. And as these pieces come back Not Your Average Antique Store! into style every so often, it really makes you rethink cleaning your closet out. That fringed bag might be in again when your daughter is 23 years old. Or maybe that gingham jumpsuit will make a comeback in ten years. I was sifting through racks of clothes the other day on a quick shopping trip with my mother when I found the most comfortable looking heather grey romper. Rompers 315-682-1602 • TheHeckledHen.com are everywhere right now – you can just 107 Fairgrounds Dr. • Village of Manlius slip them on and you’re out the door. No sweat, super easy fashion. After I pulled it off the rack to show my mom, she just laughed. “That looks like my gym uniform from middle school,” she said. For the first time, I found myself longing to wear a gym uniform. I found the perfect acid wash denim jacket at another store a few days before. “I definitely owned that in college,” my mom said. Of course, it’s gone by now, donated or passed down to a friend. Now her closet looks a lot like mine – basic black and grey with plenty of shift dresses and leather. I wish that snakeskin mini skirt that not only made an appearance in Bowling For Soup’s song 1985, but also in my mother’s wardrobe in the same year, was still hanging in her closet for me to snatch up and show off. All of those throwback trends find their way back into our lives in one way or another. Whether it’s the choker necklace (Which I steer clear of. That trend should have never made a comeback.) or overalls, it’s likely what you’re wearing now is going to show up in your favorite stores again in a few years. For this reason, I try to invest in pieces that I know will stand the test of time, but of course my closet can’t hold everything. I guess I will just have to predict what will make an appearance soon enough and what will not when it comes to purging my wardrobe. In the end, what goes around comes back around. []

Think About It continued from pg 20 Under the CIA’s MK Ultra mind control project, some US citizens found themselves experimented upon with aversive, coercive brainwashing techniques in the interest of protecting us here from infiltrators from there, whom many suspected might already be here. The MK Ultra program ran from 1953 through the early 1970’s. During this general timeframe, doctors in the US performed forty thousand lobotomies, not to treat brain disease, but to control and limit thought – to brainwash. Our senses work with our minds for our protection and good. We need time to learn to accurately see through our own eyes. Attorney Judy Clarke described how Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s mother practiced a strict, gender rigid interpretation of Islam. Clarke suggests Mrs. Tsarnaev brainwashed Tamerlan, who in turn brainwashed Dzhokhar. Secular thinkers, agnostics and atheists might suggest Mrs. Tsarnaev was herself brainwashed in a world awash in religious indoctrination. I have read that the word atheist (a-theist) came about to describe the first Christians. The first Christians refused to acknowledge or worship the Roman pantheon of gods and goddesses. Christians not converted in Roman prisons died at Roman hands. Today, in the birthplace of Christianity, Islamic extremists often demand that Christians convert to Islam or leave their homes. Enough from me today about that portion of this big world. I live here, where many US Christians decry US atheists and where in the 1960’s, my early academic education came from Roman Catholic nuns who wore heavy black habits no matter the temperature. Many of them spoke sternly using terms such as honesty, modesty, self-denial, and humility, concepts that suggest different things to different people at different times, with nuanced meanings that malleable children cannot always discern*. *Discern: “1: to detect with the eyes; distinguish; 2: discriminate; 3: to come to know or recognize mentally; to see or understand the difference.” Our worlds are more than the sum of their parts. One size does not fit all. []

Exercise & Fitness by JENNIFER NASTASI GUZELAK

Start Your Summer off Right at The Swamp Rat Run If you’re a seasoned athlete or just getting started, finding the will to workout indoors when the sun is brightly shining outdoors can be a rather daunting challenge. From ballgames to backyard barbecues, the warm weather brings many activities that can lead to more eating and less exercise. Life is not a dress rehearsal, and for most of us, giving up a day of sunbathing at the beach or a sunny morning on the golf course to be cooped up inside our local health club, can be a real bummer. When the temperature starts to rise there’s plenty of outdoor activities we can chose from to keep us motivated, moving and in shape all summer long. Whether we like long walks on the beach, kayaking, a friendly game of softball, throwing the Frisbee for our dog, or a competitive volleyball tournament with three of our closest friends, there’s something for all of us to do. Over twenty years ago CNS track and cross country coach Richard Nastasi became the director of the Swamp Rat Run at Oneida Shores, Brewerton. What started out as just a few hundred people coming out to participate in the event quickly turned into over a thousand. Soon afterwards, everyone from local elementary schools to adults (from the beginner to the serious exercise enthusiast) were registering each year to be a part of the day. Fast forward to 2015 and we are now quickly approaching the 36th ANNUAL SWAMP RAT RUN. What exactly is the Swamp Rat Run? It’s a local event where the

competitive runner, someone just getting started, or a family looking for some good old fashioned active fun can run. The Swamp Rat Run at Oneida Shores on Saturday, June 20th has something for everyone! There is a boys and girls mile fun run, a 5k and a 10k. For several years Champions Fitness Center has had a booth set up right in the middle Coach Richard Nastasi of it all. This year, CrossFit Transformation and Kelly Lyn North Fitness (who has recently merged with Champions Fitness Center) will be there as well. Being at this event gives us the opportunity to meet and mingle with local residents of our community. We love to see all of these people having so much fun and getting their daily dose of exercise! As a personal trainer at Champions Fitness Center for over seventeen years, I have had the pleasure of meeting and working with many people in the Syracuse area. A local event such as the Swamp Rat Run is great because it allows me to see so many familiar faces all in one place! It’s so exciting to see families, couples, that person doing their first race and the hardcore athlete all running together under the same roof (so to speak) having a great time. There is always a huge turn out from the North Syracuse Central Schools with several hundred young runners (along with their parents) and volunteers from the district. The tradition of the North Syracuse School District elementary school to receive the district trophy for one year with the largest number of runners entered in the boys and girl’s mile fun run will continue. Spera’s (est. 1982) Meat-Deli-Groceries community involvement in this event does continued on pg 42

Sex, Drugs & Rock ‘n’ Roll continued from pg 21 “deliberately” formed by the influence of films and music, which either led or followed what was going on in the growth and social development of the teens. Whether the films reflected the social trends, or they modeled them for a generation nursed on movies, TV and radio, Brode does an incredible job of walking us through the various genres of (mostly) movies that seemed to follow the restless seeking of the Baby Boom generation - through the nuclear age monster movies, the surfer movies, the spy films, the evolution of the female persona in films, the “druggie” movie, even the “British invasion” as a genre. While none of this is new territory - I think if you lived through it you were well aware, even subliminally, of the ideas that were either being sold to you, or reflected back at you - Brode’s accomplishment is the sheer volume of documentation: he has encyclopedic knowledge of films you’ve most likely forgotten (and clearly, he not only know about them, but has seen them), or perhaps missed when they were out. Another accomplishment is his ability to link the films to one another, or to a larger social issue that in some films was not as evident as in others. When my daughter was young, and first interested in popular music, we’d listen to the radio as we traveled. A song would come on, and I’d ask her, “Who is that?” My contention was, if you’re going to like current Rock ‘n’ Roll, you’re going to know where it came from. That way you can appreciate it more. So we played our game, and she won - that is to say, she was able to identify obscure songs by bygone but popular at the time artists, simply by the sound or the nature of the lyrics. She understood, and could appreciate, the “sound” of an era. So I would recommend this book not just to Baby Boomers who will revel in the recollections (and get a deeper understanding) of their lives as referenced in film, but to young people who want to understand not just their elders, but their heritage. Popular culture, particularly as reflected in movies, TV, and music, doesn’t just appear out of nowhere. It evolves, taking cues and clues from what went before - even re-making the same old stuff but with the eyes - and ears - of a new generation. This book will certainly become a textbook for a course in the history of film, but I would suggest that anyone interested in the “why” of our lives take a dive into it. You’ll have many an “aha” moment, and most likely a daydream or two of your own growing up years, and what “that song,” or “that movie” meant to you. []

COBAIN: Montage Of Heck I was almost 10-years-old when Nirvana’s “Nevermind” was released, and I can vividly remember MTV debuting the music video for “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” It was unlike anything I had seen or heard before. I admit that I wasn’t the biggest fan of the band (nor am I now), although I did like a number of other grunge groups from that particular era. Though I didn’t love their style, I was appreciative of the fact that they created a niche that exploded into a full-blown genre. The fact that I didn’t love Nirvana is an important one, because it really enhances the accomplishment of Bret Morgen’s stunning documentary, COBAIN:MONTAGE OF HECK. The film, now airing on HBO and currently available through their streaming services, is powerhouse production that instantly ranks amongst the most extensive explorations of a musical mind that has ever been released. The filmmaker was given unparalleled access to Cobain’s entire body of work, which included drawings from when he was a child, notebooks and journals he kept throughout his entire life, and audio and video recordings that provide an intimate inside look into the mind and psyche of a troubled genius who felt at odds with the world. There was something particularly heart-breaking and haunting when you look at some of the earliest moments of Cobain’s life. Even at a young age, he had a talent for art. These early drawings are bright and full of life, with people and characters having smiles plastered across their faces. This was a time when he lived at home with his mother and father, and all seemed right with the world. As the marriage of his mother and father crumbled, however, darkness began to settle in to Kurt’s soul. His pictures continued on pg 40

(or at least those we are shown) become progressively darker, and the smiles that were so noticeable in his early pieces are replaced with frowns and fury. When Cobain’s parents finally parted ways, it took a tremendous toll on the impressionable youth. He began to rebel, which you can see in his journal entries and audio recordings. The boy found it hard to make friends at school, and began hanging out with people who were making horrible and damaging decisions. Kurt lashed out against those he loved. He yearned to be accepted and to have a steady home environment, and yet, even when he achieved these goals, he still rebelled and alienated himself to all of those around him. Bouncing from relative to relative, he never possessed the ability to plant his roots. The teenager began experimenting with drugs and alcohol and seriously contemplated suicide. As the story progresses, we are shown journal entries and scribblings that perfectly illustrated his raging insecurities. The viewer is shown animation sequences that show what it must have been like to live his life, and the narration over these sequences are from audio recordings of Cobain himself. For any parent, these are difficult moments to watch, because you can see that he was clearly on a path of destruction. Through it all, however, he had music. Kurt would constantly be writing songs and playing them on his guitar. He formed a band in his later teen years, and through great trial-and-error to get gigs and even find a name for the band (in one spectacular sequence we are shown the scribblings of virtually ever name they considered) eventually, Nirvana is born. Watching the progression of the band the band is remarkable. You see the earliest days when they are playing in someone’s basement, happy to have one or two people there to watch them. From there, they began playing in clubs and in front a steadily growing fan base. Watching the kinetic energy of the band in their initial days is eye-opening, particularly because the songs they play seem like little more than an unappealing mashing of noise. As they progress, the energy is still there, but the music finally starts to come together as well. Before they know it, they find a label for the first album, “Nevermind” and from there, their popularity exploded. For those outside of the rock-n-roll world, it seems like Nirvana had achieved everything they could ever have wanted. For the band, and particularly Cobain, this was simply not the case. They resented media coverage, and openly rebelled against convention. Cobain was labeled as “the voice of a generation” but this was never what he wanted to be. He yearned for nothing more than to create and play the best music possible. Soon, however, he discovered the one thing he loved even more than that; heroin. COBAIN:MONTAGE OF HECK not only utilizes the materials the musician and his family accumulated over his lifetime, but also features interviews with many of those closest to him. His mother, father, former girlfriend, and even his wife, Courtney Love all appear on camera. To their credit, they do not sugar-coat or diminish the demons that Cobain faced on a daily basis. Virtually all of them seemed to have a sense that he was a damaged individual who possessed a gift for creativity, yet could never achieve the level of happiness that came to others so easily. Whether you love or hate the artist and his music, any serious music fan owes it to themselves to check out this incredible documentary. To have such an intimate and personal exploration of one of the most influential minds in rock history is a rarity. It provides access to the life and mind of an individual that I knew virtually nothing about outside of the magazine interviews he reluctantly gave while he was alive, and the tabloid headlines that seemed to follow him wherever he went. This is not to say that these sequences are easy COBAIN: MONTAGE OF to watch. Morgen’s film is raw, emotional, and unsetHECK tling. It would have been detrimental and disingenuous RATED: TV-MA to shy away from Cobain’s demons and addictions, and RUN TIME: 145 mins. in MONTAGE OF HECK, they are on full display. Like many troubled legends before him, he was obviously on GENRE: Documentary, Biography, Music a path of destruction that inevitably ended in tragedy. Don Cobain, STARRING: This point is abundantly clear to anyone who takes the Jenny Cobain, Kim Cobain emotional journey with Cobain, and as a music fan, it’s a DIRECTOR: Brett Morgen ride that you can’t afford to miss. Computers & the Web by NANCY ROBERTS

More Smart Phone “Phun” Funny video was sent to me today - a child saying her name in slooow motion. It was very cute. Then - who’d have expected it except those of us who believe in the gods of serendipity? - someone mentioned an app called “Tempo” that - takes videos in slow motion! Well, I hunted for it, and couldn’t actually find that app, but I did find a host of others that allow users to take video clips and perform all kinds of magic on them right on your smart phone. For example, ClipSpeed allows you to make things up to 4x faster or slower. The only problem with this app is that it is hard to follow because it keeps trying to trick you into clicking on ads. Hey, you have to pay the programmers, right? Still, there are any number of others to choose from, like Speed Pro, for example, which also allows variable speed control of your video. Then, for a mere $1.99, you can play pro with an app called Videoshop - you can add music, create slow or fast motion, cut video together, and even add titles and SFX. Not bad for such a small investment, and all done with ease on your phone. Of course I’m not suggesting that these apps would take the place of an editing suite, but then, for a quick, on the fly, on the spot video to post at an event, while-its-happening, it’s hard to go wrong. As I’ve often noted before, all it takes is imagination! A couple of other can’t live without ‘em apps: Shazam and for FUN something called Zedge. Shazam isn’t new, but I find it indispensable. It’s a simple little app - you hear a song, on tv, the radio, wherever. You can’t think of the name, or you want to download it, or find out who the artist is. It’s driving you crazy! Simple solution: pull out your phone and click on Shazam - activate it (one tap) and it begins to listen. Literally (and I mean that in the real sense of the word!) within seconds you will have a response - typically, the song, the artist, and if it’s a TV show, you’ll even have a reference to the show and the episode as well. I have found lots of music to love this way, as well as saved my over-loaded brain from implode trying to remember “who sang that song? Who-who-who?” Zedge is just silly, but I guarantee you will spend at least an hour with it. It’s ostensibly a curation and purchase app for wallpapers (for phones), ring tones, and notification options. But you’ll probably spend the bulk of your time just listening to the silly, fun, creative, even real-darn-good ring tone options available. And you’ll probably download at least one or two to apply to friends and family when they call. There are a variety of genres, from spoken word to country to hip hop to old TV themes. When I first downloaded this, my family and I sat around just listening to them and laughing at, or loving, or remembering each tone as we played it, and shouting at one another to “give me the phone!” so we could each have a turn at picking the next “good one!” Happy apping. Strawberry Infused Vodka & Lemonade Cocktail Recipe by Nugmeg Nanny Directions:

Ingredients:

For strawberry vodka:

For strawberry vodka:

Fill strawberries to the top of jar and cover with vodka. Cover the jar and store in a cool dark place. Shake the jar once a day. After 3 days the vodka should be ready. The strawberries will look white in color and the vodka will be pink/red in color. You can strain your vodka and throw out the berries if desired. I usually just keep them in the jar and do not strain.

For drink:

In a cocktail glass add strawberry vodka, lemonade, frozen whole strawberries and lemon slices. Add a straw and enjoy!

1/2 pint strawberries, sliced Vodka For drink: 2 parts infused strawberry vodka 4 parts lemonade 3 frozen whole strawberries 2 lemon slices Yield: 1 pint vodka + 1 drink Prep Time: 3 days for the vodka + 5 minutes for the drink

Start Your Summer off Right at The Swamp Rat Run continued from pg 31 not go unrecognized! They are the main sponsor again this year. Mark Spera does a great job supplying subs for the 5k and 10k runners. Some of the other sponsors that will also be there on June 20th are Pepsi Beverages Company, Byrne Dairy, Lays, Fleet Feet Sports Syracuse, Onondaga County Parks, CNS, and the Syracuse Chargers Track Club. Timing is done by former CNS runner and Swamp Rat Run director Pat Leone Junior. The instant timing provided by Leone Timing adds to the success of the race by having results displayed immediately for each of the races. Lia Garnes takes amazing photos at all of the CNS track and cross country events and does a fantastic job capturing the day at the Swamp Rat Run! She also is in charge of the Swamp Rat Run Facebook page. There are so many Janina Cosentino with daughter Gabriella Cosentino volunteers that make this event such a huge success. The many parents, athletes, cross country and track coaches of the North Syracuse School District spend several months organizing and planning for this occasion. They must be commended for their hard work and dedication! Gary

Don’t waste too much time, register now online at http:// www.swampratrun.com/ This article is dedicated to my father coach Richard Nastasi who was an avid runner himself for years. He has dedicated most of his life to coaching the CNS track and cross country team. He’s also helped organize and direct many of the Swamp Rat Runs. As a little girl, I couldn’t go anywhere with him without him pointing out a jogger running on the side of the road and saying “All right, a runner!” Dad, may you always find pleasure in the sight and athletic ability of a runner. May your love and passion for this sport never end. Get your running shoes out, tie them up and get to the starting line! “I want to run until I can’t run.” - Bill Rodgers Did you or someone you know become noticeably healthier, stronger, leaner, and more physically fit from a new commitment to exercise?
